251297, Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Gameplay trailer.
Posted by CondoM, Thu Feb-24-11 10:30 AM
Apologies for starting a new thread about it, but I can't be arsed searching for it and this is worthy of its own.

http://au.ign.com/videos/2011/02/24/skyrim-gameplay-trailer

There goes another 200+ hours of my life. Looks amazing.
251340, There's no post up yet, so this is the official one "by default".
Posted by ansomble, Thu Feb-24-11 07:42 PM
Looking like a soul sucking, time draining experience.

And I mean that in the best way I'll ever say that phrase again.

Can't wait!
251359, Is it gonna be a switchable 1st/3rd person, or only 1st person?
Posted by JFrost1117, Fri Feb-25-11 08:01 AM
I kinda enjoy that about Fallout. I like the perspective change, when it's needed.
251361, you can see tin the trailer that it will be
Posted by lexx3001, Fri Feb-25-11 08:30 AM
as was oblivion. also i read in game informer that they improved movement so it doesnt look awkward in 3rd person perspective
251366, Looks really sick
Posted by josephmurf2384, Fri Feb-25-11 10:47 AM
251415, Environments look gorgeous, but I fear for the animations.
Posted by Backbone, Sat Feb-26-11 11:56 AM
They don't show a lot, but a few moves reminded me too much of the old Gamebryo animations. It's one of the biggest immersion killers in Bethesda games, together with the actual bugs.
251416, They have not had a good rap with animations.
Posted by ansomble, Sat Feb-26-11 01:26 PM
We can only be optimistic that they've identified this gaping flaw in this franchise and have assured us it is/is being addressed.
251435, I read the Game Informer review of the demo
Posted by lexx3001, Sun Feb-27-11 10:46 AM
they said that movement has been addressed. they wanted to make them move more realistic. And that the whole back back stab approach isnt going to work anymore now, the fighting is alot more strategic.
263252, Yeah, the sprinting backwards away from a giant bear while
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 03:20 PM
leaping (backwards) over bricks in ruins while pulling & nocking an arrow, then putting it in the bear's forehead (with minimal damage)...that was pretty stupid.

But I think the gameplay will be better balanced to compensate for having to take more licks per encounter, and I'm relieved to hear that archery in particular will be made a lot more realistic.

I'm salivating at the idea of building a skulking, stealthy assassin mage, something along those lines.

263283, I always play through with like 3 or 4 characters
Posted by ansomble, Wed Oct-12-11 06:24 PM
I change a few things but oveall play them in that role... Mage, Assassin, Barbarian.

In Oblivion I had a Acrobatic Khaajit Thief with all Archery and Alchemy, A Female Breton High Mage that literally couldn't take damage because I had 102 DMG REFLECT, A Redguard Blade Knight and a Female Orc Hammer Warrior. (Damn just remembering I played around with a high elf and a wood elf too, God I had too much time on my hands for that game)

This time around I'm already planning to play as maybe a Redguard or Dark Elf Battle Warlock, an Argonian Assassin, and still figuring out any other builds I want to play with, probably screw around with the Nords and Imperials this time around too.

4 years and only one moar month left!
263310, Lol I finished up not too long ago with a High Elf mage who was
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 11:46 PM
permanently invisible thanks to 100%+ Chameleon effects. It was almost too easy. lol

And yeah, I have to see how they spin the bonuses/weaknesses by race this go round. I'm like frothing at the mouth, duke. lol

263363, Yea, me too.
Posted by ansomble, Thu Oct-13-11 12:58 PM
Yo, I used to go into the Imperial City and cast a spell at a guard and just stand in the middle of the city while everyone killed THEMSELVES hitting me. Every so often I'd summon one of them big ass yellow crocodile things to fuck with people every so often.

Let's not even talk about the spells I created.

Gotdamnit, I might take that following weekend off to go into full slob mode.
263734, Man, I created SO MANY custom spells. My last guy was
Posted by Soon, Thu Oct-20-11 11:15 AM
as much an illusionist as anything...and being able to do spells by touch made it all the better.

One joint I called "Suicide Bomb"...I had to boost my attributes AND my magicka to be able to even use it, then would sneak in, and do something like 100 fire damage for 3sec in 50' by touch. Then, follow that with a "Riots" (frenzy up to lvl 25 in 50'), & even a big group would finish each other off. That one was a lot of fun in towns, too...heh

I was late to the customization game, though. A previous Khajiit assassin I'd played would have benefited SO much from some custom items & spells.

263284, So needless to say at this point but RIP to the Gamebryo engine.
Posted by ansomble, Wed Oct-12-11 06:25 PM
Yea buddy.
263285, yeah that engine is so dead. I want Fallout w this engine.
Posted by jetblack, Wed Oct-12-11 06:27 PM
263311, Yo, I'd starve to death.
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 11:50 PM
266789, yeah I'd stop texting these broads back...

I don't text em back anyway lol
263394, I clicked this reply thinking "what sucker is he replying to?"
Posted by Backbone, Thu Oct-13-11 06:21 PM
Fuck old threads man.

With that said: I need to either get rid of my pc before this game gets out, or give up the last two months of this year.
263312, Gah, I just watched the trailer again. ARGH!
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 11:54 PM
263324, Incidentally, I just wrapped up a playthrough of the Witcher 2.
Posted by Soon, Thu Oct-13-11 01:57 AM
It's a lot more..subtle...than the Elder Scrolls joints. Not a bad thing, and the story line is tops. And I have to say the combat was a lot of damn fun.

But compared to Oblivion, it felt very much controlled and corralled. Not as much as Deus Ex HR, but that game made it feel more natural whereas I kept thinking I should have more freedom than I did in the Witcher 2.

This is yet another reason I'm struggling to wait patiently for Skyrim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQtTD5K52xI

My main thing with this is the alley like proximity of the town in this video. I kind of hope Skyrim has towns like this with hidden nooks and corners and dark alleyways for some fun surprises.
263946, i'm really looking forward to this
Posted by bearfield, Mon Oct-24-11 03:53 PM
while i'm a bit disappointed that you can no longer level up by jumping and that they have done away with individual armor pieces, it sounds like they've made a lot of improvements to the base systems and the engine for a more enjoyable and smoother experience. i bet they keep the tradition of keeping all the good quests away from the main story line, as they should. i don't think i ever actually finished oblivion...

hopefully i'll have some time to play it between semesters
263950, Hold on, wait, where'd you hear this...???
Posted by ansomble, Mon Oct-24-11 04:58 PM
>they have done away with individual armor
>pieces

That's probably the first... slightly disappointing news I've heard since the announcement.
263953, i forget. maybe giant bomb?
Posted by bearfield, Mon Oct-24-11 05:05 PM
bethesda is doing a lot of streamlining: simplified armor, only 3 attributes, compared to the ...8? in oblivion + i think they consolidated some magic schools. i'm sure it's for the best but i hope it's not a mass effect 2-style over-simplifying. it's an rpg and i needs my numbers!
263957, Check this out, though:
Posted by Soon, Mon Oct-24-11 05:56 PM
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Hide_Helmet

Look at the matching set bit here: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Heavy_Armor_(Skyrim)

I know that's wikia pages, but I bet someone would've done a lot of editing had the whole piecemeal armoring system been disbanded.

& I understand they're absorbing Mysticism into the other schools. Much as I liked the idea of specializing in one of many types of magic, there wasn't incentive enough to not just learn them all in Oblivion anyway. Long as the spells are there, the schools don't matter much if you practice em.

263958, They clear up the armor question here (swipe):
Posted by ansomble, Mon Oct-24-11 06:26 PM

http://playstationlifestyle.net/2011/07/06/bethesda-releases-tons-of-skyrim-details/

Is armor handled like in Oblivion (with each body part being welded together) or in Morrowind (with each body part separate)? Will you be able to wear both clothes and armor at the same time?

Matt: The armor system is very similar to Oblivion’s. The main difference is that the upper and lower body armors, the cuirass and greaves, have been combined into one piece. This helps create armor styles that have the look we needed for Skyrim. In most of the Nordic designs we created, the upper armor would completely cover the lower armor, making it unnecessary. We get much better visual results combining those pieces, and it renders a lot faster too, so we can put more people on screen, so that was an easy tradeoff for us. We can also make a lot more armors now, so the number and variation types are more than we’ve ever had.

263959, The only things changed in a streamlined sense, that I've heard are:
Posted by ansomble, Mon Oct-24-11 06:32 PM
-The elimination of the Mysticism magic school (not the spells, just the school to drop points in).
-Cuirass and Greaves are now one whole armor piece. Gloves, Boots and Helmet are still interchangable.
-Blade and Blunt are now One Handed and Two Handed skills and supplemented with dual wielding variations.
-The elimination of Acrobatics and Athleticism supplanted with a sprint ability.

So far the changes have been all for the better without destroying the core RPG experience nad in my opinion adding a robust amount of tactical options with the sprint and dual wielding stuff.

Now I'd like to see what they do in regards to rings and necklaces. I hope they are still in. I wonder how many rings or necklaces you can wear and if they'll add bracelets or anything of that sort.

>-Cuirass and Greaves are now one whole armor piece. Gloves,

ah. i misunderstood. good to know that i'll be able to stack enchantments on armor, which is the only reason i would want more armor pieces. theoretically they could just give us one armor piece and a comparable number of slots to put enchanted gems/rocks/whatevers in

>So far the changes have been all for the better without
>destroying the core RPG experience nad in my opinion adding a

i'm pretty skeptical of the tactial possibilities in this game; it is bethesda, after all. something tells me that at some point in the game i'll be able to kill a powerful enemy by standing on a rock, just out of reach, chipping away at its health with spells or a long-range weapon. also, a lot of running backwards...

that said, dual wielding will add a lot to the game. i'm imagining a magic-using character dual wielding an enchanted shield that will freeze/slow/paralyze enemies on block (left hand) and a series of stacking damage-over-time spells (right hand)

>Now I'd like to see what they do in regards to rings and
>necklaces. I hope they are still in. I wonder how many rings
>or necklaces you can wear and if they'll add bracelets or
>anything of that sort.

again, enchantment stacking is the name of the game here. i'm guessing there will be fewer accessories than oblivion in order to keep it simple
264033, Actually... they've spoke on enemies being more defensive.
Posted by ansomble, Tue Oct-25-11 01:28 PM
and not just running up and laying an onslaught down. The spider showesd off in the demo had a projectile web shooting ability and there was confirmation of enemies retreating and setting up traps on the fly. I'm sure level difference might come into play with enemies possibly realizing they are weaker and thus being more defensive.

>that said, dual wielding will add a lot to the game. i'm

Yea, you can actually be a real battle mage now. All shield and touch destruction magic. Dopeness.
263996, never played an oblivion game.
Posted by Drizzit, Tue Oct-25-11 08:57 AM
didn't really get into fallout.

and i already know this game is going to be a problem. reading this thread and running through the various previews ... wow. it's going to be a very lazy winter.
264013, Elder Scrolls is a completely different game than Fallout.
Posted by ansomble, Tue Oct-25-11 10:54 AM
With a completely different engine.
264018, *cocks gun ... points at head*
Posted by Drizzit, Tue Oct-25-11 11:10 AM
didn't bethesda make fallout? wiki is helping with that theory, but i guess they only took over the latest editions?

regardless, the only RPG i destroyed was the first KotOR. everything since then hasn't held my attention, though, i have wanted to look at ME2 & 3.

but skyrim ... eesh. this looks bad.
264026, Fallout and Oblivion had the same engine and the playing
Posted by ansomble, Tue Oct-25-11 12:15 PM
experience is different.

Skyrim has a brand new engine that will seperate it from previous Bethesda releases.

