I'm still trippin' off how it has that good campaign feel, and you see random people just drop in outta nowhere playing the same game/AI you are.

Cant play PVP yet, but it's bungie, so I'm sure it dope.

It isn't Halo....and that's okay. But that solid feel, like Halo...this game has.

Game still plays well and I'm sure bungie has all types of DLC ahead to keep it interesting.

You jumpin the gun before the shark...

This game is good money.

Can be repetitive, true...but the perks make up for that to me.

>story is trash

I see the story as being vague as hell so they can build on it with expansions.

Right now it is blah, but I'm sure they get good writers to build on it, it will become more interesting over time.

>limited open world

See expansions....only scratching surface on playable universe.

they can and will add in other planets, moons, asteroids and even other soular systems, and I'm sure they will eventually make sense of what the darkness is with more playable areas...

I can see peoples gripes on this game, no doubt, but it's fun to me and its MILES better than Titanfall.

292057, so far Strike missions, Titan class are my favorites
Posted by celery77, Wed Sep-10-14 08:39 AM
last thing I did last night was the Strike mission on the moon. I feel like the first thing I do when I log on again is run it back another time (plus there's a bounty related to it that I want to fill).

I have three characters built out past level 5 (been running with different groups) and the insane running in, launching, and ground pounding with the Titan is the most satisfying. Plus the melee bonus fits my style of play. Besides that the Hunter is really fun with its big power and the throwing knives are stupid fun, even if their recharge was a little less helpful on the build I was playing.

Awesome game. I expect to have three different level 20s to start the raids with before too long.

everything about the story/lore/organization sort of stinks, but I also love how this game doesn't hold your hand at all in a Dark Souls kind of way while also presenting some very easy to understand mechanics rather than some super complex stuff. you just play Destiny, and it plays you back, and any of the missions on Hard are a fucking blast. My Titan is working its way to Level 21 but I might go back and work on the Defender subclass, or level up a Warlock/Hunter.

Posted by IkeMoses, Thu Sep-11-14 01:03 PM
Destiny is geared toward being more social and balanced.

They have similar settings. Borderlands takes itself less seriously and manages to be funny sometimes.

They're trying to be different games, though. Borderlands is FPS Diablo. Destiny is FPS WoW.
292089, get geared up
Posted by Paps_Smear, Thu Sep-11-14 12:43 PM
raids drop next week gonna try em out as soon as they do. No doubt they'll be hard as hell and we prob wont make it through the first time but I'd love to take a stab at it.

Once you hit 20 there is something called "light" on your gear and the more of it you have the the further you can level up past 20. This is needed if you want to do harder content.

Looks like for now doing the strike playlist on harder settings is the easiest way to achieve this.
292102, yup, all my best gear has come from Strikes
Posted by celery77, Thu Sep-11-14 05:10 PM
The best items I have at lvl 14 are from the Moon Strike, running it a second time was totally worth it. I keep playing lower levels with friends, so I haven't hit 20 yet, but once I do I'mma just run Strikes till the raids come out. Might patrol some to get Vanguard level, too, since some cool gear seems connected to that.

But yeah, just the difference between a blue item and a green item is HUGE.
292091, despite the lack of story, it has some depth
Posted by Grand_Royal, Thu Sep-11-14 01:04 PM
I like doing the bounties. Most games have challenges, but I like being able to pick the ones I want and the rewards are worthwhile.

Obviously, there's a lot u can do as far as customization with your armor, abilities and weapons. U have meaningful options. U don't look like everyone else and u are really leveling up the weapons instead of just adding the same attachments.

The Strikes are pretty challenging, although I'm pissed that I lost connection to the server, right near the end. U really have to use some strategy and teamwork. U may even have to change weapons during the mission and I like that u change them out on the fly

I've been gettin destroyed online, but it's a lot different than playing against the AI and cats are a lot more powerful; I just got level up and get more reps in.

I can't say it's the greatest in anything, but it's solid single player, co-op and multiplayer.

I really wish there was some kind of hot button for your secondary weapon. I'm a Titan so I rock a shotgun most of the time but there are moments like the Venus strike where you TOTALLY need a Fusion or Sniper rifle and it sucks having to "pause" a game that's unpausable and let the icons load in for a second before you can find the right gun and get back to action.

Because some of the armor perks are tied to weapon types, or the Strength / Discipline difference can affect style of play. I figure it will be the raids that really tell on this, because according to what they're saying full team strategy will be key.

292109, I can't decide if I like the Titan Defender subclass
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-12-14 01:43 AM
just started using it tonight, and it was a big adjustment. It's obvious you have to be very strategic about when to use the dome shield, but I can't answer when that right moment is. The problem is that you're safe in the shield, and it lasts quite a while, but you can't shoot out of it. And enemies can penetrate it, so if you just put it up where you're cornered, you still run into the problem of things like Hive Knights just running in to melee kill you anyway.

I had *mild* success using it as a decoy, popping it right in front of the Strike Boss characters, in the open, so that character just shot at me endlessly, freeing my teammates up to move around. That worked sorta okay, but while that happened I just stood there and contributed nothing. On a few maps, I found actually useful spots, where you could duck in to avoid damage, then duck out to pull off power shots. I'm assuming with communication, that's what will happen in the bigger missions.

But yeah, then the other thing is once you use the shield, it takes a looong time to come back, unless you're in a good Orb of Light enemy spawn. So you can just pop it, have it be a total waste, then have to wait another 4 minutes to get it back. And you don't even soak up the occasional nice kill in-between.

I'm hoping the deeper I get in the skill tree, the more useful it gets, but right now it's a big adjustment (and a little less fun feeling) stepping off the Striker subclass. Just adjusting to the non-codex build, where you don't get the extra armor and movement, is really something...

Game stays awesome, though, most fun I've had with a video game since I can't remember when.
292117, keep using it
Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri Sep-12-14 10:23 AM
It starts off lackluster until you build it up. Now its awesome and have saved team mates countless times.

You gain a bonus shield while inside, so i lure them in and I shotgun or melee them to death and they hardly hurt me. There are also other perks later on in the skill tree that allows you and your team to gain bonus damage every time they pass through it.
292118, yeah, I read up on it -- real perks seem to hit on the 3rd tier
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-12-14 10:33 AM
Very interested in the Orb of Light generation, because one of the first early uses I found was against Phogoth (the Moon Strike boss, th chained ogre) where you could pop the shield in an open space, then Phogoth only targeted me. I could just hold his attention for 30s (45s if I get that next perk, which apparently also starts counting against your 4m regen time), and if I was dropping Orbs of Light every time he fired against me? Sheeeeeit.

Then yeah, looks like you can build out a strength-based short-range melee monster with the punch overshield, or a dome shield damage sponge who perks teammates, which could really amplify with Intellect boosts and a team smart enough to utilize the perks.

I think I'mma stay on Defender until I max it out, then round out Striker. Hit about 19-1/3 last night, got on to the Strike playlists, so I'll be looking to join on bigger runs over the weekend. Still have the stoy on the 1st mission on Mars lol, might just wrap that up to hit 20, but Strikes are really where it's at.
292127, My Striker is pretty much maxed.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Sep-12-14 03:55 PM
I'm missing Amplify (Storm Fist raises special meter, which sounds fantastic), Transfusion (Storm Fist regens health, again, dope), Codex VI (whatever) and Juggernaut (shield after sprinting). I played a Vanguard (coincidence?) in Mass Effect so Titan was an easy choice for me and I've been scared to try out Defender as a result, but I'm curious if working on the Defender has given any hint as to how you unlock the third subclass? Or if that's tied to some raid/Light stuff at a later date.

Part of me wonders if the "locking in" of fully leveled up subclasses is the key. I.E. I choose all my subsets for Striker and Defender, lock them in, and that creates my overall Titan? That sounds too cool to be true.

292131, I don't know anything about a 3rd sub + it's jarring to go to Defender
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-12-14 05:54 PM
Here you are with a nice, high-ish level Strike Titan that can just wade into the middle of enemies and tear shit up, then you switch to Defender and all of a sudden you can't double jump, or even throw a grenade. Then once you get the dome shield, it doesn't help with any kind of damage, and it definitely takes some adjusting just how to strategically use it and what enemies will kill you when you pop it anyway (i.e. KNIGHTS). Oh and you might not realize it, but those Codex skills make a difference. JEEZ my Defender felt slow and useless when I first switched.

But then right after the dome shield you get a punch that if it kills, puts an overshield on you, so you're good wading back into masses, encouraged to do it even. Pretty soon the dome shield is helping you regen when you stand in it. Up next for me is the dome shield giving damage perks and the overshield resulting in reload and stability bonuses (I think?). Anyway, once the Defender starts ramping up, it starts feeling a lot better, and just one big light punch feels less necessary. Since I'm mainly interested in the Strike playlist right now, it's co-op nature feels good. Oh and right away the Defender grenades are better, that did help me early on.

I don't know anything about the locking in or 3rd subclass. My plan was to max Defender, then max Striker, hopefully have a flexible offense/defense build. And yeah, I was a Vanguard player, too lol. Right away I knew I wanted the class designed to wade into enemies with. I get so bored trying to hang back while other dudes cause all the ruckus lol.

Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Sep-15-14 10:27 AM
Took me awhile but I'm on light level 24 and got enough vanguard marks and rep to get me the legendary chest.

The only complaint I have about it is that when a purple drops and you turn it in at the tower you'll sometimes get a green or blue in its place. If a color drops for you then you should always be able to get that color at least when you turn it in, not lower. Thats mmo 101 shit right there.

Having fun though and can't wait til more content drops. Got to the point where we can 2 man the lvl 24 strikes without it being that hard at all.

Can not wait to get into the 6 man raids. Hopefully they add better boss fight mechanics than just throw a boss in the middle of the room and flood you with adds.
292182, 'Beat' it. Shot out to Tw3nty for the assist with that last boss.

I'm digging the game but I can completely understand every complaint about it.

I was also getting disconnected a lot, which meant I played parts over and over again which was annoying as hell (seems like that got fixed with the most recent patch though).

recommended level is 26

keep in mind each level you are lower than the required level you get a 20% decrease in damage and you also take 20% more damage.

There are 8 bosses in the raid

As of now one one has beaten the second boss lol
I love it!
292200, if I buy the purple chestpiece, I think I can hit 25, although...
Posted by celery77, Tue Sep-16-14 06:25 PM
I was kinda contemplating upgrading my lowest level blue (which is an 18, either gloves or legs, can't remember) because it seems like the level cutoff is what determines the gear's real value, so I was thinking I could upgrade as aggressively as possible (my blue chest piece is level 20 right now). Dunno how that will shake out with the light, though, so I might just upgrade my level 20 blue to a level 20 purple just to make it to 25 ... doing bounties tonight will get me to Vanguard Rank 2, so I'll have to figure it out.

Also tried out the Ward of Dawn effect where you pick up a damage bonus, boy did that suck. You're just so conditioned to treat that shield as an invincible barrier, I just died straight off forgetting all I got was a bigger gun (and I tested the damage a bit with it, the boost didn't even feel that substantial). Then again, I was thinking if you're on a 6-man Raid team, is it possible to double-stack the Ward of Dawns and get double bonuses? Like stack wearable over-shields and damage perk in basically the same bubble, then one trip through will buff you on both? I was gonna experiment with it at some point...

Excited for the raids, like you said the grind is real. The loot stays steady RIGHT up till the end game, which is a bit odd. I've been grinding quite a bit and immediately scrapping 90%+ of items I pick up... still like the shooting though, so I'm not too mad.

Oh yeah, I figured out how to join the clan correctly on bungie.net, too, so hopefully that helps with something.
292215, update your lowest item only if it gives you a light boost
Posted by Paps_Smear, Wed Sep-17-14 09:21 AM
I got my vanguard chest first because that was the only thing under level 20 I had left.

The next day I ended up getting a legendary head piece which was the exact same one they sell for vanguard marks. This week I can get another vanguard piece which will be boots, then I'll buy the gauntlets off the vendor that appears on the weekend with the strange coins.

The weekly heroic is a bitch though, even at level 22 that damn moon strike is the hardest strike in the game. I'm level 25 and we tried it last night and died like crazy. If you can be on tonight we can try it together I thinking having two titan defenders will help with our shield.
292233, got purple gloves, now I gotta farm resources to max level it
Posted by celery77, Wed Sep-17-14 06:13 PM
I was a little pleased that I got the first defense upgrade in with just the supply of (Helium?) I had built up playing already, but at the end of that item there's THREE tiers that need helium? Damn, that'll be a bit of a grind, but I like playing the patrols aimlessly, so I'm not even that mad at it.

there is something undeniable about this game.

I'm just not sure what it is.

The story is still dumb. The content still feels hollow.

But there's still something.

It's not just that it's pretty and has solid combat. The last Killzone was pretty and had solid combat and I didn't play that shit again after I beat the campaign.

I'll keep playing Destiny for a minute, though.

I think that the game doesn't force you to do anything is the saving grace.

Story missions getting too repetitive? Play some Crucible. Keep getting bodied in the Crucible? Play some Strikes. Strikes taking too long to finish with the dying ass fools you got paired up with? Do patrols to farm your bounties.

The game does a good job at rewarding you for whatever you choose to do, and that shit is addictive.
292224, the story is more nonexistent than dumb

I'm guessing it can only work when there is enough space as determined by the program to materialize.

I seriously finished the game without paying attention to what was going on in regards to the story, because there basically isn't one. Some of the ghost's lines were funny, but other than that I have no clue what was going on. All you have to worry about is killing shit.

but this is why

the grind, the struggle, to get better.

It's more of a hard work pays off sort of thing. You just know the more you play the better gear you get and the more content you can clear just to say you did the hardest one. Then you see the rewards that come from it and you want to play even more.

This is the same thing that kept me playing WoW for years.

The story isn't really there, but with a game that survives by releasing more content I think we're seeing just a tiny start of something. I just keep thinking how this is the warm up to shit popping off heavy later in the series.

I sit and work thinking about how I'm gonna farm some more when I get home and try to get a legendary drop lol. It's addicting.

292228, I can see that. I feel so manipulated, man.
Posted by IkeMoses, Wed Sep-17-14 03:19 PM
I never played a legit MMO before, but that Borderlands gameplay loop is similar. Get better gear, beat harder enemies, get better gear, beat harder enemies. I got stuck deep in that game because of that shit.

Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Sep-17-14 09:51 PM
I know, just from my offline gaming experience, that I have a very high tendency and addiction for grinding and completion (my RPG clock times prove as much lol) so I've stayed away from the MMO and online shooters because they just continually feed into that behavior. The closest I've ever gotten was in FIFA's online mode (where you accumulate points to buy new player cards and add them to your roster....if the chemistry rating wasn't broken, I can only imagine how many hours I would have sunk into it), but I'm more than ok with just my 300+ hour first time play-throughs of fallout and skyrim lol.

i don't even know what the desired outcome of stunt casting is. at best the player recognizes the actor and is reminded of their work elsewhere. this doesn't seem to accomplish anything for the game. at worst the actor phones it in and the player wonders why the actor was even hired in the first place. the illusion of the character and/or narrative is broken and the player is taken out of the gaming experience for some amount of time

I managed to get up to 13 strange coins last night, so I'll get some gold equipment on the weekend, and my Striker class is approaching full XP, so I should be able to comfortably switch between subclasses. My purple gun is slowly leveling, too, but I already have the resources to get it at least up to explosive and armor piercing ammo.

I get the feeling that maximizing subclass builds will be key, too. Like some grenades for some spots, some orb bonuses or different perks in others. I've definitely developed different subclass strategies on all the different strikes depending on the level, aside from just the right weapons equipped.

But yeah, I wanna raid, but FIFA 15 downloaded overnight and I think I'll be on that tonight, should be back to raiding soon, though...

292389, Bungie's full comments on upcoming patches
Posted by Nodima, Thu Sep-25-14 04:08 PM
On September 9th the Bungie team traded late nights building Destiny for late nights playing Destiny with all of you. We'd looked forward to that day for years, knowing that it would bring millions of fresh eyes into our world and quickly change many of our plans and priorities. We were not disappointed.

In the last two weeks there have been many surprises, bugs, exploits, world firsts, and a whole lot of fun. It's been an amazing time. We think now is a great time to step back and let you all know how we think the game is holding up and to talk about some changes we are contemplating going forward.

We will be patching some of these issues as early as today. Others may not be addressed for a month or two. Stay tuned for updates and thank you for all your feedback online.

Loot

He Who Shall Not Be Named
Long ago during development, the Cryptarch decoded engrams of a given color into gear of that same color. Early in 2014 we added randomness, both for better and worse, to the decrypting process. The result was that end-of-session engram decoding got a lot more exciting and the Cryptarch himself suddenly acquired a personality. Both of these experiences were positive additions to the game.

But we didn't adequately communicate the potential random outcomes of decryption. Players see what looks like the familiar metaphor of item identification, while the Cryptarch thinks he's opening a grab bag of loot. Rage sharding of blues ensues. Expect to see changes to address this soon.

Destiny: The Cave
The social experience of a cave farming run is amazing: the herding to get a team of Guardians all behind the line and firing in the right direction, the rush to grab the loot, the scramble when the panic wave starts, the beckoning glow from inside the cave. The speed at which the community organized around this activity was inspiring and humbling to us.

But shooting at a black hole for hours on end isn't our dream for how Destiny is played. Our hope is that social engagement in public spaces is only one part of the Destiny experience. Expect changes soon which decrease the efficiency of cave farming and correspondingly increase engram drops from completing activities.

Reward Celebration
Growing more powerful by acquiring new upgrades, gear or progression is central to Destiny's player experience. Our goal is to always celebrate when this occurs, both as a reward in and of itself and to communicate to players what is going on.

During development we sometimes prioritized making a system functional over celebrating its rewards, for example:
The Vault of Glass contains highly coveted loot but the actual moment of reward happens without fanfare and can be easily missed.
The lowest level of the Daily Heroic gives great XP and Reputation rewards, but neither of these progressions appears on the postgame screen.

We will slowly be addressing these and other issues going forward.

Social

Voice Communication
Our vision for Destiny is that all players, even matchmade players in the Crucible, Strikes, the Tower or public spaces, be able to communicate with one another in a way that promotes positive socialization. Voice communication is the easy answer, but existing voice paradigms, including those in our own Halo games, have not done enough to protect players from abusive griefing from a minority of players.

Destiny's near-term solution will be to allow players to opt-in to voice communication during matchmade activities. Work on this feature was underway at launch and should be rolled out this year in Strikes and the Crucible.

Activities

Strikes
Strikes are intended to be a fun, combat-filled romp and stomp with a big boss and cool rewards at the end. Better with cooperation, but doable in a pick up group.

Since launch we've tracked down an issue which has made Strikes more challenging than originally designed by both increasing damage taken by players and decreasing the damage inflicted by players on the boss. Expect to see this addressed soon, and for Strikes to become a little less grindy as a result (sorry, Raiders - incoming damage is working as intended in the Vault of Glass).

Balance

Our goal when balancing Destiny is to never have one player choice-- for example a choice of class or weapon-- either be so much better than the alternatives that it is the only valid choice or to be so much worse that it would always be a mistake to choose. When we are successful with this kind of balance the result is a wide set of equally compelling player builds, some of which may be preferred by one player or another but none of which is an absolute right or wrong choice.

Exotic Weapons
Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel and sound overpowered, but to not actually break the game. We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts and expect their idiosyncrasies to sometimes be a little frustrating. We find ourselves wanting to collect them all and hope players feel the same way.

Not all our Exotic Weapons currently live up to this promise. In particular those weapons received from completing exotic bounties including Thorn and Bad Juju have disappointed many of us who have gone through the great effort to obtain them because, despite looking and sounding amazing, they feel underpowered. We're here to offer some advice: don't shard those guns. Their time will come.

Auto Rifles
The Auto Rifle archetype is designed to appeal to players who like to throw up a wall of bullets and not worry if a few miss their target. It is intended to inflict sustained damage at close to medium range, but to lose effectiveness at longer ranges.

Today the Auto Rifle is too effective at long range, even beating Scout and Pulse Rifles in some circumstances. Expect stability and/or damage adjustments to the Auto Rifle to address this in the weeks ahead.

Scout Rifles
Scout Rifles are for players who like to keep their enemies at medium range and hate to miss. They are intended to be an awkward weapon to use at close range but to be dominant-- as long as you land your shots-- at medium and longer ranges.

Scouts just aren't hitting hard enough today when compared to other precision weapons. We'll be addressing this soon.

Shotguns
Shotguns are for those situations where you need to deliver a massive spike of damage, right now, to the thing standing next to you about to do you harm.

Today shotguns are effective beyond their intended range, especially when upgraded with that intention. Expect changes soon to address shotguns which push the envelope of what it means to be close quarters.

Thank you for helping us drive these changes. Keep sharing. Keep talking. We’re watching and listening.

292392, yoooo -- NICE purple loot guaranteed for doing Queen's Kill Orders
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-26-14 08:56 AM
got a helmet that would have cost me 180 vanguard marks essentially, and a new plate that I equipped just because I liked the way it looked with the Queen symbol better.

Plus the missions weren't bad at all. They're just story missions, so the best strategy is to just save up all your rocket ammo for whatever the final boss is, then immediately on that boss spawn unload the rockets. I completed four Kill Orders last night and multiple times we killed the boss before even a single add spawned in. Too bad I'm not getting Queen rank, I would like one of her marks, but the purple armor I got is pretty dope and should push me to 27 if I level it all...
292396, I don't have friends, so I tried to solo those missions.
Posted by IkeMoses, Fri Sep-26-14 02:47 PM
I'm a level 25.

I got no purple weapons.

Wasn't happening.
292398, ha, yeah -- we had a 28, 26, and 23; they were all 15m or less
Posted by celery77, Fri Sep-26-14 04:31 PM
the only bummer is that it's random what purple piece you get, so I got the helmet, then the chest piece, then the chest piece two more times, and it only recycled into plasteel plating (Titan armor material).

The boss battles WOULD have been hard, because the minions were all super-fierce, but as long as all three of us just opened up with rocket launchers the moment the boss activated, it worked great.

This is a game where I'm adding anyone decent to play with onto the friends list right now, though, because you never know when you'll need a hand lol
292401, Pay attention to the elemental modifier.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Sep-26-14 06:29 PM
If you have a secondary (preferably fusion or sniper, getting in close isn't recommended since most enemies are attuned to whatever the assigned element is and do major damage) and heavy weapon with that elemental, you can rip through all the shielded enemies (fuck Shanks!) and take out the bosses way quicker than if you even did the mission on regular easy mode. Did the Mars mission with the giant Fallen general guy dressed in all white and took him out with three sniper headshots.

Posted by Nodima, Fri Sep-26-14 06:46 PM
lol @ the snark in the last comment

The 1.0.2 patch will go live next week, and includes several changes to the Cryptarch and Engram experience. These changes guarantee that Engrams will always decode into items at or above the quality of an engram.

Only Engrams that drop after 1.0.2 are subject to this change.

Cryptarch Changes
Cayde-6 took the Cryptarch aside and showed him a sack of doorknobs. He decoded that mystery pretty quickly.
Legendary Engrams will always produce Legendary or better quality items, including Materials or Exotics
Rare Engrams will always produce Rare or better quality items
Rare engrams will have an increased chance to produce Legendary quality items

Activity Changes
Daily Heroics, Weekly Heroics, and Vanguard: Tiger Playlist activities will include Rare and Legendary Engrams in addition to their existing rewards

Item Changes
Ascendant materials have been promoted to Legendary to closer associate them with the gear they are used to upgrade
Legendary Engram items that exist in your inventory will be demoted to Rare quality when the patch goes live, so decode them while you can. But let’s be honest--even if you don’t, we all know they were blues already...

Currently a level 27 hunter.

I have like 4 purple and 2 exotic primaries, an exotic secondary, and a purple and exotic heavy.

I bought an exotic engram from the homey Xur and ended up with an exotic helmet, which is pretty nice, but its buff is for the golden gun (extra shot). My Gunslinger and Bladedancer stats are both maxed out, but I prefer Bladedanncer for both PvE and PvP, so I want to buy the exotic helmet that is currently on sale now just for the rader while still aiming the primary.

Better bonuses and they also give you a higher light level.

For example a raid piece may have a bonus that allows you to do extra damage on enemies that you'll find in the raid thus making it easier when you do it again, also allowing you to get through the raid on hard mode (level 30).

Also got a weapon at the end. Apparently they have primary weapons that have solar, void, and arc damage on them just like your secondary normally has.

Very fun experience. Now if I could only find 5 other people that can commit a few hours without having to leave I could run them through this.

I'm at about 27.5 right now, could probably hit 28 if I found enough Ascendant shards. Got the Exotic chest plate this weekend, have a purple gun with all the damage except for the last tier, all armor is purple, both subclasses are maxed.

I wanna raid, but yeah, right now I end up trying to help my friends rank up post-20 when I group with them. Pretty difficult finding six players ready to really work on that raid...

292428, WOAH!! it cannot be overstated how shitty the Crucible is!
Posted by celery77, Sun Sep-28-14 02:51 AM
and here's the thing -- I've played LOTS of multi. I'm the dude that would tell my friends, "I know multiplayer sucks when you just jump in, but give it some time, learn a bit about the game (filter out the assholes), and you'll be fine."

The only thing Destiny has going for it is that I don't need to hear the assholes.

The Crucible (multiplayer) suuuuuuuuuuucks.
It sucks so much.
It's the trashest multi I've ever played.
Oh good god it's so bad.

Basically, every encounter with another player is over before it begins. Oh you got a cool sniper? Well sweet, you're at medium to close range, so you're dead. Oh you just reloaded you're auto so you're ready for a medium to short range encounter? Well the enemy has a Heavy, so you're dead. Oh you just tracked an enemy on your radar and took up a strong position in anticipation of the encounter? Well that enemy is using their super, so you're dead.

I can't even count the number of times that I couldn't get a shot off or didn't know what was happening before I died.

And those moments where I killed another player? Those moments of "accomplishment"? I shot them in the back, or else it was 2v1 so I would get either the assist or the kill, or I had my shotgun at close range and pulled a quick kill. It had NOTHING to do with me being "good" at the game. It was empty, just using either better equipment or better position.

Jesus christ it's TUUUURRRRRRRRRRRRBBBBBBBBLLLL (c)Chuck

(And I have to do a fucking BOUNTY to get an Exotic Weapon for this? Well, I'm prolly just never gonna get that gun...)

It's so bad...
The multi is just dogshit...
It's indefensible...
292430, oh yeah finally got sick of it all, just started sitting down every life...
Posted by celery77, Sun Sep-28-14 03:03 AM
and every single person that found me (sitting down, doing nothing), then killed me, ended up getting shot and killed by someone else immediately after. So even when a player was literally giving up, sitting down, and conceding to getting shot, it resulted in a 1:1 K/D because the multi is so fucking shitty that the only that matters is getting the drop on the other player.

Oh god it is sooooo traaaaaaash. I was just sitting there, doing nothing! And every player that shot pacifist ME got immediately killed afterwards! 1:1 K/D for shooting a player that's not even playing!
292432, I'm gonna let you rant, but that shit is fun, bro.
Posted by IkeMoses, Sun Sep-28-14 09:57 AM
I'm a horrible competitive FPS player. I get bodied so much. Destiny is no different. I stay getting murked, but I stay murking too.

It IS all about getting the drop on somebody.

Everybody can one hit kill anybody. Everybody can one hit kill like three or four people at a time. Even noobs like me. And that shit is so satisfying.

The game is not perfectly balanced moment to moment, but everybody is OP so it's balanced overall. Better players still win more than the unskilled, but everybody who jumps in can compete.

It's actually a great multiplayer experience.
292433, Nope, its trash
Posted by Paps_Smear, Sun Sep-28-14 11:20 AM
I do really well in it to, and I can admit its trash.

Like, I've done the exotic weapon bounty that forces you to play PvP to complete it. The one where you have to get all these kills with a void weapon and if you die you lose points towards your goal.

It's still an unbalanced mess.

The ONLY reason I even do it is the bounties and hope I get an exotic piece out of it. Other than that, horrible multiplayer.
292436, You just mad I blinked behind yo back with the shotty.

Posted by Nodima, Mon Sep-29-14 04:00 PM
I'm usually 20-30+ kills ahead of the next closest (and that's alongside probably leading the team in deaths due to my Titan's reckless behavior, Striker or Defender), but in Crucible I've had even a 1:1 K/D MAYBE once. Even in games I go on a 5 or 6 kill streak, I tend to follow that by not getting another kill the rest of the match. My assist game is on point though, I usually lead the team in assists.

292474, I mean, I *know* I always suck at multi for the 1st hour or two
Posted by celery77, Mon Sep-29-14 06:27 PM
Doesn't matter what game, just takes a few rounds of eating shit to learn things like what's dangerous, what's effective, and what part of maps are better than others. I know I just need to grind at it for a bit, but maaaaan -- it's just sooo unsatisfying even when you kill and so frustrating when you die. It's ambitious to include everyone's class and equipment in the multi, but it definitely does create some balance issues. And in the end I feel like I just need to camp, exploit certain map areas, and avoid encounters with any kind of danger class. I don't like playing multi that way.

At some point I might get the feel for it, but right now it generally takes me about 1.5 rounds before I'm just cussing and running like a maniac, totally unfocused, because I just want the round to end so I can get a random drop before I leave.
292523, raided up to the final battle checkpoint last night -- super fun
Posted by celery77, Wed Oct-01-14 05:56 PM

Everything about that Raid is great. They need to keep delivering content like that, and people will have nothing to complain about.
292526, realizing once you get to 25 or 26, you HAVE TO play with others
Posted by liveguy, Wed Oct-01-14 06:19 PM
Otherwise you're stuck.

