I was hoping someone would bring this up. A producer is not an arranged. Q is both. As a producer you can say this needs strings but you do not have to write the charts yourself. He shaped the sound. Yes there was HDH, Spector,Wilson and others who did it all but then you had Richard Perry, Teo Macero, Rick Rubin and Eno who don't.

The role of the modern producer has changed. The pop producer writes and arranges the song. The rap producer supplies the beat. Kanye has rarely produced non rap tracks such as Timbaland or The Neptunes so it is comparing apples and oranges. Just as Q really hasn't done rap.

As another post suggests, Q sounds bitter and there is no reason for it. Even if you exclude his work with M.J. he is a legend. No he does not get enough credit for his work with M.J. just as George Martin doesn't with The Beatles. That is just the public perception for those of us who know about music, we know what time it is.
