"OkayArtists for Obama: Talib Kweli, Common, ?uestlove, The Roots"

This site launched in 1999 so we've seen 2 Presidential Elections come and go. And while none of us supported (or voted for) Bush in either the 2000 or 2004 Elections, we chose to stay non-partisan as a company. This year, Okaypalyer is doing things differently by coming out on record in support of one candidate, Barak Obama. The artists we ride with (other than maybe Lupe) are already on board. Read new statements from Kweli and ?uestlove below. Many are already aware of the support Common is giving Obama and The Roots will be doing events in support of him this year as well.

Blog Won-OH-BAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Current mood: optimistic

ladies and gentleman.
super tuesday is upon us.
and we have a responsibility.

this is not a plee to you vote as i vote or do as i do.
(coughcoughbarack!coughcough)

just kidding.....

--well i'm not.

for someone so connected to an organization that's seen as "political" very rarely have i ever laid my personal politics on the line like this.

i mean personally? i've always rode that ever so easy "politicians are full of shit" stance so long that i actually numbed myself of all political activity in the past 5 to 6 years.

none of which has stopped any community work i've been connected to. but when it comes to actual issues that i feel personally effects me, it saddens me that i really don't look to my government for solutions.

"and what issues effect you personally mr-grammy-on-the-shelf-and-all-the-nikes-you can-eat?"

plenty.

i come from the school of "if my brother's life isn't fine then none of our lives are fine".

of course i feel our education system has been out of wack for as long as i've been alive....and the duration of my parents lifetime.---and before that it was damn near illegal for black people to be educated in this very country.

without putting people's business out there---i got people in my organization now whom i've known since they were 8 years old. and the nightmare stories i've heard about concerning their local public schools moved me enough to arrange it so that their parents can use my address so that their children can have access to the "better" schools in the neighborhood (hey--i agree, the day that black people stop using the "by any means even if i break the law to do what i feel is right" method is a day that is long time coming.)-it was worth all the effort put in the arrange such a scheme. it's either watch them die or run after an opportunity to save some lives.

for those of you really in the dark just watch season 4 of The Wire. if THAT shit don't scare you straight then im sorry....you dont have a soul. i've travelled the globe 20 times over in my life and it amazes me the amount of effort that the government puts into its education in other countries. over in france, argentina, norway, and denmark they dont even charge college tuition!!!

most of you people have Phrenology so no need to go through "Water" again and again.

but as a cat who knows mad drug "offenders" i've never agreed with the issues of "jail as rehab" that our government issues time and time again to non violent offenders. for starters you get the same shit in jail as you do in the outside world....so no rehab there.

and the racist double standard of new york rockefeller laws have NEVER gone down smooth with me (basically those caught with crack cocaine powder get harsher sentences than those caught with regular cocaine----in case you live on another planet...crack is a cheaper affordable substance primarily used by people of color--as opposed to the higher echelon white powder substance used by well....need i spell this out?)

pretty much i gotta go through some sort of profiling (albeit not to the level of buff, ny----shit like that happens to me about once every other year.....which already is 14 times too much) with the authorities. it happens so much that i swore the only shit that kept me calm during that whole ordeal was the false premise of "i guess they are just doing their jobs"----shame i gotta lie to myself to keep my sanity. but seriously.....im certain that most white americans dont get anxiety to the neat point of instant colonics whenever they see cops in their rear view mirror.....i mean im as straight as 6:00 and i even i feel like a drug cartel making a run if i get behind the wheel with a cop running my plates behind me.

have i been conditioned to just accept that is how life is? and take it?

look i promised i wasn't going to turn this into the "who will ahmir back blog"---

but i know its so easy to dismiss this election as a meaningless process. i mean i dont even know why im doing this.

one day i woke up and i just.....

well i felt inspired.

i heard the words of Senator Obama and i really felt like he was being "REAL" with me. not just saying shit i wanna hear while he lays his own agenda into effect while the wool is pulled over my eyes.

and although im not playing the smear game....i'd wish people would cut the "does he have experiene?!?!? card. all these revisionists are mistaking hill's 8 years as first lady as a sign of experience. meanwhile his list of community services goes above and beyond the call of duty.

---actually im really about to put my money where my mouth is. i went to the los angeles headquarters and volunteered my services. its almost 1am and im finna to drive door to door to put pamphlets and voting information on the doors of the potential voters.

we finally have a chance to truly make a change this upcoming election.

i BEG of you people that are able to vote on super tuesday to vote

please!

