@ 350 replies, I think it's time to start anew.

are y'all still playing?
I've been "lurking"; my time's been snatched by various forces out there, but I'll be around toward week's end.

Look for me on PSN and 360 (see: Gamertag post).

while I don't generally pay attention to tiers/character ranking, I had to see what was with these claims that my chosen main, Dan, is no longer the worst of the bunch... and I was shocked to see who was at the top:

JB's gal (Chun), Spank (Honda), N!!! (Dictator), and GUILE.

Guile?! GUILE?!

the same Guile that was GUILED in the previous installment?

were the nerfs to Sagat, Zangief, Ryu, et al were that severe? Cammy was buffed so much that she leap frogged all the way in that group?

well, at least it wasn't Fat Boy, or Pinwheel Puff. the ticky-tack games best popularized by Yun/Yang in original SFIII were (and still) are annoying as shit.

the cool thing is that the current ranking really hasn't affected the character selections of the hangers on. I still see cats sticking with the FFDP (Spanish Claw Man), Fuerte, Gen, Viper, and the like in the tournaments. I think an upswing in Abel players might be coming... because that Ultra II is some BOOOOOOOOLSHEEEET.

Controller check:

what are you players using?
has the rise of players like Zangief (and good ol' cost-prohibition) inspired you all to stay with what's comfortable and familiar?

or are you (like me) falling to the peer pressure and moving out of the comfort zone?

if so, what's yours of choice? are you on a SE, TE, custom? old school via a converter?

sort of related, I've been fooling with the official Dreamcast arcade stick. Got a Namco stick (PS1/PS2) on deck and a Real Arcade Pro (v1, for PS1/2) on the way. After all this SFIV on sticks, I'm trying to see if I can play the older games (3S, SFA, ST) on other consoles with one.
239546, I'm going with a custom via mr. 'zilla
Posted by L_O_Quent, Thu Aug-05-10 08:24 AM
dual mod with the Edmond Honda on it and my name (and possibly children's names) discreetly embedded in it.

I'm been reading more of the in depth info about it but am trying to wait for my sticks because I don't want to be super handicapped by learning inordinate amounts of info on the controller then having to switch to the stick.

Speaking of which does anyone have any suggestions on how/where/what to place the sticks on? I'm 6'4 with big ass hands and don't want to have them cramp up while I'm adjusting to them.

edit: My biggest issue is that I end up playing the same damn characters over and over again so when on I'm not used to shows up I have lots of issues.

where my 360 is, the stick sits right on the desk, which is level with the rest of me.

in another room, I have to be creative. I might have to get an end table for this purpose.

>edit: My biggest issue is that I end up playing the same damn

that's true of me, too.
I often use this to my advantage against others, because no one knows Dan. I ran into a few who did and got GUILED though.

Posted by BigReg, Thu Aug-05-10 09:17 AM
I was kinda stagnant with him and was playing as Rose once Super hit...but while i like her it never really clicked against anyone above scrub level.

So I made a promise to hit online strictly using a new character for all of June(mainly on 360). I decided to go with Ibuki and after I got over the initial sting of getting FUCKED UP, ive gotten pretty decent.

After that month experiment I added Rufus, who I dabbled with when SF4 first hit the scene. What's funny is as powerful as he is, people know his tricks so ive been forced to work for my wins more then with Ibuki since people are so used to the match up.

Anyway, ive been debating on running that 'One char only for a month' experiment again and it's between Honda and Guile/Cody. I haven't mained a fireball character in a minute, so it would be nice to annoy someone from a distance again...of which I figure Guile's .2 second lag between booms would be perfect. Cody, I just find fucking hilarious. Somewhere learning Juri also lurks, but that's a hard char to get a grip on.

Besides that it's blazblue, which I probably would have picked up but that 8 dollar download for a new character is a bitch(and I fear might be the future considering the arcade release of Super will have a least two new chars)

I don't know about that list. Everybody's bad match ups were either Ryu, Sagat, or both. Sagat is a fucking kitten now and Ryu was taken down a notch, so everybody went up in the tier list because of that. I don't know about top tier though.

As far as the nerfs go Sagat got it the worst. Damage reduction, health reduction, standing lk is two hits and only cancellable on the first hit. His safe tiger knee setups don't have as much frame advantage, taking away what little footsie game he had. All he really has is the fireball guantlet. If you get past that you won. Did you see the Evo Stream LI Joe's Sagat vs. FYC Ryder's Abel? The announcers were talking about how LI Joe remained loyal to Sagat in super? Sagat got raped, LI Joe switched to Ryu and got raped again lol.

Ryu can't trade into ultra as easy anymore (l oh fucking l), his DP doesn't have as much invincibility frames so if he does it wrong he'll trade and most likely lose the trade, his super fireball trap is gone but he's still pretty solid.

Gief got a slight damage reduction and his lariat is easier to deal with and his lights into EX Green Hand is a one frame link. That shit doesn't matter to good Giefs though.

Dictator definitely went up because of that ultra 2. Scissor kick pressure is still godlike, he's still hard to zone, he has 3 different escape routes depending on the character so it's hard to OS him, standing Hk and Mk fucking owns, and if you throw out a bad move he can punish the shit from the other end of the screen. Don't know about top but he's up there.

Ryu-Guile was 6-4 Ryu in vanilla because Ryu could win the fireball war. Not anymore. Guile's decreased charge time can keep up with Ryu's fireballs and he builds EX faster than Ryu.

239563, yeah, it just seemed strange.

Ryu still should be somewhere near there because... even with his nerfs, described below... he's still Ryu. LOL @ no more trade SRK Ultra though, that was broken as hell.

Yeah, I saw that. and against Abel (who I'm going to guess was using Ultra 2)...

the new ultras are the equalizers/insta-buffs for a lot of characters I've noticed.

>Gief got a slight damage reduction and his lariat is easier to
>deal with and his lights into EX Green Hand is a one frame
>link. That shit doesn't matter to good Giefs though.

I've noticed the lariat superiority is way down. I don't even really use it too much as anti-air. I've always used that as a means of "getting in" more than anything else.

>Ryu-Guile was 6-4 Ryu in vanilla because Ryu could win the
>fireball war. Not anymore. Guile's decreased charge time can

I didn't even notice that Guile's charge time has gone down. and the funny thing about Guile, when I use him, I rarely use EX for anything but FADC. Some matches I can just have super bar just sitting there.
239655, I've actually never seen Ryder use Ultra 2
Posted by Stringer Bell, Fri Aug-06-10 02:25 PM
He def used Ultra 1 against LI Joe. (I main Abel so I know these things).

Ultra 2 might be a bit annoying but unless Abel catches certain characters in the corner at exactly the right distance, it is rarely unescapeable. Always jump behind Abel if you are close enough to, if too far away, then jump away. The range of the move is such that when you jump backwards from this range you will be out of reach. Also, you can use your armor-breaking move to defeat the hyper armor of the Ultra. OR, anything that hits twice quickly (just like a focus attack). Because of these weaknesses, I use Ultra 1 in probably 70% of matchups, Ultra 2 I only ALWAYS use against Bison, Balrog, Guile, Gief, Chun Li, and another Abel.
241503, RE: I've actually never seen Ryder use Ultra 2
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue Sep-07-10 06:55 AM
Ryder used 2 against Hondas. A blocked headbutt is a guaranteed Ultra 2. I think a reversal timed Ultra 2 will catch an EX headbutt.
241568, You can easily Ultra 1 any headbutt but EX on block.
Posted by Stringer Bell, Tue Sep-07-10 08:53 PM
Not disputing your claim in fact since posting that I've seen some vids where Ryder used Ultra 2 now.

239564, Yup. Guile's got the best fireball in the game.

Honda I don't necessarily agree with being at the top but I understand; while he's got the same basic flaws as before and they made his flying belly flop even a little more vulnerable...but he's the only character not to have had the HP or damage reduction from super.

So while he's still slow and can't get around alot of keep away traps, he's got more HP to wait out mistakes and if he gets in, he can punish you HEAVILY for them. When ive dabbled in Super and made mistakes, ive noticed I don't pay for them as much as I did before and when I can get in and do some damage, im RIGHT back in the running.
239572, am i late or anyone else seen this "Guile goes w/everything" meme?

A Place Where Ms. Pac-Man Still Has a Home

Published: August 4, 2010

WALKING down the southern end of Mott Street — a stretch lined with cheap-toy traps and Chinese restaurants of varying quality — is a fairly unremarkable experience until the sidewalk is suddenly packed with grungy and very loud teenagers and young adults loitering in front of a prominent “No Loitering” sign.

The tourists who make it this far — almost to Chatham Square — will find themselves tiptoeing around the pierced and the eyelinered, around the goths and the hip-hoppers. The biggest of the group turns to his friend and says, “He literally picks up his own life bar and beats you to death with it, son!” Around here, the talk inevitably turns to games.

It is Friday night at the Chinatown Fair video arcade, one of the last of the traditional arcades left in the city. Inside, it’s hot and sweaty and the walls are blood-red. Amid the kids and the trash-talking and chaos, an older Chinese man stands quietly in the corner playing Jr. Pac-Man.

“Friday is the night, it’s packed,” says Travis (“Just Travis”), 30, a dreadlocked paralegal who lives in Harlem and said he has been a regular at Chinatown Fair for seven years.

