Damn that. there is no draft, so anyone that is in the military right now is there voluntarily. I realize that economics make it very enticing to go into the armed forces, but if you work for those that are doing wrong in the world willingly, no matter what the reward, you are aiding the promotion of evil doings, and I can't support it on any level. I have a few friends and family in the military, and I tell them the same message.

So, yes, F___ the troops!!!

these things come from HIGH (matter fact...very high) UP. so for those cats that have been re-programmed since high-school grads...they don't have any other knowledge but how to serve.

Yes, there are people who truly have no respect for human life and thusly join the military and enjoy war.

However, the troops on the ground are generally people who come from shitty backgrounds with no sense of what life in the army is really like. propoganda and recruiters barrage them with false dreams of future success and promises of armor and support. Hmmm...join the military and have a chance, or live a boring rural or urban life with little chance of getting out. Especially considering how many of the people in Iraq signed up for National Guard or reserve and got tricked into going, they deserve our empathy.

Those troops who sign up to kill because of a fascination with it, they deserve little support. Those who signed up because it was their one real chance to get out of a shitty experience and signed up out of manipulated patriotism or because until 9/11 it looked like the military really just did peacekeeping and such deserve support.

To say anything else is to be far too reductionist. Also, to say "fuck the troops" is to be purposefully antagonistic and make countless people not bother listening to other arguments you have to offer.

NEW YORK � A headline in a leading Arabic daily newspaper, al-Hayat, caught my attention on Wednesday, although I had seen it many times before. �New mass grave discovered in Iraq,� it read.

In particular, the writer used the term �makaber jammiyeya,� the Arabic catch phrase for those evil hordes of skeletons unearthed so many times in Karbala, Sarajevo and other scenes of mass murder and genocide.

But as I read further, I discovered the article was talking about something rather different � that the more than 80 bodies found this week near Baghdad had been found by Iraqi boys after their soccer game was interrupted by the stench of rotting corpses. The boys stopped playing, the article said, followed the smell and saw limbs sticking out of the dirt and trash.

The headline should have been more like �New mass graves being created today,� I thought. I also reflected that it came almost three years after the U.S. war began to defend against terrorism and Saddam Hussein�s weapons, and to plant democracy in the Fertile Crescent.

From lifeless to menacing
When I first arrived in Baghdad before the war, Iraq seemed lifeless. Baghdad felt like a city without oxygen, where those with big dreams couldn�t breathe or imagine a better life. Now, the country is very changed � in some ways for the better (as you'll see in the chart below) � but it has become equally menacing, terrifying and sinister.

I have been outside of Iraq for the past six weeks, covering the Winter Olympics in Torino and then taking some time off to decompress after three long years in the city of the Caliphs. I am heading back to Baghdad, just in time to cover the third anniversary of the invasion.

Being away has helped me understand how chaotic, confusing and impersonal it all seems from afar. Even the daily headlines seem to sigh with exhaustion: �Another 25 killed in car bombs,� or �Another four soldiers killed by roadside bombs.�

My Iraqis friends are exhausted, too. But all indications are this phase of sectarian violence or low-level civil war (or whatever we want to call it) will continue for at least several years, crushing more lives in its indifferent wake.

So three years on, was the war worth it? That's for you to decide. Meanwhile, here�s a brief look at a few things that have changed in Iraq since I began reporting from here full time in February 2003.*

I got friends "over there" and that are headed "over there" that didn't join the Armed forces on some gung ho shit. They just needed time to find themselves, and were not college type folk. When you get older, the options decrease. I know I even thought about that shit cus I needed to pay bills somehow and I could not find a job.

I remember 2 friends and I were looking for jobs for nearly 2 years. I ended up getting a temp job putting together pliers (who knew they had to be put together?), but they couldn't find anything and could not afford to drive the 2 hours one way to go to work for 12 hours like I did.

Life aint cut and dry. There is always gray area. I know they don't want to be out there, and really they didn't want to enlist- but like they say, "it's a job". They are doing it for a paycheck and to feed their wives-boyfriends-girlfriends, kids, etc.

*shrugs*

that's my stance and it's not debateable. It's personal. I can't say fuck the troops when it aint that simple.

shit, i have a master's degree, and even i contemplated joining the army (non-combat, the recruiter claimed). the pay is actually pretty good (and substantially augmented by housing and student loan debt forgiveness), the benefits are insane, and the experience is definitely valuable in the real world, especially for those who don't have a great education on their resume. fortunately for me, i had other options, but a LOT of people don't.

