thereby facilitating immersion for the player. this can be achieved purely with art direction but that's somewhat rare. most games use power and art direction in concert. when power is lacking it can undermine the art direction and immersion-breaking things happen: jagged edges, poor draw distance, pop-in, bad textures, etc.
what about modern games makes you think they're going to age poorly?
