Franks one of my mains in Marvel Capcom 3 which I play regularly, but could never get into it.

I just think for some reason survival horror has turned me off this gen...still never played Dead Space for instance.

PS4 will probably have it a year or so after it's on Xbox1. I wouldn't blame anyone who couldn't wait though. That games looks mind-blowing. The lack of a single player tells me the developers really know what they're doing.

I could see myself riding with the PS3 through til next winter, especially since a lot of the cooler games appear to be split-gen for the forseeable future.

I don't plan on keeping both. I've never had more than one system at any given time. I'm a casual gamer and can't see myself playing games enough to justify buying two systems. So I plan on flipping one on Ebay. 99% sure it will be the PS4. I pre-ordered from Amazon so I won't get charged until they're ready to ship. So I can always change my mind on ordering either one and not be out of pocket on some $$$.

I have two PS4s pre-ordered that I will try to flip to possibly keep the xbox one...

Everything I read about the Xbox One turns me off more and more.

I'm just debating on it because for $100 more I can get a nice 85mm lens.

At the same time, these things will probably be in short supply, so buying one to flip seems like a good idea (but when's the last time that actually worked? Wii?)

I'm fine with that...just hate that the Kinect is required...not because of privacy concerns...just think it might be more gimmicky than the Wii/Wii U...

It's not talked about often enough with the DRM discussion, but if the Kinect's capabilities are as robust as claimed, then it could be a big step in motion gaming. If normal human responses can be measured and "game-ified" then all the gimmicky bullshit might go by the wayside (imagine combining it with the Oculus Rift).

The first version of Kinect promised to completely change how we play games. Instead of sitting on our couch with a controller, we'd be running, dancing, throwing, and shouting our way through level after level. The new version of Kinect, the one that will ship with every Xbox One console in November, initially seemed like more of the same: more data, more accuracy, to the same end. But as we talk to game developers at E3 2013, it's quickly becoming clear that the next generation of motion gaming isn't about making us stand in front of our TVs and play. It's about watching us play, as we've always played, and reacting in kind.

Take Ryse: Son of Rome, for instance. The game is played with your controller — you don't use your arm to swing your sword, or pull an arrow out of your eye. Instead, you shout "archers!" to summon some medieval aerial support, and beckon your men forward with your arm. You do all this from your couch: every part of Ryse works with your controller, parts of it are just better with Kinect.

The game's producers called it "mash to mastery," allowing people to play however they want. You want to pound buttons, hoping to survive the onslaught of barbarians? Great. But if you learn to use Kinect, to direct your men with your arms and your voice, and then to pair that with smarter and faster button presses, you'll be a much better (and more brutal) executioner.

I asked the Ryse producers and directors why the game is coming out now, fully two years after it was first announced at E3 2011. Their answer related to the Kinect's development. "It was announced as a Kinect game, where you would just stand in front of the TV and play like that. But as the Crytek team started developing the game and story further, they realized that the setting, the story, the things you want to do just better fit a third-person combat game." The new Kinect, they said, allowed them to create that kind of game and still have the fun, interactive features Kinect offers.

In Dead Rising 3, an open-world zombie game that seems to be part Grand Theft Auto and part Kingdom Rush, your controller is once again your friend. Your Kinect might be your enemy. Zombies can hear you talking, even rustling on your couch, and they'll come after you. (Prepare to play Dead Rising 3 in the quietest room you can find.) Once they find you, if you wriggle on your couch as you presumably would if a zombie were attempting to eat your entire face all at once, you'll wriggle the zombie off you. The controller stays in your hands, but as you react to the game, the game reacts to you.

These are two of Microsoft's key Xbox One titles, and they're using Kinect in a way that might finally make it palatable to gamers hardcore and casual alike. You don't need to use the Kinect, but the games are more fun and more immersive when you use it — and you'll be better at the game, too.

