Pulling up jacking threes isn't initiating the offense....Charles Barkley said it at halftime but he didn't want to say Russ name...

When they initiate their offense through Steven Adams, they get better shots, even Russ does.

The rest of the squads shot selection gets better....that is how he lost game one. He was part of the 5-33. They should have won that game.

In response to Reply # 14

And it has to be known by Russ that Dame's entire MO against the Thunder is to flop, deadball bitchery and every tough-guy mind tactic he can get away with (which, so far this series, seems to be a lot with how lopsided the officiating has been); instead, Russ is getting baited into a street game even when they were up 10 at the end of the first half, which froze out PG and Adams. As easy as it would be to just blame Westbrook, Donovan deserves heaps of criticism for having basically no control over this team on offense when Russ is in the game. NONE. He may as well just grab a beer and watch like the rest of us when he's in.

Russ did it to him a couple games during the regular season. They have a "healthy" back and forth. Last night was a terrible time for it...especially since Russ really did play a good game on Sunday...when no one else could make a shot. The bigger issue to (and to most Thunder fans) is the fact that they don't have an answer for Steve and for some reason, the coach can't see that. There is no reason Steve shouldn't touch the ball every time down in a half court situation. Billy for whatever reason can't tell his team to stop shooting threes when they aren't falling and stick with what got us the lead. And I don't really wanna hear the Russ won't listen shit from people, because I watched all 82 games. Sunday, Russ only took 4 threes and they were scattered through the game...he didn't even take a shot in the 1st quarter. PG was 3-15 for three, Dennis was 0-7 from three. Everyone was chucking and missing and Billy just sits there looking like he just remembered he left the oven on. He's terrible calling timeouts, too. Steve was fouling out their whole front-court and we were living in the paint...then it just stopped. Sorry, that's on the coach.

In response to Reply # 21

After moving back here (Oklahoma), I've watched a ton of this team and really want to go all in on them, but the chaos and lack of halfcourt is infuriating. Russ's game works in the regular season, most times, because teams check out or the odds mostly fall in favor of uptempo multiple attempts/possessions, but playoff teams who are adequately equipped (like the Blazers) will always outmatch that style. If Russ had the control to play the pick and roll with Adams and PG as the dumpout, they would be unstoppable. Hell, if they even had a plan B pg like Tyrus Jones that could/would slow the game down for a spell and allow that game to develop, they would still likely scrap out a lot of games. Instead, they got Schroeder, a streakier Russ with less ball control. Donovan is just stealing paychecks if his offensive philosophy is really this chaotic. Either that or he has zero control of this team, in which case he needs to be jettisoned quickly.

Russ has had great success attacking the rim to score or create shots for others, and repeatedly, when they needed a basket, he pulled up and tried a long three or two, and it rubbed off on his squad. PG had the good sense to attack more this game, but Russ kept killing any rhythm they developed on offense.

I don't care how pigheaded dude is, if Donovan doesn't want to confront him, then call timeout and draw up a play that has him drive and kick to Ferguson or something.

but you can't just act like everyone is out there trying to do the right thing and Russ is undermining them at every turn. PG took FIFTEEN threes, Sunday and only hit three...he was chucking like mad. Russ played a smooth game. He didn't even shoot in the 1st quarter he spent the whole time trying to get the ball to other guys. He didn't start even attacking the rim til he realized no one could hit a damn shot.

Down 0-2 in the series and as soon as they get a “safe” lead in a game they start popping off. Russ at least backed it up that game, even though Dame has outplayed him in the series. Shroeder’s frontrunning ass out there acting like a clown at the end of the game.

This one has actually pulled out strong rooting interests in me. I’m pulling for Portland.

Former player who you'd think the team would have to respect. Inspire the guys on the team, but hopefully also hold them accountable.

Also, I'd hope he'd be able to coach guys like Westbrook up on D. Russ is probably a lot closer than he'd like to admit to starting to lose the athleticism that's so important to his game. Jackson could help him make the transition to the next phase of his career.

Suns are probably dumb enough to swap him for Booker. OKC can just build around PG & start Schroder.

And Westbrook is one of my top-5 favorite players in the NBA to watch.

I think Russ has hit that decline wall. It might ever happen for dude again (deep playoff run).

That 30 curve hits some harder than others. Yeah those stats are nice but they gotta translate to postseason W's.

Wessy has lost in the first round since Durant left.

This is not how the first full year of the two of them together was supposed to end. The perception very much is that the team went off the rails. Lots of people (not me) picked them to cruise past the Blazers, beats the winner of Spurs/Nuggets, and give a solid showing in the Conference Finals, with full knowledge that they were the sixth seed.

So since both of them are here for the long haul, Donovan is gone.

He has zero ability to coach a coherent offense (see here the giant New Zealender that should be banging in 25-30 points a game, but can go ten minutes without getting a touch) so has to ride their hot hands as much as possible, and ends up with PG having glass shoulders and Russ's legs being basically dead at the end of the season. And when the season is on the line, all of a sudden Donovan wants to pretend he can coach and starts calling weird timeouts and drawing up bricks. When PG and Russ were getting beat to shit in January/February is when a smart coach would have been limiting the hell out of their minutes and running a slow pick and roll game with Schroeder and Adams and trying to build up their defensive play. Instead, it was more Billy ball, 100 MPH of uptempo nonsense, driving the team into a wall like McClendon did.

