Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Jun-10-13 12:10 PM
Greenawalt's introducing the game's "drivatar" feature, which "logs and processes your decisions in the cloud." The game essentially learns how you drive, and it drives against other people while you're doing other things (and earns you points as well).

283261, Did they debunk the used game myths?
Posted by Kira, Mon Jun-10-13 12:37 PM
283271, it wasnt in CBoaT's latest list of rumors
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-10-13 12:49 PM
CBoaT being the undefeated god of rumors on NeoGAF. dude is always right. always. this is from a few days ago.
---
NeoGAF user Cboat has revealed some “truthfacts” about Microsoft and the Xbox One before E3 kicks off. While we’re strictly treating the following statements of his as rumors, it should be noted that Cboat is known as a games industry insider, and is famous for never being wrong, which makes this worth reporting. He claims the following:

1. Microsoft is pushing developers to not mention PS4 versions of games. If a game isn’t a confirmed Xbox One exclusive, just know that it has a PS4 version too.

2. We’ll see more DRM messaging at Gamescom, and there are no plans for rental services. Whatever was said last week will be swept under the rug.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM, with the DRM being Microsoft’s idea. EA and Ubisoft support it, but Activision doesn’t.

4. DRM policies are worse than we know.

5. There will be a Mirror’s Edge 2 at the Microsoft press conference.

6. Prince of Persia will also return for the press conference.

7. Secret Phil Spencer game called The World of Tanks.

8. Xbox Live pay-wall remains.

9. Dead Rising 3 and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game set for the press conference.

Additionally, Cboat has said that there’s no confirmation of the claim that PS4 doesn’t have an online pay-wall, and there’s still no PS4 DRM information. I’d like to reiterate that we’re treating this as a rumor. Let’s see if Cboat is right as always!

283266, so far really mediocre

nothing exciting imo. I actually want to see more on smart glass

283274, RE: For launch and the systems first year I'm impressed
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 12:52 PM
lots of people upset at how soon this new generation is coming out. So show me WHY I should get on board early. Not just a bunch of pretty teasers with cut scenes. Show me the improved kinect or smart glass. This is weak.
283280, 8 years isn't too soon. It's time.
Posted by BigReg, Mon Jun-10-13 12:57 PM
While graphically it might not be worth it, both the 360 and particular the PS3 are lacking in the online department at least compared to some of the features I had fifteen years ago in Gamespy, lol.

Also, it's irksome how even in 2013 they would cut out map sizes, or have less players allowed compared to the PC counterpart in a game like Battlefield for instance.
283284, For real, it used to be every 5 years
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 12:59 PM
This has been the longest between new consoles
283289, then highlight that
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 01:04 PM
so far its pretty new paint jobs on the same old game. The smart glass integration in that one game that I forgot already showed nothing. Deadrising and Ryse were great. More of that and less on the cut scene teasers.
283273, yup.. big yawn
Posted by My_SP1200_Broken_Again, Mon Jun-10-13 12:51 PM
283278, and we have a price
Posted by Boogiedwn, Mon Jun-10-13 12:57 PM
$499
283283, Holy shit. Imagine if Sony comes out at a cheaper price point
Posted by BigReg, Mon Jun-10-13 12:59 PM
LOL
283327, ^sees it
Posted by jetblack, Mon Jun-10-13 02:08 PM
283306, Nintendo will survive this gen...lol...
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Jun-10-13 01:26 PM
Right now for me...$499 is a little too steep for a Killer Instinct remake that I wanted for 360...

Killer Instinct returning opened my eyes to consider it though...
283312, Killer Instinct should be a Live game
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 01:42 PM
graphics did not look good at all.
283318, i haven't seen it...but if it looks as bad as what i'm reading
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Jun-10-13 01:50 PM
then yeah...i agree...

they should have released KI1 and KI2 on Xbox Live anyway...

I feel like Rare and their IP could have been used so much better than what happened to them after the buyout...

283311, oh go to hell microsoft. straight to hell.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-10-13 01:38 PM
283313, ??????
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 01:43 PM
this is reasonable as hell. It was pretty much expected. What did you think, $200?
283320, eh...$400 should have been the price...in my eyes
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Jun-10-13 01:53 PM
500 is too steep...

curious to see if Sony follows suit or try to undercut them...odds are they will say 599...lol

and if that happens...Nintendo will have plenty of time to recover the Wii U fail from this point...release Mario Kart, 3D Mario, and Smash Bros. and they are back in it...

283336, It's borderline
Posted by BigReg, Mon Jun-10-13 02:28 PM
>this is reasonable as hell. It was pretty much expected. What
>did you think, $200?

Pretty much the market has shown it will accept a $400 dollar price point. Upping it to 5 is ballsy because of what a big stumble the PS3 took until they brought it down to $400 bucks or so.

Arguably console prices have been inching up. I don't think the hardcore blinked (as opposed to the few blinks they took with the PS3 price point)

But it's going to be interesting considering the 'new normal' of the economy.

283341, thing is..the hardcore audience has gotten smaller
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Jun-10-13 02:37 PM
and you made all these leaps to try to get the casual audience with Kinect...you can't ask them to pay $500...

They balked at Nintendo asking for $350...lol...you gotta keep the casual players interested...their iPhones and GalaxyS4s are taking them away...

I think $500 is a little too high...also gotta consider that exclusives are very few and far between nowadays...shouldn't be more than $400...make your money back with good software releases...

I could probably get away with just picking one of them...and keep the current gen system for the other...

283343, well production standards are rising too
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 02:40 PM
its becoming more expensive to produce good looking games. But with that i also say that there is no excuse to have shabby looking shit if you paying that much for it. the whole "graphics are second to gameplay" talk needs to die. If im paying more for my games, they better look and play on par with the price.
283352, Graphics are the car frame, game play is the engine.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Jun-10-13 03:21 PM
While the graphics of a game may get you to purchase a game, the game play keeps you playing it. Or maybe I've reached a point where I like for videogames to deliver an experience, not eye candy.

Besides, there's a fine line between launch console graphics and the previous system. I'd like to see what they do with these consoles in 3 years.
283359, this is my point exactly
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 03:33 PM
at this price you better be getting both, no priorities. They cant say well we sacrificed visuals for performance. If im sacrificing $$ you better make it work and not skimp out
283340, it aint shit reasonable about 500
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-10-13 02:35 PM
+ games + XBL + controllers = BULLSHIT.

$399 or bust. that's my buy point.
283326, LMAO. No Blitz. (C) HERMAN CAIN
Posted by jetblack, Mon Jun-10-13 02:08 PM
283385, That's what I expected. Sony will probably be the same.
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Mon Jun-10-13 04:42 PM
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Sony came out at $600. No way they're lower than $500 though.

