305852, Apple MacBook Pro/Airpods Event
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Oct-18-21 03:58 PM
The new M1 Pro/Max chips look insane and based off of the reviews of the original M1 I can't wait to see what they can do.

Just went on the Apple site and looked at the M1 Pro Max (wack name) and realized it won't be happening for me. Definitely copping the new AirPods for the wife. Thinking I'll eventually roll with the 14 inch in the future but really want to see how the Pro chip rocks with games.

I have no clue what they're talking about with a Siri (only?) Apple Music and care not about the HomePod Mini (if you have one let me know what you think).

Either way I'm looking forward to the first look videos when they pop up.

Thoughts?

If true these machines will do amazing things.
305855, I really hope so
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Oct-18-21 05:18 PM
My guess is that the M1's performance hopefully got game developers to pay attention and there will be more options with gaming on macs now.
305854, The AirPods look decent. And just like the rumors.
Posted by jetblack, Mon Oct-18-21 04:57 PM
Not bank breaking either. No ANC. That’s for Pro/Max AirPods.

I just got some Max 🎧 and I am very happy. Expensive but they do all the things.
305856, Shorter stems
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Oct-18-21 05:18 PM
water resistance and the tips? Seems perfect but since my 2nd get are still working fine the wife will enjoy having them.
305857, I want the larger screen but I have no use for all of that power
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue Oct-19-21 08:42 AM
i used to use the 13" models but i got a mid 2015 retina MBP and the larger screen spoiled me.

I can't see myself paying that much for resources I'm not gonna use like that. And the touch bar has been dumb as shit. So I guess I'm stuck with the Air.
305858, I have the 2015 too
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Oct-19-21 10:00 AM
but they killed off the toolbar so I'm good now. I want to see the reviews to get an idea as to how much power the low in MacBook Pro has first.
305859, Need reviews before I buy the hype
Posted by handle, Wed Oct-20-21 11:04 AM
Also they need a good solution to run Windows on the machines - Boot camp going any means that a MacBook still can't do both.

Also: Why doesn't the M1 Pro MAX have more CPU cores then the Pro?

Looking forward to reviews.
305860, yeah I'm looking forward to the reviews
Posted by L_O_Quent, Wed Oct-20-21 11:52 AM
305864, same.
Posted by jetblack, Sat Oct-23-21 10:27 AM
If I'm spending $2.5k+ I wanna know I have a 5-10 laptop.
305866, cores
Posted by beeinfinite, Sat Oct-23-21 07:04 PM
the M1 Max is the M1 Pro with more GPU cores. considering how full bodied the new macs are, even apple can't escape the laws of thermodynamics. more cores and i'm sure we would entering the same territory most intel machines exist in, throttling, heat, and weak battery time. 10 is more than enough considering the best mobile chips have 8.

I purchased the 14 M1 Max. Looking forward to running it through its paces.
305868, post up your thoughts

I'm waiting on the reviews and IRL speed.
305869, will do
Posted by beeinfinite, Sun Oct-24-21 02:56 PM
hoping i get it next week but seems unlikely. so far the synthetic results have been impressive.
305887, really want to hear what you think

305871, Wow. It's fucking beast.

they're ridiculous, and I'm told the fan didn't even come on

305874, That is some amazing engineering and software.

No fan at peak performance?

Wow.
305879, yup
Posted by beeinfinite, Tue Oct-26-21 11:11 AM
i've been shopping for a laptop for a while, went through a bunch of PC's with horrible quality control issues. was just about to grab the M1 13 pro, glad i waited.

nice to see apple leading in innovation and putting the industry on notice. the way they designed their silicon is clever, instead of spreading all the necessary components across the logic board, they stacked them, allowing electrons to travel quickly/efficiently without generating too much heat.
305873, I'm considering one of the M1 Pros...
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Mon Oct-25-21 08:49 PM
I haven't used OSX in a very long time, and I haven't even tried to run a hackintosh since maybe 2013. The only thing is that I don't really run many things that require all the power; I do some computational stuff and maybe some local machine learning stuff on occasion (most real machine learning stuff happens on the cloud anyways), but that's about it. And I'll be building a new computer with my current 3080 and when the Alder Lake chips come out, so I'll have a very powerful desktop for most things + gaming. The more I think about it, it makes more sense for me to wait out for the M2 MacBook Airs, and it's basically just me having to fight the urge to impulsively buy the latest and greatest. Apple really has done something really amazing with their M1 chips, because now you can actually justify Apple's premium for their hardware.

