Halo 3 Review
The fight is finished. Anyone got a cigarette?
by Hilary Goldstein

September 23, 2007 - My father once told me, "Never start a fight you don't intend to finish." Master Chief's pappy must have said something similar to him long before John-117 became a Spartan, because in Halo 3, the iconic action hero does indeed finish the fight. There is no cliffhanger ending that will have you screaming at your television, no doubting that this is Chief's tale and everyone else is along for the ride, and no question that it is a worthy conclusion to the most successful trilogy in videogame history. But just like that girl you dated in college, Halo 3 has some issues. Don't' worry; the good far outweighs the bad. This is Halo 3, and it is indeed the game you've been waiting for the past three years.

When last we left Master Chief, he was headed towards Earth, determined to stop the Prophet of Truth and his cadre of Brutes from destroying the universe in a blaze of zealotry. Cortana had been captured by the Gravemind, a disgusting creature intimately tied to the Flood. The Arbiter and his Elites, once bitter enemies of humankind had made an uneasy truce in order to conquer a greater evil. Frankly, things didn't look so hot for Earth and its inhabitants. For three years fans have been waiting to find out what comes next. Most won't be disappointed, as the story eschews some of the ambiguity of Halo 2 and tells a more straightforward narrative. Events play out like a sci-fi action blockbuster.

Lost, though, is the intriguing side-story of the Arbiter and his Elites. The focus is clearly (and perhaps deservedly) on Master Chief. That means in the single-player campaign you will be Chief and Chief only. The Arbiter is just a dude with a weird mandible and a cool sword. While keeping players locked in as Master Chief is a wise decision on Bungie's part, it's a shame that the Arbiter's story fades so far into the background. That's not to say I want to spend half the adventure following the Arbiter and leaving Chief to twiddle his thumbs, but it would have been nice to see such a prominent storyline from Halo 2 have more weight in the cinematic telling of Halo 3.

Clearly Bungie was listening to the criticisms of Halo 2. Not only is Chief in the driver's seat once more, but the environments are varied enough that each level feels distinct. Though you will still need to backtrack in a few areas, it's not as tedious as in previous iterations. The level's in Halo 3 lend to spectacular pacing that weaves from close-quarters, intense battles with Chief and a few soldiers, to more epic arenas. It does feel as if the marine presence is lighter than it should be, but there's enough chaos in the field to at least make it appear as if Master Chief is part of something grander.

You can rip a turret from its mounting and take it with you.
Most of the nine levels are hunky-dory, but the penultimate chapter is so bad, just thinking about it puts a rotten taste in my mouth. It's the kind of level where, if playing through Halo 3 again, I might just stop once I reached it and not bother finishing the skirmish, much less the fight.

It should be noted that the difficulty level is a bit out of whack, though done purposefully. Bungie has to service an enormous casual crowd who (let's face it) suck at games. There are millions who will play Halo 3 and only Halo 3 this year. All they want is to finish the fight and take a nap on the couch. But at the same time, there are an equal number of hardcore gamers who have become immensely skilled at Halo over the past six years. For these folks, the single-player version of Heroic and Legendary difficulties has been ratcheted up just a tad. Many will immediately jump into Normal difficulty, and never see the more aggressive AI that calls in reinforcements and makes better use of its weapons and equipment. Frankly, Normal on Halo 3 is too easy for the average gamer and that lack of challenge may actually bore some.

Do yourself a favor and test your meddle on the harder difficulties right off the bat. Once again, the Halo franchise utilizes some excellent AI that shouldn't be missed. The Brutes, now the primary focus for your aggression, have a distinct hierarchy and their actions are generally dictated by rank. The Brutes also make liberal use of the new equipment system. By pressing X you can deploy one of several different pieces of equipment that offer a momentary offensive or defensive advantage. You'll often enter a fracas and see a Brute deploy a Bubble Shield (a transparent dome invulnerable to gunfire) or a Regenerator that creates a green cloud which continually heals those within its radius. By their nature, the Brutes are aggressors and can be coaxed from the safety these beneficial pieces of equipment provide. While I wouldn't go so far as to say no two battles are alike, you will certainly illicit some different responses depending on the actions you take.

The enemy AI is generally solid, but the same can't be said for your teammates. It's been said that the world would be doomed without Master Chief. After seeing the other marines in action, that makes a lot of sense. The AI drivers are less like marines and more like Mr. Magoo; support troops are just fodder for the Brutes; and the Arbiter makes me question why the Elites were ever feared in the original Halo. Let's get the Arbiter clear. He's the bad ass "Chief" of the Elites. He should be able to handle his own. In the campaign, the Arbiter and Master Chief are BFF. If you play alone, the AI takes control of the Arbiter and allows him to tag along. Enjoy watching your supposed equal getting shot in the face repeatedly and generally making himself utterly useless. What is the point of sticking you with an AI compatriot if all he's good at is respawning?

While Heroic and Legendary single-player offer a good challenge, the same can't be said for co-op. A decent Halo player can get through the campaign alone on Heroic in 10-13 hours. Four decent Halo players can burn through Legendary in 4-5 hours easily. Unlike Halo 2, you aren't penalized for having a teammate die. As long as you aren't amidst a swarm of enemies, your dead buddy will respawn, whereas in Halo 2 if either player died, you were forced to restart from the last checkpoint. But don't worry, Bungie has set up an interesting system to add a bit of challenge and replayability to co-op for those who don't want to be able to obliterate the enemy with ease.

A few truly adventurous souls discovered that there were skulls hidden in the levels of Halo 2. Those skulls were not only hard to find, but often hard to reach. And they could only be acquired in Legendary. The skulls make a return for Halo 3, but have been re-imagined so as to be more accessible to gamers and to make replaying Halo 3 more interesting. The skulls (most of which can be found at Normal, Heroic, and Legendary difficulty), can be activated before a level to increase the intrigue. Most of the skulls make things a lot tougher. One removes your HUD and reticule, another empowers enemies with incredible grenade skills. Some, however, are just for fun. The Grunt Party skull, for example, offers confetti celebrations for head shots. Throwing a fiesta for popping Grunts is an excellent way to assuage a hangover. Well done, Bungie.

The skulls play a role in the new optional scoring system. In co-op you can turn on scoring to earn points for kills and other key actions, allowing you to compete for the best score against your teammates. Ultimately, your Metascore doesn't mean a whole lot, except to your ego. Still, both Halo and Halo 2 are games that people continue to play to this day. And it's the little extras, like the Metascore, that add longevity. Even when you've finished the fight, you'll want to start it all over again. Especially if it means jockeying with your buddy (either online or offline) for a chance at bragging rights.

The meat of Halo 3 is its multiplayer. Let's be honest with one another: There's nothing Bungie could do to make everyone happy. And since it's tough enough for me to be ensure my own happiness, I can't really address the individual concerns of the millions who will hop online from September 25, 2007 and play through September 25, 2010. So let's talk about what makes me happy. Halo 3 strikes a nice middleground between the the multiplayer of Halo 1 and Halo 2. For the most part you get the best of both worlds.

The battle rifle has become the default kick-ass weapon of the Halo universe, the M16 of the 26th century. But there are few weapons that, in the right hands, can't put someone to death. There are a few casualties to the tweaks made to weapons. The submachine guns are pretty much obsolete next to the more powerful (and cool) Brute Spikers. And all guns still fall short of the power of a well-placed punch to the back of someone's skull.

One of the more surprising improvements falls to the Energy Sword. Less prevalent in the campaign, the Energy Sword has a new twist in multiplayer. If two opponents swing swords at the same time, the two will clash, momentarily stunning one another, but leaving both alive. It then becomes a furious battle to see who can get in the killer strike as the two clang swords in a clumsy form of swashbuckling. A quick-jab strike with the melee button can often result in a win in such contests. While it's not Soul Calibur, it adds enough of a wrinkle to make Energy Swords seem fresh again.