In a more futuristic demo called "Reflex," Xbox reps took the idea even further. As we walked through a Tron-like level, we could raise the controller over our face to activate our shield, touch our temple to activate our X-ray vision, and duck out of the way to, well, duck out of the way. These are activities that make sense, that we might even reflexively do anyway while we game — I know I lean a little every time I try to dodge a bullet in Halo. With an always-on, always-watching, always-listening Kinect, our surroundings and our actions become part of the game.

"We've exposed these reflexes to developers in a way that thinks of your spine as a thumbstick," I was told during the Xbox hardware demonstration. "We're able to bring natural, intuitive, instinctive Kinect input in a way that's thrilling even to the most hardcore gamers." Kinect may have more capabilities than ever, and more features than any developer seems to be currently using, but as we see developers continue to roll out their games in the coming months, Xbox One Kinect games will win big by thinking small.

We'll see. I'll most likely try to flip it and buy it again later on, but I won't be mad if there's no market for that, either.

I've gone from NES > SNES > N64 > XBox > Xbox 360, and I've never owned a PlayStation myself. Played PS1 and PS2 a ton through family and friends, however, but I've spent almost no time on a PS3. I really miss fighting games, and the XBox controller was complete shit for them, so I'm looking forward to playing them again.

Kind of funny that M$ isn't even trying in Japan anymore. Guessing the next Idolm@ster will be on PS4 then? I really like that it's region-free. I'm curious as to whether or not the Blu-Ray player will be region-free as well then.

Australia is an extreme example, but (IIRC) the PS4 there will be about $549. So it would actually be cheaper for Aussies to buy from, say, Amazon here and just pay the shipping costs.

Edit: Or if people like to import games (read: Japan), then they don't have to worry if it plays on the system.

and while I don't make enough to justify it, there are definitely people out there that have PS+ accounts in both the States and Europe so that they can get in on the European deals as well. Sleeping Dogs and XCOM were on their service months before the US, and they've generally gotten bigger budget titles like Red Dead Redemption and Arkham City.

Part of the reason I don't play my PS3 much is the online setup. Then when they have a decent store, they turn into the slowest clunkiest mess that it makes the nintendo eshop seem like iTunes.

i was worried about this too so i called up Best Buy. they put a temporary charge immediately after ordering to check that the account is valid, after about 48 hours the charge should drop off. the full amount will be charge when the item is released so you just have to make sure that you have enough money in the account at that time.

i preordered from amazon as well, the order went through and they didn't even do a temp charge. in their FAQs page is specifically said that it will charge when the item is released.

that they put an initial hold on your card (which is no biggie) but then "ping" it once every week or so to make sure you still have the funds in the account to cover the full cost of the system. I've even seen some complaints of people having to holds going on at once (I'm not cakey enough to have $800 worth of holds on my card).

It's June and that shit doesn't come out til November or December. I'm not really trying to have them putting on and taking off a $400 hold on my card until then, or worse, fucking up like they have in numerous instances I've read about online. I'll just go someplace in person and pre-order.

I spoke with a customer service rep and they said if it's a credit card you're not charged until it ships.

If you use a debit card, then it would be charged when you place the order. I didn't get into whether the debit card has a Visa logo, can be used as a credit card, etc. I just used a credit card to be on the safe side.

I liked the PS3 controller the size it was. My hands aren't especially big.

I've always felt like the Dual Shock was the best things about the N64 controller and the SNES controller since the day it was in stores, and therefore the most obvious controller ever. But it's even more obvious that for whatever reason I appear to either have small hands or be comfortable having everything so compact because a slightly bigger controller is obviously what the people want.



Having not held the controller I'm a lot more worried about the DS4 than a lot of the press seems to be. It looks like a radical change, and those quarters of an inch(es) wider. I'm hoping I'm not all of a sudden lost at sea without a controller; these dudes are from Japan and have always toed the middle ground on size in the past, though. I've got to imagine they know what they're doing.

The sixaxis only version was crazy light and felt flimsy. I added extended triggers to all my DS3/Sixaxis controllers. The 360 grip is probably the best grip to me because it's wider. We will see about the DS4 grip I looks like Sony did a real feat here.

X1 will have its own system obviously (and there's no guarantee it will actually work), but fact is this type of online behavior has been studied for quite some time.

