usually battle systems in jrpgs are secretly (or explicitly) complex and need some time to stew before their full depth is revealed. rarely (if ever) will you get the full flavor profile when you are in the early stages of the game

that said i didn't particularly enjoy this game either. however it's a cool game to watch a speed run of since damage items are busted and there are a lot of different routes due to the different starting characters and paths they can take to complete the game
