"Letting gays marry is like letting me join the girl scouts"

reads the sign of the man protesting at my college.

I'm going to ask him if he'll be here tomorrow. That way I'll have enough time to put together a decent outfit.

What's the difference bt/n a gay marriage and an heterosexual one if they create a life built with love and understanding?

i mean hey marriage between woman and dog just legally solidifies the bondage of love so wus wrong with that if gay marriage is ok. i really think we are being biased here.

or interfaith marriage, while we're at it.

Can you imagine if someone compared interracial marriage to a woman marrying a dog?

You see black or gay. I see the struggle.

It's sad that you are judging a people's struggle rather than trying to stop the injustice.

Other than that I don't care if gays want to marry, they also have the right to get a divorce and pay alimony until the other half re marries too. Is that ok with you?

Of course if they get hitched they can get divorced. 50% of marriages currently end divorce so it's going to be tough for homosexuals to sully the sanctity of marriage more than we already have.

Personally, I think you fix the whole issue by taking the word marriage out of the law books and giving everyone civil unions. Let the Church define marriage and let the government make sure that all people get equal treatment under the law.

What really makes me laugh is how conservatives and Republican rally around the sanctity of marriage and have nominated a man who is divorced after getting picked up at a bar while he was still married. (And let's not forget that his action basically made him persona non grata in the house of the Conservative patron saints The Reagan's).

I don't thin that will be a valid argument. Whether interracial/inter-religous/cultural or whatever the fact is that it is still between a man and a woman. 2 men and 2 women cannot pro-create. Just like a woman and a dog cannot pro-create...its not natural...

What is "natural" is to bring a child into a loving setting, hetero, same-sex, or not.

I definately agree that bringing children into a loving environment is key to raising sound adults, but that is not what i was talking about...but since you touched on that subject...one of my greatest concerns is that (and im sure your counter argument can be made about heterosexuals but just hear me out for a sec) I'm not too sure how sound (psychologically & emotionally) some homosexuals are, I am not by any means saying that this is absolute fact or is the case for all but i beleive that many homosexuals are suffering from some pretty deep rooted issues that stem from childhood incidents (whether rape/molestation/self esteem, etc) that pretty much led them to that lifestyle in the first place...can two people of the same sex provide a safe nurturing environment for a child, sure, but its the underlying cause of what led them to that state- it is definately something that needs to be addressed...

And I would be inclined to agree w/you up until this:

"but i beleive that many homosexuals are suffering from some pretty deep rooted issues that stem from childhood incidents (whether rape/molestation/self esteem, etc) that pretty much led them to that lifestyle in the first place"

What happens in person's childhood affects how everyone will turn out in adulthood.

And if a gay "lifestyle" is what that person consider to be the best for them, so be it. There are many gay people who have had what they would consider to be "normal" childhoods, too.

Really?

I believe within all of us is something innate that tells us what is right/wrong, natural/unnatural and what is socially acceptable and what is not...

At times, it was socially acceptable to stone people, have slaves, perform human sacrifice, for women to stay in their place, etc.

Throughout history, what is socially acceptable at one time often becomes offensive or obviously wrong in the future.

Besides the fact that I'm not sure how you can tell how an animal consents, your stance that "We're all life" basically outlaws everything from farming to owning pets.

People are getting their rights taken away from them and you think the right discussion is putting forth a farcical argument. That's sad.

animals consent because they too agree to do things and we shouldnt own animals its just plan wrong. Animals and humans are getting their rights taken away everyday when a license to marriage between man and animal is denied.

In that statement I was not talking about how our minds are affected by the social times that we live in...in the simplest terms i'm sure that just about everyone in this world (across gender/racial/cultural barriers) would **think** that it is highly inapprorpiate for a human being to have sex with a dog....

I'm really not sure what this has to do with your point.

Do you really think that the same amount of people who are tolerant of gay sex would also be tolerant with bestiality?

It clearly isn't innate to think homosexuality is wrong since it's been around forever, was more acceptable in many ancient societies, and is still something which most people don't seem to think makes someone sub-human.

