For LO. New SSF4 posts go here.

Let's go.
231360, thank you sir but the title is yuck
Posted by L_O_Quent, Thu May-06-10 03:58 PM
Someone tried to tell me that damn movie was classic hip hop not to long ago and I almost committed violence..

Could someone put the lingo down and give an explanation for those of us who don't know what a "cancel" "focus attack" etc. is?
231375, I've always liked the name...the movie...not so much
Posted by jetblack, Thu May-06-10 06:05 PM
lol
231379, Finally learned to do ultras for charge characters yesterday.
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Thu May-06-10 06:31 PM
I still can't do down charges to save my life so I probably won't play with them much.
231384, Yeah, I can't even wrap my head around downward charges
Posted by JFrost1117, Thu May-06-10 06:48 PM
Which one of those sunzabitches has a diagonal-down-back charge? I just gave up, lol. I think on SFIV, I did Honda's ultra a few times, by total accident.
231389, Guile and Vega have those weird ass
Posted by jetblack, Thu May-06-10 07:51 PM
Supers. They are tough to pull off they must be easier with a stick on a pad nearly impossible.
231400, I think I may have done Guile's Ultra once
Posted by spenzalii, Thu May-06-10 09:12 PM
I can't do it again to save my life. Thank goodness for his new Ultra...

Charge characters are easy to do with a stick. That was my main reason behing building one - to finally get Chun LI's ultra out.
231413, Guile's isn't that hard
Posted by Wonderl33t, Fri May-07-10 12:39 AM
google it for tips. You actually don't do the exact stick motion shown in the manual. It's a little different.

absence, Al_Tru_Ist, BreezeBoogie, dank_reggae, Drewmathic, Ir_Cuba, jacksonwonderland, LBs Finest, LML, LVing, MIAthinker, Omar_Medina, Robert, Roofdogg10, Sandbox194, Supnakga, thafuture, wonderl33t
231449, not true, I learned that technique on a pad
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri May-07-10 10:35 AM
once I figured out WTF it actually was

charge db then df, db, uf (it's almost like doing the DB charge than a hcb then uf)

that motion is nowhere near as bullshit as the "Geese motion" or shit they have you doing in SNK games)

Chun-Li's had that super motion before (in the Alpha games if I'm not mistaken)
231460, Oh, because that's not at ALL what it looks like
Posted by Marauder21, Fri May-07-10 11:27 AM
LOL, no wonder I can't do it
231401, You're a better man than me
Posted by Marauder21, Thu May-06-10 09:13 PM
I have all but given up even trying those bitches. Even with a stick I have trouble.
231420, really? I plat with the standard pad &.....
Posted by KnowOne, Fri May-07-10 06:09 AM
Balrog & Guiles ultras come out with ease. My fav is doing Guile's flip-kick & cancelling it into the super.

But I have been having trouble with double quater circle forward ultras. lol I can do them but they dont always come out on my 1st try.
231457, Yeah, I just never tried to play with charge characters
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Fri May-07-10 11:17 AM
I'd either play Zangief or Ryu.

Gief's is the easiest, imo.
231540, Got it easy with my pad
Posted by steelreserve40, Sat May-08-10 01:58 PM
For me it's more charge downback, wiggle it to df and back, just to forward instead of up forward, i hit with vega every time

his new ultra is nasty though, the slide kick hits low across the screen, doesn't do crazy damage but it's ended some fights for me

for being the lowest ranked fighter, people seem surprisingly uncertain how to deal with vega, i destroyed a guile once with him

Goes to show the genius balancing, when vega in good hands can hang with the sagats.

Xbox still getting repaired I'm hoping you doods don't blow past me while I'm patiently waiting.

If your on a sf4 adding spree, add me gt: hellbox9
235312, eh, i give up on that shit, I can only do the special moves with Guile
Posted by mtbatol, Thu Jun-10-10 12:45 AM
learned to time the sonic boom & flash kick.. but that charge shit is for them advanced special folks.... fuuuuuuuuuck daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
231402, I've barely had any time for this game
Posted by Marauder21, Thu May-06-10 09:15 PM
And it showed tonight, I was getting my ass whooped. But I actually put together a 3 match winning streak.

XBL heads, I should (HOPEFULLY) be on this weekend.
231411, Soon as I get my Ibuki game back, ....Ima see ya'll.

231415, I'm back in the lab
Posted by Mafamaticks, Fri May-07-10 01:48 AM
I think I'm gonna main Akuma. His demon flip mixups are lovely. His stamina ain't though. I eat way too many jump ins unless I'm expecting them so I'm working on beating jump ins on reaction. With Rog it was a quick down and fierce button or a medium punch button. With Akuma it's a SRK motion. I'm gonna be playing HDR to get my SRK/ down fierce game up.
231431, COME ON CLETUS!
Posted by jetblack, Fri May-07-10 08:38 AM
I mean GG yesterday
lol
231419, ? for those with LCD tv's
Posted by xangeluvr, Fri May-07-10 04:21 AM
do you experience lag? i need a smaller set for a separate room that i'm making into a game room and was wondering if the response time of lcd's throws you off. i always hated having to calibrate with music games and since fighting games don't have that luxury it seems like that could really screw up your game. a 2-5 ms lag could be death in SSFIV.
231423, response time varies from display to display
Posted by jetblack, Fri May-07-10 06:58 AM
the faster the better. it could also be packet loss it happens all the time to me, ask anyone who plays against or with me online.
231503, well yes this i know
Posted by xangeluvr, Fri May-07-10 11:29 PM
my question is how bad it actually affects your play.
231427, Dee Jay
Posted by Amon, Fri May-07-10 08:05 AM
My patience is running low with Dee Jay.

