February 24, 2006 - Stumbling from the elevator of San Francisco's Clift Hotel, I was still rubbing the sleep from my eyes, yet couldn't be more alert. After a short trek down a purple hallway lined with massive circular mirrors, IGNPC's Dan Adams and I were greeted by Bethesda's VP of Public Relations and Marketing, Peter Hines. He led us to a sizable suite where we could sit down at one of around 20 23-inch LCD TVs, all displaying the start screen for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Unlike many gaming events, there wasn't pounding techno music or other pretenses that suggested we weren't all present solely to play videogames. The room was dark and quiet with headphones at every station; the perfect way to experience a four-hour play session of Oblivion.

Dan sat down at one of about 10 PC stations, while I made my way over to the Xbox 360 table. After picking up the controller and hitting the start button to begin my journey, I only moved once over the next four hours to get a coffee (aka nectar of life). In case you didn't already know, Oblivion promises to be a titanic single-player only experience for those willing to put in the time. Just running through the main questline alone will take around 20 to 25 hours. Checking out all the superfluous content such as cavernous dungeons, mountainside cottages and completing the various Guild and NPC quests across Cyrodiil will take well over 200 hours, according to Bethesda.

Since the game is so huge, even a four-hour session only barely scratches the surface. It proved to be enough, however, to fully create a character, escape the first dungeon, explore part of the outside world, do some quests, steal a horse, join a Guild and level up. Once out of the initial dungeon, Dan and I tried to head in different directions and involve ourselves in different communities to present the most comprehensive play summaries possible. After reading through here, be sure to head over to Dan's preview for more detail as well as specifics on how the PC version played. Since this preview is not short, you may just want to load up the new interview and gameplay footage to accompany your reading.

Oblivion begins with a character creation screen. I chose to play as a male Imperial, a race that closely resembles humans. Oblivion gives you a surprising amount of options for adjusting facial appearance, providing sliders for manipulating cheek angle, forehead slope, eye size and separation as well as hair style and color. By the time I was done, my character looked suspiciously like Alan Rickman's Snape from Harry Potter.

The game started me in a dungeon you've all probably seen by now, with its hanging chains and insult-spewing prisoner across the hall. The emperor Uriel Septim wanted to escape the castle through a hidden alcove in my cell. On his way by, he recognized me as someone with a higher purpose and allowed me to follow him into a network of stone tunnels and grimy warrens called the Imperial Sewers. This area serves as a training ground, as I faced off against easy foes like rats, weakling goblins and slow moving zombies. On my way through I picked up a bow and arrow, mortar and pestle, a two-handed warhammer, upgraded leather armor, a few shields and a ton of rat meat.

I was given a brief tutorial of stealth mode, which is activated by clicking down on L3 (left joystick) and puts up an eye icon in the center of the screen. As long as the icon remained translucent, I was hidden. There's a cavern area in the Imperial Sewers where a few goblins mull around campfires. I snuck up behind one while stealthed, readied my bow and arrow and launched a sharp projectile at the back of his head. Upon impact, a message popped up at the top of the screen indicating I'd just done double damage with the sneak attack. The goblin tried to charge me afterwards, but I was able to kill him by quick-switching to my two-handed warhammer and crushing his nose.

The quick-switch weapon and spell feature is extremely useful for eliminating baddies in Oblivion. When I accessed my menu to equip weapons, armor, items and spells, I was able to press Y over a highlighted item to bring up an eight-slot radial menu. The slots correspond to the eight directions on the D-Pad. Pressing a direction on the D-Pad equips that item to the corresponding slot. This way, I was able to input my most frequently used spells and weapon sets for quick access while fighting.

Since weapon swings and spell casts are initiated with different buttons, Right Trigger (RT) and Right Bumper (RB), respectively, this allowed for highly effective combat techniques. For instance, I could hit RT to swing the warhammer, hit RB right after to launch a fireball, switch over to my iron longsword and shield combo for added defense and faster attack speed, switch to a healing spell to regain health, then back to the hammer for a powerful finishing blow. If I'd bothered, I could have also mapped healing potions and spell scrolls for added help in battle.

Weapon swings come in two varieties, weak and strong. Tap RT for a quick, weak attack. Hold RT for a stronger but more drawn out attack. Holding RT also charged my character forward a few steps, so it's ideal for kicking off a fight. While swinging my weapon I had to take into account my fatigue level, which ticked away with every swing, and regenerated when standing still or walking slowly. The difference between cutting through the air with a one-handed longsword versus the warhammer was extremely noticeable, with the warhammer taking a painful amount of time to wind up. When not swinging your weapon, I had to actually tap Left Trigger (LT) to put up my shield or weapon to block. It didn't happen automatically.

Moving on from the downed goblin, I set my sights on a magic caster standing by a larger fire in the cavern. Before doing anything, I opened my inventory and poisoned my sword with a potion I was carrying. I snuck an arrow into the back of the caster's head only to realize that a goblin archer had been standing next to him the whole time. The ensuing battle was frantic, especially since the caster seemed to be having a great time launching lightning bolts at me.

Switching to my shield and longsword, I pursued the archer first. I took a few arrows, but managed to cut him down after he fled from my charge. Circling around to the caster, I closed the distance between us while launching fireballs to lessen his health. Coincidentally, enemy health can be seen during combat as an arc curved around the targeting reticule at the center of the screen. As my fireballs landed, his arc shortened enough until I was able to render his ugly face dead with a few swings.

Plundering the corpses for loot turned up a number of valuables including the caster's staff, called a goblin shaman staff. It was a magic item, denoted by a blue circle next to its inventory icon, and still had some charge left. In fact, it had a charge of 78 out of 150, with eight uses left. I'd also picked up something called a soul gem which could be used to recharge magic items. Using the gem brought up a menu of all my magic items. Having only one, the staff was the sole item listed. The gem didn't recharge the staff all the way, but did allow me to get a few more uses out of it. Eventually, more powerful stones can be found that recharge your items all the way, even a few that recharge every magic item in your inventory. Repair hammers, which I found a few of, work in much the same way, allowing you to mend weapons and armor that have been beaten up in combat.

When equipped, the staff appeared as a long wooden stick with a goblin's bloody head on the end of it. While checking out my character model holding the staff on the menu screen, I happened to notice that a few of the archer's arrows were still sticking out of me. These went away after a time, but it was interesting to note that when I got hit by arrows, some of them were actually added to my inventory. Not all of them, however, since, according to Bethesda, some are assumed to be broken. Still, for a character with a heavy emphasis on archery, that's a useful yet counterintuitive feature if you ever run out of arrows in a tough spot.

Though the battle was over, one more problem cropped up as I went to move further into the sewers: I was encumbered. Basically, this means I'm carrying too much equipment to move. The only solution is to toss the most useless, heaviest items in my inventory. Trust me, throughout the course of Oblivion you're going to be picking up a lot of junk. For instance, I tossed away a human ribcage, a skull, a shield and some armor that were duplicates of what I was already using so I could move again. I also had a multitude of potions and alchemy reagents like flowers and plants, which, if I wanted to, could mix together to form more powerful items.

Soon after I met up with Uriel again, who had taken another path through the catacombs. He kept getting attacked by would-be assassins, and he instructed me to follow him and his guard as they attempted to flee the city. I eventually wound up in a stone walled room with Uriel as his guards battled enemies outside. He gave me his Amulet of Kings and instructed me to pass it along to Jauffre, who could be found at Weynon Priory outside the city of Chorrol. Apparently it was Jauffre who would know more about the location of the emperor's son; the one destined to sit on the throne. It was at this point I was able to pick a birth sign. Though there were many options, I chose the Warrior, which gave me 10 bonus points to my strength and endurance statistics.

