There are more than twice as many Blu-Ray players out there. It doesn’t make sense for a studio to support a format without as much support.

Any studio making HD-DVD movies was just wasting money.

hint: it takes a sweetener to get studio support for a niche format. no one is selling enough HD movies to affect their bottom line, and they're not missing cash by not releasing.

they're more concerned about trying to win the console war which is a reason HD DVD was never built into xbox. HD DVD is much cheaper for everyone involved as it was more like regular DVDs than blu ray. Ultimately, blu ray won't provide anything that hd dvd didn't other than making it extremely hard for anyone to find a media alternative to buying expensive blu ray to get the most of their hdtvs. Piracy using a 50gb disc will be very hard. Sony knows this. The encryptions will constantly change (hell, some of sony's recent encryptions on regular dvds is off the chains) plus it'll take someone much longer to copy. I don't like the reasoning behind blu ray. But it looks like it's the future till people all get super duper extreme internet download speeds which is a long ways off imo.

they backed it and tried to get supporters , bottomline
as far as them not including it in the machine iono if thats relevant now that the price of Ps3 and 360 are so close
if anything m$ prolly make more money off accessory sales
thats prolly why they wanted to sell that shit separate
that and the fact they knew about the RRoD, they prolly didn't wanna have to replace the console AND the HD DVD player
that woulda increased the cost of all those warranties

HD-DVD has shit to do with 360. Matter of fact Microsoft has said that they are not opposed to having a Blu Ray add-on if that's what the people want.*

You really think Microsoft is concerned about the format wars? They streaming HD video straight to the console. There's more of a demand for that than

If anything, Sony had more to lose than Microsoft since BR was built into their console.

Let's stick to the topic

selling wack shit. I'm talking about the reason 99% of people use their computer DVD burners (a reason right now why DVD prices have come down so much as well). That shit will come to a crashing end soon as blu ray drives come down in price and start being a part of your computer instead. But that's besides the point. Sony is doing their thing. Can't fault them. Their strategy for pushing blu ray through PS3 worked. I just want some good games from them now since I'm investing my dough in a Ps3.
138313, I think you’re underrating Blu-Ray a little bit.
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Tue Feb-12-08 01:13 PM
From a pure tech perspective, it’s a bit better than HD-DVD.

>they're more concerned about trying to win the console war
>which is a reason HD DVD was never built into xbox.

This is true. They wanted to get the 360 out quicker than the PS3 and get a jump. Original plans for 360 included an HD-DVD drive, but they scraped it because it was taking too long.

HD DVD is
>much cheaper for everyone involved as it was more like regular
>DVDs than blu ray.

It’s currently cheaper because it uses a similar process as DVD to make the discs. Once production really ramps up on Blu-Ray, the cost will be the same.

As it is, the cost per disc for Blu-Ray isn’t THAT much more than HD-DVD.

>Ultimately, blu ray won't provide anything
>that hd dvd didn't other than making it extremely hard for
>anyone to find a media alternative to buying expensive blu ray
>to get the most of their hdtvs.

Nope. Since I first heard about both specs, I always thought Blu-Ray was the better one because it’s possible to store more data on each disc. The theoretical limit for HD-DVD is a four layer disc with 15GB per layer. That’s a total of 60GB. Blu-Ray is a bit better since it can have up to eight layers in theory. At 25GB per layer, that’s 200GB, or more than double the amount of data that can be stored on HD-DVD.

The ability to eventually back up your hard drive to two or three discs is incredible, especially considering these discs have a shelf life that’s much longer than your average hard drive. Not to mention the possibilities this offers for gaming (not so much this gen, but next gen will probably get a ton of use out of that size increase)

Piracy using a 50gb disc will
>be very hard. Sony knows this. The encryptions will constantly
>change (hell, some of sony's recent encryptions on regular

>internet download speeds which is a long ways off imo.

Both discs use similar security measures (maybe the same; ask RJ). The size of a 50GB Blu-Ray disc makes downloading a bootleg a pain, but it wouldn’t be that much better with a 30GB HD-DVD. Unless internet speeds increase in line with the filesizes, all of this stuff is going to be a pain to download.

Posted by chillinCHiEF, Thu Feb-14-08 01:29 PM
Most of the rumors leading up to the final reveal of the system were saying it would have an HD-DVD drive.

Generally rumors in gaming don’t just come out of thin air.

Heck, I remember thinking "that would be dumb" when some folks starting speculating it would use DVD9:

Bottomline is that Netflix will ultimately make more money off of streaming HD movies than shipping out physical media. I've downloaded and watched more movies from my 360 than rented physical DVDs over the past year.

>and youre in the majority of consumers, FOH.
>physical media is not going anywhere soon.

Physical media is shrinking in size monthly, just 2 years ago MiniSD was the standard, now MicroSD is. Consider the fact that 32GB SD cards are soon to arrive at an affordable price point... DVD's (Blu Ray or HD) are HUGE in sheer size...the Disc format is simply not gonna be around long in the grand scheme of things.

>not accusing you of it, but some of these HD DVD fanboys are
>just coppin the DD pleas after their L.

I'm not a fan of either honestly.