He doesn't seem to have much priority. His moves get stuffed a lot.
With the exception of his j.lp, c.mk and c. hk, his normals have very little use.
I'm almost ready to go back to Guile.

Maybe I need more rhythm?
I'll keep practicing.

231428, Great2k1 was killin me with his DeeJay...
Posted by Cam_eleon, Fri May-07-10 08:21 AM
It was like the second day the game was out too.
231450, he had the 'Bin Laden' copy (his words)
Posted by Dr Claw, Fri May-07-10 10:36 AM
but even so
that crossover nonsense
I'm gonna have to figure it out
LOL, I saw one of his replays a couple nights ago
231481, RE: Dee Jay
Posted by great1 2k6, Fri May-07-10 04:09 PM
you got to play dee jay alittle different than guile. I try to annoy the opponent until they come near me. score that untechable knockdown then cross up people for fraaaaaaaaaaaaaay with j.mk. his c.lp is godlike. After hitting someone with a cross-up try cr.lp,cr.lp, cr.mk for a untechable knockdown. Then rinse and repeat. also tick throw with cr.lp. for anti-air I use s.fp, lk upkicks or ex upkicks. If you can't tech throws well then dee jay says that you have no rhythm and you fraaaaaaaaaay.

btw I play this game waaaaaaaaaay too much. I already probably have 100 hours. feel free to ask me any dee jay questions.

here is a good dee jay tutorial:

231438, Ive embraced the power of the shamwow
Posted by BigReg, Fri May-07-10 09:24 AM
Ive messed around with Rose before (hell, I remember in Alpha only used her and Guy).

Ive been using mainly charge characters since I switched to a stick (guile/Holda/Boxer) for SF4, and I have been wanting to use more fireball types just to get the skills back.

But for super, me and her just clicked, I think Im gonna ride that train for the time being.

231439, I can't wait to start playing with sticks
Posted by L_O_Quent, Fri May-07-10 09:30 AM
it's been damn near 2 decades since I was using them for SFII but a lot of things don't feel right on the controller.

I just main E. Honda but I'm going to venture out and try a few other characters
231444, I played mainly E Honda in vanilla
Posted by BigReg, Fri May-07-10 10:02 AM
He's awesome. Only flaw was fireball types could play a good keepaway, but I figure it was only fair since if he could go through fireballs=GOAT.

That's why I laughed at your Sagat, story: fuck that dude. After you WORK (and that shit is work) to get in on that fucker, all it took was a well aimed Tiger Knee and you were back to square one.
231445, yeah I've been playing with him since '91
Posted by L_O_Quent, Fri May-07-10 10:09 AM
so everyone else feels weird to me and I like that I can pull off the Ocho easier with the PS3. Going through Fireballs is the truth and gets those fuckers upset which in turns brightens my day lol.

Do I have you on PSN? If not check the sig, your tara's brother right?
231447, xbox is 'krazen'
Posted by BigReg, Fri May-07-10 10:19 AM
PSN is 'krazenkills' (sucks, but it's the closest I could get to the xbox).

I got a copy a few days ago, but I haven't had a chance to play. The clouds clear by next week, and imma hop on.

Im aiming for BFNH and jetblack! Im bringing the pain!

Maybe I gotta just get used to it.
231464, Guile I can play pretty mean on the pad

Posted by Lach, Sat May-08-10 08:18 PM
This damn Tekken stick be sliding all over the table when I use it. It's kinda heavy but not heavy enough. Any of yall got them other 2 sticks? I'm thinking of getting the Marvel vs Capcom joint.
231560, RE: any of yall got the Madcatz TE stick or Marvel vs Capcom stick?
Posted by Eccentric, Sat May-08-10 09:08 PM
I got the Madcatz TE stick and the fight pad.

The Madcatz joint is sick. Great weight to it so its not sliding around at all. I tried it for about 2 weeks, but I've come to believe my hands are too small for the buttons on a stick. I can execute pretty well on the pad.

I'm probably going to sell the Madcatz stick.
231564, Would a different set of feet help?
Posted by spenzalii, Sun May-09-10 12:28 AM
Swap the feet and it may stop sliding as much. That said, if you do get that TE, get it dual modded. Just hit me up...
231567, I'm rockin the TE
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Sun May-09-10 06:02 AM
The whole thing is big enough where I can just put it on my lap instead of on a table. If you put it on a table, it won't go anywhere, either.

I have an SE stick too. That's a bit smaller so your hands can't really rest on it as well, but then again, I haven't used it enough to know if it slides around or not. Like spenz said, you probably could just put some different feet on the hori and be fine.
231572, that was funny as hell. I could hear you buffering the ultra

231624, maybe an hour after hooking it up, I have this to say about PS3:
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon May-10-10 09:14 AM
- integrated Ethernet AND wireless = GOOD!
- being able to use USB keyboards and controllers? = GOOD!
- not having to pay Geld to use online? = GOOD!
- being able to use my spare Bluetooth headset? = GOOD!

install base, certain exclusives, and that prohibitive price tag are the only reason I wasn't aboard earlier.

I'm diggin' this shit. Can't wait until my PS2 to PS3 controller adapter gets here. in the meantime I can play with the USB Saturn pad.

231652, I can play them OK with a stick but the issue is more of a 'SFIV' issue
Posted by Dr Claw, Mon May-10-10 01:06 PM
the goddamn Shoryuken shortcut is THE WORST THING EVER.
how many times have I wanted a simple Gadouken when I either get Koryuken (which is OK w/Dan since I'm usually in their face anyway) or worse... SUPER. I never use it with Dan, barely with Ryu or Ken. Let's not talk about what happens w/ultras.

for some reason, I can't play 360 characters on a stick. I can get jump in 720s, but standing 360s keep screwing me up something awful. Or it might just be Hakan since he has other joystick motion moves.