Eventually the guards came back in, and I was then asked to pick my class. There were even more choices here, ranging from Warrior and Bard to Witch Hunter and Battlemage. I was also able to completely custom build my own class. When I chose that option, the game asked three questions. First, I had to choose between concentrating on combat, magic or stealth. Second, I could pick two primary attributes, either speed, personality, luck, willpower, agility, endurance, intelligence or strength, which would give me another bonus. Next, I had to pick seven major skills, be it destruction magic, heavy armor, blades or numerous others which would give me even more bonuses. Lastly, I got to enter a custom name for my class, for which I put Groindestroyer. It wasn't a very good name. In the end, I just went with the Barbarian class for simplicity's sake. A Barbarian, as you might expect, is focused on combat. My favored attributes were strength and speed, and my major skills were armorer, athletics, blade, block, blunt, hand to hand and light armor. All in all, it just means I can totally destroy stuff.

With my character totally customized and my first quest handed to me, I hacked through the remaining rats and zombies in the murky sewers. As I approached the exit grate to the outside world, the game prompted me with a list of all the decisions I'd made so far. I agreed with them, so I continued on. However, you're able to change any of your decisions regarding character customization up to this point if you wish.

Finally free of the darkness, I found myself on a grassy slope looking out over a rippling body of water flanked by misty mountains. For escaping the sewers, I earned my first Oblivion Achievement, of which there are many. The draw distance was truly impressive. However, the extremely low resolution textures that blanketed the far-off mountains caused me to wince. It can be understood that for the sake of framerate, high resolution textures can't be loaded everywhere. Still, the far off tracts of land and hill didn't look very good. That being said, the textures surrounding my character, the various sizes of trees closer to the water and the small bushes and vegetation around me were great. The sky, too, was packed with detail. I'd apparently emerged right before dusk, as stars were starting to come out all over the orange-blue sky and a huge, red moon loomed on the horizon behind banks of wispy cloud.

It was at this point I started playing around with Oblivion's third-person perspective. Clicking down on the right stick (R3) pulls the camera back behind your character letting you see all the armor and weapons you've equipped. Unfortunately, the controls felt slippery while in this mode and overly sensitive, causing my character to often head in directions I hadn't intended. Hopefully this is an issue that gets worked out before the title releases.

Just over the river were a few bandits who attacked me on sight. After forcefully plowing my sword into them, I managed to net a two-handed claymore from their camp. It was at this point I remembered my time with the game was limited, so I brought up my map, found Weynon Priory and fast-traveled there. The fast-traveling system is an extremely welcome convenience after the ridiculous amount of plodding around characters had to do in Morrowind. Some locations in Oblivion, mostly major towns, are immediately accessible by fast-travel. Other, more remote locations, like cottages or farms, required that I actually walk up to them in the game world before a fast-traveling option would be available.

Within seconds, I was standing before the Priory, a stately stone building, and found Jauffre not far inside. After handing over the Amulet, he told me I needed to go out to Kvetch in search of Martin, the emperor's son. A mere matter of seconds later, I'd fast-traveled over to Kvetch. Of course, finding Martin wasn't as easy as it seemed. My arrival in town followed the appearance of an Oblivion Gate, and Martin was trapped near it. Making my way through the makeshift camp the town's survivors had built, I made my way up a hill towards the actual walled city of Kvetch.

As I climbed, the sky grew dark, thunder rumbled above and eventually a light rain began to fall. I reached the summit to find a massive fiery gate planted in front of Kvetch's main entrance. A nearby guard informed me how the gate had suddenly appeared and Daedra, demons from the Oblivion dimension, had poured out and ravaged the town. Looking at the ruined stone walls and fires behind the gate, it was clear the Daedra weren't the kindest of creatures. The gate itself was a graphical treat, with torrents of fire swirling between two massive stone columns. Emanating from the angry portal were waves of heat distortion as well as more Daedra. Crap! The guards and I managed to take down the few that spilled out, and afterwards I offered my help in defending Kvetch. Doing this involved heading into the Oblivion portal and finding a way to shut it.

However, I decided to locate Martin first. Finding myself in a ruined courtyard before a sprawling Gothic cathedral, I was jumped by four more Daedra that were damn difficult to defeat. I managed to do it, though, thanks to my claymore and healing spell combo. The church itself, called the Chapel of Akatosh, featured some great graphical effects, particularly the faint glow behind the massive stained glass windows and the architecture of the vaulted ceilings and stone buttresses. I found Martin inside as well.

My task was to bring him back to Jauffre in order to begin work on thwarting Dagon, the Prince of Destruction. However, Martin didn't want to leave the people he'd rescued and brought to the cathedral. At least, not until the Oblivion Gate was closed. Unfortunately, heading into the portal was forbidden by Bethesda, so my experience with Oblivion's main questline ended here.

That doesn't mean the overall experience ended. After Kvetch, I fast traveled west to a town called Anvil. Just outside the town was a stable, and in the stable were a few white horses. Though there are several types available in Oblivion, horses are generally very expensive. This particular white horse cost 4,000 gold, which I definitely didn't have. Instead of paying, I just stole it.

After riding it around for a while, I can definitely say horses give you a significant speed boost and are much more fun to use than your feet. They are susceptible to fall damage and enemy weapons, however. Should they die, you have to buy a new one. Also, if you actually own one, they will go along with you when you fast travel. If they're stolen, they'll simply walk back to the stable when you get off.

I dismounted and was greeted with a dialogue screen suggesting I take a nap. After a solid eight hours of sleep, I discovered I'd leveled up. Leveling in Oblivion isn't something based on experience points, but rather on skill improvement through use. The more you jump and run, the more your acrobatic and athletic skills increase. The more you swing swords, the better your blades, the more you sneak, the more stealthy you become. Once a certain amount of skills are increased by a specific number of points, you level up. Leveling enables you to increase some of your attributes, making you more powerful, able to carry more, able to cast more spells, or myriad other improvements depending on where you allocate your points. I was able to choose three attributes: speed (+4), endurance (+2) and strength (+2). The numbers in parentheses represent bonuses based on my previous character customization decisions.

I then headed into Anvil, a city of decent size with stone buildings that seemed to mix stark Grecian columnar designs with more ornate bits of architecture. I found the Fighters Guild not too far inside the walls, and signed up immediately. Some guy named Azzan declared me an Associate, and I took on my first quest assignment. It seemed simple enough: find Arvena Thelas in Anvil and take care of her rat problem. Pretty standard rat kill quest, I thought.

Back on Anvil's cobblestone streets, I checked the compass in the bottom center of my screen to figure out what direction Arvena's house was. In Oblivion, the location of whatever quest you've selected as active in the journal is marked on your map. It's also marked on your compass, and even color coded. A red arrow on your compass means the objective is indoors. In order to reach them, you'll need to first enter a building. If it's green, however, you'll know the target is outside. This should prove immensely helpful in larger cities and crowded forests.

Arvena's house wasn't far from the Guild. I found her upstairs, crying about her rats. Specifically, she was crying about how her beloved rats were being mauled by some creature in the basement. In the basement, I found Arvena's rats were being carved up by a gigantic mountain lion, who I promptly dispatched with my still-useful claymore. Arvena then tasked me with eliminating the source of the lions. I had to track down a hunter named Pinarus Inventius, who led me a little way outside the city. There, we battled against a pack of mountain lions, and were decidedly victorious. But the questline wasn't over.

