I would recommend going into *most* of the game blind as personal discovery is a big part of the game, but one thing I would use as reference are the different curios:

It's a pain in the ass to keep track of the one item that interacts with a curio, and not worth the headache when experimenting goes wrong (since using a wrong item loses it).