Several swank new weapons have also been added to the arsenal. There's the powerful Spartan Laser, which can practically cut Warthogs in two; the Ruthian Gravity Hammer, which allows you to swat vehicles to the other side of the map; and the aforementioned Spikers, that, when dual-wielded, can bring a quick death to enemies at close range. While all of the new weapons are fun, one stands out. There really is nothing quite like seeing a Spartan walk through a door toting the hefty flamethrower. If you're online and hear a dulcet-toned IGN editor ask, "How you like your ribs," prepare to be barbecued.

The Gravity Hammer and Spikers can feel overpowering at times, but there are limitations to all of the weapons in Halo 3. If you're sick of being knocked 30 feet in the air by a Gravity Hammer, keep your distance from the guy who talks softly and carries a big stick. Besides, balancing weapons doesn't mean they are all equal. It means there is a cost for power -- usually in aim, or recoil, or range.

Really, the multiplayer boils down to one question: Is it fun? Yes. It's a lot of fun. And that's all Bungie needed to do. Create a multiplayer that's fun and addictive and that will satisfy the majority, even if it doesn't necessarily please the vocal minority.

Also added to the mix are some new vehicles. Bungie didn't go overboard by inundating Halo 3 with too many new rides, but there are a few sweet ones. The best of the bunch is the Brute Chopper. If the Fonz followed the Prophet of Truth, this is the bike he would ride. It's fast, maneuverable, and very deadly. It is perhaps more powerful than it should be, but when a vehicle is this cool, you almost need it to be king of the battlefield. The bad guys don't get all the fun toys. The UNSC Marines are given access to the Hornet, a futuristic VTOL aircraft that's likely to see limited use in multiplayer, but is still fun to toy around with. And I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my personal favorite: The Mongoose. This two-person dirt bike has no offensive capabilities, but it can drive your opponents nuts, thanks to its speed. There's nothing quite like driving circles around the enemy while mocking them.

Halo 3 ships with eleven multiplayer maps, though more are expected through downloadable content over the next few years. This is the series' strongest collection of maps to date. There's an excellent variance not only in range, but in layout. The majority of the maps service both long-ranged and close-ranged combat. While larger, more open maps -- such as the desert-themed Sandtrap -- offer the chance for snipers to get in their licks, those who prefer to get their kills up close will find it's possible to stay out of the open and clean up with the shotty. Snowbound and Isolation are both examples of maps that have open upper levels, but more confined subterranean areas.

If you don't dig the layout of a particular map, you can make some adjustments with the Forge. This new addition to the Halo series will keep these eleven maps fresh for years. While you can't alter the geometry of the level, you can make any other adjustments you wish in the Forge. On your own, you can hop into any map using The Forge and rearrange the placement of objects, weapons, power-ups, spawn points, and objectives. You can also access a Counter Strike-style menu and spend money to drop new vehicles, equipment, objects, and more anywhere you like in the map. Then you can save the new map you've created and upload it to Bungie.net for others to check out.

But the Forge offers much more than just some map-editing tools. You can also play games in the Forge while the map is being edited. When you decide to edit, your player transforms into a monitor (a la Guilty Spark). Change to the monitor and zip away from a firefight. Or buy yourself a rocket launcher and drop back in the middle of a fight ready to blow away the competition. Depending on the settings you choose for The Forge, you could potentially have a dozen players manipulating the surroundings. Perhaps you'll form teams of two, where one person plays the monitor, dropping supplies for the other player. Or you could have the host act as a sort of Dungeon Master, changing the location of items as a Slayer match roles on. There are near limitless possibilities. You don't even have to fight to enjoy the Forge.

As a prime example, four editors from competing websites met to test out the Forge recently. At first, we spent some time fragging one another and learning nifty ways to manipulate the system to gain the upper hand on our opponents. But within an hour, we were joining forces to create the biggest pyrotechnics show ever witnessed in Halo. We stacked every possible explosive, then discovered a way to cause one canister to respawn in the air, falling into the pile every 30 seconds to create a spectacular explosive display. The result was a repeating series of massive explosions, which created a unique new environmental danger during firefights.

If you take the rich gametype customization (as previously seen in Halo and Halo 2) and then add the Forge into the mix, you can see how Halo 3's multiplayer has a near limitless number of permutations. While the casual fan may not find much interest in building their own versions of maps and gametypes, this will keep some of the more serious gamers playing Halo 3 for years without getting bored. And, again, all of this can be quickly uploaded so that others can check it out. The online elements of Halo 3 are above and beyond anything we've seen previously in a console game.

By now you're frothing at the mouth thinking of the thrilling battles in the campaign, of blasting people online with all the cool new weapons, and mucking around with the Forge. Now imagine if you could keep a visual record of everything you ever do in Halo 3. It's not only possible, it happens automatically. Every time you play Halo 3 -- be it a campaign level, Forge, or multiplayer -- the 3D game data from your match is saved to your hard drive or memory card. The file is only a few megabytes, but you'd never guess it from the replays you witness.

Let's say you pull off the particularly amazing feat of launching your mongoose off a man cannon (a propulsion device in some multiplayer maps) and as you pirouette in the sky, you manage to snipe an enemy who's rocket has just whizzed past your head. You're no wordsmith. And, more importantly, you're friends know you could never pull off this insane headshot you're trying to describe. Now you have footage to prove there's no fiction behind your greatest deeds. You can go back to that match, pause just as you snipe, detach the camera from your character, and pan around the scene. You'll see the smoke trail of the rocket, and can follow the path of your bullet right through your victim's skull. This can be recorded and uploaded to the one you sniped or anyone else that has a copy of Halo 3.

You can watch your complete tour of the campaign. Want to see a Scarab explode in slow motion? Easily done. Want to see what the AI is doing while Master Chief is running other folks over with a Warthog? Yeah, you can do that too. The replay system is truly amazing, groundbreaking, and undeniably cool. It really is the very best thing about Halo 3. I've watched plenty of replays at this point, but it still has me in awe every time.

The replays also create a greater appreciation for the beauty of Halo 3. This is a gorgeous game that has such a quick pace, it's easy to miss out on some of the things it does well. Pause during any explosion and fly the camera by to view a marvelous shot. The particle effects are truly top notch. It never fails to impress. There's the smoke and dust from the back of the Brute Chopper, the blinding red bolt of the Spartan Laser in action, the subtle shine of Master Chief's armor. Considering that Bungie had to have every nook and cranny of the environment detailed and rendered constantly (because you can detach the camera for replays), Halo 3 really is a marvelous technological achievement. It may not be the prettiest game on Xbox 360, but it's also doing far more than any other game. For that, I can forgive the occasional moments when the framerate jitters or there's some minor texture pop in. I get texture pop in just trying to butter a bagel.

They say to save the best for last, which is why I've neglected to mention the sound until now. Were it not for the excellent sound effects and the top notch score, Halo would not be nearly as good of a game. When Master Chief is about to enter a major battle and the music sweeps in, it's impossible not to feel a sudden surge of adrenaline. Halo's combat theme is the perfect futuristic military anthem. How could you not bring your A game after hearing that evocative orchestral powerhouse? I can't stress enough how vital the sound is to this franchise. The score is powerful, cinematic, and at times moving. It's the music that humanizes a hero who wears a helmet 24/7. For my money, Halo 3 has the best soundtrack of any videogame.

