but i didn't see it as a pop record then, and i don't now. when i think of a pop album for prince, for me it starts with "purple rain".
"1999" to me was just another progression of prince in him using new wave, a little punk and rock in his funk like the previous two albums, but with a different twist.
i would say some of the hits became pop, but not the album overall.
"thriller" was a pop album. i knew that then. but it was a great album just the same.