And I don't want to give Microsoft too much credit yet, but at the very least it's great that they're trying to fix the Xbox's reputation as the console filled with the 12 year old kids screaming epithets.

To be honest though, I've never played LOL or DOTA, just because they would absolutely consume me. And the requisite teamwork needed to succeed in these types of games will inevitably invite griefers of every form.

But I think a big factor with these reputation systems is that they're so predicated on user participation. I would imagine most people experiencing abuse would just grumble and KIM. Most probably wouldn't take the effort needed to report the abusers and go through the process to punish someone.

With that said, this sort of sophistication in policing players still feels like it's in its infancy. Game developers are usually preoccupied with ensuring their game behaves well, not necessarily that their *players* will. I don't think DOTA or X1 (or any system really) will ever truly eliminate bad eggs, but at least it's encouraging that companies are willing to put more effort into it.

Nice to see anyone try anything. Since I'm strictly PS3 I don't see nearly a third of what I'm sure 360 users experience since no one owns mics anyway, but that said most of the mics I DO run into then are either dads taking care of their kids / getting drunk with their friends, or motherfuckers with music too loud or catchphrases too hateful.

The only thing I give a fuck about is the PlayStation Store. They need to fix it before PS4 comes out, because as it stands right now, it's a complete joke

and that's sad. I go to the PS Store and I'm like WTF every time. It takes forever to load up and forever to get to content. Just a mess.

that gets my goat. I have a 250GB hard drive but more than half of that is taken up by...whatever it is, and since I got back into gaming with PS+ I've been mostly digital. But going back to finish a game I put aside and deleted for a while is just a pain in the ass, especially if I downloaded it two years ago I'll be searching for it for 10 minutes on top of the download time.

Another unpopular Microsoft policy appears to be heading for the history books. Sources tell Game Informer that the company is reversing course on its publishing requirements. This will allow independent studios to access digital distribution without a publishing partner.

Independent publishing was a key platform in Sony's E3 2013 press conference, bringing a number of developers on stage. Supergiant Games' Transistor, Abe's Oddysee: New 'n' Tasty from Oddworld Inhabitants and Just Add Water, and Don't Starve from Mark of the Ninja studio Klei Entertainment were just some of the titles on display.

In contrast, criticism of Microsoft's curated approach to its marketplace has amplified in recent months, with several former partners saying they will never work with them again. Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning boldly said of Microsoft's indie policy, "There's one party that's making it very clear they're not interested."

The cacophony of naysayers drove Microsoft to rethink its position. Under the new directive, developers can set their own release dates and pricing, which should make the erratic nature of Xbox Live releases less problematic for creators who want to handle their own marketing.

Additionally, we have learned that Microsoft is drastically overhauling its certification process. The company will use a model similar to iTunes and is targeting a 14-day turnaround for an approvals. Instead of extensive code checking, the company will be looking for terms of service violations and significant bugs.

We've also been told, but cannot confirm, that every Xbox One unit can be converted to a debug console. Instead of specific hardware units, Microsoft can authorize a console ID to play pre-release code. This is in line with information we've received about a new process for beta tests. They will be run via hardware provisioning on Xbox One, with the process reportedly to be enabled for up to 25,000 users per test at launch. Given the ability to provision for beta testing, the ability to enable retail hardware for pre-release code seems feasible.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

They need to up their exposure and do a price cut; at this point the higher SKU is only $50 less than PS4's price point. If they wait too long to do the price cut they'll run into users that are just going to wait for the new consoles.

And they still have a major branding problem... many people still think Wii U is just an extension of the Wii, not a brand new system.

Microsoft's policies were terrible for indie games... $30k for title updates after the first one's free? There have been plenty of indie devs that spoke out against Microsoft's policies.

And having always-on DRM would have been fine had they balanced it with an incentive to the consumers... pulling it that quickly meant they really didn't have much (if anything) to offer to consumers to justify the DRM.

Cause you know down the line they are going to reverse that family sharing or a re-tooled version of it.