Bestiality is apparent in mythology and I think your being biased. what is wrong with bestiality? just because homosexuality is popular now doesnt mean it was before today. With the right movement we can have freedom and civil rights for everyone.

You're randomly citing mythology, stories which say things like the sun is a man in a chariot.

You're saying homosexuality is popular even though most people abhor it and people vote against it.

You compare humans with dogs.

Please point to me one argument you've made that hasn't been a sarcastic, tongue in cheek argument. Please show me somewhere where you've been part of a discussion rather than bringing up strawmen.

actually your wrong homosexuality started off as a subculture and is now somewhat popular culture. Bestiality is what homosexuality once was so if we form the right movement we can make bestiality popular too... why not?

That's the exact same argument used against same-sex marriage. It is blatant and obvious that it is an injustice. Whenever a right is taken away from the people, you should always be suspicious of it. Whenever there is a law that threatens to oppress people or hold them back from possessing the same rights as any other citizen, you should be suspicious. Your religion is no justification for your hatred and bigotry. Fuck your religion. Remember that time period when blacks were considered 3/5 of a person, were those bigots right because they thought it was morally wrong for blacks to be equal? AND YES discrimination in RACE is equivalent to discrimination in sexual orientation. Don't try to justify your hatred and prejudice and dress it up as something else. A fucking bigot is a fucking bigot. i think blacks that oppose same-sex marriage are fucking retarded or greatly misguided because we, of all people, should know the most of what it feels like to be oppressed and to be second-class citizens.
Wake the fuck up people, and get over your ignorant fucking selves.
God, I'm tired of bigots!

My point was that defending anti-gay sentiment by pointing to what's "natural" or "socially acceptable" is short sighted. People supported miscegenation laws called interracial marriage unnatural and considered those marriage socially unacceptable. Now we see those people are ignorant.

The same will happen in this civil rights situation.

so can we address the civil union of animal and man? so we can get justice for all. Please everyone should have the right to do what they want including sex with an animal of your choice, but through marriage of course. Legal is the way to go after all.

Does that make it OK?

If someone tortures animals in the privacy of their own home, should that be protected?

Saying that a person can basically do whatever they want in the privacy of their own home and shouldn't be infringed upon is liberalism going too far.

I'd just be careful about that sweeping statement because it can be taken the wrong way and you'll keep having to explain it as you did with me.

Also, there's the issue of consent. Say an adult has consensual sex with a 13 year old. Nobody's technically getting hurt. (The consent issue also rules out beastiality in my book. Although I would side with the naturalists and say that sex with a different animal seems obviously unnatural.)

but why do you say these bigoted things? if you really want to seperate us humans have genders and animals have gender the common denominator here is that we can have gender. If we decide being a male or female to have sex and marry the same or opposite gender animal whats wrong with that? lol

"The purity of public morals," the court declared, "the moral and physical development of both races….require that they should be kept distinct and separate… that connections and alliances so unnatural that God and nature seem to forbid them, should be prohibited by positive law, and be subject to no evasion.

That was the Virginia Supreme Court in 1878. For centuries, the idea of interracial marriage was considered unnatural.

The US Supreme Court didn't overturn these laws until 1967.

As for the procreation argument, should we ban birth control? That's unnatural. What about couples that don't want kids? Should they not be allowed to marry because they aren't willing to follow the natural order?

this is the problem I have when it comes to this issue, the minute someone comes with just a little bit of logic toward someone who has an opposite view point, they are immediately labeled as "your kind" or homophobic. One of the reasons why I never took them pro gays seriously, they can't handle objections too well

animals consent or agree all the time and they also disagree. For the animals and humans that agree they should be able to have relations right? Just like homosexuals right?

Legally marriage is a binding contract. Nothing more, nothing less. As far as animals and children, besides other flaws in this argument, they can not legally enter into a binding contract.

As far as gay marriage goes I can't care less either way.