“It’s an old arcade, more for the hard-core gamers,” he says above the sounds of punches, kicks and car crashes coming from the machines. “Everyone here kind of knows each other. Kids come here from all over the city.” When he was younger and lived in the Bronx with his parents, Travis says, he traveled an hour and half to get to Chinatown Fair “to train.”

In 2005, there were 44 licensed video game arcades in New York, according to the Department of Consumer Affairs; today, 23 survive. With the expansion of interactive online gaming, video game action has largely shifted to the home.

“Arcades are an anachronism now,” says Danny Frank, a spokesman for the Amusement and Music Owners Association of New York. “They exist only in shopping malls.”

Chinatown Fair has become a center for all the outcasts in the city to bond over their shared love for a good 20-punch combo and “old school” games that more popular arcades don’t stock anymore — the classic Street Fighter II from 1991 and King of Fighters 1996, for example, as well as Ms Pac-Man and Time Crisis.

Travis facilitates an introduction to one of the best gamers in the arcade, Yipes, a k a Michael Mendoza, a chubby 23-year-old from Washington Heights with a wispy goatee and a bushy afro-ponytail sticking out under his beanie. “The competition is real good,” says Yipes. “I would say it is the best in Manhattan. And it’s a good hangout. You got games, the people, cheap food around the corner.”

Yipes, who wears baggy jeans and has wooden crosses slung around his neck, points out the various factions that make up the arcade. “You have your DDR clique," he says, referring to the sweat-soaked boys and girls who favor the game Dance Dance Revolution, as well as “your racers, your fighters.” Indeed, most of the teenage males were huddled around a stack of the newer Street Fighter IV machines.

Yipes says he is going to a games tournament in New Jersey the next day and can’t stay long, but a few minutes later, he’s furiously playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2. A sign above the game says: “Play at your own risk — no refunds.”

One person is recording video of the fights in the games to post on YouTube. The players take the games seriously, but the mood is usually more about camaraderie than cut-throat competition. Benjamin Valle, 19, a college student from the Bronx, explains that rather than the usual arcade policy where the winner keeps playing, most players at Chinatown Fair stay on for a maximum of three or four games. “Usually, you run out of money by then anyway,” he adds.

Several employees identified a Pakistani man in his 70s named Samuel as the owner. He says he has been in the business for almost 30 years but then refuses to talk any further, saying he is too busy. Samuel, his thin hair combed over as he leans on a metal cane, is an incongruous sight in a place filled with such youthful energy. At one point a tiny girl rushing toward the dance machines almost knocks him over, without even looking back. Like a tortoise, he centers himself and moves on to his next task.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the arcade stays open until 2 a.m. After midnight, there are more kids with backpacks outside and even more copious smoking.

Sanford Kelly, 22, from the Bronx, looks relaxed in thick glasses and an all-black ensemble. “I’m basically the best guy on the East Coast right now,” he says.

Mr. Kelly is a professional gamer; he lives off the earnings of playing (and winning) in tournaments across the country. He is talking to a white-haired man in a Harlem Globetrotters jersey, Jake Morris. Mr. Morris’s son, another hard-core gamer named Lincoln (a k a Dragon), is around the corner by the Bowery avoiding his dad. Mr. Morris, 57, says he had heard that Mr. Kelly was blacklisted from a recent tournament, apparently because he had won so many times that others felt it wouldn’t be a fair fight.

“I read that on the blogs,” he says, sympathetically.

A few days later, Mr. Kelly was sitting in Chinatown Fair in the late afternoon, taking on all comers. The arcade is much quieter by day, mostly attracting students from the neighborhood. “It’s certainly different from Friday nights,” Mr. Kelly said dismissively, typing into his mobile phone and looking unimpressed. He says he likes to help the younger players improve. “They call me Sanford Sensei,” he says.

Behind Mr. Kelly, a girl asked her friend if he was going to play. He looked hesitant. “I haven’t played in, like, a week and a half.”

Despite its appeal to the hard-core faithful, Chinatown Fair has been feeling the industry’s pain. Travis says that a tournament at the arcade was recently canceled because of low turnout.

“Now, you can play a million people from all around the world,” he says. “For me, it’s not the same as playing face-to-face. The young’uns may not care, but I do.”

Back outside, Yipes is smoking a cigarette in the hot summer air. “Last of a dying breed,” he says, looking up at the faded sign of the arcade. “It’s not sad, it’s a reality.”

I'm working on building my 4th custom now. Calling it 'El Guapo'. This thing has taken longer and cost more than I care to admit, but it will be soooooo worth it. Once it's done I'll post pics

Glad Amon's stick is holding up. That was a quick 1 night job to solder up his TE and dual mod it. L_O's project is getting underway. My builder and I made a switch to a different wood stock than I originally planned, but it will be worth it in the end. My son now wants his own stick. I'll probably get him one of the new acrylic cases that should be out soon (http://www.tek-innovations.com/arthobbies/images/tekcase/displaycases.jpg). If he doesn't like it I'll use it. Actually, I'll use it anyway, so it makes a perfect excuse to have a 3rd joystick in the house!

If I were recommending someone looking for a stick, I'd tell them to get a Madcatz TE 360 version without hesitation, even if they have a PS3. Since you've got genuine Sanwa parts out the box, there's no functional reason to switch those. The only thing you may need to swap out is the restrictor gate, if you don't want the square gate (if you're used to an american arcade, you will know the difference with a circular movement and catching the 4 corners) or the balltop for a battop. The only real reason to swap anything is for aesthetic purposes. There are a slew of colors and art templates to replace them with, and a number of places to get it printed, laminated, etched, etc. I recommend the 360 version because it's much easier to dual mod to work with a PS3 (you can go from PS3 to 360, but it takes more work).

The TE is by far the easiest to customize, but it's not the only choice. Hori has been in the game for a while with their HRAP line. The joystck may be authentic Sanwa (or Seimitsu, depending on the model), but they often use knock off buttons. They are pretty easy to replace though. Some of the newer HRAPS (http://gearmedia.ign.com/gear/image/article/107/1071903/hori-real-arcade-pro-v3-sa-review-20100224035702637_640w.jpg) have authentic Sanwa parts straight out the box, like the TE. The only thing is, the newer Hori sticks are harder to come by. While you can find their older style on Amazon or Ebay, the newer HRAPS may be imports.

The Madcatz SE is interesting because of it's size, which makes it portable. However, they have knockoff buttons AND joystick, so they won't feel as nice and do break. On a budget, it will do the job, and you can modify it as easily as the TE. That said, with the deals you can find now, for the price of a SE, 8 buttons and a Sanwa JLF joystick you could probably buy a TE outright. Also, since the SE slopes at the edges, it makes getting artwork a little harder and a plexiglass top nearly impossible. Still, you could do worse.

One other stick has surfaced that has been popular, but not why you think. The Datel/Joytron/Mayflash (depending on where you go) Arcade Pro (http://ellastoreuk.co.uk/product_images/m/818/medscalePack_Shot__09095_zoom.jpg) is, in a word, a piece of crap. The stick feels horrible and the buttons are mushy unresponsive dreck. BUT, it is the only stick on the market that natively supports PC, PS3 AND Xbox 360 without a converter. Most people (like myself) get the stick, gut the PCB, and put it in a custom stick. Now, with a little work, you can put real arcade parts in one (the case itself really isn't that bad). Then you have a stick close to the size of a SE that you can use on yoru current systems. But you will only find them online, and there is the worry on how rare they will be (how they cracked M$ security chip is a grey area...)

Now, all the above mentioned sticks are Japanese style sticks, with either a Viewlix layout (first 2 buttons slightly lower than the remaining 4/6, which go in a straight line, like so: http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout/shift36_s.png the MadCatz use this) or a Astro City or Blast City layout (Buttons going in a downward arc like so: http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout/sega1_s.png the Hori line uses something similar). If you're used to american parts, with heavy springs in their joysticks and buttons that click when you mash them (think a SFIII or Marvel Vs. Capcom cabinet), you have to go the custom route, as there are no mass market companies that make sticks with those parts. That's a whole other ball of wax that I'll need another post for (assuming anyone even cares)
239650, I didn't know about this:

I was wondering why they kept popping up on SRK and otherwise, since all reviews of the stock Mayflash said it was as you said, "crap".
That PC/PS3/XBOX 360 thing I didn't know about.

I'm a fan of Hori's HRAPs, but the TE is definitely in my estimation, the best designed commercial stick on the market. Worth the Geld, and the Round 1s are "cheap" compared to what they used to go for. The best thing about them is the cord storage area. I would have probably requested a dual mod stick if I had that kind of foresight (I didn't think I'd ever get a PS3).

That Namco stick is FIYA, BTW.

It is a stock Hori stick and buttons, but the buttons are "copies" of the PS-14-G Seimitsu buttons in the HRAP-EX SE, and feel very much the same. the stick, out of Hori's stock feels different than some of their other products I've used (like the Fighting Stick Wii), and also much like the Seimitsu LS-32-01 that I've come to love using over time. Nothing really about it strikes me as "cheap", which is why I'm not surprised it fetches high(er) prices on eBay, as does the Agetec Dreamcast stick. I wouldn't even mod it.

Best thing about it is that because it is a 6-button stick, with default SF layout (Square, Triangle, X, Circle, R1, R2), I can plug it into the Innovation Dreamcast controller converter and use it on the DC without weird button layouts. I mainly used to use it so that I could use Saturn pads on the DC (a big deal because they never had a real good pad solution on the DC; the ASCII Pads wore out real fast).