They are similar though, you're right. I'm hoping that this release makes it's seperation from other titles.
264027, They did for Fallout 3 & New Vegas.
Posted by Soon, Tue Oct-25-11 12:20 PM
Not the previous ones, though.

I think there is overlap in the rendering engine between Oblivion & Fallout 3, but aside from a few keystrokes and basic concepts, they really are very different games.

Certain elements of Fallout 3 actually make it into Skyrim, it looks like: the sneak feature looks much more robust, whereas in Oblivion it was hidden vs detected. In Fallout, it was hidden, then caution, then detected, with last known location being written in fairly effectively.

Actually, Fallout 3 is perhaps the most immersive game I've played in the last 10 years or so. Admittedly I'm at best a weekend warrior gamer, but I cover the main bases.

264031, I went through an embarrassing amount of hands on impressions
Posted by ansomble, Tue Oct-25-11 01:16 PM
after Bethesda let media outlets in for the 3 hour preview and came across one gamer site that spoke on the sneaking.

As you know, they've added stealth kill animations, and sneaking attacks still do 2X dmg, but what is cool that they've added on to is the amount of noise you make when sneaking.

Missed arrows hitting walls beside/behind targets no longer go unnoticed and the NPC will act accordingly to realizing someone is shooting arrows at them. The person describing this playthrough made mention of killing a guard that was at a door entrance inside a cave and upon entering the room he was guarding, overhearing the 2 bandits inside:

-"What was that sound? Didn't we put a guard at the door?"
-"Yea... we did."

I thought that was pretty cool.

264136, fallout 3 was the last game i was just straight obsessed with
Posted by pdafunk, Wed Oct-26-11 11:51 AM
that game had me hook, line and sinker. unfortunately, that level of immersion also meant that i probaby was never close to actually finishing the game, but i'm okay with that.
264598, I love fallout out but the Elder Scrolls games oh my...
Posted by crow, Wed Nov-02-11 04:24 AM
whole different feel to the games. Oblivion I picked up recently, I got it when it first came out, and I was still addicted. So many different ways to play and so much to do.

I am pretty scared for Skyrim lol. Getting my magic wielding, bow assassin prepped up in my head.

Pick this up, but seriously, it'll take a ton of time out of your life.
264060, Oh and I've got one gripe that I hope they address:
Posted by ansomble, Tue Oct-25-11 06:13 PM
MORE VARIED VOICE ACTORS.

I've already noticed them advertising the Hollywood actors they have on board for the "main characters" and I have to say I really don't give a flying fuck about star power.

Just hire a retarded amount of VARIED voice actors for everybody else in the world.

I really don't want a repeat of the voice acting in Oblivion, All male and female members of one race shouldn't ALL have the same damn voice. Like really yo. Every Khaajit sounds the same? Every Argonian sounds the same? Every Redguard, Orc, Elf sounds the same?

Fuck big talent just hire a shitload of regular ass voice actors to switch shit up.
264297, Lol I'm playing Oblivion again with an Orcish fighter
Posted by Soon, Fri Oct-28-11 09:29 AM
I forgot how incredibly few actors they had.

Hell, Nords & Orcs have the same damn voice it seems. Wtf?

But they're talking about over 60,000 lines of audio recorded, and "many more voice actors".

Still, that would've been a cool thing to crowdsource, find ppl who wanted to record lines at local studios, & if they were up to snuff, have them play a whole character.

They took out the hand-to-hand combat skill, it looks like. I like the idea of it in principle, but are you really gonna palm-punch a Redguard in plate mail? Neckchop a dragon?

264329, They may have taken out the skill, but you can still fist fight.
Posted by ansomble, Fri Oct-28-11 02:09 PM
The new "brawl" speech option in conversations is telltale.

Have you seen the latest sneak peeks? The shit looks way darker than Oblivion. There was a scene where some NPC executioners decapitated somebody on the gallows. Blood and all.

Feels more like Fallout. Can't wait to see if that's a good thing or not.
264584, My Dunmer or Argonian mage-assassin will be a drunkard, too.
Posted by Soon, Tue Nov-01-11 09:20 PM
And he will brawl at every tavern in Skyrim.

Incidentally, in one of the RipTen interviews, they mentioned 70+ voice actors (vs about 12 in Oblivion). I'm with it.

And yeah, after playing Dragon Age and the Witcher 2, I have to say I'm a fan of the trend towards darker, grittier worlds. The Witcher 2 was just brutal in places. I'm excited as hell to see the shamelessly bright, fantasy-laden Tamriel woven on that loom.

From what I understand, elves are given a hard time of things in general, to say nothing of the two beast races. Kill moves are a nod to the tradition embraced by the two aforementioned games, and I hope there's plenty of fucking blood spray.

264597, I believe they have a lot more
Posted by crow, Wed Nov-02-11 03:06 AM
I read that somewhere a bit ago. Some staggering number compared to Oblivion.
264618, Yea just read they employed some Hollywood VOICE ACTORS not
Posted by ansomble, Wed Nov-02-11 10:45 AM
just celebrity voices.

The count is some staggering 70 voices in comparison to Oblivions dozen or so.

They got Jim Cummings!!!!

Jim Cummings = Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Monterey Jack, Darkwing Duck, Pete from Mickey Mouse, Cat from Cat Dog, etc. etc. etc.

I hope they have Phil Lamarr and Maurice LaMarche too!

I ordered from New-eggs so it will probably be here sometime next week. But I couldn't pass up 12 dollars off for the pre-order.

The world feels much bigger than Oblivion or Morrowind. The levelling system is so much better, and the side quests are more fun and varied than in the past. I haven't encountered any noticeable bugs yet, which is a surprise but there's been a few fairly hefty frame rate drops here and there (ps3 version), but they're not too common.

Over all, my Bosmer thief is settling into the world quite nicely. I'm going to work my way into the Dark Brotherhood when I get back from work tonight.

I only got in a couple of hours last night, but they were everything I dreamed of.

The Dunmer deathmage is gonna kick ass. Archery is so much more satisfying, it's ridiculous, and I started with the Sparks spell. I LOVE LIGHTNING.

Busy the rest of the day, but tomorrow morning I'll be up bright and early. lol

265365, I almost forgot how easily hours disappear....
Posted by crow, Fri Nov-11-11 12:12 PM
when playing these games lol.

I haven't accomplished anything! So far the game is fucking amazing. The scope is great, dungeons feel better.

I'm playing a Thief/ Assassin/ Magic user type. Archery is good, but doesn't seem to kill them in one blow like it used to, probably when I get to a higher level with better sneak multipliers it will. One thing I do love though is if I hit a dude while sneaking with an arrow, he doesn't automatically detect me, I can sneak attack him again if I'm crept up in the shadows.

Magic feels strong, its fun as hell shooting jets of flame out of your hand at someone. I use it mostly for if people get to close.

Had one companion get his skull smashed in already. He's dead. Oops.

My obsessive compulsive thief tendencies are back. This game will be the end of my social life.

spent the first day breaking into houses and picking pockets in Riverwood and Whiterun. felt like switching it up and did the two quests at the falls, then did some tanning/smithing, then got randomly attacked by some hired thugs.

there is so much to do that if anything starts feeling like a grind you can always switch it up.
265446, WTF is with the hired thugs?
Posted by crow, Mon Nov-14-11 07:15 AM

265421, My first random dragon didn't give up his soul.
Posted by stravinskian, Sun Nov-13-11 01:01 PM
I assume it was a bug. At first I was afraid it had something to do with my new werewolf status, but I see no mention of that in the forums.

But I killed this frost dragon. I know he was dead because I took his hide and his bones. But he just sat there twitching. Didn't glow or shine or anything. I kept poking at the corpse and yelling at it with my force breath to move it around, to the point where one of the city guards walked up and asked me to stop because I was scaring the townspeople. But it just kept sitting there twitching.

Maybe it's because I hadn't seen the greybeards yet. I have now, so I'm on the hunt.
265436, that sucks
Posted by Nabs, Sun Nov-13-11 09:00 PM

and experience, I guess.

The only word I knew (but still needed a soul to use) was a flame thing, and maybe an ice dragon won't work for that.

Whatever. I'll keep trying.
265449, what companion are you rolling with?
Posted by pdafunk, Mon Nov-14-11 09:12 AM
i've been going with Ungreth the Unbroken (or whatever her name is), mainly because she was free and i didn't feel like dropping 500 gold on a merc in Whiterun.

but then i became Thane of Whiterun and have the option of using my personal housecarl as a companion.

Ungreth seems to be doing alright. i load her up like a mule with all of my loot and she doesn't die too often.
265465, The Unbroken died within minutes. I was like screw it, then.
Posted by Soon, Mon Nov-14-11 12:21 PM
265471, Lydia, my housecarl, died on our first quest together.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon Nov-14-11 12:41 PM

We were clearing the bandits out of a fort and she did some really dumb shit. I don't remember what it was, but I remember not being bothered. I also got tired of her complaints about carrying loot. Sven and Ungreth were happy helping out with the loot.

I was happy with Sven (the minstrel from Riverwood) and Ungreth. Sent them both back home on happy terms. But lately I've just been running around on my own. I got tired of the close quarters fights, and never being completely sure that the guy I'm swinging at is actually someone I want to kill.

My least favorite follower was a guy who was assigned to me. I was clearing out a cave full of vampires for a town on the way to Solitude (I forget it's name -- something with an M). This guy was just following me. I wasn't allowed to give him orders. More annoying, he refused to sneak, which is a problem when you're clearing out a cave.
265497, I had Faendal from Riverwood for about 5 minutes
Posted by zero, Mon Nov-14-11 04:39 PM

Posted by stravinskian, Mon Nov-14-11 06:16 PM

He can teach you archery, and this can be exploited for infinite archery. In principle it could be done with any follower who teaches something (unless Bethesda patches it).

You tell him to follow you. Then you have him teach you archery, for money. But then, since he's following you, you can take the money back from his inventory (it's not considered stealing according to the rules, because he holds your loot). Then repeat ad nauseum.
267055, i lost lydia when i did my first quest for the companions
Posted by Playa_Politician, Mon Dec-19-11 10:44 AM
I went back to the dragonsreach(?) where i got her to try and find her (bitch had a ton of high priced weapons, armor and dragon bones/scales of mine). i couldn't find her anywhere, i was distraught. luckily, and i mean luckily apparently because this is one of the only ways to retrieve her... i had bought a house in whiterun w/all that money i was sitting on (from selling everything i can find) and she was kickin it at my pad waiting for me.

Another thing.... my ocd in this game has me hoarding everything. got a ton of high valued weapons (500+ gold) that i dont want to sell until i can get good value for them. get pissed when i sell a crown for 200 gold only to see the shopkeep turn around and sell it for 1000
265451, how the hell do you buy a house?
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Nov-14-11 09:15 AM

265462, I kinda regret getting a house in Whiterun.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon Nov-14-11 12:07 PM

It's a lot of money (5000, and another thousand or so if you want to make it look like less of a hovel). The bed didn't serve much purpose for me, as I already had a bed with the Companions (if I'm remembering their name right), and even just staying at the inn is more cost-effective the first 500 times you do it.

The one real upside of having a house is the storage chest that I can use for stuff I kinda want to keep, but don't want to weigh me down. Ingots that I don't know how to use yet, weapons that aren't good for me but might be good for followers, that kind of thing.
265468, yeah, houses seem a bit spendy. do you need to sleep?
Posted by pdafunk, Mon Nov-14-11 12:31 PM
maybe to get rid of some conditions or something, but i don't think i've slept in a bed yet. i just load up my companion with miscellaneous goods, but now i'm finding that to be an issue since i want to switch companions.

and is there a reason you can't sell certain items? or is it just stolen items? but i need to pawn a lot of this shit off to make some loot.
265473, Do you still get an XP bonus for sleeping in a bed?
Posted by ansomble, Mon Nov-14-11 12:50 PM

I sleep mainly to pass time. Like if there's something I need to do in daytime or nighttime but I have to kill eight hours or whatever to get to that point. I guess technically you could just "wait," but sleeping seems more fitting.

