While it could be the case that other Anons are acting by themselves," reads a statement on the Anonymous news site, "AnonOps was not related to this incident and does not take responsibility for whatever has happened."

An alternate possibility, suggests the statement, is that Sony is using Anonymous' previous attacks as a scapegoat "to distract users from the fact that the outage is actually an internal problem with the company's servers."

254671, they were attacking as late as last week
Posted by B9, Fri Apr-22-11 01:24 PM

254781, What makes PSN more vulnerable than XBL? $50/yr?
Posted by jdub1313, Sun Apr-24-11 01:51 PM
it can't be as simple as that. and by simple I mean $50/yr = more firewalls, network security personell, etc.

did Sony bring this on themselves with that whole GeoHot situation?

Could Anon do the same to XBL if they wanted to?

Why now? both services have been up and running for at least 5 years.

Anybody care to speculate?

as a multimedia hub for the bedroom or purchasing an apple tv. The mini is already in the bedroom at my desk. I just need to get the appropriate cables to connect to the HDTV. I think the mini has a mini DVI connection. I bought this mini about a year and a half ago. Its a dual core Intel mini. Right now it's hooked up to my monitor via mini DVI to VGA. The plan is to use the mini as a media center and kick the PS3 to living room once my brother's TV comes in. He gave me his 50 inch beast when he upgraded his living room. Aw yeah.

Imagine my 'excitement' when I came across this PSN issue Saturday...

I have been so off the scene lately, it ain't even funny. Moving into a house solo is jokeless. As of Saturday, I had FINALLY moved into my first house, unpacked everything except old game systems and random stupid stuff that isn't getting unpacked ever (my CDs and old VHS tapes for instance..VHS = wrestling, old shows, & poan), broken down wardrobe boxes and alla dat. All of my appliances have been delivered and are function. My new TV (55" Panny Plasma 3D 1080) is FINALLY up and running AND on a stand that I don't love but I'm over it..Craigslist is my friend damnit...hell, I even threatened wack ass Comcast enough to get them out there on a HOLIDAY SATURDAY after they hit me with a a no-call/no-show combo the Thursday night before Good Friday. You know I was Super Saiyan hot at the house Thursday night with no innanet or cable after waiting all evening for them lames. Can't watch the game, can't work, can't get the new Prodigy, can't write long ass posts on OKP, nothing!

Anyway, its now Saturday at 2 PM and my 55" Panny Plasma 3D joint is looking lovely with the Bulls game on. I can't wait to see how a calibration and window treatments make that thing shine. Its already a beast at night...moving on...my washer has been hiked up to the third floor (townhome..hey, its still a house). My cable and innanet is up and runnin. The Bulls almost pulled a comeback to complete the sweep with Rose limpin. I got stuff to do still, but for now, I'm chillin. This is finally starting to feel like my damn house and its on. Now its time to play some Skreet Fighter or Fight Night, which I waited to play until this very moment of bliss. I go to turn on the PS-triple and setup my new 20 Megawhatever, fast as hell, wireless innanet connection. Playstation Network is down..what!? Awwwww!

I go to my laptop and get online only to find clouds of clowns, seas of Gs...all pissed off at PSN being down and Sony copping pleas. They almost got it back up and running. Riiight. And it had been down since Wednesday!? Wow.

Meanwhile, my dead ass XBox sits downstairs in its OG box with a stack of (decent) games in another taped up box and a slew of spare cables around it. Maybe 90 bones to get it replaced ain't so bad, and the pros (this for the radio, duke?) would love that Kinnect, wouldn't they? Ahhh...what a rush!

Posted by CondoM, Mon Apr-25-11 10:12 PM
I'm tempted to renew my Xbox Live membership. Sadly the only decent online game I have is MW2, which I can't really go back to after BC2.

Just downloaded Crysis 2 though on my little M11xR2, surprised at how well it runs. Hopefully it'll keep me occupied until PSN is back up. If not, I've still got a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat laying around somewhere.
254880, Apparently someone was stealing.
Posted by Kira, Mon Apr-25-11 10:48 PM
I'm not swiping a damn thing.

People allegedly used custom firmware modifications to steal PSN content.

I just wonder how much content was stolen to warrant a PSN shutdown.
254891, Then your story lacks credibility.
Posted by muzuabo, Tue Apr-26-11 05:19 AM
Clearly you're fine with that.
254897, Nah, it's got some legs
Posted by BigReg, Tue Apr-26-11 07:42 AM
>Clearly you're fine with that.

Cause the Anon attacks were against their webservers. Like B9 said it's a possibility they would have taken everything down to make it stronger against DOS attacks, but a week? It's gotta be a bigger deal. Only think I case think of...actual theft:

http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/onepercent/2011/04/playstation-services-offline-a.html

"One suggestion, put forward on Reddit by a moderator of PlayStation hacking site PSX-Scene.com who goes by the name chesh420, suggests that Sony has taken its servers offline to prevent "extreme piracy of PSN content".

