302313, any systems admins out there?

I oversee some now, what are you looking for?
302317, just seeing who's out there

I lucked into the role(but not REALLY the role) more or less at my current job.

It's crazy, I came into the company temping in manufacturing but when they saw I knew a little something about fixing desktops they split my time between a depleted IT dept and manufacturing. Eventually the other guy got so lazy they fired him and now I'm the only guy left.

I don't know a 10th of the shit I should know and neither does any one else in the company oddly enough.

with that said anyone ever deal with WSUS?
302318, We use SCCM which leverages the WSUS database to do updates

I'd check if you have a System Center license, if you do, you can use any of the System Center products.

EDIT: What kind of help do you need with WSUS?
302319, do you think its best to just go sccm
Posted by Effa, Tue May-30-17 01:53 PM
or the standalone wsus?

so I walked into a half configured wsus standalone and I'm experimenting with it now. This thing is not user friendly. i wonder if thats by design to get people to go to sccm?
302320, If you're licensed for it, I would def deploy SCCM

It is more than just for windows updates. You can set configuration baselines, deploy applications/packages, OS Deployments, task sequences, etc. It is an amazing tool, it is also quite complicated and you could easily destroy an environment if you don't know what you're doing.

302321, there in lies the dilemma

they obviously don't care about the IT dept like that since they have me overseeing the whole thing with 0 prior experience besides taking porn viruses off PCs.

So if I go off on my own(even if I test in a VM) and eventually take shit down there is no safety net.

"IT" basically is a department they just attach to another engineer's scope of responsibility every now and then.

Maybe I convince them to hire a consultant to set it up and just show me how to manage it going forward, that way I at least have someone to talk to when shit goes wrong...

thanks man. I feel like there are tons of OKP's in tech and this board seems to be all about gaming since the jump.
302322, Inbox me about any of it

I've deployed multiple environments over the years and currently manage a large state level one.
302323, much appreciated!

302460, If you are all in one location

WSUS is fine to use on its own, get a dedicated server and can even use the internal database.

If you are multiple sites, much easier with sccm. Also sccm 2012 is amazing pushing out software packages, 3rd party updates like java and adobe, etc.
302344, me and I'm on call this week.

I build and configure servers most Cisco UCS and some legacy Dell PowerEdge, manage VMs (VMware and Hyper-V), getting into SCCM administration, office 365 administration and whatever else pops up.
302408, how often do you get after hours(not 9-5) calls?
Posted by Effa, Wed Jun-14-17 10:25 AM
i got a cell phone a few years ago, luckily i don't have to deal with too much after hours unless a pc dies.
302410, every 4 weeks.

I'm salary but we get paid an hourly rate after hours. No one ever calls we just check alerts and mind the store. Our infrastructure is very stable so we have some time to research new tech to implement in our environment.
302480, i envy you