You'll need to pay for premium membership to play (non-free-to-play) games online with a PS4, but not to share them: Sony prez Shuhei Yoshida clarified on Twitter today that you can stream and record PS4 gameplay footage without paying any PlayStation Plus fees.

In contrast, yesterday Microsoft clarified that you'll need an Xbox Live Gold account in order to use the Xbox One's Game DVR feature, which also lets you record and upload game footage.

Both next-gen consoles will be out this holiday season.

Adding onto what Lach posted above, Gold accounts can now provide benefits to every user on your "home" system, which I guess wasn't the case on 360? For those without PS+/PS3s, anything bought on the system's "admin" account can be used by any of the other user profiles on that system so long as the admin's subscription hasn't lapsed. This article makes it sound like that was never the case on 360, but soon will be?

Also, the home/admin console takes precedence over any other logins, meaning if you log into your account at a friend's house but your girlfriend/brother/parent wants to play on your home system, now they won't get blocked out.

The Games for Windows Live shift sounds nice and proper, too, although having never owned a 360 I can't relate, I have had that issue once with my Steam account across a laptop and desktop.

GTA IV released April 29 of 08 and the Windows version launched December 2, a 7 month window.

My OTHER guess would be that they create the DLC content simultaneously for both generations, and then in a year and change when those are done Rockstar busts out a big Complete Edition style package "complete with hi-res textures and upgraded physics models thanks to the power of PS4!"

But those are supposed to be dropping in price soon.

Great titles are coming out for it and the remote play shit is killer.

It has the potential to be the best handheld since the GBA.

regardless of price. but will I get one anytime soon? doubt it. I still live in a world where $200, or $150, or $100, is a lot of money. And I just don't see myself gaming on the go because I'm so rarely on the go alone and I sleep in the same room as my PS3.

I'd been wanting one for a while. The price drop and the promise of Borderlands 2 made my decision for me. Also, I wanted a portable Spelunky (next week! hype) machine, and I'm gonna wanna play Persona 4 Golden once I beat Persona 3 Portable.

So far, I'm enjoying it. I beat Hotline Miami and had a blast (holy shit that soundtrack is GOOD!). I played some of Uncharted and it's okay. The shooting feels a bit off to be honest though. Played a little bit of Wipeout and holy shit is that good! I remember hearing that the Vita version wasn't that great but fuck that noise, it looks and plays as good as the PS3 one as far as I can tell. I also downloaded Dive Kick. Can't beat S-Kill for the life of me.

Just got another email from MS on the conversion. So now my yearly $99 Family account is now $240 when everyone's subscription is up sometime in June. Dammit.

also, part of me would REALLY like Cerny's game Knack to be good since it's been basically a whole generation since that kind of game had any traction (I know they still make Ratchet games but it's not the same as those first three in terms of "woah new stuff", at least I haven't been compelled to look into them) and it'd be nice to see this generation take another look at more light-hearted, platforming-style action games rather than the huge "realistic" spectacles we've been put through over and over again.

you know, i'd love to get back into the game with the OKP posse's, but i've been out so long that any time i tried out multi with the last few iterations of the game i just get destroyed. was fun back in the day though, but nowadays i just redbox these games and play the campaigns.

I don't think they are going to have a supply problem...the fact that preorders are still available with two months to go is out of the ordinary.

I just preordered another one this week inside my local walmart just to be ready cuz I know folk are going to go nuts around Thanksgiving looking for them. Xbox Ones on the other hand are still in abundance. I got 1 preordered at best buy, 1 at walmart and then 2 on amazon. I'm going to be cancelling the ones on amazon soon if I keep seeing everyone still taking preorders come October.

As usual, the exclusives will dictate purchase decisions.

PlayStation 4 is currently around 50 per cent faster than its rival Xbox One. Multiple high-level game development sources have described the difference in performance between the consoles as “significant” and “obvious.”

