NBA 2K9 SEASON (20 Games)

I have held 3 NBA 2K9 tournaments on the 360 in order to see which people would be interested in seriously participating in a 20 game season. By holding these tournaments I was able to weed out people who took too long to play their games or just flat out flaked. Now, three tournaments later, I have a solid list of guys who I think will play their games and ultimately produce a successful season (ala NFL 2K5). My selection criteria was based on the following:

- Old members from the NFL 2K5 League
- People who participated in one or more of the 3 tournaments
- Users who were ready to play their games
- Users who communicated via the boards to set up and/or reschedule games

OWNERS:

Some things I wanted to discuss before we start. It's your job to schedule your games with your opponent every week. I don't care if you use this post, the inbox, email, text message, or carrier pigeon, but you need to communicate. We all have lives and I know things come up like work and family. On that same note I'm not going to let a game hold the entire league.

Plus, we have this guy that lives kinda far. Other than a couple times, LOQuent has been good about scheduling games at odd hours for him. I'm asking that everybody work with him the best they can so he can participate. Cool?

I have yet to send out the invites. When I do, check your OKP inbox as well as your XBOX 360 Dashboard inbox for the password and invite. I'm trying to cover all bases so everyone gets the invite.

Teams will also be claimed on a first come first serve basis when the invites go out. Choose your team when you accept your invite.

Originally I wanted to break the conferences up by each owners actual locale. Like a real west/east coast setting. Unfortunately, I think I'm the only one on PST so...I don't think that would work. But if you guys have ideas for division names, let me know. I'll put them on on the website.

Just so you guys know, the games aren't played straight through. You have a pool of 5 teams you have to play per round, and there are 4 rounds (20 games). For example:

Yeah, good game. I couldn't get anything going. These guys could NOT grab a defensive rebound allowing you too many second chance opportunities. Then these dudes missed way too many short shots.

I got a good run against brotherskeeper in the third. That was the difference. He put up a good run in the 4th cutting it to 2 with 19 seconds left. I got a free throw to give me a three point cushion and held on for the win. Another good game, bk.

After I got GOT by Kobe and the Lakers, I was thinking you would have trouble w/ them too. Since you can't double online, I was kinda lost in defending him, and the game was over. Then when you and mercy4u started, I was like, "This dude came out swinging!" I don't know if I was just bored, but I kept checking the stats of that game for most of the 2nd half. I couldn't stop Kobe for nothing, you held dude to 13 points. Seemed like it was close.

I was following it on the website thinking, "Kobe gettin' in Leroy's @$$!" I made some adjustments pre-tipoff on handling Kobe. But "brotherskeeper" deferred much of the time with Kobe. Kobe did have 8 dimes. I was *just* able to hold on for the win.

But I really like how the 2K page updates the games live. It's just like following online on espn.com.

Go to "Manage Roster".
The to "Team Rotations".
The first five are on that list are the starters. The next ones are the depth chart. You can then adjust their minutes accordingly using the Left and Right triggers. Press "start" to save this lineup.

Yeah...I kinda (read: really) suck at this game. But at least I got one win. I honestly didn't prep for Young. I was really worried about Iggie and Brand. So Young got his points while I concentrated defensive efforts on the other two.

What I did was, I went to the game track in the stats menu immediately after the game. I selected the highlight I wanted and saved it to the HD. I then opened up Reelmaker in the main menu of the 2K9. You can save it in there to the 2K website. It takes a while depending on how many "effects" you put on the highlight.

Guys, I'm proud. It looks like we have a solid league (so far). I know some of you haven't played a game yet, and that's fine. But to those who have? Thank you. I don't see why we can't be done with round one a week from today. The game lobby has had some connection issues, but for the most part it's been stable.

I'm learning the Magic, I ONLY play with the PISTONS, but if you check the stats my learning curve moves like a cheetah on speed so fear me know because shaq won't have another game like that with me.

Several post game reports revealed Boston Celtics Coach, LACHzilla seen eating popcorn nervously as he watched the final minutes of the game from really crappy seats at madison square garden. Knicks coach CHIEFWON had no comment, just chuckled when asked about the sighting.

And this is just ROUND ONE! Ha ha.
While I hate the Knicks in real life, I'm pulling for them to make the playoffs!

Last week I tried changing it three times.
I exit out of that menu and it prompts me to save the settings.
When I go back, the minutes allocated are correct, but the lineups are still wrong.

You're right. When we started I asked for a one game a week commitment. Unfortunately one game a week with this league isn't feasible.

If you guys are making plans to get it done, cool. If one guy hasn't been available to play, after a certain time period I believe his opponent should get the win. I'll work on some definite rules so we don't run in to this again.

These are just some ideas I've thought of so we can keep the league moving from round to round. Like I said in the above reply, I asked for a commitment of at least one game per week. I was a bit overwhelmed that we got so close to finishing the first round in a week's time, I thought it would be possible for us to increase that minimum. Unfortunately not all of us work from home. But when one game is keeping us from moving to the next round, folks get anxious..ha ha. I understand both sides. Here are some ideas for rules going forward:

- Let's say there are 1 or 2 games holding up moving to the next round (like now). I propose that in situations like these, both owners get 5 days to complete their games before a random/determined winner is chosen. That 5 day countdown begins once there are 2 games remaining.