I'm this close to switching out the restrictor plate to the octagon but I feel I need to learn how to play this game on the square gate.

Gief will still traditionally have issues w/ ranging characters (and keep-out whores like Seth, or straight up bitch-shit like Weasel's kunai shenanigans), but the fact that I can basically grab 'em from Gadouken range with a 360 negates that.

compare that to Hakan. god damn, he is looking like the "Dan" of grapple characters. Not because of his jokes, and "unique" abilities... but his 360+P has NO range. like, you basically gotta be sniffing someone's cologne just to grab 'em. his 360+K is better but it can be ducked.

even off brands like Birdie and Sodom were better than that. cmon.

is it me or is his Green hand "SNK"-ing (read: interrupting) people outta specials/supers and ultras beyond projectiles more often?

I dunno. Gief might be weakened but he is still Gief. the "Gouki" of grapplers.

Having your rank change individually with each player is pretty cool, but means much more work if you're into the whole 100% completion thing. The replays are a nice touch. You can watch to see where you're fucking up and try to make some changes there. The netcode seems a little better this go round. I haven't had a dropped game yet, and only a few games with noticeable lag or slowdown.

I do notice there have been a LOOOOT of annoying ass Ryu fighters as of late, more so than Ken players from SFIV.

how many BP/PP you need to move to another letter grade (or even plus) any clue?

The replays would be 1000% percent better if you could fast forward & rewind

>how many BP/PP you need to move to another letter grade (or

options > character data

There's an online ranking section that will show you your current BP for the character you are viewing in addition to how many you need to level.

It's Player Data, Player Records, then Character Records.
Switch to the Ranked Match Progress screen after you select a character and you will see a stat titled Next Rank Up.

Posted by bearfield, Tue May-11-10 10:07 AM
What's with certain character challenges that are simply a couple of button presses (i.e. Makoto's -> Stand L punch -> Stand M punch)? Is it a timing thing? They're not target combos and I don't think they're cancels... Why can't I clear these? Am I missing something here?
231736, links.
Posted by bfnh, Tue May-11-10 10:27 AM
you only have 1 or 2 frames to make those moves connect. they can be pretty difficult. much like the supers, the point is to show you what is possible. the link combos are there to show you what can be done.

you can't just mash and cancel one move w/the next like a target or cancel, you've got to wait for the move to end and then hit the next move during your opponents hitstun.

if not for the Shoryuken shortcut, anything involving Hadouken motion would be easier.

Also I decided to start playing ranked matches with makoto and she kind of sucks (read: I kind of suck) against space contollers like the shotos and grabbers like gief, and that's all I saw last night (with a few juris mixed in)

Been playing with Abel, here's some help:

Tornado Throw has priority over any normal throw, so if you're not playing with a grappler get out of there.

Ex tornado throw I believe has priority over normal moves and throws so, get out of there.

His change of direction chain has to be blocked standing. (the one that combos) If you are blocking low for the last 2 hits you will still get thrown.

Finally, the Breathless ultra is probably the best ultra on the game. It is unblockable, quick, travels instantly almost full screen, you can hold the button to delay it, you can cancel it, and it has one hit armor. It also takes about half life. You shouldn't jump at an Abel with ultra unless you cross him up, and don't miss a special move close to him or you're toast. Best to try to bait it out by jumping repeatedly from a distance.

Just started playing with him in the last two weeks for all the above reasons.
232681, this makes it seem worse
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon May-17-10 05:43 PM

232769, RE: this makes it seem worse
Posted by Eccentric, Tue May-18-10 11:26 AM
Who do you play with?

Basically, you just don't want to get into a throwing match with a good Abel and if you get him on the ground, feel free to attack him because he doesn't have a good reversal. If he rolls you can either throw him or hit him low during the roll.

I play with Chun alot also and if you get Abel on the ground, you can pretty much mix him up all you want. (your average Abel) I've played some though that I couldn't get close to because they seemed to roll at just the right time.
232893, E. Honda, I just realized I didn't mention that

You should probably EX sumo smash when you think he's gonna grab if you have charge. The TT won't grab you out of the air.

You can also neutral jump out of it, but if Abel thinks you are doing that he can Falling Sky you so mix it up.

Also, Breathless Ultra has one hit armor. So if you see someone activate it you can headbutt them out of it since its armor break. Just makes sure you do a fierce headbutt because if you do a jab or medium and it doesn't get there he can just delay the ultra until you come out of it and kill you then.
232746, Who are you playing with?
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue May-18-10 07:37 AM
General strat wise, you can throw him or sweep him in the middle of his roll. If you try towards the end of his throw animation, you'll most likely get thrown so time it right.

He doesn't have a reliable reversal on wake up besides rolling out of trouble, so if you get a knockdown, jump in with a meaty attack. He'll be forced to block or roll out of there. As soon as he starts rolling out of trouble every time you can expect it and punish him for it.

HIs block string mixups are tricky as hell. that step kick will leave you in a lot of block stun and it leaves you and abel neutral on frames. If you see that kick he'll most likely go for the throw to see how you react to it. Depending on how you react to the first throw, the Abel player will adjust accordingly. Neutral jump and come down with a combo.

jumping out of strings isn't as reliable as back dashing. Don't become too predictable with the back dashes though, as Abel can sense a back dash and sweep
232751, He's a huge pain but most people don't use/abuse him right
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Tue May-18-10 09:16 AM

Started messing with her this weekend. I'm digging her keep-away game + her dumb quick dash. Her ex soul throw beats most air attacks and she can slide under super/ultra fireballs. So useful on wakeup...