Also, if I'm doing some long-distance travel, I'll often try to start bright and early in the morning, as I've heard the beasties get tougher at night.

>and is there a reason you can't sell certain items? or is it
>just stolen items? but i need to pawn a lot of this shit off
>to make some loot.

Sometimes people just aren't interested in certain merchandise. Like if you go to a potion shop, they often won't buy your weapons because it's just not what they sell. Staves and other magic things you often have to take to the town mage to sell.

Stolen items I don't know, as I haven't really been stealing in this game. I seem to remember though that in Oblivion you had to either let some time pass, or go through some sort of laundering process, before regular shops would buy stolen goods. I could be wrong though -- it's been a long time.
265541, The way the rewards for tasks have been scaling up, I don't
Posted by Soon, Tue Nov-15-11 11:05 AM
mind the $ that went into it. 24/7 storage & access to growing lab of alchemy ingredients is a nice thing to have, and I go to Whiterun a lot anyway since the smithy is right by the door.

Sidenote, I'm a little sad the dragon bones, etc don't have any alchemical properties.

265544, Yeah, by now I'm getting 400 gold for taking things across town.
Posted by stravinskian, Tue Nov-15-11 12:14 PM

And then I get 100 for clearing the bandits out of a fort and I get a little annoyed. But yeah, now that I've advanced a little more, money isn't a problem. I even shelled out for the rest of the house improvements.

>Sidenote, I'm a little sad the dragon bones, etc don't have
>any alchemical properties.

Yeah, I've been saving up all my dragon bones and scales (despite the fact that they seem to be worth a lot of money), thinking that I should be able to make something cool with them. But apparently I'll have to master smithing before that becomes the case.
265549, no but you can build armor out of them

265597, I'm putting dragons down left and right, son! my Archery is on smash...
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Wed Nov-16-11 11:06 AM
Just killed like two more dragons in two days. I need to start finding more dragon walls so I can use those absorbed souls for shouts.

but I see I think I'm gonna get my smithing skill up so I can eventually use those dragon-scales for armor and weapons. It's a good way to make dough too.

I'm carrying a pickaxe for good now so when I go into mines, I can get up on some ore.

Plus I just dropped hella loot on a phat Dwarven bow, w/some dwarven arrows that pretty sick.

A sabre cat tried to run up on me, and I put down that fool in one clean shot through it's mouth.

right now I guess I'm shaping up to be an Archer-Mage-Thief with a real respectable one-hand and smithing game.

This game is gonna steal so much of my time.....

I've used Calm a number of times to get behind a tough enemy, then open them up with the 15x damage with dagger perk. Or combine Frostcloak with my Dunmer ancestral power while chopping up these bitches head-on.

Both my alchemy and enchanting are getting kind of slick, too; in fact, I enchanted some Frost damage on my current dagger >: D

Next up, find some more cool enchantments to learn, and put something epic on my Dwarven bow. I have to say, I was worried about arrow availability, but I've never run out or even that low. Maybe if I only used the top-end ones available I would.

265603, What I love about this game is how unique it is according to player...
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Wed Nov-16-11 11:41 AM
Cause you just said some shit that I have yet to find or hear of. Frostcloak and Calm? Yeah, I need to find those spells.

and I think I'm eligible for the x6 one-handed damage for sneak attacks, but I just wanna pour more points into my archery and since last night, smithing.

Right now my plan is to hit up a couple of mines, get up on some ore, refine it, hunt animals, make leather and get my skill up so that I can make better armors and refine my current equipment.

What I love is that you can just make jewelry too. I snatch gems up all the time.

I'm gonna be the Jacob the Jeweler of Skyrim, watch.

Next time you see a Flame Atronach rockin' that ruby goblet or the Daedric jesus piece that says "BigAssFlame" in diamonds, you'll know where he copped it....

Posted by pdafunk, Wed Nov-16-11 12:06 PM
are those all perks through the one-handed tree?

i've been mainly doing thieving and destruction perks. gonna have to step my game up.
265608, I just reached level 16. But it depends on so much more than level...
Posted by WarriorPoet415, Wed Nov-16-11 12:37 PM
...which is what I love about this game. If you poured all your points into one tree, I'm sure you could get that perk much sooner. maybe before level ten.

also, enchantment, ancestral powers, and other artifacts may play into it.

Like right now, I got an enchantment from one of them stones with a circle in it from around the world, and a couple of rings that are making me juggernaut of one-handedness. Plus I just used some ingots and smithing to improve my armor and my blade.

And at the same time, with the stucture of this game, and the amount of choices you can make I'm sure I'm not even as powerful as I could be even with the badassedness of certain aspects of my character.

Fuck you Bethesda for what you are doing to my life.

1st playthrough is a Ranger type Argonian badass I've named "Brainface". Archery, sneak and thief type shit with two daggers to go hammy when the try and jam me ya diiiiig.

I'm eager to just START a second playthrough to play simultaneously because I'm seeing some of the mage enemies doing shit and I'm like "Damn, magic! You scary!"

Word to that Chilltin Cavern or whatever the fuck it was called. Shit was fucking freaky but came up on a dope Fowler bow and Fowler arrows. Very nice.

It took me close to 2 hours to get all the way to Solitude, (I was determined to go there for some reason) stopping and fully exploring every stop I came across on the way there, which included Rorikstead farm, A bandit camp, a shrine, a puzzle in the middle of nowhere, some wolf killings, a valiant endeavor in killing a mammoth that got caught out there with no teammate or giant whipcracker, and the Fowler cave I mentioned before.

Only one dragon killing so far, haven't gone up to see the graybeards yet.

The graphics really look like garbage for me though. I haven't installed it because of some buggy texture loading that has popped up as an issue that Bethesda plans to patch and my HDMI cable is broken so it looks pretty godawful with no HD and the normal bugginess that comes with a Bethesda game. Still enjoying it though my excitement has been tempered just a bit.

Doesn't mean I'll spend any less time draining into it.
265612, it looks incredible to me
Posted by lexx3001, Wed Nov-16-11 01:58 PM
i mean, also gotta keep in mind that the scale of this game will obviously weigh in on the graphics side. My gripe is some physics, but thats old news. Like running up a mountain and you miss a path and end up straight up running sideways on a steep rock. Like wtf.

Posted by lexx3001, Thu Nov-17-11 01:20 PM

265668, regular install. Bethesda and DICE announced that their recent release
Posted by ansomble, Thu Nov-17-11 01:38 PM
will not operate in HD unless it was installed. Devs are starting to lean toward this for the time being, not sure why. Skyrim is the same way.

265647, A Night to Remember...any of y'all do this one yet? **semi-spoiler**
Posted by pdafunk, Thu Nov-17-11 09:31 AM
so i'm in riften and get challenged to a drinking contest. i figured something bad would happen, dude would try to roll me or whatever, and i'd kill him.

little did i expect to wind up across the fucking country in marketh! that city is crazy to navigate at night with its mc escher staircases winding all over the place. i was about to meet with Maven Black Briar, and now i'm questing in the far northwest.

it's all good though, since i went to rid the Forsworn out of a mine and a dragon came down and started flaming them all.

i love this game and it's unexpected twists and turns.
265655, Lol I *juust* finished that one. All I'll say is,
Posted by Soon, Thu Nov-17-11 10:53 AM
it keeps on being unexpected. Yep!

265663, awesome. i got a lil distracted picking up some more Marketh

quests, but i'll make my way to Rorikstad or wherever. but i gotta clear out that mine of the forsworn and find the Sybil for the temple in marketh, or something.
267245, I'm working on this quest now
Posted by Playa_Politician, Thu Dec-22-11 12:18 PM
awesome story line. I like how it sends you clear across the map, otherwise it would've taken a while for me to make it over there.

that town (markem?) is messed up.
265678, Oh yea, spiders are scary as FUCK and I screamed like a bitch
Posted by ansomble, Thu Nov-17-11 04:14 PM
when a frost dragon dropped down on me just outside the East Empire Trading Co. mainly because I was pretty much unprepared to fight a dragon. There were some Horkers that took most of the heat for a bit but I could only get his health down to 1/3 and RAN LIKE A BITCH.
265680, The dragons seem to get easier after a little while.
Posted by stravinskian, Thu Nov-17-11 04:48 PM

Maybe it's just because I'm a nord (so, cold resistant) and I keep running into frost dragons, but so far I've killed seven or eight dragons and never been seriously hurt. At this point I just get them to land, run right up the their faces, and slash (dual-wielding even) until they fall.

Compared to the epic dragon battles in the Dragon Age games, it's almost kind of disappointing. But then again I do still get killed by trolls and wraiths and stuff, so the dragons will probably become a challenge again eventually.
265685, Yea, those dragon fights in DA:Origins were damn insane.
Posted by ansomble, Thu Nov-17-11 05:19 PM
So far for me the dragon fights still seem pretty major. I'm still low level though.
265686, I'm not mad that they're easy enough to stab/shock/etc to
Posted by Soon, Thu Nov-17-11 05:22 PM
death. They're kind of like giant lizards, after all, and it's cool for them to not be too mythical IMO.

But I'd expect their breath to do a lot more damage. To be able to run up to a wounded one while he's belching 2000 yr old fiery gas at me, then jump on his head, that's a little too "gentle."

265691, I feel like a fucking dick for not pre-ordering this.
Posted by JFrost1117, Thu Nov-17-11 06:56 PM
No one has it, and you guys and every podcast are making this shit sound amazing. :(

I wanna dragon shout gotdammit!
265704, Lol funny thing in this game
Posted by crow, Fri Nov-18-11 12:12 AM
I robbed the College of Winterhold blind like I do everywhere I go. I'm a member and all that too.

I walk by this girl and I hear "why do all my supplies keep disappearing!" I laugh.

Then I talk to one of the guys and he asks me if I could help him locate an item he lost, that I stole, and I go oh, this here? and give it back to him. He's so thankful that I "found" it gives me gold lol

I love this game.

Oh, and fuck dragon priests. They are ridiculous to kill.
265705, I'm still expecting one of these city guards to turn to me and say:
Posted by stravinskian, Fri Nov-18-11 12:15 AM

"I pick things up and put them down."
265722, anybody killed a giant yet?
Posted by pdafunk, Fri Nov-18-11 10:14 AM
first one i ran into i was only level 10-11, so not sure if that makes a difference. but he crushed me with one swing of his hammer.
265723, At level 5 I went gung ho into a camp of them.

Posted by stravinskian, Fri Nov-18-11 10:44 AM

I was able to sneak into their camp and loot their chest without them noticing me, though.

On my initial trip to Whiterun I helped the Companions to kill a giant, and that was pretty easy. But I guess he must have been heavily injured by the time I showed up.
265733, Yes. From far, far, far away.

one of the ones where they cant run up on you. just stand from afar, use magic, some shouts and some archery and you're straight. i'm level 16 and they kill me in 2 hits but if you have obstacles you can use it to your advantage.
265822, first time I ran up on one trying to speak to it
Posted by Squad, Mon Nov-21-11 07:19 AM
He just casually turns around and smashed me with his hammer, launching me half way across skyrim in the process.