Upon returning to Arvena's house to tell her the threat was eliminated, I found yet another mountain lion in her basement. After slaughtering it, Arvena told me she'd seen a neighbor, Quill-Weave, snooping around her house at night. I headed back to the streets and found the intrepid lurker. I tailed her until dark, and in the process witnessed Quill-Weave engage in several random NPC conversations, evidence of Oblivion's Radiant AI system at work. In the course of a couple hours of Oblivion game time (a few minutes in the real world), she managed to hit on a town guard and I overheard another conversation trashing Arvena for having rats in her basement. Eventually Quill-Weave snuck behind Arvena's house, placing a piece of meat near an entrance to the basement.

When I approached her, Quill-Weave explained she had no intention of luring mountain lions in, but rather thought the meat would lure the rats out. However, she offered me a bonus to my acrobatics skill if I kept it quiet. When I returned to tell Arvena I'd solved the problem, I neglected to mention Quill-Weave and got a cash reward anyway. Upon returning to the Fighters Guild, I was promoted to Apprentice, and also told by Bethesda I needed to leave.

To try and sum up this mess of a hands-on, the Xbox 360 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is looking very good. Its framerate did tend to slow down a little when characters crowded onscreen, but that didn't make it any less playable. The game enters a loading screen when moving through doors, and in open areas will take brief pauses to load new textures when traveling across the countryside. Across all instances of loading, they were consistently swift. The only disappointing features I saw were the wonky third-person controls and ultra low-resolution textures that blanketed distant objects. Other than that, shadows, character detail, weapon models, water effects and animations all looked excellent. The PC version looked slightly sharper and ran at a better clip than the Xbox 360, but Dan and I agreed both looked strikingly similar. Clearly, there's a ridiculous amount of options available to players, way too many to fully describe in this preview. While I was only able to get four hours of play, I definitely got hooked. Writing this preview made the urge to play even worse.

Contrary to rumors flying around, Bethesda has not made an announcement about the official release date. However, they are promising the date soon, as Peter Hines states in our new Oblivion interview you'll find in the media section below. Be sure to check out the new gameplay footage and screens as well. Of course, we'll have the release date as soon as it's available.

Posted by bearfield, Mon Mar-20-06 11:56 AM
but that was mostly due to the (imo) incredibly stupid stamina meter, which i understand they've either gotten rid of or refined. no more sequences that go something like:

you: *spots foe*
you: *swings once at foe and misses*
you: *stamina is depleted*
you: *can't do anything else, not even run away*
foe: *0wnz you*
you: *dies while waiting for stamina to recharge*

good looking out on the comp usa deal
58420, apparently, the combat is more "twitch" now

so if you hit someone, you actually do hit someone, and if you dodge...you actually dodge.

Which is a good thing imo. Instead of smacking someone clean in the face, but the hidden dice roll says you aren't accurate enough, so it counts as a miss, lol

58632, this game is crazy
Posted by bearfield, Tue Mar-21-06 07:33 PM
i made my character a dark elf with the intent of being a sneaky, murderous, theiving, magic-wielding assassin. i customized my class to best suit my unscrupulous nature

after i exited the 1st dungeon, i made my way to the imperial city, got an inn and stayed until nightfall. i then proceeded to rob the jewelry store undetected and hightailed it out of town to go exploring. i wandered around for a minute, just taking in the absolute vastness and beauty of this game

i eventually came upon a lone farm in the middle of nowhere and decided to sneak in and steal some shit. i successfully picked the lock to the house and entered to find the owner sound asleep. i snuck over to him and attempted to steal his weapon so i'd have an easier time dealing with him should he wake up. my pickpocket attempt failed and he woke up in a rage, attacking me immediately. a couple of flare spells later, he's dead a message flashed on the screen: "unknown forces have witnessed this act" or something to that effect. i ransack the house, but nothing of value was to be found (lousy farmers (c) homer)

i decide to go back to the imperial city to sell my ill-gotten jewelry at one of the less reputable shops in town and made a killing. it was then off to the tavern to get drunk and insult and annoy the other patrons. after ruining everyone's night, i decide to retire to the inn to rest. when i wake up, there's a mysterious man standing by my bed who tells me that his superior has witnessed my vile act of murder and wishes for me to join the clan. my test: find an inn owner and dispose of him. he even gave me a shiny new blade with which to complete the task

all this within 2 hours of starting the game (the 1st dungeon took up about half that time) and i haven't even started any quests
58653, that's what i loved about morrowwind.

this game is HUGE. like indescribably massive. there are literally tens of thousands of things to do and see in this game. this is literally the biggest game ever

it looks beautiful... up close. there's some texture issues with far-off landscapes, but the landscapes ARE in real-time and they are genuinely really far-off. like miles away. all the character and monster models look really good. some of the faces seem 'off' and the lip-sync isn't top notch, but these are minor complaints

combat is a million times better than morrowind. hits actually hit and misses actually miss. it feels a lot tighter and is usually pretty fun and challenging. the fatigue meter has been tweaked and it's a lot better than morrowind. as long as you haven't been doing something to deplete your fatigue meter just before you go into combat, you won't get too tired to fight by just swinging your sword

this is definitely the best and most impressive 360 game i've played and probably the most impressive game i've ever played

first dungeon pissed me off because those damn rats kept killing me...then I realized I had it set on the hardest difficult. Bumped it down to a medium level, and all was well.

Combat feels very well done as opposed to the little I've played of Morrowind. There is actually a bit of skill involved, which appeals to my twitch gamer tastes, heh. I'm currently focusing on stealth and ranged combat (bow and arrow), with a little bit of swordfighting thrown in. Only magic I frequently use is healing, with a fire spell thrown in every so often. Anyone who's used to standard FPS controls should be right at home.

Exiting the initial sewers area for the first time is pretty much breathtaking. Huge rolling hills and mountains and cities can be seen far into the distance (and they're all actual locations you can visit in real-time, not just static backdrops). I found some ruins and entered this area called "Viverin" or something, just out of curiosity. I ended up going through this entire dungeon for like the next hour, and picking up some cool items, fighting enemies along the way. One hit killing folks with an arrow to the back is quite satisfying.

Once I finished that dungeon, it was raining outside, and there were some random bandits outside trying to bring the ruckus. They stepped to me but got beat down (I will beat bandit ass. I don't even care). Finally made it to a city and spent another hour just talking to folks, getting some info, and looking at stuff to buy. I took a rest at an inn and woke up around midnight. I tried to break into someone's house, but my lockpicking skills weren't so great so I couldn't do it. A guard caught me and I had to pay a fine, lol. I wonder if I should've resisted arrest (f-f-fuck the police!).

So maybe tonight I'll actually finish my next objective, lol.

and those bandits were just waiting outside the dungeon? that's ill as fuck. you do all the dirty work and then they stick you for the loot, haha

if you're looking to improve your thieving skills go back to the imperial city, get really friendly with a beggar, ask him about 'grey eyes' and he'll tell you how to join the thief's guild. be careful on that initiation mission tho. i went too fast and it glitched up on me so i had to go back to my last non-auto save which was about 2 hrs playing time :(

It's funny cuz I'm always tempted with moral choices and shit every time I go in someones store. It's a trip cuz when you walk upstairs to the door to their "private room" they come out from behind the counter and start looking up at you.

On some "I wish you would try to break into my room".