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/21/super-street-fighter-iv-getting-balance-fixes-along-with-dlc-nex/

According to Andriasang's translation of a post on Capcom's Japanese blog, the developer is planning to roll out a patch for Super Street Fighter IV on June 15 -- the same day as the release of the game's Tournament Mode DLC -- which will remove a few exploits and address some balancing issues players have discovered since the title's launch. For the full list of (highly technical) changes included in the update, just click past the jump.

The patch remedies a few sizable issues, such as the unblockable Ultra exploit -- however, it doesn't return E. Honda's "Thousand-Hand Bitch Slap" maneuver to its original, unbeatable glory. Hopefully that particular fix will come in a later update.

-Fei Long's infinite combo loop against Juri will be removed.
-Unblockable Ultras will be fixed. This is where you throw a fireball and the Ultra flash made it so your opponent could not block.
-Guy will no longer be able to be thrown while he's crouching and in hit stun animation. A bug made it possible to combo throw moves while he was in this state.
-Ibuki's invincibility window on wake up -- under certain circumstances -- was too long, this will be fixed.
-The 2nd hit of Ibuki's Spinning Kicks missing Chun-Li will be fixed.
-Counter hit damage on M. Bison's (Dictator) Ultra 2 was too low.
-Sagat's Angry Charge was not working properly in some instances (EX-Tiger Uppercut doesn't get damage upgrade in some cases).
233518, just once I'd like to see these updates say 'remove shortcuts'
Posted by Dr Claw, Sun May-23-10 06:13 AM
I looked up on SRK why they even exist... there is no benefit to doing unnatural, undocumented replacements for other moves. All it does is add more complexity where there should be none. This is Street Fighter, not Tekken -- I shouldn't be putting in neutrals in the middle of standard "Hadouken" inputs.
233561, I'd fix Chun I's Ultra I
Posted by spenzalii, Sun May-23-10 04:46 PM
An ultra is no good if you only get 1 or 2 hit soutof it in most situations (unless you trap them in a corner. In open space, it's a crapshoot). Her super seems to work fine, as it draws her toward the opponent while it connects, but you really need to use her super gauge for her EX moved more than anything, so that's not too much help there.

233599, I'm fine with all of these updates

233603, c to shining c is a bitch.
Posted by bfnh, Mon May-24-10 08:29 AM
decided i was gonna pick up Abel as an alt. incorporating f+MK into my game is such a different mechanic than anyone else i've ever used.

after pumping him to c i decided i might as well get that c to shining c trophy. however, to get to C, you need 1000 BP. you never lose BP until you reach C, which is good. the least you can get from a match (when you are ranked D, D+) is 50BP although i've been able to get 70+ from some matchups. so, you'll need ~20 wins with each character to get them up to the C level. so, we're talking 20 wins * 35 characters = 700 matches? who the hell thought that was a good idea?

233608, You can unlock those without actually fighting though
Posted by Marauder21, Mon May-24-10 09:48 AM
If you go to Vs mode, just pick a character and everything normal, then quit as soon as the fight starts. Keep doing this over and over and you'll get all of a character's taunts/colors.

It's really tedious and I only did it once, but I might do it for some of the fighters I really don't like using.
233636, yeah, just like selecting someone 20 times... = PB&J

I used him for probably the first 2-3 weeks after the game came out and have almost 4000 battle points with him. He really sucks in some matchups and he whiffs alot of his moves which is very annoying.

Both of his target combos don't hit crouchers which is a big problem and his crossup spacing is iffy.

What I will say is that he is a ton of fun to play with. However, when you fight a good Honda, Bison, Balrog, or Blanka, good luck to you.

got adon up to B class and went back to using the rest of the cast. i still wish he had that extra 50 hp, but i can see how that might make him a bit "too" good. plus, i wouldn't be as cautious w/him as i am now. his standing roundhouse & crouching strong are just monstrous. not having them when i play w/other characters really throws my game off.

236359, Chun LI Advice
Posted by Mafamaticks, Sun Jun-20-10 06:51 PM
Seen some folks hate playing Chun. I did at once. It's a lot easier for me now so I'm not mad anymore.

She's like a quicker, more mobile Guile. She can press the offense better than Guile can because of her pokes and she's almost as good at zoning because of her numerous anti air options. But once you get her on her back you can get that damage right back if not more.

You can safe jump the shit out of Chun. If you time it right It beats all her options on wakeup (jumping straight up, EX Bird, regular bird etc.) except back dash, and even then you can OS a sweep in so even if she tries to back dash she'll end up on her back again. (Here's looking at you Jetblack lol) All she can do is block if you time it right with an OS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch#!v=9Xf1yHejfIE

Jetblack handed me tons of Ls at first. Until that right there up above lol

That flip kick (Hazanshu?) can be focused as well as a lot of her pokes.

If a Chun tries the other flip kick on your wakeup (the down forward HK one) and it's timed right ain't nothing you can do except block or teleport if you have it. And even then it's risky.

Anti air all of her jump ins if you can. They are floaty as shit. If you don't it's a mixup. I've seen some Chuns empty jump in baiting a throw tech from me and Hazanshu, lk, EX legs, Ultra. All from a fucking throw tech.

Posted by Mafamaticks, Sun Jul-11-10 04:03 PM
even a toned down, slightly nerfed Gouki is beastly. He was godlike in vanilla. But in Super that fucking Rufus matchup is the worst. It's a bad match up for Gouki if rufus has ultra 2. As Gouki you spend most of the match zoning with fireballs or baiting out his EX meter. When he has ultra 2, fireballs or jumping from half screen will get you killed. Not to mention that fucking EX Jesus kick once he gets meter. and he's a fucking tank. he can risk doing stupid shit as long as he can guess right twice. Gouki does anything stupid half of his life is gone.