Anyway, a get a quest from some Jarl to go take down this giant squatting in some property where he doesnt want this guy. It isn't that far way so I head straight for this dude, with the intent to use arrows, magic and shouts to take him down. I get there, start sneaking and volleying arrows his way and eventually he finds me and starts running up on me so I haul ass to get some distance but in the process, pick up another giant on my tail. So I have two giants chasing after me and im losing stamia.

As I'm fleeing, I come across a hot spring with some tents set up and a couple there practicing the Dibella arts in the hot spring. Their is clothes and wine bottles laying around the edge of the hot spring, so I just interrupted their vacation. However, the giants are behind me but they refuse to come across the hot spring. I don't know why but from their I just use magic, arrows and shouts to take them both down from afar. end of story
265730, The Thieves Guild this game might be the THIEVIEST Thieve's Guils
Posted by ansomble, Fri Nov-18-11 11:57 AM
that ever did Thievvvvve.

It's a rather robust amount of larceny you can do. It is almost like a fucking criminal underworld than just a ragtag gang of kleptomaniacs like in Oblivion. You got shakedowns, defrauding businesses, lifting shit off important people in broad day, break-ins, the works. Not to mention the newfound consequences of stealing from people. You really feel liek a criminal when those hired thugs make you look like a bitch in town, I be like "Shhhh, no one is supposed to know! I'm a helping guy in daytime, and an incredulous bitch niga thief at night and YOU'RE RUINING IT BY TRYING TO KILL ME FOR STEALING IN THE MIDDLE OF TOWN."

I can't wait to see what interesting things the other Gulds are doing this go around, this playthrough I'm joining the Thieve's Guild and soon the Dark Brotherhood.

Next playthrough will probably be the College of Winterhold and the next playthrough which will be my gung ho warrior class, The Companions.

I'm up to the part where I've got to get Ulfric and Tullius to have a sit down, and finally decided to join the Stormcloaks. So I went and murked the Ice Wraith for Galmer, then returned to Whiterun. I'm unable to speak to Ulfric or Galmer.

I already spoke to Tullius and he's alright with the sitdown, but I can't progress any further without those morons listening to me. I'm a retard so I have no other previous saves to fall back on.

265840, After 50+ hours in this game... My pros and cons...
Posted by ansomble, Mon Nov-21-11 11:58 AM
CONS:
-The old Dwemer city ruins are the most boring (so far, haven't explored all of them) although they do have one of the most intimidating enemies in the game, the Dwemer Guardian.

-There are ALOOOOT of fetch quests. : (

-The AI is still plenty stupid. Some AI constructs are new and work well; guards sorta recognizing your face if you escape capture for a bounty in a town and return "Hey, I think I know you...", humanoid enemies falling to their knees and retreating, and some of the harder enemy patterns are dope like the Wispmothers deploying shades. Like shooting someone with an arrow from sneak, them getting up and looking around and whatnot and upon staying hidden long enough they go back to 'everything is fine, I guess I'm hearing things' mode. Like what? You just got split with a fucking arrow, come fucking find who SHOT you. At least stay on alert the whole time. Batman AA did great work with enemy reactions to stealth attacks, they freaked out, they tried to stay in corners, it was great. I'd like to have seen people take a defensive position or lose their cool or even collute with one another on what to do. Maybe aggressive animals try to scurry off if they didn't know where the sneak arrow came from, I mean what bear/wolf/rat runs in the direction they get shot to find a hidden attacker? I'd like to see enemies pull out torches to find you in the darkness, mages use spells to find you... there's just so much they could have done if they really tried.

Plus I've watched enemies just stand in firey oil slicks when I've shot lanterns down, no one makes an effort to get out of the raging conflagration they're posted up in.

PROS:

-All the new animations are great especially the sprint animation with two one handed weapons eequipped. The running and sprinting animation with two spells equipped is really wierd though.

-EVERYTHING ELSE.

50+ hours in and I still haven't even VISITED three of the major cities, Falkreath, Dawnstar, and Malacar or whatever it's called near Solitude.

265842, Yeah, the human AI is absolutely the biggest shortcoming
Posted by Soon, Mon Nov-21-11 12:11 PM
in my book, now.

And I can kind of "work around" it to not give it as much of an opportunity to be stupid. Luckily, I can one-shot a lot of things, and the animation of a sneak-shot bandit flopping down dead makes it all better. (Soul Trap on a bow is an incredibly good enchantment btw)

But agreed, it's almost the only real drawback.

265847, It really is. Bethesda is currently in last place when it comes to enemy AI patterns
Posted by ansomble, Mon Nov-21-11 12:58 PM
It's really frustrating to a degree and flagrantly apparent with newer titles and IPs making such astounding advancements in enemy AI like Batman, Assassin's Creed, and even Rage, irony aside.

I could come up with a laundry list of shit that any person with their thumb up their ass could have thrown down at the idea table. Not sure why Bethesda doesn't beta test their AI with people that could add insight to things that work and don't work. Or just make the encounters more SPECIAL you know to spice things up. I've already gotten bored on occasion playing this, in the same way I did with Oblivion no less. Maybe it's me growing up as a gamer, maybe it's my play style, who knows.

-Wolves/Cats/Bears/Skeever AI shouldn't act the same as humanoid AI and with animal instinct should be able to track you down without line of sight. Sneaking on them should be extremely difficult.

-Dragons shouldn't do that melodramatic fly into the sky just to nosedive when their health is low. Better scripting there.

-Bandit AI. Make them pull torches to find you in the darkness of caves/ruins. Have them yell for help or retreat to more people. Take a defensive position trying to stay the direction of a hidden attacker. Have them lose their cool and swing into the darkness once the torch goes out. Have them accuse other bandits in the room (how awesome would it be if the bandit hit with the arrow accused the archer bandit of shooting him and attacks him! ... even more deliberation if the arrow used to attack wasn't the same as the arrows he's using!) Bandits with wolves that sniff you out in caves and ruins. Enemies that relight torch sconces.
-Mage AI. Use lighting spells to light the darkness up. Use life detection spells to find you in a failed kill sneak attack.

And to a more hardcore degree why isn't there a leveling in the cooking ability? There couldn't be something added into Alchemy or something? Alot of the food creations are borderline pointless with only a handful of dishes that actually are worth a fuck of lugging around with you. Why not include a hunger meter that damages stamina when you don't eat for a while?

Why no frost damage or affects when travelling in the cold maybe? Certain armors that prevent that damage. It's a freezing tundra after all and I've got on NOTHING.

Why do farmers not react to you plucking all their crops from their land and walking off with them?

On another PRO tally, I do like the segregation of the land. Khaajits are all nomads and cutthroats, Orcs are NOWHERE or are muscle, Argonians are service workers, Dunmer are looked down upon and are usually slumming, etc. It's kinda awesome.
265849, I could live with ALL THAT f they only fixed movement
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Nov-21-11 01:08 PM
jumping is so over exaggerated. The whole "i cant find te road so ill run on walls until i find it" thing should have died with oblivion/fallout 3. The engine is way too glitchy. I wish it was alot more solid. I wish that if i hit enemies with a sword, limbs/head would actually sever off, like gunshots did in fallout.
265856, I haven't done a ton of weapon combat outside of a bow, but
Posted by ansomble, Mon Nov-21-11 01:47 PM
I could see the ingenuity in some palpable reactions to enemy damage reactions. Bandits with lower rated armor getting arms/legs broken and disabled when struck with higher rated blunt weapons. Limbs severing from higher rated swords.

Maybe even have daggers not even WORK against heavy armor unless it was a sneak attack or only attacks to exposed places in the armor.

Have certain spells that work better against certain armor types. Fire being blocked up steel or iron shields, lighting leather and hide armors on fire for a period of time. Frost slowing all movement on steel and iron. Glass armor negating shock damage.

Like there is still VERY LITTLE tactical options.

I've been one shotting EVERYTHING since level 24 or so.

265931, This game is essentially Oblivion with one great massive facelift.
Posted by ansomble, Tue Nov-22-11 03:18 PM
Problems that were addressed and changed:

-Voice actors
-Character Modeling
-Animations
-Graphics
-Grander environments
-Enemies that don't level with the player

None of the combat issues and AI issues seem to have made any change or improvement. It is that reason I don't want this to get game of the year.

No innovation was made to the gameplay, the issues that plagued the previous title. Combat is still lame duck. Enemy AI is still absolutely abysmal, I mean outright terrible.

I should have played as a different type of character for the first playthrough, because a sneaking thief/rogue type character is god awful boring once you hit the higher levels. I started a battlemage character up last night after just being completely bored with how obscenely rich and overpowered I was with my Lvl 29 Argonian.

5 years and no real changes, I'm a bit disappointed in Bethesda right now. Just a bit.
265962, I disagree with the non-innovation to the gameplay.
Posted by Soon, Wed Nov-23-11 01:22 AM
Enchantment IMO is a valuable gameplay addition. Like...I'm loving the shit out of it, to be honest. It's even balanced well, with my shit getting better than what's available at just the right tipping point.

So is two-handed control, to a subtle but important degree. I never feel disappointed by the logistical choices I have to make in preparing for a fight, magic-vs-weapon-wise.

I agree, the AI was supposed to come a ways but really didn't. Everyone's about as smart as a mudcrab. Also, much as I've benefited from the ease of instant potion effects, I think The Witcher 2 poisoned (no pun intended) my mind. Instant heals are just not realistic. Potions should take time to imbibe as well as take effect.

But...holy shit the whole world is beautiful at the ruins just north of the Mages' College. I'm sure it's because I'm easy, but the actual world created does a lot to ameliorate the play issues for me.

265986, I think it has alot to do with this style of play (sneak/thief) that just
Posted by ansomble, Wed Nov-23-11 11:38 AM
got the short end of the stick. While the AI is just embarrassing at this juncture, I can concede that I haven't fully explored all the different playstyles yet.

I still get a couple of great moments that make take my mind away from the issues like the Clavicus Vile quest I played last night. The reveal moment in that quest was kind of great, lol.
266163, Anyone got any memorable/favorite moments so far in game?
Posted by ansomble, Mon Nov-28-11 11:28 AM
-Blackreach kind of blew my mind.
-Coming across Barbas made me smile.
-The Twilight Sepulcher part where the light burned was pretty dope too.

Also, if you hadn't noticed, there are shouts you will only come across if you join certain factions/guilds which is cool.
266397, Ah, man. There's times where I'm either on foot or horseback out
Posted by Soon, Mon Dec-05-11 01:03 AM
in the wilderness, and I feel myself about to catch a damn shiver..esp. up at the glaciers during a snowstorm. It's just so lonely and cold out there. lol..but the environment is so arresting that just going someplace is memorable.

I'm kinda mixed up after a big event in the series of quests for the Dark Brotherhood. This *just* happened.

And early on, it was kind of crazy taking out a dragon in open land up north near an Imperial camp, back when I was a wimpier character. Tougher, longer fight with a blood dragon. When he finally died, like 20 soldiers all lined up to stare. Shit was pretty dope.

266402, I think one of my favorites happened the other night
Posted by crow, Mon Dec-05-11 02:53 AM
I was in Solitutde and I walked by a guard, minding my own business, and he was like "I better not see you fiddling with any locks or I'll arrest you myself."

I stopped, turned and was like what?!

Shot him square in the chest with an arrow. He went to the ground pleading for mercy. I stood over him and shot him in the back of the head with an arrow. Walked off. No witnesses, no bounty.

lol for some reason I loved it.

Posted by Soon, Mon Dec-05-11 01:25 AM
Kitted out with weapons/armor sets I enchanted myself (mostly...I have Mehrunes' Razor in rotation) and a full range of magicka recharge-rate increasing gear, I can steal souls at a slit of the throat OR at long range, or do shock/magicka damage, or absorb health, etc. with a set of assassins' daggers. Along with Calm, I can hit it from the back *pause* on wild animals *PAUSE* in broad daylight.