$500 seems fair considering that's what many people paid for the iPad. Heck, the 360 was $400 at launch (in 2005 dollars) and the Kinect was $150. $500 isn't a lot at all of the system is interesting to you.

Not that I want an Xbox One, but if I did the price being what it is wouldn't give me any pause.
283281, This MS conference is better than I expected, but not enough
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jun-10-13 12:59 PM
for me to consider picking up an Xbox One.

Guess it's on Sony.
283287, my only gripe is im really not WOWED graphically
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 01:01 PM
they dont really blow me away visually like 360 did
283293, yeah they didnt look much better than current games already out
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 01:07 PM
283294, I think for both systems at least at the start of their lifespan
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 01:08 PM
We're not going to be floored for awhile

Don't think it's as big of a jump as we had from the ps3 to ps4 or og xbox to 360.

I'd give it at least two years before we have our holy crap moments
283297, yeah I only got WOW'd by Metal Gear
Posted by Lach, Mon Jun-10-13 01:09 PM
That looked next gen. Everything else was good but not mind blowing.
283315, Id say Battlefield 4 looked very impressive
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 01:46 PM
but not even metal gear made me HOLY SHIT! i remember the COD launch for the 360, i was sold right there by how it looked
283725, It takes a while for them to look sweet.
Posted by jswerve386, Tue Jun-11-13 04:43 PM
When the games that came out on the release date of the 360 they looked just a bit better than the last round of games on the OG Xbox.. Have patience nigga.. They already look a good amount better than the 360 and these are launch titles. Imagine 4-5 years? fuck.
283292, Titanfall could be a system seller.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 01:06 PM
Respawn is comprised of many of the old IW heads
283295, watching it made me want the ai to have the ability
Posted by hardware, Mon Jun-10-13 01:08 PM
to jump into your mech and murder you similar to the way you can. lol
283296, looked amazing
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 01:08 PM
other than that only Deadrising 3 and Ryse were exciting. Plus all 3 had game play.
283300, These reviews could sway my decision.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 01:13 PM
But I hope the base gameplay gets away from the core COD experience. IW has AMAZING polish, but I want something more strategic than a twitch shooter.
283298, That really caught my eye
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 01:10 PM
It's something different which I wanted.
283309, Its coming out on Xbox 360 too though
Posted by HighVoltage, Mon Jun-10-13 01:34 PM
so i dont think it will "sell systems", despite it probably being the best experience
283310, Whoa, did not know that, good looks
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 01:35 PM
283314, so basically $650 plus for system, game, extra controller
Posted by Lach, Mon Jun-10-13 01:45 PM
Welp, gotta get ready for this and PS4. Shoot, I should let my PS3 go. I never ever play it now even with all the free games.
283324, I'mma pass. That money is going towards a Mac Pro.
Posted by jetblack, Mon Jun-10-13 02:07 PM
283316, honestly with all the shit talk on xbox...
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 01:49 PM
...im yet to see anything substantial from ps4. even before this conference. i know i might be jumping the gun but im slowly realizing the fanboyism is real strong out there. I might have to cop both, wonder which is dropping first. I def dont want to make a mistake tho so might skip the launch
283328, might be jumping the gun
Posted by hardware, Mon Jun-10-13 02:14 PM
we'll see tho
283354, There hasn't been, but so much of what we saw* from MS was so bad
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jun-10-13 03:26 PM
It made the PS4 look great by comparison.

* prior to E3
283357, what exactly was bad
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 03:29 PM
and what exactly looks great on ps4? i havent seen anything? this is what im talking about, fanboyism. they gass people up by not showing anything. Using same old game franchises as exclusives etc
283376, People didn't like the forced Kinect, "killing off" used games, needing to
Posted by Marauder21, Mon Jun-10-13 04:06 PM
connect to the internet at least once a day.

Sony hasn't shown anything, but they haven't announced things like that.

I think MS had a better showing today, now that we got some more info (and more importantly, games.)
283319, 2 free games a month UNTIL XBOX One launch
Posted by RobOne4, Mon Jun-10-13 01:52 PM
http://www.uproxx.com/gammasquad/2013/06/microsofts-e3-press-conference-all-the-details/

I would be happy if they gave us a free live game every month or every couple of months. 2 per month is a lot to keep going forever.
283330, I placed my XBOX One pre-order on Amazon
Posted by nipsey, Mon Jun-10-13 02:17 PM
I've been satisfied with MS so I'm gonna stick with them.
283331, When did you pre-order, I thought they haven't opened up the list
Posted by BigReg, Mon Jun-10-13 02:21 PM
Just did it just now and it says delivery is December, lol.

Can't find the PS4 pre-order
283337, yeah I'm gonna do Best Buy instead and get my rewards
Posted by Lach, Mon Jun-10-13 02:28 PM
So I'm waiting for them to open up preorders.
283392, I pr-ordered shortly after they announced the price
Posted by nipsey, Mon Jun-10-13 05:26 PM
during the MS presentation. Just went to Amazon and they had pre-orders open. I picked one day shipping and they gave me a release date of November 30th and a delivery date of December 3rd. Since MS didn't announce a specific date in November, I'm going to assume Amazon just picked November 30th as a placeholder.

283391, Man, I've barely touched 2K13.
Posted by nipsey, Mon Jun-10-13 05:24 PM
Haven't felt inclined to for whatever reason.
283332, PS4 will launch at $500 too, right?
Posted by mrshow, Mon Jun-10-13 02:22 PM
I could see it MAYBE being $450 but I doubt it.
283333, that's my guess
Posted by hardware, Mon Jun-10-13 02:23 PM
$500
283334, It's likely, but I hope it doesn't.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 02:25 PM
I'm sure the Kinect is a big reason why the X1 is $500, but (and I could be wrong) the PS4 doesn't have any outside peripherals right?

Combine that with the non-proprietary architecture and I'm hoping that the PS4 will be cheaper.
283338, I thought PS4 was coming with a new version of the eye too?
Posted by Lach, Mon Jun-10-13 02:29 PM
283339, they are but i pray they make it separate...
Posted by ChampD1012, Mon Jun-10-13 02:31 PM
PS4 shouldn't be more than $400...and if that's the case, that is what i'm rolling with...
283363, it's part of the bundle. The controller
Posted by jetblack, Mon Jun-10-13 03:36 PM
has a 'light bar' similar to the 'Move' controller's 'bulb' for 'motion tracking' in conjunction with the 'PSeye'.

Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 03:36 PM
You're constantly complaining about all these PS4 fanboys but I can only name one so far on this board.

People may have leanings one way or another but most people aren't putting X1 down excessively nor are they hyping up PS4 to ridiculous levels either.

