"That fryer grease almost ready for Russy?"

Triple Doubles? Lots of them!
Defense? Switched off of Dame who ate his team up?
Winning? Uh Oh

11-31 in the deciding game is not good.
Getting super balled out of the first 3 straight years? Definitely not good.

Where are we at on the angriest man in basketball?

his hands. That's not Russ' call.

Budenholzer is reaping the benefits of players Kidd developed just like Nick Nurse is reaping the benefits of players Dwane Casey developed.

I'll allow it, he still can't get upset in the first round by a 7 seed

Very, very few would argue with you that Donovan doesn't deserve to get fried and ultimately fired.

And even fewer would argue against the white privilege running rampant in the NBA- particularly with coaches.

Its not really a debate.

But Donovan being awful doesn't mean Russ didn't just get murked.

Dame shoots better from 30+ feet than Russ does from 15.

Donovan can't shoot for Russ. Nor can he defend for him. Nor can he magically wave his hand and make Russ more consistent. Nah, Russ looks awful here. Even mentally/emotionally, Dame kicked his ass.

And I like Russ, but he gets fried. Rules are rules.

Hopefully they get a new coach. But Russ still has to smarten up. Maybe more than any star I can think of. Though PG seems to be getting dumber by association too.

Russ is obviously a great overall player but he shoots too many outside shots for a bad outside shooter.

And he didn’t back up all his shit talk. Dame got him. Russ gotta eat that.

and okc was in the 3/4 position at times during the year.

this was almost a pick series, if anything the odds were swung slightly (maybe not even the usual six points a night) for portland because they hosted the series. they got whipped in games 1 and 2, as a team they played terrible and russ was terrible. then in game 5 his opposite number totally dominated the game and stole the clincher.

if this when 7 and/or russ balled out, fine, but as it is, yeah, this is quite fry-able.

and Grant was a MIP candidate

Virtually disappeared down the stretch and in this series

I’m more of the opinion, teams started daring Russ to shoot

and he took the bait

can’t be a shoot first PG if you can’t shoot

Too many times he calls his own number

Those days may be behind him.

They won one game...1

all of the conversation I focused on was how bad okc looked coming down the stretch. Russell hasn't looked good all season and PG is clearly injured.

I'm not saying dude can't be criticized, he's supposed to be a top player and he went out in the first round. but acting like Dame and CJ -- even without Nurkic -- are some bums is bizarre. They got the 3rd seed in a really good western conference and Kanter has been great for them.

Even going out 4-1, considering what george hasn't been able to do, isn't shameful to me

but the thunder swept the blazers 4-0 in the regular season, all with nurkic. most of the analytics i saw pre-series had okc at 70-80% favorites to win.

the seeding isn't really significant imo, these teams were all clustered together and leapfrogging one another for 90% of the season.

doesn't matter who the coach is, when you're an elite/top-10 talent with respectable talent around you, you get fried for three straight first-round exits. and it's not like this is a new thing and russ has been singled out. cp3 was the laughingstock of the league for like a decade.

this year he objectively played like shit. shot 36% from the floor and didn't play anything near effective defense on lillard. defending him against this justified frying makes little sense. dude earned the criticism.

Portland getting swept in the first round last year as a higher seed *with* Dame getting shit on by Jrue Holliday was a disaster. For the team and especially him. That plus the Nurkic injury had the Blazers looking like a real soft target.

and that's saying something.

we are talking about his individual performance, which was weak AF, while his opposite number torched him.

i'm not even saying that they *should* have won the series. it was as much of a toss-up as any first round series this year. i had portland winning in 7. but they won in 5 and russy's performances ranged from substandard to embarrassing in some huge games (sucked in games 1 and 2, usual mess of high-usage and low-efficiency in game 5, etc). this isn't just about losing--had they lost in 7 games and it was a duel between the two stars, fine--this is how about they lost and how it fits into a broader pattern of losing.

playing shitty gets you fried. getting lit up gets you fried. you're over-thinking this.

and i don't care.

can we agree that 1) he got outplayed 2) he played poorly by any objective standard and 3) the teams were close but the series was not overall?

those seems like pretty concrete facts. now, interpretations thereof? i am not saying he is a choker or a regular-season player or whatever. but they have had winnable series and haven't been winning them. they don't seem like they are going to do great things with this group. now how can they change the team around him to make it successful? seems like their options are kind of limited, even though they do have a couple young guys who might step forward.

he played poorly all season and in the series.

his #1 value this year appeared to be basically as a comfort blanket for paul george to play with more confidence than we've ever seen because of whatever weird chemistry they have. the problem is that he got hurt.

paul was too injured to make up the difference in this series, adams is...whatever has happened to him, and russ could not go to another level.

the bad news for okc is that I don't think they can contend for a championship. but maybe that's ok? If they're relatively healthy I think they have years to go as a good team

Except for 3 spots. He didn't shoot as well from 3, his steals were down slightly and his TO's almost doubled.

PG was balling. OKC should have won this series IMO. I think Russ (while stacking up his normal stats) just ran into the reality that his inefficiency equals death in a 7 game series.

And to your point, he played like this all year. So to everyone else's point, Russ is mostly the catalyst here considering dude has a 31% usage rate he refuses to diminish/defer a portion off.

Truth is, Russ should be a SG who drives to score or drives and kicks when he has the ball and should have around a 22% usage rate. They should have a distributor next to him who can shoot the 3 in the upper 30's at minimum.

As it stands, he's a guard who relies heavily on his athleticism to carry him and he's on the wrong side of 30 for that to be his game's crutch.

Hopefully, he'll tweak a few things, work on his J, watch film, realize Schroeder or PG can carry the load on O more and come back next year for a serious run.

I doubt it though.

getting got by damian lillard & co. isn't embarrassing imo. if he came out and choked that'd be one thing, but playing the way he's been playing is definitively not choking.

I don't think the FRY HIM is about what happened on the court. I don't give a fuck if he's not respectful of the media and I don't even really care about him talking shit to lillard.

plus they gotta think about PG there. moving russ for futures/cap relief won't exactly thrill him

my point is i don't think it would be crazy to consider moving him, for the right package.

if I'm presti I'm at least kicking the tires. what's the alternative, run it back? I've seen some ppl mention moving adams but idk what that really gets them in return that moves the needle.

In response to Reply # 68

i dunno enough about their cap and shit to say for sure but i bet they have no money with three big ass contracts plus the rest of the roster. maybe adams+their souls for AD or something wild like that but let's not get too far off into speculative talk radio territory. but yeah i'd say make a coaching change first. i'd take calls on russ but the offer would have to be overwhelming.

In response to Reply # 37

You gotta get more for him that. I'm not even sure right today if Ball has any value at all. And that pick would have to be top 2 or 3.

Conversely, if the OKC would trade Westbrook to the Lakers, LeBron would have him kneecapped after two months, tops.

They have managed their assets pretty well post-Harden trade (obviously they bungled that) and rolled with the punches. He could be in many worse situations. They have shown him love and he's shown it back.

And, yes, Westbrook is the evolutionary Iverson, warts and all.

Fuck me...
Russ is a loose cannon, but only because there is about a thimble of coaching or team building going on around him. Idiots acting like averaging a triple double in the NBA is some easy thing to do, even if a handful of boards are stat padding... garbage people.

Blocked shots. Played his ass off with 16/8/3 blocks on 7/8 shooting in the elimination game.

Adams is Adams. Schroeder played as well as he could given the roll. PG didn’t match his pre-injury MVP level season, but he still put up huge numbers on 43% shooting(not great, but not meltdown Russ level).

Russ/Donovan take ALL the heat here this year.
