305361, Very curious about how Apple's M1 pans out
Posted by L_O_Quent, Wed Nov-11-20 11:36 AM
but based off of last night they only dropped the weakest end of the spectrum.

Anyone getting one?
305363, I'm gonna wait for the reviews
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed Nov-11-20 12:26 PM
I put a SSD and 16GBs of RAM in my 2012 Macbook Pro but it's time to let it go. Battery life is terrible on it, it's heavy and Big Sur is not taking it along with the ride.

The idea of a powerful, fan-less Air definitely has my attention, but their vague ass claims about how much faster this processor is looks wild sus.

If the new Air winds up being bullshit them I'm probably gonna buy the Lemur 14 and go all in with PopOS!/Linux
305365, So vague.
Posted by L_O_Quent, Wed Nov-11-20 05:21 PM
the thing is they usually aren't super far off with their promises but this one I'll have to wait on.
305364, they were vague
Posted by Rjcc, Wed Nov-11-20 04:12 PM
it clearly will have power and battery life running stuff made for it, but how will it be with stuff that isn't and how long will that take to tip over

idk

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
305366, same.
Posted by L_O_Quent, Wed Nov-11-20 05:22 PM
it is intriguing that they might have hit on something but then again I bought the first iPad sooo I don't believe the entire hype and know how they'll drop a beast with a totally different form factor in a less than half a year.
305372, This is me.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Nov-13-20 04:06 PM
It's promising that Adobe already has native apps for Lightroom and PS, which means Premiere and After Effects (hopefully) are right behind them.
305369, Benchmarks are coming in
Posted by Mafamaticks, Thu Nov-12-20 03:25 PM
https://www.macrumors.com/2020/11/11/m1-macbook-air-first-benchmark/

Looks promising.

Still gonna wait for the reviews though
305370, I’m finna find out because I copped a 13 inch Pro
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Nov-12-20 04:04 PM
Not worried too hard about compatibility because the main app I need is confirmed native.

I am lowkey worried about my beloved OpenEmu...the devs haven’t said anything about the switch. But it’s legit the only concern I have.

My current MBP is seven years old with a dual core i5. It still runs fine, but the battery is long in the tooth. I am NOT worried about the M1 Macbook out performing it in every way. Like my iPhone clearly kicks its ass.
305371, Got confirmation the OpenEmu team is working on a native app
Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Nov-12-20 10:25 PM
I’m gucci.
305376, dope, let me know what you think.
Posted by L_O_Quent, Sat Nov-14-20 12:24 PM
I was hoping one of the tech YouTubers would have have one by now but still crickets on that end.
305379, Windows compatibility gone too?
Posted by handle, Sun Nov-15-20 02:39 AM
Why only 1 chip in these, if it's low power and doesn't need cooling then put 2 chips in and rock this shit.

Going to have to wait for reviews and actual user feedback.

Because a superfast single threaded Mac is fine for a lot of stuff, but having that Windows compatibility really helped for work things.

And multithreaded apps seems to take a pretty significant hit on these first ones in benchmarks.

305384, I think it's gone since that was based on intel
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Nov-16-20 01:12 PM
we'll see when they start rolling out first impressions though.
305385, it's a SOC, the memory is right there
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Nov-16-20 05:24 PM
I don't know how trying to run multiple in parallel would work.

305386, With the first impressions I have to say I'm impressed thus far
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Nov-17-20 01:05 PM
The speed, even for a first gen, is seemingly impressive. The fact that everyone keeps saying that you can do video production on the base level Air sounds amazing. I don't really get the purpose of the base level Pro though at this point but the Air and Mini look pretty dope.
305387, Yeah, I prolly shoulda just copped an air haha
Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Nov-17-20 04:24 PM
Hoping the battery life claims hold up, though.
305392, the battery life on the Pro is jaw dropping
Posted by L_O_Quent, Thu Nov-19-20 03:15 PM
the only thing with the Air is that it seems it's worth it to jump up to the one with the 8 cores. I've never seen a jump like this in prolly 25 years honestly.
305395, The GFX on the 13' are slightly boosted.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Fri Nov-20-20 02:54 PM
I forgot the video, but a guy said that was another difference between the Air and the 13".
305396, really?
Posted by L_O_Quent, Fri Nov-20-20 04:23 PM
the only thing I've heard is that the base level Air has 7 cores and no fan but the midlevel with 16 is comparable. Aren't the graphics on the SOC?
305397, So, ALL reviews agree that these ROCK
Posted by handle, Fri Nov-20-20 06:14 PM
Single threaded performance is > than any other Mac EVER.