You're projecting here.
283373, who are they? they everywhere. its like mac vs pc
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Jun-10-13 04:01 PM
its more like standards. but really, what is it that you know about ps4 that makes it already better? people are predetermined to hate. I might do ps4 btw because i have a pc rig that ill be using for most microsoft games, but i am really not sure yet. there just isnt enough out there yet to make that call. but everyone already got their knives sharpened.
283381, If they're everywhere but not really here...
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 04:21 PM

283372, Did they announce 64 player?
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 04:01 PM

283375, they had 64 people on stage. said their booth was 64 player too.

its very nice, im not near it to look up specs but plays most games on gigh settings fine no hickups. I might get an even better videocard and see whats up. But if im copping a console regardless im not sure if I should cop on that instead. too many choices...
283374, just got home. Battlefield 4 could get me into an FPS if it's really like that.

And Mirror's Edge 2 looked PRETTY damn good, didn't see any guns in there either which is nice. UFC didn't look as good as the THQ game was but it was just a CG sizzle reel.

Excited to catch up on whatever I've missed so far.

KH1 was ok, KH2 was just FUN FUN FUN...but then there's been like what five games on Nintendo platforms fleshing out the already ridiculous storyline? What am I going to get out of KH3, is it going to assume I know what's been going on? Mass Effect 3 annoyed me enough with references to comics and books I'd never read, not to mention other games lately.

I just don't think online multiplayer should be something you pay for. I think they did the right thing by offering Plus in the first place to show you can have an online service that adds value without just hiding things behind a pay wall.

So much for that.

Do you think they really will be tho? I don't.

283488, The ONLY way they can pull that off
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 09:58 PM
Is if they go the Steam route and offer games digitally for cheap like a month or so after release.

Buddy of mine got Tomb Raider and every last one of the older ones for less than I got my copy from the store.

Now that would be a huge win for them if they can nail deals like that.
283489, They won't be different. Games gonna cost the same.

283545, The announcer was the best thing about that game
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Mon Jun-10-13 10:36 PM
and the fact that the C-C-C-Combo breaker thing became a meme.

Other than that, it was a really weak fighting game.
283669, I know it wasn't in the Street Fighter/MK/Tekken/Soul Edge regime
Posted by ChampD1012, Tue Jun-11-13 01:56 PM
but it was a enjoyable fighter that I played when I was in Middle School at the arcade...

It was getting more play at Aladdin's Castle than the others named above...

And other fighters took some of the good things of KI out of it...including Tekken and MK and even Street Fighter....

Killer Instinct biggest issue was that Nintendo was backing them...and they were trying to change up the image at the time...and then when Rare got bought out by Microsoft...it was over...it was one the best sellers on SNES and N64...so it had a pretty strong following...

But for me...to see the franchise back would be worth it to me to get an Xbox One....but with the price and the fact they gonna charge per character in KI...I lost my interest...

The only game I would miss for Xbox One is Halo and I can get over that pretty quickly...i haven't even found the time to play through Halo 4...lol...

As long as Call of Duty, Madden, UFC, and FIFA are on the PS4..i'll be okay...i'll take Naughty Dog over any first party development company that Microsoft has...
283497, Honestly, I don't either.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 10:03 PM
Even when they offer free games, why would they stipulate it to last only until X1 launches? What a lame way to take the wind out the sails of a great announcement. Sure, they can always continue it if it's a success but why damper the enthusiasm now?

And I'm not sure if they just gave up on 360's XBL, but seriously, does anyone derive a real benefit from the $60/year they're putting into it? The way they've mishandled sales and on-demand gaming doesn't give me hope that they're going to run it well for the next-gen.
283490, Yea, I'm walking away from that with question marks.
Posted by Nodima, Mon Jun-10-13 10:00 PM
This PS conference in general has been balanced by extreme highs and lows, but THAT moment was the most awkward for me. Playstation has thrived on its reliable, free connection to multiplayer gameplay. Assuming I'm someone that really only plays NBA 2K online, is that worth a subscription? No.

That said, the free games are, so if they keep that hot streak up, it's a no brainer. But if the justification ever becomes "play your disc games online" and that's the baseline...I'm bummed out.

I wouldn't have been before this demo. But now that they've established that most EVERYTHING is the same, I'm a little concerned about that possible pay wall.

No that's not true as far as restrictions ONLY 1st party titles are drm free same as MS

http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/11/4419476/playstation-4-third-party-publishers-can-dictate-their-own-drm-terms

Sony was slick in the messaging

3rd party publishes can opt for DRM and you know damn well EA and activision will put a shitload of DRM in every 3rd party title

It's the same shit

It's still got the brand and Microsoft is pretty smart.

It's going to be interesting how this plays out considering both consoles will sell out xmas time.

By the time the post holiday dust settles in 2014 with exclusives, Microsoft perhaps rolling back it's drm...etc.

Either way, im amped for this gen, competition is good for us all.

283526, MS has shown that they clearly do not give a fuck
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Mon Jun-10-13 10:18 PM
so i dont expect them to drop the price. they might need to make a kinect-less base unit to compete on that front but if the $399 includes the PS EYE? sheeeeeit.

and considering DRM was THEIR idea and something THEY took to the publishers, i don't expect them to drop that either.

their hubris is on a million right now and they aint trying to admit that L.
283529, I doubt before launch.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Mon Jun-10-13 10:21 PM
The company is too large to make such a drastic change so quickly.
Lack of sales will ultimately force them to make a change, but it won't be until 2014.
283533, This would be a hilarious concession to Sony.
Posted by wallysmith, Mon Jun-10-13 10:23 PM
But I don't think it's gonna happen for a while... the Xbox brand is STRONG, and there are a number of Xbox heads that would buy the console blind (read: their parents) regardless of anything.

Its why i never understood the piracy issue...sure you could pirate 360 games but then it becomes a motherfucking hassle to play on Live...which was is the basic selling point of the system. The drm was kind of built in, lol.

399 Sun!

283522, So what moves do you think will be made now?
Posted by Paps_Smear, Mon Jun-10-13 10:16 PM
I think PS4 went battle rap style on xbox when they announced no drm and you can play used games. They really stuck up for the consumer in this one and that'll go a long way. A lot of their games were multi-platform but that's ok I didn't look for too many exclusives at launch anyway. Their showing started out blah for me but really turned into something special.

Xbox had me more excited game wise but they really need to do something to counter that used game thing. I never buy em but a lot of people do and it's great to have that option. They're really going to have to show more to justify that price although I think Sony may have just showed us the lesser system for that price.

Was a good first day for e3 though. Didn't expect to go nuts over graphics because the systems are just coming out. I'll save that for the 2nd or 3rd year when the developers really go crazy with it.

I'm excited though. They both have my money already.

