162318, Fun w/ P: rewrite Prince's WB history "Time" Style aka The Art Of Short Classics
Posted by 15, Thu Nov-24-11 10:15 PM
the rules:

-any song he wrote or recorded can be used.
-you get 6 songs per album so arrange em so they can be impactful
-1978 to 1996

remember the challenge is to arrange each album so that its a 6 song classic.
boots can be used too.

i will post the year/albums and you follow suit

I think I'm Yours works better opening this side than closing it - So Blue does a much better job here, imo.

i've always thought that for you (the song)was an auspicious opening for prince, you've got to include the best songs soft and wet, carzy you and just as long and i'm your is a great closer that shows his stylistic range

I Feel For You
When We're Dancing Close And Slow
Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?

Side 2
Sexy Dancer
It's Gonna Be Lonely
I Wanna Be Your Lover (single version)

I may be cursed out for this, but... I prefer the single mix with fade after the last chorus over the album version. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is how I was introduced to him. I saw the video, had my mom give me money to buy the single, love where it fades. The album mix still drags on a bit for me, even though I've grown to like it more than I did back then. I would have loved it if he did a jazzy guitar solo over the groove where it fades in the single edit, rather than a keyboard solo. I'm sure some will go "no, that's the best part of the song" but that keyboard solo could have been a separate song, it just never fit for me within the context of "I Wanna Be Your Lover".

You know that solo he does in the extended version of "Hello", where it's sped up? Put that back to its original pitch and place that over that groove. Something like that would've worked.

First off, the first time I saw this was on public access in Honolulu, which was of course a year or so before I heard of MTV. I saw this, knew what Prince was like in "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad", and thought "whoa, what's up with him?"

2) This was also the first time I had heard of the word "Uptown". There is no Uptown in Honolulu, but I spent a lot of time downtown as a kid, so I remember looking in an encyclopedia wondering "what is an Uptown?"

3) I swore I saw this, but considering how many live videos looked like this back then, maybe my memory is failing me but: I thought I saw a woman in this video dancing with a "Hawaii 78", 79, or 80 T-shirt. Back then, that was the trend in Hawai'i, and while they were indeed football shirts, the numbers were meant to represent a year. I used to have a Hawaii 77, because 76 sounded too "American" to me (as in the bicentennial)

Anyway:

Side 1
Uptown
Gotta Broken Heart Again
When You Were Mine

Side 2
Head
Sister
Dirty Mind

My thought with this was for Side 1: nice. Side 2: dirty, at least with the titles.

This album is already short as it is and I don't think there's a need to cut anything but whatever, ''Do it all night'' is a bit standard if still dope and "€Sister"€ is too short to make much of an impact beyond the shocking lyrics which are cool but I'm a music guy s o this album is really simple to cut down IMO...

For side 1, I wanted it to end with him saying "stop". flip the record over, and you realize he's not ready to stop, so... "Let's Work". He's working, but he wants to "Jack U Off", which of course leads to "Sexuality". Maybe a bit off-balanced with one ballad, but I'll stick with this.

I played with this line-up, and I realize that not ending with "Purple Rain" may seem insane but I look at it like this. "Let's Go Crazy" is the ultimate party song, and he yells "take me away". At the end of the album, we now hear that his lady has been taken away.

Might not work but... I'll leave it at that. That would be about 20-22 minutes each side right? I'll leave it like this.

EDIT: As I'm going through albums, I realized a few things:
1) The American Music Awards performance of "Purple Rain" is incredible
2) The Grammy performance of "Baby I'm A Star" is incredible too, and I'd love to hear what happened when CBS faded out.

While I like the 12" mix of "Paisley Park", I'd love to see a different remix of it, maybe any rejected mixes, outtakes, or just something that is as extensive but not anything that has been released.

I had also considered putting in The Family's "Yes" in here, as I think it would compliment "Tamborine" very well but held back.

EDIT: Just realized that the full, 10 minute live performance of "America" would work incredibly too. I'm not sure how much from that Paris (it was in Paris right, since he was shooting UNDER THE CHERRY MOON when he decided to do the live performance) video was edited, but it always worked, from the extra beep that's in the song, to the volume level of the applause when he jumps from the drums. So... now see, this could go either way:

1) My suggested edit I made originally
2) "America (Live)"

Okay, someone had asked if the first three songs should be "one suite". I know how on UNDUN, the last four songs were originally one track but had to be divided into four songs. Personally, I always felt the first four songs on PARADE should be as "one suite". I realize I'm breaking the rule here, but if it's my album to compile, I play by my own rule so:

Side 1
Under The Cherry Moon Suite: a) Christopher Tracy's Parade; 2) New Position; 3) I Wonder U; 4) Under The Cherry Moon
Life Could Be So Nice
Alexa De Paris (Full Take )

Side 2
♥ Or $ (Extended Version)
Mountain (Extended Version)
Venus de Milo

====
This was the hard one, because PARADE is one of my favorite Prince albums from start to finish. As I said, I always hear the first four songs as one "movement", a bit more SGT. PEPPER or ABBEY ROAD in tone than ATWIAD ever was (IMHO) but, I'll stick with this.