(pardon the run on sentances....its been a long day)

In response to Reply # 0
Tue Feb-05-08 11:05 AM by Talib Kweli BKMC

It is the last year of the Bush administration and thank God. I usually rail against being described as simply "political rapper", and I haven't voted since Bill Clinton first ran for President. I was following the tradition that Black Americans have had of voting for democrats since we got the right in 1964(temporarily). Then, Clinton, as president's go, seemed better than Bush Sr., but I did not like his policies in Sudan or the constant bombing of Iraq. I also did not like the way our government dragged us thru the Lewinsky scandal. I felt betrayed by the system, and I stopped voting, no longer accepting of the lesser of two evils. I knew the two party system was designed to fail us. I knew that politicians must lie for a living, because it would be impossible to make good on their promises. I knew about the lobbyists and the PAC. I did not make it my issue, but if someone asked me, I would explain why I didn't vote. Most of the time people talked to me like I lost my mind, but every once and awhile someone understood. I knew that our ancestors fought and died for the right to vote, but I didn't feel like voting for the lesser of two evils in a broken system was the proper way to honor them. It was pageantry, and I wasn't with it. I wasn't with Vote or Die, because I knew that voting itself, with no real knowledge of who is paying these candidates to run million dollar a day campaigns, is far from a revolutionary act. I haven't even started to talk about the electoral college that they taught us about in grade school. In this republic, delegates votes are counted, and states with more population have more votes. You can technically have more votes, but lose the election. When the verdict is in question, the Supreme Court decides, as they did when Al Gore clearly won the election but lost due to bipartisan bullshit. The bankers of the world pay our politicians, and often tailor laws and regulations to line their own pockets. I have often stated that I cannot participate in a system that not only is designed to see me fail, but corrupts itself as well.

This was all before Barack Obama threw his hat in the ring. I, like many, appreciated his effort from the sidelines, watching him do the dance on the news. I found myself relating to him and enjoying hearing him speak, but I still remained distrustful of politicians in general. I felt like I could serve my community in many ways on a grassroots level that proceeded politics. I started to see the Obama campaign doing that grassroots work. I hear him speaking about poor people, the environment, things that I haven't heard from politicians who have electability. My criticism of the political system is that it siphons out rational thought because who have to be all things to all people. You can't stand for anything doing that. I remember when Obama spoke out against the war, early. I think the time he spent as a civil rights attorney on Chicago's south side gives him a unique perspective. I often hear about his lack of experience, but his experience is one that I most closely identify with. I'm not saying I could be president, but I am saying that our government could use a new energy. In order for a revolution to happen, you need revolutionary writers, soldiers, teachers, poets, musicians, garbagemen, cab drivers, politicians, across the board. Everyone will not always agree, but the things we agree on, we should strengthen. When I was younger, none of this really mattered. Now I have two beautiful children, and Barack Obama is an incredibly positive influence on them. I want them to know they can be anything they want.

With that said, I still feel the same as I do about the political system, and one man can't change it. But this man deserves our support nonetheless. I appreciate what he's doing, and there comes a time in history when change is necessary for all of us to prosper. I can't be critical of a society that is scared of change, but be stubborn in my ways for the sake of it. I support Barack Obama and encourage others to take a real look at his campaign so they can come to their own conclusions. I am not delusional about what the office of the president represents, but my support for him is just that, support for someone speaking my language amidst an ocean of doubletalk. Thank you for your time.

Uh..Bruh,

Voting for O'bama will not change the overall mental enslavement of Africans in America. This will not stop Black people from killing themselves, consuming and spending money with people who despise them, the continuous incarceration of Black people, the continue raping of the African continent, the mis-education of Black/Afrikan children and the total breakdown of the infrastructure of the Black community!!!!???