283534, at least its not mandatory
Posted by Tw3nty, Mon Jun-10-13 10:23 PM
283536, I've always understood the PS Eye was still an option
Posted by Nodima, Mon Jun-10-13 10:24 PM
Which I have no beef with, because I'm not envious of anything the Kinect offers. Maybe it would be neat to have the option of shouting at my TV, but I don't mind at all using a remote/controller to input functions. Fine by me.

If I were forced to own a PS Eye, I might honestly wait. Only the Swan game has mad eme think having a Move+Eye would be cool; nothing on Kinect has sold me other than Just Dance, but other people are always going to own that so I don't feel pressed to have it.

Their system is $100 more expensive, 50 percent less powerful, restricts used games, and has an expensive premium solution with no games.

Sony has the indie game developers on its side. They are not messing around this time.

Killer Instinct is a day-one digital-only release on Xbox One, and features -- get this -- one character. Jago is free to play on launch day. Everyone else -- unspecified returning characters as well as original fighters -- will cost money. Price is to-be-determined (of course).

it's pretty much 95% of gamers are saying they are getting PS4 and clowning M$
and another 5% are saying they are getting BOTH and they don't understand why M$ is being clowned all over the internetz right now
the reaction so far is VERY pro Sony. it's not really a console war because pretty much everyone agrees that Sony won (as of now)

Posted by Numba_33, Tue Jun-11-13 08:39 AM
Did all three iterations of Playstation have glitches at launch or no? I'm not asking this from an X-Box fan-boy perspective, but I'm genuinely curious. More than likely, I'm going to cop the PS4 when KH3 drops since that's the game that dragging me into the next gen, but I'm curious what the failure rate is for systems coming out the gate.
283601, My launch PS3 died last year. YLOD. 6 years with no issues.
Posted by jetblack, Tue Jun-11-13 08:56 AM
Upgraded the HDD to 500 GB. IT was a solid purchase. $600.

PS one had heat issues...I remember it sometimes needed to flipped upside down.

My PS2 had some minor issues (usually with reading discs) but lasted longer than PS1 and PS3.
283620, same. RIP OG PS3

Even the Wii U. I had to have mine replaced within 5 months. So you're gambling at launch. Best thing to do is get the extended warranty on launch consoles.

Sounds like you've had some unfortunate luck, to use the word loosely. I've either heard or read that if you buy hardware right at its point of release, you are essentially a beta tester. Like I said in my original post, I'm more than willing to wait a couple of months to get the PS4 because I'm mainly getting the system at this post for KH3, and I'm almost certain that won't drop this year, based on its continuous delays.
283635, Couple months? I'm doing a year at least.
Posted by LeroyBumpkin, Tue Jun-11-13 11:09 AM
I waited 2 with the 360 and still got RROD.

>I waited 2 with the 360 and still got RROD.

When ever KH3 drops, that's when I'm plunking down the PS4 dollars, more or less. I'm fortunate GTAV isn't dropping for newer gen only because I'd seriously be conflicted.

Regarding you and others waiting to adopt to the newer gen systems, I'm curious how soon the game makers will abandon making games for PS3 and XBox 360 for the newer gen systems. Aside from how difficulty for coding for the newer systems, what else will come into play with that decision.
283612, I recommend an extended warranty
Posted by HighVoltage, Tue Jun-11-13 10:09 AM
just to get covered and have some assurance.

My horror story was in college when my roomate and I camped out for a 360 at launch.

Im not even kidding when I say the very next morning mine was dead.

Thank god my roomate bought one to, so we just played his, but man, that was NOT cool. Thankfully this was before Microsoft was overwhelmed with the RROD epidemic, so their customer service was lightning fast in getting me a replacement.

The thing is, I'm wary on getting extended warranties because I've read that's how a ton of big chain stores get profits. I'm willing to wait the extra months down the line to get the PS4 because I'm not that big into gaming these days and I'm mainly getting the system to play KH3, which I'm certain won't be coming out by PS4's release date.
283634, thats how they profit because a lot of ppl never need to use warranty

Its like they don't learn from their mistakes.
Do they even want to compete anymore or are they comfortable with what they're doing?

283622, Every couple years we need this shake up
Posted by Paps_Smear, Tue Jun-11-13 10:23 AM
I was a Sony guy hard core with PS1 and PS2
Only copped an Xbox when they announced xbox live and loved their online experience.

360 came out and I enjoyed it more than my PS3. I felt like Microsoft went hard as hell trying to cement their name in gaming history.

Now PS4 gets what they need to do and come out the gate swinging. This competition means the gamers are going to get some special shit.

I can't wait to see what's next.
283626, Agreed.
Posted by wallysmith, Tue Jun-11-13 10:33 AM
Game consoles aside, I'm really really impressed with Sony's ability to do a complete 180 and push hard for the consumer's experience. Remember, Sony is the company that came out with Betamax, MiniDisc, UMD, Memory Stick, Cell architecture, etc. They are the KINGS of proprietary formats... and yet with the PS3 -> PS4 they actually started listening to all the complaints. For a Japanese company this is surprising nimbleness and I hope the competition continues to heat up.

Competition always benefits the consumer.

What you don't understand though is that giving away free games isn't just a service to the consumer... it helps build brand awareness for the publishers/devs as well. This is why Steam is so successful with their sales. Just because someone doesn't buy XCOM now doesn't mean they wouldn't love the next iteration of it... putting free games like XCOM (and that massive list I pasted in the other post) in the hands of gamers that normally would have never bought them means that the franchise will have a bigger userbase for the next go 'round.

These are tried and true business tactics that have been tested in numerous industries. You think that lady giving out pretzels gives a shit about you? FUCK NO. But the cost of those free pretzels is minimal if it means more sales down the line.

Edit: And as for the DRM... why not clarify a bit? PS4 won't have built in DRM, but they'll leave it up to the publishers. So they want to maintain the current status quo. Great, it's understandable that the publishers still want to protect their IP, I have no issues with that. Those $10 pack in codes for online gameplay for new releases? I have no issues with that. But that's not platform (Sony) mandated.

Guess what IS platform mandated though? Arcane selling/borrowing rules associated with 24 hour DRM. It's still too early if this will flop hard (the digital game marketplace will dictate that) but as it currently stands with today's paradigms it is NOT consumer friendly.
283695, i think the point is all these decisions are motivated by money
Posted by hardware, Tue Jun-11-13 02:54 PM

you could argue that Nintendo might care about you
but Sony just wants your angry, principled money
283698, Of course they do.
Posted by wallysmith, Tue Jun-11-13 02:59 PM
I have nothing against making decisions centered around making more money. A lot of the vocal gaming contingent nowadays tend to miss the business aspect most of these companies base their decisions on.