>What machine are all these consumers going to download all
>these movies on, and where are they going to watch them?
>Their 360, PS3, a netflix mahcine, some media PC, appleTV,
>lol?

Yes to all of the above. I'll give you that there are folks that like to actually OWN a hard copy of movies...but the sheer success of services like Netflix and On Demand are a testament to the fact that most folks rent a movie once and never watch it again. THOSE are the majority. Therefore owning a physical copy is not really the future. You should add cable company supplied set top boxes to your list also fam...those are in the majority of homes right now. So it really isn't necessary to have a gaming system or PC to take advantage of downloadable HD content.

>You think your technology illiterate aunt is going to download
>movies on her PC?

No, she's gonna navigate to the On-Demand screen of her cable box and click "Rent This Movie"

people like owning movies, and the box that goes with it.

DD is on the rise, but doesnt mean physical discs are dying. blu ray doesnt need to sell as much as dvd to be a success.

audiovideophiles won't be into DD for a while either for obvious reasons.

once hd dvd is officially dead, studios will start to push retailers to narrow the dvd selection in favor of blu ray, and basically force consumers to go blu ray.
they are going to want you to buy your movies in blu ray again, just like you did from vhs to dvd.

With every major cable company now providing some type of On Demand service, more people are opting to go with on demand rentals over driving to the video store to rent a disk.
What makes you think this trend is gonna somehow stop with the onset of Blu Ray or HD DVD war being over?

In the long run, digital downloads/rentals will net the studios more more money than sales of hard media. I'm glad that a clear selection for the standard physical HD media has finally been decided....but it's really not as big a deal as folks are hyping it up to be. As much as it pains me, Apple TV & iTunes rentals are a bigger deal and more significant in the grand scheme. Despite all the DVDs on the shelves in your local stores, more people RENT than purchase. And the rental market is trending towards digital downloads. I'm going to be more excited when Netflix and others start allowing me to digitally download more HD content... THAT's when i'll have a celebration bitches lol..Until then..I say "meh" to all this Blu Ray hype.

I'm not really comprehending your point here.
Do you agree or disagree that ultimately Netflix can make more money distributing downloadable HD content to subscribers than sending out physical media?

138785, Netflix to offer movie streaming on 360/PS3??? (SWIPE)

Looks like Netflix agrees with FLUIDJ

Netflix coming to Xbox 360 and PS3?

According to a blogged up blog post on the interblogs, a Netflix survey that's supposedly been making the rounds suggests that the service may be coming to both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. If you believe what Seanbajuice has to say, the survey asked, "If as part of your Netflix membership you could instantly watch movies and TV episodes on your TV with your PS/3 or XBOX 360, how likely would you/anyone in your household be to do that?" The survey then goes on to state that both the PS3 and the 360 will be able to play streaming media by using a "special Netflix disc." Here's the kicker: there won't be any extra fees besides the $3 charge for the disc. Of course, nothing is mentioned about how the PS3 will handle the Microsoft-based DRM, and while the whole thing sounds too good to be true, there have been rumblings about this recently, so let's just cross our fingers and make a wish, okay?

I wonder if Toshiba will put HD-DVD support into their Blu-Ray players when they start making them. That would be really nice of them, and a great gesture to the folks that supported their format.

HD DVD dead... No More Format War... Go Buy A Blu Ray Player

Hey folks, Harry here... Depending who you are... you're either jubilant or morose today - because it's pretty much over. Sources inside Toshiba have begun leaking to the press - that Toshiba is no longer going to be manufacturing HD DVD players - and is abandoning the format altogether. Apparently, this decision is going to cost Toshiba hundreds of millions of dollars -

In the last few months, Sony has completely and totally flanked and surrounded HD-DVD. It started with the Warner Brothers move, when Warner's announced their decision to become dedicated to the BLU RAY format beginning this June - the world could feel a seismic shift. Then in a series of announcements from BEST BUY to NETFLIX to the most recent WAL-MART support for Blu Ray and abandonment of the HD DVD format... well, the rush to bury HD DVD has become quite aggressive.

How do I feel about this?

I love both formats - but generally I prefer the HD DVD discs. I have around 300 titles in hi def - a mixture of HD DVD and BLU RAY. I have 4 HD DVD players - and 1 BLU RAY player - and now that it has ended - I hope that the focusing upon BLU RAY means that the format becomes better. That the prices can begin dropping on their players - and their discs. MORE SO - I hope that BLU RAY winning the "war" means that a wider and greater supply of titles begin to be released. In the upcoming months - as the various outlets blow-out their remaining HD DVD titles - there will be added shelf-space for BLU RAY to take up. I'm hoping for many more vintage titles. Just yesterday I was at FRY'S to buy Quint his BLU RAY birthday presents - and I wanted to buy him some older titles - and there wasn't much to choose from.

Now that the Format war is over - there's still another war for the companies to wage... the war to get the populace to abandon standard def DVD and en masse convert to BLU RAY. The only way that'll happen is if Blu Ray lowers their prices significantly on their titles. There's a lot left for SONY to do - but now that they've slain their biggest enemy - all that is left is to win the hearts, minds and dollars of the rest of the consumers to make the big conversion.