Fuck rufus lol

238033, yep, I believe that's the only thing that keeps him from being 'banned'
Posted by Dr Claw, Tue Jul-13-10 02:35 PM
>Gouki does anything stupid half of his life is gone.

Rufus is still like the most annoying character in the game... largely because as you said, he can afford to be stupid.

I don't even know if Sagat has that option, but to be top dog he has to be (he still isn't as popular in tourneys though, I'm thinking it's because people are either trying not to be "banned" or the reason he's there is because he's just too complicated a character to wholly wield that power).

Rufus has the most free ultra setups in the game. No EX meter needed. I think Ryu has some meter-free ultra set up but those are mostly situation... it's not like FADC where, you have to make sure you don't get caught in a SRK string at all.

if Gouki didn't take "Jouki" (JOKEY) damage... he'd just be ... I don't even want to imagine it.

he still probably couldn't get out of that Rufus match-up on U2 unless he was super crafty, though.
237874, I don't know if it's 'anti-pad' per se

You have a better feel if someone honed their skills at an arcade (old school style) or at home based on pad play. You have beatlyplayers either way, but the technique is very different from a stick player than a pad player
238035, I think so as well

though, you know, it's gotten to the point that there are people who try to offer the scientific reasoning as to why it's an easier (read: better) run on the stick.

which mostly, I agree with -- the access to so many buttons (esp. in SFIV) on a flat set up is crucial. though I'm in the stage where I still get overly nervous doing something like a FADC routine.

on pad, I've gotten to the point (w/Dan) where KRK, if see I have meter means FADC shenanigans. I'm trying to wean off that though.
238287, Which is easier is subjective, I think
Posted by spenzalii, Thu Jul-15-10 06:00 PM
That said, if you are an OG, you cut your teeth on sticks. Heavy ass, clicky sticks if you were in the US. Like most people, I've played on pads since SNES/Genesis days. Once the arcade crash came, there really wasn't a choice. In those 15+ years I got good on a pad, especially with shotos, since I never used them in the arcade. But charge characters were always ALWAYS better for me on a stick.

I can still go back and forth between the two, but given my druthers I'd go with a stick. Considering I've built 4 and have another 3 projects waiting in the wings, I'd say it's easy to see where I lean on this.
238496, yeah. When I was at the tourney a few weeks back

>But charge characters were always ALWAYS better for me on a stick.

and they still are, IMO
now there are some crafty thing the Rog/Boxer heads do to get the "Butt Washer" (aka The Bidet aka the Buffalo Head Butt) to go into either the super or the ultra that I would have never thought until I read it somewhere (charge DB, then UB + Punch)

I should've been on there. I'm on now. I'm better (Gouken) than I have been, but I'm still not good. And I still find myself losing waaaaaaay too much..especially to lame late-round shenanigans. I played one Ken that made me feel like the character was broken. It was insane. I hate Cammy and Chun-Li enough that I damn near wanna cancel out when I see either one. Cammy always gives me fits and she seems soooo hard to punish. And I haven't won a round agains a Chun-Li ever. Partly because I'm not good and I don't know her. It just seems like she has a slew of wild crossup, lag-friendly, and priority-insane moves and folks are all over them.

My 8 year old has a thing where everyone has to be upstairs when he goes to bed so he can feel safe. I'm in the basement with the wife who's going on about my day and my son marches downstairs and tells us we all need to get some sleep and I can play the game tomorrow since, in his words, I've had a long day and I'm tired and need some rest.

Those WERE some good fights..even the 75% where ya'll just owned me. You cats are gonna make me better EVENTUALLY so I'm with it. Mic or no mic, I just hope Ecentric could hear me and Hotep clownin' the whole time.

Hotep is just too cold with the charge characters. The first time he chased that jab sonic boom, I knew I was about to learn some things since I tend to stay away from most of the charge characters. And Dee-Jay is a beast once he gets on the offensive.

And you Eccentric...man, I can't do anything with Chun when its lame folks playing her, so I wanted to disconnect when Hotep told me Chun was one of your mains. Your Abel was straight harsh too.

Both of ya'll had cool Guys. And overall, ya'll are just sharp with the boom-bap combos with all of your characters.

And I promise to come up with another character beside Gouken, who is my SF4 obsession at the moment (looking at Makoto cuz I don't think I can handle Boxer Balrog). Outside of my need to throw random Ultras, I also get caught trying to use his ultra like I'd use Ken's 'Vertical Uppercut' from SF3. AND I'm too sloppy still to be the type of bully Gouken allows. I have my moments, but I gotta make that the norm. Still working.

Thanks man. I've been playing Chun since the first street fighter, but I'm getting tired of her. I'm on a mean streak with her in ranked, got her up to a B finally last night.

I like Abel, but its easy to bully him once you knock him down.

>Both of ya'll had cool Guys. And overall, ya'll are just sharp

Guy is cool man. I usually lose against good players with him, but I rarely lose to scrubs. I think I gave up on him to early when the game came out. he's just much more fun to play with than everyone else.

Your Gouken is good man, keep at it. I love playing him with Chun though, because he can't do much of anything when she has Ultra I. Have you tried to use Gouken's second ultra? It juggles after it hits and I've heard its pretty good.

You don't want Makoto man. lol

238684, can we talk taking your game to the next level?
Posted by steelreserve40, Thu Jul-22-10 01:22 PM
having gotten the ssf4 bug really hard lately (was running hard with it for a while, took a break but evo footage got me hype), I was wondering if we could chop it up on how to get better.