I also ended up exiting the Imperial City and finding someone's ship outside. They introduced themselves and then threatened me saying I better not set foot on their ship, lol. Maybe I'll sneak my way in tonight...

were they the '(something that begins with b) bandits/brigands'? i slept on the tavern boat in the waterfront district of imperial city and i woke up out at sea, fighting those bandits/brigands to save the owner of the ship. got a bad-ass backwater blade (drains foe's fatigue with every successful strike) out of it, too

58715, iono if i can explain how robust it is
Posted by bearfield, Wed Mar-22-06 02:08 PM
it's the most open-ended game ever

you've got your main quest, but there's no pressure (or even reminders) to do it. you can just walk from town to town, picking up random quests, joining guilds, breaking into ppl's houses, etc.

there's all kinds of skills to learn and improve. for instance, alchemy. you literally come across items (fauna, mostly) you can alchemize just walking thru the countryside. pick a mushroom cap here and a flower there, throw them in your petsle and mortar, grind that shit up and make a potion of healing or restore fatigue or even a poison

there are burgs and houses scattered all over the countryside an addition to the dozen or so main cities/towns, and each of them has dozens of quests (like slay a monster, or deliver this here, or steal this from that person) for you to do

i've lost count on all the different npc's i've met, all the character models i've seen, all the voices i've heard, all the roads i've been down, etc... it really feels like a living a breathing world. i think that's the best way to describe it: alive

360 has finally hit its stride...thanks for not releasing in Nov!
nowiftheycangetChaosTheoryworking...

Still on the first dungeon (started at 10, went to bed at 11 cuz if I didn't I would still be home playing and possibly out of a job haha. And only then because I got murked). I was grabbing up everything...bones, picks, rat meat, cheese. Alchemy is dope, still getting used to the hotkeys (which is comical since I should know what I put in each circle).

I like the fact that when your torch is out/away, it's pitchblack (hence me getting murked by a lightning throwing goblin). Sneaking is addictive (maybe because the levels were going up crazy fast).

Has anyone noticed that sometimes when you slay someone/thing, the sound is off?

Yall found any ruins? (probably did since I see yall are putting in more time than me)

Why did I just realize that in the first dungeon, you can move the logs so you don't have to kill the goblins yourself?

Why did I just realize that you can make poison and put it on your weapon?

Why is horse riding not as fun?

Why did I waste money bribing a monk and got nothing from it?

Why is it that when I'm on my third lock, I always break the pick?

Why that fool called me a bard? Why did I give him the finger and custom classed?

Why didn't anyone tell me about traps in a dungeon?

Why am I finna join the fighter's guild?

Final Fantasy what?

yo bless me with some recipes. i've been grabbing every plant and fungus i see but my alchemy is only like 10 :(. i "acquired" some quality alchemizing tools (the mortar & pestle and the uhhh... glass thingie... and the other thing...) and i need some stuff to make so i can get my skills up

>Yall found any ruins? (probably did since I see yall are

>>Why did I just realize that you can make poison and put it

>WHAT?! HOW?!

It's so simple you're gonna kick yourself just like I did with the logs...

Bring up all your potions (you can make a poison using rats meat and something else I forgets. Just look for whatever says "damage"), go to the poison, and it should say something like apply. Click on that and whatever weapon you're equipped with, they will ask if you want to put the poison on it. Click yes and shazam. The only problem I found is that it doesn't last long, then again I could be wrong.

basically today i've been going from town to town just robbin motherfuckers blind. i found a new fence to dump my stolen items on in leyawin so i decided to clean the entire town out. so far i've robbed 5 houses, 2 weapons shops, most of the castle, and i pickpocketed some random out-of-towner for his house key and i've just got to find out where his crib is

i also somehow acquired the key to the 'aeylid cask' but i have no idea where that is so if any of y'all come across it, let me know

btw:

lvl 9
73 agl

if i ever find out where to buy the chameleon spell, the whole empire is getting got, lol

i did almost get caught a couple of times. i was working the first floor of one house when i noticed that it was 5:45 am and i had to get out of there as fast as possible. the only problem was i was in a dead-end hallway right next to the kitchen table. it being early morning, the owners of the house naturally came down to have some breakfast (lousy radiant ai!)

at this point i'm pretty much fucked. i can't go anywhere but forwards to the door. unfortunately they're chilling in the foyer chopping it up before they sit down at the table. i sneak behind a large barrel and try to think of how the hell i'm going to get out of here. then i remember that i have a chameleon scroll. i use it just as the husband is about to see me. he pauses and looks in my direction for about 5 seconds, then says "it must have been the wind" and sits down to eat. i'm just barely able to make it out of the house before the spell wears off and rush to the inn to level up and sleep until dark so i can finish robbing them

and i STILL haven't delivered the amulet to jauffre, lol

some advice for any thieves out there: book stores and alchemy shops are the best places to rob. seriously. most alchemy shops will have a gang of potions on display and they only weigh 0.5 uh... feathers... each yet some will sell for up to 120g. same for books. they're really light and can fetch a pretty penny

i finally got the invisibilty spell and as a result i've robbed every castle except the one in the imperial city. there's a LOT of money in castles. jewelry boxes, rare books and potions, and pickpocketing counts and countesses while they're asleep will get you PAID. i pickpocketed 240-something gold from the count of leyawin alone!

right now i'm sitting on 5000+ gold and i'm looking to buy a house in choroll, as that's one of the few cities i haven't cleaned out yet
59155, are you worried about your home being robbed?

there are certain locks that can't be picked. you need a unique key to open them. the door to my house requires a unique key so unless someone pickpockets me (not sure that's possible either) they're not getting in

altho it would be pretty ill if you could get robbed. hell, maybe that's one of the quests: you get robbed and have to get your stuff back
59102, anyone been in any forts yet?
Posted by bearfield, Sat Mar-25-06 11:59 AM
they seem to be necromancer hideouts

i ventured into fort doublecross yesterday and got prety deep into the fort befre i got 0wn3d by some damn high-level necromancer and his zombie buddy (hey, i'm a thief, not a fighter)

there seems to be a decent amount of treasure there and a lot of the necromancers carry expensive (and sometimes magical) weapons and items. just go in prepared to dodge a lot of spells and deal with 3 and 4 enemies (skeletons, zombies, ghosts) at once and you should be ok
59146, ok the forts are bandit/necromancer hideouts
Posted by bearfield, Sat Mar-25-06 06:34 PM

probably alchemy. you can pick up some items that restore health (meats, some plants) and brew them up in your mortar & pestle. actually, alchemy is pretty good for making money early on. you can just wander the countryside harvesting random ingredients, mix them into a potion, and sell them for 100% profit

there's also some healing spells in the restoration school of magic, but imo they are very ineffective for how much magicka they cost

>how do you join the mages guild?

i'm pretty sure you've just got to find one and talk to the right person. ask about 'mages guild' once you're inside and they'll usually tell you who the leader is

As long as no enemies are near by you can use it, so it's kind of like a rest thing between battles. As for during a battle, bearfield's suggestion is probably best. My character has a basic regain health spell but it kinda sucks...I need to cook up some more stuff in the lab, lol