Same will apply to the HRAP1 once it gets here. So I can technically use the sticks on 4 consoles. PS1, PS2, PS3 (w/Pelican converter), DC (w/Innovation converter). Which will work pretty well for trying to learn how to use one.

@ a tournament I attended, there was a dude who had a custom DC stick w/HAPP parts for playing Marvel. While I am certainly used to playing on square gates more than I used to be, I have to say, a good Happ stick is the kind of firm controller that I like to use.
239824, I didn't know either. But it's true

Yup. It's like the holy grail of dual modding. Instead of 2 PBCs chained together you only need one. The only thing is it doesn't auto detect (must hold turbo, or whatever you link it to, when you plug it into the other system). Otherwise, it's size and dual system capability make it worth its weight in gold. You will see plenty modders use this board since it makes everything from packaging to wiring 5 times easier.

Gotta hand it to MadCatz. They really put together a good produce with their TE, which is why you can find so many custom things for it, from art, to etched plexiglass, to boards made specifically for it's PCB to make dual modding that much easier. If Hori had made their sticks easier to get a hold of, they may be in the S tier spot the TE is in.

Been doing some research I see... The Namco sticks are one of the GOATS, along with the Agetec and the Sega VSHG. The Namco is nice and compact, which people love, and I think the buttons have the same switches as the seimitsu PS14s. I'd like to try one at some point. The VSHG was all love with it's layout, parts (all Sanwa, if I remember) and overall solid feel. People still pay a grip for one of those. Fortunately, there's a guy out there that is making his own take on the VSHG, complete with exotic wooden sides and powdercoated steel shells. I've actually got one, and it's definitely worth the money I spent on it. I'll post up when it's done

Converters are hit and miss, even that Innovation, which is one of the more popular ones. Since I have a BC PS3, I don't have to worry about my stick not working on anything I put in the machine (since it's a sixaxis board hacked in there, I have no problem of it not working). I never owned a DC, so I don't really miss that at all. Can't remember if they have a board that would support DC, but I'll check

I hate the fact that I trained all day to land his one frame f + mk to fp 90% offline only to not land that shit at all online. I can't really get enough good matches to use abel efficiently not to mention I suck with him lol.

Good matches Chief. My Akuma can finally keep up with him now. I need to stop doing dumb shit with Akuma in the Gief matchup but at least I'm not getting demolished anymore.
239657, Couldn't agree more
Posted by Stringer Bell, Fri Aug-06-10 02:35 PM
I main Abel and I can land the 1 frame pretty good in training, but I think I only landed it once in an online match, and I have 3k battle points with abel lol. I use the forward kick way too little in general, partly because I don't own a stick yet and have my medium buttons on the left shoulders and it's hard to execute tough things that require both directionals and L1 and L2, for me anyway.

Practice mode. SF4 and SSF4 are the ONLY games where my ping is +150ms. Usually I'm @ 50-75ms ping.

Offline bad ping practice, 1 bar mode - full bars.
I bet they can do it easily...chuck a few frames every few milliseconds.

OR just have dedicated servers JUST for hosting games. You can do this for shooters but not for fighters?

Seriously? (c) Hakkan.

239747, I think it's coming w/3rd Strike Online.
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Aug-09-10 07:49 AM
They used it in Final Fight Online (which IMO was more of a test run thing).

but if you read anything re: the upcoming 3SOnline cats is like "GGPO! GGPO! GGPO! GGPO!!!" when they're not going "ARCADE PORT ONLY! ARCADE PORT ONLY!"

the netcode on SFIV isn't as bad as most fighters I've seen though; one of the most notorious was Tekken 6 before the patch. TvC (though probably being on the Wii has something to do with it), has some bullshit netcode (and player-match system for that matter). More options to restrict "shit" ping connections should have been up.

239767, i bet they do use it for 3S. folks are gonna be shocked when
Posted by Nabs, Mon Aug-09-10 11:35 AM
they are able to parry online and not have to worry about lag.

it's probably easier for them to use arcade ports with ggpo, so i hope they keep the arcade version of 3S. i hope they don't try to mess with the sprites or hitboxes either. just balance chun and ken a lil bit, and call it a day.
239769, yep, I think that's what they're afraid of
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon Aug-09-10 11:47 AM
>so i hope they keep the arcade version of 3S. i hope they
>don't try to mess with the sprites or hitboxes either. just
>balance chun and ken a lil bit, and call it a day.

the Chun/Ken balance. those two are ridiculous in that game. though, I wouldn't even mess with 'em either. Capcom already messed up my main (Sean) by turning his Shoryuken into that "hang off the rim" BS, so if they mess w/them, they better give him his old SRK back or something.

I've been educated as to what made the Dreamcast port "bad" (because 3S machines were scarce where I was, that was the only way I could play it for the longest time); so an arcade port, perhaps with the removal of unblockables would be on my wish list.

but first and foremost, as online gaming is becoming "the new arcade", they need to have good netcode. that should be priority one for fighting game developers in this generation forward. after the main system/game play is done... netcode comes first, everything else second.

I used to use that on X360, then I got the Hori EX2 Turbo (which IMO is a superior replacement for the stock XBOX controller, and something you can use in between recharges/battery replacement).

Though, while "wireless" on the PS3 is cool I'd rather it be more like the Dual Shock 3s are re: batteries

there is another 6 button controller that Hori makes for the PS3 but they effed up the shoulder buttons

I ate 2 50%ish combos in two rounds. Got straight murked. I'm still getting used to the PS3 controller (yep..playing on a pad). I have to keep telling myself to quit throwing out ultras at the first hint of an opening cuz folks are all about squeezing one out (huh!) of you just to set you up for the damag.

I promise you that I'm sick of playing Ryus. Number one, its like every third fight online. Plus, I've always hated the character (been partial to Ken since SFII), and he always gets pretty appalling priority, lag-friendly speed (great for poke-athon folks to (ab)use)and somewhat easy-to-setup, high damage combos. And he's just a horrible matchup for Gouken in so many ways..especially since I'm not good.

I'm already over 1000 BP on PS3. I WAS at 900-something PP for Gouken. Then, I fought 15 fights last night. 11 of them were Ryus. 11. I'm not making this up. 11 out of 15. And it was the same fight for 10 of those. 20% and greater lag/poke combos, dragon punch cancelling, outlandish blocking out on landing from MISSED dragon punches, lag abuse festival. 2 of them were E Hondas. Good fights, but I lost those too. Honda has some pretty strong priority advantages over Gouken too. If I could reliably Gouken reverse the low kick that folks finish Honda combos with, I'd have a better chance...

I think the other was a Juri.

I went 2 of 15 or something like that and now I'm at 600 or so PP. I wish I could block all C+ and over Ryus till I get better at timing the gouken high reversal DURING LAG, which feels pretty impossible to get on a regular basis. And of course, vs Ryu, every time you don't get that bullshit away from you, it about 30% damage and maybe a stun. The PS3 lag seems pretty bad at times..and this ain't random hating, cuz I took a gang of Ls on XBox too, but not multiple ones where lag and the associated abuse was a strong culprit.

240451, RE: playing late at night?
Posted by jimaveli, Thu Aug-19-10 10:31 AM
Playing late at night = almost no lag. Surprise surprise. I'm firmly at C level and probably will be for-damn-ever. Oh well. The only problem then is finding the medium between TOTAL beginners (ie: people who are even worse than me and/or go cheap as soon as they realize they have no business) and SSF4 devotees who are counting every point, playing with only the highest of tiered folks, and cheesing/laming/doing whatever.

I must say though...my Ryu to other folks ratio is a lot different late at night. Its like 1 to 9 as opposed to 1 to 1.3. Very enjoyable.

- I fought a couple of good kens who didn't SRK their way through life. One was almost turtling..didn't know what to do
- I fought a cool ass Makoto that had me guessing all the way to the third round where I accidentally won with a cheap ultra. Had to friend that dude and say I was sorry.
- I don't like the way folks play Bison. His scissor kick has WTF priority too. At least vs Gouken that is.
- I still hate all Ryus. Whether its the tourney cats with their 34%combos, outrageous priority or the noobs who try to emulate them, I hate that fucker with a passion. HATE.
- A cold Cody is a pain to deal with. And I haven't figured it out yet. At all. I met up with a combo beast Cody. Every time he touched me, it was 3 moves and/or 30% damage. And he was a D, so I had no clue that it was coming.
- I didn't play ONE CHUN-LI.
- I played a B Akuma. Dude was pretty good. Tourney style..kinda cheesy, but not too bad. He was a bit defense deficient so I had a chance when I cornered him. I flubbed a combo (see, I still suck) that would've won the fight for me in round 3 and ended up losing. I cussed 3 times.
- I even took on a Hakan and that shit came down to the wire. He threw a random ultra (like I do) and costed himself the match. Whew!
- I can't beat a Balrog to save my life. Can't guess and counter the way I'd like to.
- I can only beat a weak Guile
- Zangief can eat a dik ith his glow fist into piledriver boolsheet. I beat one/lost to another

Every online dealer was simply slammed when SFIV dropped. 2-4 week delays were not uncommon. The sad thing is, LL is one of the few still in the game. Gamingnow.net shut down about a month ago, and one shop in Chicago that sold parts and did mods for people up and dissapeared, with orders and people's sticks and machines they were working on still in hand.