I got my mains (sagat, chun li, vega) all up to C, and I'm sad to say I've been losing considerably more than I've been winning, and want to figure out how to get my game to the next level, and I'd love to know any of your thoughts on any breakthru strategies/gameplay philosophies you might have successfully implemented.

here's some random thoughts and questions:

- I've realized more and more that good matches are more like chess. the key decision for success is getting someone to commit to an attack you can successfully counter, and/or committing to an attack that will not be countered. when i go full out offense, I find 99% of the time the guy is just blocking and counter attacking. being patient, and feeling out what kind of player you are playing is key.

- that being said, if your opponent is going balls out offense, sit back and let him counter. once he unsuccessfully attempts his go to lead in, and his confidence is shattered, mix it up.

those are a few thoughts I had, now onto the questions:

- i have trouble getting inside on turtle char (i.e. guile) and keep-away characters (got owned by a good dhaslim last night his jumping fierce p annhilated me). thoughts on how to deal with them?

- i still havent implemented much focus attacks/focus attack canceling in my game. i feel like fac is more used for extending big combos. I have a tough time effectively using focus attacks, advice for how to effectively use them?

- sometimes i feel like I'm still an extension of my snes days, relying on uppercuts for anti-airs, fireballs, and sticking to jumping fierce/roundhouses. this may sound dumb, how do you most effectively use your light and medium attacks in your gameplan?

answer my questions, share your thoughts, or add your own questions.

238685, I can speak to this

and I use Dan who is basically good for not much other than "old school Street Fighter" which is why I liked him in the first place.

I think if you use a character that has good normals (your mains of Ryu, Chun and Sagat have excellent normals), you should go into training mode or play the CPU to get a good idea of how they work against opponents -- how long they take to go out and all of that.

bringing it back to Dan, his normals SUCK. so if I want anti-air I have to KRK or hope the opponent is close enough to be hit with the standing HK or close standing MK.

I know exactly what you mean w/"SNES" days w/the fierce/roundhouse. that button layout on the controller had people biased toward the HP/HK so much. Took getting on a Saturn for me to finally get away with that.

I used to dabble in SFIII (mostly 3rd Strike) which is why Makoto is my #2 character used in this game. With that in mind, I use the FA sort of like parries were used in that game. I often cancel the FA with a dash... and if someone is hitting me during it, it works like parries did in that game. But unlike parries, you have to dash out for the effect. you can only absorb a single hit, too.

FADC combos are pretty demanding for the average player, because of the input window and how you have to jump across the controller. I would hit training mode as much as you can to play them.
238688, thanks doc!

I can only give you in depth as Akuma because I play him. But I can give you general stuff.

Turtle Guile is all about positioning and patience. You ever see old school high level Guile vs. Ryu matches? They chuck fireballs and sonic booms all day not for damage, but for the best screen position. Turtle guile wants you to get in HIS position to get his damage. Don't fall for it. Just keep cutting off the screen and eventually he'll have nowhere to run. Position is just as important as damage. Cross ups give Guile trouble so if you get the knockdown, cross him up to put pressure on him. If you back him up to the corner try to keep him there because his only "escape" is Flash kick FADC into backdash. A wrong flash kick will have him lose a ton of health.

Dhalsim is the same. His teleport isn't all that good because he can only go right behind you or back into a corner. A bad teleport will get him hurt bad since he doesn't have a lot of life to begin with. His jumping fierce can be uppercutted if you play sagat. You can focus through his heavy limbs. Focusing through fireballs isn't recommended because he'll just tag you with his limbs, making you eat the damage. Whatever ground you gain, try your best to keep it. If you get the knockdown, safe jump in and start your pressure. He doesn't have a reliable wake up reversal and teleport is dangerous.

Don't be afraid of the timer. If goes down to the wire it does. Fuck it. Better that way than to foolishly run into their range.

>
>- i still havent implemented much focus attacks/focus attack
>canceling in my game. i feel like fac is more used for
>extending big combos. I have a tough time effectively using

There are so many different usages for focus attacks. Here a some that come to me off the top.

Say you have a ryu that likes to abuse his sweep. Get inside his sweep range and start to focus. If he sweeps you absorb it and get the crumple. If he doesn't do anything you can either dash back or forward.

You have an opponent blocking your blockstring of cr. lp, cr. lp, cr. lp. From there you can start your focus attack. If they counter poke, you absorb it and get a crumple. If they don't you can release it and the opponent blocks it, putting more pressure on them with the guessing game of throw, block, uppercut.

Let's say you have a guy knocked down. charge up a focus on his wake up. When he wakes up, backdash. If your opponent is reversal happy, he'll be open to punish. If he doesn't he'll eat an unblockable focus attack.

The lights and mediums depend on the character. You have to know your normals. by this I mean you have to know:

The range of each normal
The speed of each normal
Can the normal be linked or cancelled
How much advantage you get on hit/block
The range and speed of your opponents normals

Abel's standing light kick is a good poke because it has good priority and it can stuff some moves allowing abel to get in quicker. but it's not cancelable or linkable. Chun's crouching light kick sets up big punishes of mistakes, but it's too short to be a poke. Here's an example.

Let's say you block Balrog's improperly spaced level 2 turn around punch. If you try to sweep him, Balrog has enough time to block. However, if you do 2 crouching light kicks into EX legs into Ultra 2, you got a nice amount of damage off of a mistake. 2 light kicks got you a shit ton of damage.

In abel's case, you're playing a cr. mk happy ryu. You get just within his cr. Mk to fireball range and stick out a standing light kick. You get the counter hit and get extra frame advantage allowing you to close the distance to effectively apply Abels f + mk mixup game (which is godlike btw).