...
59182, lemme talk about the amazing power of invisibility for a sec
Posted by bearfield, Sat Mar-25-06 11:25 PM
i just completed a quest where i was sent to an isolated island to find some chick's husband. turns out the island is home to a fort and the fort is used on some hunt dudes for sport tip. i'm locked in this fort with hunters armed to the teeth looking to kill me. things aren't looking good

so i decided to abuse the 'shadow self' (invisiblity for 30 sec, goes away when action {attack, open door/lock, etc.} is taken, illusion school) spell since i'm definitely at unfair odds here. and boy did it ever work. most 'fights' went something like:

me: *casts 'shadow self'*
me: *sneaks up on unsuspecting hunter*
me: *sneak attacks with glass longsword for 6x damage*
foe: ouch!
me: *runs behind object that conceals me and casts 'shadow self' again*
foe: ????? *loses track of me, searches for me for a while, gives up and sheaths weapon*
me: *sneaks up again*

etc, etc.

so i kill off 3 of the hunters this way and finally grab the key which opens the gate back up so i can get the fuck outta there. i make my way back to the entrance and lo and behold, the last hunter, an orc, is waiting for me with his archer buddy. time for 'shadow self' again

i cast it as soon as the orc is done telling me he's gonna kill me, run behind a large column, and hear him say 'he was just here a second ago. where'd he go?' then the good old bearfield instinct kicks in. i run up the 3 flights of steps and jump to an isolated platform where the orc can't get to me and the archer has a tough time shooting me. 8 invisible sneak attack arrow shots later (snipes, if you will), they're both dead and i completed the quest without having to use a single healing potion or healing spell

couple this incident with the fact that you can rob entire castles right under the noses of guards without being seen and it makes pickpocketing so much easier (i've stolen weapons off ppl this way) and imo you've got one of the best spells in the game. i'm sure the best spell will be whatever spell gives you 100% chameleon (invisibility, doesn't go away when action is taken) but that's a long ways off
59189, ummm... i just found a unicorn

meh. a dark elf assassin summoner has no business riding a unicorn anyway

*heads off to nearest city to sell unicorn horn*

Posted by bearfield, Sun Mar-26-06 11:58 AM
most everyone is asleep by then. when you get inside take EVERYTHING that's of value: books, potions, weapons, scrolls

it's also good to learn a couple of magic spells to make your thieving easier. you can get ease burden when your alteration level is still pretty low and that helps by letting you haul more stuff. the invisibility spell is obtainable once you get a 25 in illusion. if you need to get your magic school levels up, just learn a low level spell and cast the shit out of it while you're walking around and you'll get up to 25 in no time

vampire thing works, but so far its fortifying my str, spd, willpower, athletics, sneak, mysticism, illusion, hand to hand, destruction, acrobatics, and I have resistance for disease, normal weapons, and paralysis becaues of it.

Downside, I got a weakness to fire. And if I don't feed on ppl's blood then I gotta avoid walking around during the day, cause I lose health in the sun, but feeding on ppl is pretty easy

oh and whenever I sleep I get these weird dreams

being able to enchant items yourself is SICK. all you need is a soul gem and a regular item and you're set. the larger the level of the soul gem, the better the effect. not sure how you put multiple effects on an item tho. i enchanted my regular elven armor set to a +10 stat boosting armor set: intelligence on the helmet, endurance on the cuirass, strength on the gauntlets, agility on the greaves, speed on the boots. w00t!

improv's going to go crazy when he first gets here. there's alchemical ingredients all over the place. there's a litte garden with elf cups, wormoods, dryad's saddle, stinkhorn, nightshade, lady's smock, and about 20 others there for your picking needs

there's also a spell creation thingie but i never have enough magicka to create what i want :(

it's definitely worth the hassle of getting a recommendation from each of the guilds

imagine you're a seasoned arena veteran. you walk up the gate, it opens, but you don't see anything. then after looking around the arena for 10 seconds, you get hit out of nowhere by an icy blast that completely immobilizes you. as you're keeling over and trying to figure out what the hell happened, you get slashed in the back like 7 times. when you're able to move your body again you catch a glimpse of your assailant but he runs behind a column and vanishes into thin air

she woke up a few seconds later, but I thought I got out in time...went downstairs, and a guard caught me. I resisted arrest so he starts to attack me. Held me shield up and pressed A to surrender...and he let me go, lol.

"Get out of here" he says. So I left, and I still had the stuff I stole from her, haha. I guess having high sneak and personality skills helps with that.

But at the same time the product Microsoft has out is dope. The 360 has more stuff to do on it without a game than any system ever. So I just don't get what all the beef is about. In the beginning when you exit the cell and follow the King and his guards down below, they kill 2 people and one of them dies. I take all of thier stuff and everyone just stands there. Is something else suppose to happen? Is there a switch I missed? All the doors are locked and I have no key. The King keeps saying "protect yourself", the guards dont want to be fuck with and I cant do anything else.

although even if you don't play online, you can still do a decent amount of stuff online with a hard drive (and it's free too).

I don't think theres a time limit to cure yourself. If u talk to the right people you'll eventually receive a quest to find a cure for vampirism. But honestly you get quite a few boosts to a lot of your chacters stats and the only thing you need to do is suck blood every few days, seems like a pretty good trade to me.

Here is the Vampire thingy-I didn't write this, but I figured it would be good for the sticky:

COMPLETE GUIDE TO CURING VAMPIRISM:

Prerequisit: Before starting off on your journey to curing your vamiprism, I highly reccomend you join the Theives guild. You will be doing alot of sneaking, lockpicking, pickpocketing, and stealing. You will level up in the Theivies guild which will make this easier, and most importantly, you will have access to all the lockpicks you could want via fences. They have 101 to sell you each day, and your going to need them. Also, you can clear your bounties in the theives guild for cheap, and not loose your stolen goods. Since your going to risk getting caught alot, this will come in handy.

Quest - A Cure for Vampires

There are a number of ways to iniate this quest. Here is how I did it: I went to Cheydinhal's Chapel of Arkay, though any chapel should do. Talk to someone in there about a cure. They will start you on the quest.

The first step in the quest is to talk to Raminus Polus about a cure. You can find him in the Arcane University located in Impereal City. He will tell you a bit about it, and refer you to Count Hassildor. You can find him in Skingrad. Talk to his stuard, then eventually he will talk to you. He will tell you about how he and his wife are vampires, and while he lives with it, she could not, and went into a coma. He needs the cure to get her out. He then tells you about witches long ago who could do it, and about one of them which may still be alive.

You can find the witch along the Corbolo river, which is east of the Impereal City. Here is where the fun begins. Before she will help you, you have to help her. She requests you bring her five empty grand soul gems. These are tough to find, and this is where your Thieves guild work is going to come in handy. Before working on this, go get some lockpicks from your fence.

Gem One: This is an easy one. Go to the Impereal City Market District. Find the Mystique shop. He has one gem for sale. Four to go.

Gem's Two - Four: Your lockpicking skills better be up to snuff now. Head to Arcane Univerity. Best to go at night, you will be theifing. Go inside, and on the first floor there is a chest with three Gems inside. All are Grand gems, but I believe two of them are not empty. Take them all wayways. Its a level 5 lock, so your going to have to work at it, but its worth the effort. Make sure no one sees you. Once you get it open, take them all.

Gem Five: Head to the Chorral Mage's Guild. Inside, there is a staircase, and display cases to the left and right. The one to the right looks tempting, three gems inside. None are grand though, save your picks. The one the left has one though. It's another level 5 lock, so good luck to you. Once you get this, you have five, but two probably aren't empty. No matter, the hard part should be over.

Gem Six: Head to the Bruma Mage's Guild now. Walk straight in and slightly to the left into their little shop. If the shopkeep isn't there, wait for her. When she comes back, barter with her. She's got an empty gem. If you don't have money, you can try to pickpocket it off her, but I found it easier to just buy it.