I usually get my parts within 2 days or so from Chad, since he's in NC, just down the road from DC.

the SE is OK. I have problems getting some motions out, but it can be modded easily.

if you wanna forego the whole modding thing, see if you can find a "Round 1" Tournament Edition stick at reduced price online.
239909, Actually, either the 'Round 1' or the 'TE-S' can be modded
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Aug-11-10 09:27 AM
The guts are pretty much the same, so the same boards used to do a dual mod will work. As mentioned, if you want to go the dual route, it is MUCH easier to start with the 360 version and add a ChImp, DualStrike or something similar to get PS3 compatability.

Either way, you really can't go wrong with a TE. While I've got all customs I've toyed with the idea of getting one myself
239901, E. Honda is officially outfitted out

240249, Interesting SF weekend, I tell you...
Posted by spenzalii, Mon Aug-16-10 08:44 AM
I FINALLY got Chun Li up to C+ status. Been taking a beating online the last couple weeks, so I had to fall back to Honda. While slower, and not the most varied moveset, he can get the job done if my Chun skills aren't up to snuff that day. Somedays you have it, somedays you don't.

Saw some ridic people online this weekend too. Jet and I ran into the nastiest Seth player I've seen online ever. And not scrubby tactics either, straight kick ass. Saw another guy pull off some moves with Honda I didn't think were possible. Had to bounce from that room like 'I'm not worthy!'

Switching back to a pad from a stick is a little harder than I expected. It would probably do me good to go a few rounds of practice and vs. CPU before jumping online if I'm going to swap back and forth. I should have had no problem pulling Chun's Ultra II on a pad, but I couldn't get it out for shit.

Finally, having some unexpected issues with El Guapo. Got everything working on the PS3 side (not as much soldering to do there), but the 360 side is having some dual button input issues I can't figure out. Didn't happen with my first dual mod either. Time to call in the specialists. While that's being worked on, I'll go back to El Kabong
240535, I fought a E. Honda dude who was insane
Posted by L_O_Quent, Sat Aug-21-10 01:11 AM

240516, I "fought" two As...
Posted by jimaveli, Fri Aug-20-10 12:04 PM
- I got completely owned by the A Akuma. First round I ate a perfect. I had him cornered and low on energy during the second round. I didn't see a weak punch or low kick, but I saw the ultra after he escaped my weak corner trap game with a slickish crossup. Holy shit, he was good.

- The A Chun-Li was all crossups. I made her eat a couple of ultras on that BS, but it was never really close. Owned again.

- I still hate all Ryus..even the scrubs. That insane overhead into combo business chaps my hide. When I beat a Ryu, I want to turn on my mic and cuss at them for playing with that lame bastard.

- I've been playing some really good Kens lately. Good matches too. Still a bit too much SRK/Throw shenanigans but some really good kick-centric Kens are out there.

- Seeing some dope Dudleys on the scene too. I played a B Dudley who hit me with a flower after I missed an ultra. Really? Keep it classy, huh?

- I love Makoto and the ways folks try to play her..her low health is a tragedy.

- I don't love Vega (or the way folks play Vega).

- El Fuerto..ehh..not really liking the way folks play him either. Played a B who splashed his way through life. Cheaped me twice ftw.

- Blanka...I forgot he was on the game. Didn't like the way folks played him either. Basically, I pretty much hate playing all charge characters.

- I can't beat Balrog. That is all. I'll have to training room my way to that. I HAVE to figure out what stops what, because I refuse to believe that Gouken doesn't have anything to stop the typical Balrog shenanigans. Right now it just feels that way.

- Guile's EX flash kick is some boolsheet. The reach is what has me sensitive. I played a B Guile (from my job)..got beat 6 times straight on 3 outta 5 rounds. A few of them were down to the last hit on the last round, but still...lost. I EX Gouken Blocked Guile's ultra. That ain't right.

- My sessions are all about the streaks. I'll win 6 out of 7, then lose 8 out of 10. Last night, it felt like I lost 18 out of 20. If it wasn't typical online cheesiness (Juri), I was just outclassed by C+ and B players who clearly have more hours logged than me and know all of their character's counters, punishes, easiest max combos, etc.

- The handful of really good fights (25% 'even matches' + 25% 'learning experiences' with really good players) make the 50% cheese-athon BS matches online worth it..kinda.

- I think its time that I hit up the training room with Gouken to finally learn a couple of better punishes and FADC (whooo!). I have to figure out, for sure, how to work the Gouken Block for more diabolical damage. If I can figure out how I did a Gouken Block ---> Ultra 1 to take out a B Chun-Li, I'm coming for everybody's lunch money and sugar cookies.

LMFAO. Ryu is some bullshit.
Even with the nerfs. He's always just been "good". Near the top if he isn't the best character. I can't play him because my Dan game continually influences how I play all other "shotos" -- that I try to rush down more than I do the zone game.

re: Gouki (Akuma) -- now HE is some bullshit. Forget the air fireballs, those are garnish. His ground game is absolutely nasty. He can get a vortex of sorts going.

>- I love Makoto and the ways folks try to play her..her low

I've always loved Makoto (no Kells). but she is an ill fit for this game's mechanics and her health kills her. I can't believe she's considered "worse than Dan". LOL, when 3rd Strike Online comes out people will be using her like they use Ryu and Ken and Juri. She is flaming in that game.

>- El Fuerto..ehh..not really liking the way folks play him
>either. Played a B who splashed his way through life. Cheaped
>me twice ftw.

El Asso Wipo (or as we call him, simply "E!") is a nuisance, because of his constant movement. I can beat him with Dan but I have to be very, very, aggressive, and make no mistakes (in other words, I'd have to be on a pad).

>- Blanka...I forgot he was on the game. Didn't like the way

I actually hate fighting him more than Guile or N! (Dictator/M. Bison/Vega). Because of his "button mash" anti-air. This is beyond his crazy normals and his charge/turtle game.

The Butt Washin' Man (Boxer/Rog/Bison) is a killer. I'm not sure of the Gouken match up but he basically is good against anyone who has to depend on fireballs to survive. Plus, he has a moderately easy Ultra (I) set up, off his "Buffalo" move.

LOL @ Gouken Blocked. I remember famously getting my ass kicked at a tournament against someone using Gouken. I can't get inside with Dan at all... you have to get the zone game up. And... if you didn't already know... Throw into Ultra = Cheese

Overhead. Crossup. Fast fireball. Priority. Throw shenanigans. Poking. EX Spin Kick with wild priority. Akuma saying "man, Ryu has a strong ass ultra 2. Wish I had his health.". Gouken saying "so, they just give him MY DAMN ULTRA!? And make it stronger!? FOHWTBS. I'ma disappear again."

I was locked in that vortex when I ate a perfect vs that A Gouki. His health makes playing with him such a huge risk. People with excellent rushdown discipline can make him a beast, but running asshole air fireballs hoecakes are victims to be because they only have to slip up a few times for it to be curtains. And most of them can't mask the Super or Ultra well enough to actually land it on a sane person.

Dictator...arggg.

Vs mode may eventually make me better cuz I can just roll up on one character over and over and figure out how to stop their stuff. I'm trying to figure out T. Hawk right now. Ohh, he has great health and his throw feels like something I don't want a throw to feel like (great reach, can come out of nowhere, appalling priority, etc).

According to the tier folks, Gouken is 5-5 with almost everyone, but he has a few bad matches too. No 2-8s IIRC, but a few 3-7s and 4-6s. Add in that I'm not good yet, and I have an advantage over no one!

I only do it when folks are building their whole offense around getting cheap throws. It is at that time that I do a overhead throw into Ultra 1 with no remorse. I actually laugh like Ted DiBiase when he kicked that basketball away from the kid while he was dribbling.

I like calling it Gouken Block or Kung Fu block. Or SSFIV Parry.

FADC during a special into anything..still not good at it so far. I'm still in versus mode going at a few specific CPU opponents (Balrog, Bison, THawk, Lame Bastard, etc) trying to see what has priority over what. Following that excercise, I'm appalled at what can slow down Balrog. On the same street, I'm officially a poker now. Boo.

Vega? Basically playing him like Fuerto but with a hand always on the fierce button. I played a really horrible throw shenanigans Vega that soured me on the character, but its just scrub stuff. On both sides. If I could stop it, they couldn't get away with trying to do it.

Good looking out. I've been on the ball with that though..thinking about this issue. Breaking bad habits from playing Arcade mode took me a while. Now I play the CPU with new eyes. Its clear stuff like:

- the CPU does not flub counter opps. If they get you, they got you.
- the CPU doesn't base their whole offense on crossups. Yeah, I said it. They don't do it enough, but they certainly don't do it all the time. On that note...
- Humans have no qualms about cross-up into throw shenanigans. Or just throw shenanigans = my whole offense type of stuff in general. On some old win and get a D for offense steez. The CPU doesn't do that unless they're playing with Gief or Hawk. And even then...
- the CPU isn't harsh. Its rare that they combo like they should with certain characters. Otherwise, Gouki would be tought to beat. Its like they should somehow go and patch in combos for the computer once the heads get a game and go to town on it.

I was basically kept into a zone. Could not jump = Air throw. Couldn't rush in or think because a throw would come after some ticking

they all kept losing to Gief. Which means if I get a chance again, they will learn the error of their throw cheesing ways....