My position is that making money doesn't have to conflict with the interests of the consumer; if the business model is structured properly, then ALL parties can benefit.
283699, but you can see why one may think DRM is a good idea.
Posted by hardware, Tue Jun-11-13 03:06 PM
whether consumers want it or not doesnt really matter when you're dealing with liscensing
as a business they probably feel like they have a responsibility to protect their product as well as minimizing any losses.
283705, Yeah, but at the cost of customer experience?
Posted by BigReg, Tue Jun-11-13 03:20 PM
Im not anti-DRM at all, but I do take umbrage at when my experience is negatively impacted because a company is overstepping to protect their product.

Typing in a 20 digit online code once doesn't bother me for instance.
Not being able to play games I brought because I decided to bring my console along with me on a road trip is gonna suck since I do that alot.

And also, there's been plenty of dancing around calling a spade a spade which makes it more infuriating.

There's been talk of the 'power of the cloud' which is why apparently the Xbone will have to talk to the mothership, but that's bullshit (similar to the Sim City conversation where they claimed how it was 'impossible' for the game to run without being online...except that it runs perfectly fine until it's gotta call back to the server every 30 minutes, lol).

But I mean, we've had this debate more then a few times and surprisingly enough everyone's been pretty 'pro-corporate', lol. Last time I remember everyone was like, 'well, everyone has internet anyway' completely missing the point of the argument.

283706, i'm just playing devil's advocate
Posted by hardware, Tue Jun-11-13 03:29 PM

http://allthingsd.com/20130611/five-questions-about-the-ps4-for-sonys-jack-tretton/

AllThingsD: First off, people seemed really excited at last night’s event when you announced the no-DRM policy, which would allow for freer sharing of games. But this morning there was still confusion, and some countered that there are restrictions on game sharing. Can you offer a simple explanation for how this will work with the PS4?

Any game that is made for PS4 that is physical goods, whether first-party or third-party, can go into a PS4 and play regardless of where it came from. The first player will play it, no problem, the second player will play it, no problem. What I was referring to was the online proposition.

The easiest way to explain it is — if you understand how it works on PlayStation 3, then that’s the same way it will work on PlayStation 4. No changes there. We’ve been out for six and a half years. It’s the same experience.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57588742-93/why-sony-did-the-opposite-of-microsoft-on-used-games-q-a/

Did you go back and forth on that decision? Was that something you considered, to do the same thing as Microsoft?

Tretton: I think there's always a debate in the industry about the effects of the after-market. I remember many years ago people thought rental was a threat. People would rent a video game. They'd play it. They'd finish it. They'd never go out and buy it. I think in recent years, people have perceived that used games might be a threat. But I think that there's also a position that says No. 1, it adds to the value of the consumer and the price they're willing to pay for a new copy of the game.
283736, so then X1 games SHOULD be cheaper.
Posted by BrooklynWHAT, Tue Jun-11-13 05:59 PM

283738, yeah, it's the potential of the platform, up to M$ to deliver on it now
Posted by celery77, Tue Jun-11-13 07:15 PM
but seriously lol @ everyone who thinks the used games market is "pro-consumer."

it isn't. it's pro- one TYPE of consumer (the used game buyer/seller, who if we're being honest only Gamestop cares about retaining). the Sony CEO is telling you RIGHT THERE. the cost of the used games market is built into the 1st sale price on the game by the developer.

if you're not a used game buyer/seller, then the M$ model will most likely BENEFIT you. that's not spin. like I said, Sony CEO is telling you right there...
283742, how often do they deliver currently?
Posted by Nodima, Tue Jun-11-13 07:49 PM
just curious since I don't own an XBox and never hear about huge digital sales. PSN already often does deep discount stuff, especially for Plus users. Their E3 lineup this week is HUGE:

XCOM: Free
Dishonored $22
BLOPS II $38
MGR: Revengeance $30
RE6 $18
PS All-Stars $14
NBA 2K13 $29.50
FIFA 29.50
Far Cry 3 $29
Borderlands 2 $20
Assassin's Creed 3 $20
Sound Shapes $3.75
Quantum Conundrum $3.75
Guardians of Middle Earth 3.75
Unfinished Swan 3.75
Hell Yeah! 3.75
Walking Dead Season One $5
Dishonored DLC $10 total

From what I've seen over the past two years, Sony is already deep in the discount game, and ALWAYS hit big with whatever gets designated as free, whether it's first party games getting a second wind like the inFamous and Little Big Planet series' or major third party titles to hype the newest in the series/developers' line of titles like Resident Evil 5 or Uncharted 3.

Literally all I know about XBox's services is that they cost money to access, so if they do all that same kind of stuff then kudos to them.

283743, XBL offers sales, increased DRM control would presumably increase it
Posted by celery77, Tue Jun-11-13 07:58 PM
I coulda had AC3 for $20 pretty recently, I think? they put the whole Assassin's Creed series on sale sometime in the last few months -- they had a few weeks, a Halo week, like a Capcom week, an Assassin's Creed week. sales aren't exclusive to PSN.

and none of that really has anything to do with the fact that the used game market per the CEO of Sony is COST-ADDED to the 1st sale price of a game. never mind all the other fanboy shit -- removing the used games market (which M$ is clearly pushing) removes cost from the 1st sale price of a game. whether developers/publishers push that savings on to the consumers won't be known till the shit hits the market, but the potential to be more dynamic in pricing with a DRM heavy format clearly exists (see: Steam).

M$ has the POTENTIAL to deliver on that. Sony is just leaving their publishers to take the heat as they do the same shady, back-door shit like they're doing this generation where they require users to pay $5 for online activation codes and shit.

every business is "pro consumer", and why are they pro consumer? cause they're "pro profit"...no such thing as anything else when you break it all down......people say they hate gamestop but they make ALOT of money every year, so SOMEBODY is going....and saying Gamestop is the only one interested in the used game market is bs, i've seen used games at Target and Best Buy, and even Toy's R Us trying to tap a lil bit into that big market, and i'm sure there are more places....

the whole argument you present is kind of silly though...OF COURSE Microsoft and Sony want the person buying the new game to spend as much as possible, why wouldn't they...the fact i'd pay about $70-$80 to cop GTA5 doesn't really change the fact that some other people would rather wait a couple months and try to buy it used for $40-50....those two tangents don't change because the creator claims they're customer friendly...it's a constant because of the level of need to have that product from an individual....charging more for the game doesn't change shit for someone who was never gonna buy at "regular" price anyway, what it can do though, is make the person being charged more have second thoughts, which none of them want....

fuckin Nomura man. dude is a beast. dawn of a new era for Final Fantasy.

details from the Livestream (cribbed from GAF)
-They shifted the game to next-gen and made it a mainline title due to the scale/scope.
-The game is an action RPG, but there are command system elements in the game.
-Noctis is "not cool inside" and not a cool dude, but a quirky dude.
-Party members are a core part of Final Fantasy, so there is a party in this game.
-Noctis can teleport himself into the sky. Though he's not a gravity wizard, Noctis does not fall at a Newtonian rate for gameplay purposes.
-The current generation console versions were canceled about a year ago. They're still working to improve the graphics on the next-gen version.
-They are making games in DirectX 11 on PC and then porting them to the PS4 and Xbox One since they can handle that. They can consider any platform that support high end DirectX 11 level hardware functionality and horsepower. (Hey Square, that DX11 PC dev platform you mentioned earlier can run this! Just saying!)