Multi-thread is middle of pack.

Anything bad that I can find:
2 ports is a bummer - but they are USB 4 - which means - I have no idea what that means.

Windows compatibility/boot camp is gone.

The 16GB ones are in short supply.

305399, I ordered a 16GB Pro. Had to wait 3 days after launch
Posted by IkeMoses, Sun Nov-22-20 11:57 PM
Not too bad.
305398, Finally set mine up. It’s snappy as hell
Posted by IkeMoses, Sun Nov-22-20 11:15 PM
I’m not doing any benchmarks, but it flies through whatever I throw at it and I haven’t heard the fans once and it’s cold to the touch.

Haven’t encountered any compatibility issues either. When you open up an Intel app, it just has you download Rosetta and then you’re good to go.

I’m not on a clean install either. I migrated 150 gigs of data from my previous Mac. I’ll let y’all know if I encounter any issues, but as far as I can tell these things perform as promised.
305400, dope, what were you coming from?
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Nov-23-20 10:40 AM
I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and really considering the Air with 16GB of ram.
305405, Late 2013 13” MBP
Posted by IkeMoses, Mon Nov-23-20 05:46 PM
If you’re in need of an upgrade like I was, go ahead and cop. There’s nothing concerning and you’ll get a major performance and battery boost.

But if you can hold out a year or two? I probably will, because you’ll be able to cop a model refresh and probably an even more powerful chip.
305406, Yeah I’ll probably go with the Air
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Nov-24-20 04:29 AM
In a few months.
305408, I have a late 2013 15" and a 2019 16" from work
Posted by Triptych, Fri Nov-27-20 10:24 AM
I think I'm gonna cop the 16" M1 update.

In the meantime I'm copping AAPL. I've never seen laptop reviews this good.
305411, Had this thing unplugged for two days
Posted by IkeMoses, Sun Nov-29-20 09:05 PM
Haven’t used it much. Did some light surfing. Checked some emails. Updated the OS.

Still at 94%.
305423, A week and a half unplugged. Light usage. 66% battery.

305432, Two weeks. 59%. Gonna plug it up this weekend.

305412, The Youtube "reviewers" are RIDIC
Posted by handle, Mon Nov-30-20 12:43 AM
This is what they do:

Day 1: They show the box, can't talk about it.
Day 2: unboxing but don't turn it on.
Day 3: Turn it on.
Day 4: Benchmarks
Day 4: Review it - with an emphasis on whatever janky ass video workflow they use to make Youtube videos.
Day 5: Review it again while comparing it another model.
Day 6: More benchmarks
Day 7: The "updated" 1 week review
Day 8: Should you throw away your old Mac RIGHT NOW??

Some of these assholes are like "The base model $99 Macbook Air with 8GB ram struggled to export my Red 8K footage from DaVinci when I had 16 color grades applied while I also used photoshop and watched 8k Youtube videos." <-I'm not joking, one asshole did that that "review."

These new machines seem to be KICK ASS for everyone EXCEPT people doing professional audio and video with defined workflows. Most of those people have $3k MacBook's at least, and many have $15k Mac pro's and they're simply not capable of reviewing the product from a "human being" stand point.

I don't need a Mac right now, but these seem very sweet for the price.

305414, I don't need one either
Posted by Triptych, Tue Dec-01-20 10:03 AM
And it makes sense to buy only when you can't stand your old tech.

Buuuuut I'm still looking at a dedicated mac mini for the studio. These reviews are just too good.
305563, seeeeeeeeeeee
Posted by Invisiblist, Sun Mar-21-21 11:21 AM
that Mac Mini is the real story for me right now.
305419, the thing about independent/youtube reviewers
Posted by Rjcc, Wed Dec-02-20 03:17 PM
that I get annoyed by from people claiming their favorite youtuber is unbiased...

every video is made to do its best to keep you watching the next 20 seconds of that video.

on all the major sites, every reviewer is hewing to format too, but they don't really care if you skip to the end and just check out the summary.

305416, I grabbed a base model Mac Mini
Posted by ChampD1012, Tue Dec-01-20 05:07 PM
Hooked it up to the TV...

I was so impressed that I ordered a BTO Mac Mini with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD...won’t get here until December 30th...I’ll return the base model once it comes in...