He claims that a piece of unofficial firmware, known as Rebug, allows users to gain access to the private PlayStation developer network. This also allows users to purchase games and other content for free using fake credit card numbers, since Sony doesn't check the authenticity of the numbers on the private network. He suggests Sony has shut down the PSN servers to secure them against this exploit.

These claims have not been verified, but New Scientist has seen instructions on PlayStation hacking forums for using the Rebug firmware to download free content, suggesting that the exploit is indeed possible.

Sony's lack of details on the cause of the outage has also lead to speculation that attackers may have gained access to users' credit card details. Sony spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka told PC World that the company hadn't yet determined whether such details have been compromised."
254902, why are people copping pleas tho?
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Tue Apr-26-11 09:13 AM

no. you should be.
free online was what you guys were touting when you bought it.
IT'S FREE ONLINE. ENJOY PAYING 50 BUCKS A MONTH, TRASHBOX360 FANBOYZ. LULZ.
now that the free online is down indefinitely, you try to blow it off?
i thought that was a bullet point in your reason for purchasing it.

nope.

hold these corporations accountable.
you can talk shit about the RROD but there was enough public uproar to force M$ to do something about it.

luckily i don't even fucks with my ps3 that much or i'd be pissed. i'm generally on my pc and 360 but my roommate is fucked.

blame the hackers all you want.
but the onus is on sony to make sure their servers are secure.

if yall niggas don't get a free month of psn+ or a free game out of this, i'd be pissed.
254905, You're right, but its nothing on the scale of RROD

play games like that, but still

254907, I was thinking about this over the weekend
Posted by B9, Tue Apr-26-11 10:10 AM
actually, on Friday, when I was firing up all these old games that quickly became boring but each had a ton of version updates that had to be installed (and were). If the games could connect to the developers servers for the updates, what is the strategic advantage for Sony to have their network host multiplayer? Shouldn't the actual developers host, thereby taking full responsibility for the sort of hacks and security issues that have destroyed the playablity of games like Modern Warfare? They could also implement far more control over security and glitch updates than putting PSN in the middle of everything.

I'm sure there is a very blunt reason this isn't the case, but it made sense to me at the time.
254908, MONEY.
Posted by BigReg, Tue Apr-26-11 10:21 AM
>I'm sure there is a very blunt reason this isn't the case, but
>it made sense to me at the time.

I mean right now for 95% of all online games one of the consoles serves as the server anyway for the actual gameplay; outside of matchmaking, basic communication connectivity and feeding minor info (achievements! scores!) to a mother brain a PSN or Xbox Live isn't needed. But PSN/Xbox Live serves to peddle you products *shrug*.

It's imho one of the biggest things we allowed the companies to take away from us. Ten years ago a company would release a game, fans would throw up their OWN computers as servers, and a community would live on until the last person decided to take theirs off line...there's still hella QUAKE servers alive. We won't even get into the developers being able to easily patch and continually upgrade their product easily. We've pretty much given up all our power just to be able to cross chat and have achievements.

254912, ^^^

254909, Yeah, we accept corporations fucking us in the ass in 2011
Posted by BigReg, Tue Apr-26-11 10:23 AM
There is NO reason for PSN to be down outside of Sony protecting their own ass. When Modern Warfare 1, one of their most popular games, became hack central, they didn't give a fuck.

Second someone figured out a way to get a free games tho, they shut that bitch down for a week plus, lol.

254910, I have both and I'm mad
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Apr-26-11 10:24 AM
Free or not you play for games with online multiplayer and you go a week with out that shit?! There isn't even an ETA on when it will be up and no info whatsoever.

I'm on my 9th 360 and won't argue they should have stepped their game up waaaay before that but if Live went down I was well informed. PSN has gotten a lot of money from me and the least they could do is keep me informed.
254915, I'm only really slightly peturbed
Posted by Kira, Tue Apr-26-11 11:37 AM
I better get some free stuff out of this.

I've got Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, Tomb Raider Trilogy and Red Dead to finish. I will manage this PSN downtime.

My only legit complaint is that I've got $200K worth of Uncharted 2 money that cannot be redeemed at the present time.

PLAYSTATION®NETWORK STATUS UPDATE

Tokyo, April 26, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) today announced that the PlayStation®Network for the PlayStation®3 (PS3®) computer entertainment system has had it's most successful week ever as it becomes a worldwide talking point.

The PlayStation®Network has been one of the most discussed topics in recent days through stories on television and a high volume of discussion on the social networking website Twitter.

Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf, the new head of misdirection for SCEI, stated: "There are no problems with the Playstation®Network for the PlayStation®3 system".

"In fact, the public discussion surrounding the Playstation®Network for the PlayStation®3 system just goes to show how much people want to use it, showing what a successful problem," he added.

"The whole idea of the Playstation®Network is to allow gamers to connect - not to play games, like some people have said this week - and no event has done it like this. Everyone is joining together to express their want for the Playstation®Network™!"

SCEI requests users who want to use the Playstation®Network for the PlayStation®3 system and Playstation®Portable™ Console®™˛ remain patient as they will be updated after a period of time before the end of days happens and all life in the universe is consumed.