EDIT: I didn't realize they don't call it OSX anymore.
305876, LOL at OSX

305878, Shows how removed I've been from Apple since I stopped
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Tue Oct-26-21 10:08 AM
using a hackintosh, and I've been using Google's phones since the first Pixel came out. I've been in the market for a laptop for a while, but I've been holding out for years because there's always been something I've felt was missing from the ones on the market. I've considered the various Thinkpad X1 Carbons, but they used to have really poor screens. It also took a while before they started using quad core CPUs, and all the MacBooks had those terrible butterfly keyboards that I would never use. The current MacBook airs are probably the best value on the market right now, but they're due for a refresh, and if they are going to get similar upgrades (e.g., added ports, thinner bezels) with the M2, then it'll be an easy decision for me once they're out. I haven't completely ruled on this M1 Pros, however, because the extra screen size is a nice plus, and they're still a very good value for what you're paying for, and it's just a matter of the user having enough of a usage case to justify buying one.
305877, you're right about the pricing
Posted by Rjcc, Tue Oct-26-21 08:51 AM
they're expensive as shit, but you can't say you're not getting what you're paying for

305888, need to see that screen.

Looking forward to you all's review and you need to get on the Vergecast Sir.
305893, in time. I skipped the new york event, I had something already planned

305890, it's ok we know what your talking about.
Posted by jetblack, Fri Oct-29-21 03:48 PM
:)

macOS, OSX ... same thing.
305889, Got my wife an M1 MacBook Air.
Posted by jetblack, Fri Oct-29-21 03:47 PM
That's a nice laptop. Going to get myself a few Mac Minis to pay with soon.
305891, nice choice
Posted by beeinfinite, Fri Oct-29-21 06:59 PM
i use a 13" M1 MBP for work form time to time and it's an amazing machine.
305894, I'm torn between 14 and 16...
Posted by Kira, Sun Oct-31-21 07:56 PM
The 16" M1 Pro base and 32 gb ram models has the best battery up to 16 hours.

The 16" has a slightly easier to reach keyboard and better speakers compared to the 14" m1 pro.

The 16" M1 Max has the best gaming performance. Video editing and music production is similar across pro and max configs.

The 14" weighs less and has a smaller 3K resolution.

Not sure what to buy considering this device has to last 8 years like my late 2013 mbp. Leaning towards m1 max with 64 gb ram, 8 tb storage, and the 32 core gpu.

Apple basically bundled everything together so the only thing easier to replace is the battery.
305895, you should go to an apple store to decide
Posted by beeinfinite, Mon Nov-01-21 08:42 AM
i've read many stories of people buying the 16 and returning it because it was too heavy, afterward, stating that the 14 is the perfect size / weight.

>The 16" M1 Pro base and 32 gb ram models has the best battery
>up to 16 hours.
>

keep in mind, battery is shortened significantly when using at full load. you're not going to be editing 4k video for 16 hours. the difference between the 14 and 16 is 2 to 3 hours.

>The 16" has a slightly easier to reach keyboard and better
>speakers compared to the 14" m1 pro.

i wouldn't buy these machines for gaming. still not anything stellar although better.

>The 14" weighs less and has a smaller 3K resolution.

aye.

if you don't mind the weight, go for the 16.

i purchased a 14 m1 max with 32gb and 2tb. unless you're running many virtual machines simultaneously, working with massive data sets, or insane polygon counts for 3d, 64 is overkill. there is a pretty good video comparing the 16gb to 32gb with no performance differences between the two, but it's your money.
305907, or best buy. They have both models on display.
Posted by jetblack, Thu Nov-04-21 10:00 PM
305898, picked up a 14" mbp
Posted by beeinfinite, Tue Nov-02-21 07:49 AM
it's chonky and square, but very well built. the black on black keyboard is awesome and i prefer it over the old.

performance is snappy and i haven't heard the fans come on yet. i have the m1 max 32gpu variant.

size and weight is perfect. glad i went with 14 over 16. the screen has a lot real estate, the notch is not an issue and you stop noticing it shortly after you look at it for the first time. it disappears in full screen mode completely.

speakers are phenomenal. the magsafe charge is great, cable is braided, feels premium and well built.

screen is beautiful and bright. there is 0 backlight bleed, screen was pitch black during backlight bleed tests, however, there is some blooming around white objects on a black screen but its not too bad.

was expensive, but worth it. highly recommend.

305904, Nice.

I couldn’t justify it. This base Mac mini is fine. I have a PC Rig that can’t compete in basic tasks it’s insane. I’m very happy with my purchases.
305903, M1 is a beast. M1 Pro and Max are epic.
Posted by jetblack, Tue Nov-02-21 06:49 PM
Pretty amazing. I really love my M1 Mac Mini. It’s just a new toy to play with. It’s very responsive. Like whoa.

These are SNAPPY computers.
305910, unless you need the extra gpu cores, go with m1 pro
Posted by beeinfinite, Fri Nov-05-21 08:52 AM
i regret getting the 32 gpu core as i will never utilize its full potential with my workflow. m1 pro would have been just fine with added battery life. i should have put the money into storage instead. i'm leaving the country in december so i have no time for an exchange. still an amazing machine but would have liked that extra 2 to 3 hours of battery.
305912, I'm going to get some external storage
Posted by jetblack, Fri Nov-05-21 11:14 PM
Whatever the 2022 Mac Mini/Mini Pro is I'm getting that. Don't need a laptop. I have 3 and they are collecting dust.