Once you understand the normal you'll know how and when to use them. Not to mention hit confirming combos. Try playing the computer using only normal attacks. You'll get the hang of them in no time. Especially with Chun. her normals are fucking great.

realizing how much depth and strategy is available in 2d fighters, i dunno if ill ever be on an fps again

checking out the forums, I'm gonna see if theres anyone in the area I can get together with and play with consistantly.

also gonna buy the madcatz te fightstick, I'm sick of not getting out chun li's ultra 2 because the damn left bumper on the fightpad is too hard to reach.
238731, The funny thing was, I'm the other way around...

I had no problem with the Ultra II on a (PS3) pad, but Ultra I was almost impossible for me. Not, I can snap off Ultra I with the stick, but need a bit more practice to get Ultra II out on the stick.

If you DO get a TE, make sure to get the 360 version. That way, if you decide to dual mod it later it's much easier than going from a PS3 version (which is still doable, but not as easy).
238755, just copped today!!! sensitive buttons, damn
Posted by steelreserve40, Fri Jul-23-10 02:53 PM
terrible trip, the local gamestop said they had it in stock but it was the ps3, had to drive in and out of northern VA which = sitting in traffic for hours.

thing i really noticed, i wasn't getting the specials out, the TE stick's buttons are MUCH more sensitive than the gamepads, meaning I was pressing the button too early for the special.

this will take some getting used to, but I'm excited to own a stick! bit pricey but shoot, i havent touched another game in 2 months. Plus, this should be my go to fight stick for every 2d fighter ever.

going to a small local tourney tonite just to get out the house and actually play with some people, i wanna learn more and who knows how I'll do! if i lose, hopefully ill be able to control my temper much better than I do when I lose over xbl.
238759, NoVa? You local(ish)?
Posted by spenzalii, Fri Jul-23-10 03:24 PM
Yes, Sanwa buttons are quite sensitive, but once you get used to them people swear by them. You could swap for some seimitsu buttons if you just can't get used to them. If you head to the abovementioned SRK forums there's a metric crapton of info you can get on sticks, gates, buttons, art mods, dual mods, etc. I spend more time on that site than a little bit.

I'm in PG County, so if you ever think about using that stick on PS3 and 360 but aren't handy with the soldering iron, we can work something out.
238788, ha, I'll be ok, just will take practice i guess
Posted by steelreserve40, Sat Jul-24-10 01:30 AM
its just frustrating when i could stuff any attack in an instant with a tiger uppercut, and right now i just wiff with a crouch HP. I'm gonna dedicate some time every day in the training just to get the joystick feel (like doing a hadoken without accidentally jumping) and the button presses.

yeah man, I'm just down the road in hoodbridge. I think ill be ok with my fightstick for now, but if you ever have a crew over to play, hit me up, I'm always down for some beers and video games, ill even bring a 12'er of budweiser, cans of course.

I play Chun on a Pad and put all three punches on Fierce Punch. For normals you still get Fierce punches even with this configuration. Most chun's rarely use fierce kikokens, so that is pretty much all you lose. (you'll get ex kikokens instead of Fierce)

I swear when I do, I never miss a 360, Gadouken, or whatever I'm trying to do

I play Chun so I can offer some insight with her, or at least the way I play her.

>- i have trouble getting inside on turtle char (i.e. guile)
>and keep-away characters (got owned by a good dhaslim last
>night his jumping fierce p annhilated me). thoughts on how to
>deal with them?

The tips you got earlier on Guile are spot on. I'll tell you how I play him and I've got a pretty high win percentage against him.

1) Don't jump towards him on Sonic Booms. His throw has priority over everything, or at least that's been my experience. If you jump straight up over them, alot of Guile's either follow it in or jump towards you for the throw and you can get a neutral jump fierce combo. If he follows them all the time you can focus through them or hasanshu over them. Just don't jump towards if he knows what he's doing, that what they want you to do.

2) Be patient. Hold your ground, let him back himself into a corner. All you really need is to get in on Guile once to take a huge chunk. You can cross him up all day or safe jump and make him flip kick.

3) Don't use ultra 1. Recovery on sonic boom is too fast, you'll miss.

For Dhalsim, focus through the jumping fierce or follow a kikoken to get in. Once you're in he's got no options on wake up outside of teleport or block. Same strategy as Guile once you're in.

Glad you're not asking about Blanka because that's my toughest matchup with Chun.

>
>- i still havent implemented much focus attacks/focus attack

With Sagat, you need fadc to get easy ultras and for safe tiger uppercuts.

Chuns FA leaves her with a frame advantage so even if your opponent blocks it, you can dash in and throw or lk lk ex legs. Good mix up.

Agree with the other poster, it just depends on the character and the matchup.

Chuns best pokes are hk, mp, hp, and crouching mp. Don't think I've ever used standing lk with her. She crosses up with lk, and df hk.

I use standing lp on occasion but not that much. (to stop headbutt blanka ball spamming)

I play abel also and I use jumping mk almost exclusively, poke with standing lk and forward mk.

Which normals you use depends completely on the character, so just don't get in the habit of thinking its a one size fits all thing.

238752, you guys see the new arcade screenshot? (2 empty slots for new char.)
Posted by Nabs, Fri Jul-23-10 02:25 PM
empty, but it shows that they are adding people for sure. hopefully announced tomorrow @ ono's conference.

http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/23/super_sfiv_character_slots/images/2132420805/

there are two more weekends of arcade testing, so maybe they'll add more spots for new characters. hopefully.

i hope they add elena and don't screw it up.
238761, RE: you guys see the new arcade screenshot? (2 empty slots for new char.)

