148647, So did Ciara get dropped by Jive or not?
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Thu Feb-10-11 10:52 AM
Anybody know?

(Anybody care?)
148648, All jazze pha wanted her to do was let him get on top
Posted by krazykid18, Thu Feb-10-11 10:56 AM
since she left that nigga her career has been a downward spiral, and finally Jiv said 3 Lp's of underperformance time to cut losses.
148649, did she ever explain why she left dude?

148653, I'm not sure why people (myself included) are so invested
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Thu Feb-10-11 11:18 AM
in this Ciara saga.

For me, I know it's not because I wish Ciara ill in any way, but it's just that she seems to epitomize a certain era in the music business... and watching the downward trajectory of her career is like literally watching the music industry crumble.

If Ciara gets dropped, it becomes official that the Age of the Video Star is over.

(And I'm not sure what it means for Janet's future albums considering that Cici is cut from the Janet mold... probably nothing; Janet is trying to change her steez anyway)

Also, I guess Ciara is compelling because despite the fact that it's been clear to everybody that she's been in trouble the past few years, she insists on putting up the appearance that nothing is wrong and hasn't attempted to adapt to the changing market at all.
148654, Well that fact Janet is a Jackson didn't hurt
Posted by OldPro, Thu Feb-10-11 12:23 PM
but she was more than a video star... let's not act like that girl didn't string together some classic or close to classic albums. Having one of the best producer teams ever while they were in their prime was huge. Ciara has basically rode the coattails of a couple singles for years now. Sooner or later her career was going to come to a stop just off the fact she hasn't released anything worth a damn since album #2.

Posted by krazykid18, Thu Feb-10-11 11:21 AM
Janet was a video darling, video don't mean shit anymore, so to laugh at Ciara is foolish, Janet's success had more to do with her video than any talent she had, her stage show game was the beginning of the coregrapher plans out my whole show feel that Usher/Britney template.
148657, Rihanna is surviving so I'm pretty sure Janet would be ok
Posted by OldPro, Thu Feb-10-11 12:26 PM
If she was coming the same way now as she did in her prime. It's all about the songs and Janet had songs for days.

148659, and these days, isn't Janet really going the 'diva' route?
Posted by lonesome_d, Thu Feb-10-11 01:00 PM
I don't have the depth of knowledge/experience wit her you guys do (my little sister at age 12 or so jamming to 'Nasty Boys' = hard to overcome), but it seems to me that over the past few years she's really refocusing her image on elegance, like she's setting out to conquer the Quiet Storm market instead of remaining a pop star.

I want to make a crack about dueting on standards with Rod Stewart. *shrug*

Long story sort I say she's a big enough star, and nipplegate is far enough behind her, that any declining video appeal is overcomeable with good marketing and material.
148660, Yeah, she's singing while sitting on a stool now

148671, it was just a better song and more subtly written than what she does

now.

really though it was just that her new songs seem to lack any sort of memorable content.
148672, the 'memorable' part to me was more just a byproduct of Lil Jon's sound
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Feb-11-11 04:44 PM
I never really liked that song much though so maybe I'm the wrong person to comment on it.

I don't really consider Ciara to be much more of an act worth studying as anyone like Regina, Tiffany, Cathy Dennis, Ashanti or any other dance-pop or pop-r&b 'artist' of past generations.
148673, I love that chick. IMHOP Baddest chick in the game.

i BOUGHT her 2nd album. BOUGHT it. that was 2006, granted, the last year ppl bought albums. i actually liked it a lot.

but when she came back, she was just.....wack. trying too hard, being uninteresting & very generic. she waited too long to come out w/an album, and rihanna had completely crowded out the not-beyonce space for black pop chicks.
148676, ding!

Posted by come on people, Thu Feb-10-11 12:16 PM
after her collabo with t-pain completely & utterly flopped, it just REEKED of desperation. collab w/JT, p-pop all over the video....it was just sad. & then even THAT was barely a hit. yet she doubled down on that on the next project w/"ride."

her career makes me yearn for the days when artists figured they couldn't make a career out of music, and when you did the "where are they now?" segments, they were off doing something COMPLETELY non-music related like being a lawyer or owning a light mfg company lol*. now folks jump through hoops to try to stretch that 15 minutes out for as long as possible.

*like on unsung, 1 of the members of heatwave (i think) left to become a stockbroker. really? that's unthinkable nowadays.
148678, that video proved her career was over. like you said, DESPERATE

I went to regular club like 5 times last year, well maybe more if I include the holidays but I barely discover any songs at the club, I've never asked my friends "what's that song they're playing ?". Maybe I heard one of her songs but I honestly can't remember. I couldn't hum or name one of her track to save my live. I know she's cute and a bit manish when she moves but that's all.

She made a "NIGGER" album and was released amongst giants. They( JIVE) wasn't fucking with that MJ album and then R.kelly as well. Plus Kanye and Nicki wiped they funk on the charts and Eminem still has his sperm on the charts. BET banned the video and the other video was too much like a mix of janet videography. Her album is hot but not over the top compared to the material relesed on the saame date. The sales goes to her team though and little to the label so that's the good thing. I think she's going on tour. I think she was done it took too long to record the album still this was her baby and the fanbase couldn't push the sales harder but it's going to sell for the long time. I'm sure she'll get signed to Def jam or Universal

I need to grab the rest of the movie today....I REALLY wanna see if they tried to have Ciara act like she could actually sing. The young version of her character was ok. Pitchy.

