79037, Can somebody school me on how to use OiNK properly. Posted by NAPO, Fri Oct-13-06 01:10 AM
i just got an invite from a generous fellow OKP. i read the faq, but it left me with more questions than answers. i dont wanna mess up the rep of the invitee and i wanna stay a good user in the oink community, so somebody help me out.
some questions: 1. do you have to upload albums that are have not been previously uploaded?
2.do you have to upload something in the first 14 days or get kicked off?
3.how exactly do you upload. do i just take a folder, make a torrent and then kick upload? is there certain information you have to have.
aight ya'll have a nice day!!

79040, SEED CONSTANTLY. Do more seeding than leeching. Posted by jetblack, Fri Oct-13-06 01:51 AM
you should be seeding Justin Timberlake, Fergie and XTina.
if it's Pop.
Seed IT!

79043, Yup -- uploading is overrated Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-13-06 02:14 AM
Odds are you have a few CDs in your collection that would be nice additions (well, hopefully), but for the most part build your ratio on seeding.
I have something like 10 uploads, mainly instrumental versions of albums or albums independents of discographies (which worked before they eliminated discographies) or small release stuff I got with a magazine or something. Aside from that I have 40 GBs uploaded off SEEDING. Find something popular, download the torrent, and then leave your torrent open long enough to get your ratio up.
Most of my upload has been built off albums I never even listened to, popular indie releases or pop albums that hit. Also, popular programs aren't bad, either. The Microsoft Office suite might seem daunting at 642 GBs, but I've uploaded 1.5 GBs off it in like a month now of sporadiuc use of my torrent program.
So yeah, don't sweat the uploads too much, although it's not a bad idea to take a chance on one if you see that it's not up there, the rest of the time just seed.

nope. there are a lot of duplicate uploads out there. some new releases are being uploaded 3 or 4 times by different ppl with different bitrate encodes (flac, 192, 320, etc.)
>2.do you have to upload something in the first 14 days or get >kicked off?
again, no. it really helps when you first get on go thru the requests page. you should be able find a cd you own that someone wants. if you can rip it in .flac (http://flac.sourceforge.net/), all the better. none of that is really necessary tho. if you jump on a release that's going to be very popular soon after it's uploaded, you'll seed enough to establish a good ratio
my offer to help you out still stands. just pick a random cd you have, rip it in flac, upload it, and pm me in oink (username: bearfield) with a link to the torrent. i'll be more than happy to download it and get your ratio up. and that offer stands for any okp on oink who needs to get their ratio up
also, seed FOREVER. i don't delete torrents i've downloaded until they've seeded up to a 1.5 ratio, no matter how long it takes
>3.how exactly do you upload. do i just take a folder, make a >torrent and then kick upload? is there certain information you >have to have.
that's pretty much the gist of it. it depends on what you create the torrent with. check out http://jiggafellz.isa-geek.net/ for torrent creation tips

79072, Yup -- I usually never take torrents out until they're at least 1.0 Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-13-06 11:41 AM
>also, seed FOREVER. i don't delete torrents i've downloaded >until they've seeded up to a 1.5 ratio, no matter how long it >takes
And I usually have 25-30 seeding in my uTorrent whenever it's open. After long enough, pretty much ALL of them end up with a good, positive ratio.

79081, what I did........ Posted by acedro, Fri Oct-13-06 01:56 PM
I put together a zip file that included software w/codes and the file size was about 2GB.
Took me 2 days to get a good ratio.
If you can get just one person to grab a 2GB file from you, you should be good to d/l for a while and keep a decent ratio, as long as you seed.

79156, that might have been illegal Posted by Warp and Woof, Sat Oct-14-06 12:27 PM
they don't allow for self compiled software packages. It should either be a standalone program, or a manufacturer bundle (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite).
I don't know what your zip file contains (I don't recall if they even allow zip files instead of just folders), but you might want to check it out before someone decides to report it.

well, I've seen others do it which is why I decided to.
it was a while ago, so no worries.

79089, oink is wak Posted by HighVoltage, Fri Oct-13-06 03:19 PM
they ask you to seed more than 95% of what other torrent sites ask of you.
ill stick to albumbase.

79105, No they don't. Posted by bignick, Fri Oct-13-06 05:02 PM
>they ask you to seed more than 95% of what other torrent >sites ask of you.
Keeping a 0.5 ratio is not too much to ask.
|
79133, yes it is. Posted by HighVoltage, Sat Oct-14-06 01:02 AM
tons of sites dont ask for ratios at all.
|
79139, and most of those sites suck. Posted by Nopayne, Sat Oct-14-06 03:02 AM

79135, look in the requests Posted by Doc Maestro, Sat Oct-14-06 01:13 AM
upload higher quality versions of albums already on the tracker (if there's a 192 or 224 or 256, upload a 320 Kb/s one)
if there's no lossless one, rip it in FLAC (and do it right)
search for artists you think would be popular and see what's on there or not
it helps to actually own a considerable amount of actual CDs so you can up those if they're not on the tracker already

79157, there are other torrent sites out there NO SHARE RATIO... Posted by jetblack, Sat Oct-14-06 12:32 PM

79158, Most of this is in the rules section of OiNK Posted by Warp and Woof, Sat Oct-14-06 12:35 PM
>i just got an invite from a generous fellow OKP. i read the >faq, but it left me with more questions than answers. i dont >wanna mess up the rep of the invitee and i wanna stay a good >user in the oink community, so somebody help me out.
Be sure to read the rules ( http://oink.me.uk/rules.php ), as well as to check some of the tutorial section posts in the OiNK forums. Which is a very helpful place by the way, faster than Okp in most cases, and definately more accurate on the answers.
>some questions: >1. do you have to upload albums that are have not been >previously uploaded?
You can only upload an album if it has a higher bitrate than the available copy, or if it is in a different format.
>2.do you have to upload something in the first 14 days or get >kicked off?
As far as I know, you only have to maintain their minimum ratio.
>3.how exactly do you upload. do i just take a folder, make a >torrent and then kick upload? is there certain information you >have to have.

79408, okay. so i got my invite, but... Posted by WhiteNotion, Tue Oct-17-06 04:46 PM
i use a mac. i used to use transmission, but since it doesn't work with oink, i got bittorrent. at first i tried azureus, but that made absolutely no sense to me, so i went with bittorrent. unfortunately, now i can download, but not seed. i know it's not a problem with bittorrent, since i can seed torrents from other sites. is there something special i have to do to seed torrents from oink? i'm really not trying to eff up this person who sent me the invite. is my only option to upload?
