Representing different series.
So Ryu will have 6 different arcade campaigns (SF1, SFII, SFA, SFIII, SFIV, and SFV). Not all characters will have this many, but that's the baseline.
Each ladder will have it's own ending. Capcom says there are 100+ arcade endings:

(yes, that's Two P from Final Fight coming at Ryu during the barrel bonus stage)
It looks like the endings are going to be panels and text done by Udon.
The Extra Battle mode will feature NPC fights and challenges where you can unlock exclusive costumes, like Rashid as Viewtiful Joe:
