>he brags about being cool, >but the undertone of it all is that he's NOT cool (in a >stereotypical way). >but it works for him because he's so comfortable w/ himself >that his UNcoolnees turns into a magnatic charisma. so he >ends up beeing a cool ass motherfucker. > > >remeber in 777-9311 when he get rejected by a girl >and resorts to just screaming out his number? >"i KNOW i've got to be cooler than this cat you're sitting >with. >COME ON!" he pleads, presuably while being dragged away >from this woman by three of his friends. "777-9311!" he >shouts, >as he is escorted out of the club (probably). lol > > >which is not to say that morris day doesn't get laid a lot. >but his tactics are different from rick james'. > > > >morris day's come-ons are clearly insincere, >but his smile makes you want to believe them anyway.
this is exactly why I thought Morris was "cool", too. because he was obviously full of crap with all his braggadocio and "uncool", but somehow... he wasn't.
>rick james: > >makes no attempt to even put on airs of 'sophistication.' >his clothes make everybody in the mainstream uncomfortable. >his clothes and hair tell you right up front >that he is an outsider. and fuck you if you don't like it. > > >rick james' ballads (attempt) to sound as if >he means every word. it's not tounge in cheek like morris. > > >rick james explicitly SAYS he is a freak, >morris day simply implied it (convincingly).
Yeah. Rick represented a different kind of "R&B Hero"... he was the anti-Prince to me IMO.
