To those reading this post title thinking they were going to read replies that would break down the differences between these two basketball games and spoon feed you, I'm sorry. This is NOT that thread. Every sports video game forum has a post like this and it just sickens me the people who create them. Posts like that serve no purpose for the simple fact that you get 50 people trying to claim fact when it's really an opinion. I'm here to tell you that there IS no right answer. But please, keep reading. I'm here to save you from yourself.

Back in the day, this is how we tested out games:

- the four copies of NBA-X at Blockbuster
- EGM
- the rich kid at the end of the block that got every game on release day (lach,rjcc)

Listen, you most likely don't live at home, you have a car note and you have a salary. It is NOT the early nineties anymore. If you're spending $60+, get off your ass and do some research. Back then we didn't have access to:

- youtube
- blogs
- countless websites w/ reviews
- online game renting services
- and the big one...DOWNLOADABLE DEMOS!

If you haven't tried one of the above methods, then you're not trying hard enough. I mean damn if it's about not having money, go to GameStop and play the game in the store. Or if you got that money coming in from Hampsterdam, BUY BOTH! Now I personally prefer the 2K series over EA Sports for a variety of reasons, but I don't think reading responses on this message board (mine or anyone elses) is going to make you any happier with your purchase over just trying it out. Please do us all a favor and go out and TRY the game first.

I'll be rolling with 2K once again. I will give EA Sports some credit, it's atleast playable this year unlike the last 2 years. I will at least say that 2K is worth the purchase.

Wish we could go back to that, but 2k has whooped Live's ass so bad at this point, it doesn't HAVE to come in at the cheaper price point.

Not that I'm mad -- not having picked up a bball game on 360, this will easily be worth $60.

Listen, I'm going to run two or three single elimination tournaments the week after the game comes out. I'm basically trying to see which people are dedicated enough to participate in a 20 game season. So if you're interested in playing in the season, sign up for one of the tournaments and don't flake out. If you flake out during the tournaments (aka not playing your games in a timely manner), you won't be considered for the season.

Simple enough.

Just any NBA roster we want to roll with? Or could we have the option to fantasy draft or what?

I'm just curious because I've actually never played an online tournament or season, and while my heart will tell me to pick the Warriors, I also wouldn't mind a little interior defense...

I'm more interested in WHO signs up and if they're dedicated to playing their games in a timely manner. The tournament is just to weed out the people who sign up then flake, so who you pick in the tournament isnt' assigned to you for the season. Once we know who's down to play FOR REAL, we'll settle up teams for the season.

I have absolutely hated this game throughout this generation of systems, but this plays really nice. And the DNA aspect is something game makers should of done years ago. Finally someone did it.

NBA 09 looks intriguing, with the story line where you can go through the D-League and all. But, in saying that, I never follow through with those kind of things.

2k9 has the same shit

360 is supposed to come a few days later.
Not that it matters for those copping on release day (tues).

Much sharper than last years. They actually beefed up the graphics. Still plays with 2K precision, the crowd looks better than ever, and the game in general looks much more vibrant than the Live 09 demo. Hands down this is the game to get once again.

Player movement. When in ISO, do the players just stand around? They were suppose to correct that.

or defense menu. kinda bare bones on the demo.

maybe its the PS3 version but damn the faces look more pasted on than they ever did rather than a part of the dude's actual body.

Why is there no one sitting at the T-Mobile Halftime desk? Off-the-court values are terrible while everything on-court looks like a genuine broadcast. Camera system for online play could be better.

Great looking player models that are improved from last year. Still an odd looking face here and there. Animations are silky smooth.

A solid soundtrack highlighted by Cool Kids’ 2K anthem. The commentary is solid but doesn’t go beyond the call of duty.

Refined gameplay that captures the speed of the NBA game without reverting to being an arcade title. A few annoyances here and there are all that hold this one back from a guaranteed spot in the Hall.
9.0 Lasting Appeal
The online play is great, despite the screwy camera, and The Association 2.0 has all the length and depth anyone could want from their franchise. Blacktop is a clear afterthought but it's still cool.

Was playing for a good little while today and then the console started
freezing. Shutdown, restart, play (for a while), repeat.
Call MS, tell them about the freezing issue. $99 to fix? Bastards!

Lost my first joint to the Sixers.
Lost another game to the Bucks.
Finally won against the Heat (Beasley vs. Rose).
Love how the players move as you bring the ball down the court.

And in the half court offense, Dwight Gooden came up to set a pick, but the play didn't work out right, so he rolled to the basket.

It's definitely better looking than last year, but the animations aren't all that different from 2K8. Or, maybe I haven't seen them all.

