Both dev teams went about making modern installments to their respective franchises by returning to the essence.

Doom 2016 is the answer to "What makes Doom feel like Doom?" and SFV is the answer to "What makes Street Fighter feel like Street Fighter?"

Hitman could be included in this too.

These games didn't really separate themselves from the competition with package features (Doom's multiplayer was an afterthought, Hitman had that risky episodic model, and SFV is the first game to be in beta for two seasons), but by leaning into their identity.