Closing Comments
The campaign, which is very good, is Halo 3's weakest point. It doesn't capture the cavalier spirit of the original Halo, but you'll still have fun playing through it. There's no first-person shooter on 360 that can equal Halo 3's blend of cinematic action, adrenaline-pumping shootouts, and male- (and female)-bonding gameplay. Look beyond the gameplay and you have a rich feature set unlike anything ever delivered in a videogame. The Forge and the replay functionality raise the bar for console shooters so high, it may never be surpassed this generation. There will be plenty of aspects for fans to nitpick, but it's hard to argue against Halo 3 as the most complete game available on any console.

10 Presentation
An amazing replay editor, four-player online co-op, map editor, and community support make this the most robust feature set ever in a videogame.
9.0 Graphics
Despite a few moments of slowdown, this is a gorgeous game, especially considering the demands of the replay function. And it's to die for in 1080p.
10 Sound
This is the reason God created Surround Sound. Halo's theme is a futuristic anthem that inspires the troops. The chatter during combat is fantastic.
9.0 Gameplay
There are a few questionable design choices in the campaign, but this series remains the most fun first-person shooter on the planet. Multiplayer and the Forge are fantastic.
10 Lasting Appeal
The campaign won't take you long to complete, but this is a game that can be played for years. There are so many things to do, and it's so much fun to do them.
9.5
Incredible OVERALL

Halo 3 How-to: Matchmaking Playlists
Posted by lukems at 9/22/2007 4:01 PM PDT

Halo 2's Matchmaking, designed to mirror the on-the-couch experience of playing with your friends in the living room, returns, retuned and upgraded for Halo 3. Since the Halo 3 Public Beta, some things about Matchmaking have changed, some things remain the same. Here's what we said then, updated where appropriate for Halo 3:

In Halo 3’s Matchmaking system, you’ll find a ton of new options and abilities. We’ve made our best effort to improve the already social nature of Matchmaking by giving you some new powers while you use the system to find games and opponents. Now it’s easier than ever to meet people you like, with similar skills and experience.

Experience Points (EXP)

One of Halo 2’s defining features was its ability to match players of similar skill levels, for the most enjoyable possible games, with the fairest outcomes. Although it was a success, we’ve used that experience and data to build an even better, more accurate, and fairer system, that will ensure even more balance, better matching and less cheating and abuse than ever before.

We measure both skill level and experience (this experience is signified by "EXP" standing for Experience Points) in our Matchmaking system. Some players are destined to become pros, while others will prefer to haunt the middle ranks and enjoy the game just for fun. But we’ll reward every player with experience points - earned for time served in Halo 3 Matchmaking. Progress from raw recruit to decorated officer, a reward for good sportsmanship and yet another way for us to make sure games are evenly matched.

Wherever people see your Gamertag in Halo 3, they’ll also see your universally visible experience "EXP" and their associated rank status (Sergeant, for example). They’ll have an instant feel for how long you’ve been playing – and how that compares to your relative skill level in a given playlist. Someone with lots of EXP and a low Matchmaking skill level, might simply be new to that specific matchmaking playlist. Knowing that is the key to knowing your enemy. The layers of complexity we’ve built into the system should make it better and less prone to abuse than ever, while simultaneously enriching the player experience.

Stats, medals and other data will all be displayed right in the game, highlighting top performing players in the postgame carnage report, and visible to anyone who highlights your Gamertag. And yet with all this emphasis on progress, behind the scenes we’re making huge strides in making the act and the consequences of cheating and griefing, less rewarding for those who tend to do that kind of thing.

Party Up!

We told you that Halo 3 was going to be more social than ever before. At the heart of that is some incredible technology, but the spirit is simpler. We’ve introduced a way to recruit players into friendly, social groups who can play for just-one-more-game, or stick together all night as a cohesive group, even if they’ve never met before. It doesn’t matter if they’re on your friends list or not. After a fun game, any player can check a box to “Party Up” and form a new fighting unit. You’ll stick together until you choose to disband.

Parties mean that inviting friends is less of a hassle, and it also means that players don’t get lost in the jump between games. Parties allow folks to form new alliances and play in cohesive teams, even when a regular crew isn’t available. And Parties are available in some ranked games too, so (team size permitting) no matter where you’re playing, you never have to split up.

Using the Veto

As part of the social experience, and the cooperative nature of recruiting new friends, we introduced an element of democracy. It’s called the Veto! Teams and individuals will get one chance to veto (reject, in other words) a game or map type they dislike, with a simple majority vote. To avoid abuse, you only get that single Veto opportunity, but if for example, the majority in a matchmaking lobby just isn’t in the mood for a game of Oddball, check the Veto box (by pressing X) and you’ll skip at random to another selection. Hopefully it’s going to be something more to the group’s taste, because there’s no second Veto.

Of course, keeping an eye on what’s being vetoed and what’s not also helps us keep track of what’s popular and what’s unpopular for future Halo 3 Matchmaking updates. This is just one of the tools we’ll be using to make Matchmaking playlists more fun, with more frequent updates and faster reaction to trends and dislikes.

Our playlists are broken into two broad categories.

Ranked Playlists

Ranked Playlists are for the player who wants to test his and his team’s mettle in a straight up competitive game. These playlists are sport-like in that they are tightly focused—you won’t have the rug pulled out from under you by an unexpected game of Hamster Crack. You will know what to expect, and over time, become versed in the nuance of your preferred playlist’s maps and games.

In addition, enemy player voice is disabled in game in Ranked Playlists. This is because these playlists are about the contest, and not about being Chatty Mc Chatterson. Some people love the art of trash talking above all else—there is a home for you, but it isn’t a Ranked Playlist. The scoreboard does all of the trash talking here.

Lone Wolves
Lone Wolves is our FFA (free for all, every person for themselves) playlist, and the focus is on gametypes where you only need to rely on yourself. The player count is 5, slightly reduced from Rumble Pit, so that it is harder for a player to win simply because he was more effective at farming the weaker players than second place was.

Typical Games: Slayer, Oddball, Crazy King

Team Slayer
The reigning champion from Halo 2, Team Slayer is a straight up Slayer playlist for teams of 4. The majority of games are vanilla Slayer, but there are some weapon variants to mix things up. However, there are no gametypes which overemphasize a single aspect of Halo MP, like Rockets or Swords. Shotty Snipers is as far from home as it gets.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, Team Shotty Snipers

Team Objective
Team Objective is our non-Slayer playlist for teams of 4, and is for the team which wants a more rounded experience. The focus is on round based asymmetric gametypes, like One Flag CTF and Territories. There is no Team Slayer here, but there is some VIP for when you just need to kill things.

Typical Games: One Flag CTF, Territories, One Sided VIP

Team Tactical
Don’t let the name fool you—this is a new and somewhat experimental playlist. The focus here is on gametypes which place a high premium on cold, calculated cunning, and careful play. This does not necessarily mean twitch reflexes or mad headshot skills. The basic gametype here is Eliminatio, so named because it’s not quite elimination. You will respawn, but rounds end at 5 kills, so you and your team cannot afford to blunder into a prepared ambush. Work together, and know every inch and every corner of your maps, or you won’t get far.

Typical Games: Eliminatio, Eliminatio Snipers

Team Doubles
Team Doubles is our 2 vs. 2 playlist, for when you and your buddy don’t want to mess around with organizing big teams. The gametypes here are Slayer and VIP—more diverse than straight up Slayer, but the emphasis is firmly on working as a team and killing your opponents.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, VIP

Social Playlists

Social Playlists are for players who are looking for other players. The game matters less than the people in it, whether you’re looking for people to party up with, or just want to engage in verbal sparring with the guy you just humped. The selection of games is wider here, and the maps are more diverse, so even after several dozen games you might be surprised.

