I like Cronin well enough, but he's *really* struggled in March. One Sweet 16 in 13 seasons. He's had three consecutive seasons of 28 wins or more, but he hasn't made it past Round 2 in that span.
Perhaps one can attribute that to Cincinnati's overall lack of talent, which would be fair... but since his entire career has been built on these lunchpail, try-hard guys, how is he going to do with the level of recruits UCLA expects, and with an organization that expects tournament success first and foremost? I mean, Alford made three Sweet 16s in six seasons, and they ran his ass out of town with pitchforks and torches. And Cronin's made one *ever.*
I honestly think Barnes, with his predilection for finding and developing talent, or Dixon, with his highly efficient style of offense, may have been better for this gig, despite my own reservations about both of them. They both fit the style UCLA fans seem to prefer, they both have been further in the tournament, they both have success at multiple schools. Cronin is a solid coach, but he brings all sorts of question marks in *this* situation imo. He'd have been better suited for, like, a Big 10 gig, imo.
Open to being wrong, of course. I do like Cronin on the whole. I just can't believe, if they're gonna spend FOUR MIL PER YEAR on Mick Cronin, why UCLA didn't just offer 8 mil per year to Bennett and Beard this morning. Give them the money they offered Calipari, make them consider it-- Bennett's getting like 4 at UVA, Beard is getting a hair above 3 IIRC, so they'd both be getting their salary effectively doubled and becoming instantly the third highest paid coach in NCAA ball. Then, you'd still have a slow defensive-minded team, but you'd have one of the best minds in basketball, someone young, someone who will absolutely win a shitload of games year in and year out.
It seems like, instead, they just wanted the discount version of those coaches.