"First, when was it ever proposed...that marriage does this? "...create a life built with love and understanding?"

Maybe I'm naive, but I always thought that's why people got married in the first place.

----------
"Legally marriage is a binding contract. Nothing more, nothing less."

That's a very literal argument. I would think that emotional attachment would play a role somewhere.

----------
"As far as animals and children, besides other flaws in this argument, they can not legally enter into a binding contract."

Agreed. This is a matter concerning two consenting adults.

----------
"As far as gay marriage goes I can't care less either way."

Then what are you arguing about?

Just because we've been brainwashed to the point of thinking everything is OK, doesn't make any of it right. Besides, that's dude's first ammendment right no matter what you were taught. And the first ammendment was put in place to protect unpopular opinion.

only, I'd change the word "besides" when I said "Besides, that's dude's first ammendment right..." to "however" which would indicate that even though I don't agree with dude, it is his right (according to The Constitution) to hold that sign and exercise his free speech.

ah well no as I'm neither gay nor Black. Latino and straight. I just wanted to see if anyone acted a fool. One of my best friends is gay and Black though. He'd like to get married some day.

If you can't see that this is just another sociological nuclear weapon to disrupt society even further for the elites to further mind fuck you into slavery, perhaps you didn't catch the Aaron Russo interview in which he reveals one of his conversations with Nathan Rockefeller (one of the Rocks...don't quote me on Nathan) where it was explained to him that giving equal rights to women was nothing more than a plot to separate and destroy the family unit.

which they succeeded in doing.

women ultimately were the guidance of the family, when women attained theiry "equal" status with men, they went to work with other men, who they spend more time with than their husbands and children...and vice versa for men...leading to adultery and divorce.

Now that it will be officially OK to be Gay...well...welcome to more of Babyblon - Chaos.

But hey, you go vote and make sure that gays and lesbians can marry, cause you know, it's really all about "equality".

no, I just told you. You just haven't realized it.

It's a game and I'm suprised no one can see through it.

Same sex partners already had the rights of a marriage, tax exemptions, etc, including the ability to raise children.

So I ask you again...WHAT WAS THIS ABOUT?

Equal rights...psh.

Now gays across the world are crying. Wow.

148. "Civil Unions are not equal to Marriages"
In response to Reply # 146

My initial response is that, if they were the same, separate but equal has been ruled on by the US Supreme Court and it has been deemed unconstitutional and unamerican.

But that doesn't matter since civil unions aren't equal.

- The Federal Government does not recognize civil unions. So gay couples get no federal benefits and can't file joint federal tax returns. Social security and pension benefits don't transfer over in case of death as they do with married spouses.

- Many states don't recognize civil unions. If you get hitched in Vermont and move to Connecticut, you can kiss your status and state benefits goodbye. Marriages are recognized in every state.

- There are issues with medical rights such as visitation and decision making when a patient is unconscious or comatose, nevermind health care benefits if you are a federal employee.

- Participants of civil unions can't sponsor their spouse for immigration.

- There are over a thousand benefits covered by marriage. There are around 300 covered by civil unions.

So basically, civil unions and separate and unequal to marriages. It is most certainly an equal rights issue. And honestly, I think most of the argument is over the word marriage and it's connection to religion. We just need to take the word marriage out of the law books and put it back into the hands of the religious community (people who might actually protect the sanctity of marriage from the decay that's already taken place because of the government).

In response to Reply # 121

like for me if guys are gay then whatever, do what you want.

but why the incessant need to display it everywhere. it doesn't have to be private, pda sure, but those parades are like full blown carnival type deals where people are just turned off. now should they even be concerned enough to be turned off? no. is it there place? no. but while there are some gay people that just kinda live their lives and being gay is just a part of it, there are others who seem to throw it in the face of those around them as would a fanatic of a belief or practice which just isn't cool. and while that's not everyone, of course it's the few that spoil the bunch.