Our contacts have told us that memory reads on PS4 are 40-50 per cent quicker than Xbox One, and its ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) is around 50 per cent faster. One basic example we were given suggested that without optimisation for either console, a platform-agnostic development build can run at around 30FPS in 1920×1080 on PS4, but it’ll run at “20-something” FPS in 1600×900 on Xbox One. “Xbox One is weaker and it’s a pain to use its ESRAM,” concluded one developer.

Microsoft is aware of the problem and, having recently upped the clock speed of Xbox One, is working hard to close the gap on PS4, though one developer we spoke to downplayed the move. “The clock speed update is not significant, it does not change things that much,” he said. “Of course, something is better than nothing.”

Even this close to launch, “the hardware isn’t locked,” said another source. Sony and Microsoft are each still working on the graphics drivers for each console, and Xbox One is lagging behind in this regard – Microsoft “has been late on their drivers and that has been hurting them,” said one source. Another described Xbox One’s graphics drivers less charitably as “horrible”. Both consoles’ graphics drivers will continue to improve right up to – and beyond – launch, which will even up the difference in performance a little.

Xbox One does, however, boast superior performance to PS4 in other ways. “Let’s say you are using procedural generation or raytracing via parametric surfaces – that is, using a lot of memory writes and not much texturing or ALU – Xbox One will be likely be faster,” said one developer.

Both platform holders are, of course, encouraging developers to take advantage of each console’s unique features (the DualShock 4’s touch pad and Kinect, for example) but there’s little enthusiasm for either among the developers we spoke to. “They really want us to make use of platform specific stuff to give their version a leg up over the other,” said one source. “But unless there’s a good design reason or incentive we rarely do.”

Indeed, despite that gulf in speed, the differences between cross platform launch window games will be negligible; with tight deadlines to meet, it’s more expedient for developers to deliberately create near-identical versions.

“The poor drivers have made it difficult to push either of them, and the developers aren’t familiar with the hardware yet,“ said one source. Another stated that we’ll begin to see far greater use of each platform’s unique features once we’re past the first wave of releases, when developers have more time and experience with each console’s quirks.

One source even suggested that enforcing parity across consoles could become a political issue between platform holders, developers and publishers. They said that it could damage perceptions of a cross platform title, not to mention Xbox One, if the PS4 version shipped with an obviously superior resolution and framerate; better to “castrate” the PS4 version and release near-identical games to avoid ruffling any feathers.

This claim was later countered by a contact at a different studio. “It would be totally fine for us to make one version prettier without any political difficulties but it usually doesn’t make financial sense,” they said, “unless it’s a very simple tweak.”

The difference between cross platform launch window games will be small, and improved graphics drivers plus the power of the cloud might yet tip the balance in Xbox One’s favour. Nonetheless, at launch, PS4 will be the more capable console.

Since they've run out, there haven't been anymore available. But Xboxes appear to be in decent supply. I have a feeling there's going to be some fights for PS4's this November. I'll be waiting in line with the Taurus G2. lol The 2nd PS4 I have coming from Amazon I'm selling.

It only had playable demos for Knack, Fifa and Octodad.... so in other words it wasnt the best selection of games to show off the PS4 (would have been nice to have Killzone running on the demo unit).

Too small a sample size and not the top launch titles to really say it did or didnt live up to the hype.

The graphics were impressive, but didnt jump out as "next gen" in the games i got to play.

I am not a big fan of the DualShock 3, so I was extremely curious to try out the DS4. It immediately felt better when I held it. I always thought the DS3 felt too small and cramped and my hands never felt totally comfortable gripping it. The DS4 is much fatter and the handles are on a steeper angle, so it feels great this time. Your hands are more upright than on an angle, which I really prefer. Doesnt feel cheap either, its well designed.

Touchpad wasnt working for the demos, but it felt nice to touch and the entire pad clicks in as a button.

The curved triggers are an awesome addition, but i wish they had a bit more resistance.

Bottom line is I hate the DS3 and I thought this new controller was a tremendous improvement. I think the 360 controller was the best ever, so I am curious to hold the Xbox One controller (the Microsoft store had a Xbone and Controller under glass... the controller looked much bigger than the old X360 controller).

edit: forgot to answer about the interface.... it wasnt the new PS4 dash... it was just a series of tiles of the game demos designed for the demo units only.

