208684, The Indispensable Android Apps Post
Posted by brown sugar, Mon Oct-12-09 03:54 PM
So I searched but found no such thread. Let's get the ball rolling. I just started using Android but let me start with some obvious ones, but good ones.

-Taskiller: Lets you terminate otherwise memory hogging apps still running in the background

-Facebook: right now just shows the minifeed but decent

-Pandora: y'all know what this is

-Ringdroid: turn your mp3s/music files into ringtones.

Last.fm - good for my last.fm folk

The Weather Channel - Comes with the app and the widget. The latest versions have gone a bit overboard with the weather alerts but it's still worth it imo.

Locale - Dynamically change your phones settings based on location, time of day or whatever. I use this to toggle my wifi on/off depending on if I'm in my house. It's also great for switching your ringtone and volume settings to something more work appropriate as needed.

Mobile Defense - Helps you locate and retrieve your phone if you ever lose it. It's free, for now.

Better Keyboard - I'm digging this one better than the Android default. It's fast, has big keys and it's skinnable.

I'll be back with more later.

Barcode scanner - scans/decodes barcodes. Highly useful.

Shop Saavy - works with barcode scanner to let you look up prices and reviews for products on the fly.

Amazon - lets you scan a barcode or take a picture of a product to find the matching item (plus reviews) on Amazon.

That's one of the cool things about Android. It's designed so that different programs can all use each other.
208746, how well does the barcode scanner work?
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Oct-13-09 01:12 AM
I'm talking to a few companies who have this idea but all of the prototypes have specific ass ways that the picture must be taken in order for it to work in the high 60 percentile so I'm so far unimpressed.

I'm going to have to pick up an android phone soon to test these apps since it will round out my business' research.
208752, I'm not sure I understand
Posted by Nopayne, Tue Oct-13-09 02:37 AM
I've never run across a standard upc that I haven't been able to scan. Once you get the code number it's up to the app to know what to to with it.

It also works with qcodes.
208753, there have been issues with reading them
Posted by L_O_Quent, Tue Oct-13-09 04:26 AM
based off of the way the picture was taken. I'll check on these though and thanks for giving me a great reason to excuse the expense of an android phone in the near future :-)
208787, oh I see what you mean
Posted by Nopayne, Tue Oct-13-09 11:06 AM
It's not a problem cuz it uses live video to get the scan instead of a single picture. It usually takes less than 20 seconds to get a good fix.

I use it to backup all my shit between flashing new ROMs. They'll even upload your data to their online service, if you trust them. It's paid but it's served me well in the past.
208937, I'll need that for when I start rooting
Posted by JungleSouljah, Wed Oct-14-09 09:33 AM
I'm going to give it another month or so and then dive into it.

In your opinion, what's the best ROMs to root to? Cyamogen still worth while with all the C&D BS? I've heard about a few other ones, but that seems to be rather popular among the Lifehacker folks.
209003, I think I'm gonna stick with Cyanogen.
Posted by Nopayne, Wed Oct-14-09 04:58 PM
Rooting is inherently dangerous and I don't feel like beta testing for some random modder that has half a dozen people in their user base.

As a result, I just hop to whoever the biggest modder at the moment is and let their followers do all the testing for me. I wait a little while after each stable release before upgrading.

219069, it's kind of addicting.

which is the exact same idea.

it works pretty well for swiping words, but terribly for regular typing, which is quite annoying. I've been hoping Swype was better, I gotta go track it down.

edit: damn, doesn't look like there's one for the G1/Dream
219180, swype works reasonably well for normal typing.

230967, Where are you located in Cali?
Posted by wallysmith, Tue May-04-10 12:22 PM
(I checked your OKP profile, no stalker-o).

Reason I'm asking is because on the comments for Locale it looks like some users are having issues with the program pinpointing their location through GPS, thus defeating the purpose of the app. Also some are saying that the beta worked better than the $10 release for some reason; I just want to make sure that its coo in your area before I commit to the 10 bones, but it does sound like a kick ass app.