but the parades are supported by a lot of people. they're packed out. maybe it's for fun and not serious. I don't know. But the main issue is why try to force it on everyone else like it's something everyone would do. It just seems like gay platforms are developing everywhere for gay people to express themselves freely, whats the point of a parade. and when i say parade, maybe i should mention not like a civil march or a gather but a half naked extravaganza type parade.

i guess i'm forced to be stuck in my ignorance then huh?

i mean if gay people are going to be flamboyant about it but not take the time to explain certain parts of the lifestyle, it only further substantiates preconceived misjudgements

while it'd be great for people to come to their senses on their own

its more than likely that gay people themselves could do a better job at conquering the ignorance

i respect all people expressing their views.

the only way we can figure things out on this planet is by communicating

while one of the problems of that is still people will hold on to their personal views which could conflict with others, there are times when better understanding is achieved and a mutual respect is developed

i respect the right to have a gay parade. i am sorry that gay people suffer for their lifestyle. i have made comments in real life and on here that are not in good taste towards gay people. that if anything reflects my ignorance and lack of class. it is frustrating to live with certain standards that are perceivable as normal. to be racist while practiced will never be normal. to speak misunderstandings about gay people will because the vast majority doesn't understand the gay culture. it's hard to see it as normal if only because of the milennia of established male-female culture dominance. for gay culture to penetrate that even a little, there must be people willing on both sides to listen to each other for change.

as hard as it may be to believe this i love gay people. the people. maybe i'm decieved either in the feelings i have against the choices, or that i actually like a person if i don't honor his choices, but i've partied in gay clubs. when i go to house clubs i dance next to gay guys because the white people who stand in the middle of the floor spilling their drinks or dancing into me. i'm not saying that to say "i have gay friends, i'm cool" i'm saying that to say i'm conflicted in my views, i don't know, i only know what i've learned in this time here on this planet and the only way i'll know different is if i ask or experience (going to a parade, etc.).

maybe i will one day.

but today i'm asking you.

and i don't know if you're gay or not but you're defensive, so i'm assuming you know more than me.

I don't really care much about parades, they never did anything for me, and even sometimes seemd unnecessary. But what I turn the tables in asking you, how come heterosexuality is shoved down the throats of society. how come heterosexuality is so strongly imposed on society? if we speak of eqaulity we must look at it objectively.

It kills me that 60% of California black voters voted Yes on prop 8. It shows me how many blacks are greatly brainwashed by the lies and jive that their churches peddle to them and are easily bamboozled into embracing that hypocrisy. That it is OK to discriminate, retract rights, and mistread a A GROUP OF AMERICANS and reduce them to SECOND-CLASS citizenship- and yet no even acknowledge how hard it was for we, as black people to overcome those same legal obstacles.

And YES WE CAN COMPRARE race to sexual orientation. Oppression is oppression, you can't say- I stand against all injustices except when it comes to gay niggas. That's a horrible hypocrisy! It really can be regarded as gender discrimination, so supporters of prop. 8 will historically be regarded as bigots and hateful people just like men who refused to give women rights, slave-owners, white supremacist from the '50s and '60s, and other bigots of American history. Blacks can try to deny it if they want, but it's hard to look at oneself in the mirror and admit that one have a prejudice and needs to change and truly follow the word of the lord.

well homosexuality was always a behind closed doors thing. there was a certain stigma except for maybe a few cultures. at least in America and Europe it was always discouraged. that's never really been challenged until recently. additionally since the majority is heterosexual, the media like its treatment of other minorities are represented less. and since media reinforces beliefs, we're in a cycle. not that its right, but that's going to take a long time to change given peoples opinions aren't easily changed.

its not exactly lies and jive that the churches peddle. they're not really the only ones condemning it. people just let them be the scapegoat while they reap the benefits. homosexuality is only recently being accepted in heterosexual eyes and even then not completely. i mean you saw the vote stats. america spoke. maybe progressive countries like the Netherlands are better with their treatment of gay and lesbian couples but they also have a different treatment of sex and marijuana which America is nowhere near following either. i don't think it's second class citizenship though. is it all the about the taxes? it creates a whole new dynamic. a new set of freedoms and problems. black people were slaves. i don't recall any gay people ever dealing with anything close to what that entailed. maybe a better claim would be to a disability. not that being gay is a disability but there are plenty of people that suffer from them and you don't know. just like being gay. i could be gay my whole life and no one would know. people may know you're black but you could hide being gay. not that you'd want to but you're afforded that opportunity.