Airship or some type of home base
Grinding for rare items and materials
minigames on par with FF7 and FF8
Totally unbeatable optional bosses
The ability to buy weapons and armor and customize both
Characters that are unique from each other (i.e good at magic, good at combat, good with guns)

Do not cater to the CoD/xbot crowd and make this a simple ass hack and slash rpg.

especially the first two. that's just what i think though.

but it's basically what Nomura would want a modern day FF to be. and i like his vision.

"Yes, it is an action-based RPG. There’s not much turn-based style in it, but if you look carefully in the trailer, the command system is on the screen, as well, so we tried to keep a Final Fantasy taste. But we are not trying to make it an action-only game. Making the game Final Fantasy is the most important thing. I want everyone to imagine if Final Fantasy would be an action game—this is what it would be."

It looks great and everything, but at the end of the day, whether this game succeeds or not will come down to gameplay and (to a lesser extent) characters & story. They can make it look flashy and stylish, but if the gameplay is of FFXIII or Dirge of Cerberus standards, then what's the point? I sincerely hope they can get it right though...

wont charge me until it ships in case I change my mind.

I plan on getting an Xbox One after first price cut and want to see how the whole DRM situation shakes out. I do think MS has the better exclusives at the moment, but PS4 is the cheaper and safer play, so thats it for me.

MS keeps positioning themselves as set up for the next decade, but I think their vision is going to take a few years to catch on, so I dont need to be an early adopter to that platform.

Would be a MUCH harder decision if I didnt have the intention of buying both at some point.
283769, No online passes for games on PS4 (swipe)

According to this Giant Bomb interview:

http://www.giantbomb.com/podcasts/sony-s-scott-rohde-answers-your-burning-ps4-questi/1600-504/

I feel like that's fair. Companies can't double down and charge you for the game then charge you again when you're already paying to play online.

I'm guessing MS is going to do this as well (it wouldn't make sense to charge a used game fee plus an online pass fee on top of that, right??) but I'm glad Sony clarified that they aren't because that was my worry.

but at the same time is incredibly ambitious by having the integrated TV show with live actors within the game (and having that change based on decisions you make in the game).

The story / action is shaping up to be great, and while I would normally be skeptical of the premise, this is Remedy were talking about so I have full faith in them.

Still, there's so many confusing points they made while trying to explain the "revolutionary" storytelling concept of the game.

I think they would have been much better off just showing us more of the game and how this all works together in the package and just let it speak for itself.

But if the game the lives up to what Remedy is capable of doing, I think this might become a darkhorse system-seller for the XB1.

**Players are "self-supported tactical agents"; players are let loose in the game with 72 hours of supplies in their backpacks (food, ammunition, basic weapons)--from there on, they must find new food/water and upgrades**

**Completing quests can affect the game world significantly**. Example given: once the police station is secured, the police can return to patrol the streets and make the area more safe

**Big part of the game: "Saving what remains"**; examples given are "bringing back power, cleaning water, making sure police can protect civilians"

**There is a metagame** that will affect all players in the game world when certain quests are completed, while some quest effects are "just for you and your friends" (no more is said here)

**Matchmaking will involve some kind of criteria entry where players can be matched up with other similar players** ("right skillset for you")--this may seem unremarkable but the example given involves finding other players who have children, so that they'll be more understanding if you have to take a quick 5 min afk for a crying baby

**PVP**: PVP will occur in "the Dark Zones", areas that have been "hit the hardest with virus...have very little communication", etc. Three main zones outlined: Social Hub, Singleplayer/Co-op areas, and Dark Zones. **All areas are seamless, no loading screens required.**

* There will be both PvP missions and PvE missions in the dark zones. There will be "many many groups playing" in each zone.

E3 2013: The Order: 1886’s Obsession With Alternate History
And you thought the 19th century was dire in real life.

by Colin Moriarty June 12, 2013

PlayStation 4 is getting perhaps its most intriguing exclusive from a very unlikely source. Ready at Dawn, the Sony-affiliated (but technically independent) developer, well known for its God of War games on PSP, has made the great leap from handheld to console. The Order: 1886 is the result, an alternate history take on 19th century England that merges a familiar and well-worn setting with unique technology and a mysterious, monster-like foe.

In a conversation with IGN, Ready at Dawn co-founder and creative visionary behind The Order: 1886 -- Ru Weerasuriya – explained a great deal about his upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive, including what it’s about and where the inspiration for the game comes from.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/06/10/order-1886-e3-announcement-trailer

At the PlayStation E3 press conference, we caught our first glimpse of The Order: 1886. It was an unfortunately brief moment that left us with more questions than answers, but believe it or not, the entire cutscene is captured in-engine. Weerasuriya promised that The Order’s actual look was very reminiscent of what we saw in that crisp trailer. “This is what you can expect when the game comes out,” he said.

The Order is about as far from a handheld game as possible. Indeed, from the looks of it, it’s a bona fide triple-A next-gen title. Not surprisingly, Ready at Dawn’s plan was always to take on a project this ambitious, broad, and complicated. “We’ve been wanting to scale up for a long time, to do something that we’ve wanted to do from the very beginning, when we started the company ten years ago,” Weerasuriya admitted.

Before Ready at Dawn jumped into creating The Order, the studio “never felt like everything aligned” to undertake such a project. “We never felt like the team, the technology, the hardware, and the idea, we never felt until now, until 2010, right around then, when we started having conversations about the PS4, that’s when we felt like, funny enough, this is the right time.”

In an age where exclusives from outside of a hardware manufacturer’s first party are becoming increasingly rare, The Order stands out. Then again, Ready at Dawn has established a long-time working relationship with Sony Santa Monica, which will help the much smaller studio bring its game to the masses, even if that studio isn’t owned outright by Sony.

“I never wanted to pigeonhole ourselves as being, you know, we’re just going to do one thing, we’re just going to be a first party, work with first party,” Weerasuriya confessed. “There’s always the question of what’s best, right? And the beauty of our relationship with Sony was that they’ve always done something that was right for us… it always felt like they always understood us. And we always understood them in some ways.”