Gem Seven: Head to the Cheydenhol Guild now. To your left and down the stairs, talk to the shopkeep. Same as before, buy it, or try and pick it from her if you wish. Congradulations, you now have your five emptys, and your probably a pro at lockpicking by now.
Go visit Melisande again now. She will take your gems, but you aren't done yet. She says she can probably make the cure, but you need a slew of ingreadiants. She asks you to find six Garlic Cloves, five Nightshade Leaves, 2 BloodGrass Shoots, The Blood of an Argonian, and the dust of the vampire Hindaril. Collect the first three items first. Much like the gems, this can be quite tedious. Below you will find locations for all the ingreadiants you need.

Garlic Cloves: These are fairly easy to find. Many Alchemy shops, Inns, and Mages Guilds have them. Just work your way from shop to shop until you have six. I know that the Alchemy shop in the Impeareal City has one. I also found two in an Inn in Chorral, and they restock every few days. This should not be to hard.

Nightshade: This proved to be the hardest. First, head to Impereal City, to the same Alchemy shop you got your Garlic. She should have two. After a few days, she will restock one more. After that, she will have no more. That gives you three. A fourth one can be found from the shopkeep in the Corral Mages Guild. Go purcahse that. That leaves one more, or two if you do not feel like waiting a few days for the Impereal City shop to restock. For these you will be hearding to Cheydinhal. Quick travel to the west gate, and then exit the city through the west gate. Turn to your left and follow the cities wall until it ends. Now look to your left, you should see a large right with a tree to the right of it. Next to that tree, you will find a Nightshade plant. To your left, there is a lake, and you should see some old pillars across the lake. Swim across to them. Now face South, and follow the edge of the lake until you come to a tree with small rocks on either side. You will find a couple different plants up against the tree, one of which will be Nightshade.

BloodGrass: This is the easiest part of your quest. The Alchemy shop in Impereal City has four, so buy two of them, and your done. If you are feeling like that was to easy, this stuff is all over Oblivion. Enter a gate and grab some. Your choice.

Blood of an Argonian: Melisande gives you a special dagger or this. You don' need to kill them, just give thema good stab and hide so the gaurds don't nab you. For those of you who don't know, an Argonian is the lizard looking people.

Hindaril's Vampire Dust: If you are at a decent level by now, this should be a breeze. At level 5, this was a cakewalk. Go to the location on your map. It is pretty straightforwared navigating your way there. Once inside the cavern, you will have a few things to pick off before you get to your vampire. I ran into a few rats, a few skeltons, and two lesser vampires before I got to him. I made short work of them all. Hindaril was the easiest of them all though. He did not use a weapon at all, he tried to kill me with his fists. I made short work of him. Maybe I just got lucky, but this was far from difficult.

So, you now have everything. Take it all back to Melisandre. She will tell you she can prepare the cure, and to come back in 24 hours. This is it. Go enjoy your last night as a Vampire. Feast on everyone you can get your bloody hands on. Then go take a nap. The next day, pay your friend a visit again. The cure will be done. Feel free to drink it. You are now officially cured, but your quest isn't over. Remember the count? Head back to Skingrad and pay him a visit. You will be taken to the place where his wife rests. Melisandre will be there also. After a bit of dialouge, he gives her the cure, but it kills her. He requests you give him 24 hours to greive. Go back into the Count's Mansion and just wait for 24 hours. Same as before, talk to the Count. He will thank for you putting his wife at ease, and reward you with 500 gold. The quest is now officially complete. Congradulations!

oh and the alchemy merchant in imperial that is mentioned in the guide sells all 5 nightshades you need, all garlic you need, and all bloodplant(or whatever its called) you need...

Ok, I was on this task where I was meeting w/ this dude or whatever and I had been told not to trust him, but I met him anyways. So he's talking and says follow me and I was walking behind....and then I killed him hahahah. No reason, he was just walking and I was like "F this". *SLICE*

Now, at least in most games I've played, this woulda been a mission fail or something like that. Not in Elder Scrolls! I took his gold and some other stuff and slid back to my fighters guild place to sleep for the night.

I wake up in the morning and BOOM, the Dark Brotherhood joker was standing over my bed, talking 'bout "We know what you did..........and we like it" hahaha.

Meanwhile, the townsfolks were talking about how "someone must have gotten tired of his antics" (the dude I took out).

Great nerd fun.:D

The fighting is real-time: you swing your sword or club or whatever while they're moving and blocking and trying to smack you around. It is a tad clunky, at least for me so far (it might get smoother as I raise my levels...I don't know yet).

you get a gang of stat boosts (str, will, spd, illusion, sneak, and something else) that increase with each day you go without feeding (from +5 to +15), you get the uber badass 'hunters sight' ablilty (nighteye and detect life 100ft for 30 sec on self, 0 magicka), resistance to normal weapons and disease, and there's a quest to reverse it if you find feeding and sun damage to be too much of a hassle

you don't start taking sun damage until you spend 24 hrs without feeding. you don't even have to feed every day as long as you don't wait or sleep. i went a whole week (game time) without feeding or waiting or sleeping and stayed at the first stage (+5 boosts) and didn't take any sun damage. if you do it right, it's like stat boosts for free. the other 2 stages are easy to work around as you can just do missions at night

the only downsides are that you become more vunerable to fire damage and you look really ugly. it's totally worth it imo

the environment is completely different from GTA, you're not driving around cities in cars, you're walking on foot or at best on horseback.

what does square footage have to do with gameplay?

HORSE ARMOR! (you gotta pay though...200 points)
Damn they work fast...

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/699/699821p1.html

Oblivion Horse Armor Now Available
Ready For Purchase on the X360 Marketplace.
by Charles Onyett

April 3, 2006 - Today a Horse Armor Pack for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was made available on the Xbox 360 Marketplace. For 200 Microsoft Points ($2.50 USD) players can download a 2.52 MB file that will automatically be incorporated into the game. Upon restarting the game after downloading, a notice will pop up as the extra content loads. Once in the actual game, the horse armor will be immediately accessible.

Both elven and steel armor sets will be ready for purchase in-game. The elven armor is of a gilded tint, elaborately and ornately designed while the steel is more workmanlike and dull. After the first set, the armor costs 500 gold pieces and can be placed on any horse the player legitimately owns. In addition to giving the horse a significant upgrade in visual appeal, the armor also functions as insulation against enemy attacks.

would you like it better if I broke my oblivion disc in half?

they're selling the same wildly overpriced horse armor for pc (altho I hear they've already hacked it so you can get it free)

I do't think this particular add on is worth it, remember how I was against paying for the halo 2 maps then when they came out they were tight so I bought em.

it's not like they didn't put a few hundred hours worth of gameplay into oblivion, made it the length of black then charged for add-ons. then you'd see me backlashing, or better yet, not buying the game in the first place.

I dont have time to play this game. It gets beyong boring at times when I have to cover the entire town get one task done and after sitting in my chair for 4hours trying to achieve that one task, I start thinking to myself "I just spent the last 4 hours doing one task".

Like any boring TV show, Im now ready to turn the channel.

Posted by upUPNorth, Thu Jun-29-06 05:36 PM
i got it, the blade you get at the end has a chance of instantly killing by banishing the soul to oblivion, the quest is cool i guess, as a thief, it was huge for just another standalone dungeon even for this game, with first the main fort where this dunmer from morrowind is building up an army to conquer the empire of man, and they have their own little village in this mine way under the fort, and then the old ayleid ruin is under that where you have to find mehrunes razor. The ruin isnt that hard to get through if your acrobatic, but if youre not it seemed there'd be a lot more caves to go through in the ruin which i hope wasnt anything valuable i missed. I havent done the orrery quest yet so i dont know how it compares for 100 more points, but its a big dungeon for THIS game and i liked the little throwback to the morrowind conflicts since i liked that game.

