"College Football Bowl Season Part 1"

The NFL's unceasing intrusion into every single day we have off work has left us with a compressed schedule, so talk about them as you see them

WVU spanked UNC in all 3 phases, and Louisville just gifted USC a TD off a fumble inside their own 20

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

there was a time when players were sold bowl games were the end all be all and win one for the gipper and shit.

there was definitely some psychology involved in making players believe they had to play in bowl games.

once players realized draft stock wouldn’t take a hit players started opting out in high numbers.

but once the playoffs started it always made sense to do it the traditional way with a bracket and not 4 handpicked teams.

but then again, do they really care if their team misses the playoffs and a star player doesn’t play in the Tidy Toilet Bowl

I would think a highly drafted player is of more value for recruiting than a bowl win on Dec 27th.

but yeah, not sure how you go to lengths to enforce that once the playoff field opens up to 12 teams next season (the donors will not be thrilled about being the 13th best team anyway)

also, the good schools will just use it as a recruiting tactic against anybody trying to force players to finish out non-playoff bowl games

and legally, I believe you cannot put any sort of on-field clauses in a NIL agreement so who knows who that would work out

there really is no reason to risk injury or hurt your draft stock if you are at a top 10 pick

which is why I don’t think playoffs are to blame for bowl games losing their luster.

its not the 80’s anymore.. bowls are played out.

the 22nd team isnt realistically going to be able to compete for a title

it's just going to become a professional league where the only thing that matters is money. but without the parity of the NFL.

Sitting out multiple regular season games when your team is eliminated from the playoffs, I could potentially see NFLteams/scouts downgrade a player but just sitting out a playoff game? I doubt they would care much.

how much of a downgrade (if any) are you expecting from milton to nico?

Milton was solid this season -- a caretaker, not a difference-maker, who valued the ball but was let down by inconsistent receiver play and some of his own issues (20-yard+ accuracy was not always great, not an anticipation thrower).

Nico had a little mop up duty this season that I've watched, he does show very good pocket presence for his age and I'd like to see him run more than Milton did (Milton is big and straight-line fast but not the most elusive, willing or natural runner). he's a sneaky runner just as long as he slides, because he needs another 10-15 pounds to be a season-long starter IMO.

Vols will be down their top two backs but it was a rotation anyway and Dylan Sampson was one of the best third-down backs in the SEC whenever he got time.

Tennessee's receivers had issues winning 1v1 and holding onto the ball, which I didn't expect coming into the year, so that may be an issue because I doubt their connection with Nico has gotten enough work.

fortunately most of Tennessee's OL will play. the real problem is Iowa is not really an opt-out/transfer portal team so I expect their best effort on defense, which is challenging for a freshman's first start.

I think there will be some good, some bad -- I wouldn't necessarily count on Tennessee to win this game, but I'm more optimistic that Nico will play solidly than lay a huge egg. we'll see.

the line dropped 2.5 points and moved through 7 after milton was announced out which seemed like a lot.

so far we're seeing some of these young qb's come in w/o a huge drop offl. avery johnson looks great. we'll see what jackson arnold and devin brown can do.

Peach Bowl. My dad is a sports junkie, but the only team he’s ever truly passionate about watching and following is PSU. He hasn’t been to a bowl game since the 70s, when both my parents attended PSU. We figured we’d make a fun little vacation out of it.

I’ve been to ATL twice in my life - both times visiting a good friend of mine. Never with family and kids. My wife has never visited and has been listening to the Welcome to Atlanta remix non stop these past few weeks. Her number one goal is to find a fun club and good food. Recommendations welcome. We’ll be staying in Mid-town.

when you say fun club, what kind of music, how much dancing will you be doing, and how much breathing room do you require?

unfortunately i cant help you with any newer restaurants really, been away too long. just the "classics" like Highland Bakery, Mary Mac's, Six Feet Under, Fox Broa, etc

If it helps, I’m 41 and my wife is 36. She’s 6 months pregnant so drinking won’t be involved for her, and she won’t be able to go too hard on the dance floor…though she’ll try. If we get an hour in, I’d consider that a win.

She’s trying to hit up black owned/friendly clubs/restaurants too.

Those sound like good options. We usually don’t struggle finding good restaurants, but any recommendations are certainly welcome…especially good breakfast spots.

Thanks for the recommendations!

2024
Aug. 31 vs. Ohio
Sept. 21 at Army West Point
TBD at UConn
TBD vs. Holy Cross

ACC home games: Miami, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Stanford
ACC away games: Boston College, Pitt, Cal, NC State

that Army game has since been cancelled due to their playing an AAC schedule next year, but...yeesh.

a home game against Georgia Tech is THE biggest game of the whole year. no Clemson, bo UNC, no FSU, no Louisville, no ND.

its a joke honestly.

I’ve definitely seen it with some Michigan fans re: Cade, and I don’t think it’s fair because he got us such success in 2021. I thought Iowa was a great fit for him, and with a new coordinator maybe he’ll ball out next year after recovering from the injury.

nor do I really care. and not sure why mich fans are so consumed by it either. but they're consumed by a lot of weird shit nowadays.

all i know is that cfb is now a business. which is what everyone clamored for. so if a player needs to make a business decision and secure his spot and get his bag elsewhere then you can't turn around and get all righteous about it. if the bowl games are meaningless then they're meaningless.

beyond that. the way mccord and osu players are treated by the fanbase is completely disgusting. so if they wanna bail and head someplace where there is a greater appreciation I'm not going to fault them call them a bitch on the way out.

>contrast Cade's behavior with Jayden de Laura at Arizona

poor comparisons given that both of these guys were benched midseason.

i dont care if someone leaves. i think youve severely misinterpreted what i was saying. I wouldve dipped if i were him too. We agree on all that 100%.

