155867, The Whispers "Keep On Loving Me" video is the definition of "swag"

That word was invented for these gentlemen right here.

And What. A. Jam!!

Whooooo!!
155868, that SONG is the definition of 'swag'
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri Sep-23-11 12:31 PM
when I put that on, I have to put the windows down and act like a boss.

and anytime that song is mentioned I think of how ?uest talked about how it drove Prince mad because he thought people were giving away his sound
155869, lol, thats interesting...I don't hear Prince in it at all
Posted by kwez, Fri Sep-23-11 01:20 PM
You just made me decide to listen to it again, and I'm not mad about that at all.

155870, I didn't either

which is why that story is so hilarious. maybe they (Leon Sylvers III) took an idea that he was going to use first? at best, I could see the Time doing the main groove but not the whole song
155871, RE: I didn't either
Posted by Joe Corn Mo, Fri Sep-23-11 02:38 PM
>I could see the Time doing the main groove but not the
>whole song.

yeah, the keyboard riff sounds like something the time might do,
but the sound wouldn't sound this smooth in the end.

noone got under P's skin more than Leon.

to the point he found it virtually impossible to believe that Sylvers couldn't be that smart on his own to transform overnight.

but yeah: whispers. "shake down", and especially "Dead Giveaway" (shalamar) got under his skin.

but then again. i got a soundcheck of him rehearsing the shit outta "you are in my system" like it was his own song.

and his general comments on those not available to public (humble brag i know i know---but i can only share my personal truth right okayplayer? lol)--his general steeze was he like that shit ("talking heads gone love this one", "you ever been to paradise garage? whooo man!", "mojo gone eat this one up!", "youre listening to the sounds of detroits own wm??, where you will hear: the time, kool & the gang, the bar kays, and this new jam from prince (this was the 50 min Ice Cream Castles rehearsals)

---so in general i learned that he was very much in tune to what was going on black radio and the club and got his karaoke on too.

but leon boy.

hahahahaha

maybe P was tryna holler at angie, charmanine or olympia
155873, this is a hilarious image/mental sound
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Sep-26-11 01:49 PM
>but then again. i got a soundcheck of him rehearsing the shit
>outta "you are in my system" like it was his own song.

somehow I got the idea. That Leon thing is still funny... when I hear things like "Check It Out" I can almost see it

and definitely in how his sound translates to Jimmy and Terry's sound...

155876, his rehearsals give it away
Posted by revolution75, Mon Sep-26-11 05:14 PM
From Talking Heads, Kool & The Gang, TTD to Alexander O'Neal

If Leon got under his skin, the firing of Jam and Lewis makes a lot of sense.

155877, always
Posted by revolution75, Fri Sep-23-11 09:55 PM
loved that song and vid

AND

i think alan got it wrong on his story. Tonight (which was the 1st single off that album) I can see but I just dont see Keep on Loving Me.
155878, Amazing song, one of my most prized 12" singles.
Posted by third_i_vision, Fri Sep-23-11 12:38 PM

^^^^one of the funniest things ive read this year
155891, the Temps 'Treat Her Like A Lady' sounds like a Whispers song.
Posted by SoWhat, Fri Sep-23-11 06:01 PM
i guess what i mean is it sounds like a Sylvers production.

ever since i heard that song i've known it sounds unlike a Temps song but i couldn't put my finger on who/what it sounds like. i love the song, btw and always have.

but right now it hit me. the Whispers/Sylvers productions. that's it. DUH! how'd i not make that connection until now?

as for this...LOL @ the video. totally ridiculous. the song reminds me of living in Vegas in the early 80s b/c that's where i was in the Solar Records era. all Solar releases sound like 80s Vegas to me. very glitzy. flashy.
155892, i can hear that.
Posted by MISTA MONOTONE, Fri Sep-23-11 08:15 PM
incidentally, those are two of my favorite songs in life.
155893, Ralph Johnson and Al Mckay from Earth, wind and Fire Co Produced
Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sat Sep-24-11 03:26 AM
treat her like a lady with Ollie Woodson.

i remember back in 83 being hyped that Al Mckay and Ralph Johnson were doing co Production elsewhere because only Verdine White had gotten some side shine from the guarded area of Maurice White.

Posted by mistermaxxx08, Sat Sep-24-11 12:18 AM
my head was all in the sun roof bumping Hey Scotty! Yeah. Leon Sylvers put his foot in this jam and the harmony and coldness is timeless.

i wanted my own Kaptain Kangaroo Walter and Scotty Moustache back in the day Fo SHO!

that BamBoard was blazing on this cut.

this Jam was what I called 7 Up Sparkling Funk.

155914, Who are these old guys?
Posted by JeffyTheWiggman, Sat Sep-24-11 12:17 PM
I'm not into old men, but the twins are pretty sexy. That would make what I'd call a SexxJeff sandwich.

Posted by Bombastic, Sat Sep-24-11 05:41 PM
I've enjoyed almost every joint I've ever heard but never owned an album.
155917, I wanna say start with when they went w/Soul Train Records....
Posted by briwil25, Sat Sep-24-11 09:18 PM
but then when they first got there, they didn't really knock em out the park until like '78-'79 hits wise.

But if you want a full course meal?

These right here are all you need:

http://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Slow-Jams-Vol-1/dp/B001BA7LY6/ref=ntt_mus_dp_dpt_6

http://www.amazon.com/Greatest-Slow-Jams-2-Whispers/dp/B000056O1R/ref=ntt_mus_dp_dpt_9

I sometimes hate to recommend Anthologies and Greatest Hits cause I like to hear albums in their entirety.

I think there's a Greatest Hits of some sort from their years on the Janus label.

The first 3 Janus *pause* albums have a REALLY strong Philly Soul vibe.
155918, Thanks for this