Finding ascended shards and whatnot is a pain and the game doesn't match you up with other players to play with for Raids or Heroic daily's and weekly's which makes no sense.

I sincerely hope these updates add something worthwhile cause I am SICK of playing the same levels over and over and not being able to update my defense on my helmet to get more light cause I can't get no damn shards. lol!!!!
292529, I actually just picked up a random invite in the Tower for the raid
Posted by celery77, Wed Oct-01-14 07:00 PM
More and more, I've been getting random invites as I come across blue players. I've picked up a couple -- some are dudes just wanting a partner, others are low level dudes who want me to carry them through shit. I don't really appreciate those.

And actually, the guy who hit me up last night was smart enough to send me a message that said "Raid?" and that's all I've been wanting to do, so I found that guy up front near the Post Office, waved, pointed, etc. then he invited me into a party and they had five dudes, just needed a sixth, so that worked out perfect.

I've seen that a couple times now, large groups of lvl 26+ guys clustered in the Tower, so I figured people were starting to assemble public raid groups. So yeah, don't be afraid of the public! I'm hoping over time a little bit of culture or etiquette will pop up for players to assemble looking to complete the stuff like you're talking about, because it can be hard getting friends all on the same activity at times.
292537, yeah I got a rando invite in the tower last night

Like by that tree by the gunsmith or some isht!

Go check the spot at the top of every hour to see if cats are there and link up to get it poppin'

292543, Kinda getting stale now
Posted by Paps_Smear, Thu Oct-02-14 01:45 PM
Can knock out the raid in less than two hours now. Hard mode is next, but I've done the raid multiple times and NO RAID GEAR has dropped to even help move to 30. And the ONLY way you can get to 30 is by equipping the gear that drops from the raid and upgrading it.

Constant problems still exist. Last night was doing the Nightfall Weekly Strike, the one where if everyone in the fireteam dies you all have to start over from the begining. Get to the last boss, almost kill him, other two members die and I'm the only one left. What happens? A bungie network error (the one that happens to people all the time). Bam, all that work down the drain for nothing.

What keeps me back is the grinding aspect of it thinking I'll get a new weapon or something to that effect.

These cats got a lot to learn from companies like Blizzard who have perfected the loot/grind element of games in which this was sort of based on.
292545, I'm kinda relieved it's mainly daily / weekly events pulling me on
Posted by celery77, Thu Oct-02-14 03:18 PM
I've been playing this game heavier than any game I've played in a LONG time, so having it reach a point where I have just a few things to do, maybe run with friends and chat a bit, is kind of a relief.

Right now, I feel like I'm just prepping for the weekend -- gonna hit Vanguard lvl 5 tonight, see what the random unlock is. Then I'mma wait for the weekend vendor, see what he has for sale, decide then how to spend my Motes of Light or Vanguard Marks. Then I'll just see if friends wanna run anything, and FINALLY get to really playing FIFA and Forza lol.

And I figure I'll keep working daily grinds, prepping for new content. If I need more, start grinding my Warlock character, but I've already played this game more than I have lots of games I own, and did it more socially than anything since TF2 or L4D.

But yeah, starting to max out the content currently available.

292547, the expansions not coming till december is not good
Posted by liveguy, Thu Oct-02-14 03:55 PM
People burnt out already and it's only been 3 weeks.

They should have had more on disc content to keep things interesting until the expansions dropped.

The higher level you get, the more you get that.."what else is there?" feeling and I'm only 26, so I know 28's and 29's are REALLY feelin' that way right about now.

After 2 or 3 months of apathy due to 'been there, done that'...people are gonna be real ho-hum on jumping back in once December rolls around.

Hopefully the updates can add some zest to keep folks interested in the meantime.

Them packs better be CRAZY dope!

292574, You need armor with light rating
Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri Oct-03-14 10:50 AM
other than the standard Intelligence, Discipline, and Strength. There is also gear with light on it. The more light you have across all your armor the more your level will go up.

Start doing strikes at your level and you should get some drops from there, equip them and you'll get up there.
292577, basically you need blue (rare) armor pieces
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-03-14 11:32 AM
They will have a light attribute. Sometimes this means you will replace some green armor with better stats or a perk you like, but it's the only way to level.

The reason the level matters is because you pay a 20% penalty for being under-level, so if you're level 21 on a level 22 mission, you'll deal 80% damage and receive 120% damage (you can still beat missions under level, we just did a 28 with a team of 27s last night and it wasn't that bad), but anyway that's why sometimes downgrading stats to gain light is good.

Once you have blue gear, just look at the equip level and that will tell you if it's better or not, so if you get a level 17 blue chest, then you find a level 18 one, regardless of the stats the 18 will max out at a higher light level.

So yeah, start on level 20 strikes, and as you gear up to 22, switch to 22 strikes, you'll get better gear. That will ramp you up to 24, switch to that strike, and then around 24 or 25 you will need exotic (yellow) or legendary (purple) to keep going up, and the grind to find and maximize those is a whole nother thing...
292578, I tried Vault of Glass last night

Just figuring out out how to beat it is crazy.
The process that you have to follow is crazy.

Then actually executing the strategy to beat it.
Made it to the last checkpoint but we failed so many times before that.
The loot chests were awesome tho. Found all 3.
292589, Vault of Glass is so fun, they need MORE content like that
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-03-14 06:51 PM
like, as much as possible.

less giant versions of the same enemies that soak up bullets and kill with one shot.

More teamwork, more switch pressing or unique items defining team roles, more "defend a patch of ground."

and actually another thing I'm a bit miffed that they just missed on was replicating the old Firefight mode from some of the Halos. I loved that mode. I know it was fairly tedious to some, but I loved it. Had a single Firefight session go damn near two hours once, it was some of the most fun I ever had playing Halo.

But yeah, the complexity of Vault of Glass needs to be the model for all new content going forward.

at 26 its practically impossible. im trying to grind a bit and get my armor up so maybe i can hit 28 (im about half way) but im basically down to needing ascendant shards... starting to get impatient/frustrated.

also in need of new content for this shit. the only thing that interests me at this point is the vault of glass and i KNOW i'm not ready for that shit.
292718, if you're just 26, you're ready to go on the Vault of Glass
Posted by celery77, Sat Oct-11-14 10:19 AM
the only thing you CAN'T be on the Vault of Glass is under-leveled, because then you just can't do enough damage and die too quickly. As long as you're on level, you can work through it.

If you want it to go MORE smoothly, though, what you need is weapon gear you really like, and it helps to have both subclasses leveled out and at a point where you really know how to use them. I play Titan, so I'll switch between shield and striker depending on the exact encounter, and I have all perks available so I can fully tweek my setup to work how I like. But yeah, first time I tried it I didn't have a sub-weapon I liked that much, then I unlocked a nice shotgun that made it a lot easier after that.

It's doable as long as you're 26+, just know that it is hard and you have to commit a few hours to make progress in it. It also basically requires at least one player that has done it and knows the strategies, or you can try looking online and learning that yourself. Having someone who's done it really pays, though...

292723, every body involved with the PvP needs to be fired
Posted by celery77, Sun Oct-12-14 07:28 PM
I've tried. I've genuinely jumped in, tried to maintain a positive attitude, and it is like completing a 16 hour shift to even get through three consecutive games.

Where are the midrange encounters? Do midrange spaces not even exist? I know long range ones don't, the levels have made that clear. If you're foolish enough to show up without an Auto-Rifle, not much to do besides use your subweapon and pretend like your primary doesn't even exist. If you have the wrong sub-class, forget it, you are at a disadvantage from the moment you enter the game.

It's not just the balance issues, or the frequent encounters that end with one shot where you never see the enemy (and there's no kill cam), it's the fucking level design. Yeah, I've seen a few sniper spots where people are getting kills -- they're just camp spots. And then people start spawn camping, or at least it definitely feels like I'm dying to two people the moment I enter the game.

There are soooooo many problems with the PvP it's hard to no where to even begin -- bad levels, bad balance, bad game-modes which make groups semi-invincible, which really falls back a lot on the bad levels. Oh man ... I've sat down, fully built up in my mind, "This is the time I conquer multi" multiple times now, and I have to quit before I can even finish the third match.

People were mad about the loot? I'm mad about the unplayabley shitty multiplayer.
292724, I enjoy it more in the Iron Banner.
Posted by Nodima, Sun Oct-12-14 07:35 PM
my hand cannon is (semi) useful and just in general I can tell that the perks on my weapons are coming into effect.

I've never been a huge PVP guy in FPS games anyway, the last one I played with any real gusto was Killzone 2 because of the awesome mode shuffle mechanic they had (which every FPS afterward really should have stolen the way they stole CoD's XP system). Destiny's is fine enough, without the crucible bounties and stuff like Iron Banner I likely wouldn't ever touch it but for me it has little to do with the quality of the PVP. I just don't enjoy playing these types of games competitively, I lose my bearings too frequently without a 3rd person perspective.

I mean...at least in Halo...when you got that first bullet hit...you kinda had a chance to turn around, recognize and fight back and *maybe* could win that lil battle.

In Crucible...once that first bullet hits you, it's over. They got the drop...the end.

You have no idea where it's coming from and die instantly as soon as you even try to jump and look to see where it's coming from.

I like the game for PvE...that PvP...unless they adjust it, they can keep that shit.

I get that they don't wanna make it JUST LIKE halo...but got dammit, man...the reason people loved halo was because of the PvP. Social or competitive. It was just fun and had ABSOLUTE balance.

Crucible is just a game mode that ain't got it right now....

Again...hopefully they adjust that shit, 'cause it's broke as FUCK.
292759, i dunno, ive actually fallen in love with crucible
Posted by Aeon, Mon Oct-13-14 04:04 PM
i really struggled early on, as i usually do in PvP games, but after spending a lot of time in it (out of pure necessity due to having to kill 300 guardians or something with a special damage weapon and die as little as possible to clear a task for my exotic gun) i've figured out a lot and gotten the pace and strategy.

it does suck that some classes and sub classes are way more suited for PvP - nothing more frustrating than having that room clearing move titans do just shut down your entire fireteam in Control - but since having to spend so much time in crucible, I've ended up learning the maps which is a huge deal, and also learning how to read your admittedly shitty radar. theres a few maps, like the one on mars, where there are ostensibly some sniper positions but im just not that good at it - i hate that map and i end up camping, no shame.

i dont know how people use pulse rifles and scout rifles in crucible but some folks are beasts with it. gimme an auto rifle, my legendary shotgun and a machine gun and im ready to do damage, my K/D ratios have been climbing steadly in the past few weeks.

i also personally think they should make iron banner a permanent feature in crucible. iron banner's been extremely fun.

I mean I haven't played nearly as much as some of you guys posting here but ive been enjoying it. Taking it slow has probably helped me not burn out.

I just got to lvl 20 last week and just reupped my gold this weekend, so I'm starting the strikes. Lots of fun there, I love having a good team all shooting down the waves of enemies.

Haven't tried PvP, I'm kinda scared of getting smoked by not being leveled. I noticed how hard it can be just against higher ranked enemies, it just seemed like crucible would piss me off.

I'm a good shooter, hunter with the golden gun, fav weapon is probably scout rifle right now. It reminds me of my favorite halo weapon dmr. But I got the blue hand cannon so I've been using that, just don't like the lack of range but its like one shot on all those little pussy dregs and vandals.

Favorite thing so far is headshotting cabals and watching their helmets roll around. Especially those bitch ass phalanx.

just for clarity, level/weapon perks are only relevant in the Iron Banner event which seems like it's going to be a once-a-month kind of thing. Regular PVP matches are normalized. Your weapons and armor still have their perks but everyone has the same basic defense and the differences between one gun and another of the same type seem to be how they'd be in any other shooter; fire rate, damage, etc.

But they aren't as beefy as they are offline; the difference in damage from PVE to Iron Banner to Crucible for my hand cannon on head shots roughly breaks down to: 1,500 damage in PVE, 200 damage in Iron Banner and 80 damage in Crucible (making it practically useless since you can get way more shots off with an auto rifle).

292921, to the Warlocks addicted to self-res on the Raids: knock it off.
Posted by celery77, Thu Oct-23-14 12:06 AM
you know why generating Orbs of Light, even if you can't pick them up, is awesome? Because it allows your teammates to use THEIR super, which will generate Orbs of Light for YOU!

Just got stuck on the final raid boss with two Warlocks who were swearing that the self-res was the best thing for them to be using, because it allowed them to skip the 30 second cooldown for reviving when they died (my suggestion to stop dying so much seemed to fall on deaf ears). Finally talked one of them into switching to a build that dropped orbs, showed them how I could get my super (Titan domeshield) up while my last shield was still standing. And they saw how quickly this allowed them to get THEIR super, in one big reciprocal cycle.

Orbs: they're for everyone.

292936, think I'mma push it as a PvP weapon or not; got the Dead Orbit Dr. Nope...
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-24-14 04:07 PM
which is the 72 clip, high rate of fire auto with no impact (that kicks like a mule). The slower fire, higher impact auto seems waaaaay better, because you land every shot and can crit way better. The high rate of fire is good for really big bosses, but jeez sometimes I just wanna throw it at small enemies like psions or shanks..

But then Xur's Suros had the +2 agility and always on radar I believe? I've been using a handcannon with those two perks in PvP and it's kinda nuts how much it makes it feel more playable.
292946, It's worth the upgrade. I know some people don't think the slower RoF
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Sun Oct-26-14 01:55 PM
is good, but the 25% damage increase is worth it. And you can't get perfect stability without doing it anyways. Upgraded Suros in PvP is a headshot monster.
293037, yeah i did the upgrade (couldn't resist)

it took us, what, 3 or 4 tries? one of us didn't have any void weapons at all if I recall (and Aeon's Titan was level 26) so after about eight tries that ended almost immediately steve hipped us to the "stand at the top of the cave and just shoot from there until it's over" and even that took us two or three tries.

Finally hit level 28 after buying some vanguard gear though, would like to give the Nightfall a shot sometime soon, or even the raid.

293062, fuck crucible
Posted by osu_no_1, Fri Oct-31-14 06:20 AM
Maybe I just keep getting stuck with shit teams, but I keep having awful experiences with it

The only reason I tried it was because I had an exotic weapon bounty that said I had to get a +25 spread. Which would be easy if I had a decent team so that when I get 4 hits in on a dude and he kills me with his one shot exotic weapon every time, someone could follow up with a kill

But everyone wants to go do their own thing. Not a good experience. I abandoned the bounty and don't think I'll be going back any time soon
293067, abandoned the same bounty this morning + Im up to like 60 crucible marks
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-31-14 09:13 AM
which adds up to something like 30 losses at this point.