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/06/11/the-order-1886-ign-rewind-theater-e3-2013

And it was with that in mind that an exclusive next-generation title made sense. “The jump to PS4 was a conscious decision, knowing that we could get the best out of a single piece of hardware. Our team is that kind of team. They can concentrate on one piece of hardware and take the most out of it, like we did for PSP” when the studio created Daxter and the two handheld God of War games.

The Order: 1886 is a third-person action adventure game that relies a great deal on battling with futuristic-looking guns, as seen during the latter half of the trailer. However, Weerasuriya noted that The Order doesn’t rely on a “single tone.” It will deliver different kinds of gameplay experiences and combat situations in its campaign, which is story-driven and linearly delivered.

In The Order, players take control of Galahad, the bearded male prominently displayed in the game’s lone trailer. However, there are three other characters in the game that are part of his group, not surprisingly known as The Order. In the game’s lore, The Order’s existence spans a millennium of alternate history, as humanity finds itself in perpetual combat with a mysterious, decidedly inhuman force.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/06/bmuploads2013-06-124466the-order-1886fire-squad1373jpg-50eb2c_640w.jpg

“The Order is the group that has been watching over mankind,” Weerasuriya said, and the tides have recently turned in their favor following humanity’s headlong stumble into the Industrial Revolution. With all-new weapons at their disposal, humans have finally been able to hold their own against this mysterious threat, and it’s at this point that The Order: 1886 begins in earnest.

But where did such a strange idea come from? Where did Ready at Dawn come upon this alternate history plot? Weerasuriya explained. “The idea came from a lot of places. Of course, it takes a team to build an IP. A big part of the original genesis of the project was ideas that I have been toying with for a long time. I’ve always wanted to write something that was less created, as in I could make anything I wanted to. I was always thinking of how much better we could make things if it was grounded in the reality that people knew.”

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/06/bmuploads2013-06-124467the-order-1886galahad-command0645jpg-50eb30_640w.jpg

“The genesis was really about trying to build on the common consciousness of people, like the things they know. But what if the things they know weren’t really the way they thought they were?”

Things in The Order: 1886 are certainly not as you would think. The Industrial Revolution happened in the 19th century as it does in actual history, but the results of the revolution were different. Weerasuriya emphasized “the suspension of disbelief” in the story, because things like The Order’s firearms are incredibly advanced, while normal folks use horses and carriages to get around.

Meanwhile, there are blimps and zeppelins floating in the air decades before they were actually invented. In this way, The Order relies on a hodgepodge of elements that don’t necessarily fit together, but don’t quite look awkward alongside one another, either. Weerarsuriya believes that this combination of elements makes sense if you make the world around it believable. “If you sell it to people, if you show it to people, they’ll believe it,” he said.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/06/10/ign-news-ready-at-dawn-announces-the-order-1886

That realism transcends the characters in the game. Real people from history are set to appear in The Order: 1886, though that doesn’t necessarily mean that those people will be as they are in the real historical timeline. When asked if a character like Jack the Ripper would appear in the game, considering the game at least partially takes place in the London district of Whitechapel during the decade when the Ripper’s murders took place, Weerasuriya was evasive.

What Weerasuriya was decidedly candid about was his game’s complex mythology and backstory. “There have been a lot of branches in this history that have happened very early on, way before 1886,” he said. “The big change that really happens and the reason why we picked 1886 is the change that happened during the Industrial Revolution… the moment where the most amazing minds in the history of humanity, where man basically changed from an agricultural society to an industrial society… we used that as a catalyst for something else, this war that was going on for a long time was stagnating. As a matter of fact, humans were losing the war for a long time. And the Industrial Revolution allows man to basically get weaponry that finally puts the advantage in their hands.”

The Order is a group that has a presence the world over – “the IP is broad,” Weerasuriya noted – but 1886 will take place entirely in England. “I’m a history buff, I love the Victorian era,” he later continued, noting that late-19th century Britain was the perfect place and time for a game that melds so many different, conflicting elements. Just don’t call it steampunk.

http://oyster.ignimgs.com/wordpress/stg.ign.com/2013/06/bmuploads2013-06-124469the-order-1886parliament0189jpg-30baf7_640w.jpg

“We didn’t want to make it to the point where it felt too futuristic. That’s why we wanted to stay away from steampunk. It’s not that far, it’s not ,” he noted. “We picked this moment because it felt right visually, it felt right contextually, it felt right for everything we wanted to build.” Bladerunner and From Hell were two licenses that Weerasuriya admitted helped influence the game, especially the latter, “where you see the dark, gritty side of London.

The Order: 1886 is a ways out yet; neither Weerasuriya nor Sony would confirm when the game was slated to be released for PlayStation 4. But in the meantime, will Ready at Dawn ever return to its handheld roots, perhaps with a Vita iteration of God of War?

“We’ve never said no to anything. Our company is a one-game-at-a-time company, we’re not going to split off and do multiple things. Our technology does run on Vita, we’ve always made sure that our technology always kept up with anything that was out there. So, maybe? All I can tell you is maybe.”

I want to play the next Pokémon and an HD Wind Waker but sure as hell don't want to buy another Nintendo system.

283876, I don't know, man

I was just talking with someone about this the other day.

On the one hand, it makes sense. Nobody wants to buy a whole new console that they'll only turn on every time a new first party game comes out. If my PS4/Xbone can do everything and then some that a Nintendo console can except play Super Mario 3D World, then it would be better for gamers if they went third party.

But on the other hand, I like that there's still one console manufacturer that's a game company that doesn't see gaming as just another facet of their giant multinational. I'd be sad to see Nintendo go, they're like the last link to the days before bro-gamers took over.

Again, I realize this is just me and it's almost entirely based on emotions rather than cold hard logic, but still.
283939, Nah, I understand that 100%

I was sad to see Sega go, too, but once I realized that it would be one less system to buy I felt much better.

Some of those games I'd love to play. I'm not paying for a Wii U just to play the very few that I do.

Been let down by Nintendo for awhile though. I'd hate to see them shut down shop because when I was a kid and it came out that was the shit. It was a status symble to have that fucker. Nintendo just screams video games. But man they fuckin up now. Maybe that would be the best thing for them to go the 3rd party route.
283884, its weird cause they're handheld titles go hard

obviously thats a different market
but a bunch of these games are better than a lot of console games
283893, they put focus on the 3DS way more than the Wii U...
Posted by ChampD1012, Fri Jun-14-13 01:57 PM
hopefully that flips in 2014...

Looks like the big Wii U titles are coming then...

Mario Kart and Smash Bros...

