The new Zunes are nice tho. If I didn't get a 60 gig a few years back I would have gotten one.

And I really hope they give Apple some competition.

My coworker came in flashing his lil joint the other day...he then proceed to show me all these "fancy" web tools he could use..
He walked away sad when i pulled out my WM6 XV6800 and proceeded to do everything he did but like 10 times faster. AND when I told him it was about $200 less than his shiney toy. AND he was even more hurt when the IT guy told him that it wasn't capable of pushing his email therefore he would have to rely on his slow ass Edge web connection to navigate to our online email server.
oh yeah AND since he can't use it for work, he can't expense it either lol...

There's a little repeat icon on the iPhone, right next to the time bar (there's also a shuffle icon on the other side).

All you do is tap that to make the song repeat.

so, the whole "can't repeat" argument is null

132289, not even a comparison then.... now if yall wanna talk Phone vs. Phone
Posted by FLUIDJ, Sun Jan-06-08 03:43 PM
Then we can go there. Matter of fact, i think a new "Rules of Engagement" post is in order. There is way too much apples to oranges comparisons going on here.

Iphone is a phone that maxes out at 16GB, not comparable to any Zune device or any other MP3 player for that matter, it's not in the same league or class.

I guess the Ipod Touch is technically in the same genre as any flash based MP3 device, so to campare it to flash based Zune or any other flash based MP3 player is ok.

The "Classic" ipod is in the same genre as the Zune 30GB & 80GB and any other hard drive based MP3 player....

So all of you folks talking iphone this and iphone that can just leave the room. Because as soon as I pull out a WM6 device, yalls shit is pretty much shut down anyway.

132343, no it isn't because all I have to do if I don't want to repeat is click next
Posted by dEs, Sun Jan-06-08 11:23 PM
and boom, I'm on another song

referring to how my Samsung yp t8 works

you select repeat one

go to a folder play a song, tired of hearing it? click next

in any case, it nullifies the purpose of quick list, you have to empty
your quick list just to repeat one song, when you should be able to
select a setting, without that you have to refill your quick list
every time you wanna repeat a song

really tho, they should add it to whatever pops up when you click the D
pad while you're listening to a song

132370, Well shit, if that's the case, just push the D-pad back to repeat the song lol

132502, I got a 2gig T9
Posted by Fisticuffs, Tue Jan-08-08 04:16 PM
i got an ipod but the battery crapped out. it's strictly a home stereo now. the samsung is my portable one.

the T9 holds me down. i usually rotate a few albums so i don't need the space. if i'm not listening to an album anymore i take it off and put it in my music folder on the computer. i hated having songs on my ipod that i never listen to. i never use shuffle so they're just sitting there for no reason.

i mainly wanted a smaller device to carry. it has great features that i actually use. i can delete files DIRECTLY from the device, drag and drop (i hate itunes), play video (small screen but crystal clear), great UI and menus, 30hr battery life, you can change the song speed (chipmunk fast or screw music slow), etc.

i think they shit on apple in a lot of areas. if they made a 10-30gig device i'd cop no question.
132503, That's just it..SO MANY players shit on Apple that it's not funny

I don't get it.
I've gone back and forth on these boards for years, sometimes i've rode for Apple, sometimes not. Lately, not.
I have a little Sony flash player i use for the gym. NWS something or another..i got it off Woot one day. I think i posted about it here too. Love it! It has noise canceling headphones..ACTIVE noise canceling, it's small, has sports shuffle etc...thing Apple STILL hasnt gottten down with.

I don't get how it's software pimpin though. Most every MP3 player comes with it's own media management software. I'd feel pretty cheated if i purchased one that didn't.

I'm not down with touch screen.. Hell, my non touch screen gets greasy enough, can't imagine how bad it would be if it were a touch screen.
The D pad is touch sensitive, you drag your finger across and it changes tracks, or controls volume. If you want feedback, you can press it too.

totally pointless for those of us who own mac, can't actually figure out why Microminisofty didn't include mac support.

My iPod is my iPhone and I'm happy with it but am curious about Zunes since I've never seen one yet. I don't even think it's out here in Sweden yet -- which is strange.

That is kinda sucky on MS' part for not making it Mac compatible. I do wonder if that is something they can remedy with a firmware update. Funny thing is, I got my wife a Nano for christmas and she got me a zune lol....

you mean the zune + zune software

like iTunes forces you to tether to an iPod, Zune runs with the Zune Software. They're essentially the same product with different interfaces, both with their positive and negative quirks
132499, Zune media software is a little more advanced than itunes though.

if you make the folder of your windows media library the same as the folder the zune software automatically searches, you can basically use the windows media player to manage your music, which makes tweaking ID tags, a breeze (which was the only real issue i had with the zune software).

