F.A.Q.
Q: What is this game about?
A: A retired outlaw named John Marston who is given an ultimatum by the proto-FBI: Track down your former gang or your family will suffer.

Q: When is it set?
A: The game is set later than most westerns, in 1911.

Q: Why is it set so late in the Wild West?

A: This is a unique time period where the Wild West was dying, a theme that as far as I know has never been done in a video game. Most videogames are set in the 1860s or 70s, where many famous Spaghetti Westerns are set. As an added bonus, it lets Rockstar include a wide variety of weaponry that would otherwise be anachronistic.

Q: I never played Red Dead Revolver, can I understand this?
A: The game has very little in common with Red Dead Revolver. The Dead-Eye targetting system is present, and John
Marston has similar facial scars to Red Harlow, but other than that theres no link.

Q: Who's making it?
A: Rockstar San Diego, who finished the first one, with the help of some key people who worked on the GTA series.


Q: Whats the gameplay like?

A: The gameplay utilizes many GTA standbys that are very familiar. The player has the freedom to go anywhere s/he pleases and is presented with a few options for travel including horseback, stagecoach and train. Story progression is done by completing missions, which are activated by going to their location. Things that separate it from GTA include the presence of RPG elements like morality, an inventory and a focus on exploration and interactively with the NPCs.

Q: How big is the in-game world?

A: The gameworld has been reported to be two times the size of San Andreas. San Andreas was about 14 square miles, so Red Dead should be around 28. It is split into three distinct regions, each one bigger than Liberty City.

Q: Can you customize Marston in any way?
A: As you play you can unlock different clothing (outfits) which can be worn for comestic effect as well as for a gameplay effect. There are 15 of these outfits available and they can be bought, unlocked via completing challenges or recieved during story progression. There is also a 16th outfit, the Deadly Assassin Outfit, which is only available to players who preorder the game from Gamestop. Alongside these outfits there are other, smaller options as well. Bandoliers (ammo belts) and bandanas can be worn for gameplay bonuses. There are also instances where more substantial clothing has been added or removed from Marston's outfit. A duster coat, a headband (replacing his hat) and a poncho have been seen on a preset outfit, but the exact mechanics of this remain to be seen.


Q: What kind of weapons are there?

A: There is a very large selection of weapons. Because the game is not set in the modern day the variety of weapons is mostly limited to handguns, rifles, shotguns, melee weapons and thrown weapons. To compensate for this there is a wide variety of each available, with 8 different handguns (both revolvers and semi-automatic pistols), 10
different rifles and 4 different shotguns known as of this date. There are also a variety of melee and thrown weapons including knives, lasso, throwing knives, dynamite and fire bottles. For comparison, GTA IV, including expansion packs, has a total of 27 weapons compared to RDR's currently known 32.

Q: Semi-automatics? In the Wild West? GTFO.
A: Remember, this is a game about the death of the Wild West. Revolvers are falling out of favour compared to semi-auto pistols, which are carried by government agents. If their presence offends you that much just don't use them.


Q: How long is the story supposed to last?
A: The game has fewer missions than GTA IV but the missions are longer, so it should be around the same play time.

Q: Will there be moral choices?
A: Outside of the story? All the time. Its a major feature of the free-roam. Within the story? Very little if any.

Q: What makes this different from Red Dead Revolver, GUN or the Call of Juarez games?
A: Well for starters Red Dead Revolver and Call of Juarez aren't sandbox games. So thats a big thing right there. And the distinction between it and Gun is that GUN is very small and empty and Red Dead is very large and lively. Revolver, Call of Juarez and GUN are also based in a different time frame than RDR is.

Q: What makes this different from Grand Theft Auto?
A: The setting, obviously, but also the gameplay. Red Dead features a morality scale that tracks your actions and behaviour and adjusts the NPC's behaviour to suit. So while in GTA you're always the bad guy, in Red
Dead you can go either way.

Q: Whats the multiplayer like?
A: The multiplayer is very comprehensive with both a free-roam mode and a variety of competitive modes. The biggest feature is the ability to form a posse with other players in free-roam and be able to work as a group to complete objectives. Q: Can we kill kids?
A: Highly highly highly doubt it.