Unlike Ranked Playlists, you’re welcome and encouraged to bring a full party into Social Playlists, filling up both teams with people you know. Matchmaking will offer up games all night long, and even try to balance the teams to boot.

And if you’re working on your Rating, you’re still welcome here—Social Playlists do award XP for wins, though to attain the higher Ratings you will need to prove yourself and earn the required minimum skill level in a Ranked Playlist.

Rumble Pit
Rumble Pit is our social FFA hopper for up to 6 players. Anything goes in the Rumble Pit, and you’ll see a games from Swords to Ninjanaut. Slayer is weighted heavily, but the majority of the selection is more varied.

Typical Games: Slayer, Mosh Pit, Hammerzeit

Social Slayer
The social version of the Team Slayer playlist, Social Slayer is for teams of 4 to 5, and is a bit looser in terms of map selection and weapon variants. If Slayer is your thing, but you like the more casual nature of a Social playlist, then this will be a good home.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, Team Rockets

Social Skirmish
Social Skirmish is our mixed, non-Slayer playlist for teams of 4 to 5. There’s a lot of CTF, Assault, and Territories in this playlist, and it’s ideal if you’re looking for a well rounded selection while building up a party over the course of multiple games.

Typical Games: Multi Flag CTF, Neutral Bomb Assault, Territories

Big Team Battle
BTB is our hopper for teams of 6 to 8. The selection includes both Slayer and objective gametypes, on the larger maps in the game.

At launch, BTB is going to be limited to teams of 6—this is a temporary step to allow Halo 3’s networking systems to figure out who the good hosts are, so that matchmaking can function properly and set up games that aren’t crapshoots. However, once things are firmed up, we plan to increase the limit back up to the traditional 8 per team.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, VIP, Multi Flag CTF

Multi Team
Multi Team is a slightly different take on team games, with four teams of 2. The games have more of an FFA feel, but you still have a teammate with whom to share your victories and commiserate about your defeats.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, VIP, King of the Hill

Social Doubles
The social version of the Team Doubles playlist, for teams of 2. This playlist is ideal for people looking for smaller, head to head games, whether by preference or by player count. The games lean towards Team Slayer and weapon variants thereof, but there’s also some VIP and Territories in there to mix things up.

Typical Games: Team Slayer, VIP, Flag Rally

cot damn i'm excited to fuck ya'll up on this shit. co-op will be fun too.

121255, under the ranked playlists paragraph
Posted by mashpg89, Sun Sep-23-07 11:55 PM
"In addition, enemy player voice is disabled in game in Ranked Playlists. This is because these playlists are about the contest, and not about being Chatty Mc Chatterson. Some people love the art of trash talking above all else—there is a home for you, but it isn’t a Ranked Playlist. The scoreboard does all of the trash talking here."
121257, eww. Whats the fucking point?
Posted by ansomble, Mon Sep-24-07 01:14 AM
Like who said that would be a great idea? I'm tired of Bungie trying to play playground monitor to the mayhem. Just let that shit take its course. Then, have the nerve to run thier fuckin jaws on some "social element"

They just turned the whole thing into TEH SUP3R GHEY.
121307, Not really. I don't need to hear the other team.
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Mon Sep-24-07 12:24 PM
121313, i do.
Posted by The Damaja, Mon Sep-24-07 12:48 PM
how could they not realize what a major tactical element overheard communications were
hearing stuff like 'i think he's hiding at the back door i'll go and check' or 'warthog collect me at the gate' was fucking vital
121314, See, that's the aspect of Gears of War that I like
Posted by Lach, Mon Sep-24-07 12:51 PM
They don't let you talk to the other team till the round is over. Which is what I prefer because the number of assholes out there outweighs the cool cats.
121381, But why? It's what made Halo 2 even better.
Posted by ansomble, Mon Sep-24-07 08:54 PM
The tactical element of it was undeniable. The immersion into the multiplayer was even greater. To think, you ACTUALLY had to be quiet to get inside of the base unscathed and to think you had to plan all your shit out AWAY from the enemy so they couldn't hear your communications. Y'all might be TOO casual with it, this is Halo fuckin 3 we're talking about here. Not some cock-a-mamy "fueled by OKP hype" type bojanglin' bullshit. This is one of the top entertainment moments of all time.

Not to even MENTION the fact that you can listen to someone shit talk down the hallway only to lace his armor with the scorch of a 12 gauge round up close and tell him that he's wrong as you trample his pathetic corpse on your way to jam nades up his friends shithole.

I ain't mean to flame off on you LAch, but for real tho.
121389, Nah, there was a team chat button
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Mon Sep-24-07 10:18 PM
You didn't have to be quiet, you just had to make sure you pressed up (orthe white button...or whatever) to talk *just* to your team.

The trash talk I heard was mostly nigher this and arab that. Not the stuff I need to hear when I'm already out the house every morning trying hard not to hurt the white people.

over proximity chat the same as before

another biproduct of this is that most games are eerilie quiet cause usually people only started organizing themselves via chat having heard the other team do so

sure enough, mine was scratched and i didnt even want the limited version, the moron at gamestop wrote me down for that and charged me more by mistake (i didnt notice the price difference because i had traded in games towards it).

but yeah, ms is now offering a free mail in trade on their website for scratched copies through decemember. luckily for MS, scratched discs still seem to work without issues, and it appears to be more of an aesthetic thing, but we cant know for sure until we put a lot of hours into it.

plenty of copies and 10 bucks cheaper than anywhere else i believe.

even though i said i'd wait till the weekend i ended up playing a few matches today. this game is fucking great!

only minor complaints are that i think the needler is a little too powerful now and what the fuck is up with the popups??? i would prefer the graphics be dumbed down a bit than having popups.

121520, The campaign is extremely fun so far..(about to start Tsavo Highway)
Posted by LA2Philly, Wed Sep-26-07 01:30 AM
Played single-player on Heroic, and Im loving the environments so far, esp that first jungle was sick....giving me GoldenEye flashbacks. A couple of parts were tough on the first level without a solid co-op because you can get pinned down and outflanked unless you really pay attention.

Hardest parts were the one spot where youe dropship gets hit by the Banshee(detaching the turret was SICK), and then you gotta proceed to kill all the cats there, and then the hardest spot so far was the last part of the level when you gotta save the squad and you gotta duke it out with the 3-4 brutes on the bridge all the while having to deal with some carbine fire from your flank(It took me numerous tries but eventually I killed a couple brutes with the carbine, lured out the chieftain, grenade + melee, took his gravity hammer + invincibility and utilized a carbine to kill off the remaining brutes and long-range foes. Proceeded to the downstairs path, hammer + invinciblity = mass carnage, and saved the colonel and crew.) 2nd level in the base was relatively easy esp since you get a grip of grenades, special items(regenerator is fucking awesome, bubble shield is cool too esp if you have a good melee weapon if cats wanna try to take you on inside), and I grabbed a gravity hammer from another chieftain.

Question though, anyone else feel that brutes seem to be alot easier to kill than the elites from Halo 1 and 2? I remember on 2, elities on heroic would move around so much and it would really take a powerful weapon or some timely headshots to kill them....maybe its just because you actually fight alot of differentiated brutes in this one so they toned down the difficulty of the lower ones whereas in Halo 2, it was only a small amount of Elites and a grip of normal cats.