283894, I bought a Wii U knowing that Nintendo is never gonna give it up
Posted by ChampD1012, Fri Jun-14-13 02:02 PM
They just aren't...

People will wait for the price drop and then they will pick up the system with Mario, Zelda, and Metroid...it never fails...

Their issue this year is that they kinda mailed it in...

They are out of touch with their fanbase...and they delayed alot of releases...

Pikmin 3 was suppose to be a launch window title...
Retro should have been working Metroid and not DKC and I love the DKC series...
Mario Kart should have been released this year...
And that Mario Game should have been Mario Galaxy 3...not a rehash of Mario 3D Land on 3DS...

Pressure is mounting for them but they can afford to wait this out...they aren't nearly in the situation that Sega was in when they had to get out of the console business...they won the console wars last gen!...lol

you buy 5 of every video game console/game/peripheral that comes out.

But MS has dropped the ball every single way possible with the xbox one announcement. All this out of context information leaks out about their system and they do nothing to keep people from taking the info and going crazy with it. By the time E3 came out they already lost the hearts and minds of people. Not to mention the bad info the xbox support twitter account is passing on as well. I dont think the $100 higher price point is huge. But throw that in with the PR nightmare that has been happening and still happening online it definitely might hurt them.
283984, lol yeah I was getting it either way

but once you get past the whole DRM situation, I like what they're offering. What's funny tho is that mostly the hardcore gamers are complaining and they'll still be the ones buying it anyway.

283983, New Xbox 'a sin against all service members'
Posted by eellsber, Tue Jun-18-13 10:35 AM
As a former service member (Army) I can feel their (potential) pain.
____________________________________________________________________

Navy Lt. Scott Metcalf was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Xbox One. Now he’s not even sure if he’ll buy one.

Indeed, for many in the military, the next-gen Xbox console may offer more endemic frustration than grand epic gaming, particularly for those deployed downrange, aboard ships and stationed overseas.

Xbox One, Microsoft’s much-anticipated new console, got its big reveal at the Electronic Entertainment Expo gamers’ convention in Los Angeles. Company honchos are confident it will come to dominate living rooms over the next decade not only as the gaming delivery vehicle of choice, but also with a barrage of other content, including a suite of apps, streaming video and music.

There’s one big but, however: To get all this entertainment awesomeness, the console will have to check in online with the Microsoft mothership at least once a day.

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection,” an Xbox spokesperson tell Military Times.

Showstoppers
Metcalf called that a “showstopper” for any service members who rely on their Xbox for off-duty diversions downrange, in the field, or at sea.

Which is to say, just about everyone.

And it gets worse for on-the-go troops. The Xbox One:

■ Can play only in Xbox One-friendly countries. Even if you’re lucky enough to have a regular, reliable Internet connection while overseas, you’ll have to be in one of 21 countries included in Microsoft’s server network. So, if you’re stationed in, say, Germany, Italy or Great Briatin, you’re good to go. But if you’re based in Japan, Kuwait or Afghanistan, you’re out of luck.

■ Will have region-locked games. Games bought in the U.S. can be activated only in the U.S. That means no more ripping open the latest title that just arrived in a care package from home while you’re deployed. And forget about buying games locally when overseas — if your Xbox Live account isn’t tied to the region when you activate a game, it won’t play.

■ Serious security concerns. Even when the Xbox One is in sleep mode, its built-in microphone can always listen in. It’s a feature developers say will provide quick voice-command access to games and apps — but that could spook commanders who might worry the always-connected device could also capture more than just idle chit-chat among troops.

“Microsoft has single handedly alienated the entire military. And not just the U.S. military — the militaries of the entire world,” says naval aviator Jay Johnson.

The Internet connection requirement is “the single greatest sin Microsoft has committed against all service members,” he writes in a post on the game developers’ site Gamasutra.

With tours aboard three Nimitz-class aircraft carriers, Johnson says he’s spent more than half of the past three years deployed or training at sea. He describes gaming in general and his Xbox in particular as “my sanctuary. It is where I went to calm down after a long day of flying.”

But that won’t be true with the Xbox One, he says.

“No longer will the sounds of Master Chief saving the human race echo through the hallowed halls of the USS Abraham Lincoln, or any other USS ship, when we have a few hours respite. No longer will you see Marcus and Dom sawing through the Locust Horde at the bases in Afghanistan after the Marines have returned from patrol and want to escape their reality for a bit. Those days are now firmly behind us.”

Microsoft: Sucks to be you
Not to fear, says Xbox exec Don Mattrick, president of the Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment division. The company has a solution for those in the military: Just use the old Xbox 360 instead.

“Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity, it’s called Xbox 360. If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device,” Mattrick told Game Trailer at E3 in an interview posted online.

He says he feels your pain, though.

“When I read the blogs and thought about who’s really the most impacted, there was a person who said, “Hey, I’m on a nuclear sub.’ I don’t even know what it means to be on a nuclear sub, but I’ve got to imagine that it’s not easy to get an Internet connection. Hey, I can empathize. If I was on a sub, I’d be disappointed.”

OFFduty asked Microsoft officials if that empathy might translate into practical workarounds for the military.

“I don’t have additional details to share and can’t speculate on workarounds at this time,” wrote Xbox rep Danica Stickel in an emailed response to questions, repeating the suggestion that troops could just use the 360 instead.

“Although we’re very excited about Xbox One, we remain dedicated to Xbox 360 now and for years to come. In fact, we are expecting some of the greatest blockbusters of 2013 and 2014 to come out on Xbox 360.”

She did offer some encouragement for Xbox One hopefuls, however, saying the regional lock restrictions aren’t much different from other content protections.

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games and other content must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale — which means that games will work in the broad geographic regions for which they have been cleared, much as today with Xbox 360,” Stickel wrote.

“While the console itself is not geographically restricted, a user’s Xbox Live account, content, apps and experiences are all tied to the country of billing and residence,” she wrote.

“Military personnel will be able to take their Xbox One and play their games with them without an issue as long as the game has been ‘activated’ once in the U.S. Your games go with you and play, no issues,” she says.

Stickel also downplayed security concerns over the console’s always-on microphone or built-in Kinect video camera.

“When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded,” she says. “You will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options.”

But even those outside the military have been surprised by Micosoft’s shrug to the military community, with some speculating it will fuel a wider surge toward Sony’s Playstation console.

“This is shameful, says Joel Hruska, a writer for Extreme Tech website. “Telling troops that you ‘empathize’ with them is both embarrassing and hands Sony perfect ammunition.”

“Do I think Microsoft is going to change?” writes Hruska in a recent post. “Honestly, no. The remarks that’ve come out to date paint a picture of a company that’s so drunk on its own Kool-Aid, they aren’t listening to outside criticism or commentary any longer.”