Also, how's your battery life on it? Sounds like it could really drain the shit outta your phone though.
231188, I'm in SF
Posted by Nopayne, Wed May-05-10 02:21 PM
I haven't had any major issues with it pinpointing my location. The trick is to define your regions to be a little bigger than the actual area. It only checks where you are every 15 minutes or so so you need to give it some room to work with.

One thing I've noticed is that every time they push out an update, people complain that the previous version worked better. I haven't had a problem though. You can always buy it and return it in that 24 hour window.

I get more than a day with Locale on which is all I need because I charge my phone every night. I think part of the reason is that I use Locale to turn off my wifi unless it detects that I'm at home. I've noticed that it occasionally turns the wifi back on briefly but I believe that's done on purpose.

i see 10k dl's for the septa joint, and 5k for the traffic cam joint (that's got much better reviews).

is the ad revenue stream steady for as long as all those folks are using it?

not trying to be in your b.i. (and can inbox if necessary), but i'm trying to see if this is worthwhile as an erstwhile side hustle.

You have to have over 100k users to see any real money from ads.
Between my two apps, I make about 6 dollars a day, barely enough
to buy lunch. I plan on making a premium version and use in-app
purchasing when it becomes available. I should have put it at .99
like I originally planned but I didn't think anybody would buy it
since there were other free ones.

251758, let me rephrase that
Posted by chap19150, Fri Mar-04-11 01:28 PM
I don't want to sound like it wasn't worth it. It was.
the reason I went with ads instead of charging for it was
because I wanted an ongoing stream to he pay for ongoing
development. With a public trans app every time they update the
schedules, which is often, I have work to do. In hindsight I
would have done the opposite. I have almost 20k users @ .99 a
download. When in-app advertising goes live, I charge to get rid
of the ads plus extra features.
251979, this is interesting. do you have a server that collects the info you need
Posted by poetx, Tue Mar-08-11 11:06 AM
from the other various sites, and then have your app get updated from the server? (push or pull)

i got ideas for apps, but don't do java (yet). i'm tryna do the math in my head on the best approach.

$6/ day for around 15-20k users (from ads) for one geo... if it was a national app and only, say, 20x that in terms of install base, that would translate to around 20*6 / day, so 120*365 = a bit over 40k/yr, which would be very decent to start with. especially with the option of parlaying that and doing a .99 version.

if a 10th of the users, so 40k, opted for the paid version, that would be 40k. but if the rest remained on the free version, that would be .9 * 40k or another 36k, for a total of about 70k. from modest results off of just one idea. and i got all types of ideas, ability to provide detailed design and functional specs (do that at work, anyway). and would be good at marketing.

this is really making me want to take the plunge.

peace & blessings,

240696, I can tell you there's a need for a decent comic release app, lol
Posted by celery77, Wed Aug-25-10 10:17 AM
as in an app that can give you a list of comic books (like Marvel + DC, superhero shit (and others)) that release every Wednesday. I found two free ones, both not very good, and a pay one that had poor word of mouth, so I avoided it.

might be hard to program, that's not my field, but if people are playing with apps, I can tell you there's a need for a good one.

and yes selfishly I just want a good one for myself.

I download apps constantly to see what's new and innovative out there, and I've found that the following list has always been reliable on my Droid:

LauncherPro (home replacement, used to FC all the time but after the new update it's stable)

Handcent SMS (miles better than the stock Messaging app)

Weather and Toggle Widgets (to get an exact replica of that dope HTC flip clock. Better than Beautiful Widgets)

Photo Frame Deluxe (I have it set to cycle the album covers of Things Fall Apart, Low End Theory, Black on Both Sides, Mos and Kweli are Black Star, and Donny Hathaway's Live album)

Folder Organizer (so I can change the icons of my home screen shortcuts. WAY easier to use and more stable than Better Cut)

ColorNote (much more visually appealing than AK Notepad)

Setting Profiles (the widget provides a quick way to change my setting profiles based on time of day and where I am)

Advanced Task Killer (put the widget on my home screen and tap it after every time I use the phone - extends my battery life by hours)

Mabilo Ringtones (tons of ringtones for free... has a ton of underground hip-hop on it as well)

Twidroid Pro (way better than the official Twitter app.)