Black folks STILL ARE WAITING FOR SOME MESSIAH to come save them and take them to some mystical promise land.

obama's in dead heat with hill. he's got more money, and is more likely to win the next couple states.

hope is in the air, playboy. i know it seems too good to be true, but stop being pessimistic and actually realize that we could potentially change our government in a big way this election. going from a bush to an obama? unheard of. and yet he's ahead of mccain in match-up polls.

save yourself you damned fool. anyone waiting to be saved is already
too far lost. No one human being can "change the overall mental
enslavement of Africans in America." While I don't think anyone
should vote for Obama merely because he is Black, the symbolism
would have a serious impact. This so-called mental enslavement
is on the outs with the younger generation. Children will grow up
and an African-American will be the President and you don't think
that will have a positive mental and emotional impact? Only the "Black Community"
(if that even actually exists) can save itself, not no "Messiah" or President
or rapper or Reverend. I agree with Kweli about being
skeptical when it comes to the Presidency but this is an opportunity
to try something brand new and all it takes is a simple walk to the
voting booth. Why not give him a chance?

i feel you. thats why im with the Green Party and Cynthia McKinney. we need to stop waiting for TV to tell us that someone is worth our vote, Obama is still the lesser of two evils, he's just black, and he's just a poster child for the democrats. its just happens that any person that the democrats had this year would of been put on the same pedestal, because this 2 party dictatorship wants you to believe you have choice, and since bush can't run again, and the entire world was so upset with his policies, and people have the internet now and we find out about crimes against humanity faster, they need a democrat to win to keep people thinking that things are getting better, but they are not. obama wants less war in iraq and more in Afghanistan and Pakistan, i want no war. how bout that?

we need more than change.
we need justice.
we need an end to war.
we need universal health care.
we need a livable wage.
we need the Green Party.
we need Cynthia McKinney.
We need Rosa Clemente.

check out this video,
its political hip hop at its best,
all about who you really should vote for.

Whooo that was sick.

I agree that Obama should be our next president, and personally I think he will be.

Cause you was on that "eff a vote" tip for a minute.

Hard.

I pay celeb "endorsements" NO attention at all. But I would often think about your history of non-endorsement.

I thought your stance was dangerous. And that was simply because of the platform that you have. Three things:

1)I agree that voting isn't necessarily revolutionary.

2)I also don't think that 1 person sitting out an election is COUNTERrevolutionary.

3)I don't think that celeb endorsements are revolutionary.

But when the BKMC is getting pub about how he doesn't vote and doesn't think it's important, that's some counterrevolutionary ish. I'm sure that was never your intention or desire, but there are thousands of people who hang off your every word.

One man staying at home is a lot different that one man encouraging (however unintentionally) potentially tens of thousands of people to just opt out.

It was somewhat irresponsible.

So this actually means something. Thanks for sharing.

He clearly says how in the past he never cared about politicians, but this is the first time hes been inspired. Can you not clearly see that? Or does he have to live in the same mindset he did 5+ years ago

26. "Obama = Hypocrite"
In response to Reply # 2

This is where you guys are wrong and I don't want to accuse you of just voting for Obama because he is black, but how can you not see through the bullshit?? Obama is no different than Hillary or basically any other contender in the race, his image is merely repackaged to appeal to so-called progressives.

He is a hypocrite. He has admitted to doing cocaine and marijuana in the past. Yet he does not want to end the War on Drugs, decriminalize marijuana or pardon non-violent drug offenders. By that logic, Obama thinks that the country would be a better place if he had gone to prison for doing drugs. Do you think an ex-felon Obama would be running for president?? The War on Drugs is a tremendous waste of taxpayer money and one of the most detrimental problems facing the African-American community today.

Barack will not commit to removing the troops from Iraq by 2013, he has voted for continued funding of the war, he voted for reauthorization of the Patriot Act and he has said nothing to address this country's out of control spending. How do you expect him to pay for all his proposed government programs and education plan??

C'mon guys. Based on your music (Game Theory!) and stuff in the past that you both have said including your ability to see through the lie that is official story of 9/11, I expected much better from you guys. I honestly hope Barack does win and not because I want to see whether or not he will get assassinated a la Byron Crawford, but because I want to see how much of a colossal failure and disappointment he will be to all the stupid Democrats and the African-American community.

>so who are you voting for then?

Ron Paul. I also like Dennis Kucinich. I am not completely 100% convinced by either of their domestic policies, but they are both honest men who speak the truth and most importantly they would end the war, restore our civil liberties, end the War on Drugs, and hopefully attend to our monetary policy. Despite Ron Paul's ideal intention to wipe out many gov't programs, he has said that if elected his primary objective would simply be to end the war and use the money to take care of people at home. He would not put anybody out in the streets. Also, it was great to see Kucinich yesterday coming out and advocating for the abolition of Federal Reserve.

>***so you WANT him to con't the War on Drugs, but NOT

How did you misinterpret this? If you read closely, I mean that Obama would not End the War Drugs, would not decriminalize weed and would not pardon non-violent offenders. I personally would like to see all these policies overturned.

>***I could be wrong, but using drugs isn't a felon... though
>selling and buying with the intent to sell is.

You are wrong. Straight from Wikipedia:
Drug possession is the crime of having one or more illegal drugs in one's possession, either for personal use, distribution, sale or otherwise. Illegal drugs fall into different categories and sentences vary depending on the amount, type of drug, circumstances, and jurisdiction.

>***Therefore you want him to END the War on Drugs, right? now
>I'm really confused.

Addressed above.

>where's the hypocrisy in this?
Obama constantly promises peace and ending the war but this is nothing but empty campaign rhetoric. He won't pull the troops out by 2013 and he has consistenly voted to fund the war. He calls Iran a "grave threat to all of us" and has threatened military action despite their nonexistent nuclear weapons program and the fact that they pose no national security threat to us whatsoever. In addition, based on his campaign finance records, he's taken millions from defense contractors and tons of other PACs and lobbyists despite his claims that he does not lobbyist money. It's a straight up lie.

Fam, it's politics... big bank takes little bank, every time. And what makes his rhetoric less credible than Ron Paul's "nobody on the street", or George Bush's "READ MY LIPS, NO NEW TAXES!!"

You are right. Under the current political system in this country it never will. That doesn't mean that the Federal Reserve and its manipulation of our monetary policy hasn't been extremely detrimental to this country's economy and that the issue shouldn't be addressed.

>Fam, it's politics... big bank takes little bank, every time.

You don't see Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich taking any lobbyist money. They are not bought out by the establishment and coporate interests.

>And what makes his rhetoric less credible than Ron Paul's
>"nobody on the street", or George Bush's "READ MY LIPS, NO NEW
>TAXES!!"

Umm...voting record. Ron Paul has the most consisent voting record in Congress. He has been around since the 70's. Dude knows what he's talking about. I have met Ron Paul, I have read his essays, listened to literally dozens, if not hundreds of his speeches and he comes off as an extremely honest and educated individual. His intelligence on the economy and history is unparalleled by any other presidential candidate. At the debates he is the only candidate using rational justifications to back up his beliefs.

He always voted against the War in Iraq and subsequent funding. He has never voted for a tax increase or the Patriot Act. He has also always preached a foreign policy of non-intervention. He returns part of his salary every year back to the government. Despite the fact that over the years he has always been an outcast and has had unconventional beliefs, he has stuck to his convictions and the same issues that he brought up back in the 70's and 80's are still hauntingly relevant today.

Obama has voted to fund the war and has said he would not guarantee a troop pullout by 2013. Whereas Ron Paul provides ample justifications - economically and morally for opposing the war, Obama simply claims the war was unwise and should end...yet promotes continued intervention abroad in the Middle East and Pakistan.

If you see him in those terms already I don't think he will dissapoint you whatever the outcome of the election. While I can understand many members being rooted on the "race" issue of the candidate are you not concerned with the fact that no matter who wins you still will have an administration that has an appaling foreign policy. I mean yes I hope Obama does get into office and I agree with some of the other comments about his appointment being an inspiration to the youth however how can he help the black community if his administration continiues to support such bad foreign policy?

Black people all over the world...what about thier "black communities".

PREFACE: just in case you missed this in the 57 other places it's been posted, here it is again. it's Obama. and it is the "how you can participate in the process" thread. Read on...

if you're on the east coast, you're probably about to clock out for the day.

which means you still have a few hours to do some phonebanking to get out the vote for OBAMA in those states in the central, mountain and pacific time zones that are holding primaries today.

this shit is mad easy. you need:

1) some internet
2) a phone
3) some guts

the third one isn't as crucial as the first two, but it does help. go here:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/feb5calling

Team Barack's web site will walk you through the process (it might take 6 minutes to get registered and started) and it will give you a set of phone numbers to call (maybe 20 or so) as well as a script to read from and some tracking prompts for the calls you make.

you can, of course, call more than 20 people if you're up for it. polls are open til 7 local time in most states. if you're calling colorado, their caucus actually starts at 6:30 local time, so the sooner you make those calls, the better.

GOTV, son. it's the okayplayer way.

POST-SCRIPT: if you do live in one of the states that is voting today, then pester the hell out of all your peoples who might be registered dems (or, at least, eligible to vote in your state's democratic primary/caucus). this would include: calling them, texting them, making the case for obama and driving them to the polling place/caucus. obviously, you can't pull the lever for them, but do tell 'em that you won't drive them home if they don't vote for obama. (okay, forget i said that last part, but, seriously, if you have to give someone a ride in order for them to vote today, do it. that's what it means to really GOTV.) SI, SE PUEDE!

all for obama. one thing i find interesting though: everyone talks about the education system being f'd, and yes, as a teacher in b-more i agree with the assessment. but what do people do?

i have taught high school for 5 years in a tough (but not horrible) baltimore school. over the past 4 years i have invited a bunch of okayplayer artists to speak to my students while they are in town for gigs. i have never had a response.

i understand that everyone is busy, and we all know that OKP heads work more diligently than anyone else in the business. but, from my perspective, a 30 minute talk to my at-risk student about goal-setting, overcoming obstacles, etc can accomplish a whole hell of a lot.

so for anyone who reads this, whether you are a musician, lawyer, mechanic, or anything else under the sun, go do something. if you think teenagers today are out of control volunteer a few minutes at a local school. share some knowledge. show that you care. i bet you will learn a lot too....
peace

but I'll speak @ your school. I'm 30 mins. south of baltimore. That's God's work you are doing. just couldn't bring myself to sign up, although I stared @ that website for the program Presbylewski is doing for DAYS @ a time during S4 of the Wire. I knew it was bad up there, but I guess that just brought it home for me. I know a thing or two about overcoming obstacles. They won't recognize me, like a ?love, or Kweli, but I'm sure that I could offer them something +. Inbox if you still need people to come out.

i've been thinking...has anyone ever heard Jay speak up on a candidate or Obama in particular? Wouldn't his endorsement have an impact? Maybe he doesn't want to get involved. Or maybe he's a black republican with the money he got comin' in.
I wonder why we haven't heard from him about this

You've addressed every poster in Activist that's said anything negative about Obama, regardless of how much they have participated in the discussion or their indivivdual post count.

Never really had an issue with the Bamma supporters, just their Gestapo tactics.

So really.. who's following who????

52. "Why I Will Vote For Obama"
In response to Reply # 0

I usually don't vote.

I don't vote because it's a form of idolatry and it's all "image".
Contrary to peoples overwhelming desire to "believe" in something - None of these people running for office have control over anything.

But with Obama running , and the lack of assertive educated black adults in the media - simply voting for his "image" is actually a "gain". The image in and of itself turns out to be something positive.

So thats why I will probably vote for him - Simply for the image.

People will pursue whatever they perceive to be in their own interests - and this is always changing because everything in life is in constant motion.

Peace Okayplayers,

For those that may not know me my name is L-Mani S. Viney, Ive been a member of this group since Angee used to respond to everyone's emails. Since then, I've gotten old and left this thing for all of you (LOL) but now I've come back cause I need your help.

As you know we are in a political situation thats crossing issues of race, class, and downright shady politics. It's gotten mad personal and a lot of people are ready to fight and PA happens to be the next big stage.

A few of my peoples have formed a group called the Obama Coalition. Our goal is to deliver 1.5 Million voters for Obama. Right now we need someone revolutionary minded PA fam thats down for the cause.

It will not require alot of your time. Just your passion for wanting to see Obama in the White House or kicking Clinton's ass. Whichever comes First.

With that said, please hit me up at LManiV@aol.com or 201-965-8732 when you all get the opportunity. We got the ball rolling so far and we mean to bring it all the way.

Peace
L-Mani

A couple of years back I thought I seen it all with Puffy's "Vote or DIE" deal, now we got Obama running, and OKP's could play a significant role in getting him in for November. You drop a callabo album, of okayplayer artists suppoprting Obama ... like in September ... and he's a winner. No question. But at the same time, electing a black president will rip this country apart. Seriously, if 5% of white americans say "Hell No !!" to a black president, and rebel, then the built up racial tension in America will explode. Real Sh!t. If Obama gets popped, it'll be Race War 2000. Its not a big deal to be president any way (whose the pres. of the UN ... an african) its only a "token" posistion. It seems like they're ushering in the anti-christ. Be it black or white ... a step away from Bush is what majority of Americans want. No matter what color the Prez, he's basically still going to be BS. Black people already know how we sellout each other anyway, so Obama is going to be Obama. If anything ... black conciousness should rise, black power and those african madallions should be a fad again. OKP artists entire catalougues would go triple ..4x 5x platinum ... They'll finally get their stage/due.