I took on a Dan this morning. Got straight owned. I had no idea how to defend the Dan rushdown. Also didn't know that the Dan short jump kick had the type of priority that he used it for. Without me knowing how to slow that down, he get get in my face whenever. He did a couple of throw shenanigan tactics on me to make sure I was aware that I was playing an online opponent. And of course, dude was all about the taunts. I got stunned at least twice. I "fought" him twice. If I pulled one round out of my ass, I don't remember it or how. I got P'd at least once. One round it was down to the wire but I Gouken slid my ass right into a Dan ultra 1 for the L...didn't realize that he switched ultras from one match to the next. That reminded me.

because his normals suck, and very few of his moves are "free" (if even a few frames short of such) framewise a lot of his game is due to people not expecting to face him. The LK "Dan Kick" is a common weapon in his poking arsenal. The HK one is only used for crossups and in combos mostly. the throwing game is also a good deal of his game.

There are a few elite Dan players online, I wonder if you faced one of them. I can't believe someone actually used U1 in a game where U2 is available though... U2 is one of those things that actually put Dan in the "viable" column this time around, because of the fact that you can either FADC or set it up much like Ryu's Metsu Hadouken.

U1 is good for interruption but setting it up takes a lot of meter (basically your only option is to Super Taunt into it after a super canceled Gadouken)...or else you have to hit with a full focus crumple.

I'm grateful for the bit of buff he's been given but sometimes I wish Capcom would stop intentionally making him suck and make him a "regular" fighter with jokey properties (i.e. a certain fat ass I despise) so that I can get my true rushdown Shoto on. I think the closest besides this game he's ever gotten that status was in Pocket Fighter, of all games. LOL.

I'm getting better at seeing the cheesethrows coming and countering as harshly as possible (and verbally countering with a 'throw that, bitch'..my mic is never on btw).

I'm a C+ and prolly will be forever. Still having MAJOR losing streaks countered with a few wins here and there.

- I Fought a cool as Gen that barely beat me out
- Still hate fighting Vega
- Lots of Blankas lately..ehh
- Akuma/Ken is becoming the new Ryu in that I'm playing those characters a lot..throwfest/SRK-dependent Kens make me want to retire from all games..wild cheesy
- Lots of Sakuras too..she's cool I guess. Some of her combos are criminally easy to pull off/get caught in..gotta have something to counter the health
- Over this whole time, I've fought a handful of Goukens. Some folks were just trying something, a couple of them were around my level but I beat most of them, and I got beatdown by 2 higher-level goukens.
- THawk can eat a dick. The same one that Gief can eat..just a little moreso.
- Makoto is soo great..saw a couple of vids (Violent vRyu) that had her looking straight lethal.

Throw-cheesing/tick-throwing/crossover-throwing...soooo, apparently folks who play with pads have a button mapped to light punch+short kick? Is THAT why I'm having such an issue getting out of OBVIOUS throw-shenanigan situations? Do I just have bad timing? Or is the throwing cancel window so small that its hard to get? I ask cuz I'm just blown away by the volume of folks who clearing realize/feel that throwing is somewhat frowned upon but they use it as a major part of their game. Other times, I've had matches where everything was going..focus attacks, counters, footsies, mindgames, dashing, battling, good stuff. Then, things get down to the wire and here comes the throw shenanigans..like they KNOW its shady, but they're trying to get out a win. C'mon man!

I had to send El Guapo back to the custom board designer last week. Something was causing a glitch on the 360 side of the stick that I couldn't figure out. He got it fixed and dropped it off at FedEx Thursday to be sent to my job Friday. Unfortunately, they left it at the station, which I didn't find out until after 5 Friday afternoon. The plan of replacing the art on the stick (GameOnGrafx.com for your printing, trust me, it's worth the extra cash!) was shot to shit. Monday ity should be here. They better refund me for this

Hopefully I'll be able to finish fixing my car (rear spring broke, WTF?!?) and get to the stick and post up pictures of the masterpiece

That EX TU into Ultra is hard as shit and not really practical in a match. You're better off just learning TU > FADC > f+hk into Ultra. It's an extra bar but it's a whole lot easier to pull off.

good news practice is paying off on the ex tu --->>> ultra, even landed it in a match!!!!

bad news: played like a scrub beginner ken player, got baited and punished after throwing WAY too many TU's anticipating jump ins, instead of being patient and waiting for real openings, lost like 8 out of 10 after going about 10-2 last night. frustration kept growing, i hate to turn it off unless its on a win, so i kept losing sloppy matches (cmon, who tries to do a wakeup low kick when a guy has an ultra???)

trying to get those combos nailed down, but my head was in a terrible place today.

Tried to tell y'all I had something big planned! This sucker is heavy, and I don't even want to think about how much it all cost for the final tally (definitely not telling the wife). But it's like the 'Cadillac of Fight Sticks', and I'd do it all again

L_O, your case should be here from teh builder sometime this week, so I can get started on it pretty soon. I don't think I'll go all out on teh lights and such, as I'm a little too far away for tech support should something go wrong (it shouldn't, but I worry about this kind of thing). I'll e-mail you on some specifics later today.

What a (bad) weekend in terms of quality opposition. It started off wild shady and got better before going back down with throwathons. I lost like 500 PP in about 30 minutes Saturday morning. Throwcheeseathons were in full effect. Really, I think those throwcheese cats are ruining my game, which wasn't anything special to begin with. Now, I spend half of the match looking for the throw shenanigans to jumpoff. Its great that I'm getting better at stopping it from some characters, but damn.

This is me on my Ghostface "I don't want nobody sounding like me on NO ALBUM" shit: Its clear that most of the PS3 online community KNOWS DAMN WELL THAT BASING AN OFFENSE AROUND SIMPLE THROWS IS SOME HO ASS SHIT. I write that because SOME cats will wait until shit is down to the wire before they start doing it sometimes. Or if they lose the first round, the last two rounds (if they make it that far) are throwathons. Now take in mind, I'm FINALLY getting better at avoiding, and in some cases, punishing the hell out it. I elbowed mad hocakes in the top of their cheezy heads throughout this holiday weekend. I finally have a handle on the standard T. Hawk fare (jump-in kick --> command throw of choice), so it takes one of his (outrageously damaging) ultras for any T. Hawk to deal with me. And even then, I'm alright if my mind is right. They come unglued when I have 4 or 5 ways to avoid their basic bullsheet.

Other notes:

- I now hate Blanka and Bison more than Ryu, with his overpowered, everything combos into something it doesn't seem like it should combo into, punk ass. Blanka is like a cheezier Hakan..jump-in kick -> throw shenanigans + overprioritized rollage and buttonmash anti-air. That sliding punch is criminal too. Makes me miss Chun-Li with her crossup bullcorn, throw shenanigans, and killer combos. And Bison's bread and butter stuff that folks (ab)use just has outlandish priority vs Gouken. I'm looking at that scissor kick right now. And the Psycho Crusher isn't nearly as punishable as it should be. And folks I've come up against generally play him in a VERY hocake manner.

- Sooo many Guiles and Balrogs all of a sudden. Fuck Capcom for what they did for Guile's sonic boom. The EX feels almost broken. I had a dude who dashed IN FRONT OF a light sonic boom. I Gouken blocked all of his shit into oblivious. Goukenblock ---> Forbidden SRK - good evening Guile shenanigans. Balrog..I guess its about time.

- Just incase ya'll aren't sure, its still fuck Ryu over here..but I'm getting better at dealing with him, but damnit man. I've actually played a couple of decent Ryus lately where I didn't feel shenanigan'd to death when I played them.

- Akuma...I love that he takes damage so badly. Otherwise, air/super duper fireball/EX shoto-spinkick folks may as well stand next to Ryu on my list of hate.

- A good Ken with throw-shenanigans is basically not beatable by me. Its like Akuma with better health.

- Abel..dope but fuck that Super and BOTH Ultras. I played one that went roll, elbow into air throw. Sprinkle in random brokenish Super/Ultra. I got owned.

- Cody is dope too. His ultras take appalling damage. As does Guy's. I've gotten owned and straight owned a couple too. Finished one round with the mist from a Cody Hurricane surrounding me. He missed. I didn't. Sweet.

- Makoto..sweet, sweet Makoto. I want to keep loving you but Big Ben Chick Choke --> Ultra 1 is the most hocake bullshit on the game this side of Gouken's overhead throw into anything (which I don't use outta decency but several Goukens I've played recently don't have an issue with SETTING UP overhead throw into combo-ish stuff OR a straight up ultra through typical throw shenanigan methods).

- Ibuki..sliding neckbreaker..I will block thee and punish accordingly. When I don't, I always feel robbed. I played one that had a throw attempt as the end of a combo. C'mon! The bia already has some pretty appalling combos that can take you from around 2/3 life to around than a third. And stunned. At which time the person just does the same combo again and you're outty. And folks are throwcheezin it up with her too! C'mon!

- El Fuerte: run, run, splash...run, splash, run, run slide, run, throwshenigan...run, run, insanely damaging ultra..run, run, run, run. Playing a high level El is the definition of 'I need to go do something else with my time cuz I don't even want to be at that level'.

and her U2 takes her out of the "owned by Dan if he gets in there" column... but I hate that because of her SRK + P command throw a trap can be set up well enough to keep you from jumping in and if you try to turtle her fireball shenanigans you'll be eating a ground throw. Very, very annoying.