Like the whole 'Thank god for my Xbox!' is a bit extra.

At the same time, how are they going to stop you from accessing features you paid for.
Like I said above, it's not as if you NEED psn to get online; it's why people are still rocking Netflix and getting game updates.

If Sony/Microsoft makes a portal MANDATORY to access the features of your game(which they have no involvement in), they better make sure that shit is up pretty much 24-7. Having them shut it down for a week because of their messup (cause it's not as if there aren't hella hackers trying to get other companies credit card info right about now), with no word...considering motherfuckers credit card info might be out there? Inexcusable.

And y'all are like 'Oh well, ill just play the singleplayer, thanks Sony!' There are plenty of games that are pretty much all multiplayer, just cause you happen to don't play them doesn't mean it's all good. Fuck that.

And yeah it's 'FREE' but it's still ultimately a service you paid for: by buying the PS3 and by buying the software.

I don't get how we grew to be cool with fucked by the large corporate dick as customers. It's a pattern that spreads beyond videogames

or RRODs so quit bringing it up to justify your purchase or non-purchase. Also the fact that you don't play online means nothing since your credit card info might be compromised. This is part of what you plopped your money down for when you bought the system so it's okay to not feel a portion of the experience not working.

254979, Basically
Posted by Marauder21, Wed Apr-27-11 08:21 AM
I have a 360, was planning on getting a PS3 sometime in the next six months (Twisted Metal.) I was in Best Buy this weekend and came damn close to walking out of the store with a PS3 but I thought I'd wait and see what's going on with the PSN outage first. I don't know if I'm comfortable owning one now, I really hope this gets resolved and no one gets affected by this too bad. I remember how much I freaked out when my Gawker comment account got hacked, and the worst that came form that was my friends on FB got some spam message sent to them that night. I can't imagine how nerve racking it is to know that someone MAY have accessed your CC info last week and you're just now being informed.

I'm not in "Thank Jeezus for my 360" mode because for all I know, XBL could be this vulnerable too. If there's any good that comes from this, it's that MS, Sony and (to the extent they'd even be vulnerable to this) Nintendo step up their online security for the future.
254983, yeah, the good news is M$ prolly do a THOROUGH security review
Posted by celery77, Wed Apr-27-11 09:07 AM
look, I don't care about multiplayer outages -- I'll have a chuckle at Sony, but the extent to which people freak out over it is over the top.

but coming out and announcing there was a massive data leak of all the info they stored a week after the fact? that would freak me out, and doesn't instill confidence in the Sony online service (which I already wasn't that confident in anyway due to their host of minor issues they've had so far).

anyway, I don't consider myself a fanboy, but as a person who plays probably ~50% of my games online, I'd just be lying if I didn't say I was very happy with the service Microsoft provides.
254980, Thank you
Posted by Dr Claw, Wed Apr-27-11 08:25 AM
I owned an X360 first
and bought a PS3 only because of GT5 and the fact that I wanted to play certain games online against PS3 owners. So, yeah... this sucks for me, as the reason I bought the console ain't working.

But it ain't like owning a 360 has anything to do with some jabroni deciding to Koch some shit from Sony.

255213, 360's Hulu app is soooooooo wack
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Sun May-01-11 02:35 AM
It takes away the best things about Hulu on PS3. First, there's no auto play so you have to select a new ep of whatever show you're watching every. single. time. That is beyond annoying. You also can't browe while watching a video. Without that it's no diff from Netflix. In fact, it basically is Netflix with commercials on 360.

I need PSN back, ASAP.

on Hulu for 360 than Hulu for PS3. Auto-play and multitasking are the two big things that make the app worthwhile compared to Netflix.

Even my girl saw that shit and was like, "damn, no auto-play?"

For Netflix, 360 is better with the most recent update. Before that, PS3 was, and back when you had to use the disc, 360 was wayyy better.

255000, so the fact XBL users been playing the SAME games online during this
Posted by celery77, Wed Apr-27-11 12:26 PM
is irrelevant?

if I was a Comcast customer and they took down ESPN for a week while DirecTV customers were watching the NBA playoffs on their couch the whole time, HELL YEAH I'd be thinking about canceling my shit and switching to DirecTV.

I mean, you have plenty of dudes in here that own both X360 + PS3 and when multi-platform games drop they have to make the decision which console to cop on. if one of those consoles is online, and the other isn't -- you don't think that's a salient point to consider before making the decision?

I mean, sucks for PSN users and I've had unplayable games on XBL due to server issues, I know it's a bitch and nothing's perfect, but online gaming has become a central component of most gamers' playing time, Sony's gonna have to take their lumps when they fuck up this bad.
255001, There's a nigga out there who has stolen your identity

sucks to be a PSN user right now, whereas millions of people on XBL are still playing CoD uninterrupted, presumably with their personal details uncompromised ---> that's just bad bad bad for Sony's rep, I really think that's just factual, unbiased observation.

what is your point again?
255003, That is my point.