Game is great so far, cant wait to get into on Legendary on co-op(really dont feel like Ive brushed up enough to takee in on in single-player without wasting a grip of time).

edit: Lastly, the replay option is fucking awesome. I love being able to move around the terrain freely, and also take some sick pictures. My only questions....how the fuck do you rewind and is there any way to skip forward faster?
121528, You can't rewind the single player replays
Posted by BigReg, Wed Sep-26-07 06:07 AM
multiplayer tho you can, one of the reviews i read pointed it out and said hopefully they would patch that up(cause there's really no logical reason for the difference)

Just way too much fun, and also a shout out to the end of Tsava Highway(the point you gotta take on the 3 tanks on the top of the hill and all the Brute Choppers). Putting the Mongoose into high gear with the rocket-cat on the back was fucking sick....and then when the Scarab comes in, I was on some Eowyn in ROTK type shit vs the Oliphants, just making runs underneath the belly and duke firing away.

About to start the first mission with Flood involved....lets hope they dont ruin the strategy and fun of the game like they did in Halo 2.
121770, battling the Flood has been pretty tasteful so far
Posted by LA2Philly, Fri Sep-28-07 02:16 AM
They arent simply everywhere and so overpowering in sheer numbers that you have to run....you can actually take them down. Plus, you get some well placed energy swords or gravity hammers to really make shit fun.
121812, i love those two levels.
Posted by PlanetInfinite, Fri Sep-28-07 01:14 PM
i like playing co op when you battle the scarab because you have someone distracting the tank while you disable the legs and climb inside.

for some reason it was a bitch trying to find that damned control panel tho.

eventually i found it and yelled "GTFOH NIGGA IT'S FALLIIIIIING!" while i jump outta the top of the scarab tank.

Outside of one level, I LOVED the campaign...some great fights, great vehicles, great action. I still maintain, however, that the 2nd level in Halo 2(on Earth, in the city) remains the best level of any Halo yet....urban warfare at its most fun, and plus taking down the scarab at the end was too much fun.

121897, RE: Beat it
Posted by xangeluvr, Sat Sep-29-07 01:07 AM
the skulls modify the games in different ways, but you have to turn them on in one of the menus before you start the game. i one or two as well, but do you have to pick them up, shoot them, or what cuz i couldn't do anything with them?

>That was a great game.

121899, Picking them up unlocks the skull for play and the achievement.
Posted by ansomble, Sat Sep-29-07 01:43 AM
They do nothing otherwise, it's a tad different from Halo 2. Just pick em up and drop em.
121915, I just picked it up and it gave me an achievement
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Sat Sep-29-07 10:45 AM
I couldn't use it as a weapon or anything like the one in oddball.

I thought it was supposed to make the game harder like in Halo 2, but I didn't notice a difference.
122078, You have to turn the skulls on
Posted by cskncream, Mon Oct-01-07 03:00 PM
Once you find one, you can go into your campaign menu and turn their effects on and off. You can't do it mid-game though, so once you find it, you can pick it up, drop it and then move on.

By the way, that Grunt Party skull never gets old. You don't get an achievement for it, but it's hilarious to me.

My thing is, the only game I'm playing online like that is Halo 3 anyway.

I played multiplayer Gears maybe twice all 2007.

Plus, Sony has dedicated servers for all their first party games, for free, while we're paying for system to system stuff.

I think as PS3's system gets better and better, they'll at least have to reduce the price.

122065, my review - from a person who never played 1 & 2
Posted by L_O_Quent, Mon Oct-01-07 01:48 PM
Pros:
- cool multiplayer games and 4 person co-op makes the campaign fun
- Extremely big maps in multiplayer with really varied options
- THEATER - damn near perfection except for the fast forwarding and rewinding it.
- Damn near all the vehicles are fun to pilot and/or drive

Cons:

- GRAPHICS, I have yet to understand how Bungie could be in the video gaming industry and not go back to work, after seeing previews of other games, and work harder. This game looks like a build from 2 years ago. I can't seem to figure out how games like Gears and G.R.A.W 2 could be out up to a year in advance and they didn't upgrade their graphics.

- Multiplayer takes too fucking long to get into, waaaaaaay too long.

- if someone in your Co-Op leaves you have to begin the whole level over, makes no sense. why can't AI kick in?

- In multiplayer the amount of shots you place on a person before they die doesn't seem to have any type of balancing point. I've shot people with a whole clip while throwing two grenades at them and they calmly walked up to me and pimp slapped me back to respawn.

- Aiming is painful at times, this may be because I don't have enough experience (even though I've beat the Campaign on co-op, although on normal)

At least that's my 2 cents

122082, I haven't had the problems you're having
Posted by Lach, Mon Oct-01-07 03:15 PM
cept for matchmaking which took time for them to iron out with Halo 2. It was hard to connect to a match in the beginning with that game and the same thing is happening with Halo 3. But it looks like the kinks are getting worked out because its getting easier and easier for me to connect to matches with each passing day.

In regards to the aiming and what not, you gotta get the feel of it and also know what weapons to use. Some of the little guns can take you out much faster than others. Also, though it doesn't seem like it in Halo, where you hit someone determines how fast they'll die. Sometimes folk in slayer get upset because they're letting out a clip of the machine gun on me, but I'm steady hitting them in the head with battle rifle shots and take them out faster. Melee attacks have been increased in power in Halo 3 as well. Watch out. If someone fires a couple times and swipes at you, you're dead. In all, I'm having a blast with multiplayer. I think I'm on a level of 27 now just playing Lone Wolves.

The graphics are a bit on the ok side. Particularly the player models. While the game looks good, it doesn't look as impressive as you were saying when in comparison to Gears and GRAW2. Honestly, I don't think they could have put as much into the game if they made the graphics as good as those games. Something would have had to give. Shit would have been 20 gigs. I think that's the reason why Gears doesn't have as many modes as some shooters because Epic use so much of the DVD with graphics.

In all, the game is pure fun. I can play the multiplayer all day long and never get tired of it. I wanna see how far I can get my ranking up.

Other than the obvious lack in the Graphics department, this ^^^ is my only gripe. Thus, the reason I don't even try matchmaking. I'm a vet and very skilled SOCOM and COD player so all this entire clip and a bag of grenades not killing someone really pisses me off at times. I don't care what kinda fuckin supersoldier MC is, the fucker can't just go thru grenades like they aren't shit. The human grenades are some of the worst grenades in all of video gaming history, that's my fuckin word.
122134, that just means you arent good yet though

it depends WHERE you shoot them. A vet can take you down pretty easily and the shotgun is a 1 shot kill in close range.

you will see over time as you get better, u can murk fools quicker.

its not a COD approach where u can just kill ppl in a few shots. its not that type of game- never has been.

If you're not aiming above the shoulders, do so and stop waisting bullets. If you're in a one on one gun battle and don't have a clear shot, stop waisting bullets. You move better when you're not pulling the trigger. Also, melee attacks can be your best weapon
122183, try shooting 1/2 the clip while closing in and then melee....

worked well for me in Halo2. Also aim for the head.
122192, I think the graphics are pretty good.
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Tue Oct-02-07 09:53 AM

They just fall apart when it comes to the humans, especially the faces. I swear Johnson looked better in Halo 2.

The levels look awesome though. The HDR lighting effects are pretty nice to look at.

I do think it’s funny that after all the high definition talk, Microsoft’s biggest title isn’t even natively high def if what they say is to be believed (they claim HD starts at 720p).
122242, its not GOW... buts graphics are solid
Posted by HighVoltage, Tue Oct-02-07 04:07 PM
especially in replay theater. you appreciate it much more after that.

but the lighting and water effects are excellent and the folliage and snow really impressed me.

its just the faces and player models that were a bit lacking.

I agree that it doesn't deserve anything close to a 10, but I think the fun of it is more about the feel of the combat than anything. I haven't played a fps that felt as good in the gameplay department (Bioshock was cool and all, but the enemies were dumb as fuck on Hard compared to the Halo bad guys on Legendary).
122503, Hey, anybody know the name of that song at the beginning of this?