Have you got the Thieves Den though, that things pretty nice, you end up getting your own pirate crew and they can go out plundering for you and come back in a week and give you your share. And they put a bunch a expert trainers and this hard chest that you cna just keep unlocking if you wanna level up in the den.

i dusted it off tonight... i want to get every achievement in this game, so that means I gotta complete Fighters Guild and Mages Guild and im set.

But the problem is, I was hoping they would fix the Mages Guild glitch in the patch, but they didnt! Im fucked.

If you do the ring in the well mission and leave the well... the body disappears as if it were any random dead body in the game... only problem is the ring is gone with the body and there is NOTHING you can do. And they didnt fix this in the patch. The only way for me to get those Mages achievements would be to start a whole new game.

thats wak.

Oh well, I guess I can still finish up the Fighters Guild quests.

your card doesn't rank well at all (just go straight to the bottom):

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6147127/p-6.html

I have a 7600GT (mid level back then), and needed quite some tweaking to run it at decent quality and a smooth frame rate.

Fighting monsters is no fun in a slide show. The good news is that you can probably get a graphics card that will run it for under fifty dollars. Although you need to take a look at the rest of your system as well, since a decent CPU and enough RAM are important as well.

You can find out here: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest

If you're going to play it, read up on Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul. One of the greatest mods (collection of mods really) for Oblivion, I wouldn't want to play it any other way anymore.

you might want to check out the nvidia 8800gt. it's actually pretty cheap and i got it to run crysis (the defacto pc gaming benchmark) on very high settings. here's a pretty good price on the "low-end" version of that card: http://dealnews.com/Gigabyte-Ge-Force-8800-GT-256-MB-PCI-Express-Video-Card-Cooler-for-70-after-rebate-6-s-h/237965.html

you also might want to consider getting another gig or ram. it will considerably improve game performance and ram is ludicrously cheap these days if you know where to look (i.e. not brick & mortar stores)

HUGE cosign on OOO. it's an amazing mod that changes so much of the core game (for the better) that it feels like a different game

one more thing. you can get even better performance on oblivion with this expertly written tweak guide: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html. i used it when i had a gfx card similar to the one you have now and i was stunned at how much better the game ran

I have a few tweaking/display questions...

Is there something I can tweak to get better performance out of my graphics card and RAM? I've looked around the internet and read that overclocking both my graphics card and RAM might be a good idea. Don't know how to do this...

here's a link to the RAM i bought: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134009

says the motherboard usually sets it at 667mhz, but it should go to 800

Also, any tips on resolution, refresh rate, quality vs performance image settings?
156761, With that card, and 2 gigs of RAM, you should be able to run it smoothly
Posted by Warp and Woof, Fri Jul-11-08 04:31 AM
Oblivion at least.

I think your current bottleneck would be your processor, but I don't know how heavily Oblivion relies on that.

Isn't it running well for you?
156810, haven't installed the game yet actually
Posted by Deebot, Fri Jul-11-08 12:27 PM
just wanted to make sure I'm getting the best performance out of my stuff. Thanks for your help in this post
156768, don't worry about tweaking your gfx card until you see how the game runs
Posted by bearfield, Fri Jul-11-08 07:07 AM
if the game isn't running well at low gfx settings and low screen resolution THEN i'd start to mess with the gfx card settings but i think you'll be able to run the game at high to very high settings at a high resolution and still keep a good frame rate (~30 fps). again, that tweak guide i linked earlier works wonders for getting the best performance out of your pc. it's worth noting that there's a tweak guide for gfx cards on that same site. i never used it past a few of the basic tweaks (never had cause to) but if worse comes to worse you can always turn to that

155917, I don't think it pays off well
Posted by Warp and Woof, Fri Jul-04-08 06:50 AM
the actual role playing opportunities are few and far in between (imo). In the end it's about killing monsters and fetching stuff, although excellently executed.

And again, the OOO mod makes it a whole different, and better game. You could play through the vanilla version first, and you'll have a great time. But OOO makes Oblivion much more rewarding in terms of danger and excitement. One of the biggest changes is that they got rid of the auto-leveling for monsters to match your skills. In vanilla Oblivion, you can pretty much wander everywhere without worrying about being outmatched, and 'weak' creatures like bandits and goblins stay giving you trouble even when you're supposed to be a killing machine. In OOO, you have to be very careful where you go at low levels, since certain areas are simply too dangerous until you gain more skills. Also, at later levels, you'll actually feel like the hero that you're supposed to be when battling goblins etc.

It takes some work figuring it out, but it's so worth it. I'm getting an itch as I'm typing about it.

Here: http://jorgeoscuro.googlepages.com/oscuro%27soblivionoverhaulfaq

155949, what are some of the badass specials?
Posted by Deebot, Fri Jul-04-08 02:22 PM
155956, they're almost entirely relegated to magic
Posted by bearfield, Fri Jul-04-08 02:56 PM
and even then i don't think that's what you're talking about. this game doesn't have 'specials' in the mmo or diablo sense. there isn't any kind of "you reached lvl 10 so here's a special move for your particular class" type thing. any 'specials' you receive are related to a particular skill and your mastery of it

on the physical attack side of things you unlock 'power attacks' for reaching a level milestone in a given weapon type. one power attack has a chance of disarming the enemy, one has a chance of paralyzing, etc.

with stealth, you're given sneak attack damage modifiers (2x, 4x, 6x, etc.)

reaching level milestones in magic skills unlocks a new tier of spells. you can create your own spells eventually and can kind of reproduce those diablo-type aoe spells of massive destruction, but not really. the magic in out-of-the-box oblivion is kind of dull tbh but there are a few really good magic mods that loosen up the rules of magic and make magic much more viable in combat. for instance, in vanilla oblivion you can only summon one monster at a time with the conjuration school of magic no matter how high your conjuration skill is but there's a mod that (among many other things) lets you summon up to 4 monsters at a time if your level is high enough. another mod has those crazy-ass "call lightning from the sky" and "freeze groups of enemies" at will spells you might be thinking of
155960, just reading the instructions

it says each race has like 2 specials that you can only use once a day, even melee.

155962, oh, those
Posted by bearfield, Fri Jul-04-08 03:18 PM
honestly i never used those, except for the orc's berserker ability and even that was used sparingly because the agility penalty is so harsh. the redguard's ability is pretty nice and the dark elf can summon a ghost but imo all those abilities are only useful for 10 levels or so because you can essentially recreate the effects of most, if not all, of the abilities with mid-level magic or alchemy. i never considered a race's special ability as a factor in determining which race to play
155965, gotcha

rather than thier little wackass special ability (Thief characters should be Khajiit or Wood Elf, or Warriors should be Orcs).

Not saying you have to it's just, you know. I DID do a pretty invincible Battlemage with the Breton race tho. I stacked so much Magic Spell reflect and Dmg Reflect on my armor that enemies literally attacked me and killed themselves. It was hilarious. I would attack the town guard and stand still as they hit me and then killed themselve from insanely high level of dmg reflect I had on. lol
156056, sounds like this game needs to improve some things
Posted by Deebot, Sun Jul-06-08 02:36 AM
special abilities are wack, and the persuasion element is pretty weak according to you guys
156064, it's a very flawed game in my opinion
Posted by Warp and Woof, Sun Jul-06-08 08:46 AM
but it's also awesome.