- When that 5 day time period comes to an end, if one owner has made efforts to play their game while his opponent is M.I.A., the former owner will get the win. This will be set on a case by case basis.

OR

- When that 5 day time period comes to an end, and neither owner can meet up to play, a random winner will be chosen by NBA 2K9.

Again, these are just ideas.
I'm open to your thoughts and suggestions.
I mean honestly it's your league too.

I personally think that we should be able to get done with a round in 1 week. It could be a day if we all try to coordinate schedules and get down on a saturday or Sunday. I understand that Life happens though.

Though you have a good argument and make a very good point, the league would drag on forever if we played 1 or 2 games a week. I think everyone is anxious to get it going again seeing as how we mowed through the first round so fast. I didn't know what to expect with elbee since he has the Truth now but he was a non factor in that game, then again he needs to get used to him. I was getting a little worried about Okur since he has more range then your average center.

I was checking the score and saw that it was close at the start of the 4th. How in the world did he let D. Howard go off for 16 in the 4th????

The 3rd quarter is when I found a defense that was giving Howard fits.

Like I was actually getting defensive stops.

Then I turned the ball over on 3 consecutive possessions RIGHT when we the best momentum of the game.

he's has waaay too much range. The best way to defend him is put someone quick and taller on him then shut him down the first two quarters to get him off his game and without Pierce there to dish too Perkins can't handle the load and I doubt Boozer will be in the swing of things if you play him soon.

Good game last night LB...you gave me the flux in the first half. I couldn't get ANYTHING going. That run at the end of the 3rd got me back on track though...

I couldn't make a shot in the first half. Then in the 3rd and 4th KG and Ray went nuts.

I don't know what was going on in that first quarter...I needed that little run right before half time helped me out. These fools missed WAY too many wide open jumpshots though. I need to work on that

The league is moving along very smoothly and I'm actually shocked how well it's moving. Games are being played daily...even to the point it's hard for me to try to keep up with my next match. Like the 2k5 Football league, the league home page is always funny and a good read. I'm really enjoying this!

I did some research on other 2K9 leagues at OperationSports.com, and a lot of other leagues have rules on how many points you can score in the paint. Like, if you go on our league website, every game gives you a break down of where you score. In some leagues, you can only score a certain percentage in the paint. The rest need to come from jump shots, etc. While I wouldn't implement anything like that in our league cause it's just too hard to police, I understand.

Online play, while very good, is still not as reactive as just playing a regular game against the computer. Shooting a jumper is so dependent on timing, it's hard to hit them sometimes. And with dunks and layups being so much easier to hit, it's not surprising 98% of the points in this league come from the paint.

Nah, it's not that deep man. Too much work for one person although,
I can see the value in that. I personally think 2k sports skewed the
gameplay a bit too much towards the inside game.

True. I don't have a problem with the timing issues in online play.
My main issue is that I can't double team at all (dead horse topic, I know)
but the fact that you can't double Kobe, LB, KG, and make your
opponent pass the ball and run offense to beat you makes this game a
little less fun. It's crazy frustrating.

I was about to say that the internet connection part is the main reason that cats wouldn't enjoy that, shit it even has an effect on my free throws -- though I don't know the Magic like my real team and that factors in.

I used to feel this way when I played online, but the thing is...this is a video game. A cat wants to score 80 points with Kobe or Lebron, you have to figure out how to stop him. Somebody is picking off every pass you throw, then you need to be more careful with the rock. Is it realistic?? No, but it's a VIDEO GAME. You have to adapt your game around your opponent's. There is no need for rules to be implemented, that's almost like adding a handicap. It's not that serious.

Your picking off example is spot on. Zipping the ball down court or making a lot of cross court passes causes turnovers and easy transition baskets. I'm with you there. But your scoring example in my opinoin doesn't work with 2K9. Especially online. In real life, the way to stop (or contain) players like Kobe, Howard and LeBron is to double them. With that option not available, what should opponents do? That's not to say you can't beat the Lakers, Magic or Cavs. Those teams can be beat, it's just not easy. And then you get in to the question...

It comes down to the person that is on the sticks imho. Someone can play with an All-Star team and still get blown out. I used to rock cats with the BOBCATS on a consistent basis. I'm just saying that people shouldn't be punished for someone else's lack of skill. Since the game will not allow you to double team when playing online, you have to be more creative with how you play defense. That comes with practice.


And to comment on ne_atl's comment about a dominant post player (not saying that he was referring to me), but I can score just as many points with Louis Almundson or Sean Singletary in the paint as I can with Shaq or Amare(if I wanted to).

if you have a big name center, it's pretty much obvious where the shots are coming from.

Ray's game is damn near perfect for 2K.
