92128, Windows 2000 installed and now external is not recognized.

My mother's computer had XP but the hard drive was super small. She has a 160 gig external and to make the computer run smoother I installed 2000. Once I did that the external no longer showed up. What am I doing wrong here. Help a brother out people. I need this external to show up.