Only mod I've made was add triggers to my DS3s. A month away. Greatness awaits.

and all previous Sony controllers, whereas I've felt like they stumbled onto perfection with the very first Playstation controller and have only captured the perfection of the times with each successive controller. So when I see everyone from games journalists to average joes say they love how the Dual Shock 4 feels with the added ceveat that they thought all of Sony's previous controllers were "terrible" or "uncomfortable" leaves me a little worried. Because I don't like the 360 controller at all (though a lot of that has to do with the asymmetrical sticks).


But, like I said, every form of the Playstation controller has been perfect for me so far. Benefit of the doubt.

for launch. the entire Sony press conference blindsided them. remember before official details started coming out everybody expected that conference to be about Sony's always-online, no used games DRM. and then they went the complete opposite way and have won the humanity vote ever since.


and now Microsoft won't let journalists get their hands on launch games before release day, for alleged reasons as benign as they want to throw a big launch party to as lame as developers haven't mastered the ESRAM yet so everything from resolution to textures is going to be slightly inferior on all the multi-platform X1 games and they don't want the consumers to know.


as someone whose vote has really always come down to the Dual Shock vs. the Xbox controller but otherwise has no real bias for either company, it's been amazing to watch Microsoft play themselves the same way Sony did seven years ago.

It's an adjustment but it feels a lot better.
The buttons and triggers are vastly improved
The D pad responds faster too.
The touch screen is clickable also,
The charging cable with the PS3 does not work,
you have to get the digital camera equivalent.
Overall its super comfy with better response with a ton less dead zone in the analog sticks.

It's amazing as a case, I'm thinking about getting those maxed out NVIDIA cards.
But if I get a PS4 I might never get a chance to get on the PC.

who should probably just stop talking altogether.

ps4 version = not 1080p, and in the screens I've seen so far, does not look better than the XB1 version. I'll need to see both in motion though.

PS4 is below that, with 1600x900 upscaled to 1080p, running at 60fps.

XO is 720p at 60fps.

I actually like how the XO version looks a little more than the PS4, even though the PS4 is clearly better specced.

Honestly, none of the launch games really interest me besides KZ. I've never been big on the modern military FPS games like CoD and BF. Even if Drive Club was out I wouldn't care because realistic racers aren't my thing, either.

I'm looking forward to seeing what indie stuff is out at launch though.

Of indie games coming to the PS4. Games like Flower and Journey really have given me experiences that the big loud triple A titles haven't given me save Dishonored and Bioshock Infinite.

There's still games I need to play or finish on the PS3 (GTA5, GT6) so both would be hooked up for a while. but I definitely use the PS3 to stream movies and music from my server more than I play games on it. I'm not as mad it doesn't play CDs (but still weird), no MP3s or DLNA is unacceptable. I see where they wanted to focus on games, but this is a bit much

Earlier this year I had 2 Xboxes and 2 PS3s (i got one extra of each as gifts from work).

Sold the extra 360 and PS3 earlier this summer for $300 total.

Now just traded in my PS3, 15 games (most 1-3 years old), and 2 extra controllers to Amazon for $300 in credit.

I'm keeping my 360 for now... still playing GTA 5, Arkham Origins and want the Bioshock Infinite DLC.. plus might get SP: Stick of Truth.

I already have about $400 in best buy gift cards left (thank you credit card rewards), so I'm set for November.

I have a PS4 and Xbone both preordered... plan to flip one on ebay, but which one I keep and which one I flip is still up in the air. decisions, decisions...

That was the reason I preordered at multiple places lol. I'm deciding if I want to keep the extra amazon ps4 and flip or just cancel that preorder altogether.

This generation I preferred the Dualshock 3 for 2D games and the 360 controller for 3D.

Next gen I might prefer the Dualshock 4 for both.