Q: Is Bigfoot in it?

*** You can converse with NPCs yourself
* NPCs can hold grudges. A man you beat up in the saloon may come back later with a gun.
* NPC houses can be broken into and robbed
** NPCs store possessions in boxes and trunks in their houses.
* NPC towns can be wiped out and made into ghost towns
** Ghost towns will revive in 2-3 in-game days
* In the wilderness rarely a minute passes without seeing some indication of an NPC
** NPCs play an important part of free roaming, through random encounters
*** NPCs can be found doing a large assortment of things, from ambushes to gunfights to hostage scenarios to simple things like sitting around a campfire telling stories of Marston's earlier exploits
**** Its possible to join a group of NPCs around a campfire and hang out and enjoy a narrative set piece, but theres also the risk of them being dangerous bandits.
* Allied NPCs are marked with blue markers on the minimap
** Enemy NPCs are marked with red markers on the mini map
*** Lawmen are marked with a red or blue marker (depending on your current standing) but with a white star in the middle
**** Gangs have their own markers as well, which lets you track them down
***** Occasionally gangs take over towns

****** Gangs have hideouts as well that you can stumble upon. Clearing out gang hideouts earns Achivements/Trophies
******* Wiping out a gang has no bearing on your Wanted level
* The corpses of NPCs can be looted
* A wide variety of NPC personalities, including savage cannibals and killers
* NPCs will offer your random missions
* All NPC encounters depend on the time of day, location, your Honor and Fame and what you're wearing
* Indians are present, though not uncivilized.
** Chinese are present as well.
* There are around 200 different pre-scripted scenarios that occur randomly. Their outcome depends on the player's actions and the NPC's AI

7. Travel
* Marking a way point destination draws a path on the mini map
** There are also arrow signs pointing towards various destinations
* Three main methods of transport: Horseback, stagecoaches and trains
** Stagecoaches and trains allow you to take a nap while going on the destination, allowing you to bypass the trip time.
** Stagecoaches and trains operate on a timetable and will give you a ride for a fee.
** Passing stagecoaches can be flagged down.
*** When riding in stagecoach you can change seats (likely to shoot out different windows), slow down the coach (likely for more accurate shooting) and skip to your destination
*** Stagecoaches can be driven. Taking a sharp turn too fast can cause it to flip over.
* Horses have personalities
** Wild horses have to be lassoed, broken and saddled before riding
*** If you're unsuccessful at this the horse will buck you and you can get dragged
** Any horse that isn't yours or hasn't been yours for very long will be a little wilder and more difficult to control
*** A horse thats unfamiliar to you won't respond to a whistle call. A horse you've spent time with will come to you when you whistle, and will even buck off a thief.
** When dismounting a horse you have to tie it upat a post. If you don't it will continue to follow you.
** Horseshave their own health/energy meter, which is Blue and on the Left side of the mini map
***Different breeds of horses have different speed and stamina.

** Spurring a horse too much will agitate it enough to buck you

** Riding a horse in rough terrain is slower than riding on a trail or road

*** If you ride too fast in the rough brush it can get agitated and buck you

** Location based damage. Specific reactions to gut, back, leg, arm and torso shots.
*** A gut shot will make the NPC crawl on the ground and slowly bleed out
** Horses will spew a jet of blood when shot due to higher blood pressure
*** Horses will rear up if a fire starts beneath them, possibly dumping their rider.
*** Horses will get spooked by gunshots and might dump their rider.
**** Their rider's foot may get caught in the stirrup and they might be dragged off.
* Shooting from horseback is possible but is less accurate
* Aiming is primarily a lock-on system.
** When your weapon is drawn a crosshair is on screen, except when reloading. This allows for free-aim
*** When pressing the lock-on button the camera zooms in close to Marston and the crosshair snaps to the nearest target. You still have full control and can aim elsewhere while zoomed.
* When coming across a gun fight, the icons of fighters will flash red and blue on
the map. Shooting someone makes you an enemy to their side and an ally to the other side.
** Attacking both sides of a conflict makes you an enemy of both sides.
* Equippable weapons laying around are marked with a glint or shine.