LOL @ Cheesier Hakan -- that is true. The bullshit sliding technique. But the button mash anti-air is the most annoying thing about Blanka. His focus attack shenanigans (not FADC, just throwing the FA as a mixup) can be a pain.

and N! (Bison) is bullshit. Now thanks to U2, which is based off one of his more effective moves (headstomp) makes fighting him much more annoying.

Dashing in front of a light sonic boom is an old Guile staple. Before Guile was able to dash in games, Guile typically achieved the "getting over there" by doing his command knee attack. What kind of pisses me off about -using- Guile, can't remember if they changed it, is that sonic booms miss from point blank range.

Balrog is a tough opponent if you're fighting someone who's on top of their "Butt Washing" (Buffalo Headbutt) game.

>- Akuma...I love that he takes damage so badly. Otherwise,
>air/super duper fireball/EX shoto-spinkick folks may as well

and that's not even the WORST thing about Gouki. If you play him like air-fireball cheese, you're going to get GUILED. Gouki's normals are where his shenanigans really begin.

>- Abel..dope but fuck that Super and BOTH Ultras. I played one
>that went roll, elbow into air throw. Sprinkle in random

Ultra 2 is BULLSHIT. I hate that move, it's like a flaming version of the Raging Demon.

>Guy's. I've gotten owned and straight owned a couple too.
>Finished one round with the mist from a Cody Hurricane
>surrounding me. He missed. I didn't. Sweet.

Cody can sometimes get in that annoying "Gouki" / "Ryu" category with the keep away tactics he can pull with the Rock. and the damage taken from a simple jump in HP standing HP Cody Hurricane is some BS.

>- Makoto..sweet, sweet Makoto. I want to keep loving you but

LOL... that's an old Makoto 3rd Strike staple. Too bad, she's kind of flaming to use against most characters in the game. She can't parry, so part of her efficacy is lost on this game and its system. The way some of her moves hit/the priority they have is all off. and I hate hitting super after the command grab, instead of the ultra. You can still get ultra after it, but it's flaming...

>- Ibuki..sliding neckbreaker..I will block thee and punish

Throw cheese with Weasel Girl is annoying but should anyone begin the vortex, she officially starts eating da poopoo.

LOL. E! is quite annoying. I remember I had to switch back to using a pad to fight him with Dan... those running shenanigans are really annoying.
241563, Gotta learn to tech them throws
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue Sep-07-10 07:47 PM
It's easy to get the hang off with practice. It's an OS throw tech. What you do is while crouch blocking hit lp & lk slightly later than when you think you're going to get thrown. If they try to throw you, you tech it or hit them out of walking toward you, if they try to hit you, you block it. To best describe it, hit lp & lk to the rhythm of your opponents block strings. Mashing throw will tech some of the time but you'll be hit out of it more times than not.

Now granted, you may not tech every throw since lag plays a part in timing. And high level play will easily punish predictable OS throw tech (Rufus's dive kick, Cammy's dive kick, Ryu's EX Tatsu is just a small amount of moves that do this) but you'll at least be able to tech most of them.

To practice the timing, go into training mode and pick Ken. Have ken do EX tatsu and throw. And then have Ken do EX tatsu and SRK on you. If you're doing it right, you'll both tech the throw and block the SRK

but I read it was really good. You get frame advantage after a EX green hand now so if you get hit with it it's a mixup in Gief's favor. Jumping out will get you hit with Lariat or HK or another green hand. pressing a button or blocking will get you SPD'd.

242414, ugh, I'm in the worst slump EVER
Posted by steelreserve40, Tue Sep-21-10 09:52 AM
took a few days off to go thru mass effect 1 again, and I dunno if everyone got amazing or if I got terrible, but I've lost like 700 player points.

thing that really sucks? I've been practicing my combos and execution more than ever.

I've been playing sagat, and finally got his hit confirm combo down pretty well. I've had my joystick for 2 months now, and I feel real comfortable with it.

but.....I can't land it in a match. for anything. I choke and immediately go back into terrible habits. lazy tiger shots which get me jump kicked/combo'ed. over anticipating tiger uppercuts which whiff and get me punished. panic ultras trying for a spectacular comeback which get me ko'ed. trying to use meaty attacks/hit confirm combos on knockdown characters with invincible reversals.

I've been trying hard to have good defense, especially against faster rushdown styles/peeps with really long block string combos.

problem is, I feel like I don't know how to turn it on and apply pressure that well.

ugh. trying to learn.

how did you get out of your slump? how long till your game really started coming together and advancing?

>
>I try not to worry about player points at all. That shit just
>gets depressing, Just get my battle points up!

This is all real. I'll regurg and add a little...

Step one is on you, though...stop throwing out whiffomatic ultras. That was my biggest problem when I started (ask Amon and crew from 360..I'm PS3 now). People see a random ultra coming a mile away most of the time and it has the probability of a half-court shot of hitting. Hell, folks even trick you into throwing a desperation ultra. Once I reduced that (I still relapse every now and then), I was better off.

You have to stay with it and know that your player points are gonna vary depending on streaks, who the hell is online (I played one 5 match streak with nothing but B+ and A cats), and, most importantly, how you're playing at the moment. Yes, you again...

- I had one Saturday morning where I ran into a fatal mix of really good people and really cheezy folks. And I found ways to lose to all of them. Whiffing clear counter opps and all of that. Like some ole' winning 2 out of 15 shit. I tossed a controller on some Dudley tossing a rose shit. I was straight peeved. So peeved that I couldn't concentrate well enough to beat a few gimme opponents.

- I've been in a zone where I was whooping almost everybody, so if I lost it was either much respect to the better man or 'eff you' to some shady ass cheeser bullcorn. I like those zones.

- Other times, I've been thinking about Black Angelika or Rebecca Linares (I hate that they both went fake on a nigga, but still...), some chick that's coming by later on (insert R&B cooings about tearing it up) or just getting ready to head to the gym/club/bar. That's when I take some unneccesary losses to lame folks cuz I don't play Gouken patiently enough to aggravate a would-be cheezer into creating their own exit strategy from my screen.

I've lost 500 points in one session and got them all back the next. Its a game of runs as long as you stay cool, don't become so combo setup-happy that you forego the fact that interrupting, countering, winning the mindgames and just plain out doing damage is the key to the game, and ignore the cheezers while learning from the Gs (I've played a couple of amazing Gens).

Last thing...pay attention to how YOU are getting punished. Are you jumping into damage when you know better? If so, stop it. Figure out how to get where you want to be spacing-wise without so much risk. Are you getting jammed up trying to survive a rush? That's when you have to get your counter game tight. What cancels what? SOMETHING that you have with Sagat cancels what they are trying to do to you..most of the time that is. Besides max damage combo-ing, this is my biggest weakness..I just don't know how to punish some things at all, and I refuse to believe that almost anything is completely safe in this game (beside tick-throw cheesery online). I'm getting better as I play more, but I don't have it yet.

One more last thing..the mindgame..err..game. Are you getting Daffy Duck/Bugs Bunny'd, duck season/rabbit season'd into being damaged? Get in their heads, not the other way around.

Posted by BigReg, Wed Sep-29-10 08:25 AM
As someone who was taking Rufus out alot online a few months ago before my current hiatus (which I gotta fix cause im going to a local tourney this weekend), I find the rankings of actual usage in online street fighter hilarious. Who wouldda thunk some of the best chars would be the least used..lol

Agreed. One thing..it can't be on doggone Sunday during the football season. I'm all up a place watching EVERY game almost every Sunday. I can't be trying to get my mind right for no battling on a mid-day Sunday!

242950, A+ Gouken!
Posted by jimaveli, Fri Oct-01-10 09:00 PM
Not me..I played one tonight and got straight owned. And I didn't feel cheated or played. Dude had a straight up mastery of the character. Now, true enough, I was up 5-1 on the online session as a whole and I was dealing with the typical cheesy type of 'strategies', so I wasn't in a real righteous zone to be taking on someone who was legit AND great.

But wow...I got P'd for round 1. Round 2, I tried to get my mind right and at least compete. I did some chip damage. And by some I mean a little bit. Maybe two hits. Otherwise, I couldn't get anywhere near him without feeling like he was going to end the round. He eventually wiped me out with a stun string combo followed by another 'training mode' combo off of a focus attack. Whooo...straight ownery. I gave up the lovin like prom night after the 'fight'.

Two fights later I double P'd a novice Ken. I felt bad, but shit son! I just got owned in a mirror match! I was sensitive!

Jimaveli: update...fuck Bison/Dictator and Blanka.

Posted by spenzalii, Fri Oct-01-10 09:39 PM
Don't see too many online. But his focus/fierce/cr. roundhouse shit works.

As it stands, I find my self doing damage with the Fatman more than Man Hands. While he has a limited moveset, Honda takes a licking and dishes some punishment too. It's easy to overcome sloppy defense when you can hit the opponent twice and even out the damage, which is good and bad (encourages sloppy play). But if you're tired, drunk, or both, it works...
242967, I think you should stick with Honda
Posted by Mafamaticks, Sat Oct-02-10 03:21 PM
All you have to do is sit there and let your opponents kill themselves. Honda's a fucking wall.

Whiff Ochio throw for meter,
Jab into HHS,
EX headbutt & butt splash to anti air and keep your opponent blocking from half screen out of fear.

