70865, im going to upgrade my desktop (help please) Posted by haji rana pinya, Fri Jul-21-06 06:19 PM
its a compaq presario 6000
couple years old
pentium 4 cpu 2.0 ghz 256 ram
40 gig hard drive and a while back i put in an additional 80 gig harddrive
both are close to full but i intend on getting an external drive and dumping the memory of the desktop to it, then running dumb virus scans on it before proceeding
it moves real slow right now
im going to be using it mostly for making music so i know im going to want to get the ram to 1.0 (or better) hopefully
any problems you can foresee with this? anything else i should consider? suggested places to get ram? should i take it somewhere or can i just do it myself?
im obviously trying to save money cuz i could just go out and buy a new tower if this is going to be either too frustrating or expensive
thanks!

70866, I will say this: I'm starting to doubt if building your own is cheaper. Posted by Triptych, Fri Jul-21-06 06:37 PM
It's nice to know how everything works, and of course you can buy stuff that just isn't offered by major manufacturers. But it ain't cheap buying everything seperately.
Guess the bulk savings large manufacturers get have eclipsed the savings you'd get from doing your own labor.

70868, I think it depends on whether you're doing a complete build or not. Posted by Nopayne, Fri Jul-21-06 06:55 PM
If you can salvage some parts you'll be saving cash. Also, you can avoid paying that extra cost for yet another copy of Windows. =========================================== -Me

70867, i think that computer is worth upgrading Posted by sunchild, Fri Jul-21-06 06:43 PM
adding ram should be fairly simple, and is something you can do yourself.
http://www.crucial.com/ <<<<<<<Ram spot
also try newegg.com
if i were you i would just do a fresh reinstall of the os, while im at it.

70898, fresh restall completely wipes the memory? Posted by haji rana pinya, Sat Jul-22-06 08:34 AM
meaning i would have to back up and save all files before doing that?
BUT any viruses or worms that may be on the pc will be gone?
that might be a move

70899, nope. Posted by Samurai_Shampoo, Sat Jul-22-06 09:06 AM
it can, but during the install you have the option of formatting (erasing everything) or leaving it intact. the viruses are still on your computer but they're inert.