I messed around with my DS4 last night on 2D games like Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, and 3rd Strike. The already solid Sony d-pad is better than ever (and might make me forget my SNES nostalgia). The sticks even feel good for platforming (I fantasized about playing Mark of the Ninja with them). Also, the triggers can be used reliably in combos (Sean's standing strong to fierce roundhouse is automatic now), if you're forced to play Street Fighter without a stick.

But the real test is with shooters, which I'll give a spin tonight. Prolly some Borderlands since I got some catching up to do.

How much of an improvement is the Xbox One controller over the 360, though? D-pad aside, the 360 controller is still a great design, so they don't need to reinvent the wheel, but the look of the trigger redesign gives me some pause. I loved the shape of the 360 triggers, and it looks like they broke it.

but everything I've heard about both controllers has been good.

I duno anyone who's been to the demos yet tho so can't say

the dualshock's sticks feel good now, though.

you'll still prefer offset, but you won't be mad when you have to play playstation no more.

the bigger handles and smaller convex sticks make the set-up much more comfortable.

Controller weighs about 1.5 ounces more than Dual Shock 3 and almost 3 more than the original Sixaxis.

Still wish I'd read someone who's had their hands on a DualShock 3 say the truthful thing, which is "DualShock was a gift from the Gods, DualShock 2 was the inevitable Best Controller Ever and DualShock 3 was the Best Controller Without a Wire Ever, and now I'm pretty sure we'll never need a redesign of controllers ever again"

...but since no one is, I'm left with the slightest worry this controller is going to bum me out in all the subtle ways the 360 controller does. With the symmetric sticks remaining, I'm not TOO worried, though.

One thing I know they definitely improved is its sturdiness; they were messing with one on the last Giant Bomb Unprofessional Fridays and twisting it as hard as they could without any of that creaking that plagued the Dual Shock 3 in tense moments of fighting games and made you feel like you were about to twist the controller in half.

Microsoft has announced the Xbox One will require cloud updates on a regular basis, which could lead to the system rebooting without warning.

That's according to Xbox Live lead program manager John Bruno, who made the revelation during a presentation at GDC Next yesterday (via IGameReponsibly). Bruno explained that while work has been done to try and prevent the system rebooting in the middle of a game, Microsoft hasn't managed to eliminate the issue entirely.

"Once in a while, rather frequently actually, the host OS will require an update, meaning the physical machine is going to get rebooted whether your code is running or not," he explained. "That’s a problematic thing for a game, and oftentimes it's in the middle of a multiplayer session. We’ve worked very hard to overcome that, but that’s not to say it’s going to be a reality in every case."

That’s a problematic thing for a game.

The team behind Titanfall has previously spoken about how dependent the game will be on the Xbox One's cloud capabilities. The implication here, therefore, is that whenever the servers need to be updated or rebooted, the game will be unavailable. When asked by IGameResponsibly about how Titanfall would navigate these issues, Bruno issued the following response:

"I can’t answer that. I don’t know what the guys over at Titanfall have built into their game. It’s up to the game developer. If they want to rely more on our XBLC service, we’re happy to support that. We do provide a platform for them to persist data, but that’s up to the developer to utilize that."

It's possible, then, is that the cloud may have a weekly maintenance period scheduled during a convenient time for most gamers, such as in the early hours of Wednesday morning like many MMOs. We've reached out to Microsoft to see if there are any such plans in the pipeline and ask what happens if an emergency maintenance is needed, and will update the story as soon as we hear back.

considering Sony also won't be sharing to Youtube at launch. The Youtube app on the PS3 was really convenient but it was also buggy, very hard to navigate compared to a desktop or mobile device and its search functionality was pretty lame thanks to that scroll top. I would guess the issue is on Youtube's end for both consoles.

Haven't seen enough of the PS4's to give a fair comparison in my head but from what little I've seen, I have been a little worried that PS4's minimalism is going to look a little...empty, or something. This one still looks surprisingly barebones, but as someone that's hated Windows for a long time I've always been a little envious of the Metro system from an aesthetic standpoint, I really like those screens.

So now I've been lucky enough to have played both PS4 and Xbox One.