The rumor is 7 additional characters including Alex and Rolento.
238763, the rumor was most likely false
Posted by Nabs, Fri Jul-23-10 04:17 PM
but at least we know new characters are going to happen. i want to see what they do with the pc version. they might fuck with pc users further by forcing them to pay $40 and then $15 for the extra characters =\ and we'll still buy it.

238836, I had a draw yesterday online
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Sat Jul-24-10 07:32 PM
It was funny as hell. No music or anything, just a screen saying both players lost. I stared at the screen for a good 3 minutes, then got a message from the person I played saying he just stared at the screen for a while, too.

It gave me -6 points and the other guy +6.
238838, tf?

238870, I'm thinking about buying the costumes
Posted by L_O_Quent, Sun Jul-25-10 09:19 AM
sadly that makes me feel like an idiot for even thinking about it.

238880, Well, the new stick works. Sorta...
Posted by spenzalii, Sun Jul-25-10 12:58 PM
It functions, so I know my soldering worked corrcety. I had to go back and fix the start and L2 buttons, but a few minutes with some desoldering braid and I was good to go. I need some assistance with the lighting and have to wait for the plexiglass man to get back from Comic-Con to get the art done, but the stick should be done and ready for the reveal soon. Then I can get on L_O's stick in full force. BTW, I made a change in the wood stock on L_O's case, which will take a little longer and cost slightly more, but will lok MUCH nicer...
238881, I'm looking forward to these sticks
Posted by L_O_Quent, Sun Jul-25-10 01:19 PM
They'll be on your blog right? It'll be hella fun to watch them getting built.
238898, Yeah. The first one is up, finishing the write up on the second
Posted by spenzalii, Sun Jul-25-10 08:24 PM
Then will work on the third. Not even sure I'll do one for the current one since I didn't do as much hands on work. Yours will have a work log though
238891, I stopped bullshitting and started fucking w/ Abel
Posted by Mafamaticks, Sun Jul-25-10 05:36 PM
This nigga is gangsta. Second to only Cody's gangsta. I've just been in training practicing punishes, resets and his BnBs. He does hella damage and he gets tons of options after landing a blocked or a connected step kick.
238892, His ultra eats HALF of your life
Posted by jetblack, Sun Jul-25-10 05:43 PM
239167, Abel is really good BUT
Posted by Eccentric, Wed Jul-28-10 02:06 PM
Getting bum rushed after a knockdown without a reversal can get tiresome.

Also, the options after a step kick are great, but all of the links after it are extremely difficult, especially online. So unless you can do 1 frame links consistently, I would avoid using alot against someone with a good reversal, as you will eat it more often than not.

It is too much fun to play the crouching HP, roll mixup/reset game.
238900, Three of four lights red = doom I assume?

>For LO. New SSF4 posts go here.

>Let's go.

if so, I think this is #5 (give or take an XBox) and its been a while since the last one (cuz I went the better part of 6 months to a year without regular play) so I have no warranty. Soooooo...I'm looking at:

- flat out buying another xbox..250 GB, quiet and cheap-looking joint.

OR

- buying some games (SSF4, NG2, the wack new tecmo bowl that I was just trying to play before Entourage) for my God of War III-inspired PS3 and calling it done with Microsoft.

Jimaveli: I know which one is cheaper, but...
238901, come get into the fighting on PS3

239003, man, this stick is sick!!! perfected a guy w/ cancel combos too
Posted by steelreserve40, Mon Jul-26-10 10:06 PM
the srk forums are seriously a sf encyclopedia, was having the worst time cancelling crouching mp/mk into TU/TK w/ sagat, got a pointer on execution and i crank em out, perfected someone with it too!

getting a handle on the stick, everyone says its about practice, so im doing 20 reps per special/ultra/combo on each side before and after i play, i can whip out tiger uppercuts way fast now.

another thing really helpful to developing sounder fundamentals, got advice on the srk forums, really helpful stuff, check out my post:

239016, good shit
Posted by Mafamaticks, Tue Jul-27-10 06:22 AM
as sagat, make sure you learn hit confirm combos such as:

Jump in, cr. lk, cr. lk, cr. lp into tiger upper or tiger shot

This way when you jump in with sagat's jumping mp elbow, you know whether to finish the combo or not
239022, yep, been working on that one, the timings a bitch tho
Posted by steelreserve40, Tue Jul-27-10 08:40 AM
tried that one, links take some practice to get wired though, killer instinct this isn't.

239018, I'm looking forward to my sticks
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Jul-27-10 06:39 AM
dual system sticks too? It's going to change the way I play.
239025, Plural? I thought it was just the one dual mod

http://shoryuken.com/f177/dual-wireless-stick-building-noobies-worklog-245495/

This documents all the work that went into that MvC2 stick I made for a buddy (and gives L_O an idea of what I'll have to go thru for his stick). Have a look, have a laugh, and enjoy. Eventually I'll get the Guile stick worklog up, and will chronicle L_O's stick as soon as the case is finished. I don't think he's going to get lights
239133, sick and I am amped!

Posted by spenzalii, Wed Jul-28-10 08:14 AM
I put my first build up on the blog (spenzalii.blogspot.com) a while ago, and just got finished with the writeup for this one. It was much more involved than the first, and I git so busy at home and at work that I never got the chance to finish before now.
239187, Bringing my Abel out in about a week
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed Jul-28-10 05:41 PM

239192, Hands down the best/cheapest ultra in the game
Posted by Mafamaticks, Wed Jul-28-10 07:43 PM
it's a raging demon but with faster speed, longer range and armor. And you can cancel it. I don't really use it because I like to combo into my ultra.
239211, Time for a part 3 post (350 should be the limit)
Posted by L_O_Quent, Thu Jul-29-10 07:57 AM