I was in a game last night where one dude on the opposite team was just crushing, then after matchmaking the next round that guy got switched on to mine. So I decided to follow him a bit, see what his strategy was. The strat? He crouched behind a high traffic wall, didn't move so he wouldn't trigger radar, then shotgunned people as they ran past. Bungie has managed to make effect PvP strategy go all the way back to "sit in one place, shoot people as they come by." It's like I'm playing Doom II all over again.

The more I think about it, the more I think it might be the radar that's really underlying a lot of it, too. The whole "sector v. precise location" thing really makes a huge difference from Halo, because you can't know exactly where the guy in what sector is located, so he can do bullshit stuff like sit there with a shotgun and just wait...

but yeah, you need the right gear, then once you have the right gear, you need to run super cheesy strats, and even if you do all that, you might not have the right build to maximize those strats etc. It's just a mess.
293073, that is exactly it.....i LOATHE that radar for that exact reason

293077, The Invective bounty is actually easier than the rest.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Fri Oct-31-14 01:18 PM
At first I really hated Crucible too. I thought something was wrong because it felt like I was getting instantly killed while it took me forever to take someone down, but I had to honestly just keep playing until I got better. I probably float around a 2.0 K/D ratio now. The biggest thing is just learning the maps and how to use the map and vision to your advantage. I also happen to just play Control now because there's an objective and it makes people's moves predictable. Again, that just comes with time and it eventually becomes intuitive.

If you think the Invective bounty is hard, you don't want to ever do the Thorn one. You need to earn 500 points in kills with void (5+ for each void kill you get, -2 for every time you get killed regardless of method). As much as I hated it at the time, it honestly made me a better and smarter player. And then there's a ridiculous strike that you also have to complete after.

If you're tried of playing with randoms, though, feel free to invite me on a fireteam and I'll help out.
293079, been told the exact same thing by a dude on my friend's list
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-31-14 02:04 PM
Been had that bounty for nearly a month, even had it all the way up to +20 at one point, before two bad rounds completely wiped that out.

I'm just not a camper, never been able to stand in one place and poach kills because of surprise. If that's how the game wants me to play (which it seems like it does), it sucks. I play all kinds of multi -- Halo, CoD, BF, Titanfall, etc. and so on and I have always been able to adapt and live in the top three. This one is sooooo not fun, though, I can barely stick with it to grind Crucible marks....
293082, Yahp! Invective bounty ain't give me much trouble compared to others

293085, I'm sure it helps to have better weapons
Posted by osu_no_1, Fri Oct-31-14 04:40 PM
I'm good on it for a while until I get a purple main and special. Seriously at least 4 hits to get a kill and 29-30 dudes just spray their auto rifle in my general direction and it's over. Head to head is not fair at all. It's all about getting the drop and the sector radar is lame. I'm on at weird times too and so I can't keep doing it. I was getting so pissed I was shouting at the TV and then my wife gets mad and it's all bad. Gotta give it up for a while and build my stock up.
293086, more to the point ---> lots of weapons (+ subclasses) are just useless
Posted by celery77, Fri Oct-31-14 05:41 PM
You need stability, range, and rate of fire. So Suros Regime? (Which you can HEAR being fired all over the place?) It's dominant -- amazing stability, amazing range, and it STILL keeps the autofire from the hip.

On the other hand, equipping scout rifles is suicidal. The high rate of fire, high kick auto rifle will never work for anything. If your shotgun doesn't have a generous range attribute, you'll probably die to someone with a better range shotgun.

And then even when you track someone on radar, switch to shotgun at the right range, and fire a clean headshot from three feet, it won't matter because that person is a bladedancer and will walk right through it to kill you in one hit. And don't even get me started on the ridiculousness of having 18 different grenades, ONE of which is stupidly superior to all 17 others.

I mean, it's ambitious to let you PvP with your exact, very divergent character build, but that's exactly why it should be no surprise there's major balance issues to be ironed out as a result. And that's without critiquing map design or the radar (which is ever-present, even when sighted, on SOME guns). It really just makes me even more excited for the Master Chief Collection...
293111, man I always figured the good scouts would fire from hip
Posted by osu_no_1, Sun Nov-02-14 09:18 AM
Like I imagined they would be like the dmr from halo

No?

That sucks if not because it's impossible to hit at close range when scoped

And I loved the dmr, that was my favorite weapon ever

You're right, a lot of balance issues with the pvp
293089, nope Super Good Advice is a stupid easy Energy farm.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Oct-31-14 07:20 PM
since it was the first gun I picked, when I don't like my other options I take that one. You just have to raid chests for the initial drop which is a good excuse to farm Relic Iron, then wait for Xur on the weekends to get the gun piece, then kill 500 enemies with a machine gun which you can do at the Vex/Cabal warren (where you also farm hella Relic Iron) right off the launch pad of Mars Patrol with just two or three Heavy Weapon caches, and then you have the gun.

293096, I like Super Good Advice; when you get ammo return, it's a room clearer
Posted by celery77, Sat Nov-01-14 10:07 AM
it's pretty pedestrian up until you get the ammo return perk, but once you get that? You're hitting with virtually 100% of ammo used, so if you just use it specifically in sections where you are facing lots of enemies at a close range, it's super effective. I crush Hive Wizards with it (doesn't matter if they dodge my rounds, those get returned, I just re-adjust my aim while still firing), I sweep waves of Fallen or Vex. It's not great on bosses, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have utility.

it almost sucks that xur is selling it cause now everybody's going to have it.

293107, i would say yeah, i wouldnt want to have to choose. theyre both awesome
Posted by Aeon, Sun Nov-02-14 03:24 AM
ice breaker is tougher for me to use in PvP cause the recoil is so crazy. in PvE missions its great, i was doing 11000 damage per critical hit on Atheon in (normal) vault of glass with it. much better when enemy movement is predictable, and no reload feature is beautiful, though it charges slow

i think P&T is more of a PvP rifle. active radar and cloaking are killers in big maps like on the first light and bastion.

293191, man this game is so stingy with giving out good guns
Posted by liveguy, Wed Nov-05-14 03:08 PM
It's been like 4 times, I get a legendary engram for special weapons and when I take it to the Rahool...that shit converts into ascendent energy.

The times I have gotten an actual special weapon from a purple drop, it's a damn fusion rifle and I don't even use those.

I have YET to get a legendary engram for primary.

It's bad enough just getting a purple is rare as is, and then to get cheated out of a weapon and given some BS I don't need....UGH!

I know its random (so they say), but people just given Suros and legendary primaries just for playing crucible, and cats that put in DAYS worth of playing time, get ascendents for upgrades on weapons you don't even have yet....lol smh

I will prolly be playing a LOT more of MCC once that drops next week.

This dangling carrot on a stick is wearing on me now.
293192, purchase them if they don't drop
Posted by Paps_Smear, Wed Nov-05-14 03:22 PM
I learned with this game don't depend on anything to drop. You're better off spending the vanguard or crucible marks on legendary items you need.

Strange coin is easy to come by, so no reason to not have an exotic primary. You can only equip one exotic armor and one exotic weapon. Wait until you see a good one when Xur has it for sale on the weekend and just buy it.

I do feel you on the MCC though. I'll prob put destiny away until the dlc drops.
293194, I have two exotic snipers PnT and Icebreaker
Posted by liveguy, Wed Nov-05-14 03:49 PM
both purchased from Xur....

I recognize now I need to just buy, but it's just wild how this game is so stingy with legendary primary guns in general....

Put in 3+ Days of time on this thing and haven't gotten one legendary primary drop? Not one?! Geez!

You get that purp drop and it's a special, so you're like "hell yeah"..then when you turn it in...it's energy or a gun type you don't use.

Cruel damn joke!

All good...but just annoying.

I'm almost at 3 dead orbit, so once i get to 120 crucible marks, I can cop an auto rifle from dead orbit.

I just cracked 28 on my titan, finally, so I need to hit the 9 coin weekly on that character and 6 coin on my Warlock character.
293198, there ARE fixed drops like rep rank + weekly nightfall
Posted by celery77, Wed Nov-05-14 04:30 PM
if it wasn't for those, I wouldn't have any purples. Everyone I talk to, though, always forgets about rep levels. Before I ever put a faction on, I got my Vanguard rank to level 9. You sometimes get armor, sometimes not for your class, but that's also the same reason I went immediately from 20 to 25 with my Warlock alt, because I had a storage locker of gear waiting.

I finally switched to Future War Cult, because I like their guns, but instead of just going to lvl 3 and moving on, I've got to 4, working to 5, because you get a purple from their set every timee (and I would *really* prefer to just unlock instead of earning Crucible marks).

But yeah, rank and Nightfalls is how I got ALL my non-Raid Legendary guns. I have only used Vanguard marks on heavy, use Xur and the fixed unlocks for all other gear.
293228, I love FWC guns
Posted by ACRG, Thu Nov-06-14 09:38 PM
293230, I think New Monarchy has the best weapons. I only do factions for
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Fri Nov-07-14 08:12 AM
the shaders now. I have so many exotics and legendaries that I don't really want or need the guns from factions. The guns from the raid are typically better than anything those guys sell as well.

Vision of Confluence is the best scout rifle in the game due to its stability and a large magazine. And most importantly it does solar damage, which is amazing for a primary.

Praedyth's Revenge is the best sniper that isn't Icebreaker or Patience and Time.

With enough exotics and raid weapons, you probably won't care about faction weapons anymore either.
293233, yup, but I keep other weapons for element damage on weekly / nightfalls
Posted by celery77, Fri Nov-07-14 10:25 AM
I have a void and arc shotgun, then I have a solar sniper and fusion rifle (based on what I need). I keep different primaries mainly because switching them around keeps the game fresh. Heavies are a little trickier, because I have one rocket launcher that's just my favorite, period, but just last night I got the Raid machine gun, and that thing seems pretty amazing, might actually replace my rocket launcher once it's fully leveled.

But yeah -- at first you feel like purples are impossible to get, then once you get your first one (which I did via Vanguard rank), you start getting a fairly steady stream after that (as long as you're doing weekly challenges like the weekly strike, weekly nightfall, and Raid).

A dude in my party unlocked that Raid scout rifle the other night and sheeeeeeeit I'mma keep whooping Aetheon until that thing drops for me...

Also got the Comedian shotgun randomly and purchased "Truth" from xur.

My warlock is happy.

although I can't recall any other game that has significantly changed the layout of their PvP maps post-release. I mean, I'm sure there's game data in plenty which would reveal imbalances, but it seems surprising to still be tweaking that content two months in.
293455, wait..they "accidently" nerfed all exotics in this patch?

Posted by Nodima, Tue Nov-18-14 04:02 AM
Finally got Icebreaker up to full potential this afternoon, and I was already having more trouble with it than I'd had any previous weekly strike, but today even though I got to the final encounter on my own I just felt helpless. It took me a half hour to get there and it was by the skin of my teeth. I used to be able to do these things in 20-25 minutes with smart play, 10-20 with a well-equipped friend.

although I beat Aetheon on level 30 after the patch took effect last night, using Raid everything in my weapon set, so it doesn't seem exactly game-breaking as of yet.

And yeah, all y'all Icebreaker solo cheese artists might have to find some friends to do missions with. I believe in you guys, there's a million and one other ways to cheese, especially with other players in your Fireteam.

293539, You should never be able to solo that type of stuff anyway
Posted by Paps_Smear, Fri Nov-21-14 02:21 PM
Maybe I'm old school but when it comes to games that promote team work you should never be able to do a high level strike (dungeon), or a raid by yourself.

If you massively out level it and its older content (from a previous expansion) then yes that's fine. But on current content its just bad design to have one person able to do something that should be considered hard end game material.

293537, Xur can go kick fucking rocks, man
Posted by celery77, Fri Nov-21-14 10:19 AM
seems pretty obvious to me Bungie is intentionally trying to force players to find ways to get Exotic Helmets besides buying them from Xur.

For five weeks now, the only thing I've needed to reach level 30 is an Exotic (or Raid) helmet. Three of those five weeks, Xur has been selling the same chest. At least he broke out the arm pieces today that I've wanted just for the perks, so I bought that. And yeah, I know, "Why don't you buy the Engram?" Prolly cuz I've bought the Engram twice now, got two Hunter helmets which I immediately scrapped because I don't have a Hunter.

So I need to complete the Hard Raid (level 30), which actually I *did* last week, got a Legendary spaceship and some Ascendant material for my effort. I'm trying to get it done this week, but man finding six dudes ready to suffer that much isn't easy, all it takes is one guy going, "Jeez this is hard guys! I'm gonna go play something else..."

Anyway ... I still like this game, but I'm calling shenanigans on the way they've starved the supply of helmets. I just want level 30 before DLC drops, but they've been stringing me along for over a month on the hunt for that helmet at this point...

I finally have an alt now ready to run the 28, too, but more than anything I want to suffer thru the level 30 (we only did 28 last time, btw, I caught that reply above), but man ... last night the dude that wrangled everyone together on the 30 was the one who quit inside an hour, too, cuz it was "too hard." Sigh....

But yeah, if I find some Raiders over the weekend, I'll shoot an invite.
293542, I can help you guys out with my 30 if you need.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Fri Nov-21-14 03:07 PM
Probably going to need at least 2 more 30s besides me if you want to make it past the gatekeeper section, though.
293545, I *almost* did Aetheon with 3x30, 2x29, 1x28
Posted by celery77, Fri Nov-21-14 03:51 PM
But after trying for around 2h (and coming suuuuper close, denied by glitches at times) the 28 had to log off, we picked up another 30, and were done in two tries.

Supposedly two of my regular group will hit 30 soon and we're gonna try again, although personally I felt like my 29 was pretty steady (although I do have 1433 defense + 300 damage on every weapon type)

But yeah, if you're XB1...
293543, I still haven't done the raid period, it'd be nice to join.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Nov-21-14 03:29 PM
I finally hit 29 the other day but unless I stumble into some boots or gloves I know there's no way I'm hitting 30 without taking a shot at raid drops. All my local friends have basically dropped the game over the past two weeks so its been a real bitch getting the heroic/nightfall strikes done and the raid is totally off my radar.

or AT THE LEAST give like 2 or 5 of Spinmetal, Relic Iron, Helium or Spirit Bloom after completing Crucible matches instead of getting absolutely nothing.
293693, if anyone wants some Plasteel Plating (Titan armor shards), lemme know
Posted by celery77, Wed Nov-26-14 10:16 AM
I have over 1200 of those things now. I would gladly trade like 100 of them for juts 5 of any material I want. Over 400 weapon shards now, but at least those can transfer between characters because they're not class specific.

But yeah, they need to fix the material farming. I'm out of everything right now and I have an item I'm upgrading for every type of material, too. I actually have MORE Ascendant energy than I do any of the stupid blooms or irons or metals or whatever.

