And groups like Odd Future are popular specifically
because bloggers like you have ruined the artistic
landscape of hip-hop with your snobbiness.

This is why Odd Future is such a breath of fresh air-

They are nicer than your favorite "meaningful" MC.

They are more creative than your favorite hipster artist.

They can't legally drink.

They wanna be famous, and are going to do it their way.

>Just because they have creative control and use it doesn't
>make what they're creating worthy of respect, beyond the fact
>they're succeeding.

And just because an artist has lyrics that are "meaningful"
doesn't mean they are worthy of respect.

I mean, we can go back and forth on this all day.

Some of the greatest artists, in every genre, have also
been the most explosively offensive. Why can we say this?

Because art is art, and we like it because it moves us,
not because it does our homework and taxes for us.

>I respect the way they've branded and
>marketed themselves with a consistent style, but the substance
>behind that style is nowhere to be found. Wu-tang had style,
>Wu-tang had creative control, but Wu-Tang, at least some of
>the time, would attempt to address topics of substance.

LOL -- what substance did Wu-Tang kick? Bizarre 5% diatribes?
Songs about pussy and weed? The Kung Fu/swordsman metaphors?
Cocaine and drug dealers stories?

Sure, C.R.E.A.M. was a nice story about "coming up," but
we like that song mostly because the beat was incredible,
and it SOUNDED good.

Hell, even 'Triumph' wasn't about shit, really. It was a
posse cut where everyone was saying random nice things
about themselves and their style. Still one of the best
posse cuts ever.

Hell, without METHOD MAD being a SEX OBJECT Wu-Tang never
gets off the fucking group when it comes to popularity.

Motherfuckers weren't "educated" by that. We loved Wu Tang
because they were a bunch of bad motherfuckers who made music
that SOUNDED GOOD.

That's it.

You're wildly overrating the "substance" of Wu-Tang.

> Again, your argument seems to be 'I don't care about
>substance, overwhelm me with style and I'm happy. Dazzle me
>with special effects and costumes and I could give a fuck what
>the movie is about'..which is the opposite of what I'm looking
>for, and I'm entitled to not want the same shit you want.

What exactly ARE you looking for?

Because I can give you hundreds of boring, uninteresting
artists who say "meaningful" shit.

>People like nirvana because it was counter-culture, but they
>ALSO happened to have a genius song-writer penning opuses.

BWAHAHAHAA.

You're just making shit up now.

That is NOT why Nirvana was POPULAR. And no, they were not
"genius song-writers" by any definition. Their biggest FANS
have even admitted that they were far better musically than
lyrically.

Nirvana is one of the best ever because they had *it* and
their music sounded GREAT. They had a style and a SOUND.

I know that you're old, but trying to inject too much meaning
into Nirvana is asinine. They were popular for the same reasons
that Odd Future is.

>Name a song that OFWGFTA has made that is about something. The
>most advanced concept I could find was them talking about
>buying shit at the supermarket. That's what I mean by lack of
>substance, it's a pretty simple concept to grasp. They aren't
>saying anything, not even remotely. Can I at least get a
>glimmer of them having a point? Is that too much to ask? I
>bet they'd even admit they have no point, I don't think you
>need to be such a fanboy.

This sounds a lot like the arguments white people used to
chide hip-hop in general early on: "All they do is brag."

That's really what Odd Future does -- they talk bad about
shit they don't like, they talk great about themselves.

Just like in some of BDP's best songs.

Just like in some of Rakim's best songs.

Just like in some of the best ROCK songs of all time.

Music is music.

If you want boring songs about things, go to sleep while
listening to 'Beautiful Struggle' or the thousands of other
albums that rappers make "about" things that are snooze
worthy.

>Public Enemy is good music, and apparently, you do NEED to
>hear them.

a) I'm a bigger PE fan than you are

b) PE's music fell the fuck off when it stopped SOUNDING
GOOD. The message was still there. They started to suck
and YOU stopped listening because it SOUNDED LIKE SHIT and
because they lost their *it* factor.

>I'm all for people pushing boundaries and being individuals.
>I'm not knocking that. I celebrate it, it needs to happen more
>often. It would just be nice if they did that without being
>mindless.

You sound old and bitter.

>I agree, I hope they keep making the industry bend to their
>will. But I also hope they use their power for something
>beyond just 'style' and 'shock rap'.

I don't care what they make. As long as its creative
and sounds good.

>Real as in substantive. Having meaning. Again, this is a
>pretty simple concept to grasp for most people. I'm talking
>about addressing any topic beyond cartoonish drug use, rape,
>and silly shit. These kids aren't hardcore, one of them just
>got sent to BOARDING SCHOOL by his parents for rapping about
>the shit he does. And you're an 'adult' listening to them talk
>about rape and huffing gasoline, nodding your head, because
>they're doing it with so much 'style'. Sorry I can't join you
>and I'm sure I'm not the only one who notices their material
>is completely juvenile and devoid of content.

You sound old and bitter.

>"No, people like them because the music sounds good."
>And you say my arguments are terrible? I'd rather be a snob
>than a fanboy jumping on a bandwagon. Call it like it is, they
>have style, they have skills, and they're going to be
>stars...but their music is empty. I'm sure if you asked them,
>they wouldn't front like they're saying anything important
>beyond the typical teenager 'fuck the world' perspective,
>which isn't enough for me to go crazy over.

Honestly, you sound old and bitter.
