2 Stars (out of 5)

Complaining that The Roots are too cynical is kind of like wishing Delta blues singers would cheer up once in a while. But when you sound as tired and anemic as they do on their endlessly grey eighth studio album (case in point: the Afrobeat-inflected but lyrically predictable “I Will Not Apologize”), you realize that maybe they’re not the canary in the coal mine so much as the paranoid depressive who gets off on telling you how the government controls people through SSRIs. Maybe the problem lies in the chorus to yet another dirge, “The Show,” about what keeps them on the road 300 days a year: “The show, the show / it must go on / I can’t stop / I won’t stop.” Old-school reference, or a cry for help?
