157678, wait, so Blu signed to Warner Bros to make MOVIES?!?! wtf

"I have like three films I would love to shoot. But I would need a budget for it. I’ve never seen myself rapping after 30. I’ve always seen myself doing film. I would like to make films for j e s u s, NoYork!, and Memoirs, but the films are all interchangeable. When I signed to Warner, the contract was to do a film per record. It was a big contract! But many different things have happened: the president was fired, owner replaced, A&Rs replaced. The only thing they’ve done is release Rick Ross records. So we just choose to move in our current, where everybody knows us."

mofo was tryna do some type of indie film artsy fatsy shit... and now he cant get his album released

Blu is my dude but, is he really tryna stray off into making random films and shit at the expense of his music? some off brand shit
157679, lol i think my interest in this dude has almost plummeted to zero
Posted by Oak27, Thu Nov-10-11 08:06 PM
sucks because he was an emcee i was anxious for after below the heavens
157680, he still has the potential but ...
Posted by QBoogie, Thu Nov-10-11 08:25 PM
... his recent output vocally I haven't been too crazy about. Those beat tapes however I gets down with!
157681, RE: he still has the potential but ...
Posted by Questdan, Thu Nov-10-11 09:34 PM
i think people always box artist in and expect them to be their personal performance puppet, yes its different for an artist to get signed to do films, but if thats what he wants to do then hey! lol unfortunate for us, fans of BLU as an MC...actually fans of the MC on Below the Heavens, that he's not making the music we want to hear, but if an artist isnt being true to themselves or doing what they feel 'they' need to be doing then why should they even continue?
Lol but with all that being said BLU can still go hard, check the track "SteelRemainsRaw" off his album OPEN, tho the quality sounds like he recorded it on a gameboy color the track bangs! and BLU is spitting like a top notch MC..im waiting on his next album with Exile to see where theyre gonna take it next.
157682, This tells a lot
Posted by cjr2221, Thu Nov-10-11 10:12 PM
about Blu. Like I had a feeling he was a certain type of person and this confirms it. I'll still check for his music, but I have no faith in him ummm evolving or reaching where I thought he might at one point.
157683, funny ya'll mad at him
Posted by loveluv, Fri Nov-11-11 12:16 AM
i think that shit is hot. like someone up above said ya'll want him to do what ya'll want him to do, that ain't right. ya'll acting liek he betrayed ya'll.

and a movie deal is much bigger and better than a recording contract. money upfront, not on some we are going to loan it to you and see if you recoup.

hopefully he get to live HIS dreams and not ya'll's.

respekt to dude.
157684, lol

If he wasn't on his own ish to begin with, he woulda never made the album so many want him to make *again* in the first place.
157686, just to clarify, i am a big fan of blu
Posted by LowOnMyPaper, Fri Nov-11-11 12:45 AM
and when i say that i dont just mean that i heard BTH and liked it, i mean i am a FAN of the dude. I check for everything he does and love all his output including noyork. so im with yall on the "dont box him in" level.

this post was sorta half-surprise at hearing this, half-joking, and half-concern (yes thats three halves). because really, it just seems like this dude is about to burn out soon, and itd be a damn shame to not see someone with this talent live out his potential. but like yall said, he is his own person, so church to whatever types of weird shit he wants to do next (using weird as a half-compliment, lol)
157687, he's resilient. he's not burning out no time soon.

and how he said the contract included 3 movies...but then said he needed a budget

these nuccas just be talking shit man
157690, lol...yeah that made no sense
Posted by dafriquan, Fri Nov-11-11 07:43 AM

>and how he said the contract included 3 movies...but then said
>he needed a budget
if all they gave him was the "right" to make movies then they gave him nothing. sold him the flowers from his own backyard.
157691, no one argues against this tho. i just hope you realize...
Posted by LowOnMyPaper, Fri Nov-11-11 11:27 AM
that blu's projects since then? the ones gettin passed over cus of the lofi and the "nonsense rhymes"? better than BTH. blu has long since outgrown that bth format, and i can honestly say i like his post-bth work better

^^^^^^^^tried saying that without looking like a stan. failed.
157692, RE: no one argues against this tho. i just hope you realize...
Posted by howardlloyd, Fri Nov-11-11 05:16 PM
blu is a hack on beats

and he dont even respect his own work to present the shit properly...

people can say madlibs shit is unmixed...but i have never been offended by his records

the shit blu tries to charge for? GTFOHWTBS

157693, u so jealous of dude

its obvious g

let it go
157694, ok..buddy
Posted by howardlloyd, Sat Nov-12-11 06:37 AM
...point out a dope beat he has done

point out a project that has been acclaimed like BTH

i pumped BTH...pumped it

why be jealous of blu? why not be jealous of j. cole or kendrick or k.r.i.t.?

its because those guys put time and some production values into their work instead of treating it like disposable garbage.