Since everyone jumping all over the place with pros and cons...
The most common cons i've heard mentioned are

-No drag and drop
.Name me one player that allows drag and drop that has a non cumbersome, muffled up, intuitive interface.
-No repeat
.Tell me how two clicks to add a song to a quick list and repeat is any different than drilling back to a main menu selecting repeat and then going back to the song
-Weight
.The Zune 80GB is the lightest hard drive based player out. Larger screen even.

Thousands Wait Overnight At Microsoft Stores For Second Generation Zune
December 17, 2007 | Issue 43•51

NEW YORK—In a year that saw the release of such best-selling products as the Motorola RAZR 2 V8 and the wildly popular Casio XD-SW4800 handheld dictionary, no personal electronics product launch was more highly anticipated than the November 13 debut of the second-generation Microsoft Zune mp3 player.

Consumers eagerly line up outside New York City's famous 5th Avenue 24-hour Microsoft Store.
The sleek new Zune, whose record-breaking sales have made the Zune name synonymous with "mp3 player," was so sought-after that thousands formed long lines outside hip, minimalist Microsoft Stores across the country days before the device went on sale. In Midtown Manhattan, the hysteria reached such a fever pitch that some were willing to pay as much as $200 for a spot in line.

"How could you not want one?" said self-described "Microsoft fanatic" Maria Arkin, who, like many others scrambling to be among the first to get their hands on the new Zune, expressed disappointment upon learning that sales were limited to just two units per customer. "It's amazing. There's just nothing else like it on the market."

Arkin added, "Plus, it's small enough to fit in my pocket—right next to my cell phone!"

Even skeptics have found it difficult to deny the Zune's appeal. With its video capability, "squircle"-shaped control pad, Microsoft logo emblazoned on the back, and iconic black earbuds, it has become a must-have item for everyone from high-powered executives to trendy young scenesters. Many consumers consider owning the newest model of Zune to be the most essential status symbol of the past 10 years, hailing it as the hallmark fashion accessory of the so-called "Zune Generation."

"The second-generation Zune has it all," said Brian Lam, editor in chief of Gizmodo, a popular tech blog. "It's got a great design, and the cult of personality that the undeniably charismatic Bill Gates has created with his Microsoft product launches only adds to the Zune's desirability."

Though the Zune continues to dominate the world of personal electronics, technology experts believe it will quickly be overshadowed by the fall 2008 launch of the hotly anticipated new Texas Instruments TI-Nspire graphing calculator.
132916, Microsoft pays good money for press.

I found this post interesting so I read up a bit on the Zune. Can you guys tell me if these issues still exist or if they’ve been handled by firmware updates?

-No EQ settings on the player.
Not TOO big of a deal, but still kinda sucks

-No gapless playback
Wow, that's pretty big.

-No foreign language support (songs with Asian characters show up as squares).
This would suck. I have a bunch of Japanese music with kanji (or is it katakana...?) characters

-Only 22 hours of audio playback compared to the iPod classic’s 45 (according to CNET’s review).
Not TOO big of a deal, but more battery life is always better.

-No Autoplaylists with the Zune software.
Oh, that would suck. I use those a lot.

-No rating of songs with the Zune software.
This would also suck, but without auto playlists, I guess it's pretty useless.

True. To my ears, the fidelity and sound quality is better than my ipod was though. I never used the EQ on that though. The only player i've used EQ on is my little Sony.

I haven't confirmed this. How can I test it? I don't have any mixtapes.

Funny you mention that. I had an import of Groove Theroy that I guess was japanese. The characters showed up on the Zune desktop software, but I think they did come up as squares on the actual Zune. I ended up retagging it so I dont remember now...i dont read japanese and all.

My understanding is that they removed the ratings with the update. Now you can assign it a Heart or Broken heart. Somehow thats supposed to be better than a star rating system that it used to have. Haven't played around with it much yet though. I do believe you can sort by heart or broken heart though.

You have to pick a DAP that suits your needs. Shit that isn't important to some people is extremely important to others, and vice versa. A few of the Zune's shortcomings are things I'm really used to with the iPod.

>>-No gapless playback
>> Wow, that's pretty big.

On the Game Theory album by The Roots, False Media (track 2) and Game Theory (track 3) kinda melt into each other with no gap in the audio. Actually, Game Theory kinda has things like that all throughout...pauses would definitely take away form it.

On Moonlighting by Tanya Morgan, Paper Thin (track 3) and We Be (track for) do the same thing.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that does it, but it's pretty common with hip-hop.

This is pretty big though, as a lot of albums are MADE not to have gaps. I can't imagine listening to Sound Bombing 2 with pauses in between tracks.

But I agree with you overall. I own an ipod too. I rode hard for it too. Now i've encountered something I feel is superior. The Zune hasn't gotten proper shine around these parts lately. Especially since the update. That's the real reason for this post. I appreciate that some folks take a more rational approach to rebuttal.

Ok, tested it last night. Not sure if what i'm hearing is gapless or the way the CD was mastered. I recall ?uest talking about how he mastered it so that it would sound gapless no matter what media you were playing. The pause between tracks is not nearly as dramatic as it was on my ipod though.

Ok,I checked into it..I'm not a big playlist user... playlists work like this.. If you want to, you can simply use Zune desktop to sync only then you can manage all your tagging, playlists, etc in WMP11. The Zune reads from the storage folder of WMP and if there are playlists there, they will sync up.

I know exactly what he's talking about. There is an ever-so-slight pause inbetween track transitions on the Zune, so whereas during the transition of these two tracks there isn't a gap between the two songs, if you listen to it on the Zune you hear a slight gap.

It can be pretty annoying --- try listening to the transition between Nightworks and Arabian Knights off the first Soundbombing album and you'll notice that on the CD there isn't a pause at all between the transition, but on the Zune you'll hear a gap. It completely messes up the flow of the album because damn near the whole album transitions from track-to-track like that without a pause between songs.

You can't chase a marathon runner. The features That make the zune sexy: wifi beaming and whatever the fuck it does, but people like the standard, and it is hard out there for a pimp to replace the ipod. the only way that the zune will ever get to the level of the Ipod is if it does three things:

- Drop it's price point to beat Apple (160 gig zune for 250 or even three would change my mindset by far)

- Play all types of video and audio content (even protected apple files) consumers are fuckin tired of having all types of formats for music and video that they can only use on certain players You give me a zune screen with the apple store, then I would be happy)

- They have to beat apple to some quality idea. The issue with wifi is that it's cool, but few people have the zune, so i have few people to share with so the idea is worthless. Apple is making new moves every year, 30 to 60 to 80 to 160 gb Ipod video, The touch and the the iphone are giving microsoft fits. They just have to be first with the next innovation in this portable music game and ride it to glory. Until then I need to load up more music on my 160 so i am done.

Yall aren't hearing me. With the newest firmware Wifi is more than just sharing tracks with other Zunes. It's already been opened to allow syncing. Now, lets talk firmware upgradability. What other company has taken the bold step of releasing a firmware upgrade to early adopters of the original player? What other company has committed to further development and feature roll out of not only their existing devices, but their future devices? The Zune is a device that can and will continue to be developed. I don't have to worry that with the next device release, my current one will be obsolete. How many ipods have you folks gone through because something newer and more feature packed was released? It's insane to think about. Yeah, Mac makes a good product, but mack is also abusing their customers by releasing newer and better product year after year forcing them to purchase new product to enjoy the newest features. Folks need to peep game...cause Apple is playing a lot folks..playin em HARD.

154200, Support of HD radio, satellite, and AM would be a start.
Posted by Kuahmel, Thu Jun-19-08 03:48 AM
I'd like to be able to still rock my sports talk when I get out of the car.

And HD radio should be beyond car stereos.

Maybe decent broadcast digital TV transmissions that don't rely on the Web.

Go all solid state drives on the next generation, and offer drive sizes that aren't exactly the same as the iPod (how about 100 or 200gb?)

Wireless modulation (to do away with needing plugs of any kind to hear in your car or on your home stereo)

And of course definitely get every O.E. and aftermarket car stereo manufacture on board about integrated control, as well as Mac compatibility (which would win more market share versus the Apple).

Doesn't have to compete with every "cute" feature Apple comes with, and really shouldn't IMO...it should do different things that make it stand out. While Microsoft can do anything it wants and compete with whoever, however; Zune the product should IMO focus on being the greatest bang for the buck when it comes to entertainment.

Other than having FM radio what does the Zune have over the Ipod? If I don't have a wireless connection at home what good is the sync feature for me? Is it easy to convert alot of different type of video files on it?

Why is better than an IPod?

I bought my girl a Ipod Nano for Christmas and I see why their so popular but I don't what to but up the cash for an 80GB version if something else out on the market is vastly better. To sum all of this up...what makes it so great? Thanks.

If you dont have a wireless network, you won't get much use outta the wireless sync feature right now. I haven't tried to convert video files on it yet. I can't imagine it's any more difficult or any easier than the iPod though. There are other players (such as Archos) that can probably handle video conversion and compatibility waaaay better than both Zune and Ipod.

I bought my wife a Nano for Christmas too. She's a runner and that Nike+ interface is pretty much the greatest most useful workout feature i've seen on an MP3 player to date. The Nano shuts the flash based Zunes down no doubt just for that feature alone. So yeah, if you talking Nano's then get the Nano over the 4GB & 8GB flash based Zunes. Real talk. Now if you talking 80GB ipod vs 80GB Zune, then as i've listed here, I feel like the Zune is a better device for all the reasons I've stated in here. They are both the same price, so price won't be a factor. It all boils down to interface, features, look and feel.

The zen jukebox is an older technology, but it does sort "selected music" (i.e., quicklist) according to how you added it. and you can remove stuff from your quicklist individually or in groups. Plus if you like your quicklist you can save it as a playlist on your device, without having to use your computer.

Grrr (c) Tatiana

Do you find yourself making playlists on the go very often? I guess I don't because I have just waay too much music on here to sort through and make one, unless i just bought a few new albums or something.
Did you get the 80GB/ 30GB or the flash based one?

What happens is that I get a craving for a certain group of, say, albums, and I put them all on my "quicklist" and then I end up saving it as a playlist so that I don't have to put it all back together later. Then I go to the gym and put on a different playlist, one that I figured out (on the go) for the gym.

Actually, when I think of it, the vast majority of my playlists were made on the device and not on the computer. The only exceptions to that are the playlists that are actually the tracks that I burned to cd's for friends.

I'm way way more device-oriented than computer-oriented. I have a feeling that the choices made by Microsoft in designing this item were made in large part with marketing in mind. If you have to go to the proprietary website in order to sort through your music, you'll buy from them or leave your footprints here and there, you know what I mean.

Creative's software is not web-based, and I like that.

Nah, I don't think Microsoft is out for marketing as much as they are trying to drive and promote Zune as a socially driven device. I'd put Apple more in the marketing camp than the Zune. I'm not sure if you've had a chance to sort through the Zune desktop software enough yet. It is in no way a website driven software. The only website portion is related to the Social. All the track/music/video organization and sorting is all done through the desktop software. Proprietary yes, but so is just about every other mp3 player software.

don't forget the marketplace.

I think if you compare Zune and iPod, you're probably at parity.

But Zune to creative?

I would have stayed with Creative if they'd made one big enough.

You, on the other hand, probably don't care how much space is on your device, because you never look through it all except on your desktop.

133791, My first mp3 player was a Creative. I forget the model.
Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Jan-15-08 07:01 AM

This was circa 1999. It was silver and only had 128mb of memory lol. I STILL have it too. And it is one of the best sounding mp3 players i've ever owned. I am familiar with the Creative desktop. In fact more than 70% of my mp3 collection was tagged using their desktop software. So yeah, i'm a fan of Creative's products.
But hold tight, you never know, the playlist options might very well be modified with the next firmware release for the Zune.
So, do you regret your purchase?

I look through the music on my device, but generally I use it while driving, so I either select by genre or album and i play in shuffle mode. Or I just shuffle all songs and don't touch it for a week. But i've never been big on playlists, so yeah, I can't really call it one way or another on that angle. Since you are big on them, i'll take your word on it.
133932, I remain confident that I will grow to love it

For one 90 day period, I had a Zen Micro. On the 91st day, it stopped working (of course it had a 90 day warranty). I still vaguely miss a couple of the features that it had that my zen jukebox didn't have. So there will probably always be a little regret for the features from the jukebox that aren't on the zune.

I've found things I like a lot, though, like the ability to link to an artist on the device from a song that's currently playing.

Do you know of a way, other than by just letting the player reset itself, to go immediately to what's playing?

Let's say you've got the device on shuffle all songs and you're fooling around on it adding stuff to a quick list, and a new song comes on in the shuffle and you go, "what is this?" What's the *fastest* way to find out what is now playing on your device?

On the jukebox, from the home page there are links to "selected music" (quicklist) and "now playing".

"A new Search function works slightly different than the previous one introduced in last year's 5.5G iPod. The Search field lets you enter items by letter using the clickwheel, and refined results popup as letters are entered. At any time, a click drops you into the search results, with list both albums and songs, as well as videos. It might take a moment to realize that entered letters can be deleted with a back click. Letters are entered by spinning the clickwheel and clicking on the letter. There's no way to search for numbers, so if you were looking for Feist's "1234," you're out of luck. There's also no way to enter a space.

However, since you are searching your own limited amount of content, you can probably manage to find what you're looking for with just a letter or two; even two letters breaks down a couple thousand items into a few dozen results to scan through. As with the 5G iPods, alphabetical letters pop up as you rapidly run though listings, making it easy to find needles in the 8 GB haystack even without performing a search. "
134027, wow that's ugly

I'd probably want to drop kick my ipod if I had to use search like that. The click wheel is far too sensitive for that mess.

Posted by janey, Tue Jan-15-08 01:50 PM
How do I resolve the issue of albums reading as "various artists"? This is true in really just way the fuck too many cases. I'm okay with the idea that the album gets listed repeatedly for every time the artist listing has a slight change (like NaS, NaS ft. Lauryn Hill, NaS ft. ....) even though I don't like it, but what the hell is going on that some do that and some just dump into "various artists"?

Also, aren't you the one who told me that it could create auto playlists for you, like even creating lists of music you listen to most frequently at specific times of day?

I trusted you, man.

That ties back to Gracenote and the various databases that MP3 Tagging software uses to retrieve artist/album information when you rip a CD. Even when you get tracks from other people they could be tagged improperly from jump. The best way i've found to remedy it is the manage my tags manually. I use Windows Media Player for that most of the time. I've heard other folks mention other programs that do a better job at album tagging. What I think i'm finding with the Zune is that some artists show up as both Various Artist AND within the actual artists catagory. Give me some specific albums and i'll see if I have them and they show up as Various on my Zune.

Nah, that wasn't me that told you about auto playlists though. Remember, i'm not big on playlists lol. I do recall that the Windows Media Player 11 has some sort of Auto Playlist function built into though.

don't put ALL your trust into me, i'm just a man lol....

Quality is under Talib Kweli and not under Various Artists on my Zune.
Yeah, funny you mention that, I used to use the Creative software to change my tags when I had an ipod too.

You're not stuck with the gracenote settings though. There is a setting within the Zune desktop software that's something to the effect of "Update Artist Information Automatically" or something like that. You need to uncheck that box. You want to prevent Zune desktop from updating your artist information and tags. I'm at work so I don't have the software installed on this computer. I'll verify the setting when I get home though. But yeah, Gracenote SUCKS. I've never been happy with any of the automatic tagging databases. They put stuff in the wrong Genre all the time.

The short of it though is that MS didn't incorporate a good way to edit tags in the Zune desktop software...yet. I use Windows Media Player 11 to rip CDS and manage my MP3 tags manually. I usually let Gracenote fill in the basic stuff, then I go in and override and revise the stuff that it messed up. Typically it's genre and the whole Various Artists thing. Hope that helps.

"automatically update album art and media information" even though I had it set to only replace missing information (I *like* the album art). It's kind of messed up if I have to choose between having the album covers and having it sort properly.

I have to tell you that I totally don't understand you on the Windows Media Explorers thing.

Also, all of my cds were ripped using the creative technology and they were all tagged to my satisfaction. And they were all imported as is from my hard drive.

That's the setting I have. Make sure the "Replace All Media Information" box is unchecked.

Sorry for the confusion. What I'm referring to is Windows Media Player. The software that typically automatically opens whenever you play any music. I think they are on Version 10 or 11 now. Yeah, version 11 is for Vista only I think. Check out this tutorial, it breaks it down better than I can
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/howto/AlbumInfo_how_to.aspx
That should give you a good basis on the ins and outs of tagging your songs. Creative, Itunes, Media Player etc. all use the same database to automatically identify your music. What Creative did better was provide you with a really simple interface for altering the media tags and artist information. You could very well continue to use the Creative desktop to tag your music and everything.

Geez. Sorry to say, fam, but I don't really see why you'd want a Zune and not an iPod. Not from this post at least...

-Gapless playback
-iTunes lets you edit the fuck outta your tags
-More variety in the lineup (bigger hard drives, smaller devices, phone+DAP devices, etc.)
-More accessories work with it (you could just buy those fancy magnet headphones)
-Able to be used as a portable hard drive

Honestly, not much at all since it first came out lol... Like I said though, it ain't really an issue for me. I totally understand that a lot of folks are hung up on that, I ain't knocking them for being dumbasses about something so insignificant. The gap isn't that pronounced on Zunes, point blank. Senseless consumers, more concerned about having the latest Mac device more than anything else. I've already touched on this though. Millions of customers doesn't necessarily = better product. Janey even owned an ipod before and took that shit back...lol...

Dude, that's my whole point. Why do I need to transfer pics from my camera to my media player?? I got a 4gb SD Card on my camera son! When will I every NOT be close enough to a computer to get them pics off the SD card and transfer them to my Zune if I need them on there? That is a device that really had no point of existance. I have fewer songs than you, but it was still faster and easier for me to search by name.

Not being able to scroll in a circle is a drag, too. If I want something off Wooden Leather, I scroll all the way down. On my jukebox, if I wanted something off 8 Diagrams, I would just scroll down a little further and the list would restart.

On the Zune, I go all the way back up to the top. Makes me dizzy.

The features are different. There are definitely some nice things that I didn't have before. But they still feel like unnecessary extras (Video? Pictures? That screen is too small for my old eyes. Radio? Who needs a radio? lol), and the things I'm missing feel like necessities.

I guess it's more or less personal preference. I'm waay faster searching through songs on my Zune than I was on my Ipod. Mainly because I can just flick it and the list continues to scroll depending on how fast I flick it. (you did know you could do this right?) My thumbs used to get hella tired and annoyed doing that circle mess on the Ipod.

I have two versions of The One, by Cee-Lo, ft Jazzee Pha & TI

One is on Closet Freak
The other is on Cee Lo Green Is The Soul Machine.

Closet Freak is clean.
Cee Lo Green... is explicit.

On my desktop, in I-Tunes, when I open the albums separately I can see both versions. I click on properties & see that they are indeed under different filenames.

However, when I search ALL songs, only one version shows up. And yeah, it's the clean version otherwise I wouldn't care or maybe even have noticed.

This despite the fact that I inadvertently uploaded Get Back by Little Brother twice and all the songs on both copies show up in the All Songs list.

WHAT THE HELL?

Posted by FLUIDJ, Tue Jan-15-08 06:49 PM
Is that either the track is in a format that Zune can't read or that its a protected file or that it's tagged wrong. I'll mess around tonight and see if i can replicate it.

134162, Were you able to straighten it out by messing with the tags?
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Jan-16-08 12:35 PM
I got nothing :( sorry.
134165, this particular issue I resolved in a really roundabout way
Posted by janey, Wed Jan-16-08 12:43 PM
I saved the version that I wanted to a playlist. So now I can access it using that method. But frankly, I consider that a pretty wack resolution. And it really makes me wonder what ELSE isn't showing up. Evidently I have to keep my creative software loaded until all this is resolved.

And I still don't know how to mess with tags on zune. I mean, if I had the shit tagged properly on creative, and it came to zune wrong, then how is transferring all the data to windows media player, retagging it, and syncing to zune going to change anything?

~ ~ ~

Grrr (c) Tatiana
134172, Yeah, I think what might have to happen is..
Posted by FLUIDJ, Wed Jan-16-08 12:51 PM
That you clear your library from Zune. Then check your tags. Then before you sync your library back into Zune & Zune desktop, make sure that the Update album information automatically box isn't checked.
I'm wondering if that was checked by default and the Zune took it upon itself to retag everything as it saw fit?

I will admit that I'm irritated that I have to go back through so much older stuff to fix something that shouldn't have been an issue.

But also I should say that the longer I use the zune, the happier I am with it.

One of my biggest issues was with the whole quicklist thing. That stems from the fact that the technology I was used to used a "selected music" field that I thought was the same as "quicklist." So I thought that if I switched from my quicklist to a different playlist or a separate album or song or whatever, I would lose the quicklist. That not being the case, I've calmed down a lot.

Still doing some research on this and one question I have is about the Zune software compared to Itunes. I keep reading about how Zune software slows down your pc and is not reliable. I know Itunes is not the greatest but what's the verdict on the Zune software?

iTunes persistantly annoyed me with it's resource hogging ways. Zune desktop seems to affect performance in the same way that Windows Media Player 10 does. Little to no adverse affects for me. Where did you read about that issue?

It's down to the wire and I just want to make sure I'm making the right choice. I also did not receive your inbox or email that you send so any extra info can help out. Thanks alot for answering my questions.

yeah fucker, i got a zune, the "bulky" one. and i love it.

if u are gonna compare the ipod to the zune, then do just that.

u fuck things up when u start the whole zune vs. ipod, iphone, ipod-touch, ipod-orgasm, etc. arguments.

*** but on to the steak & potatoes... ***

imo, ipods are best-suited for casual users, if i gave my mom/sister a zune for x-mas, i'd might as well blow their brains out in succession.

i compare it to the difference between limewire and soulseek. are u tryna d/l the new soulja boy remix, or tryna find somebody w/a copy of casual: the fear itself? one is prettier and so easy a caveman can do it, but which is more effective? it depends.

i like my zune b/c i convert all my music to .wma/ .wmv format (a format non-techies barely know exist). sorry, i don't like buying hard drives. i think i'll sacrifice an unnoticeable amount of sound quality to make my files 3-5x smaller. dont need to hear dr. dre scratch his nuts in the studio. that's why the 30gb vs. 80gb argument has been irrelevant to me from day-1. i can put more music & video than ALL you ipod fuckers, if we talkin' .wma vs. .mp3.

up until recently, the ipod line wasnt fuckin' w/ the zune's screen size, radio option, and the user interface is still kickin' apple's ass, imo.

and i'm tired of hearin' these wi-fi/ marketplace vs. itunes arguments anyway, cause if ur buyin' music for any other reason than to support ur favorite a/o up-and-coming artists, ur pretty much a fuckin' embecile in my eyes anyway. and i ain't got time to be wirelessly sendin' u a song. These ain't pokemon tradin' cards, GO D/L THAT SHIT YOUR-GATDAMN-SELF

but hey, honestly, if wasn't a broke nigga tryna make a come-up & i had a cushy job that allowed for me to just buy said album off itunes, i'da been grabbed one. sorry i've always been the kinda dude that would rather roll with the pair of timbs (zune) that i can rock erryday, than the cat that would spend his last on them fly-ass jordans (ipod) that only go w/1 outfit...

p.s. -- apple be pimpin' these hoes.

I gotta apologize to anybody that went and copped a Zune off the strength of this post...i feel i've done a disservice to the community with my antics. :( My bad folks...edranks on me ok?

But yeah, my biggest bugs have been with ID tags. The Zune desktop software just don't work well with tags man...I've been very very meticulous with tagging using Media Monkey and other software to no avail...Zune STILL wants to stick my One Way collection under Al Hudson or Alicia Myers! I can't rely on it to keep up with my podcasts, especially video podcasts. I'm dissappointed with the sheer lack of third party accessories out there for this damn thing..it's like either everyone is scared to touch it, or MS isn't providing folks the data they need to make 3rd party stuff...i dunno what it is, but it sucks.
Also there is a bug with my battery now!! Shit drains like a sink full of holes!

148456, I wonder about that id3 tagging
Posted by spenzalii, Wed Apr-30-08 11:26 AM
Sounds like the same thing WMP does with mp3s. It's tagging is atrocious. I'm going thru my music collection now trying to get anything I ripped with that straight. I'm guessing the Zune software uses the same zany tagging system.

Oh well, join the evil empire. We all will be assimilated. I;m just waiting for a higher capacity Touch before I cop. I'm getting a classic in the meantime, as my 3 year old ipod Photo is full.
148464, nah, WMP11 is EXCELLENT with tags

The Zune software won't even let you alter tags. It just uses some strange method of reading the file name to organize your tracks. And the messed up thing is that I had it set to NOT update track information...but it took it upon itself to organize them the way it saw fit. And once you add an album to the sync list, it creates a separate file in your system folder and refers to THAT data file for all future organization of your tracks...so basically if you edit the tags and fix them, Zune software is STILL gonna refer to the OLD data file that it has tucked away deep into the system that you pretty much cant access... Common sense tells most "Hey, why dont you just uninstall the Zune software, fix all your tags and then reinstall?" heh...did that..MULTIPLE times...but that data file that Zune creates is buried so deep into the OS and SYstem files that #1 Uninstalling the software doesn't erase that data file, #2 that data file is really hidden and I can't find it #3 when you reinstall the Zune software, sure enough it finds that system file again and repeats the same errors!! The shit is NUTS!!

Yeah, i was already an ipod owner, i decided to go Zune with the higher capacity and larger screen.

I was going back and forth between the 160GB classic and the 32GB Touch. The screen size and the other features of the Touch won me over. 32GB Is just the right size for ease of browsing I believe now that i've experienced using an 80GB capacity player..

Microsoft turned a few heads at its Advance '08 advertising conference by announcing a type of ads for its Zune platform, in addition to those web, TV and Xbox "branding experiences" it already delivers. The primary method described merely involved corporate sponsorships of celebrity playlists, with the "ad" being consigned to branding on that musician's Social card -- and you'd have to have friended the musician to see any of it at all. Apocalyptic stuff, eh? Microsoft also promises to keep the ads appropriate for the audience, so we're not going to start panicking just yet, but the first DAP builder to make us sit through a minute of ads every time we try to sync with our computer is sure score the (oh, hey, thanks for the $100, Microsoft!) scorn and vitriol love and affection of its customers for years to come.

For one simple reason, with the Zune Pass Subscription, I can see what my Zune friends top songs are, and most recently listened to songs are, and they are actually synced with my Zune automatically. So I can listen to them immediately without waiting to go home and search for the song, download it, and sync it.

Also, no ads.

I bet if folks played around with the Zune.net website a little and the Zune desktop software, they would find that it's a lot better than itunes and Last FM