My biggest gripes with the vanilla version where the limited combat options (in terms of special moves and tactics), the fact that magic doesn't really evolve beyond getting the same old spells except a little more powerful, and monsters leveling up with you.

Still, the open world, impressive visuals and the fact that you leveled up through using skills instead of gaining experience points made it worth wile. Especially considering that there are mods that address most of the flaws of the original game.
156151, these mods
Posted by Deebot, Mon Jul-07-08 02:16 AM
do they require more computer power? Faster processor, more RAM, whatever?
156164, some do
Posted by bearfield, Mon Jul-07-08 07:33 AM
i think oscuro's has slight impact on performance. pretty much any mod that adds more of anything (monsters, npc's, buildings, etc.) will have some affect on performance but as long as you're not installing one of the texture packs or one of the mods that requires OBSE (oblivion script extender) i'm willing to bet that the performance hit you get will be negligible. following that tweak guide should offset any performance hits you get from installing mods
156201, ok thanks
Posted by Deebot, Mon Jul-07-08 11:55 AM
156329, also, there are mods that improve performance
Posted by Warp and Woof, Tue Jul-08-08 05:47 AM
Lower poly grass is one, I think. Do some searches or browse their forums.
156862, I've been playing and tweaking, playing and tweaking all day now
Posted by Deebot, Sat Jul-12-08 12:50 AM
something is a lil sketchy. I have it running decently right now, but it should be better considering my specs and everything I've done: defrag, low poly grass, max refresh rate, game resolution 800x600, most video options in the game set low, don't have anything running in the background, etc etc etc. I did install the OOO full, but I don't think that has much to do with it. The slowdown must be 90% from the low power message I get from the graphics card so I guess I'm fucked. I'm wondering how I can find out the wattage of my comp right now and what the card demands...and if i can change anything easily
156868, I don't think power supplies are expensive
Posted by Warp and Woof, Sat Jul-12-08 05:14 AM
but it'll have to fit in your casing.

I don't know enough about it to recommend anything. Maybe someone else on here does, or you might want to seek out a more specialized forum.
156875, I don't see how my computer couldn't handle it though
Posted by Deebot, Sat Jul-12-08 09:16 AM
it's only 2 yrs old and the card isn't even high end. Maybe I didn't plug in the power connector right, but if I didn't my comp prolly wouldn't recognize the card at all
156878, here's a psu calculator (link)

which driver are you using for your gfx card?

cool, where can I find what my motherboard chipset is?

>which driver are you using for your gfx card?

6.14.11.6921

is that what you meant? lol

right click 'my computer' > properties > hardware > device manager > system devices

yeah. did you get that off the disc that came w/ the card? check http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us to make sure you have the latest driver

I can get there, but then 25 things pop up so I'm still lost

edit: I see something with 945G and it matches in the calculator so that must be it
157004, damn it takes forever to level with OOO
Posted by Deebot, Sun Jul-13-08 02:02 PM
almost 5 hours of playing time now and I'm still level 1. Is that normal?
157050, which level mod in OOO (if any) are you using?
Posted by bearfield, Sun Jul-13-08 08:42 PM
if you installed OOO as an OMOD using oblivion mod manager it should have given you a million prompts, a few of which involved altering the leveling rates

if not, yes it does take forever to level in 'vanilla' OOO but i'm not sure it should be taking 5 hours for one level, especially @ level one. what are your major skills? you gain a character level by getting 10 (i think... it might be 7, but that might be from a mod) level increases in your major skills. you can have alchemy/blunt/acrobatics/whatever as a minor skill and level it up all day but you'll never gain a character level from it

also did you ever get the game running smoothly?
157052, RE: which level mod in OOO (if any) are you using?

>if you installed OOO as an OMOD using oblivion mod manager it

I'm using the OOO full, version 1.3 I looked into the leveling rates readme and you can either choose leveling 2,3,4, or 5 times slower than vanilla. I didn't choose any to begin with (don't know what the default was set at, must have been 4 or 5), now I just added the 2x mod.

>what are your major skills? you gain
>a character level by getting 10 (i think... it might be 7, but

>skills. you can have alchemy/blunt/acrobatics/whatever as a

yep I know...I'm an Orc warrior and I've been using blunts and blocking and heavy armor and repairing shit all day

>also did you ever get the game running smoothly?

it's smooth enough now where I can actually have fun, but I tweaked and downgraded EVERYTHING, lol. But the game still looks amazing to me because what the hell do I know about graphics quality of newer games? I haven't played one since Half Life Episode One and that was with my shitty graphics card.

Thanks again for your help in this post
157054, you really should be able to run the game way above minimum w/ that card
Posted by bearfield, Sun Jul-13-08 09:22 PM
i guess it's your psu but that doesn't make any sense unless you have a really low wattage (like 150w) psu
157057, that's what's bothering me
Posted by Deebot, Sun Jul-13-08 10:11 PM
>i guess it's your psu but that doesn't make any sense unless
>you have a really low wattage (like 150w) psu

it's a Dell Dimension E510, bought it 2 yrs ago. Definitely not a gaming comp but you'd think the power supply would still be OK
157061, the standard e510 psu is 305 watts which should be enough
Posted by bearfield, Sun Jul-13-08 10:28 PM
provided you're not running a gang of internal hard drives or cd/dvd drives

i wish i could help you more but if i were you i'd follow warp and woof's earlier suggestion of seeking out a more specialized forum like tomshardware or the newegg forums. i almost want to say that the problem is an psu amps/voltage incompatibility with the card but i'm really just grasping @ straws here
157062, naa you guys have helped enough
Posted by Deebot, Sun Jul-13-08 10:40 PM
I'm looking forward to playing/talking about the game more instead of my comp issues
158310, did anybody do the Paranoia quest in Skingrad? (spoilers)
Posted by Deebot, Tue Jul-22-08 03:10 AM
fucking BRILLIANT.

I spied on all 3 people for the dude = 500 gold, told him toutious was spying on him, he gave me a note telling me to kill him for 1000 septims (is that another name for gold?), i handed it over to the guards and watched them kill him, looted his body for 360 ish gold and his house keys, and now I'll loot his home. I honestly wanted to kill Toutious for awhile (if I could) but then realized the rest of my game would prolly be fucked up and hard. Left the option open though..
159817, Yea that was a multi layered quest. Really fun to do, lol.
Posted by ansomble, Wed Aug-06-08 02:19 AM
My favorite thing to do was explore all the forts and Aeylied ruins cuz there was always something wierd and fun happening in them whether it was a goblin war, marauders fighting bandits, necromancers squating in the ruins, or whatever the fuck else but it was always interesting.
158391, Mace of Molag Bal at level 3
Posted by Deebot, Tue Jul-22-08 03:16 PM
I won't even be able to repair it for awhile...lol
159815, yeah, my dumbass didn't connect the graphics card properly at first
Posted by Deebot, Wed Aug-06-08 02:11 AM
now it's running on high settings with 0 lag....beautiful game.

They want me to give up my Mace of Molag Bal though...fuck this, isn't there another Daedric artifact I can get?
159818, good to see you got it working properly
Posted by bearfield, Wed Aug-06-08 02:26 AM
if you're running it at high settings and getting a good frame rate, you might want to look into qarl's texture pack to make the game look a lot better: http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=OblivionMods.Detail&id=2363
