Strong Island:
EPMD
DE LA SOUL
PUBLIC ENEMY
ERIC B & RAKIM

Westchester:
BRAND NUBIAN
PETE ROCK & CL SMOOTH

Just goes to show how deep NY is with its hip hop.. thats not even mentioning artists from any of the boroughs.. can you name a more talented 30 mile radius in hip hop???

NOPE!!!

138498, Just out of curiosity, which EPMD album are you picking?
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Jan-15-10 11:57 AM
138499, UNFINISHED BUSINESS
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Fri Jan-15-10 12:05 PM
...front to back i think its their best album ..even the wack cut "you had too much to drink" is a cult classic to EPMD fans ...but DJ SCRATCH is a another reason this is their best album ..i've said it before, he was doing scratches back then that blew me away ..i dont remember anyone else with cuts as dope as DJ SCRATCH at this time

138500, the cuts on So Whatcha Sayin were some next-level shit in 1989

138501, My favorite cuts on a track EVER.
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Jan-15-10 01:49 PM
And it's one of my five favorites hip-hop songs ever.
138502, yeah, that's on the short list for 'Greatest Rap Single Ever' to me

Posted by CanUooooFeeLiT, Fri Jan-15-10 05:20 PM
Its one of the reasons why Unfinished Business is my least favorite album from EPMD(pre breakup) but So Wha'cha Sayin iz my favorite song from them. Everything on UB pales in comparison to it.

138504, huh?
Posted by Lil Rabies, Sun Jan-17-10 02:57 AM
What are you listening to?
138505, I prefer "Business as Usual"
Posted by mrhood75, Fri Jan-15-10 01:51 PM
That's front to back my favorite, and pretty fucking flawless. Besides, even if I can tolerate "You Had to Much to Drink," "It's Time to Party" is still ass-awful, even with that decent MFSB sample.
138506, You Had To Much To Drink cracks me up even though it's corny
Posted by Bombastic, Fri Jan-15-10 02:38 PM
It's Time To Party is the only true throwaway, that's Unfinished's 'The Steve Martin' or 'DJ K La Boss'.

Out of Unfinished or Business as Usual, whenever I'm listening to either one of those I'm convinced it's their best.

I agree that there's no filler on Business as Usual, I feel like the first two have more signature EPMD songs that you'll hear in old-school mixes and 'Crossover' to me falls short of any of those but the album cuts on Business As Usual are fierce.

The drunk-flow on 'Rap Is Outta Control' is a personal favorite, Hardcore gave us Redman, Scratch murders Funky Piano & Give The People.

I feel like listening to this album now.

138507, RE: I prefer "Business as Usual"
Posted by CanUooooFeeLiT, Fri Jan-15-10 05:24 PM
Yeah that's my favorite EPMD album. They're lyrics were much improved and they advanced their production style. They brought in the 90s lovely with their brand of east coast boom bap.
138508, i didn't become an epmd *FAN* until business as usual.
Posted by dula dibiasi, Sat Jan-16-10 09:21 PM
i copped the first 2 when they dropped + thought they were dope. i didn't really love those albums tho outside of a few standouts (so what u sayin, payback, you're a customer)

i was an big NWA/PE/eric+ra head @ the time + epmd wasn't quite on that level for me from 88-90

business as usual was some next shit tho. everything abt that album was fucking incredible.
138509, Business Never Personal never gets the love it deserves
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Jan-15-10 04:04 PM
Crossover? Headbanger? Chiiiillll? It's Goin' Down?!? Man, that album was my shit

And yes, So Watcha' Sayin' is a top 5 song...
138510, RE: Business Never Personal never gets the love it deserves
Posted by CanUooooFeeLiT, Fri Jan-15-10 05:27 PM
slept on for sure.

I was a little disppointed when I bought the album in 92 but over a little bit of time I began to really like the album. EPMD's 4 album run was VERY impressive!!!
138511, this one is my choice,
Posted by spew120, Sat Jan-16-10 04:58 PM
UB in second

They need something to hold on to.

Geto Boys
Outkast
8Ball & MJG
Goodie Mob
UGK

There's five of the top ten, so somebody has got their math wrong.
138535, funny u talkin time frame & all these groups are 15-20 years old too

and as much as I love Goodie Mob...2 great-classic albums and 1 we won't mention doesn't give them enough to put them into the top 10.

and I would give a serious fan UGK but not Eightball & MJG though.
138538, yeah, Goodie ain't in mine either but Ball & MJG felt more egregious

8Ball & MJG have a GREAT track record.
138540, uh 8ball and mjg git more classic albums than goode ugk kast

Posted by Menphyel7, Sat Jan-16-10 01:29 PM
don't recgonize the impact, infulence and sheer greatness of 8ball and mjg.

the fact you denyin comin out hard, on the top of the world, and in our lifetime says alot.

then both of they solo albums Lost and no more glory was amazin.

its the fact they was a little more crunk lookin and get buck then the safer ones of UGK and outkast...they didn't have the outhere personality of a pimp c or an andre.....A laid back "he speaks well" of a bun b or...they more ouffputin and wayyy more southern.

YOu really need to listen to they catlouge from they first 4 albums cause they touch on an ass of topics rip an ass of different type beats and laiddown foundation for alot to come forth...gooodie mob def owe a debt to 8ball and mjg.

only someone not in the know would say 8ball and mjg got classic albums would be a reach.

138545, I'm not saying anything negative about them
Posted by Anonymous, Sun Jan-17-10 06:01 AM
but there is a difference between a classic like ATLiens and In My Lifetime.