But a guy in that position acting like a dick (Cade McNamara), is still just a guy acting like a dick.

>poor comparisons given that both of these guys were benched

Im not comparing them to Kyle McCord. I was comparing them to each other and being complimentary to the way de Laura handled his demotion.

and contrasting that with Mccord's departure.

I know nothing of how Cade left. I had assumed it was on good terms because I generally see mich fans riding for the kid and predicting him to ball out at iowa (lol). As is the style of the fanbase to support their players and coaches to a bizarre level.

meanwhile mccord is getting bottles thrown at him and his family on the way out. as is the style of the fanbase.

ive never shitted on mccord and im not gonna shit on him on the way out. he gave it his best. osu just wasn't the spot for him and it's on Day for not recognizing that. Day needed to hit the portal for a qb last year, not in 2024 with his job hanging by a thread.

i think mccord should do ok at cuse. the lights wont be nearly as bright and there will be a drop-off in competition. his mobility will be better if his ankles heal up. he's not nearly as bad of an athlete as he showed down the stretch this year.

and fwiw i think it's better that cade didn't play for iowa this year. it wouldn't have gone well and much of that wouldnt have been any fault of his own.

that would be completely absurd and thats without even taking into account the extracurricular shenanigans that took place

there's a limit to how much this can be rehashed (and I think we've passed that threshold) but mccord wasnt very good. he got chased out of town and has left this team in a lurch that is quite glaring if you turned on your tv last night.

debating mccord vs stroud would be really strange. you can google the respective postseason stats of stroud vs mccord/brown/kienholz and compare.

We can see in the NFL how much of a baller he is. I’m saying that the issues this year shouldn’t be all on McCord. The offensive playcalling seemed suspect given the talent on the field, and the offensive line wasn’t cutting it. I don’t follow y’all enough to know the full blame breakdown on Day/Hartline/McCord/other assistants, but it shouldn’t be all on McCord and given the QB room it seems odd to chase McCord out of town.

i wasnt suggesting that you were knocking stroud. but rather making the outcome of a rivalry game (which is obv dependent on a lot of things) the summatoin of a quarterback's career. this is in part where the fanbase got it wrong with stroud.

i could get into the myriad of Day's staff selection blunders but I dont really wanna type an essay right now...but when you lose kevin wilson who was a GREAT head coach and offensive mind and replace him with a GA then you're setting yourself up for a major regression.

the OL was becoming serviceable towards the end of the year but for reasons unexplained they replaced their center last night and shifted some other guys around and the result of that was ummm...not good.

one of my best friends from high school is a huge OSU fan. Didn’t go there, but is the MOST obnoxious kinda OSU fan (and yes I know Michigan has this same kinda fan as part of the fan base.) Loves Ryan Day and he blames McCord for EVERYTHING this year. I’ve been arguing with him back and forth this morning…he’s currently blaming McCord for abandoning the team after spending the last month calling him trash and celebrating him being pushed out.

The list of excuses they were making for his losses was nauseating

It’s like they had on blinders to him abandoning everything Ohio State teams prides themselves on

>one of my best friends from high school is a huge OSU fan.
>Didn’t go there, but is the MOST obnoxious kinda OSU fan
>(and yes I know Michigan has this same kinda fan as part of
>the fan base.) Loves Ryan Day and he blames McCord for
>EVERYTHING this year. I’ve been arguing with him back and
>forth this morning…he’s currently blaming McCord for
>abandoning the team after spending the last month calling him
>trash and celebrating him being pushed out.

There has to be some QBs out that could be starting for Missouri that can actually complete passes beyond five yards

but I dont think Day rebounds from that disaster.

losing Brown was bad luck (especially for brown) but ya know you should probably prepare for that outcome (he's already been injured twice) and have a coherent plan in place should you need it.

the special teams continues to be a running joke.

when you have so many horrid coaching staff hires to correct you're probably better off just scrapping the whole damn thing

and now they'll have to beg Will Howard to come and stablize the qb room for a year

if cyren has such a hard-on for osu maybe contribute to the conversation respectfully (as you do) instead of deleting threads and lying about inbox complaints. and then dipping in just to troll.

the rest of the convo in here has been chill. it was a bowl game played with the third string qb that according to everyone was 'meaningless'* so i'm doing ok with it.

*unless osu loses then its a very big deal lol

My reply was a direct response to the absolute garbage on display, in regards to the 1st line of the OP. That transcends any specific game, but you made up some narrative in your world that I hold some imaginary grudge against Ohio State.

*For the record: I have a record of every inbox.

I don't give a fuck about any collegiate football program, let alone the ncaa. I like the sport, not the current governing regime.

But g'head and continue making this about you and your hurt feelings.

Without Travis this team knew it wasn’t worthy. The media should be ashamed for trying to cape for FSU under the circumstances.

but during championship week FSU was playing their 3rd string QB.

As soon as Travis went down I knew it was a wrap unless the backup was throwing 6 TD’s every game.

Iowa has a very good, outstandingly coached defense

their numbers are inflated from playing weak non conference and horrible big 10 west offenses

that was the main reason I thought this would be a game, but even without DeJean there were some big holes in the running game and Vols cruised throughout

Nico looking very truthy out there, 4 TD in his debut against a top-five defense

the pocket presence, scrambling ability, arm talent and accuracy -- this is the kind of player that can elevate a whole program

Iowa is punchless on offense but it was nice to see the secondary actually make some plays on the ball; I think the transfer portal losses will be a net gain for Tennessee next season

Iowa's defense only gave up 4 rushing TD all season? Nico scored 3 himself today...I was surprised at how easily Tennessee ran the ball

onto 2024

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