I'll start by saying that the controller is fucking amazing. The second you grab hold of it, it just feels so right. And while playing the Forza 5 demo, you truly get a showcase of the impulse triggers, which I was particularly excited about, but they even exceeded my expectations... while i like the DS4 and think its a huge improvement on the DS3, in my personal opinion, Microsoft just improved what was already the GOAT controller... and that says a lot.

The games... i played Killer Instinct and Forza. And I played Fifa and Knack on PS4.... too small a sample size to really judge on both.

I have both preordered... plan to keep one, and rebuy the other at a later date.... I was Sony all the way, but being a former 360 & PS3 owner, I ALWAYS bought the multiplatform games on 360 because i preferred the controller. After having played both, I fucking love the XB1 controller and I'm torn.

edit: if you want to test drive both systems....
all the microsoft stores now have xbox one demos WITH CONTROLLERS.. even the small kiosk ones in malls. some best buys and walmarts have demo units without controllers- im told they may get controllers added to them late next week.

edit 2: forgot to add that i hopped in the dash to switch game demos... then went back out in the dash and started to play around. IMMEDIATELY I was told to only go in the dash to select game demos. lol, im guessing it was a much older version of the dash than Yusuf was rockin in that video demo they released this morning.

It doesn't matter.

But if I got the PS3 or PS4 on already, I don't want to have to switch consoles just to re-watch String get assassinated.

I have a huge backlog of unplayed PS3 games to get through, so I don't mind the wait. Especially since Watchdogs was pushed back.

I'll probably go PS4 but Titanfall has my wandering over to Microsoft.

That's why killzone, cod nor battlefield 4 interest me. Not into the sports games either so my options are slim with the deal they're offering.

Already sold my PS4 on eBay.

Was going to cancel it, but I sold it on ebay for $620. So I'll net $550 after fees and it's going to a state without sales tax.

I know I probably could have gotten $700 locally right before Christmas - but this was completely no hassle.

It's just being shipped directly to the buyer and not to me.

the other parts are just bland and don't seem to be well laid out.

the good news tho, is at least the features look good, and being able to play on two consoles at once with one login is dope.


weird that system settings don't transfer over. the fact that I don't have to reset y axis to inverted in any shooter ever no matter what system I'm on or game I'm playing has been my favorite feature this generation.

I picked up Knack, Ghosts, and Killzone. I'm trying to get all the first party stuff for the systems first.

but man I'm so tempted to go back to Target right now and get AC, 2K14, and BF4. But I kinda want them on XOne instead. I wish Target would get in some XOne games by Saturday. Then it'll really be on and popping. Gotta take advantage of these deals tho right now cuz now that I've seen everyone's black friday ad, no one is having a sale on any of the PS4/XOne games. Not even walmart.

next week like they did for PS4 this week. At least I'm hoping.

Thanks to the folks over on NeoGAF, we’re starting to get a pretty decent picture of just how much space the Xbox One’s launch titles will need, thanks to @midnightswami who, you may recall, was lucky enough to get his console delivered earlier than expected.

While his Xbox One remains temporarily barred from Xbox Live, he is still able to install games and play them in offline mode. Fellow NeoGAF members have compiled a list based on his findings, which shows that the smallest install size is 246MB for Xbox Fitness; the largest installation so far is for NBA 2K14, which eats up a mighty 43GB of space. Call Of Duty: Ghosts isn’t too far behind, with a footprint of 39GB.

I really have been waiting to hear about them triggers and bumpers. They got me worried.

feels lighter than the 360 controller even with the battery in it. I do like how the battery is held inside now versus just feeling like it's clinging for dear life to the back like the 360 controller. The battery pack actually goes inside a compartment and gets covered up so it's not bulking out. Overall it feels real sturdy, triggers and bumpers feel good, but I can't judge it yet till I get to game with it. But I like it.

I've only been worried because the triggers and bumpers look identical to the set-up on the OUYA controller (with both trigger and bumper looking like one big piece). I'm sure the XBO controller won't have nearly as bad build quality, but still, the similarities gives me pause.

Definitely my favorite controller that gen.