293725, for relic iron just do Patrol and go to that Vex/Cabal battleground
Posted by Nodima, Mon Dec-01-14 12:07 AM
straight ahead from the spawn point. you can run a loop that basically goes inside and around the base, out to the right through the barracks, a right down into the garage, back out across the way into the cave and then loop out through the middle of the field, run back towards the base and do the loop again. You're guaranteed to spawn several relic iron a minute in chests while constantly facing a team of Cabal and then a team of Vex with each major turn through the area.

There's a similar route for spin metal if you patrol to the start of the Devil's Lair strike then go in a circle along the left side of the arena to the right and back again.

1.1 : The one about Exotics. And the Raid!

Today's patch includes the long-awaited arrival of Exotics weapon buffs, additional acquisition paths for destination upgrade materials, along with additional changes to exotic gear node upgrading in preparation for the soon-to-be-released expansion, The Dark Below. We're also correcting issues induced by our more recent update to the Raid.

Weapons
Exotics
Exotic Weapons are designed to look, feel, and sound overpowered. At the same time, they are not supposed to break the balance of the game. We hope these weapons challenge the way players think about their loadouts. Exotics will be a constant work in-progress!

General
In preparation for the Dark Below, Exotic Armor and Weapons no longer require Ascendant Materials to upgrade
The final upgrade node of all Exotic Gear will require an Exotic Shard

Exotic Shards can be obtained by one of the following means:
Dismantling unwanted Exotics
Purchased from Xur for 7 Strange Coins

Exotics now start at a higher base Attack value and have a narrowed upgrade range to compensate

Thorn
Projectiles now briefly highlight targets on impact
Mark of the Devourer DoT (damage-over-time) upgrade increased against PvE enemy targets
Reload Speed increased
Magazine Size increased
Ammo inventory size increased
Stability and Weapon Handling increased

Bad Juju
Magazine Size increased to 8 bursts (was 5)
Ammo inventory size increased
String of Curses now also decreases the cooldown of your Super on kill
Adjusted effects to not block first person reticle

Hard Light
Stability increased
Perfect Balance upgrade replaced by Fitted Stock (increases maximum possible weapon Stability)

Suros Regime
Lowered total damage at the end of the mag on SUROS Regime upgrade to be more in line with the Glass Half Full perk on Legendary Auto Rifles

Monte Carlo
Stability increased
Range slightly decreased
Monte Carlo Method upgrade now also has a chance to fully charge melee ability on kill

MIDA Multi-Tool
MIDA rounds now have increased knockback against targets in both PvE and PvP

Hawkmoon
Send It upgrade (which was redundant) replaced by Speed Reload

Red Death
Rate of Fire increased slightly, but Burst Damage reduced to compensate

Plan C
Weapon Handling speed increased
Player Speed increased while Plan C is in hand

Pocket Infinity
Speed Reload upgrade replaced by Extended Clip which allows the option to increase magazine size (5 bursts)

Vex Mythoclast
Attack Power increased to 323 (from 300)
Base Damage increased, fixing bug we introduced in previous patch
Enhanced Battery upgrade by Extended Mag (this change still allows for a significant upgrade to Magazine Size, but less than before)
Invective
Reload Speed increased significantly, auto fires slightly slower

Ice Breaker
Send It upgrade replaced by Lightweight (which was redundant as Icebreaker already had maximum range)
New effects for enemies killed by Ice Breaker upgrade

Patience and Time
Snapshot upgrade replaced by Custom Optics (provides a lower zoom option)

Super Good Advice
Stability increased

Truth
Magazine Size increased to 3 (was 1)

Activities
Raid
Fixed an issue we introduced in a previous patch, in which Atheon did not correctly send 3 players through the time gates
Fixed an exploit where the Templar could be forced off its platform
Daily Heroic Story
Destination Materials now drop from completing the Daily Heroic
Bounties
Removed the ‘Relic Hunter’ Bounty
Destination Materials now drop from completing the Daily Patrol Bounty

Vendors
Reduced Cryptarch reputation gain from Engrams, but reputation reward packages now have an increased chance for Legendary Engrams
Players will now be able to use Vanguard Marks and Crucible Marks to purchase Spinmetal, Relic Iron, Spirit Bloom, and Helium Filaments from the Vanguard and Crucible Quartermasters in the Tower
Xur now sells a new material, Exotic Shards, to upgrade the final node of Exotics for 7 Strange Coins
Faction Class Items (ex: FWC Cloak, Dead Orbit Mark, etc.) are now replaced by Faction Emblems in the rank-up reward packages from Faction Vendors

Technical
Networking fixes, which should reduce the instance of the Bee family of KTOs
Fixed an issue in which using Xbox One party chat induced a slower frame rate
293735, it's christmas: 20 materials for 10 marks
Posted by liveguy, Mon Dec-01-14 02:32 PM
And I got MAD marks.

200 vanguard and I do level 24 strikes all the time getting NO marks cause I'm maxed out.

This is the best part of the patch to me.

No more wasting time farming if I don't wanna.
293736, farming should not be necessary
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Dec-01-14 03:05 PM
I think they should remove the vanguard cap though

and you should be able to get to 30 without needing randomly dropped raid gear. it's bizarre that it's up to chance if you can actually reach the highest level. not everyone has time to do the raids 50 times a week.

edit - forgot, there's IB gear too, but that means a ton of PVP and I'm not into it. basically, I'm bitching bc I haven't had a raid gear drop yet.

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
293737, agreed on all points.

>I think they should remove the vanguard cap though

If there was no cap I would have like 800 Vanguard marks at least.

>not everyone has time to do the raids 50 times a week.

lol...hell yeah..they don't!

Overall I dig the adjustments on paper...haven't played yet since I'm at work, but after the gym later...it's on!

*edit...

Bullshit.
293754, I'm not proud of how I completed the level 30 Raid; randos + checkpoints
Posted by celery77, Mon Dec-01-14 09:53 PM
just got into random Raid groups with a bunch of power players, checkpointed into the key loot spots, gulped up the gear, i.e. I've beaten the 30 Raid twice, but I've never completed the Vex Conflux sacrifice or the double shield part right before Aetheon, only cheesed the Templar off the cliff when I did it. Now that I'm a 30, and two of my normal Raid group is 30, I'd like to be able to go through it legit, but yeah I really wanted 30 before the DLC and it seemed like the only way to do it was to latch onto power Raiders and have them carry me. Now that I'm 30, I hope I can pay the favor back to some players, but yeah ... thank GOD my drops have come through. I wish I had some sort of explanation, but the Raid Gods have just treated me good -- second time on the 30 Raid I got Fatebringer, the Vex Mythoclast, AND the Raid helmet. Had to latch onto two different groups at two different checkpoints, but I got it done.
293758, DOOD...pay it forward!
Posted by liveguy, Tue Dec-02-14 02:14 AM
Me and RJCC just cracked 29.

We rocked out on weekly strike for 9 coin with ProdigalReality...

I'm down to try the raid on hard from the beginning on tomorrows reset.

Got two other 29's ready to rumble just in case, but if you have 2 other 30's down, we can bring them in to do this.

Hard raid prolly a bitch tho cause normal is hard as fuck!
293762, yeah, sorry I forgot to add your GT, will do; I'm usually on after 6 PST
Posted by celery77, Tue Dec-02-14 10:24 AM
I'll be on tonight doing the Nightfall first thing, then after that there's usually people in my friends list ready to Raid. Last week I had the Normal Raid wrapped up on Tuesday night. Took me a while to get the 30 Raid, but now that two guys I usually play with are 30s, hopefully it will happen quicker.

Feel free to shoot me Raid invites if you're ready to run. Once I'm done with the Nightfall, the rest of the week is usually just running bounties to get XP on weapons. I'm happy to help where I can.
293765, cool

I need to nightfall tonight myself.

Nexus strike shouldn't be too bad.
293768, btw if you're gonna lvl 30 Raid, you NEED 300 guns as a 29
Posted by celery77, Tue Dec-02-14 04:22 PM
Being a 29 on the 30 just sucks by itself, because you die FAST. But if you don't havee 300 guns? You'll need at least a few 30s to carry you through...

293739, completely understand that mindest...
Posted by liveguy, Mon Dec-01-14 04:10 PM
It's been 3 months of the same ole same ole....but it's a start.

Hopefully once they drop the DLC, it'll be that much better.

I don't doubt it will...but XB1 only getting one new strike still pisses me off a bit.
293740, I don't even mind repeating too much
Posted by Rjcc, Mon Dec-01-14 04:42 PM
the action is still fun, but there has to be more

nightfall is a broken system. everyone ends up cheesing it every week because there's really no other way to beat it at times. shooting a boss from outside the doorway because they have an unbeatable advantage is not a game. but you gotta do it to get upgrades soooo

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
293753, huh, some of this doesn't make sense to me -- Destination Materials?
Posted by celery77, Mon Dec-01-14 09:48 PM
what are those? I guess I'll find out... and do my existing Exotics get tweaked, or is it only Exotics I earn going forward? And how do I get an Exotic Shard?

but I made level 30 on the weekend anyway so everything is gravy going forward. I'm just grinding on Fatebringer (yeah, Arc damage primary handcannon -- I got it) to get it to 300, then I'll max out Aetheon's Epilogue for the Void primary

...

keep that Vex Mythoclast just waiting in the wings then (YEAH I GOT IT!), cuz fuck man leveling Exotic weapons kinda sucks, and I already have a maxed out Solar primary (Vision of Confluence aka King Gun).

So I'm stoked being 30 (with 3 maxed out pieces of Exotic armor and a head to toe Raid set) and I even have a bit of an itch to go berserk on my Warlock alt and get it roughly as powered out so I can double all weekly activities.

But yeah, this update STILL doesn't give me anything to do with my mountain of Plasteel Plating or Weapon Shards, so that's a little disappointing. I'd already taken to just using Vanguard Marks to buy armor to break into shards...
293756, Destination Materials aka upgrade materials (planet to planet/destination)

Spinmetal, Relic Iron, etc.....
293755, oh and I'm stoked they fixed the Templar fight -- IT'S NOT HARD, Y'ALL!!
Posted by celery77, Mon Dec-01-14 09:59 PM
not only is it not hard, it's one of the most enjoyable teamwork spots in the Raid. You need a shield driver that does a good job of communicating the shield status and you need a team that has designated cover spots on the Oracle spawns and covers them well. You should already have Oracle cover spots from the previous encounter, just carry those over, you just gotta compensate for the Shield carrier. Every time I've done the Templar straight up, it's only taken a few tries (although I have heard stories or played with dudes that have really weird, defeatist strategies that involves lots of cleaning, when if you're playing well you shouldn't get dirty during that fight at all).

But yeah, I've liked all their Raid fixes. I've been whining about cheesing the Templar (for two pieces of Ascendant Material, sheesh) in every Raid I'm in. I just want to have fun running it, I can easily skip a single, once a week Ascendant Material chest in exchange for a little more challenge...

293790, Are you wearing a faction class item?
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Thu Dec-04-14 07:44 AM
If you are, your experience is going to them instead. When you wear a faction item (Dead Orbit, New Monarchy, Future War Cult), both vanguard and crucible bounties all go to them. Doing this in the beginning is probably the best if you play both PvE and PvP because it's all pooling into one thing.

If you are wearing a non-faction class item, Vanguard bounties will be applied to the Vanguard. Crucible matches and bounties will be applied to Crucible.

Remember that marks are capped at 200, so spend them. Otherwise you've not been getting new marks to spend.

You get ascendant materials (shards and energy) from doing public events, and the most consistent way way (aside from raiding) is to do the daily heroics every day, although I think it's the level 27 and 28 heroics and not the 26 that gives out ascendant materials. You can also get ascendant shards and energy by dismantling legendary armor and weapons, respectively.

I'm not sure

Looks like it's my vanguard rank is 0
But I have 1446 of 1500 to get to 1

I've been doing every thing but my rank is stuck at 1446

293793, If your rank is "stuck," then you're wearing a faction mark/armband/cape

You're probably wearing the equippable items you can buy for Glimmer from New Monarchy, Dead Orbit, or Future War Cult -- a "mark" (or buttcape) for Titans, an armband of some kind for Warlocks, or a cape for Hunters. When you equip one of those, you will level their reputation (if you check in with their vendor, you will see a reputation wheel showing the same point breakdown as the Vanguard vendor shows). You get reputation from tons of stuff, as small as completing Patrol missions (every time you complete one, you should see a reputation wheel appear on the mid-left of the screen showing a "+10" on a reputation wheel). If you're at 1446/1500, you should be able to equip a Vanguard item and just knock off six Patrol missions really fast and you'd be at Level 1 (although that doesn't get you anything at that point, except maybe access to an Emblem I would strongly discourage you from buying; you need Level 2 for armor, Level 3 for weapons.)

As far as Ascendant Energy / Shards, the most consistent way to earn those is on the Daily Heroic missions. That mission always defaults to Level 22 when you select it, which doesn't give you anything (except XP and marks I think?). What you need to do is select the Daily Heroic, then adjust the difficulty upwards (Level 26 gives +1 Ascendant Material, Level 28 gives +2 Ascendant Material). The other most consistent way is to find Public Events. Every day, if you complete a Public Event with a Gold Rating, you will get a package at the Postmaster in the Tower frequently containing an Ascendant Material (although sometimes it's a Strange Coin or Mote of Light, most often Ascendant though). There is also a very high drop rate from Public Events for completing the Bounty with a gold rating, so often you will get two materials -- one for completing it, then another in the tower in your package. There are good websites that will show you when/where Public Events are likely to happen, too. Personally I check Planetdestiny.com which has a ticker on the right, although I think there are like Android apps, too, which will show you the same information.

Aside from that, if you're at Level 26, you are ready to Raid, and if you put in work on the Raid on a weekly basis, you will start climbing in level via new armor or new Ascendant material. And once you're at 28, you can generally solo the Daily Heroic, which makes Ascendant material farming even easier. It's the grind from 29 to 30 that proves really back-breaking once you get there, because there's a very short list of equippable items that even fit the bill...
293795, oh snap I just checked my cloak went to war cult
Posted by JAESCOTT777, Thu Dec-04-14 10:11 AM
293797, that's not terrible, every time you get a rep rank >2 you get a package
Posted by celery77, Thu Dec-04-14 10:22 AM
so I have my Future War Cult at Rank 5 I think, because I wanted the package you get from unlocking Rank 3,4,5 (although I ended up disappointed with those, because I wanted items but they kept giving me +1 Ascendant Material and +1 Strange Coin, except for one level where I got a FWC Fusion Rifle). I have New Monarchy at Rank 4 hoping for items, too, but rank 3 + 4 gave me Ascendant Material and coins.