Or pick off one or two from a distance, walk in cloaked in magic armor and death, deal some melee damage, then back up and start zapping hoes Raiden-style.

To recap: I'm pretty fucking bad-ass.

266403, i barely use enchantments
Posted by lexx3001, Mon Dec-05-11 09:37 AM
I hate that they wear off and you have to replenish. Maybe Im wrong because thats what i assume but i tend to go for pure armor/weapons and give enchanted armor / weapons to my companion. Am I wrong or misunderstanding this thing? Also, you stop getting perks after level 50, correct?
266437, I just recently got up on enchantments.
Posted by stravinskian, Mon Dec-05-11 04:23 PM
Now I'm a true believer, particularly on weapons. I didn't get very far into Oblivion before getting distracted, so most of this was new to me.

My trusty Ebony Sword (my main weapon), has a fire enchantment that nicely complements the fire shout. I also use the Dragonbane sword (found in a chest in Sky Haven Temple) for fighting dragons. It has an enchantment that does extra damage on dragons.

Recharging was a hassle until I put the soul bind enchantment (maybe I'm getting the name a bit wrong) on my bow. With that enchantment, if you kill something within a specified period of time, its soul automatically fills one of your empty gems. So every time I snipe something I get a gem refilled, and I always have enough to recharge all my weapons.

I've also enchanted my boots to increase my carrying capacity, gloves to improve one-handed weapon skills, shields with elemental boosts. I also carry around various dragon priest masks, with various powers. It's actually gotten a little silly how often I change around my equipment to match the needs of the moment.
266459, FYI - Armor Enchantments don't wear out.
Posted by Auk_The_Blind, Mon Dec-05-11 07:40 PM
The recent patch broke all the Resistance effects, but otherwise Enchanting can do a lot of ridiculous things. For instance, I have Boots with +35% Sneak and a Ring with the same, which basically makes me invisible once you add in my actual Sneak stat.

Weapon Enchants can be annoying due to the need to recharge, but as stravinskian pointed out there's a perk that refills your weapons when you kill non-humans.
266468, No idea about the perks. That's a bummer if so.
Posted by Soon, Mon Dec-05-11 09:37 PM
But as far as weapons go, you run across dope new ones fairly regularly. All you need is a small stash of loaded soul gems to keep them up, and if they're nice weapons in general, poisons etc serve in good stead even after the charge runs out.

Armors/items never lose charge, however. If I were a tank character, I'd be LOADED and enchanting the shit out of my shit for pure defense/offense. But as a light gear wearer, I benefit a lot from enchantments that help me do distance damage or cause more mage ruckus.

It's stupid as fucking shit I can only wear one ring, though. That is all.

266480, this....

266658, It pretty much kicks ass.
Posted by Soon, Fri Dec-09-11 01:05 PM
My set of mage gear boosts my magicka recharge rate so much, I don't even need to keep upping my total that much. The best stuff is still quest rewards, though..but I can also put certain enchantments on things that up their value a shitload: enchanting skill gains + septims for that ass!

266640, Sheeeiiiiit, enchantments are thee best....

all my quests were feeling a bit bloated, and i felt there were some perks etc. that could have been used a little better. so going from a dark elf mage/thief to an orc berserker should be interesting. it's almost worth it alone due to the graphic kills i've been stacking up with dual weapons. just the sheer strength of this character is fun.

266748, accidental giant run up.
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Mon Dec-12-11 12:45 PM
man i'm just leaving whiterun to walk back to riverwood. i don't like to quicktravel until i get higher up in level.

so i'm like "lemme do some hunting to practice with the bow/arrow"

i see an elk or deer. whatever the fuck it was, fuck that thing.

i draw my bow and arrow. i get in sneak position to get my 2.0x damage.

the arrow cuts through the air in a perfect arc. i was practicing so i'm halfway proficient with my shit.

goddamn elk grazes and lowers it's head.

arrow flies over him.

arrow hits a mammoth.

fuck.

two mammoths.

fuck.

with a giant.

FMredguardL.

so i'm still pissed at missing the elk but i'm kinda amused because the mammoth charges and kills the elk. totally ignoring me a few yards away. then the goddamn giant sees the kill and approaches and i guess i wandered into his line of sight because he immediately went all grunty and charged.

so now i gotta goddamn mammoth and a giant charging. i'm running hard. i'm yelling "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" for like the whole minute i'm running.

the other mammoth. iont know wtf he was.

i start running and i'll be goddamn if a random ass wolf comes out of nowhere, stopping my perfect sprint.

"bonk" the scout.

a nigga got homerunned in the back of the face. i fly about a good 50 feet.

266755, Know who's been fucking me up? Bears.
Posted by Soon, Mon Dec-12-11 02:37 PM
Bears are the meanest sons of bitches OUT THERE.

A frost troll might be uglier, but a cave bear will charge your ass from a hundred yards after he shrugs off that poisoned sneak arrow that would've taken down a small whale.

Once I juiced up my Calm spell, they've been easier. But one chucked me like a bowling ball after I assassin-stabbed him in the ass without him dying. It was up north, along the high ridge overlooking the cold-ass water. He spun around and knocked me clean off the cliff, like "FUCK YOU, YOU STARTLED ME, DIE."

Fuck those guys.

266759, Being pretty far along in the game now, I'm considering starting a
Posted by Soon, Mon Dec-12-11 03:10 PM
2nd char.

My first guy is like, shall we say, a Ninja Raiden. A Dunmer mage who's nice with a bow and one-handed sword. Lightning specialist, can silent-cast, basically he raises hell. Only thing is, he's spread a little thin on the perks, because there's so many bad-ass cool things I wanna do.

So I'm thinking about running a dual-wielding mace basher. Either a Redguard for a light-armor murderer type, or an Orc for a heavy berserker. And I wanna get it in with either vampirism or lycanthropy, which I've avoided thus far. Maybe two schools of magic (Alteration & maybe Conjuration?), serious enchantment specialization, and it's on.

266778, that's almost exactly what i did
Posted by pdafunk, Tue Dec-13-11 09:31 AM
went from a dunmer swordmage with perks spread all over the place to a dual-wielding orc berserker. mainly been upping one-handed fighting and heavy armor, with a bit of enchanting. been using my bow a lot more as well, but haven't invested any perks in it. i really like the orc's bersker daily power, and use it whenever i'm in the last stage of a dungeon. double power and taking half damage is pretty nice. and as i stated above, a dual-wielding smasher gets cooler finishing scenes than a mage.
266801, I went with the Redguard for this one. Should be interesting.
Posted by Soon, Tue Dec-13-11 12:08 PM
I'm hoping the light armor will help him stay quick on his feet, and yeah...I can't NOT use a bow whenever chances present themselves. That'll soften a target up if not kill them outright, then I can hit the Adrenaline to sprint in and crack some skulls. With Alteration, I can get some armor boost, which I'll need. Or maybe I can bring the Atronach for a really messy melee via Conjuration, then charge in.

Should be interesting seeing how these cats develop on the slightly different paths!

I'd like to see some combat performance comparisons between axes and maces, though. War axes are an interesting thing for me to keep in mind.

266804, massive list of tips and tricks from reddit (swipe link)
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Tue Dec-13-11 12:51 PM
there are more in the post.

http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/mb8la/massive_list_of_all_the_tips_and_tricks/

Lately been seeing many posts asking/listing tips about the game. I decided to create this one so all of you could post them here for other to see. I will update the OP with each tip posted so people don't have to scroll through the whole thing. Hopefully as we get more tips and tricks in here I can put them in different categories for easier viewing
Here to start us off, some of the tips I saw posted.
THE SPRINT BUTTONS ARE: PC=Alt, Xbox=LB, PS3=L2, you can also sprint on a horse
SAVE AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE F5 IS THE QUICK SAVE KEY
You can rebind all of your keys in the control menu
If you give your companion a torch they will use it at night-LINK
If you want to keep sprinting don't let your stamina run out fully as it takes a few seconds to starts regenerating
If you see oil on the ground there is usually a lamp you can knock on the ground to set the oil on fire
You can dismount a horse in the water and then mount it again to have regular speed-LINK
You can equip a pickaxe and "hit" the ore vein to start mining, likewise you can dualweild them to mine faster
Waiting (Press T) will fill up your Magika/Health/Stamina bar instantly
Try reading every book you see, the bigger the value of it, the more likely it has a free skill up or a quest inside waiting for you
To hide your UI while taking screenshots type in tm in console (~), then type it again to bring it back
Sometimes if a dragon is not landing for a long time try moving to more clear surroundings
You can take torches off the wall to make the room more dark if you are trying to sneak
When attacking with bow from far away press the sneak button to do double damage, even if you are not a sneaky character
Most items that you put inside your home will stay there, so you can safely decorate it however you like
Using Unrelenting force will stop any enemy casting/channeling
Every major city stables has a wagon which you can use to fastravel to other cities you've never been to
In most major holds there is a map with little flags on it that you can use to mark new places on your map
You can buy a dog form a breeder outside Markath for a small price
Your horse can climb up mountains that you couldn't on foot.
You can take keys from your companions to have access to their house
If the NPCs are asking you about your health ("feeling sick?" or "You feeling alright?") that means you have a disease, use a shrine to cleanse it, or craft a disease curing potion and drink it
Don't sell all of your magical weapons since you can disenchant them and level up your enchanting skill that way
You can place baskets on peoples head and then steal their stuff without them noticing -LINK
You can hotkey your favorite items by opening the favorite menu (Q), highlighting the item and click 1-8 buttons on your keyboard
Fire does the most raw damage,Frost and Shock do the same amount of damage, but ice drains stamina and slows the enemy, and Lightning drains magicka.
You can revive every living creature except dragons with the Reanimate spells in the Conjuration tree
Making Iron daggers and Leather Bracers is a quick way to level up early smithing, use them for enchanting skill ups or sell them to a vendor for speech skill ups
When you increase your stamina you also increase your maximum carry capacity by 5
By holding the "Use" key you can move items around.
When you trade armor to your companions they automatically equip it if its better then what they currently have.
Resting in a bed will give you rested status, allowing for bonus XP gain, resting in your own bed (inside your house or one you purchased at the inn) will give you a well rested status allowing for even more bonus XP
By wearing Amulet of Mara (which you can buy in Riften for 200g) you have an option to marry people, marriage provides all sorts of benefits for you. For more info on marriage and list of spouses SEE HERE
To see locations of quests on your map select them in your journal and hit M
To discover new dragon shout words talk to the Argenier the Greybeard leader in the High Hrothgar and he will give you a small side quest and direct you to a new world wall one a time.
You can fast travel while over encumbered with a horse
If you are completely outmatched against a mage (as in, an enemy that uses ONLY magic), try to get behind cover. If you can stay behind cover long enough while the enemy is shooting at you, their magicka will eventually drain, and you can then use a weapon/spell that drains magicka to finish them off while they sit there, helpless
If you are a mage or archer who is outmatched by a melee-only enemy, you can use the terrain to your advantage. If you see a cliff, jump on top of it and your enemy usually won't be able to follow you, giving you precious time to deal damage while avoiding the enemy.
If you are playing a mage character, make sure you check out the Mage College in Winterhold. Just be ready for a very challenging quest chain.
If you are playing a stealthy character, ask your nearest innkeeper about rumors..
Best way to skill up Sneak is preforming sneak attacks
Summoned creatures ( through spells or scrolls) are very powerful and can be a great help in some of the tough boss fights, dragon priests come to mind.
Saving enchanted weapons and disenchanting them will let you level enchanting extremely fast and make good profit out of it since enchanted items are worth more
You can hotkey spells and equipment on the Xbox (and probably the PS3, someone will have to check) by favoriting an item/spell, then holding left or right on the d-pad in the favorites menu with the item/spell you want to hotkey selected. After you close the favorites menu, you will then be able to switch to whatever you hotkeyed by hitting left or right
Atronachs are completely immune to spells of their own type, so if you are mainly a fire spell user, the best atronach to use is the fire one, as you can use your spells without needing to worry about damaging your minion.
Your companion can carry an unlimited number and weight of stuff, but only if you tell them to pick them up in command mode.
Guardian Stones! There are 13 of them across Skyrim. You can have 1 active at a time, but you can change them at will.
The Warrior Stone - Combat skills increase 20% faster.
The Thief Stone - Stealth skills increase 20% faster. The Mage Stone - Magic skills improve 20% faster. The Lover Stone - All skills improve 15% faster. The Apprentice Stone - Recover Magicka twice as fast; twice as vulnerable to magic. The Atronach Stone - 50 extra points of Magicka, 50% Absorb spells, -50% Magicka regen. The Lady Stone - Regenerate Health and Stamina 25% Faster. The Lord Stone - 50 points of damage resistance, 25% magic resistance. The Ritual Stone - Raises all the dead around you to fight for you once per day. The Serpent Stone - Paralyze the target for 5 seconds, and do 25 points of damage once per day. The Shadow Stone - Invisibility for 60 seconds once per day. The Steed Stone - Carry weight +100, no movement penalty from armor. The Tower Stone - Unlock any expert level lock (or lower) once per day.
Grelka appears in Riften after joining the thieves guild. She has over 3300 gold and will buy everything you want to sell
instead of stealing things directly and risk getting caught, pick them up and move them to a secluded room. Then steal the item, hidden from sight.
a good way to level up alteration and rake in some gold coin is by buying/mining iron ore and using the transmute spell to silver and then gold, smelting into bars crafting into jewelry and selling them to vendors
If you make a trainer your companion you can train from them and then take all of your gold right back
Shooting a fireball directly at a mage with a active ward will render the fireball harmless, but a fireball to the ground close to the mage ignores the ward and does full damage.
If you are being attacked by the guards you can yield by sheathing your weapon and they will stop attacking and try to arrest you instead
After serving time in jail/paying off the bounty you can go back in side the jail and retrieve your stolen items. They are usually in chests some where, marked as Prisoner Evidence.
READ THIS IF UR PLAYING A MAGE Tons of great stuff on destruction, too long to post them all so just read through this. Thanks evilnight!
If enemy preforms a summon while fighting you killing the summoner 1st will automatically kill off the summoned creature
Swords swing faster then axes and axes swing faster then maces.
Eating an ingredient will only unlock its first effect, to discover more effects you need to start crafting potions
You can pickpocket the gold back after you spent it on training
Giving gold to a beggar will put a blessing on you that increases your speech skill by 10
Map with all skyrim locations
When you break a pick or turn the lock when it's in the wrong position, the pick will "flick" towards the correct position. Paying attention to that should save a lot of picks.
The experience towards speechcraft you gain from trading with merchants is based on the value. However, you only gain experience for that one unit.
Dragon claws, have the code to open doors on the back of the item look at it in your inventory by zooming in.

