...and the controller vibrates. I wasn't sure about it at first either. It will also tell you if the planet is how rich in elements it is. (Ranges from Rich, Good, Moderate, Poor and I think Depleted.)
When I first did it, I was just randomly launching probes cuz I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing. But once you start finding "sweet spots", you get the hang of it.