My Vanguard Rank is like 12 or 13, because I got lots of nice equipment from them (had 3 out of 4 purple Warlock pieces just by playing my Titan that way, made leveling my Warlock alt a lot easier). But yeah, rep rank is a grind, as it usually takes 5-7 days or so to get one rank with very directed play at that goal, but you do get good shit from it, so at least that's worth it.
293794, this Game Informer article details some tweaks coming in the DLC (link)

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/12/03/stare-into-the-dark-below-new-details-on-the-destiny-expansion.aspx?PostPageIndex=1

Some of them seem fairly significant, like allowing you to upgrade an Exotic piece of armor with Xur so that it will fit with the level cap jump from 30 to 32 in the expansion. I'm glad I found out, because I'm going to start material hoarding to be able to do that with my three different yellow armor pieces right away, and it looks like buying Exotic Shards for 7 Strange Coin off Xur will be the easiest way (sure wish they would give me Exotic Shards for the 4 or 5 non-class or duplicate Exotic armors I've scrapped in the past, though...). Also seems like they're making reputation rank levels count for something more (Commendations?) although it's not clear to me exactly how that economy is going to work from this write up.

Aside from that, good preview of the content for those as curious as me.
293796, Xur is only selling Ex Shards??

...i was hoping i could get ascendent from him as well ...ive been having bad luck only getting energies lately so i'd gladly pay for shards
293798, maaan, I *wish* I had an Energy hoard
Posted by celery77, Thu Dec-04-14 10:26 AM
although that Exotic tweak came at the perfect time, because I was hoarding Energy to be able to max out Fatebringer (the primary Raid handcannon with Arc damage) and Aetheon's Epilogue (Raid auto rifle with Void) and that was going to be my whole stash, THEN I got the Vex Mythoclast and I had to decide how I was going to break up those materials. But they tweaked it so all I need is an Exotic Shard for Vex Mythoclast, and that's super doable, so I'm pretty pleased with that.

And I just had to burn a TON of Ascendant Material on my Warlock alt, in part to get it Raid-ready, but also because I'm drowning in that stuff. If you start doing the Raid on a regular basis, in particular the Hard one, the Shards start really stacking up...

Started the other two classes, 26 with a Hunter and 15 with a Warlock. That's been fun, I'm kind of just hunting the trophies for maxing a class on those. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to do the raid though a couple of my friends that fell off say they're planning to get the expansion so having a base of us three could make it easier to find a game.

I do feel way less productive with my Titan than I was last month though. Strange coins are such a rarity for me since most people I know that play (mainly Aeon and Steve lol) have ran the weeklies with all three of their characters before I even login!

obscene amounts of hours doing is worth it to me. i bought the expansion pass so i'll be ready for house of wolves when that drops too.

so far it's not amazing but i like it. the new missions are cool, can get intense cause the hive enemies are very much run up on you and beat you to death, no snipers or anything, and they're all high level missions with hordes.

i haven't tried the raid yet but i just finished the new vex strike and it was fun, lots of crucible stuff i didn't (probably wont) try, but best of all there's new weapons and armor, so the character development and loadout features that make the game shine are still intact.

My friends are saying I'm being too harsh & they're stanning for the game. Then again, they all pre-ordered the dlc w/the initial purchase. One of my friends & his brother got level 23 the first night. They've been waiting all week after doing everything on Tuesday for Xur on Friday & getting screwed on their weapons they already maxed out.
293926, yo the switch-up of the existing item caps is really pretty harsh
Posted by celery77, Wed Dec-10-14 10:13 AM
I completed the Pocket Infinity (exotic Fusion Rifle) bounty over the weekend, but I knew the new economy was coming on Tuesday, so I didn't cash the bounty, I just left it in my inventory. Logged on yesterday, first thing I did was run to cash in that bounty, got my brand new Pocket Infinity with a bumped up damage cap AND base damage.

My new base damage? 302.

So I showed my Pocket Infinity to my one buddy who's had it for a while, loves it, uses it all the time, has it maxed out, etc. I haven't even put a drop of XP on my gun and I already have a higher damage than his. AND now he's going to have to apparently wait until the specific weekend when Xur puts Pocket Infinity up for trade-in just so he can go back to re-leveling all that stuff he had prior.

That's pretty cold, Bungie. My buddy does nothing and in one DLC, his gun is kinda obsolete. Yeah, I don't have the perks, but you'd think *at least* they'd leave the base damage at like 294 or something. I wouldn't have complained. And man, putting XP on those Exotics is the worst...
293933, how I understood it....
Posted by liveguy, Wed Dec-10-14 12:21 PM
You can upgrade any of your exotics with Xur on any given weekend...

Just requires an exotic shard, and you get the new version and have to start from scratch on building the perks.

I didn't know you had to wait until Xur is offering an upgrade for that particular gun on a random weekend.

That would just be wrong.

Like on a weekend where Xur selling stuff I dont want and I have like 21 coins, I can use those to upgrade my fav Exotics instead.

293941, that's how I understood it, too, but the biggest junkie I run with said...

>I didn't know you had to wait until Xur is offering an upgrade
>for that particular gun on a random weekend.

I thought all you needed was an Exotic Shard, an Exotic Item, and something like 7k glimmer and you can do business with Xur. According to the guy I run with who can usually be counted on to know such things, Xur will be "selling something like 10-12 items upgrades," which makes some sense in that Bungie will be able to control the proliferation of high level Exotics, but otherwise sounds pretty lame. Like I want my No Backup Plan shoulders traded in stat. I thought I was gonna do that on Friday.

But I guess we'll see, seems like a real poke in the eye if they start micro-managing their new Exotic economy.
293969, well, you can trade them. I got those wings tho #SWAGBITCH

Posted by liveguy, Wed Dec-10-14 01:12 PM
Apparently it does exist in the game now....

Just not sure which ones.
293942, more or less; if they're not leveled, definitely worthless.
Posted by celery77, Wed Dec-10-14 04:58 PM
I have 300 damage weapons that I will be using for a while, but wew Legendaries start with a base of 272 and cap out higher. So that Crucible Scout Rifle I got in a drop a couple weeks ago, but haven't been able to get around to leveling yet? Yeah, the 248 base / 300 cap damage is already made redundant by the NEW Legendary Scout Rifle I'll be able to buy tonight if I want (you need a Commendation from rep rank to get it, but I'll have that with just a couple bounties). So that old Scout Rifle is really only useful as either decoration or shards.

Even my fully leveled Raid Armor is made redundant by the new purples. I got some new purple boots in some kind of drop yesterday, just the kind you get from the Vanguard vendor, and they already have a light cap of 33 and a higher defense cap. So those Raid boots were great for making me level 30, not great for making me anything else. From what I've picked up, now I'm on a grind to get to level 31 via Vanguard Armor so I can Raid better (a la the grind to 27/28), then I'm on a grind to get Raid gear to hit 32. Presumably all so my 32 will be ready to do the same process when the next DLC drops.

And yeah, if you're not 30 already, now you need the Vanguard Armor just to Nightfall (although that's sorta similar to the last cycle), and having done the new Strike twice last night (Nightfall, Weekly) I have to say it seems it's like designed to have you camp in one spot, take pot shots at enemies. Like literally the level design has safe camping spots for you to regen shields in order to be able to step out and get the Arc damage you need to get through. The visuals are great, but man, it was the definition of tedious gameplay to get through. I'm really eager to Raid now, because the Strike was just a chore, seemingly DESIGNED to be so at that...
293947, it's weird. Bungie made this really fun game

Ruin Wings (Exotic Gauntlet)
Holdfast Type I (Legendary Titan Boots)
Payback SOS (Legendary Auto Rifle)
Murmor (Legendary Fusion Rifle)
Radiant Shards
Ascendent Shards and Energies
Various Telemetries

I know some people have beef with Bungie... But I can't complain about this DLC at all... these weapons are CRAZY good... and this weekend I can take my Suros and Thunderlord to Xur and start taking them to the next level..

and IRON BANNER IS NEXT WEEK!!!!!

its a great time to be a guardian, and probably the most fun i've had in the game since launch..

293957, see, I've gotten good gear, I'm just sad my old stuff is redundant now
Posted by celery77, Thu Dec-11-14 03:04 PM
I liked my old purple guns. I had a whole arsenal that I would switch out and around depending on level and situation. I liked my armor. I had a way to go full discipline or full strength depending on the level, now I have to scrap all that. I have to invest time into stop-gap Vanguard armor pieces just to get me through the Raid, even though I just binged like crazy to get to lvl. 30 in the first place.

So yeah, I've gotten a pretty decent haul, too -- new Pocket Infinity, new Thunderlord, Murmur, a purple Pulse Rifle, a purple Scout Rifle, new purple boots, who knows what Xur will give me but I have plenty of currency to spend with him. I wrapped up leveling Aetheon's Epilogue so I'm running with my Vex Mythoclast for the first time now. It's just disappointing that in a day, everything I had before became obsolete. Only the Mythoclast carries over, but since they've already announced they'll be upgrading Exotics, it does feel a bit like a fool's errand to be leveling that when I'm going to trade it in for the upgrade first chance I get.

BUT

I'm still excited about the Raid and I'm hopeful Eris' next Quest will be a bit meatier than just a couple quick encounters on the Cosmodrome. So I'm not mad, but I'm not thrilled with all the replacement leveling I'll have to do.
293958, it's a grinders paradise
Posted by liveguy, Thu Dec-11-14 03:31 PM
and its starting to wear on me.

the game still plays fun, and that MurMur is beastly, but if it's like this where new DLC comes out, old has to be replaced and new grind begins, not sure how much longer I can tolerate being water-boarded. LOL!

They need to find a way to allow for upgrading your current gear that you like and making everything evolutionary and not just exotics.

When does the Division come out?
293959, it shouldnt really take that long to upgrade new gear...
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Thu Dec-11-14 03:37 PM
..most level 30s i know have an abundance of ascendant materials, coins and plenty of weapons they can dismantle for even more materials ...its guys like me who are still low 29's who have a longer grind ahead of us (at least to 31)

293961, nah, the 29 to 31 grind is identical, that's what's annoying
Posted by celery77, Thu Dec-11-14 04:16 PM
because I have a 29 Warlock alt that I didn't have the endurance to take through the Venus Hard Raid, but now I could get that character to level 31 just as fast as my 30 Titan, if I just earn Vanguard Marks and buy 3 pieces of Armor + an Exotic from Xur (which would take like two weeks, and only requires one commendation, that's all if I never got an improved purple drop, which actually now that I think of it I already did -- stashed a 33 Light Warlock helmet that my Titan unlocked, so that's two pieces of Armor (guaranteed less than 200 marks to get that) + 1 Exotic I need to get to 31 from 29). That's exactly what my Titan needs to do, too, because the Raid gear is obsolete and fully leveled Exotic armor confers no real bonuses.

The only difference is it's a bit easier to get my Titan through the 30 Nightfall, although I went through the 30 Nightfall with one 29 in the party, and that same guy would run my 29 through, too, I'm sure, if I asked, and Murmur would do most of the heavy lifting to get it done anyway.

So I mean it's cool that you'll hit 31 without doing the Venus Hard Raid (which is *hard* by the way), it's just disappointing to me, who was pretty driven to hit level 30 prior to the DLC, that all that grinding I just did is really for moot. Cheapens it a bit, is all...

It is nice being 30, though, did all the new content on Hard, excited to try the level 26 playlist soon, but who knows how much of that gear will last past Xur's arrival on Friday for me...

293975, so I heard the story missions weren't that neat. I disagree.
Posted by Nodima, Sat Dec-13-14 05:11 AM
granted I haven't done the raid as I said before but the one on the moon where you fight a huge rocket shooting shard at the end, with hallway maze of green poison rings that are easily avoidable, was pretty neat. I enjoyed doing it as a mission and enjoyed using it as a bounty harvest. It was a great challenge both times, though I sometimes wondered whether I only felt that way because it (and the other new "quests") was the first time I'd been completely unaware of what might be around the corner in Destiny for the first time since September.

Honestly not that bad, shorter encounters than Vault of Glass.

More team work involved in this one with how the raid felt. I'm still waiting for something other than kill adds like crazy.

I wish they'd just throw us in a room with a boss with a large health pool, no adds, and have each team member be responsible for something to help take him down. Something other than unloading ammo on him. Boss fight puzzle mechanics that made raid bosses from other games so epic.

I'd also want the classes to mean something. Like we need a Titan for this fight so their bubble can do this, or we need a hunter for their invisibility when this happens. Something that makes you have to utilize each class ability when the time is right.

Game is fun, just needs more variety. I still say they need to hire someone from blizzard to help them with raid and strike design.
294195, Raid experience from this weekend finally cured me of this game, I think
Posted by celery77, Mon Jan-05-15 06:52 PM
Got a group of guys together who were willing to make an honest attempt. Had fun working through the Thrall hordes, actually cleared it with the most teamwork I've ever managed and the final showdown was waaaaay more manageable when it's not just the two fastest guys standing on the last button.

Then we get to the bridge, spent about an hour trying to get across straight. 2 out of 6 players had never done it before, so they were learning and it was going well. A couple wipes on the learning curve, then we're getting up to speed. We ended up having some very clean runs that get disrupted by huge, lethal lag spikes, but everyone is keeping a good attitude. Finally one guy has to log off to get dinner, so we say, all right, let's just cheese it and cross the bridge. One spawn, a quick "everyone stand right here, then walk out and use snipers" later (like 3-4 minutes, in all seriousness), we're across the bridge and everyone has the drop.

So then the last guy leaves and our guide is telling us, "we can still beat Crota, it will only take a few minutes" because, well, that's how busted the new Raid is. If you just want gear, it's insanely easy to get gear. If what you want to do is play 6-person, competitive content, well ... good luck finding five other guys willing to do that.

So anyway, it's all just a big chore for gear at this point. The content is burnt for me. It took a looooong time to reach that point, so I won't bad mouth it too much, but unless they drastically and rather cruelly adjust the Crota Raid to prevent all the BS players are pulling, it's completely broken and wasted content. And all those players are going to be hard-mode Raiding before me, if I try to stick with it, because they've all gotten like 3-4x as many drops as me with roughly a quarter of the "work."
294196, I think cheesing is fine once you've done it a few times.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Mon Jan-05-15 07:39 PM
I have 3 characters, and after a certain point you just want to get it over with and knock it out of the way.

It is a huge problem, however, that a lot of people with full gear don't know the fights and have never beat it legit. I've had guys on my team that thought it was a glitch when Crota moved to the right because they always cheesed him.

I really hope they patch things and force people to play it legit. Remember when they fixed Templar and so many 30s didn't even know what to do?

294198, and the crazy part is the Templar wasn't even hard!
Posted by celery77, Mon Jan-05-15 10:35 PM
but yeah, the "power players" are just dudes that have worked the most exploits. They're not people I even want to play with. Just like I don't own an Icebreaker and don't really care, because its primary use is exploiting sniper locations with no ammo drops. I just don't like playing the game that way. I can use a regular sniper and ammo synthesis if I need, but I'm not "thrilled" about an item that's going to let me do that ALL THE TIME!