*spoiler*

That mission where you finally rescue Cortana from the depths of the Gravemind infested High Charity.....that shit had me flashing back to the Halo 2 and the Flood missions w/ the Arbiter where you essentially just have to runup to this point , meaning you could actually use strategy to take down the limited amount of flood, but on this mission, shit was just so frustrating and annoying(esp those fucking missile launcher thingies, these mugfuckers only go down with melees, carbine only stops them for a few seconds). There was a ridiculous amount of flood, thats cool considering you are in their nest essentially, but don't make it where you basically have to guess and check to get through a whole level, and at times, get very lucky too. It was just a terrible fucking level.
122447, ugh
Posted by crow, Thu Oct-04-07 09:22 AM
I was so frustrated and annoyed by that point that I wanted to stop playing. It isn't so much the flood was hard, it was just annoying as shit that it was so close quarters and those wall things could hit you from a mile off.

I was so sick of the flood after 5 minutes in that place
122467, honestly single player Halo sucked balls
Posted by RobOne4, Thu Oct-04-07 02:22 PM
this was my first time through Halo single player, and it was GARBAGE. I mean the levels looked good, sometimes the music was good, but there was nothing special about it. The story was very boring, I am still mad the music wouldnt change during combat. There was no direction arrow telling you where to go, instead you would run around for 5 minutes until the arrow popped up. There was nothing really hard about it. I mean it was all very forgettable. I know some of you die hards will come in and bash me for this, but Gears single player was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

But I do have to admit multiplayer is the shit, even though the matchmaking is crap.
122471, I don't think halo deserves its 10's and 9's
Posted by crow, Thu Oct-04-07 02:51 PM
Read the review, even they say that Halo 3's single play is subpar. But cuz its multiplayer is superb it gets these great reviews.

Shouldn't it be the total package warrants a 10? If any other game had a terrible single player itd pull of 7's.

The single player was terrible, only reaal fun I had was the scarab battles and running around in vehicles. The enemies are uninspired and not intimidating in the least.
122472, no and heres why.....

I played Halo 2 ALL THE TIME for a good 2 years..... and to this day... have Never even started the solo mission. The multiplayer was just that good. Im assuming the same with Halo 3.

I mean your right...but still...

Cuz it's been out almost 2 weeks and other than playing the singler player during online co-op with whosnext, I haven't played the single player at all. I've been obsessed with the multiplayer. Trying to get my status to level 40 by the weekend.
122508, thats my point though
Posted by crow, Thu Oct-04-07 07:25 PM
Only Halo 3 can get away with just making a great multiplayer game and shipping out a shitty single player.

If it was just a multiplayer then I'd definitely agree it warrants such a high score.
122493, Halo is a mass market game
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Thu Oct-04-07 05:29 PM
So that default difficulty is set to three year old.

Put it on Legendary and it becomes a whole different experience. The level design is incredible, but without difficult enemies, you don't really appreciate how much you have to use the environment.
122498, I love the campaign missions....esp on Legendary like you said
Posted by LA2Philly, Thu Oct-04-07 05:36 PM
The only mission that I have disliked so far has been the one I mentioned above(getting Kortana) because of the ridiculous amount of long-range shooters and cramped quarters.
122518, i did half the game on Heroic
Posted by RobOne4, Thu Oct-04-07 09:14 PM
and shit wasnt really that hard. Me and rjcc got through 4 levels in a few hours and that was really my first time playing Halo. I have played a few levels on Legendary and I still think its pretty basic. I mean it really seems like they spent all their time on environments and multiplayer. After thye created the environments they just dropped a bunch of enemies to fight, and called it a day. LA2Philly you dick riding this shit HARD. Rainbow 6 Vegas and Gears of War had waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better single player.

The only similarity Halo shares with RS and GOW is that they are FPS. The styles of gameplay are way different.

You ever realize that other people may have different opinions than you? *GASP* I love RS and GOW, but I also love to play Halo campaign, esp on legendary. They are completely different games, and where did I say that Halo wwas the best single-player? You need to stop eating the excess refried beans at your taco stand Rob, you are eating yourself retarded.
123171, Gears of War Single Player was ass.
Posted by ansomble, Fri Oct-12-07 12:30 PM
And Rainbow Six led a great story to a butt ass cliff hanger and plot twist. Halo 3 single player was overall easy EVEN on Legendary with a few hang up spots that you had to do 10 times over and over either learning how to do it fluidly or just getting fucking lucky.

All in all all three of those Single Player story lines sucked and were forgettable. So stop trying to float one over the other, they all were ass.

Now, if you wanted to talk BioShock then you'd have a valid competitor for a game that actually invests its efforts into Single Player.

122953, HALO 3 UPDATE!!!!!!

I'm pleased that they listen to us complaining about the shotty sniper matches.

Halo 3: Matchmaking Playlist Update 1
Posted by lukems at 10/9/2007 11:07 AM PDT
Halo 3's Matchmaking Playlists, just like Halo 2's, are dynamic and ever-changing entities. Even now in the perilous Bungie towers, we're looking at new hoppers, gametypes and modes to test for future iterations and changes of these playlists. Multiplayer Lead Tyson Green and test wunderkind David Gasca sent the following list of changes to us -- and these changes are live now:

* Big Team Battle matches are now 16-player affairs.
* In the Team Slayer playlist, the appearance of Shotty Snipers has been greatly reduced.
* Now, when players veto Shotty Snipers, the game that results from the veto will not be Shotty Snipers.
* In one-sided VIP matches, the attacking team will now see a waypoint for the VIP they are hunting.
* In Lone Wolves, Slayer gametypes will appear more frequently.

122968, Get your ranks up yall. Just topped 40 in Lone Wolves
Posted by Lach, Wed Oct-10-07 12:55 PM
Is it me, or is it much easier to destroy folk now that there aren't 8 people in slayer matches? There are no more easy kills like in Halo 2 because 4 of the 8 people were garbage. Having just 5 people makes it much harder to come in first imo. I like it.
123073, Gilbert Arenas cheats at Halo 3 (swipe)
Posted by soul creator, Thu Oct-11-07 01:54 PM
hahaha

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/dcsportsbog/2007/10/is_gilbert_cheating_at_halo.html#more

Is Gilbert Cheating at Halo?

You thought Bill Belichick was bad? Just wait.

I was first alerted to this budding scandal via Reader Eli, who wrote with the tales of Gilbert's Halo3 adventures. Using one of his three gamer tags (Agent Arenas is one), he'll start a two-on-two "social" game with a friend, each using a phony teammate. Once the game starts, the two phony players are eliminated, and the real players take turns beating up each other to drive up their experience points.

"I love Gil," Eli wrote, "and it's almost laughable what he's doing."

Threads concerning the matter popped up at Bungie.net and IGN.com, with the response mostly anti-Gil.

"Your stats obviously show what a joke you are. I'd be so friggin embarrassed if I was him," GreenYoshiJosh wrote.

"what a loser...... why waste ure time doing that..." Leprechaun007 wrote.

"I want to write an email to ESPN and see if they put this PTI or something," wrote MC187, who discovered the scam.

(Tell me again how I don't do real reporting.)

Anyhow, like any good reporter, I went to Gilbert to get his response.

"Gilbert," I said, approximately, "people say you're cheating at Halo 3."

"I'm cheating?" he said. "How am I cheating?"

"Gilbert," I asked, approximately," are you creating dummy games with two fake friends and using the wins to rack up experience points?"

"Yeah," he said, laughing. "Yeah."

Sigh.

"It's a glitch," he explained. "It's a glitch in the game. I seen some kids that were like 600s, they won 600 Halo games and we only had that game for two weeks. And all the kids go to school. So I'm like, 'What the hell you all doing?' And they said that's what they doing, two-on-two."