Posted by celery77, Wed Apr-27-11 02:13 PM
and overall PSN has had a whole host of issues that I've seen people report that I've never (or rarely) experienced on XBL.

I'm assuming this added quality of service comes along with the $50/yr annual subscription I pay, and as long as it stays that way, I'm going to stay happy to keep paying that $50/yr (or is it $60 now?). PC security issues seem pretty irrelevant to a tightly controlled, top-down content delivery system unique to the X360 platform that Microsoft has created with XBL.

Hell, one of the OKP's on my list got account jacked recently,

But to have a security breach that you have to take the whole system down for a week plus is just plain shoddy ass security PERIOD. NO EXCUSE. It's inexcusable for a corporation as large (and experienced, lets not forget Everquest) as Sony to leave credit card numbers out there in the dust.

It will serve as a wakeup call to all three that there's more work then putting in microtransactions to nickle and dime us with and charging in credit cards.

I don't know the details, but I've gotten the messages "check out this website and get free points!" I ignore those messages and haven't had any problems, maybe missed out on some free points in the process, too who knows? lol.

I really was debating a PS3 over the summer. in all honesty, this PSN seals the "pass" on that debate. call that fanboyism if you like, whatevs.

Q: Was my personal data encrypted?
A: All of the data was protected, and access was restricted both physically and through the perimeter and security of the network. The entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken. The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack.

from skimming the alleged chat logs of the hackers, it doesn't look like it was too sophisticated.

But what is up with all these little babies in here crying to momma about "mr xbox owner is making fun of meeee!"

Of course we're making fun of you.

And of course we're allowed to make fun of you when terrible shit happens to a system you probably knew was terrible when you bought.

My Xbox RROD'd. Make fun of me. I knew that shit was a realistic possibility when I bought it. Yet I still did.

PSN sucks. You knew that when you bought your PS3. You bought McDonalds when you could have bought some healthy gourmet shit. And now you got diarrhea. You knew PSN was the low-budget knockoff alternative to Live. Yet you still bought it. And now it's biting you in the ass.

So don't cry when we come in here talking about 360. This is how it works. When XBOX fucks up royally, as it has many times in the past (RROD, Live price increase, peripherals), you will absolutely be able to get on our shit about it. But for now, take your lumps like a man. And honestly, good luck with your personal information. Because at the end of the day this feud isn't personal - it's just shit we do to get under each others' skin.

PlayStation Network Breach: Sony Says Credit Card Info Was Encrypted
By Sarah Jacobsson Purewal, PCWorld Apr 28, 2011 5:56 AM

All we've heard so far from the PlayStation Network and Qriocity hacking debacle are bad things -- namely, that personal data, including user names, passwords, and possibly stored credit card information may have been compromised. However, here's something to ease your mind: all stored credit card info was encrypted.

Just one day after Sony revealed that personal user data may have been compromised, the company uploaded a Q&A blog post on its website. Sony's director of communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, wrote that "all of the data was protected" and that "the entire credit card table was encrypted and we have no evidence that credit card data was taken."

Of course, what we can draw from this is not only that stored credit card info is (probably) safe, but that the non-credit card info was not encrypted. And it wasn't, as Seybold writes, "The personal data table, which is a separate data set, was not encrypted, but was, of course, behind a very sophisticated security system that was breached in a malicious attack."

Sony says there is no evidence that the (encrypted) credit card info was compromised, but of course it "cannot rule out the possibility." Sony has assured users that the three-digit security code on the back of their credit cards has not been compromised, as Sony has never requested it from anyone who has joined PSN or Qriocity.

So, that's some good news in all of the bad news, right? Still, it's a good idea to put a fraud alert on your card and watch your account for any suspicious activity (or, if you can afford it, just cancel your card and get a new one).

255068, In that case hopefully the passwords were encrypted too.
Posted by Nopayne, Thu Apr-28-11 11:40 AM
They're not as valuable as CC info but it'd still be an egregious error not to protect them.
255098, they weren't.

255557, i was (sorta) wrong.
Posted by Jesse Badgreen, Mon May-09-11 04:57 PM
they're saying they were hashed. i don't know if they're hashed on the console but i would assume the hashing function should be available to the (hardware) hackers if they are.

it's moot, though, for everyone who doesn't use the same password for PSN and their linked e-mail address if they're forcing everyone to change their passwords when it comes back up.
255069, somewhat of a silver lining.
Posted by BigSlickMick, Thu Apr-28-11 11:43 AM
i'm glad that data was encrypted, but the whole situation still sucks.

some months after the PR stink of this nightmare blows over, Sony is going to starting charging for normal PSN access in the interest of 'improving' the security of the system.

Makes no difference to me anyway because I've pretty much given up gaming about three or so months ago, but I'm upset my one purchase of an online game could possible result in me getting ganked of my ducats.