9. Notoriety
* Three stats regarding Notoriety: Fame, Honor, Wanted Level
** Fame
*** Stat tracking how well known you are
*** Never decreases
*** Higher fame opens up more missions
*** Having high enough fame means you can settle some disputes with words rather than fighting.
** Honor
*** Stat tracking how honorable or dishonorable you are
*** Honor is tracked by a black meter that pops up on the bottom of the screen
**** The red end is dishonor, the green is honor.
*** Doing he honorable thing in a situation nets an increase in honor. Attempting to do the honorable
thing but failing will earn less honor, but still some. Doing the dishonorable thing will decrease your honor.
**** An example situation is coming across a hostage situation. Saving the hostage earns the most honor, trying but failing to save the hostage earns a little honor, killing the hostage removes honor.
*** Depending on your fame, your honor will affect how NPCs react to John.
**** Being honorable earns discounts at stores and the law men will be more likely to turn a blind eye for minor crimes.
**** Being dishonorable means higher prices at stores and lawmen keeping a closer eye on you. NPCs will fear you and will avoid you.
*** Honor affects the missions presented to John

** Wanted Level
*** Breaking the law puts a bounty on Marston's head
**** Being spotted by a civilian can earn you a bounty if they tell Law Enforcement
***** Witnesses are marked by a flashing “eye” icon on the minimap.
****** Killing witnesses before they alert law enforcement will keep your name clear
*** Various crimes come with various prices, which are added to your bounty
**** Example crimes:
***** Horse Slaughter
***** Murder of a Law Man
*** There are two stages of your Wanted Status
**** The immediate stage involves having to escape a red circle. The circle is full of pursuing law men. Being spotted centers the circle around you. Escaping the circle means you can return to town unharmed, but your bounty remains.
***** In the higher levels of your bounty lawmen will come after you with dogs.
***** Lawmen will attemp to lasso and hogtie you. If they succeed you will be arrested and there will be a scene of Marston in jail.
***** Wearing a bandanna over your face when committing a crime disguises you and lets you escape quickly once you
remove it, but your bounty will remain.
**** The long-term stage is in the form of your bounty. As long as you have a price on your head you will be pursued by bounty hunters. The bigger the bounty the more hunters come after you, sometimes with posses.
***** Leaving the region you acquired your bounty in will stop pursuers, but returning will draw their attention again.
*** Having a large bounty on your head equates to having more fame.
*** The ways to remove your bounty include bribing a law man, paying it off yourself (by wiring money via a telegraph station) or doing work for the law men which nets you a pardon letter.

* Being cruel to a town will make the town's folk hate you and eventually shoot you on sight. Being kind to a town will make them very hospitable

10. Missions

This game is bananas. Y'all are going to like the multiplayer. It's definitely a game onto itself. I've barely scratched the surface of this or the single player. I could easily see myself playing this for months and they haven't even dropped the FREE co-op downloadable content. I did a couple of the single player missions. The voice acting is top notch. If you've played GTA IV then you'll pick up the mechanics quickly. I'll see y'all cats online.

Played a few missions last night, saved a guys daughter from some bandits, hunted some animals, got drunk and stumbled outside to find a guy straight stabbing this girl on the ground(random event) had to shoot him..lol.

So far Im loving it, I can't wait to hop into multiplayer.

It's not as much fun to just fuck around in as GTA, but overall it's great. Getting full "bad" honour is really easy compared to getting full "good" honour. Traveling between places can get a little annoying but the quick-travel option fixes that. The only thing is that you may miss out on some cool random encounters or animals.

I haven't been able to try out multi yet because I can never connect. Maybe their servers are being overloaded or something.

I just gotta get more comfortable going right into Dead Eye on horseback as soon as I see something. He will destroy some nature though. Those wolves are 4 legged money bags.

I was doing a stranger mission involving the Armadillo saloon and was escorting the lady inside when I noticed another guy chasing one of the brothel chicks outside with a knife, he pinned her down and I shot that motherfucker.