The military is a JOB, a means to make money. As soon as you start working in a country, you are working FOR that country. Directly or indirectly you're assisting in the development of that country.

The troops are no exception in this machine called America, and they shouldn't be any more of a target than the engineers designing military weapons, textile manufactures providing clothing/blankets/shoes, software/hardware companies providing technology, farmers providing food e.t.c Anyone working is part of this machine and is as much to blame. I'm against the war. Not for any moral reasons but because it's NOT a NECESSARY war. Bush will go down as one of the dumbest presidents in ANY countries history. We could have a booming economy without gitting involved in the BUSINESS of war-fare. I don't know if your being sarcastic but my family past and present is in the military so I definintely suport all of the troops. They are fighting for all of us and I know that I wouldn't want to do that job. It is a struggle for them too. I have way more respect for them than the drug dealers(who probably kill more people and destroy more families). I just pray that everyone's family comes home safe.

Like any other nation, a military's purpose is to serve and protect the homeland. And like any other nation, the military can be misused by any occupying government which is happening right now in this country. In almost all of your responses, you keep ignoring that aspect of this discussion. The fact that you can compare those who serve the military to those who join AL Qadea because they are joining for the same reasons (poverty and such) which is entirely false gives me the impression that you don't really understand how the military works.

You also fail to make a distinction between those who join the military and those who make political decisions, i.e - The president and the administration.

And for those of you who are anti-war, you don't have to be anti-military to be anti-war. The same people who say they love the troops and support American imperialism and aggression don't really love the troops because they are sending the troops to their own deaths and have no quams about it which is what i'am seeing right now.

There are no similarities between the two. Joining the military is different from joining Al Qadea. Even the reasons for joining those two are entirely different. And as i said before, your major flaw in your argument is ignoring the policy makers who misuse the military for this neo-imperialistic adventure they are on. First and foremost, thanks to all that have left comments on this board. I feel that it is MORE than important to talk on this subject. I hail from the Southside of Dallas, in an area called Singing Hills in Oak Cliff. Some of ya'll know where I'm from, and some might not. Think Magnolia (in New Orleans) times 10. Done seen alot of kin killed from gang and random violence and I know previous generations in my family have seen much worse at the hands of whites. Now a good deal of people that live there are under threat of violence or being forced out of their businesses by the rapidly multiplying Latino demographic that now dwarfs our population on the Southside of Dallas. Thats for another thread, though. I joined the Air Force in 1998....it was a good escape. One of my closest cousins was shot and killed while talking to his girlfriend on a payphone within walking distance of our Auntie's house not six months after going in. I thank Allah for allowing me another path. On the same token my eyes were closed to the bigger picture of the world in general.....All in all I have been blessed, but yes it does haunt me. At who's expense. I found the Deen (PRIOR to 9/11, but AFTER reenlisting...thus strapping my tail in for the ride). I was stationed at a base with NO aircraft or mission (at the time) in Guam for three years and then stationed at a military beach resort in Okinawa...pretty cake. By the time 2002 rolled around I was stationed in Tokyo and it was not long before I had to roll out to Afghanistan. Did my time and got back....all was good (so I thought). A couple of years later the call came to roll to Iraq....I thank Allah to this day (and everyday) that I did not serve in a combat capacity. Actually, I served in the prison...you see the rednecks in the Army effed-up so badly in Abu Ghraib the Air Force had to take over. I swore to Allah that if I made it out of that final deployment I would NEVER reenlist again...and that is what I did. I went some (somewhat) wild isht, but with Allah's blessing I am still standing. It has been rough for me and my wife but I am more than comfortable with my decision. I met so many officers and enlisted people while in that did NOT join to take part in what is going on now and I am happy that I am not a part of that establishment anymore. Like I said, I am happy that I found the Deen while I was in as well as found my calling....music. I began making beats and was blessed to work with (and STILL work with) a slew of Japanese and American artists....including one that is now featured here on this site.....Donnis. Yes, he was in too, and I am more than proud of him, as I know he joined under similar circumstances. And it is easy to say one is damned just for joining, but many of us truly did NOT know what was in store for us. And yes, under the laws on Islam and Christianity (or whatever faith you follow) service to ones country is permissible and NEEDED. But remember, when we jumped in under Clinton, isht was GRAVY....the only action we really was taking any part in was helping Muslims in Kosovo. But, the guilt of knowing what I was contributing to was heavy....trust when I say that! I still know alot of people still in....alot of them are in denial, others feel that ignorance really is bliss. But them times is approachin' and I want to know in the end I was on the right path and not part of the contribution. Salaam's.....
