132669, Let's talk Hood Classics
Posted by OldPro, Wed Feb-03-10 09:56 AM
You know those songs or albums that got so much play on your block that you'd have thought they were topping the charts ... I remember going back to NY in 83 with my boy to visit his cousin and being shocked they didn't know Steve Arrington had a solo album out... you couldn't go anywhere out in Cali that summer without hearing Weak at the Knees and Nobody Can Be You ... It fascinates me how a song, album or artist can blow up regionally but not make any noise somewhere else.

Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Feb-03-10 09:58 AM
I still think they were better than RFTW, especially that first EP
but DAMN that lead singer was really taking that pre-'81 Prince thing to a hilarious end

132671, Dreamboy got some run out here in Northern Cali too
Posted by OldPro, Wed Feb-03-10 10:09 AM
Mainly the slow jam .. I Promise I Do? Was that the name? Any way, they had some jams on that album but they weren't seeing Ready For The World. I remember the day we got the RFTW album in our shipment ... all we had to go on was the lead single "Tonight" so we weren't expecting what we heard. Oh Sheila, Digital Display, Human Toy, I'm The One Who Loves You .... no way in hell could Dreamboy match the juiciness of that jheri curl funk.

is because of how closer to the Dirty Mind Prince/early Time records they sounded, rather than RFTW coming right out of that "1999" and later vibe with all the Linn Drum usage.I think RTFW's first album was a classic (at least in the vein of this post, a "hood classic") and they certainly got much more popular based of "Oh Sheila" and other songs but I felt like at the same time they were doing the same thing throughout the album.

Now Dreamboy's second album, except those slow jams, they DEFINITELY sounded like a cheap RFTW

in a way bands like them (and the early Deele, LOL) filled that void of "Prince"-like jams that was opened when he started to become more psychedelic with his

It was funny because prince had pretty much moved away from that style by the time everyone else was doing it ... and I mean EVERYONE. When you have Al Jarreau dropping songs like Sticky Wicket you know it's pervasive.

* Stevie Wonder - My Eyes Don't Cry No More (remix)...a staple in the hustle scene. i'm sure that shit was a flop every where else. because this song wasn't that big for Motown, the pressing wasn't that huge. therefore, the laws of supply and demand made this a highly sought after piece of vinyl. this boy was running $60 and up at record stores whenever you DID happen to see it at one. if it wasn't for the bootleg, a LOT of DJs (including myself) would have been assed out. you can't do no family function/wedding reception/etc. around here without it. niggas will run you up out that bitch.

* Koffee Brown - After Party. yeah, it was a hit nationally, but this shit is STILL getting a little bit of airplay and a LOT of burn in the ballroom sets. there are several songs like this, in fact...

+ Jahiem - Just In Case
+ Aaliyah - Rock The Boat
+ Goapele - Closer

At least off that first album. "The Humpty Dance" was pretty huge, from what I remember. They sold records, got on one of the biggest hip-hop tours to that date, got mainstream MTV love, etc.

Probably becuase their sound wasn't particularly "regional," and they had the party vibe thing going for them.

Back then Ruthless Records had MONEY. Remeber they had Bone Thugs signed to the label, which was one of the biggest acts in the nation.

I could see the reaction to "Black Superman" because I was actually out there when it dropped. I was still in high school for "Livin' Like hustlers."

Co-sign on that being a great album though. There used to be heated discussions of whether that or AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted was a better album. I always argued for Cube, but I could see where other cats were coming from.

132771, neither did i... its unreleased
Posted by steg1, Fri Feb-05-10 02:56 PM
but i was/am such a Belly stan , I too always loved that song/scene ...

ffwd a few years later, somewhere between Alpine Valley and Deer Creek on Phish tour, me and friend were trying to find a local FMstation, and on some bumble eff college radio show they were playing some early Twista jawn so we left it on...

next dude was like Ima keep it goin w a track from Crucial Conflict "Swell Up" , unreleased but we all will remember from the Method Man scene in Belly, etc...

me and my boy drivin (also a yt belly stan) were like wtf and proceeded to nearly drive off the road whylin.

132772, How about cross-hood classics?
Posted by -DJ R-Tistic-, Fri Feb-05-10 03:08 PM
Those that were bigger in another area than in the area it came from. L.A. has a few songs now that are bigger here than in the hometown, such as "I eat da pussy" which is a straight Jerkin song but came from NY.

213 "Joystick" was MAJOR in South Florida, and had a dance to it...it got a lil play here in L.A., but only in the Black clubs.