Of course, I failed at saving a man that was beaten to death... and boy those wolves kill quick.

i somehow keep finding myself on the business end of a lot of rifles. first i take on the cowboys riding thru armadillo shooting guns in the air, then i stumble across something going on the desert (robbery), then i accidentally rob a bank. i keep getting killed like a motherfucker. i need a thicker leather vest or some shit.

i walked through some door in the bank and the teller started freaking out. i panicked and shot him (itchy trigger finger and whatnot), and figured since the cops were coming, i may as well try and grab some loot!

i shot at a guy shooting at 2 people running away from him. the guy i shot at was a cop i got chased for 10 minutes by him and his posse.

they pay the price with their meat and pelt though.

so far this is everything i could ask for in a video game

From looking at the post, it seems this game is more serious and true to life compared to the GTA series, but it looks nice in terms of the details I am skimming from these threads.

I might have to cop this after I get Mario Galaxy 2 out of my system in the next month or so.

Not yet, the story and voice acting are very strong and pretty funny.

I don't feel bored like I did with GTA4. This is an amazing piece of game so far.

this game offers up the diversions that GTA4 was sorely lacking to keep me hooked.

stranger missions, random encounters, poker, horse shoes, watching movies, getting a drink, treasure hunting, herb hunting (lol) and just wandering the desert. it's just fun, so much stuff to do.

i suck at five finger filet ... but it is pretty fun.

plus, my right hand is my trigger/gun hand.

and there's so much to explore and do. And I haven't even attempted to play multi yet or form a posse, which is probably where the fun really starts. This is one of the best games I've ever played.

I was waiting for just ONE person to even hedge or say it's aight or gripe about something, but nada -- just lots of crazy retellings of bear encounters and indecipherable stuff about guns and knives and doing bad stuff to characters I don't know, and I realized I had to get on board.

I've won every time I play, which isn't often because it takes so long to squeeze out the last guy, but the number of straights and flushes you catch are a bit far fetched, and other players are staying in on like paired kings when there are four clubs on the table and you go all in...easy money.

If you are comparing the two, regardless of how you felt about GTA4, RDR has much more to do.

In addition, it's an environment that none of us have really explored before unlike the urban setting which has been done to death so there's a certain degree of novelty that makes everything more fun.

Before I get restless and want to go outside myself. It is a very pro-nature game.

Deadeye isn't fair when you really learn to use it. I go after bounties and end up killing everyone in one attack, even when I want to take the bounty in alive.

and my running bounty of ~$700 isn't helping either. need to get back on the good side of the law and fast. sick of having these posses, bounty hunters and law men track me down.

My honor is maxed out, but my Fame is crawling.

nothing new for a GTA / Rockstar game to be glitchy, though, I'm just always surprised at how little criticism they get for shipping some buggy crap.

they are both fun but FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR from perfect.

and I didn't feel like replaying the drawn out story mission again that I *just* had crash as I was going to rendezvouz for the final completion.

I'm just blown away by these reviews that will pan one game as buggy and dock points in a final score, then give a pass to Rockstar games even though they routinely ship some of the glitchiest games on the market.

but a lot of these missions only earn you like $40 or some bullshit like that and seem to be game-fillers. I do some of them though, but I'll be damned if I do everyone of them that presents itself. If it's not getting me a new article of clothing or something that means something, most times I'm gonna pass it up.

The ending to that flower gathering mission is fucking great. As is the one where you have to find "Jebs love". They add to the game a lot.

I'm actually going through with the hang-gliding guy, where I have to gather the feathers, Red Sage and beaver fur for his glue, because that seems like it may have some importance. But if it turns out that I only get $40 for all my hard work, heaven help that guy.

Ain't no room for weirdos in the West.

i was hanging around the macfarlane ranch hoping they would show up like the walton gang in armadillo. no dice. went up to where HS is marked on the map and there is nothing there ... cept critters to shoot.

......I went to the outfits menu and hit the "track" button. When I came back from the bounty mission, the gang was waiting for me by that bridge over by Bonnie's house and the jail (where you do the bounty missions and the night watch missions) and I slaughtered them. There was a bunch of them too. That was my last thing to complete before getting that outfit too, and it took me a long time to get it. But it helps to track the tasks.