Redbox will offer $2 per day videogame rentals nationwide in June

By Richard Lawler posted Apr 28th 2011 6:58PM

Kiosk movie rental giant Redbox is finally officially expanding into the games category, announcing today it will offer videogames nationwide starting June 17th. The $2/day game rentals will include selections for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii (two of which even have a working online service right now). This may be old hat to some since it's been in testing at about 5,000 locations since around the same time it kicked off nationwide Blu-ray rentals, but for 21,000+ other locations there's now a whole new reason to stand behind someone that wants to check each and every title available when all you want to do is return a disc. Seriously, express return slots Redbox -- get on it.

>Press Release: Some PlayStation Network and Qriocity Services to be Available This Week

+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media

SOME PLAYSTATION®NETWORK AND QRIOCITY™ SERVICES TO BE AVAILABLE THIS WEEK

Phased Global Rollout of Services to Begin Regionally;
System Security Enhanced to Provide Greater Protection of Personal Information

Tokyo, May 1, 2011 – Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) announced they will shortly begin a phased restoration by region of PlayStation®Network and Qriocity™ services, beginning with gaming, music and video services to be turned on. The company also announced both a series of immediate steps to enhance security across the network and a new customer appreciation program to thank its customers for their patience and loyalty.

Following a criminal cyber-attack on the company’s data-center located in San Diego, California, U.S.A., SNEI quickly turned off the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services, engaged multiple expert information security firms over the course of several days and conducted an extensive audit of the system. Since then, the company has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. SNEI and its third-party experts have conducted extensive tests to verify the security strength of the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. With these measures in place, SCE and SNEI plan to start a phased rollout by region of the services shortly. The initial phase of the rollout will include, but is not limited to, the following:

* Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems
-This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
* Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
* Access to account management and password reset
* Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
* PlayStation®Home
* Friends List
* Chat Functionality

Working closely with several outside security firms, the company has implemented significant security measures to further detect unauthorized activity and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information. The company is also creating the position of Chief Information Security Officer, directly reporting to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation, to add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection and supplement existing information security personnel. The new security measures implemented include, but are not limited to, the following:

* Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks
* Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption
* Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns
* Implementation of additional firewalls

The company also expedited an already planned move of the system to a new data center in a different location that has been under construction and development for several months. In addition, PS3 will have a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation, a critical step to help further protect customer data.

The company is conducting a thorough and on-going investigation and working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute those responsible for the illegal intrusion.

“This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry. These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers’ information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “Our global audience of PlayStation Network and Qriocity consumers was disrupted. We have learned lessons along the way about the valued relationship with our consumers, and to that end, we will be launching a customer appreciation program for registered consumers as a way of expressing our gratitude for their loyalty during this network downtime, as we work even harder to restore and regain their trust in us and our services.”

Complimentary Offering and “Welcome Back” Appreciation Program
While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.

The company will also rollout the PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program, to be offered worldwide, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide our consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.

Central components of the “Welcome Back” program will include:

* Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
* All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
* Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Additional “Welcome Back” entertainment and service offerings will be rolled out over the coming weeks as the company returns the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services to the quality standard users have grown to enjoy and strive to exceed those exceptions.

SNEI will continue to reinforce and verify security for transactions before resuming the PlayStation®Store and other Qriocity operations, scheduled for this month.

SOE has provided us with the following statement, in which it confirms that its user data was stolen as part of the original intrusion -- not a second attack. "While the two systems are distinct and operated separately, given that they are both under the SONY umbrella, there is some degree of architecture that overlaps. The intrusions were similar in nature. This is NOT a second attack; new information has been discovered as part of our ongoing investigation of the external intrusion in April."

Sony’s Response to the U.S. House of Representatives
+ Posted by Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media
Today, the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce held a hearing in Washington, DC on “The Threat of Data Theft to American Consumers.”

Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sony Computer Entertainment America, submitted written answers to questions posed by the subcommittee about the large-scale, criminal cyber-attack we have experienced. We wanted to share those answers with you (click here).

In summary, we told the subcommittee that in dealing with this cyber attack we followed four key principles:

1.Act with care and caution.
2.Provide relevant information to the public when it has been verified.
3.Take responsibility for our obligations to our customers.
4.Work with law enforcement authorities.
We also informed the subcommittee of the following:

•Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.
•We discovered that the intruders had planted a file on one of our Sony Online Entertainment servers named “Anonymous” with the words “We are Legion.”
•By April 25, forensic teams were able to confirm the scope of the personal data they believed had been taken, and could not rule out whether credit card information had been accessed. On April 26, we notified customers of those facts.
•As of today, the major credit card companies have not reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are the direct result of this cyber attack.
•Protecting individuals’ personal data is the highestpriority and ensuring that the Internet can be made secure for commerce is also essential. Worldwide, countries and businesses will have to come together to ensure the safety of commerce over the Internet and find ways to combat cybercrime and cyber terrorism.
•We are taking a number of steps to prevent future breaches, including enhanced levels of data protection and encryption; enhanced ability to detect software intrusions, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns; additional firewalls; establishment of a new data center in an undisclosed location with increased security; and the naming of a new Chief Information Security Officer.
We told the subcommittee about our intent to offer complimentary identity theft protection to U.S. account holders and detailed the “Welcome Back” program that includes free downloads, 30 days of free membership in the
PlayStation Plus premium subscription service; 30 days of free service for Music Unlimited subscribers; and extending PlayStation Plus and Music Unlimited subscriptions for the number of days services were unavailable.