But yeah, I've done the bridge crossing legit once (during the first week) and twice more after that with cheese, because every group I've been in just wants to cheese after about 30 minutes of play. I dunno, that just isn't what's fun about the game to me... I really like the difficult content that takes a few hours and a supremely clean run to land. That's FUN! Just getting gear? Eh, that's just more crap to level and more materials to farm to do it... I want the armor for 32, but besides that I don't really care...
294199, I've had a love/hate relationship with this game
Posted by Paps_Smear, Tue Jan-06-15 08:42 AM
The gameplay is amazing and just feels right. Doing things with your friends is always fun. That's where it stops.

I keep saying Bungie needs to steal someone from Blizzard and learn what real content is. These raid designs are horrible. To people that have never experienced a well put together raid these ones may seem cool at first. The fact that I'm doing the same shit in the raid that I can do on a strike "Get flooded with adds and shoot boss" is inexcusable.

There is no reason to pick a certain type of guardian other than you like what powers they have. If you had one type of guardian in all six slots of the raid you could easily get through it. That should never happen in a "raid" of any type unless its extremely old content. I want to see more mechanics that involve actually having specific classes join you. Maybe they wouldn't have so many glitches for fights if you actually had to do something other than just waves of adds and boss.

Honestly in all my years of playing any mmo type game I've never seen boss glitches this bad.
294211, you can cheese the nightfall this week too...

294213, yeah, and Ice Breaker only makes it that much easier
Posted by celery77, Tue Jan-06-15 06:52 PM
I actually have yet to do a Nightfall Strike without using some kind of AI or map exploit to get past it. I don't really feel bad about that, since they eliminated checkpoints. I'd really just like to be able to do the RAID with a group willing to play for the game content rather than the drop.

I mean...I have it (lol)...

But most cats I play with missed it when Xur was selling it back in October....

They mad when they hear my buckshots.

I had one Guardian at the time at like 25 then, so grinding the hell outta that weekend to get it was a bitch, but I copped.

I missed that Gjallarhorn weekend and been waiting ever since, and still ain't got that shit yet.

Oh, but they got that Plan C on sale every other weekend!

UGH!

I hate this game....but I love it so....lol

I did get two Dragon Breaths tho....

One for my titan and one for my Warlock...both 31.

I hope they buff it soon, cause that Warlock solar burn grenade shit isnt cutting it and this is supposed to be this DLC Gjallarhorn.

Not yet, it aint....

Posted by Nodima, Mon Jan-12-15 04:07 PM
can't really say I *played* it since I died right near the beginning of every meaningful encounter and it was Hard so there were no revives, but I'm thankful for the trophies I never thought I'd get and the Vision of Confluence that seems way more damaging than my much stronger weapons thanks to the elemental damage.

Thanks for letting me tag along guys and sorry for not being more helpful. It was neat to see something different after so many months of the same content even if I experienced most of it through a spectator cam.

I've been playing a couple days a week for about a month after getting it all at christmas, only just got to run VOG with a group i found online friday night, tried to pretend i wasn't a noob the whole time.

I'm xbox one and only really get to play thursday or fridays right now, but like all day fridays, i'd love to find a consistent group to run stuff with because its way more enjoyable, but this post seemed to die down. I feel like I'd understand why if I played it more often.

man im terrible at crucible. im not even mad at it, but the only pvp shooters ive ever been good at are 'realistic' ones, i miss ghost recon. i got one of those bounties for the first time, but there's no way im ever gonna be able to complete one that has any kind of crucible task on it.

apparently house of wolves is Q2 now, which means not march. even as late to this party as i am i feel like that's too long. its just weird how they make it feel like they are keeping content from you when it doesn't really feel like there's enough variety as is. like i get that that queen bounties week was special and a long time ago and i missed it, and II will probably expand on it, but it seems stupid to just have an empty reef and not enough to do on my own if i wanted to. and like how at times certain match types just won't be on crucible, taking choice away from multiplayer feels weird.

I'll still raid for fun as running sword is the biggest thrill I get from the game. Aside from that, it'll be mostly Crucible and special events for me, however, as I really don't have much left to play for in terms of weapons and armor.

When is the Trials of Osiris event supposed to be?

Just stacking till Xur sells something worth buying.

I aint falling for the carrot dangle of playing for Gjallarhorn anymore...

If it ain't dropping in those 6 games, then I just ain't getting one till Xur sells it again, but at least I will be WELL prepared with coins once he does.
294611, it really doesn't get enough credit for how tight the controls are
Posted by celery77, Tue Feb-10-15 02:50 PM
like this is as good as FPS control/feel gets -- from the jumping (which is probably THE MOST fun, responsive, and game-opening jump controls ever in a FPS), to the guns (which are varied and all feel fun/different to shoot), to the supers and grenades (which are satisfying, useful, and strategic in every sub-class), down the sound design that re-enforces all those elements, and just the overall graphical polish and attention to detail in armor and guns on characters/classes.

Like yeah, the story is trash and the content is limited, but godDAMN did they knock the foundational elements of the game out of the park. Then all you gotta do is find a fun crew to run with, and you can play the same content for hours and hours and hours...
294614, pretty much

294616, I just never found that crew, or wanted to enjoy Destiny that way
Posted by Nodima, Tue Feb-10-15 05:39 PM
I've tried a couple times and it's been fun playing with groups, especially in the early going when real life friends were playing and we were figuring out strikes together. But they all fell off after finishing the 'story' missions and I just couldn't get invested in wearing a headset every time I wanted to do new content in the game. So Destiny even at the heights of my various addiction periods with it has been a podcast game, something to do while I'm listening to other stuff.

And even in that scenario it's been fantastic, but a couple weeks ago I got my Warlock up to level 29 and have my Hunter near that as well, and I think their gear can get them to level 30 if I ever get enough armor materials (I realize now how vital the loot cave really was for end game stuff, my Titan will NEVER hurt for armor materials, ever) but I'm no longer pining for Crota's End and I appreciate the Vision of Confluence from Vault of Glass but it hasn't been a game changer (in fact I've finally been using Bad JuJu a lot and really enjoying it, probably more so once the Pulse Rifles get yet ANOTHER buff in an upcoming patch) since I've never entered the Vault again.

But even playing Destiny almost the exact opposite of how it wants to be played - alone, on mute, doing the simplest bounties for all three characters, never in PVP, never doing the weekly heroic or nightfall strikes - I'm having a blast, and I have NEVER really been in love with FPS besides the Nintendo 64 Rareware games. It just feels better than any other game I've played perhaps ever, everything is just so damn right, tight and feel good.

the only thing that bothers me about the controls are those times a moving enemy drags your reticle, there should be a way to stop that and i look through the options every once in a while thinking ive missed it.

but yeah, they nailed so many aspects of design well, the sounds of everything, the feel of using weapons, the environments. like the sounds of the gorgons in the maze were stuck with me after, it fits so well with the change in style that one part of the game creates. And the disappearing platforms right after that with the skinny ledge, i was more immersed in a fear of falling than i am in certain real life heights situations.

its just slightly disappointing that there doesn't seem to be really even a little effort truly thrown to the story, or even just the lore. its like everything the game tells you in that sense makes you feel like you've missed something important, like coming in late to a movie. its not like halo was a great or original story, but it spawned stuff i truly enjoyed reading, and it feels like they expect the community to create stuff in that sense but there needs to be way more foundation. the fact that the idea of being a guardian, spreading the light and pushing out into the darkness, doesn't feel like one of the reasons to play this game is still a major flaw to me.

294811, actually it kinda sucks on the app.
Posted by Nodima, Fri Feb-27-15 07:13 PM
I don't know about the site but I tried it in the app and you have to move each item manually and it's several buttons, and since I got on the three character game I've just felt more comfortable swapping every weapon and universal item every time I change. It takes about 2 minutes in-game taking load times and such into account and I can't see it being any faster if I have to select item - manage item - move item then back out over and over instead of just mash X and move the cursor around the screen.

Weekly Heroic matchmaking is pretty awesome though, first time earning Strange Coins outside of daily event and engram rewards in a long time, bought a chest piece for my Hunter (I really can't tell if I'd rather use it, the helmet I've been using or the other helmet I'm slowly leveling though) and a couple exotic shards to finally finish off some upgrades. As I suspected I'm back into this game kinda heavy now; just wish they'd add matchmaking for the Nightfall too. After doing the Raid, I totally get why they don't just throw randoms into it, though they should figure out how to filter if a player has a mic connected maybe since that's the only major hurdle I see; I play Destiny as the ultimate podcast game but there's no way you could do Vault of Glass without mics (and I was barely alive the time I completed it lol) I can't imagine from what I've heard of Crota it'd be any easier.

they should have some kind of lobby system or something that a team trying to raid could open, and matchmaking would place you in a fireteam with a leader who'd still start it and could choose filter people or whatever.

294876, FLAWLESS RAIDER mo'fuckers!!!
Posted by celery77, Fri Mar-06-15 10:12 AM
(although the Achievement hasn't popped on my Xbox yet, three people in my Party got it so it will trickle through to me later. Not the first time I've had this happen to me, the 'beat a Raid with your whole clan' thing seriously had like a week long delay.)

Flawless Raid was fun as shit. My heart rate was UP making those jumps in Vault of Glass. I damn near PASSED OUT getting passed the Gorgons. Wiped a couple times getting everything in line on the Oracle / Confluxes, wiped a couple times cuz a teammate was using a rocket launcher for whatever reason. Ditched the rocket launcher, got reps in so we were up to game speed, and we went Flawless after the FIRST time we cleared the Oracles. I honestly wasn't expected it to go so smooth. Insanely fun. Hard to get 5 other players with a good attitude to work it, but earning that achievement was the most fun I've had with a game in a while.

Im terrible though, I was just wishing I was raiding.

It's crazy to me how that moment with the disappearing platforms is still probably the most visceral, immersive feeling I've gotten from this game the first time I did it, like it could legit freak someone with a fear of heights out. Having to start over cuz you screwed that up would be mind-blowingly frustrating.

Red Death is a two-shot crit hit kill in the Crucible if you land 2 clean bursts, and Bad Juju will take more. Three Little Words from the Crucible vendor has the same impact as Red Death and is also a 2 shot kill, and the sights on it are pretty good too (and you get Third Eye). The health regen on Red Death can come in handy once in a while in PvP firefights when engaging multiple enemies, although its best use is in the Crota hard mode fight where there is no health regen.
294995, Ah, I see. I did get it just to have it.
Posted by Nodima, Mon Mar-16-15 10:47 AM
I barely Crucible and that one time I did Vault of Glass with you guys is still the only Raid I've done; I have the Thorn bounty with my Titan AND my Warlock but doing any Crucible just frustrates me; I've done about 10 matches each and my Titan has 5/500 points, Warlock 12/500. Red Death did seem pretty nice (I used Up for Anything during random Crucible visits before) but I REALLY need a Void secondary weapon I think if I'm going to get anywhere with this bounty.

It sounds a little meaner, too.

Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Tue Mar-31-15 03:12 PM
If you're still playing by Fall 2015, you might get to enjoy it.

Hawkmoon had been my favorite PvP gun for some time, but recently I've been using just Thorn and The Last Word. I've gotten used to the sights and rate of fire on Thorn now, and now it just feels dirty to use. Last Word is great on small and/or aggressive maps. I used to not like Last Word because I tried to use the auto fire too frequently, but I've finally learned how to pace my shots.

I have a clip here of a team mostly using ARs, and the damage they were doing to me was pretty pathetic. There are a few cases where I would have easily died if they had been using decent weapons instead. I'm guessing the guy using the Epilogue was doing the Thorn bounty. But yeah, Oversoul Edict is basically a really good AR and should be the replacement for people who don't like the recent AR nerf.

legendary engram popped a Hard Light, my Warlock went from just having Heart of Praxic Fire chest to also having all four exotic helmets in about three weeks, finished the Invective bounty, got this Harm's Way machine gun that I can carry 300 bullets for with Praxic Fire that absolutely shreds on void burn missions. All my characters are finally level 30 (Titan 31) so they can all do everything aside from the hard mode raids which I don't plan on messing with anyway.

My only regret is only having my primary Titan during the loot cave, because it's a real bummer having to grind out bounty XP to level up green and blue armor for materials to upgrade damage resistance and get my other two characters to 31. I've got like 800+ plasteel plating but constantly don't have enough of the hunter/warlock materials to do more than one upgrade a session.

my only real annoyance is that I've ended up with a Titan that's spec'd almost entirely away from intelligence and almost entirely towards strength, but on the other hand my Warlock is either 90% or 100% discipline right now meaning I can literally throw nonstop grenades for 10-15 seconds or however long it lasts. Just tearing through mobs of goobers.

I got real lucky two thursdays ago, my alt titan 28 got gjallahorn from the exotic chest in VOG, then my 31 hunter got it from deathsinger. my friends hate me. i'm hitting that material wall with my titan, and i never get to do everything i can with both of them as much as i'd like to.

exotic armor for my hunter:
i think i bought the third man helmet
don't touch me gauntlets
lucky raspberry chest

oh yeah i have some exotic thing waiting for a warlock in my vault, don't know when i'll get around to starting one

primaries:
red death from xur
no land beyond from a legendary engram, when i first saw exotic i got so hype then went to check it out. i've kept it around.

special:
icebreaker from xur

heavy:
my two gjallys

i have both the bad juju and thorn bounties at their respective crucible objectives, but i suck at and rarely jump into the crucible. i'm sitting on eidolon ally but don't know how likely it is i'll get a hard crota completion done anytime soon, don't even feel that confident in VOG.

it still pisses me off that i've only ever gotten chatterwhite and shards from atheon. it's so anticlimactic, even if it was something i didn't need i'm sick of that shader.
295226, bad juju isn't too bad, I'm bad at crucible too.
Posted by Nodima, Thu Apr-02-15 11:24 AM
well, usually I'm bad. I kick some major ass on Fields of Glass.

but I've completed that bounty three times, 10,000 Crucible points is four, maybe five control matches if you're just average and roughly 1:1 K/D ratio. Compared to Thorn (or really any other crucible-based bounty) it's a cake walk.

Super Good Advice is the bounty I'll usually take if I just want to grind it out to get the exotic shard and materials out of it, but if that's not an option Bad Juju isn't so bad either (though 25 strikes is quite a lot).

yeah i just finished bad juju this past weekend without taking up too much of my other play time in two days, i was trying to put my void sniper rifle to good use (still dying for one of those primary weapon drops with void on it from a raid) at the same time to work the thorn one as well, but i barely broke 100/500 at one point and have fallen back since. the 'death penalty' on that ruins me, i have good games sometimes, but i have to avoid playing at times when my neighbourhood is all on the internet too because i can feel when i'm that split second behind due to my connection.

i've only ever got the same exotic bounties offered to me, this is my first time trying to run through these two. the other one is that one that asks for the +25 K/D ratio which scared me the most. haven't gotten offered one in awhile.

i'm finally at a point where i can hit 32 with my armor pieces as long as i get the mats needed, unfortunately i'll have to sacrifice my don't touch me gauntlets for that until i get the helmet.

Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Thu Apr-02-15 02:33 PM
http://destinyexotics.com/?share=Iw0JlSuncgGOTktbRjj2z3QA

I don't keep multiples of any weapons except for 3 Icebreakers and 3 Gjallarhorns.

Because I play PvP with my hunter, I do have multiples of various raid gloves and boots so that my loadout is basically 100% for both Intellect and Discipline whether I'm playing as a Gunslinger or Bladedancer.
295311, anyone else keep 3 of the same class??? (I got 3 Titans)

295366, that's how the 'world's first' level 30 (or 32?) got there
Posted by celery77, Sat Apr-11-15 02:28 PM
it might have been 32, but either way some dude just ran Titans over and over inside the same week to be able to Raid as many times as possible. It's not a bad idea. I have alts that I don't use, basically (my Warlock can hit 30 with a certain configuration, but is mat-trapped on the scrap material, never really touched my Hunter). I end up raiding multiple times with my Titan in a week sometimes just because I want to help friends and my Titan is my only raid-worthy class.

But yeah, people grinding three high level classes -- they're just nuts to me. I'm happy with my one big player. I don't need three.

Posted by celery77, Mon Apr-13-15 09:13 AM
GOTDAMN that's a cold shower after getting to level 50 in Battlefield: Hardline.

Maps are claustrophobic, weapons are unbalanced, small map space is just used HORRIBLY -- no sight lines, no open areas, EVERY position can be easily flanked. Wonky radar doesn't help matters. Just a complete nightmare. It's beyond me how Bungie has skated by criticism for how nightmarishly poor the multi is.
295391, RE: made the mistake of playing the Crucible again last night
Posted by upUPNorth, Mon Apr-13-15 07:27 PM
the most fun i've had in it was when i attempted to play a dedicated sniper role with my void sniper in a way i don't think anyone was used to. i had the stupidest 'hiding' spot in that moon map for a control game, trying to get kills on people taking B from across the way, and people on my side would just run by me and not notice me there crouched, not even invisible. it feels like such a chore, and lacks variety, and the level design just doesn't feel at all related to the game world it's coming from. And I don't get how anyone enjoys those smaller fireteam gametypes, it just limits gameplay even more.

(swipe)

House of Wolves, the second expansion for Destiny, will be out in just over a month, publisher Activision announced today. We’ll be grinding again on May 19.

Activision sent out a media blast this morning with a new trailer for House of Wolves, but it’s currently private. They say they sent the news early by accident and that the video will actually go live at 1pm ET today, so we’ll just have to stare at the screen for an hour and a half waiting for the good part, which should be a familiar activity to anyone who plays Destiny.

(Another link & Swipe)

http://www.polygon.com/2015/4/13/8402275/destiny-expansion-house-of-wolves-release-date

Destiny's second expansion, House of Wolves, will be released May 19, publisher Activision announced today.

That's about four and a half months after the first expansion, The Dark Below, which launched Dec. 9. The launch date for House of Wolves falls during Activision's previously announced second-quarter release window, and is the exact date that was rumored in a February leak. Destiny itself was released Sept. 9 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. House of Wolves is the second and final expansion in the game's $34.99 Expansion Pass; purchased separately, the two expansions cost $19.99 each.

Bungie said earlier this year that it hopes it will fix some of The Dark Below's mistakes with House of Wolves. In particular, the studio doesn't want to invalidate hard-earned raid gear with items you can just buy from vendors, or force players to re-upgrade exotic weapons. Instead, Bungie is aiming to "lessen the grind and get players to the fun parts of their arsenal faster," according to designer Luke Smith.

House of Wolves may send players to the Reef in the Asteroid Belt, according to a late-February leak. It would be a new social hub for Guardians to hang out in, a second area beyond the Tower in The Last City on Earth. The leaked information for House of Wolves also mentioned a new Awoken storyline and a third raid, plus three new Crucible maps and another Fallen strike. With each of the two February leaks, Bungie advised Destiny players that all House of Wolves content is "placeholder" and is subject to change until the studio officially announces the details.

I thought that was a fun side quest type deal and it's also cool that they leave those spawns out during Cosmodrome patrols too.

Plus one of my characters still uses the gauntlets I got from that thing.

What I would REALLY love though is if we could turn materials into other materials. I got 1,000 Weapon Parts, can't I turn those into some Hardonic Essence and Sapphire Wire? My Titan was around for the loot cave so I'll never run out of Plasteel, I got like 500 of them, but I'm constantly on tape delay with my Hunter and ESPECIALLY my Warlock due to material issues.

Even just let us buy some, PLEASE.

I'm excited to not be late to everything new this time, but I don't find myself being hyped so much as relieved for a little variety but still more of the same. As someone with a main awoken hunter, the leak should resonate with me, and the fact that the little there was in the story for the queen and the reef and fallen loyal to them is a strong foundation to build something interesting on, I lack the confidence in them meeting any of the expectations of bettering their storytelling and feel like I'll be let down.

I am wondering what it's going to be like trying a raid for the first time without someone knowing what's going on, hope to get a fun first-time crew to figure stuff out with rather than following leaders.

me and my fireteam buddies were wishing for some fallen weapons, particularly a pulse rifle that behaves like they're vandal homing rifles.

i wonder if they plan to handle the 'upgrading' or outdating of old weapons the same way as before?

I know it can be unbalanced- as someone who's put a shit ton of hours into PvP I know that better than anybody- but it can be fun, and I honestly look to the game for that experience far more than PvE. of course, it's been that way mainly because of the existing PvE content getting pretty stale and me having all the exotics, but still. it's really worth getting over the learning curve. especially with these new special ammo patches that will (hopefully) limit shotguns... I'm excited to se what new PvP experiences can be had.
295398, I'm pretty far along the 'curve', it's just bad multi content.
Posted by celery77, Tue Apr-14-15 08:44 AM
and I have a big enough arsenal and friends who can coach me on the gear so I have the gear to compete. I just find it tedious to have to hit the tower to pull guns that are useful in any way just for Crucible (stuff I already have maxed out, when I'm only playing to level weapons at this point), because only a small subset of weapons in the game are even tenable in PvP, and then you just get mowed down by shotguns or snipers half the time anyway. I tried so hard to forgive or understand it, but after spending time back in Battlefield, it's just impossible to even tolerate the Crucible.

The level design is terrible, the game objectives are so weak, the balance is off, I just can't underscore enough that the levels are really poorly designed, it's just not good...

I'll fuck with the 'horde' mode in the DLC, if that's true, though...
295401, I have no desire to play deathmatch

if I wanted to, I'd go play CoD

295408, Only played a couple PvP games post-patch, but I'm liking it so far
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Tue Apr-14-15 04:54 PM
I like the highlighting for special and heavy ammo and the countdowns. My entire team actually gathered around the heavy ammo for once. Of course this could always backfire with someone using a special on the group, but I think this does more good than harm. It also states who picked up the heavy ammo, so you can know exactly who to bitch at if they pick it up by themselves.

Didn't see so many shotguns in the matches I was in, but I also predict that people who used to main a shotgun in the past might start using Universal Remote instead. I didn't try using my Spear with final round, so we'll see if that remains a viable strategy post-patch. Most of my fights were primary vs. primary, which is what I've wanted for a while. I use shotguns a lot on certain maps, but that was more out of necessity than preference, and I'm hoping Crucible will be more primary vs. primary from now on.

The new effect once you're hit by Thorn seems even more pronounced as your screen turns green-ish.
295411, the patch fixes seem long over-due, but still -- Invective? Icebreaker?
Posted by celery77, Tue Apr-14-15 06:57 PM
I'm *sort of* motived to play through a few rounds post-patch to see if the added balance makes things better, but it's not just the weapons, the maps are soooo bad and I just get frustrated and annoyed any time I turn it on... and still why wouldn't I just take Invective? why can't guys still camp with Icebreaker? or like you said Universal Remote.

I need to just get the fuck off Destiny whenever the multi itch strikes me, because like rjcc said, if I want to play deathmatch, there are soooo many better options...
295412, I like Fields of Glass a lot
Posted by Nodima, Tue Apr-14-15 07:23 PM
but that might just be because I only recently came across it during the last Iron Banner and after getting Red Death that week I've been 1.5 K/D or better basically every time I run the map compared to .6 or worse on every other map.

I'm always first or second overall on FoG.

Then again I also only really play when Iron Banner is up for the big XP swings, haven't even played that enough to get the truly good rewards out of it.

295413, well, the nice thing about the patch
Posted by Aeon, Tue Apr-14-15 10:43 PM
is that the most unbalanced maps (some of them at least) have been de-weighted substantially from the playlist for objective game types- so, blind watch, firebase Delphi. aside from shores of time I think the rest of the maps are pretty solid for control, and in a clash/skirmish/FFA setting I really don't see what the problem is with the maps, you just have to know how to play em, which comes with spending a lot of time in the crucible.

I rarely see shotgun campers and I can out snipe most snipers I come up against so that stuff isn't too much of a threat to me. maybe it's different on xbone though, as far as popular play strats.

295520, THIS

295397, makes sense ---> Crota Raid was busted as shit, y'all
Posted by celery77, Tue Apr-14-15 08:35 AM
within a week videos were going up of guys solo'ing it with No Land Beyond. I had ONE good attempt at it early on, then after that it was impossible to get six players that wanted to attempt it without just exploiting the bridge.

and it's still not fixed. The other night the Party I was in had 7 players wanting to raid, so we set up a 4-player team and a 3-player team and 'raced' to the end of (normal) Crota. I was in the 4-person team and it was a dead heat until we hit the Ir Yut killing part (the witch pre-Crota) and that took the 3 a couple tries. Crota himself took them like 2-3 tries, but they basically skated right through 6-person content with 3 players. If they need to leave the next raid in the oven a while longer so it comes out fully formed, I'm totally okay with that.
295409, I've had so many crota attempts (and vog) fail because of glitches

like fuuuuuck, it could at least work and not kill us just cuz it glitched up

295400, predictably this actually makes me more excited.

I just don't want to be forced to find a group of people to play this game, I want it to be organic and whenever is suitable for me. I get that there is Destiny LFG and folks here that play regular and all that but I don't even want to put that much effort in. Destiny is very much Totino's Pizza to me, I put it in and I play and it's just fine and everything works and I'm satisfied and three hours have gone by and I need a nap.

So if they want to focus on something that is matchmade (I am just hoping this is their intent) then fantastic. Give me something to do. Because I'm not playing your Raids, and it's not because I don't think they sound fun. I am just not the sort of person that's going to put the effort in to play them, and the one time I did I was the guy that was dead for two hours, listen to people talk about strategies I didn't care to comprehend because the rest of the game doesn't require that level of thought.

Sure, I'm annoyed when a guy is playing Titan Defender without Helm of Saint-14 for the blinding effect because it means I get killed inside the bubble, but beyond little things like that I'm just not that obsessed. I want my characters to be the best builds they can but I'm not planning for Crota or Aetheon. I just want to be happy playing this game when I want to, and it's a real bummer some of the coolest gear is locked behind this content my play style doesn't allow me to access.

If this news means my play style isn't going to be held back from the coolest gear this time around, that's great news for me.

295482, Bungie did a preview stream today
Posted by Nodima, Wed Apr-22-15 02:42 PM
Looks like some real useful stuff is getting added. I've heard I have pretty good rolls on all my equipment but that Ascend feature should be pretty clutch going forward, and I like that Exotics can be upgraded at any time now instead of only when Xur is available and handing out a decent roll. Plus no more re-leveling!

295488, they did good with this one
Posted by liveguy, Wed Apr-22-15 05:08 PM
ALL legendary gear can be brought up to level 34 and 365 damage.

You can swap ascendents for radiants for glimmer for motes and any other way you wanna trade those items 1 for 1.

A lot less grind, but I would bet MONEY getting a 'Ethereal Light' drop is gonna be a bidge! lol

Prison of Elders will change weekly...

That might be dope.

Sounds promising.
295489, They are doing the right things with the HoW DLC/update.
Posted by Steve O Tron v2, Wed Apr-22-15 05:17 PM
With all these ascendant/radiant mats that I have, I'm freaking rich, haha.

The raids are going to be relevant again, the gunsmith actually is going to be a useful gunsmith with the ability to reforge, upgrade paths are reasonable and don't reset everything, and there's going to be a lot of variety in terms of how guardians look because it's not just one set of gear that will get you to max level. I'm really excited to see what the new perks are for various weapons too.
295493, super stoked to finally have Guardians with something besides Raid gear
Posted by celery77, Wed Apr-22-15 06:12 PM
easily the best part of this announcement. And I still have *some* 300 damage weapons that I held on to because I liked their rolls, and I figured you could still shoot 300 weapons in lots of content besides the Raid.

So now I get to shoot those same weapons in all content? Awesome.

But seriously, I'd love to see the stats on how uniform equipment usage has gotten in these recent months. Based on the players I play with, it's 100% Crota Raid gear with various exotics mixed in the armor set, then the weapons are pretty uniformly a small mix of Black Hammer / Ice Breaker / Gjallarhorn / Raid primaries with very little variation. The only time I personally air out some of my older weapons is on Vault of Glass runs (which the people I play with have been running for god knows why, but it's fun). I've actually scrapped a few armor pieces that came through Legendary Engrams recently wondering, "should I be inspecting the perk nodes on these for a level 31 build?", especially since scrapping them into Ascendart Shards is basically pointless.

So anyway -- everything about this announcement is awesome. I'm dying to get back into my vault to see what I saved (because I scrapped some, but I know I saved some others...) and I'm feeling soooo vindicated for the leveling I've been doing on a 300 damage FWC handcannon (with a grenadier and fast reload after precision kill perk) simply because I liked the look and the way it played.

kudos Bungie, I couldn't love this game any more.
295522, i hope they implement some new Grimoire stuff

295628, sounds just like ODST Firefight mode to me ..... which is AWESOME
Posted by celery77, Thu May-07-15 09:26 AM
still have great memories from some marathon Firefight sessions in ODST, leaving you just exhausted but satisfied at the end. I was a little bitter this game didn't launch with something exactly like that, to be honest.

and MAN I can't wait to get in there with some of my regular fireteam players. We've been super-stacking (piling up orbs) to such an extent that half the time in the current content there's more orbs than we could ever hope to use -- Templar stage just littered with Orbs, wasted Orbs in just about every Strike we ever go into, more supers on Crota than you could ever use -- really hope this mode pushes the challenge for this kind of stuff.

I love this game. It is the king of next-gen for me, I don't care what anyone else says.
295631, indeed...I used to love Score Attack on Halo Reach

and Horde on Gears...

This was a smart move on their part.

A good appetizer to a really good raid, which I am sure they are working on.