Apple overdid themselves here...I bought a 16 MacBook Pro on sale earlier this year...I don’t regret the purchase because of the discount but if I paid full price for it, I would be pissed...
305425, might go this route
Posted by L_O_Quent, Wed Dec-09-20 08:28 AM
305422, The base macbook air outperforms $1500 Windows notebooks
Posted by Kira, Sun Dec-06-20 11:26 AM
That's unoptimized Rosetta for the record. 1080p and 4K render times are ridiculous.

Watched issues with swap memory but that's solved with the 16 gb option. The issues with both devices are hardware related: 720p webcam, two usb ports, no dgpu support, and touchbar inclusion on the pro 13.

Intel has to respond before q3 2021.
305424, I just placed an order for the base MacBook Air M1 256GB
Posted by handle, Tue Dec-08-20 06:55 PM
I pick it up on Thursday night.

I don't need it at all, but man, I'm intrigued.

I did the $899 education price - so I better learn something.
305441, I played with it and returned it
Posted by handle, Mon Dec-28-20 11:51 AM
It was a fast modern Mac.

For what I do I don't need a MAC laptop AND a PC laptop (and I have 2 desktop PCs in the house too.)

I returned the Macbook but when I need to replace the PC laptop I may consider going back - especially if they have Windows running on it in a supported manner.
305564, Pro video editors on Reddit say
Posted by Invisiblist, Sun Mar-21-21 11:28 AM
FCPX rendering and export are stupid fucking fast compared to even top-end computers from the previous generation. I think some of them have been saying that is even with the 8gb ram versions.
305590, After seeing the iMac, I decided to get the Mac Mini
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Thu Apr-22-21 01:32 AM
I wanted a bigger screen and once I started looking into them I decided to get something that could also work for my Xbox Series X for 120 HZ stuff (my 4KTV only does 60).

Anyway, this thing is pretty cool! Makes my 2015 Macbook Pro seem slow as shit.
305596, I'm caught between the Mac Mini & Air
Posted by L_O_Quent, Fri Apr-23-21 05:36 AM
I have the 2015 MacBook Pro but it's working fine so I can't justify it plus they just replaced the battery.
305742, I've had an M1 Air work laptop for a bit now
Posted by Rjcc, Fri Aug-06-21 06:57 AM
and I bought my wife an Air with 8GB of RAM (she has a gaming laptop and a work PC for heavy stuff) and it runs just fine

they really did it

I know a lot of people have been saying that 8GB is actually really solid with the M1 MacBook Airs, but I still would just like 16GB for the sake of it. The current M1 MacBook Airs can be found for only $750 right now, and that's an incredible deal for what you're getting. Macs are still generally overpriced for what they are, but I feel like the current MacBooks, especially the Air, don't really have any real competitors with the current sale prices. They really did an amazing job with the M1s, and I am actually considering using a Mac again after stopping about a decade ago. I'm not in a rush, however, so I think I will wait for the M2 Pros and eventual Air refresh to see how the thinks look.
305744, I had to buy her one so I could the racing wheel I wanted
Posted by Rjcc, Fri Aug-06-21 05:21 PM
and all the 16gb options that were easily available jumped the specs in a bunch of ways, I figured if it didn't cut it we could take it back but yeah, it just works fine

305929, Waiting for the MacBook Air/Macbook refresh
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Nov-12-21 03:21 PM
My wife's MBP (09 I think) is just about on it's last legs, even after replacing the battery and putting in a SSD. She wants another one, but looking at the current options, little makes sense. Not enough ports on the Air, too much for the 14" Pro, and the 13" Pro is a lame duck. No real goldilocks situation

She's got the same issue with upgrading her iPad. The Air is now underpowered and not enough storage, while the Pro is more than she needs or wants to spend, but makes more sense between the two (especially with that M1). In this case the $200+ difference I can stomach. The laptop? Not so much
305930, Keep an eye on the refurb page for M1 Macs, Spen.

305931, what does she do?
Posted by Rjcc, Fri Nov-12-21 07:55 PM
I mean, you can use external storage with the Air if you need more than 256gb,but what are you packing on an iPad at that point?

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
305934, Why do you consider the 13" Pro (M1) a lame duck?
Posted by soulfunk, Tue Nov-16-21 12:48 PM
Starts at 1299 new, 1099 refurbished, with an M1 chip. Same issue with as the Air regarding lack of ports would be the one downside.

And yeah - the current iPad lineup is weird. A TON of models available, and somehow no goldilocks.