Article:
REDMOND, Wash., Nov 20, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Zune, Microsoft Corp.'s digital music and entertainment service, today announced landmark agreements with major and independent music labels to bring significant new value to the subscription music model. The Zune Pass subscription service currently gives consumers on-demand access to millions of tracks for $14.99 per month. Starting today subscribers will also get to select 10 tracks per month to keep and add them to their permanent collection (an estimated $10 value).
Agreements have been signed between Microsoft and EMI Music, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group, as well as independent distributors INgrooves, Independent Online Distribution Alliance and The Orchard. The Orchard delivers digital music, video and brand services globally, and represents labels including Barsuk Records (Nada Surf) and Fania Records (Hector Lavoe, Celia Cruz). IODA represents labels including Arts & Crafts (Broken Social Scene, The Stills) and Ghostly International (Matthew Dear, School of Seven Bells). The new enhanced subscription model came about as a result of close collaboration with all of these companies.
Zune Pass subscribers will have the added benefit of retaining digital rights management (DRM)-free MP3 tracks from Sony BMG and UMG, in addition to MP3 tracks from EMI Music, Warner Music Group and a large portion of the independent music labels. With the addition of tracks from UMG and Sony BMG, Zune will soon offer over 90 percent of its music in the MP3 format.
"The way people consume music has changed. With the shift to digital from CDs, it is more challenging than ever to offer the right mix of deep content, music discovery and economic value," said Chris Stephenson, general manager of global marketing for Zune at Microsoft. "People want the freedom to listen to whatever they want across millions of songs, combined with the confidence that they can keep their favorite tracks forever."
From its inception, Zune has bet on the power of subscription, not only as a consumption model but also as a way to highlight the music discovery features central to the Zune experience and the PC platform. The Zune service gives consumers convenient and unlimited access to the music they want, and also connects them to other music fans and expert sources to help them find the music they will love. The new enhancements to the Zune Pass subscription service offer unprecedented value for all music fans.
"The subscription model continues to redefine the digital music landscape, and today's announcement is great news for consumers, artists and labels," said Simon Renshaw, chief executive officer of Strategic Artist Management (representing Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert, Everclear, Tila Tequila and Aly & AJ). "This breakthrough offer makes it easier than ever for consumers to discover new music and will encourage deeper engagement in the digital music space, and that is good for the entire industry."
A Zune Pass gives a subscriber access to millions of tracks that can be streamed or downloaded from a PC or directly from a Zune device when in a wireless hot spot.(1) Downloaded music can be shared among up to three PCs and three Zune devices. In addition to unlimited downloads, consumers now also get to select 10 free tracks per month to keep and add to their permanent collection. These tracks can be burned to a CD or moved to other devices even if their subscription ends.
Since the launch of the Zune portable media player and music service two years ago, Zune has invested in improving the subscription model and the discovery experience it brings to life. With the recent launch of Zune 3.0, Microsoft built additional value into the Zune Pass offering by adding new features focused on music discovery and personalizing the music experience for each user:
-- Mixview. Customers can select an artist, album or listener from the Zune Social online music community to activate a dynamic visual mosaic of related music and listeners. With each click, users can take the view in a new direction. Mixview works with users' current collection of music, in addition to tracks and albums from across the Zune Marketplace.
-- Zune Channels. Subscribers can explore dozens of channels programmed by genre; explore sources such as Billboard Hot 100, The FADER magazine and KEXP radio; or access themed channels, like fitness, to get a steady stream of new music added to their collection automatically. Zune will even create custom channels for each user, based on favorite artists and genres.
-- Personal Picks. Now the Zune software learns what kind of music users like and makes personal recommendations. Each week Zune suggests artists, albums and tracks based on the music each person has been listening to, as well as channels they might enjoy and listeners like them in the Zune Social.
To give people a chance to experience the Zune Pass subscription, Zune is offering a free, 14-day trial to all new customers.(2) More information is available at http://www.zune.net/free.

But basically when I wrote this post, it was at a time when Zune was getting shat on real tuff. I appreciate all of the media players out there. My first was a Creative Zen. The ORIGINAL one circa 1999. I thought I was stuntin with a 128mb MMC. lol! But I still maintain that the sound quality on that thing shits on all modern media players. I still have it. I fired it up a couple of weeks ago when i was going through some old junk in my closet just to see if it still worked, it did. And it sounded waay better then my ipod touch and almost as good as my Zune. So yeah, i'll always be a fan of Creative's products.

I entertained the Cowons too. But that passed....not sure why...I think it was probably the availability or something, and when I saw the Zune Pass, I knew i'd want that.

had the jawn that was aluminum cased, ish was a thorobred for the year & a half I had it (hard drive finally crapped out :( ). 20gigs tho of music was my utopia back in college. Then was the even more impressive Rio Karma which also had 20gigs, crossfader + sound almost as nice as the zen & probably one of THE most impressive portables I ever dealt with to this day in terms of music playback, sadly the HD going bad in that eventually had me run to flash players thus my current boo the Cowon D2 ^_^

Never was a big fan of apple tho since I toyed around with them enough to know they're not gonna suit my nitpickyness... but to be honest, them 32GB touches is a helluva temptation if I was to ever look for a new player.

Aight, I'll clean up my poop I slinged @ this thread hahaha.

Bought a 120gb Zune today and I have to say I'm extremely pleased, wasn't sure what to think but after only hours of use I think its a thousand times better than my iPod video/classic.

Zune has come full circle.

Gen 1 Device - Solid & check
Gen 2 Devices - Solid & check
Gen 3 Devices - Solid & check
gen 4 Devices - Likely to be solid and even more check. hitting from all angles now with a focused plan of attack. Kin for the Kiddies; Win 7 for the adults; Zune HD keeping the party live for all those in between. Zune will shed it's earthly form and ascend to the clouds...Prophesy fulfilled.
Maybe not the iPod killer...but pretty much the only viable alternative that makes any sense in todays market.

Posted by d., Mon Mar-14-11 07:24 PM
which means most people will continue using iTunes for the foreseeable future

that's scary

that said, there has been some speculation that MS would kill off the
Zune hardware, rename the software and include it on a re-branded device,
perhaps "xbox" or "Live." that still won't challenge the iPod's supremacy,
but could at least give MS a chance to sell devices to kids who aren't
old enough to buy phones

period...I guess they just want to be known as a software company primarily. Which ultimately, is likely the best move for them. I'd hate to see the Zune brand killed completely. Perhaps it's infamy....but it's still perhaps one of the most recognizable brands out there.

I doubt that the service will be killed off though.