8ball & MJG just aren't on the same level as far as their legacy.

I like those dudes, a lot.

but I've got to be real here, and saying they're on the same level as Kast is crazy.

and listing ALL those albums you named as 'classic' is throwing the word around a little too much.

Kast is a top 10 group/duo...UGK, 8ball & MJG and Goodie just don't make that cut imo.

if someone wants to throw UGK or Ball & MJG right at number 10 for certain reasons I wouldn't be mad, but they're just not on that same level as ATCQ, Kast, PE, Wu etc.

138546, This is real talk...
Posted by HotepSuns365, Mon Jan-18-10 07:24 AM
for the life of me i don't understand how people online deny ball, and g......but swear by outkast, ugk, and goodie mob....
138547, maybe because
Posted by Anonymous, Mon Jan-18-10 02:45 PM
that's how it was before the internet when the albums came out.

like I said, they may have been big down south but Ball and G never were on the same level as Kast.

I don't even know why we are debating this.

Honestly, Kast or Ball & MJG?

you're telling me Ball & MJG has the better albums?
138548, what region did I say sucked??

Atlanta is only like 400,000 in population....Long Beach is 500,000, most people never realize that.

It's weird...most of the San Fernando Valley, such as Northridge, is still considered "Los Angeles" city...but that's definitely more like the "suburbs" than Compton, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Gardena, Lynwood, etc. etc.
138565, Nah, ATL is now a lil' over half a mil nowadays.

That's just mean... that really hurt fam. I think Drake is a decent rapper, but until he drops an album I can't really judge him.

>yes, why would you ask that?

I guess when you really start comparing groups, and you slide in a few acts that were essentially a rapper and a DJ... makes me evaluate a little more. De La is a group, PE, Kid n Play... is Heavy D and the Boyz a group? He had a DJ AND two dancers. What about Ice T and Evil E(i think that was his DJ's name)

lol, but thats what most people will say.. Drake MATTERS and Rakim is irrelevant.. i'm not making this stuff up.. its actually people that crazy on this site

You make a good point.. how important were the Psychotic Neurotics?? Da Bulldogs?? Da Boyz?? If its dudes that just hang around, not too important.. Dancers & DJ's?? More important... i mean, BDP was mostly just KRS..

I wouldn't even say "contenders" or "above", but I believe Black Star could've had a shot if they'd put out more material. The Fugees as well. UGK. I believe Little Brother's body of work is very respectable. Now I'm really starting to realize that groups are far and few these days. I believe if you took each of these groups best albums and gave it a fair look, you'd be surprised how close the grades would be. We're part of a very different era of Hip Hop though... the things we respect and look for in a good record, the kids don't see. It's a sales driven indusrty, and everybody wants to associate themselves with the industry leaders vs who's actually making great music.

Fugees & BlackStarr should have made multiple classics over the the years.. its a shame they didnt.. UGK aint my cup of tea (except some of the early stuff) but I can respect that as a top ten since they have a large fanbase.. Little Brother is EASILY the best new group this decade..

138599, Will Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth ever drop off of the top 10?
Posted by DJPrimetime, Sun Jan-17-10 03:04 PM
Not likely and both Mays and Aaron haven't picked up a bat in almost 40 years. Yes, people might have surpassed their homerun totals, but they did it in eras of expansion and steroids. Both of them were game changers, as was Ruth and even though people might hit more homers than them, they will most likely never drop out of the top 10 as all-time players because of their sheer dominance.

Cy Young began pitching over 100 years ago and he has yet to be surpassed. It doesn't matter how long ago you entered, it matters what you did and the legacy you left. All of those groups that Chief-One mentioned left a legacy strong enough for people to talk about them 20 years later and for DJ's around the world to spin their music ahead of alot of joints that came out in the 20 years that their music has been out.

138600, how much of it is nostalgia vs true greatness... Some people believe
Posted by kysersozey, Sun Jan-17-10 03:23 PM
Elvis is and will always be the king, why?
Can no one else be the King Of Pop? or the Queen of Soul?
If Beyonce started calling herself the Queen of Soul how would you
feel?

I am at the point where I can admit those artist were great, but
it doesn't mean they can't be dethroned. Rakim was a lyrical dream, but does that mean Nas wasn't better? Lupe? Can anybody be lyrically better than Rakim and it be okay?
138601, ^ mad and gay
Posted by Ill Jux, Sun Jan-17-10 03:56 PM
why? who knows
138602, mad? but you the only one throwing insults HA!!
Posted by kysersozey, Sun Jan-17-10 04:11 PM
if anybody's mad it's you, bcuz 106 n Park ain't playing Busdrivers new joint
138603, who?
Posted by Ill Jux, Sun Jan-17-10 11:30 PM
what grown nigguh over 18 watches 106&park. i have literally never seen an ep of that show.

nigguh u gay.
138604, But how many more have came along that are better than those three?
Posted by DJPrimetime, Mon Jan-18-10 06:55 AM
So while Mays and Aaron might have been better players than Ruth, who surpassed Mays and Aaron since they retired? Griffey Jr? Bonds? And that is debatable as Mays was really a step ahead of Griffey and Bonds in terms of speed and defense. But even if people say those two, so we had two players in ALL of MLB in the 35-40 years since Aaron / Mays retired that are on their level. Everyone else ... not even close. So yeah since Rakim came out there might be a FEW MC's that are on his level, but not many.

I don't know if I could even name 10 groups that have come out in the past decade......and not these one-off Producer/MC studio collabos but actual groups.