Mark Jackson or bust.

cuz when I say it, people are just go with “sour grapes”, “ you mad”, “Russ fault”, etc. Last night Kanter basically had one arm from the 1st quarter on. What did we do? Have Steve settings pics at the key. Dude called a timeout when Russ was either gonna have an open dunk or get clear path fouled...but, watched 4 minutes while the lead melted before calling a timeout and setting something up. There’s so much more. I wanted Fiz, last year. That ship has sailed. Monty about to get a gig. Let’s go Mark Jax. P.S. I know it isn’t actually going to happen.

The game was tied before he took the shot, so the worst that would have happened was an extra 5 minutes of overtime.

Is it a bad shot, or not?

If you are saying "but Steph makes them"...then.... so does Dame. Ask the Thunder.

Shooting 3s when you only need a single point is the NBA today. If its "bad basketball" then its bad for everyone.

The Dame hate is kinda crazy. There is literally no reason to dislike him. None.

Is he Steph? No. Of course not. But he's obviously proven he can make that shot. If its a bad shot for him, its a bad shot for everyone.

but Lillard has shown he can make those insanely deep threes in the past, so I wouldn't say it's a bad attempt.

Pretty much impossible to guard against given Lillard's handles. It's not as if George could have crowded him since it's possible Lillard could have driven past him for a more conventional two pointer or even worse try and reach in on Lillard, foul him, and send him to the free throw line.

You don't want him driving past, you don't want him shooting the 3 from closer, you don't want to crowd him and foul him. You want him launching from damn near 40 feet, and if he makes it, then fuck it.

It's like defending against Steph or Trae Young when they're on-- they're going to launch some nutty-ass shots that are, beyond reason, not terrible shots for those specific players in those specific scenarios. But you can't as a smart defender start thinking, "Let me get up in a player's grill when he's chucking near the logo."

Lillard shot really well from 30+ feet this season, but I wonder how those numbers would change if you moved it to 35+ feet. Regardless, if you play too tight on him, he gets past you and now you're fucked. Maybe I'm overthinking it, or maybe I'm adhering to conventional basketball knowledge in a game where more players are getting comfortable well outside 30 feet.

But I think, on a night like the one Dame was having, if your team isn't doubling him, I still think your goal as the 1v1 defender is "have him shoot from as far away as possible." Cuz I have no doubt that if George played him tightly at 37 feet, Lillard's either craftily drawing a foul or finding a way around him-- and once he's past PG, he's gonna have even more options for shots/drawing fouls.

and what we can be with some tweaks and additions...he's trying to save face. I get it. You can't be that dismissive when a dude put one in your eye, like that. If you wanna get all basketball encyclopedia analytical about it..yes, it was a bad shot. Except Dame was burying that shot all night and all series. Hell, his first shot of the game was damn near that deep. P gave him too much room, had an oh shit moment and couldn't get back in time. Eye jammy. Dame and CJ simply outplayed Russ and PG. Guess what...last year, Rondo and Jrue outplayed Dame and CJ. These guys are the fucking best. Someone is gonna beat someone. We got beat.

i agree w paul, it's a shot you can live with, but it wasn't a bad shot. not for that guy, in that situation.

Paul should have watched the clock. When it gets down to 4-3 secs left, you press up, he was clearly going to shoot. Having to take a few dribbles to get that shot off with someone on you ticks off just enough to make the shot questionable.

He just let Dame sit there and dribble. I'm looking like, "he gonna drive at about 5 secs and try to get fouled" then when it got to 5 and he was still dribbling that deep out I said "Dame...what you about to do?!?!"

If I was guarding him, I would have pressed up as soon as I had that thought..."he shooting a deep 3".

Plus he had hit the shot earlier. Same spot on the opposite end.

Nope, not giving him that. lol

He hits it with me pressed up on him or the ref bails him out...so be it. Paul did his Nyquil thing...fell asleep.

if he pump fakes and gets you to foul him 40 feet from that basket and gets 3 free-throws that's not a good look either

Not that they'd necessarily be *hugely* different, but the difference between a 30-31 footer and the 37-footer Dame took seems pretty notable imo. I've seen the 30+ numbers and they're insane... but without looking at a shot chart, I'd imagine the bulk of those attempts are between 30 and 32.

And btw, I'm not saying it was a bad shot. If Dame's in the zone, it's a shot he can obviously make. I'm just arguing that, from George's perspective trying to guard him 1v1, it's probably the shot he wants Dame taking, the shot he can most easily live with if Dame drills it.

They were up 3-1, at home in a tie game with the ball in hand and 16 ticks left.

That wasn't high pressure at all. He misses and it's just OT, they lose and it's just game 6.

I mean, it was a dope play but eh on the hyperbole. lol