I am glad I wasn't the only one who was mystified as to why this movie was even being made starring Ciara though.

148739, The way y'all build these artists then violently knock them down is
Posted by ramaj1, Mon Feb-14-11 10:31 AM
amazing.

Just a few years ago, Ciara was the toast of the town. When you thought she was winning, you were all on her ass cheeks.

Now that she's slipped on the commerical front, you act like you were never on her in the first place.

I guess Rihanna or Nicki Minaj will face the same treatment in the a year or two when the media backs away from them and finds someone else younger, hotter and dumber to hype up.

148740, who the fuck built up CIARA in The Lesson? GTFOH

Posted by ramaj1, Tue Feb-15-11 07:14 PM
The fairweather adoration for Minaj and Rihanna is sickening to me. It's so fake. They only get love from OKP because they're current pop-media darlings. Not because they make great music. I expect that from Popjustice or TMZ but not a site of snarky, psuedo-intellectual music snobs.
148744, You didn't answer the question.
Posted by AFKAP_of_Darkness, Tue Feb-15-11 07:29 PM
When was anybody here praising Ciara? Or, for that matter, RIhanna or Nicki Minaj?

There's a couple of folks here and there who like their music okay, but hardly anybody who really rides for them.

Sure, posts about them do get a lot of attention because they're both attractive women. But I've not seen any overpowering adoration for their music.

I still call bullshit.
148745, Are you blind?
Posted by ramaj1, Thu Feb-17-11 03:03 PM
Go into GD right now.

There are motherfuckers (most of whom I suspect to be gay males) who were ready to bite my head off when I suggested that Nicki isn't all that. Or that her "achievements" aren't as impressive as they delude themselves in believing that they are.

Ditto with Rihanna.

They get tons of praise around these parts. Their only distractors are the types who turn their noses up at anything commercial. But since OKPs are so obsessed with an artist's record sales and level of fame, they may be in the minority.
148746, lol....you're a fucking idiot.
Posted by come on people, Thu Feb-17-11 03:27 PM
(1) nobody in the lesson is riding hard for any of those people
(2) nobody in that GD post is riding for nicki minaj; they're calling out your lack of logical reasoning skills.
(3) you're a fucking idiot.

Posted by ramaj1, Thu Feb-17-11 05:37 PM
at people in general. Not OKP specifically, you dumb ass. READ next time.

And Nicki's fake ass gets kissed all over this site. You and the rest of her gay male bastion were ready to lynch me in one post over there when I pointed out that her "success" wasn't all that impressive. So, please STFU. And your posts show who the true idiot is. LOL.

but if i were to choose songs by ciara that someone should hear -- the tippy-top of her output -- she gets 3 songs. most of the stuff on evolution is fun & cool, but forgettable.
148752, She lost herself and her audience has just about moved on

She was poised to be the next urban pop star and she tried waaay too hard to just be a pop star. She lost the urban edge that made her dope. That and a whole album with The Dream wasn't a good idea...btw how the hell is dude still doing whole albums. He had bad results Ciara, Mariah, that wack ass Vanity Six clone group he tried to put together. Dude, must have a hell of an agent...but I digress. Bottom line, if she stayed in her lane then she would have been cool. She tried too hard to take it to the next level before she had a solid fanbase that would follow her.
148753, Dude is good for a cut here and there

but for a full length? His songwriting sucks. Beat-wise I think he does some interesting things but sometimes his steeze just seems like a forced combo of faux Prince, faux Kells and a whole lot of other stuff in between.
148754, It's official now

Shooting back at rumors that Jive Records had dropped Ciara from its roster, the R&B princess is telling her side of the story. In a Facebook post on her page, CiCi tells her fans that she has asked to be released from her contract with Jive after they failed to give her control over decisions regarding her past two albums. She explains that with her latest single “Gimmie That,” the label tried to prevent the track from getting play on the radio and that she had to fund its promotion out of her own pocket. Get the full scoop from Ciara herself.

This week the net has been a buzz of the rumor that I have been dropped from my label. At this point that rumor is false.. It is true that I have asked and I pray that my label will release me. I have had some great times and success with my label, but sometimes like all great things, its at that point where I feel we don’t share the same views on who I am as a artist. The past two albums have been very frustrating for me. At times there were songs I chose to lead a project and I was ignored! This project, I even tried to get Gimmie Dat started I spent tens of thousands of my own money only to hear the radio pds tell me my label didn’t want the song played. I even spent more than one hundred thousand dollars out of my pocket on the video to bring my vision to it and still no label support. I do understand that some labels are not financially supporting their artists and I have become one of them. You, my fans, know that I strive to do my best to deliver to my you the best songs and creative vision I possibly can. I’m dedicated to my music, performance and to my fans! I’ve tried to be a team player with the label only to have compromised what I truly believed.. And was not given the right opportunity to promote and inform my fans of the release of this album..I have so much of me as a artist I still want to give to the world and my fans. A release would allow me to go be creative with people who care and understand me as a artist. In a short time, I will be able to bring to you a new music energy and a visual excitement! Thank you so much for standing by me through the good, bad, and the confusion. I love you all.

Love Ciara
