Posted by johnbook, Fri Jun-18-10 11:27 AM
It wasn't a Euro-centric yodel, man, it was just "YAKAAAAA-YAKAAAAA-eeeeeeeee-eeeeeeeeee" and I was on some tabs at the time, i thought I saw god in the form of cottage cheese. I even approached her, she looked at me like a queen saint of saints, and she cut off my belt. My belt, man, I saved 2 dollars to buy it, it was ethnic and everything because my guru made it. Or my guru's chick, you know how it is with the macrame tent and everything, man. EVERYTHING.

Oh, here's my lid.

Posted by johnbook, Fri Jun-18-10 11:23 AM
There's a buzz going around about some big festival in upstate New York, where Hendrix, The Beatles, The Doors, and a group with some members of The Byrds. Fuck, I love the Byrds, some of that peyote Jenny gave me was amazing. Not sure how to get there, but I have some friends going to Maine so maybe I can hitch a ride, man. Looks like this show will be as cool and contained as Monterey, I just hope I don't get busted for my lid.

141862, Good call on Sam Cooke
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri Jun-18-10 01:04 PM
That's usually how it is with most singers. I read somewhere that Otis Redding used to sing like Little Richard until he found his own style. Makes sense with them both being from Macon, Georgia. Speaking of Otis Redding, I read somewhere his old manager just started a record label out of Georgia. Supposed to be releasing American stuff in that Jeff Beck style.

141866, Suspicious Minds is proof positive that Elvis is still The King
Posted by Call It Anything, Fri Jun-18-10 12:20 PM
Who doubted? Seriously? Step up and take your L.

The TV concert on NBC last year showed that he's still as captivating as ever and can still hold an audience in the palm of his hand. No need for amplifiers or go-go dancers, just sideburns and a jump suit.

"In The Ghetto" was huge and "Suspicious Minds" is just on another level. If this song doesn't go to #1 I'll know that the Hippies have won.

Seriously though, who else from the 50's is still laying it down like that? Let's run down the list:

Bobby Darin? Floated on a Lazy River, Somewhere Beyond The Sea of relevancy.

Paul Anka? It's Time To Cry, Lonely Boy, nobody gives a fuck about your old ass.

Pat Boone? Tried to leave acting for singing (Elvis better at both), and failed. Ain't That A Shame?

Perry Como? I'll admit that Perry still brings it, but his audience aged with him. The young crowd? They don't think he's so A-Adorable.

Frank Sinatra? Frank can still sing but the man picks the worst songs and arrangements. Strangers In The Night was a needle in a haystack for that guy. People were checking for Nancy for a minute and Frank milked a little out of that but he should just go and hang out with Dean Martin on Thursday nights now.

At the end of the day, Elvis is the only singer from the 50s that survived the 60s. Oh and he ain't done. I can assure you that your children in the 70s are going to be listening to new Elvis records. Shit maybe even the 80s.

I was with my old lady, and not all of them are brothers, but they are all brothers, because all men are brothers. Get it, Allman Bro... man this is deep. The way the guy plays a slide with his finger, he does more with that one finger than I and my old lady. In fact, my old lady gave a drink to brother Gregg and never came back. I guess she's not my old lady anymore.

But these guys are mean, two guitarists doing a dual thing like they did in the 50's, but more bluesy. I do not see these guys ever getting on the radio, but fuck radio, you know? I see good things for them and some of those other white bands from down there. Don't know what they call it, but it is sweetness.

These two have been touring together forever, have great on-stage chemistry, got a bunch of kids, and just seem perfect for each other.

I just don't know how they do it. It's really inspiring.

I really dig this new rocksteady sound coming out of Jamaica. Slowing down ska and adding some American rhythm and blues alements.

I don't know how Cher fits in exactly, but I could dig it.

Convo between two kids in Minneapolis:

Kid 1: "That little dude on the north side sure is a midget...Who would name their kid Prince, anyway?

Kid 2: "But I heard he learned how to play piano at the age of 7..".

Kid 1: "Man, that's jive. Aint no little kid can play the piano...."

Kid 2: "That's what one brother told me."

Kid 2: "Man, shut up. You act like some black kid from Minneapolis is going to be the next Sly Stone or something....."