no we can't. it is and will never be the same. it might not be equal or fair but its not comparable to race. it's more comparable to religious opression. some of those religious people feel they were born that way and that they'll say they were born in heaven if asked. not to say thats the same as being born gay. but both groups have strong convictions and both could pull an Anne Frank if need be. it's not hypocrisy because there are those out there that believe that 4 people should be united. two married couple swingers that are both bi. they're not fighting for anything but maybe that'd be the next step. but they're also not losing out on the tax thing since at least they're married to someone. maybe you're right, maybe it will be looked like that and we're all a bunch of people calling the earth flat. i like soulhonky's solution and just removing the word marriage from the books altogether and just let anyone have a civil union if they want. and let religions deal with "marriage." would that be cool? i'd be down with that.

No on 8 proponents are nervous and the Florida constitution is probably going to get amended to ban gay marriage as well.

isn't seeing the whole picture. It's the same reason I wrote LOL when someone said that homosexuality was "popular" today. I can only imagine what it would be like to tell your friends and family you're gay but I'd have to think that the word to describe it wouldn't be "popular".

To me, banning gay marriage and saying "Well they can have civil unions" is separate but equal all over again. There's no way to argue that it isn't discrimination. (Nevermind the fact that having the government define marriage has done more to ruin the sanctity of marriage than gays ever could).

Then again, I don't think the supporters of gay marriage did themselves any favors by basically rubbing the Cali Supreme Court ruling in people's faces. That "Whether you like it or not" clip with the Mayor of San Fran probably turned off a lot of voters.

I am not sure if anyone has said this before(i do not have time to read entire post) but i think the Gay marriage ban that just passed in California was allowed to happen so they can take it to the federal level.
I think gay marraige will become a reality in all 50 states.
Yeah i can see Obama doing this since he has already been distanced from the black church due to the Wright affair.

Gay rights groups spent tens of millions to oppose this bill. They are currently fighting to repeal it or argue that it required 60% of the vote or has to pass legislature since it was a complete revision and not just an amendment. Nobody was allowing it to pass for some ulterior motive. They wanted it shot down.

Also, Obama has said he opposes gay marriage and isn't likely to make any huge waves on unpopular social issues in his first couple of years.

The one thing he can do is revise the Defense of Marriage Act and have the Federal government recognize civil unions. That will make civil union rights closer to marriage rights and make it possible for states to do the common sense thing: giver EVERYONE civil unions, take the word marriage out of the law and let the religious community define/protect it.

i'm surprised it didn't pass but didn't know about the lobbying being done. makes sense.

yeah i can't see that happening either yet, maybe after his term(s) though.

that is an excellent solution. that would definitely separate church and state a little more as its supposed to be.

Oh I agree that is an excellent solution but can you really count on them idiots in D.C. to agree on doing what is best much less put it into law. Was the bank bailout the best solution for the current economic crisis?

Because the only way to get the argument away from whether we should redefine "marriage" is for the Federal government to make civil unions completely equal (legally speaking) to marriage rights.

If that doesn't happen, the conversations on the state level will be the pointless give and take over the word marriage which I think is an argument that won't win (and honestly, on a certain level, shouldn't win).

My theory is since Clay Aiken done came out of the closet other gay christians will. Next, Kanye West will come out of the closet and that will soften the black church into accepting gay marriage. Oh I know i really do sound ridiculous...we will see tho.
Oh LoveLockdown is gay as shit, lol. Did you see the post in the Lesson? People was intellectualizing on it. Reading all kind of *african consciousness* type stuff into it, lol. Kanye ain't never been deep. Them idiots.