I'm scientific, but my reflex gangster

the meter will always start far off to one side and you have to be quick to get it in the middle. once you have a card, though, it's fairly easy to switch out cards or stash a higher card for down the road because, depending on which card you drop -- R or L -- the meter will be moving that direction towards the middle, so all you really have to do is stop it at the middle.

the caveat to all this is i have only played poker in armadillo, macfarlane & thieves, so i don't know if cheating gets a bit harder in bigger towns or different locations.

the more people at the table the longer you have to steady the arrow. so if there are 3 or 4 more people at the table and you're dealing you'll have more time than if there were 1 or 2.

but yeah once you get the first one it easy as hell to switch back and forth.

Pretty good, better than I thought it would be. The spawn camping is horrendous though. I was walking around minding my own business, and this one dude just followed me and spawn killed me for literally over an hour. I just put the controller down after like the 10th time, and he never got tired of it.

My honor is full and the folks in Thieves Landing stay trying to test my gun game. It doesn't end well for them.

So, yeah, my honor meter is pretty much full.

I may slip up every now and then. Like accidentally shooting my horse during a shootout. Or accidentally shooting a lady while trying to rescue.

When you talk to that random creeper with the top hat who knows all about you but wont say shit who he is and gives you this holier than thou attitude, I got pissed and just pulled my gun on him and it canceled the mission. It didnt save so I just quit and went back but damn, people are sensitive.

The ending for that side story pretty much stinks. Go through with it if you are a completist, but it's not one of the funner side missions in the game.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the American Hunger side mission yet. The plot turn at the end of that mission was pretty nice. Kinda surprised me, I have to say. Some creativity on Rockstar's part.

i just found that out

but to get the credits to roll, you have to finish a side mission that is very related to the final events in the game. I am not sure how many of the other side missions you have to finish to get the particular side mission I am referring too because when I played, I did the majority of the side missions before the latter stages of the game. If you want me to give more details, inbox me, but I figure it is more satisfying if you are able to track down the side mission on your own.

i'm riding out of one of the towns in the west and i see a dude getting attacked by a pack of wolves. i pick em off and dude thanked me. he walked away and i skinned the wolves.

then i hear more wolves.

how this dude get attacked by two packs of wolves no more than 100 feet apart? fuck that guy's life, man.

also there was a particularly funny moment where i fell for the lady needs help with her wagon trick and i shot the dudes all to pieces. i collected the loot and i breathed a sigh of relief because i died. then a cougar attacked me outta nowhere.

this law dude was chasing down a criminal so i lassoed the guy.
law guy was like, "thanks", then he shot the guy and proceeded to stroll the fuck off
seconds later, i hear the law man screaming, so i turn my horse around. the dude is getting his ass fucked up by a cougar lol

another time this dude wanted me to help save his wife cause they were about to hang her.
i shoot her down, kill the dudes
start to go on my way when the couple gets attacked by a gang of coyotes.

that shit is almost like a mel brooks film.

The only thing I don't like is the melee combat. One of my favourite things to do in GTAIV was just go around punching a bunch of randoms and taxi drivers to start an all in brawl, but punching in RDR is useless. There's no weight to the punches, and half of them don't connect but you still get the hit anyway. Everything else has been amazing so far. I've hardly done any of the story missions, I've just been riding around doing all of the random shit.

All I have to say is I was so happy to be out of Mexico, but Black Water seems like an after thought or the developers were just getting tired.

especially the later blackwater missions.

pretty good overall. great at cartain parts.

as for fav missions, Id have to say Marshall Johnson's missions were probably my fav.

I came across it on another forum. I'm not sure it would get anyone kicked off Live. It's a modded MP gamesave file that is taken from your xbox and then placed back on there.

It doesn't reflect anything on Leaderboards. It just basically gets you all the prestiged items + golden guns, which are only usable while walking around free roam, so it doesn't really give any advantages or change the gameplay for anyone, especially in actual MP matches.

All I know is that I finally made it to level 50 once and got my bull + buffalo rifle and I'm happy.

i head towards blackwater and keep tripping up on strangers and killing the fuck out of gang hide outs and shit. this game is THAT involving.

i'm going to try to make it outta mexico soon enough yo.

The ending is Epic

Because I "beat it" and then this bullshit with my family starts up.