Posted by dEs, Fri Sep-03-10 08:42 PM
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/09/03/mobile-app-echoecho-makes-check-ins-personal/

This week, we inadvertently stumbled across a pretty neat, cross-platform, geo-location mobile app titled echoecho. The premise behind echoecho is simple: instead of using a service like Facebook or foursquare to broadcast where you are, it offers a way of requesting the location of a single friend. The application integrates with your phone’s address book and sends a message to friends asking: “Where are you?” If your echo’ed friend chooses to reply, you are given their location and can then view that location — complete with the distance between the two of you — on a map . It is definitely an interesting, more personal twist on geo-location. We can see the service being useful in crowded bars, clubs, and the work place; amongst other locations/situations. Echoecho is available for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. If you’re interested in learning more, hit the read link to check out ee’s website or your mobile platforms app store to download the goods.

Running this with Locale gives you the ultimate in android automation. So far I've set up a profile to turn on GPS and alter the volume when running Google Nav, and another one to up the screen brightness and turn Wifi on whenever plugged in. But folks have been able to program profiles that txt-to-speech received SMS messages and turn on Pandora whenever the phone is plugged into a car dock.

Its a bit steep in learning curve, but well worth the price.

Peep the lifehacker articles on it to give you more of an idea of what it can do:

I don't think you even need Locale, since it has a location polling option too. I guess there are some Locale plug-ins that might be useful, but I haven't run into any situations like that yet.

It's a really powerful app. If anyone else uses Tasker, share the profiles you've cooked up! Always looking for nice tricks to get the most out of automation.

Since I was in the hospital for a few days (new baby), I've had a LOT of time to tinker around with some apps. Here's what got me through all my sleepless nights in between feeding times:

Subsonic - access your home server's stash of music. 30 day free trial, with mandatory "donation" thereafter.

PocketCloud - for connecting to Remote Desktop. It has a nifty pointer function to emulate mouse clicks. Free version can only save 1 connection and doesn't have pinch-to-zoom. Seriously considering paying for it, especially since it's cheaper than LogMeIn.

NeoRouter Free - Great for use in combination with PocketCloud, esp. if you don't have a static IP or use dyndns.

MangaReader

SNESoid - playing Chrono Trigger and Zelda: Link to the Past right now. Having a phone with a hardware keyboard helps.

- It doesn't seem to save for offline reading. I like to read my feeds while on the subway. I would assume that improvement is coming soon.

- I think this may be just me, but the font on my phone is unnecessarily large, maybe it's just my phone, the Epic 4G. They could fit more feeds on the screen with a smaller type. The larger size blows up the favicons to be really pixelated.

I will say I love the sync with the desktop google reader and being able to search my feeds is nice also.

well behind the stock browser in terms of speed, some pages don't render as well as stock (e.g. a couple sites I found that uses frames), and I'm not sure if flash is working much if at all from the few pages I came across. but the syncing between desktop FF with history bookmarks and passwords? win win win win win win!!!

look forward to when they @ the very least speed this up to be more usable.

http://www.droid-life.com/2011/06/21/tip-google-maps-traffic-widgets-can-save-you-some-serious-time/

This could be old news, but for those of you with long commutes and that are not familiar with Google Maps and its Traffic widget, you’ll want to pay attention. With this widget, you can set up a variety of locations that will in real-time, update to show you how long it may take you to get there depending on your current location. So as you can see, I’ve set up a few including a BBQ spot across town. According to Google Maps and its live traffic reporting, it should take me around 17 minutes to get there in some not so friendly (red) traffic. However, if I want to head down to Deschutes Brewery which is only 10-12 blocks away, it should take me just a couple of minutes.
To set these up, all you have to do is open up a home screen, long press, and choose Widgets>Traffic. After that you can name it in the first box, and then jump to the second to search for a particular location or plug in a specific address. Simple right?