266809, Finally started my epic quest last week... cant put the game down
Posted by HighVoltage, Tue Dec-13-11 03:27 PM
Not too much has changed since Oblivion, but I cant complain- that game was nearly flawless.

The guilds seem much more fleshed out this time- so far I've dabbled with Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood.

I hate that I cant fast travel unless I've visited the location before. I guess Bethesda wants to make sure you explore and appreciate just how truly massive Skyrim is, but its a little frustrating at times.

I like how you gain experience and level up by performing that action, but dammit you kinda suck at everything for a while.

Oblivion is my favorite game ever, so needless to say im obsessed with Skyrim.... time will tell if it surpasses Oblivion in my book.
266810, check the list i posted above.
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Tue Dec-13-11 04:09 PM
apparently you can fast travel to places you haven't been (but i guess you can see the icon if you read books or learn from questgivers) by hitting up the carriage outside of the main towns and villages.

I specifically bought it and started in March just so I can have it finished by the time it was released.

Well that's happened. I really....REALLY don't need this time sync.

Plus my list of games is growing....I still aint played Red dead or batman 1 or 2.

267158, Soon, I might try an alchemy/enchanting reinforcement loop
Posted by Soon, Tue Dec-20-11 05:41 PM
Make a bunch of alchemy-raising gear, use it to make enchanting potions, use em to make stronger alchemy gear, make better enchanting potions, etc.

Seems like it'd be expensive & really incremental, though, even with relevant perks in both fields. Anyone tried it yet?

267190, I do that.
Posted by ansomble, Wed Dec-21-11 11:46 AM
267243, Along those lines, Sneak seems to be the most "valuable" enchant
Posted by Soon, Thu Dec-22-11 12:03 PM
I've been able to boost the shit out of my enchanting skill by buying Grands from the vendors in Windhelm, putting Sneak on rings/necklaces, then selling em back for almost as much as I spent. It's like unlimited training, for $ that doesn't even matter.

267186, Fuck a frost troll
Posted by Darryl_Licke, Wed Dec-21-11 11:01 AM
kept my ass up to 1am because a) i didn't save the first 3x b) fucker is dumb strong c) I didn't think to get to high ground and just pelt him with arrows and shouts.

But I got my improved force shout and sprint shout. Only level 8. Back and whiterun tryin to stack some chips.

There is so much to do.....I was tempted to not join the companions since for Skyrim I'm really trying to compartmentalize stuff so I still have things to discover on 2nd and 3rd and 4th run throughs.

As usaul....thiefy guy to start. Not in guild yet though.

Posted by DVS, Thu Dec-22-11 02:27 PM
I've been traveling with a 100% High Elf Mage, and while I can do some ranged damage...I spend most of my time hiding around corners, healing...then coming out to spit fire/frost/lightning.

This works w/every beast I've encountered EXCEPT Dragons and....other Mages

I've only killed two dragons...the one from Whiterrun and a Dragon that made the mistake of landing in the courtyard for Winterhold...I just kept ducking behind pillars and hitting him with Firebolts.

I've also missed 3 consecutive days at the gym playing this fucking game.

D
267264, Wanna own dragons? Get the perk that stuns fuckers when
Posted by Soon, Thu Dec-22-11 07:04 PM
you go two-handed with the attack spells.

Zap a hoe with the lightning bolt that way. If you've already perked frost or fire up, cool, it'll work with those too...but dragonbreath is magicka-powered, & lightning drains a bitch of it. They'll go mute for a sec with enough zaps.

267270, Archery is ridiculous

i hear people say she died early on in the game for them, but she's a trooper for me. got stuck between two axes swinging back and forth, i thought she was a goner (was stuck for about 6 minutes while i looted the place) but she survived.

whenever i do Companion mission and it assigns me help she usually goes home and waits for me in her room (i think its her room because she's always in it and the bed says owned, how can anyone own a bed in my house?)
267454, She's your housecarl, which basically means voluntary slave.
Posted by Backbone, Wed Dec-28-11 04:32 AM
That's why she has a spot in your crib. Every city will give you a carl if you complete enough quests for the Jarl, and I think they all sleep somewhere in your house, even if you're not making use of them.

Also, followers can only die by your hand, if they're kneeling and you hit them with an area effect for example. Otherwise they'll simply recuperate after a few moments.
My first Lydia is now sitting (sleeping, really) on a throne somewhere in a dungeon, for eternity. A fitting reward for going down right when I was about to use unrelenting force on the fire mage that she was fighting.

I am straight one shottin these fools. I love that sound it makes too.

AND FROM DISTANCE TOO!!!

Got bandits runnin to the corpse on some "WAT THE FUCK HAPPEND TO *THUNK*"

terrible dual wielding though.
267473, RE: I am nasty with a bow
Posted by b00g13man, Wed Dec-28-11 03:33 PM
You got any "Fortify Archery" enchanted items? I'm at level 86 archery with the Ebony bow, fortified ebony gauntlets +27% bow damage, fortifed falmer helmet +25% bow damage, fortified circlet for +25% bow damage, fortified ring and necklace +21% bow damage a piece, all for a total of 106.

Combine all that with sneak damage x3, and it's basically my go to weapon.
267525, no but now I am titillated
Posted by Darryl_Licke, Thu Dec-29-11 06:40 PM
I was just geeked dropping bandits and falmers with one shot. You talking about dropping giants.
267463, you know that after your followers die, you can visit their graves right?
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Wed Dec-28-11 10:43 AM
they get a tomb in the catacombs of whiterun.

if you visit them, they'll still have the items you gave to them before they perished.

i'm out.

267471, Anyone bother with the assassin's blade perk?
Posted by b00g13man, Wed Dec-28-11 02:58 PM
I've got 100 sneak, the Ebony mail armor to muffle sound and the shrouded gloves from the dark brotherhood, so basically sneak around enemies and execute backstabs for 30x sneak damage (or double up on that with a dual dagger attack).

Shit is ridiculous.
267478, Best perk ever
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Wed Dec-28-11 07:54 PM
At least for this current character/style I play. I have 100 in smithing/alchemy so I have Blade of Woe(Legendary) at 82 damage, multiply that by 30...Shiiiiiit, I'm trying to find a dragon to one shot.
267491, RE: Best perk ever
Posted by b00g13man, Thu Dec-29-11 06:30 AM
>I have Blade of Woe(Legendary) at 82 damage

Damn!!! Looks like I missed a trick by ignoring smithing for enchanting instead. I'll probably look into that on my next playthrough.
267488, I love that perk
Posted by crow, Thu Dec-29-11 05:40 AM
Ever since I got it I have had an obsession with sneaking behind guards and slitting their throats lol
267490, RE: I love that perk
Posted by b00g13man, Thu Dec-29-11 06:27 AM
Lol. Glad to see I'm not the only one. I basically murder as many non essential characters as I can.
267500, I have it, but I need to get my one-handed and smithing up higher
Posted by Jayson Willyams, Thu Dec-29-11 09:34 AM
Because right now all my daggers are in the 9-14 damage range. Nothing worse than sneaking up on some random guard in the dark and going for that assassination, only to realize that 30x shit is still shit, and now I have all of the hold looking for me.
267508, Smithing makes for some amazing improvements.
Posted by Soon, Thu Dec-29-11 10:39 AM
Esp counting in my + 1-handed bonuses on my armor, higher-level smithing adds SO MUCH DAMN DAMAGE. And when I got the smithing magic items perk? I'M DEADLY.

267530, Smithing is way overpowered.
Posted by Backbone, Thu Dec-29-11 11:40 PM
Very easy to level up (as long as you have iron ingots and leather strips) and gives great bonuses to all your gear. As long as you're not playing a magic only character, you shouldn't ignore it. Enchanting is close to overpowered as well. Takes the fun out of finding magical gear too.
267535, yeah. and you get the same amount of smithing skill...
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Fri Dec-30-11 08:08 AM
NO MATTER THE WEAPON.
so you can smith like 50 cheaply made daggers and level up quick.
sell them or enchant them whatever you want.
then go back and do it again.

i'm out.

267646, I'll disagree with taking the fun out of enchanted gear
Posted by Soon, Tue Jan-03-12 04:20 PM
It's true, the average iron waraxe of icicles or whatever gets ho-hum as shit quickly enough, but there's unique magic items that are entirely too bad-ass not to love. I'm best friends with the Krosis dragon priest mask, for example, even though I've out-forged it with single-enchant helmets now. And if you finish the Mage's College quests, well...let's say there's a lot of mage shit that it'd be impossible to enchant by hand.