I can go on and on. Honda is a tool shed.
242980, Never thought wiffing for ultra
Posted by spenzalii, Sat Oct-02-10 11:00 PM
The HHS works wonders though, as does the headbutt. Need to work out the anti air more though.

Never bother with UltraII. UltraI, when it connects, is like death. Honda does the deed, but I can never turn my back on Chun Li. I've rolled with her with every version of SF I ever played. Wish her head stomp was back to SFII levels of deadliness...

It won't get you ultra meter but it'll get you EX meter and when he has EX he's fucking scary. As far as anti air, if you don't have charge, FP. If they try to cross you up you'll swat them out the sky. If they jump from a distance it'll trade some of the time, but it'll be in your favor.

Ultra II is good. cr. lp xx HHS xx FADC > Ultra II is nasty. Whether you hit them or they block it.
242987, Math, I hate fighting your Abel. LOL.
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun Oct-03-10 02:21 PM
Like, I hate fighting Abel in general, but facing the ultra blockstring of doom every time something is flubbed is a level of frustration I've only experienced when fighting Rufus.

It had been probably a couple of months since I've had a player match (think the last time was against Jet and Spenz on the infamous PING OF DOOM session)
242996, RE: Math, I hate fighting your Abel. LOL.
Posted by Mafamaticks, Mon Oct-04-10 05:30 AM
If I go for a step kick after a block string, there is a gap in it. If you block a step kick and you time you counter right:

Throw beats out everything I do besides command grab and neutral jump. If I go for a close FP you have one frame to throw it so it's hard to do, but can be done.

Reversal SRK beats out everything I do besides block

I guess Abel is hard to deal with for Dan since all of his normals are so slow.
243033, this is true for everyone
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Oct-05-10 06:17 AM
>I guess Abel is hard to deal with for Dan since all of his
>normals are so slow.

the only thing I wish they would change about Dan, is remove his "slowness" in certain areas. If Rufus can go around being the new Yun/Yang, Dan needs to have his Alpha 2 original speed of normals. I play that game after so much SFIV, even Alpha 3 and other games, and I'm shocked. He's still old school Street Fighter-style as far as combos are concerned.

I noticed it being less painful to fight Abel when using Boxer but I can't use him very well (charge characters I have some issues being predictable) because of Dan's most key flaw.
243001, I remember that match...

Sorry about the delay and I do want a USB Fightstick. PS3 only and Wired is fine. Blue buttons/lights on the top row (PUNCH), Yellow lights/buttons on the bottom (KICK), Black case, and Blue Ball on a black stick with this image: http://yudhis97.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Chun-Li.jpg.

Example stick would be: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Arcade-Pro-3-SA-Playstation-3/dp/B002FL0T8U/ref=sr_1_8?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1287246604&sr=1-8

This Madcatz as well: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Street-Fighter-IV-FightStick/dp/B001M22VCU/ref=acc_glance_vg_ai_purchase_similarities_t_6

A happy medium between those two would be awesome.

Posted by steelreserve40, Mon Oct-18-10 09:44 AM
finally playing somewhat cerebrally

-practice mode has been paying off, feel REALLY comfortable with the fightstick now, and knock out most moves no problem. can get my sagat hit confirm combo and fadc out pretty consistantly, altho im yet to implement it into my gameplay, thats next.....

-stopped bad habits, pretty much stopped overanticipating tiger uppercuts, and last resort ultras. beat a few people doing desperation ultras, and took em out.

-mixing up my game more, no more predicible jump hk/sweep combos, catching dudes with throws more, putting on pressure in the corner, then hitting them with an overhead, and TU'ing fools when they try and jump out.

hard work and learning has paid off, this game does get more fun when you learn how to overcome the 'cheap' stuff, and adjust your game to actually earn it.

Been playing with her since World Warrior days. That's a longer commitment with any female I know! I'm just so set in my ways it's hard to adapt my style of play to her skill set. Jetblack has done it extremely well. But if I'm not careful or on point, a day with Chun Li online can be brutal. Old habits die hard, I tell you...

Now Honda? I can be drunk getting a blowjob and still manage to win a round or 3, without pulling out a super or ultra. Go figure
244075, RE: why is everyone playing lame ass rush down cammys?
Posted by dopedealer, Thu Oct-21-10 11:49 AM
agreed. cammy is crazy lame, moreso online.

feels like online a lot of her bullshit is safe on block, cant get a proper punish in.

if youre gonna go capitalize on a knock down, bait out that stupid cannon spike, duck it and punish.

i really hate that weird floaty command throw thing.

Blocked cannon spike (uppercut) can be punished by mostly everyone. Worse case scenario you can walk up sweep. Who do you play?

Cannon Drill (the horizontal shit. Spiral Arrow in SSF4) can be punished if it isn't spaced properly. For them to space it correctly, they have to be all the way across the screen. The move doesn't put you in a lot of block stun so as soon as you block you can jab into combo depending on who you play.

The regular Cannon Spike (the air move) is unsafe if they do it too high. The EX one is safe on block. However, both can be focused and punished.

The air move is shit. If you duck and block she can't do anything besides try to throw you after she lands. If you stick out a crouching move right before she lands (like a sweep)she'll land right into it.

Took out a B Ryu to get it. And it was some old down to the wire stuff..

We both had less than 25% in the third round. Mindgames were rampant. Good match overall. At the same time, I threw a Super (Gouken Forbidden SRK) and he threw a U2 (Ryu - Wannabe SRK). They cancelled each other out. Mindgame, mindgame, Ryu sweep attempt countered by U1 (Gouken Real SRK) for the win.

Still seeing too many Blankas, Balrogs, and Bisons. I got owned by a few heavy throwing and crossing Makoto's too. Where are the Chuns? I play like one a month (and lose).

245604, RE: Made it to B
Posted by jimaveli, Thu Nov-18-10 10:50 PM
- I've lost 1500 BPs since I hit B level. Oh well..I have had some hellified good battles with some dope players though. I never catch that A level Gouken who owned me something fierce a month or so ago.

- A lotta lower level folks freak out when they see the B AND Gouken and immediately resort to shenanigans outta the gate. If I shoot them, I'm brainless, but if they shoot me...

- A gangsta ass Gen is a monster to play against. I love it though.

- A fraud/lazy ass Honda is a monster to beat too. I don't love it.

- I love it when I dash out of, punish, and/or goose/gander a thrower. After they fail at setting up a throwathon for the 4th or 5th time, I can almost see 'what do I do now?' flash across the screen. Another note: If I take three or throws via shenanigans, I lift my self-imposed ban against doing a Gouken overhead throw into cheap damage. Its like my Ted DiBiase brass knuckles for throwing ass bitches. And yes, I know the diff. between 'intelligent' throws and 'I'm a thrower, and I'm throwin' just to throw' folks.

- Damn the Dolphins are getting owned on Thursday night..good thing I finally knew to sat hoe ass Brandon Marshall. Steve Johnson to the top! Oh...

- I wish I could quit immediately any time I get a Blanka. And I see a lot now. I wanna turn my mic on and berate after the third sliding punch attempt.

- A cheesy damage Dhalsim is a chore to deal with..I like the mindgames that can be played..not so big on the shenanigans. Gouken Blocking those long arms = bliss. It ruins so many cheap damage plans.

- FUCK. M. BISON. FUCK HIM.

- Balrog..eh..whatever..I'm getting better at dealing with the normal Balrog stuff.

- If Cammy didn't have such low HP, I'd consider her broken. Kraft madness. Throwathon absurdity. Cannon Spike is almost Ken SRK. When in doubt, folks throw them out like trash.

- I asked for Chun-Lis..I'd like to unask for them now. Slow fireball, walk up, throw attempt. Smash low kick. Slow fireball, walk up, low kick. Smash low kick. Throw attempt. Jump throw. Slow fireball, walk up, overhead scissor kick. Smash low kick.

- I see sooo many Sakuras now. I hate playing her. That one combo that EVERY high-level Sakura player bases their entire offense on (low fierce into EX spinkick into whatever they want because you are somehow still available to be damaged even more) chaps my hide something fierce. Folks do that combo, cross you up to lag abuse into the SAME DAMN COMBO. Of course, you're now stunned...guess what's coming? The SAME DAMN COMBO..AGAIN.

- Some cat named infamouspanda has brought a Ryu into my life that I can generally respect..good combos, no throw shenanigans (he'll throw from time to time but it never feels too cheap), great mindgames..makes me step my game up a little.

Overall, I have a grip on Gouken at a high C level. I have a decent feel of frames vs a lot of characters (Gouken sliding fist is punishable after block with a Tiger Uppercut..boo), I'm not whiffing too too much on basic stuff. Still, my combo/punish game needs a step-up. I can mindgame into punishing situations but I know that I don't maximim those opportunites at all. And that's crazy important when you're playing against GOOD people who don't mind basing a whole offense around throw spamming, tickish throwing and other cheapish damage when the funk is near the fan.

I was up 4-1 on him like "yeah, this fool ain't so tough"

Then he pealed off like 20 or so straight with 3 different characters.

Fuckin Breathless is soooo good. I read you can back dash out of it with Gief but it seems like your timing has to be godlike to pull that off.
244943, I don't think so
Posted by Mafamaticks, Sun Nov-07-10 04:31 PM
I think you can just mash it and it's up to me to time it since you're considered airborne when you back dash. If it wasn't for breathless that abel match would be 7-3 in your favor. It's 6-4 now.