263280, A Phony Netflix Android app warning. Legit or no? (link/swipe)
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 05:57 PM
Click on the link to see the visual cues they're talking about.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-20119498-245/phony-netflix-android-app-steals-account-data/?tag=cnetRiver

It looks like a legitimate Netflix app, but it's not. There's an Android app circulating that looks very much like the real Netflix mobile app, but it's actually a Trojan that steals account information.
The fake app, which was found on an online user forum, sends the user's log-in information to a remote server and displays a message saying there is an incompatibility issue with the hardware and then attempts to uninstall itself, according to a Symantec blog post.
The server that was receiving the stolen log-in data appeared to be offline today, Symantec said.
With the pilfered log-in information, the app creators could hijack accounts and they might have access to some information. However, they won't be able to easily get to the credit card data because the site only displays the last four digits of the card number. So it's unclear how they planned to make money off the scam. It might be a test run for a phony mobile banking app, which could yield access to much more sensitive information.
Typically, malicious apps are versions of legitimate apps that have been modified to include malware and then repackaged and distributed. But in this case, the app is a completely different program.
Confusion over the release of the real Netflix app created an opportunity for the app creators and increased the chances that people would get duped into downloading the malicious app, Symantec said in the post. Netflix offered an Android app in limited release to only certain devices earlier this year, but recently published its app on the Android Market with support for multiple devices.
"A gap in availability, combined with the large interest of users attempting to get the popular service running on their Android device, created the perfect cover for Andoid.Fakeneflic to exploit," Symantec said.
People should be careful where they get their apps and download them from trusted sources only.

263298, My opinion is that there is a bit of fear mongering here
Posted by BrillRick, Wed Oct-12-11 09:18 PM
I believe that people who downloaded this trojan are people who installed the app outside the android market because Netflix was not available for their respective device. As long as you install apps that are in the android market, you should be fine. If you are side-loading apps it's only obvious you should be cautious.
263308, That's kind of what I was figuring. Even though I'm a fan of the
Posted by Soon, Wed Oct-12-11 11:42 PM
idea of a freer distribution of apps than the fully centralized exchange, caveat emptor isn't so appealing when there's so much malware being coded up in the wild.

Not sure if it's 10 apps a day (for 10 days) or 10 apps total, but not too shabby regardless.

http://www.androidcentral.com/slew-popular-apps-suddenly-are-10-cents-android-market

Something interesting is going on in the Android Market this morning. A bunch of our favorite apps are suddenly going for a dime, with no real rhyme or reason for the discount. @dirkyd3rlc and @Pat_Huey on Twitter alerted us to SwiftKey and Minecraft on sale for 10 cents, and we've found others. (Update: And in the UK, the apps are going for 10p each, not 6p, which would be converted from 10 cents U.S. We definitely smell a trend here.)

Here's the list as it stands.

267713, I need a phone locator App
Posted by Buddy_Gilapagos, Thu Jan-05-12 05:06 PM
Not with GPS but with a sound. I am thinking it will work like this: When I lose my phone, I can call a number, enter a code, and the phone will emit a noise. It would be cool if it even let's me select the tone that will be emitted. Is there an app like that?

wkyc weather has a nice radar animation loop but i usually just use the browser / wunderground.

skydroid is one i'm not using right now because it's shitty in ohio during the winter. it's a golf gps rangefinder that integrates with maps so you can pick points on the course. also gives the standard distance to pin. 0.99 and no score tracking, but if you're paying attention, you can usually remember your score plus someone else's.
267741, wunderground just released an app

A lot of these are outdated. Maybe this should be locked and a new one started.