267649, Yeah, I neglected the Daedric shrine quests before I wrote the above.
Posted by Backbone, Tue Jan-03-12 04:26 PM
And I totally forgot about Wabbajack for some reason.
267518, getting pretty deep in the game now...
Posted by HighVoltage, Thu Dec-29-11 03:57 PM
I've now completed the main quest, the dark brotherhood, the thieves guild and a bunch of random side quests.

I think next I will tackle The Companions.
267561, WHOA! Ghost smooth took my head off

267564, I finally dabbled with smithing and it worked out quite well
Posted by b00g13man, Sat Dec-31-11 03:17 PM
Got to level 100 and took the Daedric smithing perk. Got the legendary daedric bow with 377 damage after equipping a couple of armor pieces with fortify archery enchantments.

Also got to level 100 on destruction, and with all the armor pieces I've got enchanted with fortify desctruction, every desctruction spell including the master ones costs 0 magic points.

That's just crazy.
267639, nigga, once i get some ebony arrows it's on!
Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Jan-03-12 02:10 PM
i've done less than a dozen quest missions (i've only completed one main quest), but like 60 side objectives.

i'm already sniping fools like it's nothing. i'm a level 80 archer, about to max them perks out. my sneak and light armor are high too, taking full advantage of that thief blessing.

i don't know why anyone would want to be anything but an archer. i think the melee is awkward anyway. i'm a redguard, so i carry a scimitar just in case niggas run up, but nobody ever does.
267641, I bought my house from selling an ebony bow & arrows.

No dual wielding, less related perks, no shield, etc.

But still fun to run up to some asshole and squish them with a sledgehammer.
267648, Yeah, it's sort of weak.
Posted by Soon, Tue Jan-03-12 04:23 PM
It's like swinging shit in Oblivion, basically. Can't even target body parts in VATS...and in New Vegas especially, they overbalanced hand-to-hand to the point that it does a shitload more damage than melee weps.

She literally can't do any damage to me. I lose exactly 1 health point, then it never goes any lower.

I left it alone for about an hour Sunday while the game was on to see if she'd ever hurt me. Nope. But I gained like five Light Armor skill points. lol

267651, is glass the highest light armor?
Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Jan-03-12 04:37 PM
i got glass on my chest, and scaled on my arms and legs. still got an elven helmet, though.
267653, Dragonscale is the "highest" light armor.

Posted by IkeMoses, Tue Jan-03-12 06:42 PM
i stored a set of 3 at my home in Whiterun, figuring they'd be needed for something eventually, but i've sold off a grip of them (since i've bodied a dozen dragons).

let me guess, dragon bone is for heavy armor?
267661, Yep, you'll want to start keeping a few of them around
Posted by Innocent Criminal, Tue Jan-03-12 10:17 PM

I'm saying this having done a thief before and doing a theif again.

Are their twists? yes.

Do we have different shit like having to go fight an Ice Wraith to join the Storm cloaks? yes.

But lore wise....shit the same.

Posted by HighVoltage, Thu Jan-12-12 01:57 AM
Im trying to imagine how long it took Bethesda to write all the stories, dialog, design work, etc. it's stunning.

And it's not like the quality drops off on a side quest from one of the more prominent missions.

I just joined the Stormcloaks and am excited to see how the battle with the Imperials plays out
267899, Preach. I'm thisclose* to finishing the Thieve's Guild questlines
Posted by Jayson Willyams, Thu Jan-12-12 12:16 PM
I WANT to get in with that Dark Brotherhood, but I can't imagine duplicating the amount of time and work it took to get where I am. That shit was like its own game unto itself. Probably going to save Dark Brotherhood for another playthrough.

...then again, those double-damage-with-one-handed-weapons gloves would go reeeeal nice with my sneaky-ass, throat-slitting ninja character. My next character is probably going to be some hulking, 7-foot-tall female Khajiit who specializes in two-handed-weapons, drinking mead, and casting illusion spells. Because fuck it.

* SMALL Thieve's Guild SPOILER

I'm actually probably never going to finish this questline, because doing so would require giving up my Skeleton Key, the unbreakable lockpick that makes lockpicking hilariously simple.

you have to do an INSANE amount of side missions for Delvin and Vex until you get those "special missions" to eventually become Guildmaster.

Posted by Jayson Willyams, Thu Jan-12-12 01:24 PM
I finished one of the "special" jobs from Delvin, but I'm still slogging through Vex's. I just checked, and apparently you have to finish 5 smaller jobs in each of the 4 major cities to get that city's "special" job, and then you have to finish those 4 jobs to become Guildmaster. That's a lot of sidequests, dammit. (You're right though, I'm flush with cash right now)

i am a dark elf, i wear my arch-mage robes. just got to be a level 30. I accidentally beat the main quest as a 28... im basically a sneaker, started archery when i was about a 20 and now just do that all the time. i am DEEP into alchemy, enchanting... i need to start getting into alteration and illusion, the only magic i do is basically destruction, and restoration obviously. conjuration a lot, but dont really need it as much now that i have firebolt. man... with 2/2 augmented flames, stagger, and all my magic? people cant even get near me because ill eventually just absolutely destroy them.

this game is incredible. kind of at a cross roads now, not sure what path to take. i can go on the side quest missions to find all the shouts, but after doing all of the college of winterhold missions idk what to do. become the Thane of all the cities? dont want to join Thieves Guild yet bc I like the respect i get from the towns being the Arch Mage baller I am. love this game.

Not much for enchanting beyond using soul gems. And I have a host of those cause I two hand fight with a soul dagger and something else. use one hand for a bit, double hit when life is low, kill him.

I need to find a way to enchant armor so I can put Invisibility on it. That way I can go around a pickpocket to hearts content.

Posted by Backbone, Sun Jan-22-12 06:24 AM
(obviously you should do what you want, don't take this personal)

Why would you choose to break immersion by doing something that's only possible because the game developers are afraid to have players break story progression?
I think they should've just made all NPC's mortal and give a very clear heads up when a story-critical one gets killed so you can opt to reload a save if you fuck up. This is just lazy game design and people are exploiting it because they're more concerned with getting their perks to 100 than playing an RPG as an.. well.. RPG. Same with the lame iron dagger smithing and enchantment/alchemy loops.

Just my two cents, I'm not really mad at you playing the game how you want it obviously.

I'll see if he'll let me sneak the .apk out for a few folks, but I know he's been working his ass off on it and is gonna probably keep expanding it.

268090, So 100 sneak kinda breaks the melee combat.
Posted by stravinskian, Tue Jan-17-12 08:42 PM

So I'm on kind of a sneak-rogue character at this point. Spent an hour or two yesterday beating the shit out of the Greybeards with a pickaxe to get my sneak up to 100. In the process, I took the 100 sneak perk, which makes enemies lose you if you crouch during battle.

In close quarters there normally isn't much point to this, as they generally seem to immediately find me again. However, I've also got the Assassin's Blade perk (15x damage with daggers when hidden). Ordinarily the idea of this is to run up to the baddies and off them before they've seen you. But I just realized that with the other perk, you get this monster melee combo. I just do my melee fighting with a dagger. Even if they see me, I just crouch down to disappear for a split second, stab em while they're looking for me, and it normally goes directly to a cutscene where I'm slitting their throat.

Sidenote: when I was beating up on the Greybeards, they weren't quite as invincible as they were reputed to be. I started out using a dagger, because it was the only non-enchanted weapon I had handy (I didn't want to discharge anything and have to waste a soul gem). But because I was hiding to work my sneak, and because I already had Assassin's Blade, I nearly killed the main guy (I forget his name) before I noticed the problem and switched to the pickaxe that I just happened to have on hand. I assume it would have made the main quest impossible if I had killed him.

268098, i dont believe you can kill any greybeards in the game
Posted by HighVoltage, Wed Jan-18-12 02:06 AM
when their health gets down to around 10%, they will get down on their knees and wimper around until their health regenerates, but i dont believe you can kill them when they are in that state.

however, they can fight back at you when you are doing that trick to level up if you are not hidden behind them.
268107, Yeah, I did once get Arngeir to turn around and start shouting at me.
Posted by stravinskian, Wed Jan-18-12 01:13 PM

A few seconds later I learned my lesson and reloaded.
268196, How many characters have you created?
Posted by Squad, Sat Jan-21-12 12:16 PM

I've created 2 so far. I got up to lvl 40 with one and am on lvl 28 with another. However, I'm still tweaking stuff around and want to create a new one. Between the two characters I have only finished the College of Winterhold and the Thieves Guild quests, along with a host of other misc quests and side quests. Haven't really sniffed the Main Quest except for the fist few quests or the Civil War stuff. Started the dark brotherhood and companions quests. Although I want to start another character, I'm really dreading going through all the exploring, cave clearing etc. etc I have done so far.

http://usmdetroit.com/
http://www.aptemalclothing.com
268207, I'm 2 in now. My Redguard slayer is almost TOO bad-ass.
Posted by Soon, Sat Jan-21-12 05:25 PM
But I think I'm gonna finish the main quest with him, take a break from the game for a while, then come back later with a heavy warmage-type of char. I haven't tried using a shield even once yet, so I may go shield + destruction + illusion. That'd be pretty dope.

268208, I have to say it's a lot of fun in dual-enchanted Dragonscale armor,
Posted by Soon, Sat Jan-21-12 05:47 PM
with dual-enchanted dual weapons (war axes now), all smithed to Legendary status, with Conjuration spells costing 0 magicka..lol...but it really is starting to get a little *too* easy now.

I'm absolutely destroying everything that comes at me. Most enemies are 1-3 hits. Basically nothing is threatening my life unless I'm just recklessly careless.

I think Smithing is what really put me to nearly deity status. That and being able to conjure atronachs & dremoras in addition to whatever companion I have (I ditched one because they were too powerful too. lol).

Btw, no matter how much of a brute I want to run with, my Lockpick skill will always go high. I'm a treasure addict.

So my 3rd character will be either a true assassin (rather than the mage assassin type my 1st one was) or an armored battlemage specialist.

Much as I love the magic mechanics in this game, I'm leaning towards the latter. I'm thinking heavy armor, block, destruction, illusion, enchanting, & maybe combo lockpick/alchemy. I want to avoid weapons, period, in this config. Should make for an interesting challenge.

268214, I've enchanting my balls off trying to get to dual-enchant
Posted by JFrost1117, Sat Jan-21-12 10:09 PM

268565, Yep! & if you're smithing, you can make all manner of shit, then
Posted by Soon, Thu Feb-02-12 01:53 PM
enchant a hoe, THEN sell it. Good way to make loot and/or offset the cost of buying filled soul gems to speed the enchanting along.

268230, Lockpicking is broken too.
Posted by Backbone, Sun Jan-22-12 06:29 AM
I've never encountered a lock that I couldn't pick because your skill goes up regardless of focussing on it and you pretty much have all the lockpicks you need to simply go trial & error on the expert and master locks. Never took any perks in it either, seems a waste of points.
They should've just left it out the game.
268570, I appreciate them avoiding the Fallout-style ceilings..but they
Posted by Soon, Thu Feb-02-12 02:05 PM
should have made Master locks nearly impossible for low-lvl chars. Like, average of 15-20 lockpicks lost trying to open them up. That'd make 'picks much more of a commodity.

I'm so nice w/it that I usually have like 400 lockpicks by the time my skill level gets anywhere.

268239, have you tried turning up the difficulty?
Posted by DVS, Sun Jan-22-12 02:31 PM
because when I get to that point...I'm going to turn it up to Jedi Master level and see if I can hang.
268571, I'd like to avoid it for consistency's sake, but it may be the move.