I'm horrible defending the paint. Horrible.

Derrick Rose is very fast for his height.

Loved hearing N.E.R.D.

Loved how I had a close game with the Bucks, and my bench was all standing up.

Loved how it was Michael Redd and Richard Jefferson were killing me, not some random PG or C off the bench. I'm going to play another game against the Lakers just to see how many shots Kobe takes.

I got caught guarding D.Wade with Joakim Noah. He scored. It was bad...ha ha.

I know it'll probably get old, but I like the game presentation between the quarters. Very TNT like!

Some of the auto substitutions are suspect. But that's a given with AUTO subs. I'd never have Ben Gordon at SF, no matter how far behind I am.

5 minute quarters felt like a solid game, but I think I'm going with 6 minutes.

I mean, okay -- everything about 2K9 is great, with maybe the exception of the double teams. That works a little weird. I figured out how to recognize it and pass out early enough, though.

BUT I LOVE the jumpshot animations. That shows the kind of love that goes into this game, where I see a guy rise up for a shot, and I KNOW who it is. Monta with the weird feet tuck. Aldridge with the insanely high elbow. Roy with the forward feet kick. SJax with that retarded fucking set shot. THIS is what I've wanted from a basketball game for sooooo long. Maybe this feature is old as shit, but I haven't had a version of this game since like 2K5 or something, on PS2, so I'm geeked as hell on it.

I've been winning and losing with the Warriors, the Blazers, a custom drafted team (I love custom drafted teams). It's just as good as the old 2K games that I remember. Play smart, you're rewarded. Get lazy and drive, you get a charge. Lose concentration on defense, and you're punished. Also, properly executing plays gives you a bonus. Watch your SG slip his screens, then hit him in the hands and rise for the jumpshot, you'll shoot a REALLY high percentage. Also going into 1-on-1 situations with a good low post scorer.

I'm able to consistently shoot 45-55% on offense, higher even in a few games, working pick and rolls, kick-outs, and in particular KNOWING the capabilities of my players (no mid-range with player X (actually drained an open, rhythm corner three with LaMarcus last night -- lol), good three-ball with player Y, good hands at the basket with player Z, etc.)

But on defense? DAMN! If I leave players 1-on-1, they'll burn me, so I start to double, then they pass out and burn me. Somehow the MOMENT they get a step they go on cruise control straight to the rim, meanwhile whenever I try that on offense I beat one defender, then run into three more under the hoop somehow swatting me, all while my frontline is a bunch of scrubs. It's hard.

I'm sure I just need to learn some discipline and how to play the defensive match-ups better, but the shit ain't easy. Still -- LOVING IT. Working a perfect pick-and-pop, watching a player go under the screen, or killing a dude going over to the rim, or making the pass as the double comes, goddamn it feels good.

Most of the CPU's points come in the paint for me.
Granted Joakim Noah and Dwight Gooden aren't Duncan & Bowen.
But still, I should be able to force the CPU to at least kick it back out.
I've even tried playing zone. Nope.
I need to put some more games in.

The few games I was able to win the CPU had weak wing players, so I was able to shut down the inside game, then they'd brick the outside shot (I had Brent Barry going like 1-10 in this game, all on open jumpers).

So it seems like you have to find the COLD hand, then double off them, but often they just hide the worst player on the weakside, so getting an effective double off them can be really difficult.

I think I'm going to mess around with roaming a little with weakside defenders, see what new way the CPU finds to burn me then.

but that was only because I was trying to play the passing lanes.

Nash went ballistic from the 3pt. line but when he would drive I got
good help from my big guys down low.

I love the help defense when the man gets a step on you.

I use the shot stick, and I try to adjust by leaning my shot left or right, or going straight up if I think I have a good lane. It works sometimes, but sometimes there's just too many defenders, too.

I find about 50% of my "successful" drives involve getting bailed out on foul calls, too. If they're not swatting you, they're sending you to the line. Actually *making* a lay-up is hard as shit. I've gotten some three-point plays, too, which is satisfying.

A few times now I've been able to find a favorable match-up, get a step, find a guy pinned inside the circle, and then MASH on him with my SG or SF. Goddamn that's satisfying in this game, cuz you have to WORK for it. There really aren't many easy dunks, even on rebounds and putbacks and stuff.

Played a game against the Bucks last night in my Bulls franchise. Bucks went on like a 13-2 run in the 3rd. I was LMAO at how the home crowd was booing me off the court. But when I came back in the 4th (and ultimately won), you could see and hear the crowd getting hyped. I love it.