245214, RE: Oh shit, it was green hand the whole time!
Posted by Mafamaticks, Fri Nov-12-10 08:11 AM
Green hand works. You have to input the command before I let it go though. I've had some instances where I grabbed Gief before the 2nd hit of the green hand connected.

You can definitely just mash back dash though. If I hold it you'll back dash out of range. if I let it go, you're considered airborne so you're invincible to it. I'd have to time my active frames to hit you as soon as you land from the back dash, and since you can cancel your recovery frames into another back dash, I'd have to time it frame perfect to catch you out of it which won't be happening.

246521, do you have lag problems? & cool sf gifts for xmas
Posted by steelreserve40, Mon Dec-06-10 09:59 AM
SO i recently realized i got really terrible lag on my HDTV. i have an OLD (2004) samsung 46" dlp set (as an early adopter paid $2200 back in '04, i shudder to think what set i could get now).

I suspected i had lag, terrible with ps2 games, but not really particularly noticeable at 720p with most games like fps's and gta 4.

read on the srk forums that almost all hdtvs have lag, did the rockband 2 test found out on that set I have almost 5 FRAMES of visual lag. no wonder my hit confirm was so tough to land, and I'd get beat in tick throws, I'd get thrown before my screen even registered it.

solution: for christmas, getting the '09 evo monitor, < 1/2 frame of visual lag, and pretty damn affordable.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059

also, if your into street fighter, and want some cool clothes, check out the triumvr/street fighter collection, they damn sure don't look retarded.

http://www.karmaloop.com/Vendor.aspx?VendorCode=TRM#genderId=0,sizeId=,subId=0,vendorId=225,optionalId=0,sortBy=8,showKazbah=true,pageNumber=1,pageSize=48

lastly, i just got married just about a month ago. as usual, 99% of the gifts are boring kitchenware. however one of my groomsman came through for me in epic form, getting me a SECOND TE fightstick, saying my wife can step into my world to play. so yep, now I have $300 in street fighter controllers.
246569, Dual Mod them sticks....
Posted by spenzalii, Mon Dec-06-10 08:48 PM
Every TV has some lag. Some more than others. I'm good playing on my plasma rather than investing in a monitor, which I just don't have the room for. It would be nice to have if I build a cab, but it's not that serious for me
246689, THE NEW MONITOR IS NO JOKE
Posted by steelreserve40, Thu Dec-09-10 07:38 AM
the asus VH236 joint is not playing around. after realizing my hdtv's had significant lag (my dinosaur 2004 samsung dlp joint had 3.75 FRAMES of lag. that means i get hit with 2 ryu jabs before my display even shows it), i got the new monitor as an early xmas present, and wifey let me set it up once it came in yesterday.

its no joke! i can finally block tight blockstrings, and anti-air more successfully. my hit confirm combo is way easier, and im landing or teching way more throws. Finally got Sagat back up to 50%, and im planning on keeping him positive.

if you've had any doubts, and have some disposable income, check out the asus joint, its on sale now with a $20 rebate too!!!!

I might start ordering the parts by Monday and work on it over the 3 day weekend. As for your template, it's more video game women than SF, so it seems all over the place. 248410, I had a dude accuse me of...
Posted by jimaveli, Fri Jan-07-11 07:53 PM
spamming an ultra. What!? How is that feasible? Maybe I don't know what spamming is...

I (still) play with Gouken. I use U1 (Real SRK) every time. I use him like a counter character. I play mindgames, figure out what people want to do, take it away from them which creates frustration, and weaker cats then make the mistakes necessary to allow me to murk them in horrid fashion. Nothing groundbreaking, but it can work.

And this was a turtling Guile (*makes a face*) with a B..maybe a B+. So you know it was a Sonicboomathon mixed with trying to bait me into jumping into a Flash kick. I wasn't having that, so I just zoned him out, stayed on the ground unless he was and killed him softly. Dashing and jumping away from several throw attempts warmed my heart during all three rounds. I basically don't risk teching throws when I don't have a good feeling about the connection, so I can imagine that a desperate throwalot cat could be upset.

My combo game is still unsufficient, but I mindgame, counter, crossup and mixup pretty nice. One thing I've gotten pretty good at...timing a wakeup U1. Its great for taking out cats who are trying to go out shady with something up close that people don't normally do upclose. I was in a round 1 vs a Ryu and it was down to the wire. After a knockdown, the Ryu sets up to U1 me as I get up and go out cheap. The screen moves to show Ryu's U1. As soon as it comes back to normal, I land the command for MY U1. It was the flyest shit ever visually as the Real SRK went right through Ryu's U1 for the kill. I lost the other two rounds but hey...

Well...this lame Guile cat tried to hit me with a close range sonic boom on wakeup to take me out in the 3rd round. Wakeup Real SRK, holla atcha. 'Wat a Pussy' is the subject title that comes as soon as the win screen is showing. I apologize for dodging his throws, countering his 38 sonic booms, air spinkicking out of his ultra, and not jumping into 5 flash kicks. He replies telling me that I ran the whole time and that I spam MY ULTRA. I'm confused.

Overall, cheesy cats took me from 5200 down to 2500...I'm back around 4000, but I have had some really bad runs sometimes. It made me tighten up my mindgames and mixups, but I still don't have the combo brilliance necessary to be top-shelf. I still loathe throwathons, Blanka, Bison (both of them), and Edmond 'headbutt/booty bumpathos' Honda. I've played some dope Ryus, so I have some respect there. Akumas too. Seeing Ken selected is an automatic eyeroll because most folks play him sooooo shady.

Two of my sticks have been nominated for an award over on the SRK forums. No way I'm going to win though. Not with this in the running:

Still, I'm happy with a nod. Jet's will be done in a bit (did you get my e-mail mayne?). I'm having a small issue with L_O's art sizing which should be fixed soon, then I can really get rolling on that one. Been going back and forth on how I want to wire it, and I think I know what I'm doing now.

Wonder if they will be able to do it as a patch to the current SSFIV. Really don't want to buy another copy of the game then have 2 useless SFIV discs taking up space. Evil Ryu and Oni (Shin Akuma, I suppose) look viscious, but can't take a punch apparently (like Seth)

Got more fab work to do on L_O and Jet's sticks. Keep running into things to chane or didn't go according to plan. But one should be done this week (I hope) and the other as soon as the replacement parts come in.

After it's shipped, everybody jump on and punish his ass while he makes the transition from a pad. After that, it's probably back to business.

The stick itself is quite nice. I'm proud of it. Pics and video whenever he posts them.

LO, yours is so much more involved and is being worked on now

Um I've been fucking with Dudley lately. He's Zangief with combos. When he gets in it's trouble, but he has a hard time getting in when it comes to certain match ups. His links are pretty tight too so online is gonna be a hassle with him. I'm gonna bring him on inna few though.

not sure how that will go with a Blu-Ray since it has some protective coating.

Still, no. Your E. Honda would do no such thing. lol.

I should be on sometime in the evening.

I finally looked and realized that I didn't have all of the costumes. I saw how much they were and I still don't. Of course, I bought the Shoto pack and the chicks so that Makoto could do her thing. Fuck Dictator and 'nem.

I also JUST discovered the whole 'watch your matches' thing. That ate an hour of my time. I will certainly be all over that. I HATED how I played a few matches..even some that I won. I watched myself get punked by a good and aggressive Akuma and the pain came back all over again. And the bitch had the nerve to throw me ftw. He didn't even have to do that.

I straight up ate the soul of a SRKing/EXing AND throwathon Ken yesterday. Round 2, and he went for an jump-in kick into Ultra 1 with no connecting combo. This of course gave me time to counter with the REAL SRK (Gouken U1) before his ultra hit. Soul burned.

Throwing ass dudes are taking over. Most B+ cats and As are all about throw shenanigans. I played the #1 Gouken in the world and got owned legit though. Its to the point that a lot of my game revolves around countering/punking/punishing that bullshit. When I play someone who ISN'T all about the throwathons, it...ummm...errr...THROWS me off! Sometimes I like having my mic on just to make a 'yawn' noise when folks try to throw me and I jump or dash out of it and counter with a pimp hand or scissor kick. Souls burning all over.

I also looked at my win percentages with Gouken against certain characters. Of course my %s were appallingly low again Bison, Balrog, Vega, Blanka, and Chun Li. My overall is like 42%. Damn.

251399, Played an elite Gen
Posted by jimaveli, Fri Feb-25-11 09:21 PM
First round, I caught him being careless a few times but didn't punish in full and ultimately still lost. Second route...it was a murder. I got smothered by the rushdown, couldn't get the spacing I wanted and went out way cold with a super into the bicycle kick for the L. Can't front on that cat.

Grabbin niggas is still outta control though. YouTube has folks thinking that throwing is a legit strategy.

Oh...uck-fay Abel. Forreal.

Posted by L_O_Quent, Fri Feb-25-11 03:47 PM
Works perfectly now because I was averaging two to three games before it just said loading or showed the pre fight screen with the fire in the background for forever.

Got BlazBlue CS but that shit hit the door on some Bolt shit. The shortest time ever I've had a game shorter than any game ever because I couldn't feel it the second it put it in but flipped it for 3-4 times it's value and ended up with MvC3.

I need to check to see if I'm missing costumes for E.Honda.

Get at me either email or twitter and I'll hop on this weekend @LOQuent and I'm +6 hours ahead