If my assassin gets as deadly as the slayer did, I'll try that out with him for sure.

268236, I can craft Daedric, but I'm pissed at myself
Posted by JFrost1117, Sun Jan-22-12 01:18 PM
I've wasted hella Daedra hearts with failed potions.
268273, I regret not sneaking more, now.
Posted by JFrost1117, Tue Jan-24-12 07:55 AM
I got the full-blownsies (aka stage 4 vampirism), and now I get attacked on sight. I need to drain someone's blood in their sleep, but my sneak isn't high enough.
268280, Muffle. learn it. cast it. Use Illusion to compensate as well
Posted by Darryl_Licke, Tue Jan-24-12 11:13 AM
Invisibility potions are your friend sir.

Hmm...I need to go stage 4 vamp. What are the benefits?
268282, Done all that
Posted by JFrost1117, Tue Jan-24-12 12:30 PM
Because I haven't had a reason to put any points into it, I sound like a bull in a china shop when I try to sneak. I only get sneak experience when I'm totally still.

Theres a wikia entry on he stats for lv 4 vampirism.
268291, I thought about becoming a vamp, but it makes zero sense with
Posted by Soon, Tue Jan-24-12 04:43 PM
a character that's not developing sneak skill, and has on heavy armor, and doesn't use conventional weps. lol

But if I can find other ways to get silent, maybe I'll go for it.

268294, Yeah, that's the thing
Posted by JFrost1117, Tue Jan-24-12 05:41 PM
I've been a fuckin tank for 37 levels and didn't cure my vampirism early enough, now I'm clunkin through the night running from angry villagers. Luckily, I haven't had to body all of Whiterun because they don't come in my crib on no foolishness.
268527, I just became a werewolf to cure the vampirism.
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Feb-01-12 08:55 AM
I can turn it on or off at will, and I can still sell/shop in the day without getting attacked by anyone but bandits, Forsworn, and random mages.

My sneak is high as fuck now, though. I put Paralysis on my bow, shot this chick in the back of the head, she stood up and fell face down into her campfire.
268319, I leveled up too fast...now killing is a BITCH
Posted by DVS, Thu Jan-26-12 12:10 PM
i still haven't made it to 100 in Smithing...but my sneak is 100 and my Conjuration is still in the 40s.

But the days when I could One-shot powerful characters?

Gone.

I'm hoping that now that I can craft Daedric weapons I'll get some love...but I have recreated my character like 3 times trying to find balance.

I'm thinking about playing through again and just hoarding all of the soul gems and Iron Ore/Ingots I find to smith and enchant simultaneously after spending all of my early points on Archery/One Hand/Sneak/Light Armor
268320, I one-hit killed a frost dragon the other day.
Posted by stravinskian, Thu Jan-26-12 12:31 PM

Immensely fun, if a bit anticlimactic.

I've got sneak mastered, with all the perks. So when I'm sneaking with a dagger, nobody sees me and I get 15x damage, which is already substantial with my upgraded Ebony dagger. Then the Dark Brotherhood gloves double that, for 30x damage. At one of the dragon lairs (SW of Solitude, if I remember correctly), the dragon was sitting on the ground rather than up on a wall. When I saw that, my Khaajit ears perked up, some poison went on the dagger (just to be absolutely sure), and I sneaked up behind him and sent him to Sithis without ever being noticed.

I wish the game would give us numbers for the damage points from attacks. I'm sure that's the most damaging attack I've ever done, but I'd be interested to know by how much. The first Dragon Age game kept a record of everyone's most damaging hit. But I think it disappeared in the next one. Maybe others aren't as nerdy about this sort of thing as I am.

268569, I put the battlemage on hold. Forward with pure assassin.
Posted by Soon, Thu Feb-02-12 02:02 PM
I went so hard with magic with my first char that I found myself tiring of it kind of quickly..so I'll come back to him later.

So on to a Khajiit super-assassin. I'm finally *really* concentrating on archery, and will use alchemy & enchanting to max my damage-dealing. Certain amount of smithing, but I probably won't try to max it. And Illusion will make sense to really focus on, and just enough one-handed to crank up the stealth attack damage. And, of course, I plan to master sneak.

And I'll finally be able to get my vampire on.

268578, doing this as well
Posted by Squad, Thu Feb-02-12 04:48 PM

except with a dark elf. Starting from scratch as well, my third character. I took the whole month of Jan. off from playing so now its back to it. Focusing on stealth, archery, using daggers only so I will get some one-handed up a little, lock/pick etc etc.

268838, anyone else feeling the redundancy yet?
Posted by kanino, Mon Feb-13-12 05:40 PM
especially after watching that Bethesda gamejam vid they released, it just feels more of the same thing. only thing that can kill me is dragons and hordes of more than 10 enemies.
268841, yeah. it takes a lot of bullshit to take me out.
Posted by jetblack, Mon Feb-13-12 09:17 PM
I have mad thu'ums son.
268843, then again, I haven't not fast traveled in a while.
Posted by kanino, Mon Feb-13-12 10:28 PM
maybe it's just my pacing.
269037, It's not much of an improvement over Oblivion in that regard.
Posted by Backbone, Mon Feb-20-12 04:27 PM
Classic Bethesda: the world stuns you with its beauty, overwhelming scale and freedom of choice at first, then it bores you with them since it all has so little consequence.

It always feels like I fell for a cheap trick, even though the money-per playing-hour ratio is still great.
269038, I tried slow traveling since last week
Posted by kanino, Mon Feb-20-12 04:46 PM
the pacing definitely makes a difference; I don't feel like I'm doing fetch games anymore.

to tell you the truth, I haven't even finished the main plot but this approach has got me back on track again.
268842, how viable is a robes-only 2-handed + alteration altmer?
Posted by bearfield, Mon Feb-13-12 10:27 PM
seems like it could work. oakflesh and its ilk + the perk that doubles the effectiveness of those spells, put a ton of points into block and 2-handed, maybe some light conjuration and/or destruction?

i'm nearly done playing my khajit thief/assassin illusionist so i want the opposite of bows and sneaking but i think a heavy armor orc would be too easy, considering my khajit has a 400+ armor with a 65 light armor rating and only a few perks in that tree (smithing + alchemy + enchantment loop is broken). the aforementioned altmer build seems like it would be fun and challenging
270857, That sounds like a fun setup. Though leveling both Block and
Posted by Soon, Fri Apr-13-12 12:12 PM
2-Handed seems a little unwieldy, no pun intended.

But dual-casting an armor spell, then pulling out a warhammer and wading into the melee sounds like a good time. If you want to add destruction, you could cast a cloak spell on yourself & really screw some draugrs up.

Or just conjure up a 2-handed weapon along with an atronach, and go heavy with alteration/conjuration. Nail enemies from both sides.

273844, it is fun
Posted by bearfield, Tue Jul-17-12 10:47 PM
>Or just conjure up a 2-handed weapon along with an atronach,
>and go heavy with alteration/conjuration. Nail enemies from
>both sides.

i ended up doing this, minus weapon conjuration, as i found it was too slow. better to put a few perks into smithing. also i'm a redguard. named susannah. i'm lvl 30-ish and just went no armor. doing pretty well in melees. i really need a missile attack though. mages are tearing me up.

alteration is 50-ish, as are smithing, enchanting and two-handed. i find i'm not blocking that much, so block is only in the low 30s. i ended up putting a ton of time into "training" (read: exploiting the system) conjuration so i could get the dead thrall spell which apparently is ridiculously powerful if you pick the right enemy to reanimate. haven't actually been able to cast the damn spell yet though. working on getting a "reduced conjuration cost" outfit going

i originally intended on jumping back in skyrim for the companion achievement set and then switching over to dragon's dogma but i just got sucked right back in!
268845, Beat Alduin. I guess I'll put it down til the DLC drops.

Posted by Soon, Wed Apr-11-12 11:16 AM
do some real life stuff, & came back. I also got hooked up with a much, much better video card, so I can finally max out the graphics. VEDDY NICE.

I was slaying with my archer/illusionist assassin so hard, I started missing the battlemage and went back to him. lol

The item equipping dynamics are a real bitch, having to unequip a spell in the right hand by equipping a weapon, then unequipping the weapon, before equipping a new spell so as to keep my shield equipped. Maybe it's just the old, un-patched version I'm using.

But the spell/shield combo, occasionally switching to dual spell, is a damn lot of fun.

270801, Still waiting for DLC.
Posted by JFrost1117, Wed Apr-11-12 12:37 PM
I did about 90% of what I could think I would want to do. I got all the dragon shouts, which was fun. I'm sure I have a lot more levels to go before I max my character, but I beat the game without being maxed out.
270806, i havent... been thinking about going back in
Posted by HecticHavoc, Wed Apr-11-12 03:16 PM
i was a strictly magic-mage (?) that focused on enchanting, alchemy, destruction. i leveled up SO DAMN FAST with allusion because i stumbled upon an ebony armor book (im about a level 50). when i found this book was a 20 alterationist. i would dual that ebony armor and i'd level up EVERY TIME or every other time i used it. great stuff.

i'd like to focus more on illusion and alteration. with destruction i absolutely murk people. i like to Goku them with the double fireball which stuns them, so i basically never get messed with unless i run out of magic. which is rare bc i spent a lot of 'money' on magic.

i beat the main quest fairly early on, now i was just doing daedric missions, i like to find those lost books from the library.

is it bad i still wear the Arch-Mage robes?! i cant find a better outfit. i'd rather have the magic ability it provides than enchant some bullshit armor. i like to be light on my feet.

makes me want to get back in this! ill turn it on tonight.
270808, I gave it up for Lent...haven't plugged back in, yet.

273326, Yeah he's in the original game.
Posted by stravinskian, Sun Jul-01-12 11:55 PM

He goes riding back and forth between a burial ground (presumably his), and some other place I don't remember.

There's nothing else to him, unfortunately. I think the general assumption is that he was part of a quest that ended up not getting finished.

I made up DongGuard, but it's based on a Donald Glover joke, where he said he used to go by Don Glover, but always got called Dong Lover.
273456, I put it down for a while, then picked it back up. I think I'm
Posted by Soon, Fri Jul-06-12 10:44 AM
on my last character with it, though.

This char: back to full mage. Went Breton. Conjuration, alteration, and..restoration. NO destruction or illusion.

My guy is a necromancer, first and foremost. Atronachs come out just for dragons and if there's no corpses nearby. No armor, so the Mage Armor perk is veddy nice. Wards do a lot of good, too, but I usually raise a corpse, armor up, then whip out the bound battleaxe or a warhammer I enchanted up. Or the Ebony Blade.

And I got the Flaming Familiar spell. SO MUCH FUN.

And I'm considering letting him be pro-Empire since I usually fought for the Stormcloaks before.

So with this, I've done some typical builds and some unusual ones, and really tapped into every facet of the gameplay finally.

http://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.8

this is basically a complete texture/effects/sound/interface/lighting/monster + character model overhaul with some gameplay fixes and extra armors/weapons/items/etc. it took a really long time to download and install. it's surprisingly stable considering it added a few dozen extra moving parts to an already buggy game

i'm running an enb on top of it

http://enbdev.com/

i'm getting an unsteady 40-60 fps out in the open world/in cities and a smooth 60 in dungeons + interiors. i still have a few things to tweak in the enb settings. still messing with different lighting mods as well. it's worth noting that i'm running the lower end version of the textures (still better than bethesda's hi-res textures DLC) and i don't have the enb settings maxed out (moderate smaa and ambient occlusion) since my card isn't that good. this is really making me want to invest in a new one though. i want those 4096x4096 rock textures!

still, i think this game looks fantastic now. definitely worth the work. here are some screens:
