>i'm MAD interested in this wave of ignant rap taking over the
>industry. in the midst of a recession, no less.

They aren't related.

>is it fantasy rap? folks just wanna get their minds off their
>mortgage payment and pending unemployment?

No.

People like shock value.

Its why Kimbo Slice was popular. Its why people watch
Jersey Shore.

Human beings and wild shit is a moth/flame phenomenon.

50 Cent is actually a good rapper. Like Chris Rock said, him being
a good rapper had nothing to do with why he sold.

He sold records because he got shot 9 times, etc.

Young people, especially, are into that kind of thing.

The problem with hipsters is that they are NOT kids. They are
educated adults who INTELLECTUALIZE the dumb shit mostly
because it is GOOD FOR THEIR CARER.

You can literally build a career intellectualizing the appeal of Snookie.

Not only does Snookie have no talent, she's not even attractive. Her appeal
is acting like a dumb slut in Jersey Shore, and people appreciate watching
other human beings having the freedom to act like dumb sluts ( in part
because most of us don't have that kind of freedom....we envy the freedom
more than the acts themselves).

To Chief Keef and this type of rap:

His youtube videos were a Jersey Shore type of phenomenon,
where we couldn't believe what we were watching:.

a kid who had no respect for authority, waved guns
at police, yaps gang affiliations and laughs at death.

The minute I heard it I knew he'd be a star.

And I completely ignored his raps, as does everyone else.

Nobody cares if he can rap or not.

He points guns at police, lives with his grandmother, is
on house arrest and laughs at murder.

That's the appeal.

>i'm not smart enough to break this shit down - i got an
>engineering degree. we need a sociology PhD in here to
>dissect this shit.

By god, no. Social scientists have botched the study of
hip-hop bad enough. Please don't encourage them.

>but it's worth looking into. i'm trying my hardest not to
>just dismiss dude entirely.

Why not?

He sucks.

Just be confident in your opinion and admit it.

>i mean, "i don't like" does get
>stuck in your head. there's something to be said for making a
>memorable song. there's also something to be said for being
>able to capture the zeitgeist.

People don't like that song because of the song.

They like it because of the kid its coming from.

>i mean, this nigga is making blatantly homoerotic videos and
>songs that got like 12 words in them and parlayed that into a
>record deal.

And good for him.

Hopefully he can stay alive past his 20th birthday.