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

Side 2
Starfish & Coffee
If I Was Your Girlfriend (SIGN 'O' THE TIMES movie version)
Forever In My Life (studio or SIGN 'O' THE TIMES movie version)

===
I don't know. There's "Slow Love", "Play In The Sunshine", "Hot Thing" (especially the SIGN 'O' THE TIMES movie version with the Hammond B-3 solo ), "The Cross", and everything that was recorded during this era?

If I could, I'd pull a Johnny Winter and say "make this a 3-sided double LP, with 3-songs on each side, making it a total of 9. Even doing it like this would eliminate a lot of favorites, but it would be a chance to at least add three more that is not in my lineup. I'll keep it as is.

"Forever in My Life" – 3:30
"If I Was Your Girlfriend" – 5:01

"U Got the Look" featuring Sheena Easton – 3:47
"Starfish and Coffee" (Prince, Susannah Melvoin) – 2:50
"Strange Relationship" – 4:01

1. Sign Of The Times
2. Housequake
2. The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker

Side B:
4. If I Was Your Girlfriend
5. It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
6. Adore

In a nutshell, those songs are in the exact same sequence (minus all of the other GREAT/CLASSIC joints in between..)

However, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to try and scale this album down to six songs.

And I've already driven myself half-crazy for about a half hour trying to do so because having to sacrifice "Starfish & Coffee", "The Cross", "Slow Love", and "IT'S GONNA BE A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT" is down right painful! LOL

Hands down my favorite Prince album EVER!

NOTE: The first time I heard this was a counterfeit tape that claimed to be the album, but it just sounded a bit off. I don't remember how many knock-offs there were, but it sounded like a British band covered it, made evident by some of the ways they said certain words, especially the title of "2 Nigs" That cassette version had the sides flipped, so for years I heard "Bob George" as the first song, so I'll start off that way:

Side 1
Bob George
Cindy C.
Rockhard in a Funky Place

Side 2
Scarlet Pussy (12" mix)
2 Nigs United 4 West Compton
When 2 R In Love

There are a few Camille-related songs that could be included here, such as "Feel U Up" or "Shockadelica" but I chose "Scarlet Pussy". Side 1 exits "Rockhard", Side 2 enters into "Pussy". Fair enough.

Thieves In The Temple (Remix)
I love what happens after the part that's the single edit/album mix, all the way up until and including the "I am the best, better than the rest, better than the thieves in the temple tonight" part, that to me *makes* the song. However, I'd like to hear a re-edit of the remix where the "who got the body, who got the body, who?" is moved closer to the middle, and the funky part I like is moved to the end, and gently fades out when he's doing those howls. To find a way to extend that, or to go to the multi-tracks and pull something that would extend that moment and make it better: I would love to do that.

If we are to get technical, I'd want to hear it this way, according to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tw5dRT8fYE

Part 1: 0:31 to 4:26
Part 2: 6:10 to 7:54
Part 3: 4:07 to 6:10 (and extend what's going on in the last 20 seconds if it was possible)
Part 4: 8:13 to 8:34

Part 2 would be a bit unnecessary if Part 3 could be achieved in the way I'd want it but... I'll leave it at that.

The Question Of U
New Power Generation

Side 2
Still Would Stand All Time (version from A SMALL CLUB bootleg; always preferred that over the album version)
Elephants And Flowers
Joy In Repetition (live version performed during the EMANCIPATION release party that was broadcast. I never liked this song when GRAFFITI BRIDGE came out, but when he did it in the TV special, the time away from the song made me listen to it differently and appreciate it even more. That guitar solo remains one of the sickest solos he's ever done. In fact, for anyone who has never heard or seen this, here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v94EIim_v8

It's hard to see here, but the moment Prince turns around and walks back to stage, there's a guy in the crowd who looks to be completely blown away by what he just heard. It happens around the 4:26 and while you see someone to the right side do a vicious head nod, it's better when you see a much clearer version.)

====
I really wished "Blue Light" became a huge hit for him. When I was back home in 1998, I had heard this song a lot on the radio and I thought that was odd. A lot of Hawaiian pop and "Jawaiian music" (local style reggae) tends to be very pop friendly and at times spiritual, basically doing music "mom or grandmom would like". Prince is not the first person I would expect to be covered, even though everyone would admit to liking Prince. Yet because "Blue Light" is a reggae song, that appealed to people there. I'm assuming it was a song that got a bit of airplay for him, but someone covered it and it became a Hawaiian hit.

I simply like "Blue Light" not only for its reggae vibe, but it's a laid back Prince song without anything too heavy to it.

Anyway, I'll keep it there.

I know this album has been bashed by some critics, but I liked it. I think when I had read some bad reviews, I wanted to give it a chance to appeal to me. I'm into long, drawn out songs, so the 11 minute "Come" was perfect.

Since Side 1 would be shorter, if there was a way to go to the multi-tracks and tap into what was not used with those tracks, it would be great to extend them, especially "Space".

I was going to add in the mix of "Pheromone" that was used as the theme for Video LP for awhile, but don't know if a full take exists on boots or what so... I'll keep this as it is.

Side 1
Had U
I Will
I Rock, Therefore I Am

Side 2
Right The Wrong
Chaos and Disorder
Dinner With Delores

Hard one, since almost every combination would've turned this into an EP or short album, but the album is short as is. "Had U" ends this album perfectly, so I decided to flip that idea and begin with it. I ended it with "Delores" because of the obvious use of "no more, that's the end" at the end.