I know how it ends, and I'm right at that "last" mission with John. I haven't done all the side missions and stranger missions yet. When you go past this last mission, can you still do the side missions you have left as the son later on or do you have to do them before John's final mission?

you can do them with the son

I was able to do that mission with the guy & the glider mission later

man i be by bear claw camp and them fuckers don't stop coming. i shoot one, skin it, turn around its another one. everytime i get off my horse lol. i killed 12 straight in like 2 mins. i didn't know bears ran in packs like that.

first off, butch jumping from a cliff was pretty anti-climatic. then the farm missions were boring as fuck. then john gets offed. but the worst thing of all, you play as whiny voiced jack!! like how does dude have a voice like a girl and have a 5 o'clock shadow and shit? then you spend FOREVER riding place to place looking for ross for it to all be quickly over in one 5 second duel. dumb.

in all i enjoyed the game enough, 8 out of 10 i'd say, but the ending stuff i mentioned above was boring as hell to me.

there's still a Ross mission? i thought it was done once you played with Jack. I even went and finished some of my old challenges cause I had nothing to do.

I'll have to play a bit longer and look for it.

How did they improve the game so much from the first disc? I noticed they stole some elements from BioShock, Gears of War and other great games that came out later.

They had fucking aliens on this bitch crying real tears, and this game has the best ass graphics I ever seen in a video game.

The conversation wheel got me spoiled, and it's hard to play other games now, because everything else seems dated, Red Dead tried with the honor system but it failed.

definitely one of my favorites. i for one was a supporter of them simplifying the inventory system. there were many that think it took away the RPG feel of the game, but i thought it made the game a much smoother experience.

Red Dead definitely tried with that honor system, but to tell yo the truth i never thought about what my honor was like the entire time i played. in ME2, on the other hand, i was careful to choose how i handled EVERY situation and conversation.

that's incredible...just when i was thinking of trading the game in, i now have a reason to keep it.

I'm really bored on these missions. I hope they get better.

I feel like this and GTA4 want to call themselves action RPG so bad, yet lack the essential elements. I think this game and gta4 would be so much better if they included character interaction and leveling. You can talk to a few people here and there but for the most part you feel like you are alone and people you see don't respond to you all the way. Not conversational. And leveling up could add alot to it as well. This is where Fallout has an upper hand.

I'll be riding my damn horse then for some reason it gets stuck in the ground & I can't move em AT ALL.

Then I'll be walking around then of a sudden, I get stuck in a glitch to where I can't move & it looks like I below the surface.

I swear, I love this game but these glitches are killing it for me. I think it messed my xbox up because it's been not reading it off & on.

Got about 1 hour into the story and was like, "fugg it".

Sent dis joint right back to gamefly. I wanted to like it, ...but it ain't for me. But keep in mind, I felt the same about GT4. I think I'm more driven towards linear story/mission-sequencing as opposed to the open-tackle-any-mission-at-your-own-liesure steez.

Too many times, I found myself not knowing what to do next and I HATED dat shit.

Haven't downloaded the add-on yet, but I'm sure I will cop this weekend when I'm sure I will have time to seriously get into this. Just curious if there are any serious glitches or not.

Horses of the Apocalypse are cool (I've only found War and Pestilence so far)



Zombie wolves, coyotes, cougars, horses and bears are cool.

There are bats!

Blunderbuss gun that shoots zombie body parts = cool.


My favorite character so far is the crazy dude you meet at Tanner's Ranch.

this game is gonna change the game. I can't wait to get my hands on this!

not bad so far but the things that irked me about GTA4 are poking up and the font is killing my eyes. I like the feeling of space that it successfully gets across.

and they were very successful in conveying wide open spaces.

the random encounters are funny until they throw 2 of the same ones back to back.

figured out my problem and it was that I needed to play with headphones since the only time I can play is when the offspring are sleeping. LOOVE this game and just got to Mexico tonight, which was utterly amazing to ride through.

I actually got too immersed in it the first couple weeks to the point where I got sick of it and took a long ass break. Once I took the time to start playing it again(I was about to head into Mexico for the first time), I couldn't put it back down (again lol). Just a tremendous game...the final area dragged a little bit but the final twist and redemption were just awesome.

and I fucking loved GTA
