"NBA Adam Silver: NBA Players Are ‘Truly Unhappy’ (swipe)"

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes that many NBA players feel isolated and anxious, he told the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference on Friday.

“When I meet with them, what surprises me is that they’re truly unhappy,” Silver said, per Boston.com’s Nicole Yang. “A lot of these young men are generally unhappy.”

“We are living in a time of anxiety,” Silver added. “I think it’s a direct result of social media.”

Silver believes that it’s a generational issue that goes beyond elite athletes.

While social media has helped the league become more fan-friendly, promote players and gain international exposure, there are downsides.

And the effects of social media are amplified for NBA players with thousands of followers and a constant stream of negative comments.

Silver also suggested that teams in the 1980s had more camaraderie without smartphones and social media.

“Championships are won on the bus,” Silver said, quoting Isiah Thomas.

Now, Silver says, players are always wearing headphones to and from the arena.

“If you’re around a team in this day and age, there are always headphones on,’’ Silver said. “ are isolated, they have their heads down.”

In recent times NBA stars Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan have spoken out about their own battles with depression and anxiety.

The NBPA will launch a new mental health and wellness program in May to help players deal with mental health issues.

I missed his pregame...I won't miss any of this shit...comment

He truly is miserable

But I also suffer from what I call...I can do more-itis...

That is...I set goals for myself...achieve said goal...but the joy is fleeting

...as I push myself to do more...I always think I can do more...

So for these guys...like Kyrie and KD

They push themselves to achieve ultimate goals, like chips and MVPS

...but are constantly barraged with the idea that they can do more...

and it feels like they have to in order to keep up with Jorns and Jameses

I get it.

I think folks believe success at the job brings joy

but you still have to go home and live outside of work...

cause there will always be more work

prolly time to find some passions outside of basketball.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