I don't play video games, and feel free to correct me, but let me try to explain, via Gilbert. The highest rank you can get in the game is 50 out of 50, and such rankings come from serious competition. But you can also rack up experience points through "social" games that don't affect your actual ranking, and hence, the scam. Gilbert said he three accounts have actual rankings of 42, 45 and 47, but that these freebie experience points can drive up your title from commander to major and double major and triple major and so on.

He said there are other Halo scams that he doesn't know how to pull off; one he described as "lagging," where kids somehow freeze you out of the game and then kill your helpless character.

"They go around killing you and get the win every time; there's people who've played the game 200 times and have 200 wins," he said. "People do that and they don't get complaints," Gilbert said. "But if I go two-on-two to get experience points?"

He said he just discovered the trick last night with a buddy, and that they did it about 25 times. He said usually he plays with the kids from his own team, Final Boss. And he scoffed at the suggestion that he was doing this to compensate for below-average gaming skills.

"That has nothing to do with me playing against other people, because when I play against other people I'm a 47 out of 50," he argued. "It has nothing to do with your . That's just like me playing basketball and I say, 'The first one to 100,000 shots...' and I go in there and say 'Yeah, I made 100,000, I won.' But when you go out there you can't shoot the ball."

In other words, his argument is that he can shoot the ball, so any trickeration should be forgiven. But now that he'd been called out, I suggested, he wouldn't keep pulling the scam, right?

"Why not?" he said. "I mean, who is it hurting? It's two dummy players playing against each other. It's not messing with anybody. I have my friend, it'll be him and his fake friend, me and my fake friend, we'll take turns losing back and forth. There's nobody involved. I can see if we were playing against other people, it's not ranked games, it's social games. So that's the messed-up part. You can win things off of social, when you shouldn't to. All you have to do is do what we're doing. I guarantee everybody's doing it. I mean, how would they know anyway?"

Which is how I soon found myself on a nearby computer, watching an NBA All-Star and MVP candidate read video game message board threads on something called "Bungie.net," cackling at all the outraged comments from people named "Godofdarksouls" and "HydrogIsBack."

"They want to put this on PTI?" he said. "How do I reply?" he asked me. "I want to reply."

But then Coach Eddie Jordan showed up; "C'mon, GA, let's go watch tape," Eddie said.

To be continued, I guess.

123293, real ending of halo 3 = the secret terminals
Posted by The Damaja, Sun Oct-14-07 12:51 PM
(moved since rjcc is a cretinous nebbish)

you may or may not be aware that there are 7 secret 'terminals' on the latter levels of Halo 3 that contain lots of text. basically they tell the full story of the Halo universe in the same way that the terminals in Marathon did (Marathon had the best story ever found in a computer game). Bungie was back on top form when they wrote these cause they make the Halo story seem just as good

so anyway they explain (in a creative way)
- the origins of the Flood
- the ridiculous good fortune of the Masterchief
- the reason there was that portal buried in Africa
- all the biblical references in the game (in fact it all ties up to real religions (i would say christianity but i'm sure the tales of Genesis are shared with many other religions) )
-what happened to the Forerunners
- why GuiltySpark thinks MC is a Forerunner
- the final image seen when you complete the campaign on legendary and sit through all the credits

there's also some great characterisation and an account of the IMMENSE final battle between Flood and Forerunner which is worth the price of admission alone

you can read them here if you can't be bothered reading them in game (reading them in game is pretty awkward. i think Bungie wanted to get the Halo community focussed around the whole idea, rather than them just being some screens of text that everyone skims through)
http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=13233687&postRepeater1-p=1
there's also the Halopedia
halo.wikia.com/wiki/Terminals

i know i've shat upon Halo's storyline in the past... let's be honest though the way its presented through the cutscenes is a bit of a mess... and OK they did release official novels to pad out the story but those things read like they're written by a 14 year old fan fiction geek... but THIS, these terminals, make up for it. i've spent most of today reading them and figuring it all out and reading all the theories (i'm stuck indoors with a virus though... that excludes me from sad-bastard status. what's your excuse?)
123337, i read this, pretty confused

but buried so deep it's ridiculous

i mean... put it this way... the central character of the Halo universe, the one who's caused all the events of the game and had a motive for it all, only makes an appearance on the 2nd last level! and a minor one that most people will completely miss at that
123857, Hey

Clue us in
123937, ok so...
Posted by The Damaja, Fri Oct-19-07 12:15 PM
everyone knows about The Covenant, a civilization of alien religious zealots
everyone who got halfway through the first game knows about the Flood, a parasite that turns its hosts into zombies and spreads like wildfire
anyone who paid an ounce of attention knows about the Forerunners, an ancient space faring civilization who built the Halos to defeat the flood but were basically wiped out in doing so
and how the Covenant religion is based around what they know of the Forerunners and the artifacts they left behind

now, fans will know about High Charity, the spaceship-city that's the religious centre of the Covenant, their Holy City, and is powered by an appropriated Forerunner Dreadnought inside it. High Charity is the spaceship you go onto in towards the end of Halo 2, and the one in the intro video, with the council chamber and the high prophets etc

people who read the terminals in Halo 3 will know about Mendicant Bias, an AI programmed by the Forerunners to lead their military forces in the fight against the Flood. the Forerunners' trump card

people who read ALL the terminals will know that Mendicant Bias talked to the Flood's hive-mind and was persuaded that the Flood were the next step in evolution, and so he betrayed the Forerunners and allied with the enemy. so the Forerunners used their last resort and fired the Halos, wiping out most biological life in the galaxy and thus killing all the Flood's hosts. meanwhile Mendicant Bias was defeated/captured by another Forerunner AI (designed specifically to defeat him) in the final epic battle, and was then disassembled and shipped back to 'the Ark' so they could study his program.

now, people who thought hard enough about all the clues and unexplained events in the terminals will realize... that part of Mendicant Bias's program did not return to the Ark but escaped on a Forerunner ship... and this ship was of course the one later found by the Covenant, the one High Charity was built around, and Mendicant Bias was of course the one whom The Prophets took their knowledge from and he allowed them to create this twisted religion and go on their crusade against human 'infidels', BASICALLY all because he wanted to go through the portal on Earth and reunite with the rest of his program in the Ark, and be restored to his full power/glory (although when he was finally reconstructed he was like 'fuck the Flood' and helped Masterchief to destroy them and escape, even though it meant his own destruction)
124002, Ok, this much I read with that first link you gave
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Fri Oct-19-07 08:19 PM
but where do you actually see him doing this in the game?

>(although when he was finally reconstructed he was like 'fuck
>the Flood' and helped Masterchief to destroy them and escape,
>even though it meant his own destruction)
124008, well, in one of the terminals he says
Posted by The Damaja, Fri Oct-19-07 08:46 PM
because he's changed his ways, he'll 'try to keep the path ahead stable', that's right at the end, ie. just before you try to drive a warthog to the frigate over a platform that conveniently doesn't fall and make it impossible... and then you go through the portal and you conveniently get diverted halfway through to a Forerunner world

if you read the other terminals, it says Mendicant Bias managed to interfere with the portal and life support controls on The Ark

>but where do you actually see him doing this in the game?
>

>'fuck

Naw, but for real, I am.

Oh well, more practice. I got it Friday and it's my first real Halo experience since I didn't have an og XBox. I've been playing on my roommates as a guest since 3 came out, tho. It's a little too much fun at the moment.

And I know I'm real late on this and it might sound corny, but it's real cool playing with friends from college who aren't anywhere near me. It's like the good ol' days back at the dorm, 'cept we don't have to rock the 4-player split screen on a 19 inch tv anymore.