We are working around the clock to have some PlayStation Network services restored and we’ll be providing specific details shortly. We hope this update is helpful to you, and we will continue to keep you posted as we work to restore our network and provide you with both the entertainment and the security you deserve.

255309, Oh oh.

>•By April 25, forensic teams were able to confirm the scope of
>the personal data they believed had been taken, and could not
>rule out whether credit card information had been accessed. On
>April 26, we notified customers of those facts.

this part right here makes it seem like they immediately informed customers of what was going on when in truth they knew of a breach long before. as posted on their own blog they knew of an intrusion on the 19th and, therefore, pulled the plug on the 20th. they did not, however, give any word as to why until the 23rd, but still didn't say anything except that they were working to get it back online. then, 3 days later on the 26th they finally confirmed to customers that their personal information was accessed.

that's a week. a fucking week! their statement above makes it sound like they were on top of it and informed their customers immediately.

sony has always done a hell of a job spinning numbers so again i say FUCK SONY!!

I agree that they should eat some of the shit sandwich but more of the anger should be directed at the peeps who actual broke in and stole valuable information. Not to mention the consumer credit they potentially could have fucked with.
255404, Who would you blame if...

hypothetically speaking...You have all your money at one bank. All of the cash is in the vault. Someone comes in armed and asks for all the money. They give it all to him because they have no security to stop him.

So who do you blame? The person that robbed the bank or the bank that doesn't have any security to stop a robbery from happening?
255406, Exactly. Like there are rumors that their server software was outdated
Posted by BigReg, Fri May-06-11 11:46 AM
I mean, imagine how hard amazon.com, ebay, etc...get hit every day by hackers hoping to get lucky. Obviously if they have to take two weeks to build up their network from scratch again the old version wasn't up to snuff at all.

My point is that most of the posts here lay blame at Sony. I think part of the blame is that we also set up a culture where it is "almost" ok to infringe upon people's rights and in this case finances. In NO way am I absolving Sony of any blame. But groups like Anonymous should not be championed as some sort of Robin Hood when all they do is add to this underground thievery culture. Sony should get their shit together but the government and law enforcement officials need to crack down on these low life individuals that ruin the finances of hardworking honest living individuals.

People leave sensitive information with niggas under the assumption that those same niggas will be able to hold my shit down when hackers try to get to it. You wouldn't leave your money in a bank that has a deadbolt door in between you and your money would you?

Besides, they didn't hack Sony to take your information, them niggas just wanted to snatch information. It's nothing personal on their end.

Smells kinda fishy, but Sony still better be taking things like this seriously. Like, it needs to be "saying bomb on an airplane" level for them after this.

Wasn't there only one attack, or were there actually two?

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-20060227-260.html

A group of hackers says it is planning another wave of cyberattacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hackers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony's Web site. The people involved plan to publicize all or some of the information they are able to copy from Sony's servers, which could include customer names, credit card numbers, and addresses, according to the source. The hackers claim they currently have access to some of Sony's servers.

Should the planned attack succeed, it would be the latest blow in a series of devastating security breaches of Sony's servers over the past month. The failure of Sony's server security has ignited investigations by the FBI, the Department of Justice, Congress, and the New York State Attorney General, a well as data security and privacy authorities in the U.K., Canada, and Taiwan.

Several weeks ago the hacker group known as Anonymous targeted several Sony Web sites, including Sony.com and SonyStyle.com, with a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in retaliation for what its members saw as Sony's unfair legal action against hacker George Hotz. Two weeks ago Sony's PlayStation Network, along with its Qriocity service and Sony Online, were the target of an attack that exposed the personal information of more than 100 million Sony customers. Sony was forced to shut down PSN, Qriocity, and Sony Online, and is currently working to bring them back online after rebuilding the security of its servers.

Sony says it doesn't know who orchestrated what it's calling a "highly sophisticated, planned" attack, but it has dropped hints that the group Anonymous is involved. Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment, told a Congressional subcommittee in a letter yesterday that the intruders on its servers planted a file named "Anonymous" containing the statement "We are Legion," part of the group's tagline.

Anonymous issued a statement yesterday denying it was involved in the PSN breach. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group, our 'leadership' does not condone credit card theft," the statement said.

Now it seems the same group of hackers that was able to infiltrate the PSN servers is planning to hit back against Sony.

Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Let's see...

The only reason I called M$ again to try to get my dead XBox replaced (without having to pay) is this Sony mess. I originally bought a PS3 for God of War 3 and to have a blu-ray player, but I was still buying most of my games for the 360. Then, my 360 died on me and the M$ site said that I had to pay to get another one.

Its sad to think that PSN was down for more than a week before I called M$ and confirmed that they'd replace it for free. Then, I got a label from M$, took almost a week to ship my Xbox off (I was outta town), and I STILL might get another XBox in the mail before PSN is back in action. Its funny stuff.