i know YOU don't care about production values...i do. some people content is a deal breaker, for some people the beats are a deal breaker... my deal breaker is if your shit sound like it was mixed with earbuds and recorded on behringer pieces.

between that and the "NoYork" shit...brotherman tore his draws with me

blu dont wanna battle me on beats lol
and neither do you
157695, Dude does sound heated. Lol

im still headscratching about blu soundchecking at SOBs in nyc and then deciding 4 hours before showtime to stand people up.

im sorry yall.

im living proof (aint that deep, i caught the mother of flu's and am paying dearly for it for 2 weeks in bed. most likely due to overworking) that the show goes on. so i see it as a sin to short change someone for stupid self sabotage reasons.

so already im like "d/erykah" file.

and yeah mofo throwing me under the bus on twitter still got me steamin cause he really thinking: "oh damn i killed riq"

his submission for "make my":

hell of a level to step to

benevolence giving blesings t the lesser who

catch a clue and use it

step into a lavish status that these maggts never reach

heaven speech is fluent, a nuisance to keep the devil sleep

more time to make up ya mind, before you sleepy hollow

i know you know i dont do no voodoo

moving through you

and wake up,

at the bus stop, waiting on my chauffer,

fuck THAT got to do with the narrative? and this was his SECOND submission after we told him specifically what the parameters are.

i mean yeah i love a lil "blue flowers"/keith imagery like the next guy but come on man.

i love dude.

they showed up earlier & passed out free "NoYork!" shirts to everyone
& then when it came time for him to show... well.... NoYork!

he knew what he was doing,
whether it was the right move or not.

Well I think I take your side on that, if narrative was the principle, but where is the wiggle room for being abstract? It's like there you look at BlackStar and those dude's are the perfect complement for eachother. Yasin lives in the abstract, but can remain poignant no matter what, but it helps Talib, who on most solo joints is probably, for some, too literal in his narratives. Just as an artist, I wonder if it's valid to come down on him that hard, but hey if the project had rules, I guess there are fuckin' rules.

fit the concept.

Why is that so hard for Blu and some of his fans to get?

I'm a blu fan but he made some pretty horrible decisions lately...he needs management or fewer yes men or something.

157732, i honestly think that nigga just smokes entirely too much weed

157733, I've rarely ever listened to a song after a dope verse and said,....
Posted by TheRealBillyOcean, Sat Nov-12-11 12:43 PM
"That shit was hot, but what about the concept of the song."

Example: Mobb Deep "Drink Away The Pain" after Q-Tips verse.

Just saying.
157734, a few things
Posted by Stadiq, Sat Nov-12-11 09:28 PM
1. Its not your album. Its The Roots album. If it wasn't what they wanted, its their verse to cut.

2. Its not a simple song concept- clearly The Roots are taking the idea of dropping a TIGHT/CONSISTENT concept album. Black Thought didn't even get a pass. Why should Blu?

3. Blu really does smoke entirely too much weed...
157735, i guess i read more than you.

Drake F/Rick Ross "Lord Knows"....how could ross hear that beat and think about rapping about money?!?!? Drake's verse wasn't about that either...I get the point tho, most people don't care about staying on topic but I hate that shit personally.

disappointed, what is the real issue?

everyone on here can find shit online, why are people making that big of a deal of Blu charging for some shit some consider to be sub par? why is his particular methodology so disruptive for you? does it make any difference to you what 'planet' he's on?

it's almost creeps into Jay Elect territory with you guys and Blu.
157742, ehh, you catchin' feelings
Posted by astralblak, Sun Nov-13-11 11:16 PM
I'm with you that what artist do is on them and if you wanna roll with it, roll with it. if not, don't. but "sticking up for them" also isn't doing them any service. critique IS NOT A BAD THING. Some times Blu and Jay Elec deserve the stones that get thrown at them

people though Blu was going to be more in the mold of Little Brother (Golden Age throwback music). Actually, it turns out Blu has very little interest in doing anything other than his own thing. He's very hit or miss with me but I applaud this dude's refusal to pander to purists.
157745, i think thats part of it, but thats been going on since 09

157747, thats a stretch.
Posted by sweeneykovar, Mon Nov-14-11 11:39 AM
I dont think Blu has the initial fan base to have a Lupe sized flashback and though Blu might DO things some get offended by/don't like, I doubt he'd come out his mouth to say so many stupid things like Lu did to get his lil loyal legion of haters.

Nobody gets worse backlash around here than rappers who deviate from the Lessons expectations. ?uest talking sideways about him is typically the first shot. See: ?uest outing Lupe about not liking Midnight Marauders.

157749, My only problem w/Blu is the double releasing of records
Posted by phemom, Mon Nov-14-11 03:09 PM
What he did w/J E S U S was not cool...but other than that I like that his music goes in 20 different directions. Since he released 5 projects this year, I'm excited for the albums w/Madlib & Exile...cause I have no idea what it gonna sound like. Which is hard to say for people who have released almost 10 projects thus far.