My tag is Ishwip.

124351, what rank are youse in Halo 3 compared to Halo 2?
Posted by The Damaja, Tue Oct-23-07 02:41 PM
in Halo 2 it took me like 2 years to get to level 31
in Halo 3, i've already reached level 42 in a few weeks

either they've changed the system, or, they've removed all the cheaters who were hogging the upper ranks, or, they've improved the netcode so that european gamers actually get a fair chance. or i'm just much better at Halo 3
124358, I think it's a lot of this
Posted by chillinCHiEF, Tue Oct-23-07 03:58 PM

>they've removed all the
>cheaters who were hogging the upper ranks

Plus weapon rebalancing. It’s a lot harder to get noob combo kills (although not THAT hard) and get sniper headshots. They also made the starting weapon and melee attacks pretty damn tough, so it’s not so much about who can get to the best weapons the quickest and more about who has better aim and things like that.
124369, yeah and also they've removed all those stupid glitch moves
Posted by The Damaja, Tue Oct-23-07 05:02 PM
like BXR, BRB and all that, which gives the people who don't know how to do them a better chance

maybe to get above level 30 in halo 2 you HAD to use the noob combo and the glitches, and i could never be bothered (who wants to play like that?)
124378, I never cared about ranks in H2, don't in H3
Posted by mashpg89, Tue Oct-23-07 05:51 PM
Ranks don't really mean much imo. I'm a low rank but am a pretty good player. Plus when you get up to like the 30s and stuff (from my experience from H2) it's just not fun anymore. People start to take the game too seriously and only care about winning. Plus they almost don't talk, they're too focused on their rank.

I'd much rather play in social playlists and custom games where people are there to have fun and I can still talk shit when I snipe your dome apart.
124384, nah you need to play at your max level
Posted by The Damaja, Tue Oct-23-07 06:44 PM
i keep having crazy games of team slayer that come down to 49 points each, one kill left in it
the beauty of matchmaking/ranking is that every game is like that, if you play well
124380, I went up like 15 points in team slayer last night
Posted by Lach, Tue Oct-23-07 06:02 PM
I think I'm a 22 now in Team Slayer. I'm 41 in Lone Wolves. The weapons are way more balanced now is my take on it. Even the needler is the shit now. People use to walk by a needler in halo 2 even when they had no good weapon. The melee attacks tho are just downright rediculous now though. I think everyone gets the majority of their kills from melee attacks. shoot, melee. repeat.

i'm 27 in team slayer and 10 in lone wolves, still under 100 xp.

the people i usually play with have started to get annoying, they've learned the maps and want to do the same thing every time. the last couple days we've played about 50/50 wins/losses. not good for rank. our ranks are getting spread apart too so one guy usually gets dominated.

let me know if you see me on and want to join up - twabovetopsecrt

Halo 2:

Halo 3:

125194, New Playlist: Playlist of the Living Dead
Posted by ne_atl, Wed Oct-31-07 08:55 PM
http://www.bungie.net/news/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=12912

In the dead of night, cold lids flutter and wake from dread slumber. What do those milky eyes see when they rise from their graves? What do those decaying nostrils scent in the air as they sniff the perfumed night of the boneyard? Brains of course. Succulent, delicious brains. Brains are to zombies as bacon is to people. Or candy, if you’re kosher.

It is a scientific fact that zombies feast on human brains because they are the softest meat on a person and Zombie dental care is not really up to snuff.

To celebrate the gustatory tendencies of the walking dead and to acknowledge All Hallows Eve, we’re launching a spooktacular, eerie-otic and cryptmongous playlist for 27 horror-filled hours, starting on October 31st at 12:01am and ending at 3:00am on November 1st because we love Hawaii Halloween too (Chicken skin kine). It is infection and it is the playlist of the Living Dead.

To answer your eerie queries and uncanny questions, we reanimated Transylvanian Tyson Green from his dank and moldering pit.

Q: Infection, what’s that?

Infection is this really great gametype, inspired by a custom game devised by our community in Halo 2, which we added official support for in Halo 3. In Infection, most players start off on a Human team, with one or more players starting off as Zombies. The odds are stacked heavily against the Zombies at first, but when a Human is killed by a Zombie (as they inevitably are), they join the Zombie team and turn on their former teammates.

Q: How long will the Living Dead haunt matchmaking?

Just for Halloween, from 12:01am to 3:00am the next morning, PST. We decided to let it go a bit late into the morning to give people a chance to play when they got home from their Halloween carousing. Infection is a lot of fun when everyone is into it, but we don’t think it would make a good playlist long term, so it’s going to come and go.

And if everyone has a good time, who knows? It may return, as the restless dead are known to do.

Q: Can I get achievements in this playlist?

Yes, it is set up as a Ranked Playlist, and players will have some good opportunities to pick up a few of the harder MP achievements without any of that pesky guilt. Fending off the hungry dead is as righteous a way as any to score an Overkill. It’s also a good chance to fill out your Ranked Medals with some of the Infection medals, like Infection Spree and Hell’s Janitor.

Q: Can I join with my homies or is this a Lone Wolves style hopper? And how many corpses will I play with?

You can join with a max party size of 4, Infection matches can start with eight players and the games have a player limit of 13. You cannot, however, join with Guests (multiple players on one box).

Q: There’s more than one version of Infection in this playlist, what is each version and how does it work?

We’re using two main versions: Save One Bullet, which is close to classical Infection but with limited ammunition which keeps the Humans from holding off the Zombies forever, and Creeping Death, where the Zombies are a bit slower but shockingly invisible and deadly. Creeping Rockets is a third variant where the Humans are more heavily armed, but the Zombies are tougher too.

Q: Do the maps in Living Dead have the same set-ups that I am used to?

The Living Dead playlist will be the first to use Forge variants in Matchmaking. Lars and Dan pulled out all the stops and Forged some masterful variants featuring fortified positions and anti-Zombie booby traps to help get people into the Zombie mind (which is to say, wanting to get into a Human’s mind. Directly.)

Q: Man, I love these gametypes is there any way I can get them?

Any time you play one of these variants in Matchmaking, they’re saved in your Recent Games queue (in the Custom Games lobby, go to select the game type—the Recent Games list is at the top.) They may also show up in the Bungie Favorites this week.

Q: Will there be more special hoppers in the future?

You bet.

I bought into the hype cuz I knew my OK kin killers would be on more but the fact of the matter is this is boring. It has it's fun "moments" sure, but its just fucking boring. There's no strategy beyond grabbing a powerful gun and snagging as many kills as you can. The maps get annoying, there is little vehicle usage outside of Sandtrap where it's just a fucking cirque du soliel of tires and spartan lasers, it's fucking dull.

I can't wait for Call of Duty 4.
125507, i dont think its the best multiplayer that everyone said it was

this is really my first time on Halo. The single player was horrible. Multiplayer is above average. But I still think gears is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better. Like you said there is little strategy. Plus because of respawns people just run out and do stupid shit. Shit its my first time on Halo and I jumped to 32 rank in a few days time. That shows u how hard the game is to learn.

big team battles are the shit.
125509, youse must be some intense n00bs

the fact that you jumped to a 32 rank in a few days is testament to how good the matchmaking system is. the whole point is to pit you against players of equal ability, and it didn't take long to establish you were level 32ish, rather than having to move through the ranks at a snails pace

there's tons of strategy in Halo 3... i suppose you're mad it's no longer 'grab the rocket and snipes and sit tight'. they've balanced the weapons to stop n00bish strategies prevailing

Gears of War??????? you're kidding, right? that game was GARBAGE online. quite fun solo/co-op but no Halo 3