255560, Looks like Sony's servers WERE actually up to date
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Mon May-09-11 05:14 PM

http://bitmob.com/articles/detective-work-reveals-psn-servers-up-to-date

We've all been hearing over and over again for the last week that Sony was running an outdated version of the Apache web-server software on its webservers. The implication, of course, was that this represents Sony's laissez-faire attitude toward the protection of customer information, making it easy for the hackers to gain entry to the PlayStation Network.

But the funny thing about this kind of "common knowledge" in the age of the Internet is the way rumors have an unfortunate tendancy to be repeated as fact. Just a week ago it was "common knowledge" that Sony stored every PSN password in plain text. It was also "common knowledge" that Sony Online Entertainment hadn't been compromised. Neither of those things proved true.

One member of the Beyond3D forum, deathindustrial, was curious about the outdated server software claim and did a very brief amount of very interesting research into the issue....

(Beyond3D's community has a unique combination of technically knowledgable users with a low rate of console fanboyism, allowing for an honest discussion of things like the PSN data breach without the conversation devolving into another proxy battle in the great fanboy wars.)

As it turns out, it is fairly simple to use Google's webcache to show what version of Apache the PSN servers were using back in March. According to a page request archived by Google on March 23, 2011, at that time Sony was running version 2.2.17 of the software. You can see from Apache's website that 2.2.17 is the latest stable version of the webserver available even today. This is a direct repudiation of the claims being made that Sony's webservers were out of date by as much as five years.

Poster deathindustrial also goes on to point out the folly in using "security expert" Dr. Eugene Spafford's testimony before Congress as a source for the claims that the servers were outdated and that Sony knew about it. In the written statement which accompanied his testimony, Spafford clearly states:

I have no information about what protections they had in place, although some news reports indicate that Sony was running software that was badly out of date and had been warned about that risk.

So he had no first-hand knowledge of the state of Sony's servers or Sony's knowledge about possible exploits, and he was literally repeating claims that he read in the media, which might have stemmed from IRC chat logs that were being passed around back in February. He didn't even do the very basic detective work it would've taken to completely repudiates the claims.

It's sad to say, but many are so eager to see Sony's eye blackened that they are willing to believe any rumor that puts the PlayStation in a negative light. We are in a backwards world where everything Sony says is assumed to be a lie or conspiracy, and anonymous IRC chat logs of dubious origins have miraculously become the most trusted news source in the industry. Here we have a concrete example of why it's important to actually verify your source before repeating something as fact.

255946, BOOOOOO. That's some straight bullshit. Esp the PS3 free games
Posted by Lach, Mon May-16-11 08:01 PM
I want free PS store credit to buy whatever the hell I want. Eff them old ass games that damn near everyone already owns. Give people free PS3 Greatest Hits games? BULLSHIT. Punk ass Sony.
255947, lol. Of course you would have all of them.

255953, lol I only have 1
Posted by The_Red_Ninja_Turtle, Mon May-16-11 09:42 PM
I'm excited.
255951, I don't have a single one of those games. PS3 or PSP.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon May-16-11 08:59 PM

Unfortunately, that's probably because none of them looked the tiniest bit interesting to me when they came out.

The whole thing's probably irrelevant by now anyway, from a marketing standpoint. After all this time, people have made up their minds over whether they're still willing to buy from Sony. They're probably just trying to cover the expected bases now, maybe to limit the risk from class action lawsuits.
255952, how do you not have wipeout hd or sshd?
Posted by Rjcc, Mon May-16-11 09:30 PM
those are two of the best games on the system.

http://card.mygamercard.net/lastgame/rjcc.png

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
255954, I probably will get the Wipeout game.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon May-16-11 09:52 PM

I think I rented one of the very early Wipeout games on PS1. And the fact that I remember renting it probably means I enjoyed it.

Super Stardust HD, I just never heard about until today. Maybe that'll be my #2. Looks really Asteroids-y, though, which isn't really my bag.
255956, you must've not bought at launch
Posted by Rjcc, Mon May-16-11 10:20 PM
it was probably the best game available for a while.

it's dope in hd and 3d.

http://card.mygamercard.net/lastgame/rjcc.png

www.engadgethd.com - the other stuff i'm looking at
255974, SSDHD is the best 3D game I've played on PS3
Posted by Lach, Tue May-17-11 10:14 AM
Shit be exploding into your face. A must buy for any PS3 person.
255955, I only have the two LBP games
Posted by topaz, Mon May-16-11 10:14 PM
So getting Infamous and Wipeout HD for free is great for me. Sony should find another way to compensate the people that have all those games already though (pity they won't). And those four PSP games are kinda shit.
255962, Only PS3 game I don't have is Ratchet and Clank :-/
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Tue May-17-11 02:23 AM
Guess I'll download the game and sell the disc.
255965, same the hell here!
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue May-17-11 08:01 AM
this isn't an apology package to the people that put money in their pockets already it's weak as hell. what good does it to if you can't download but one damn game!?!?!
255966, i'm with lach. this is bullshit.
Posted by Drizzit, Tue May-17-11 08:13 AM
to limit the selection available to the customer who was completely fucked over for the past month is disingenuous. give us a PSN Store credit and KIM. these games are 2-3 years old and most of the users sticking with PS3 are the gamers who have already played/owned/beat these games.

it's a hollow offering to buy media sympathy and deflect attention from a class action lawsuit. it's pathetic.
255986, did they fix the mic prob on dead nation yet?

