there are trophies and $ rewards a-plenty in the game. I didn't read the instruction manual, but I think the $ rewards you get in the game can be used for the multiplayer upgrades.

There was a pretty funny $ reward while I was playing the game last night. A slight spoiler, it has to do with Marco Polo.
