89629, I'm retiring from torrents Posted by stead21, Sun Jan-07-07 03:26 AM
I'm tired of this uploading bullshit, my boy was telling me about these newsgroups. I'm about to take that option.

89630, there are TONS of free torrent sites that dont require upload ratios... Posted by HighVoltage, Sun Jan-07-07 04:19 AM

89632, yeah but those sites aren't safe Posted by Nabs, Sun Jan-07-07 04:51 AM

dunno what sites you are on...

89640, ... Posted by Samurai_Shampoo, Sun Jan-07-07 07:04 AM
most torrent sites will tell you how many people have downloaded a file. it may even have a spot for comments. generally speaking, if a large # of people have dl'd the torrent and it's still up, it's legit. if there are comments, there may be one that says it's not what you're looking for.
last, you just need to be smart about what you open (just like with email attachments). if you dl'd an application or game, run it thru your antivirus. most tv shows and movies will be standard mpg or avi, so they're ok.

>look at the RIAA going after grandmas and shit, 'taint goin >nowhere
That's another thing, I know the RIAA is making a swoop on these torrent sites now as well. I have a couple of really great torrent sites, but like I said, the really good ones, you have to upload. My dude was telling that I have to pay loot to check out these news bins sites, but I really don't care at this point. Plus I have vonage, and when I'm uploading, I can't use my phone.

89639, Don't you have to pay to use newsgroups? Posted by The_Orange_Ninja_Turtle, Sun Jan-07-07 06:59 AM
I dunno if that's worth it if so.
|
89643, yeah it is worth it Posted by Nabs, Sun Jan-07-07 09:47 AM
can't knock it till you try it. there's a good chance your isp gives you SOME newsgroup service (comcast has a 2gb a month limit... etc). look into it

89645, the OiNK ratio requirement is like 0.25... and you get the first 5gb free Posted by The Damaja, Sun Jan-07-07 11:12 AM
5gb is like 50 albums, and by the time you have that much, you'll have MORE than enough seeded torrents to meet the 0.25 ratio requirement even AS you're downloading stuff.
honestly i don't even notice the upload requirements... it's had zero impact on me... except i need to switch azureus off before i play xbox live or it will be too laggy. OiNK torrents download so fast that you'll probably end up uploading more than you d/led just because you forgot to quit the program
|
90321, you need an account though to use it Posted by B.WilkZ, Wed Jan-10-07 11:34 AM
you got one for me to come be a member and contribute?

90455, k, riddle me this then Posted by dgonsh, Wed Jan-10-07 07:30 PM
please help with this problem i have
a. im on an imac (i dont know if this is relevent, but...) b. i have an oink account c. i use azureus to dl d. when i dl, the torrents usually finish very very quickly e. however, the most they ever upload is 200k-1 or 2 megs. at the most!!!
so what am i doing wrong. i leave that shit open for days and yet nothing uploads. most of the torrents get 0 uploads, and the ones that do, like i said get very little uploaded.
this is really hurting my share ratio hard. and im more than happy to seed! when i use bits on wheels for other sites (its blocked by oink) i sometimes uploads gigs at a time.
anyone know why this would be?

90667, hmm Posted by The Damaja, Thu Jan-11-07 09:35 PM
well first thing to do is log in to OiNK click on your username at the top left of the page make sure Azureus is running you will see a list of the torrents you are seeding and the far right column will tell you if the torrent is 'clever' or not if they're not 'clever' that means most users can't connect to you you need to go into your router setup pages and find the port forwarding setting or if you're not behind a router, look in the Network system preferences make sure port 15000 (or whatever it's set to in Azureus) is open/forwarded to your comp
if that's already done then maybe your ISP is blocking bittorrent. in which case change the port or somthing
i get the same problem you do sometimes i think it's related to who else is using the connection like maybe they're using a program that's using Azureus's ports actually it's happenign now and i don't know why
hmm maybe my ISP has caught on maybe i've been uploading too much personally maybe i just need to reset the router

89683, I use newsgroups most of the time Posted by champion, Sun Jan-07-07 05:01 PM
Mostly because the speeds I get are 1, consistent and 2, almost always faster than what I get from even the best-seeded torrents.
My ISP at home (Verizon) does offer usenet access, so check out if yours does before you pay. At school I use Newshosting.com which has been decent, and I use newzbin for NZBs (you pay for this too but it is really cheap, like 0.50/week and the selection is great--you should know that you see more posts when you are a member than when you're not logged in to the site if you're checking it out before you pay). tvnzb.com is also good for tv shows, and is free.

89694, i dont pay for nzbs. binsearch.info is your friend! Posted by Nabs, Sun Jan-07-07 06:25 PM
nzbsrus.com too. but binsearch is king.
i use the unlimited newshosting (15 a m) and grabit as my newsgroup client (shemes.com)

nabs,
i'm bout to mess with giganews.

89830, RE: i dont pay for nzbs. binsearch.info is your friend! Posted by bearfield, Mon Jan-08-07 01:40 PM
i wasn't very impressed with giganews. there are better deals out there
i'm using usenet-news right now and i'm very pleased with the service. block accounts (like $30 for 100 gb with no expiration), great speeds, and they have a search function on the site

90406, unlimited service is a must Posted by Nabs, Wed Jan-10-07 05:01 PM
i can use 100 gb in a month
of course i can't speak on your situation, since you may not need that much space... so that deal would probably be ideal.

I just subcribed to Giganews, this mess is overwhelming. I'm still not sure why you need newzbins or binsearch. NABS, school me on that.

90655, RE: unlimited service is a must Posted by stead21, Thu Jan-11-07 08:31 PM
NABS,
You right man, that binsearch is tight, I also subscribed to newzbins as well. My boy taught me how to set everything up.

>i 'member the days before ircspy, when you literally just >went thru thousands of fserve's to find shit
oh man,
you took me back on that f serves. I remember when we would go through AOL and IRC, all the files would go to your email addy.
|
90421, i never had the email addy thing Posted by Samurai_Shampoo, Wed Jan-10-07 05:48 PM
i was on there '99 - '00 first year in college with a T-whatever line, downloading EVERYTHING lol CD-R's were expensive back then too, $40 for a 50-spindle
the worst was when that your download didn't finish, then you had an incomplete file and you gotta find that one person again to resume it..