PSN Password Reset Exploited
Sony's latest security measure may have been circumvented.
UK, May 18, 2011

by Daniel Krupa
IGN UK
Early reports suggest that Sony's request for PlayStation Network users to reset their passwords could have inadvertently exposed the network to a new set of attacks.

The exploit allows hackers to change user passwords via the PSN password reset page, using just two pieces of information – a PSN account email address and a date of birth – both of which could have been obtained in the original breach.

The exploit was initially reported by Nyleveia, but the story has since been confirmed by Eurogamer, who claim to have seen video evidence corroborating Nyleveia's claims.

As a consequence, the PSN sign-in is currently down on a number of Sony's sites.

IGN will keep you updated.

>them damn Raiders use to give me fits in 2k.

Don't remind me..no Wheatley..Doug Jolley couldn't catch for shit. And Porter was just Porter. But somehow my defense (playing with safeties and corners!) kept me in games. Then I lost the Super Bowl to a team that was already better after putting together a crazy 8-game win streak. I was intercepting everybody with them Raiders...damn!

Where have I been? Maaaan...I've been working and relaxing, lurking and laughing. Then the itch gets to me and I write another novel on here about something. If not here, I hit up the lesson with months worth of thoughts. Street Fighter 4 made me start playing online enough to feel like a gamer again. I tried Gears quite a bit too, but I suck at FPS. Gotta actually go through Gears 2 if I get time after the playoffs..GO I dunnos! I can't trust Dallas after 2006, OKC might not have enough even if Dallas lames out, who roots for the Heat (Haslem being healthy is a HUGE deal tho), and I don't trust the non-Rose Bulls to score/make open shots.

I got a 360 early on, but of course they keep dying on me..I only called M$ and got another (for free) after this PSN epic messup. I got a PS3 last year because of God of War III. A few months later, my 360 died and I said eff it. I played God of War I and II on the PS2...which I bought WAY after the fact from one of my boys just to play Fire Pro Wrestling R..Japan version! I did the work to make my PS2 a fliptop and it was on and poppin. Then Fire Pro dropped in the states the next year..wow.

256430, Store will not be coming up today
Posted by Lach, Tue May-24-11 09:48 AM
PlayStation Network is scheduled to undergo maintenance today, from about 8am until approximately 5pm Pacific time. During this time, registration and Account Management will be inaccessible, including the password reset process. While some users may experience difficulty signing in to PSN, the majority of consumers will be able to play online as well as sign in to external sites that require PSN authentication (like this one).

For those asking about the PlayStation Store, we’re still targeting restoration of all services by the end of this month. Contrary to reports, the Store will not be publishing today.

Stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for updates and a notice when maintenance has concluded.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Posted by Drizzit, Tue May-24-11 11:35 AM
cuz i got the software update and had heard there was a new password reset through secure website/email/whatever. when i tried to login after the update, it gave me the same PSN Undergoing Maintenance message.

i didn't game online enough for this to be an inconvenience, but this is getting a bit ridiculous.

Greetings folks. We're LulzSec, and welcome to Sownage. Enclosed you will
find various collections of data stolen from internal Sony networks and websites,
all of which we accessed easily and without the need for outside support or money.

We recently broke into SonyPictures.com and compromised over 1,000,000 users'
personal information, including passwords, email addresses, home addresses,
dates of birth, and all Sony opt-in data associated with their accounts.
Among other things, we also compromised all admin details of Sony Pictures
(including passwords) along with 75,000 "music codes" and 3.5 million "music coupons".

Due to a lack of resource on our part (The Lulz Boat needs additional funding!)
we were unable to fully copy all of this information, however we have samples
for you in our files to prove its authenticity. In theory we could have taken
every last bit of information, but it would have taken several more weeks.

Our goal here is not to come across as master hackers, hence what we're about
to reveal: SonyPictures.com was owned by a very simple SQL injection, one of
the most primitive and common vulnerabilities, as we should all know by now.
From a single injection, we accessed EVERYTHING. Why do you put such faith in
a company that allows itself to become open to these simple attacks?

What's worse is that every bit of data we took wasn't encrypted. Sony stored
over 1,000,000 passwords of its customers in plaintext, which means it's just
a matter of taking it. This is disgraceful and insecure: they were asking for it.

This is an embarrassment to Sony; the SQLi link is provided in our file contents,
and we invite anyone with the balls to check for themselves that what we say
is true. You may even want to plunder those 3.5 million coupons while you can.

Included in our collection are databases from Sony BMG Belgium & Netherlands.
These also contain varied assortments of Sony user and staffer information.

Follow our sexy asses on twitter to hear about our upcoming website. Ciao! ^_^