As said above, jump shot animations are spot on. Player moves are more realistic. Also I like how in this game you got to put in work to score in the paint (unlike in 2K8, where I could just take it to the hole at will)

Them blocking fouls are pissing me off, thought. They must've called that at least 10 times. May have to adjust those sliders.

That halftime empty desk thing is very....odd. They couldn't put someone at the desk? (nitpicking, I know)

Defense is great. The AI truly does adapt to what you're doing on offense.

Are there any pivot moves in this game? Maybe I haven't noticed it yet.

All in all, this was 60 bucks well spent.

I started my Bulls franchise too, and I'm thinking of trading him for a low post presence or something.

Trading Hughes is definitely on the agenda. Noah and Gooden are each good for about 6-8 rebounds a game. But I'm looking for someone that can consistently get me some points down there, too.

I'm playing as the sixers vs the knicks
and the whole first half I have miller feeding
the ball into elton brand in the post and scoring easily.
I was up by 10 at the half. The second half they had
Marbury play off of Miller and block my passing lane
to Brand. Marbury ended up with 6 steals and I lost by 3.

Yup.

Second game of my franchise was against the Celtics. First quarter, I'm taking it to the hole and getting to the line frequently. From there on out, the C's clog the lane, forcing me to shoot from the outside.

Long story short, I ended up getting blown out by 19 points.

I found the give n go and was working that to death with the suns when all of a sudden the ai started playing the pass and stealing the ball, I was down 10 before I realized what was happening.

yeah its a tale of 2 halves every time i play.

Just played a damn good game vs. the Magic.

Game was tied at 98 with about 16 seconds left. I got the ball. So I'm milking the clock with Rose. I'm trying crossovers, but I can't shake the defender. So I just drive in for a layup...AHNT!

Okay, so now we're in the first OT. After a couple back & forths, I gain momentum and have a five point lead. DOWN GOES TYRUS (who was beasting in this particular game). Whatever. I'm still winning. Then Rose makes two dumbass turnovers (#1, he lets Jameer Nelson strip him of the ball, then tries to dive for the ball and ends up face first on the floor. #2, Deng inbounds the ball to him. But with the way Rose was positioned, his momentum ended up taking him out of bounds. Orlando ball)

Okay, now we're on to the 2nd OT. At this point, I become a dumbass and start getting away from my strategy (shooting the three with Gordon, driving with Rose, and getting points in the paint with Tyrus). Since Tyrus was out, I'm stuck with the two guards. Orlando double teams Gordon everytime he touches the ball. And I make two more idiotic turnovers with Rose. Long story short, I ended up losing in Double OT by about seven.

Yeah, I've lost three straight (1-3). But shit, this is a good ass basketball game!

Also, I like how they break down your game completely with that "VIP" thing. Such a great feature. They may have had it in past games. If so, I never paid any attention to it.

It pretty much breaks down all of your offensive and defensive tendencies.

Example, for offense you may see something like:

-Doesn't force bad shots
-Plays a slashing-type game
-Rarely changes shot
-Likes to play one-on-one

Stuff like that. There's a lot more depth to it than this, though. You should check it out.

2K Sports snuck one in on us by releasing this two weeks after the PS3 / 360 release date. I think the smart money is on the PC version (provided you have a gamepad), only because it's coming out at a price of $19.99. You can't go wrong with that!

I've had the game a few days and only played my roommates...I was excited to go online but I'm not playing with side cameras or whatever. That sucks.

...its not bad ...kind of that old school "lakers vs celtics" feel to it

Copping this game reminded me of everything I hate about the b-ball games of the past (whether it's Live or the 2Ks), in one respect at least...

Why, oh why, can't I set my fucking offensive plays and keep them set? I have to fucking set them up every... time... I... start a new game...

Defense is indeed tough... and I'm finding that there are too many blocks, imo...

But everything else about the game is Kool and the Gang

I love the game, but they really need a patch to fix the retarded goaltending calls. Every time the ball hits the rim and someone goes up to grab the rebound, they call a goaltending foul. Its seriously annoying.

that is a goaltend. even if ball hits the rim, if it's over the cylinder, it's a goaltending violation. only in international FIBA play is this not a goaltend.

I always thought goaltending was only after the ball began to descend. I thought once the ball hit the rim, goaltending was no longer in effect.

I think I've settled on all star for my association.

2nd game until last night, Pro.
Last night until...All-Star.

I got killed in All-Star cause I was my offense was scattered.
But once I settled down and started running some plays...
(and George Karl sat Iverson, Carmello and Nene)
...I did better.

Taking 2K8 off was a bad decision.
